The document discusses the planning and evaluation of three photographs taken for a youth magazine. For each photo, decisions were made regarding shot type, angle, lighting, props, and costume to represent youth in a positive way. Mise-en-scene was used to portray the subject as sophisticated and focused through facial expressions and props. While most elements worked well to engage the target audience, one recommendation was to take photos in a more vibrant location for better lighting and saturation.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Can you use the photo?
Are the lighting, focus and
composition suitable for
production?
Are there any reasons you
need to retake the photo?
Are you pleased wit the
final outcome
The first picture is of a young artist
who is making a pose whilst holding
a microphone in his hand. The
photo has no background as I have
decided to crop the background off
(conventions of magazines don’t
have image backgrounds). Eye
contact is made with the artist so
the viewer can directly relate to the
artist.
I have decided to take a medium shot of the artist at
eye-level angle. From my magazine research,
commonly artists tend to be at eye level and their
head and body is in the image. I put high lighting on
the image as I wanted the image to look
professional, and from researching artists on
magazine covers, they are mainly under high
lighting. As for props, I have used a microphone and
also jewellery to emphasize what genre of music the
magazine is focusing on and also the visual motifs of
hip-hop. The costume was mainly clothing aimed for
the youth. Fashionable Ralph hooded top was used
to show how the youth wear clothing that are
trending.
Through the use of mise-en-scene I am trying to
represent the youth in a positive way. I decided
to make a fair representation by making the
costume and props relate to the young
audiences. Fashionable hoodies and jewellery is
what young people are into. I have made a
realistic representation which is mainly
entertaining rather than embarrassing. Young
audiences will not feel embarrassed with the
image as they can easily relate to it through the
confident sophisticated facial expression and
body language. The representation looks
acceptable and is not offensive in anyway. In
conclusion, I am adhering the stereotype as my
artist has his hood worn in the image. Young
people are stereotyped as wearing hoodies.
I believe that this photo is a great
photo which can be used. I made
a high bright lighting in order to
make the image look professional
and from a high quality camera. In
addition, I took the picture at a
good composition and the artist
will be placed right in the heart of
the magazine cover. General
magazine covers have the artist in
the centre which I can do with the
image. The focus of the image is
on the body language, facial
expressions and the props. This
will all attract the youth and is
suitable for production.
The image I took turned out to
be good and the body language,
facial expressions and props
made me pleased with the final
outcome.
My second image is of the same
artist and is placed on the contents
page of my product. The image is of
the artist with his hands in his
pockets looking directly at the
camera. I used eye contact to
enhance his facial expression,
making him look dedicated and like
a successful hip-hop artist.
I have decided to take a medium/long shot for the
picture which will be placed on my contents page. I
looked at many contents page and they tend to
reveal more than just the torso and head. The shot is
angle is straight on, with the artist making eye-
contact. The lighting of this image is also bright and
high, as I want to give the image a classy
professional look. The props are similar to the first
image. I decided to put a belt which is an expensive
feature. Hip-Hop artists relate to wealth so I
included an expensive belt which is Armani. This was
aimed to the youth as they want to relate
themselves to being wealthy.
Through mise-en-scene, I decided to give the
same representations as the first image.
Although this image may be embarrassing as
the artist is “sagging” which means his trousers
are pulled down revealing his boxers. The youth
are pursued to be sagging on the street so I
decided to follow the common stereotype and
make the artist do this. Other than that
negative representation, I think it may also be
offensive to some of the youth, and they may
not think it’s fair. However, the rest of the
props and facial expressions make it look fair
and also realistic, as well as being acceptable.
The second photo is one which I
think can be used in production.
The lighting, focus and also the
composition of the artist covering
one half of the page enhances the
codes and conventions of
magazine contents pages. The
quality of the image is crisp and I
will be able to easily edit the
image making it looks perfect for
my product.
The image I took turned out to
be good and the body language,
facial expressions and props
made me pleased with the final
outcome.
2. Use this chart to record and evaluate your photos. You can use these notes in your evaluation and use your decisions to inform you of any changes or revisions that need to be
made for the photography used in your advert.
Record one area you felt went well and consider one recommendation you would give yourself or the group to improve upon this practice:
1) I believe that the props we used were suitable for the hip-hop genre and the facial expressions and body language represent the youth positively.
Recommendation:
1) I would recommend the photos to be taken in a more vibrant location. I took them at home meaning I had to edit them fairly a lot to be able to make
the saturation and lighting increase.
The third image I have used is of the
same artist and he is looking directly
at the camera whilst holding his chin
with a few fingers. Just like the
other two images, I want to make a
consistent representation of the
youth as being positive. Thereby I
made the facial expressions on the
artist look like a serious artist by
putting a focused face.
The shot of the third main image I have used is
similar to the first one being a medium shot. On
double page spreads, the artist covers a whole page
and they are generally close-up or medium shots, so
I decided to follow the convention. The angle is at
eye level so show a sense of equality and to not
make the artist look superior or inferior. The lighting
is also high. The same props were used in the other
two images, showing consistency. For the third
image, I decided to make the focus on the artists
watch as it is expensive and falls into the hip-hop
category. In addition, the hoodie is worn by the
artist to show that he is relating to the youth as they
are represented to wearing hoodies,.
As far as mise-en-scene is concerned, I have
represented the youth to being sophisticated
through this image. The facial expressions show
dedication as well as the body language of
holding his chin. This shows he is about his
business and focused. The positive
representation is made through this also. In
addition, I have made a legitimate
representation by using the appropriate props
and costume. Furthermore, I decided to make
an acceptable and not embarrassing
representation by using the right stereotypes of
the youth and not using them in a negative way.
Just like my other two photos, I
believe this photo is also
acceptable to be placed on my
double page spread. The focus is
on the facial expressions and the
props which will automatically
attract the youth. In addition, I
think that the image with high
lighting looks like a real magazine
photograph.
The image I took turned out to
be good and the body language,
facial expressions and props
made me pleased with the final
outcome.
