Gerhard Richter combines drawing and photography by layering marks over photographs with paint. Throughout his practice, he considers the idea of making viewers question what is a mark and what is a photograph. Richter once took small photographs and smeared them with paint, which partly resolved this problem for him by combining the mediums and blurring the lines between photograph and painting.
