1. HOW DID YOU ATTRACT YOUR AUDIENCE?

2. COVER LINES I have used cover lines on my front cover. By doing this, I aim to attract the audience to my magazine.

3. I aimed to have cover lines which grabbed the reader’s attention but left a small element of intrigue. By using key words such as “best” and “top 10”, the reader is given a taster of what is inside, but not given the full picture.

4. All of the cover lines that I have used are short, snappy sentences. This is because I feel that a brief insight about what articles are featured inside is a good way to engage your audience and attract them to your magazine. The length is not overpowering and enables the reader to quickly scan over them and make an impromptu decision about whether to read on or not.

5. Furthermore, language choices have been made. I have used simple, understandable jargon to enable quick reading. However, the basic lexis does not have an impact on anything other than the effortless reading. Features which would lower the age range of my piece would be alliteration, assonance and onomatopoeia. I have not used any of these so therefore the basic language used has not backfired.

6. REFERNCING OTHER ARTISTSThroughout my magazine, I have referenced other artists which I feel would appeal to my specific readers.

7. Most noticeably on my front cover, other musical acts are referred. How will a reader know if this is their type of magazine if they haven’t read it before, or if they don’t know the main featured artist? By mentioning other acts, the reader’s pragmatic knowledge is put into action. They will be able to identify the referenced acts and, if they are a fan of them already, they will make an assumption of whether they like them or not.

8. A good way to introduce new, upcoming acts to readers is by the means of association. If you were to write an article about a rock group in a rock magazine, and mention a new pop star within it, it isn’t likely that the audience will look up the new pop star as they’re not interested in pop. However, if you mention a new rock group then the readers will be interested, thus, gaining more publicity for the new group. This will be all down to the association they received with the popular, famous band.

9. FONTSWhen creating my magazine, I had to choose fonts/typefaces with my audience and general aesthetic in mind.

10. Dubstep is a genre of music which has strong connotations with computers and electronics. With this in mind, I chose fonts which appeared to do the same. The font I chose for my contents page – along with other features throughout – used block letters which look like a typeface from a computer. I wanted the fonts to reflect that my magazine was about dubstep rather than, for example, pop music which would have a much more rounded and bubbly effect.

11. My masthead - “PULSE” - is written in a clear, readable font. I needed the reader to have easy access to reading the title as it is a key identity of my magazine. The typeface, again, has connotations with computers, which is what I aimed for as dubstep is primarily electronically made. I predict my audience will appreciate this link and hopefully it will have increased the respectability of my magazine.

12. I have used the same font on each page that I have used the title of my magazine. The first image is on my front cover, the second is on my contents page and the third is on my double page spread. I have kept the fonts the same for each time so that a sense of familiarity is kept. The title is basically the identity and brand of my magazine so the recurring image is helpful for the reader as they are attracted to the specific font.

13. PRICEAlthough it may not seem like a necessity for a magazine, I feel that price plays a significant part in the audience’s decision of purchasing.

14. I believe that if a magazine were to be priced anything above £3 for a weekly edition, it may reduce its amount of readers because it could be seen as too expensive. However, to contrast this, if the magazine were to cost less than £1, the readers may think that it’s a bad quality magazine and not even worth reading. Therefore, I had to find a happy medium and I feel that £1.99 was suitable.

15. PHOTOGRAPHYThe type of photography that magazines use determines a lot about their image as a whole. I think that I have used appropriate photography styles.

16. The type of person that I photographed was fitting of my magazine and of my genre of music. Dubstep producers are usually male, and usually young. I think I have attracted my audience with this photography as it is made to seem as real as possible. The photography is meant to look professional and of a good quality, like all magazines. The high standard would and should attract a reader.

17. All of the people featured in the photographs below are dubstep artists. I have taken inspiration for my magazine from this type of photography.

18. To attract my audience, I used a variety of people within it. This stops the reader from feeling bored of seeing the same face all the time. As I only created 3 different sections of my magazine, I was more inclined to use a variety of people. I also made sure that I used both males and females. Even though dubstep producers are predominantly male, I wanted to even it out, as it’s not uncommon to find females in magazines of similar genres such as Mixmag and DJmag which I have analysed.
