In what way does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Through my research of more well known hip-hop magazines such
as XXL, I conformed to the conventions of the magazine and
imported these conventions in to my own magazine. Firstly, I
ensured that my master head was placed at the top of my
magazine front cover, where it is predominantly located. I have
also added various sell-lines and a main central image. I also
added my magazine slogan which is also generally bigger to the
rest of the text which is located on the page. Most music
magazines use these features.
Conventions
Title/Logo
The title of my magazine 'Street Heat' appears consistently
throughout my magazine, as seen in my double page spread,
front cover and my contents page. This is again a convention
used in many magazines as the logo of the magazine would
usually appear in these pages. The title of the magazine gives
an indication of what type of magazine it is, the term 'Street'
suggests that it is an urban magazine, coinciding with the hip
hop genre.
Mise-en-scene
With regards to mise-en-scene, I have tried to incorporate
clothing that is very typical of Hip-Hop artists. These items of
clothing include a baseball cap, dark clothing and more
specifically the 'Air Jordan' trainers which you can see in my
double page spread. These trainers are commonly well known in
the hip hop industry and are worn by many hip hop artists.
Model
However, regarding one of my models, I have subverted what is expected of a
hip hop magazine front cover. This is due to not only using a female on my front
cover, but a oriental female. Hip hop magazines generally consist of black male
models, as seen in my contents page and double page spread. I have ensured
that the written content in my magazine is kept to a minimum, in order to draw
more attention to the images, which I believe is the strongest point of the
magazine. This is also very commonly done amongst music magazines. The use
of minimal text in my front cover prevents it from looking clustered and makes
the front cover a lot easier on the eye.

Firstly, I ensured that my master head was placed at the top of my magazine front cover, where it is predominantly located. I have also added various sell-lines and a main central image. I also added my magazine slogan which is also generally bigger to the rest of the text which is located on the page. Most music magazines use these features. Conventions
  • 3. Title/Logo The title of my magazine 'Street Heat' appears consistently throughout my magazine, as seen in my double page spread, front cover and my contents page. This is again a convention used in many magazines as the logo of the magazine would usually appear in these pages. The title of the magazine gives an indication of what type of magazine it is, the term 'Street' suggests that it is an urban magazine, coinciding with the hip hop genre.
  • 4. Mise-en-scene With regards to mise-en-scene, I have tried to incorporate clothing that is very typical of Hip-Hop artists. These items of clothing include a baseball cap, dark clothing and more specifically the 'Air Jordan' trainers which you can see in my double page spread. These trainers are commonly well known in the hip hop industry and are worn by many hip hop artists.
  • 5. Model However, regarding one of my models, I have subverted what is expected of a hip hop magazine front cover. This is due to not only using a female on my front cover, but a oriental female. Hip hop magazines generally consist of black male models, as seen in my contents page and double page spread. I have ensured that the written content in my magazine is kept to a minimum, in order to draw more attention to the images, which I believe is the strongest point of the magazine. This is also very commonly done amongst music magazines. The use of minimal text in my front cover prevents it from looking clustered and makes the front cover a lot easier on the eye.
