Who would be the audience for your
media product?
In this evaluation activity, I am going to analyse the
information that I received from my target audience
profile members and explain why I think they would
want to watch our film opening. I have produced a
profile for both a female audience member, Phoebe
Hudson and a male audience member, Chris Forster. I
did this in order to understand their interests and how
well suited they are to our film. Because our film
opening is targeted at both genders, I thought it would
be suitable to research and evaluate both a male and
female member.
Phoebe Hudson is
an example of
someone who
would be classified
in our target
audience. I asked
Phoebe a collection
of questions about
her interests and
the results showed
that she represents
the perfect
demographic to be
attracted to our
product. She is 16
years old therefore
will be able to
relate to the
characters in our
film as they are of a
similar age. She
also attends sixth
form college like
the characters.
Her hobbies and
interests are very
similar to most other
teenage students. She
enjoys socialising
with people and an
going to the cinema.
When Phoebe goes to
the cinema, it is
almost always a
horror/thriller film
that is she going to
see. She believes that
watching horror
films in the cinema
makes it a much
more scary and fun
experience than
watching it at home.
If myself and Dickie
were to distribute
our film opening, we
would hope to show
screenings at the
cinema as well as via
DVD and Blu-Ray.
I believe that Phoebe would
particularly like our film
because she has stated here
that she prefers horror films
to have hidden meanings
and storylines. In our film
opening, we have an
unknown character who we
see faintly in one of the
camera shots. This causes
the audience to question
what role that character has
in the film and creates a
suspense atmosphere. Also
another preference Phoebe
has to a horror film is a
realistic storyline as this
makes it more relatable and
scary. I think that Dickie
and I have successfully
created a realistic storyline
as we have set our film
opening around a Duke Of
Edinburgh expedition
which is an event that is
very common for students
in school nowadays.
The
majority
of
Phoebe’s
favourite
films are
of the
horror
genre. She
clearly
enjoys
watching
horror
films and
therefore
there is a
higher
chance
she
would be
interest in
ours.
Similar to Phoebe, Chris
attends sixth form
college and is in the
suitable demographic
member to relate to the
characters in our film
opening. His personality
also reflects the male
characters in the film. He
has both characteristics
that similar to Ben as
well as similar to Billy.
At times Chris can be
over confident and
willing to do things that
other people don’t think
are right. This is
something that Billy is
shown doing throughout
the film opening. On the
other hand, Chris can be
sensible and down to
earth like Ben. I think
that this similarity in
personality helps Chris
to relate to the characters
and understand their
feelings throughout.
Chris’ main
hobbies are being
with friends,
singing and going
to the cinema. In
general, Chris
goes to the
cinema every
fortnight with his
friends. He often
watches action
films however he
enjoys horror
films too. As both
Chris and Phoebe
go out a lot of the
time, I think that
in order to
advertise our film
opening, we
should consider
making posters
and magazine
covers. However
this is an area I
will cover another
time.
Although there aren’t
very many unexpected
jump scares in our film
opening, I think that
Dickie and I were able to
keep constant tension
throughout the entire
film opening right up
until Ben wakes up. We
managed this through
the use of eerie music,
quick transition editing
and our props such as
the hammer. I think that
Chris would like to
watch our film because
not only is our film of his
favourite genre, but we
have also used an
unknown character who
will not be revealed until
right at the end of the
film. This is one of Chris’
preferences to storylines
of the horror genre.
His favourite
films are mainly
of the action and
horror genre.
This is perfect
for our target
audience
expectations as
he has
experience of
watching other
horror films and
will be able to
compare them
to ours.
Overall, I believe that Dickie and I will be able to attract
our audience successfully. Both Phoebe and Chris are
perfect representatives of our target audience and have
given me a clear understanding of why they would
want to watch our film. I think that the next step I need
to consider is to show Phoebe and Chris our film
opening and see how they react. This should support
the information that I have extracted from this
audience profile evaluation.
