The document discusses how the media product conforms to and develops conventions of real hip-hop magazines. Specifically, it uses the color scheme of red, white, and black and features only male models, as hip-hop magazines typically do. It also analyzes professional magazines to understand conventions like positioning models in dark backgrounds with high lighting. Throughout the product, editing was done to add more jewelry to models to clearly portray the hip-hop genre, in line with conventions.
1. 1- In what ways does your
media product use, develop
or challenge forms and
conventions of real products
2. Conventions used
For my product I have used the same
colour schemes which are present on
professional magazines of my genre
(Hip-hop) which is red, white and
black. By doing this, it will help the
audience to recognise the colour
scheme and relate my magazine to
hip-hop magazines. Here is an
example of a professional magazine,
which I have analysed, that shows
this colour scheme.
I have also used artist names as sell
lines just like professional magazines
have to make the front cover of my
product resemble a hip-hop magazine.
Along with this I have a captivating
caption which should gain the
attention of the audience.
Throughout my product I have only
used male models because Hip-hop is
a very male dominated music genre
and on most hip-hop magazines you
see males and very rarely females.
This means that my product conforms
to the conventions of professional
magazines.
I have used high key lighting with a
low lit background for my DPS as the
two professional examples I had
analysed also had dark backgrounds
with a visible model; however one of
the models was not as visible as the
other was. This convention conforms
to the typical hip-hop magazine DPS
and therefore helps the audience to
recognise it.
3. Analysis of existing professional
products
These are a few of the examples of my
analysis of the existing professional products.
By analysing these, I was able to understand
the conventions of music magazines and hip-
hop magazines in general. This gave me a
better understanding of what I should do for
my product and it helped me to construct a
product which does resemble a hip-hop
magazine.
4. Mise-en-scene, editing and photography
For this product, I have made sure
that the pictures that I took made the
genre of the magazine clear. Initially,
the clothing of my models in my front
cover did not fully portray the genre of
hip-hop as one of my models is
wearing a shirt, however the
positioning of the models and their
poses and facial expressions may have
helped to portray the genre. I used
professional products as inspiration
for the positioning and poses of my
models, as seen in my DPS. Also the
use of jewellery has helped me to
portray the genre throughout the
product because hip-hop is related to
big jewellery. The models may have
not had the jewellery on them so, in
some instances, I had to edit on some
jewellery – or extra jewellery- in order
to make the genre clear.
Here are examples of
where I have edited
jewellery onto the
models in order to
conform to the genre
of hip-hop.
This is where I used
professional products
as inspiration for the
positioning of my
model and his pose
too.
