While walking in Yorkshire, the author was inspired by David Hockney's charcoal drawings of East Yorkshire landscapes in an exhibition. Not only the drawings but also Hockney's collage work influenced the author, particularly his "Home made prints" which use cut and assembled marks to create images. Seeing these prints motivated the author to try making physical rather than digital collaged landscapes, believing it would give them a more tactile quality. The author also likes the idea of incorporating maps into collages to help viewers connect memory with place.
