Collect pictures and

Events that have
happened
3. Final Idea
Make a documentary based on West Yorkshire Polices mounted police and look briefly
into the history of it.
I will include an interview an ex mounted police officer. From the interview I will hopefully
get stories from different events that happened during their career and information that
you couldn’t find off the internet
I want to film at the Police stables and get multiple shots of what it looks like now and
see if I can get some photos/videos of what it used to look now. This will enable me
to compare and show how its either improved or got worse.
4. Documentary Research
Different types of documentary's
•Expository Documentary
•Observational Documentary
•Participatory Documentary
•Reflexive Documentary
•Performative Documentary
•Narrative Modes and Documentary Structures
Documentary Structure
• The subject is what your documentary is about
• The purpose of what the filmmaker is trying to say
about the subjects of their film
• Have a clear beginning, middle and end
• The message behind the documentary can be
either Indirect or direct towards the audience
Information Graphics
• Information graphics to show data, locations...
They are useful to show specific data to the
audience. Info graphics such as timelines, flow
diagrams and poll charts are really helpful as
they can support points been made and make it
easier for the audience to understand the
statistics of that certain subject.
Camera Angles
• The most used camera angle in documentary's is
the over the shoulder shot. It really enhances the
interviewees facial expressions. A lot of camera
work is handheld in documentary's as there tends
to be a lot of movement. However, if it's an
interview, the camera is normally on a tripod to
stop any movement.

In this documentary cutaways are used a fair few times. It works
nicely as the police officer is doing a voice over so visually its
more interesting as you don’t have to watch them whilst they are
talking.
Each time a new police officer was interviewed they have displayed their name
and background information. The advantage of this is so that everytime they
interview someone new it doesn’t prolong the documentary more by having
everyone introduce themselves. It also means that as it flicks through the
different interviewees you don’t have to remember who is who.
In terms of lighting it is very dark throughout. To make the interviewee stand
out they have used different lights to blur out the background. They have
also used a light behind which gives the interviewee an outline, moving
them even further to the front off the screen.

2 Episode 3 BBC Documentary 2021
For the intro one technique they have used and works really well is the
pre-recorded phone call to the ambulance with the EKG in the
background. It reflects it really well as the person on the phone says the
injured person has died the line goes flat. They have also used music in
the background to build tension.
Another technique that they have used in the intro is a lot
of slow-motion shots. Aesthetically it works really nicely.
They have used a lot of different angles as well with the
slow-motion shots.

Product 3: Stop and search: The controversial
police power (Documentary) - BBC Stories
Throughout the documentary there are lots of
different camera angles used. At the
beginning there are a few arial shots and
establishing shots giving us a clear view of
the location the documentary is filmed. I like
how they have done this as it gives you an in
site as to what the area is like.
When there are people talking/ been
interviewed they have angled the camera at
eye level which is good as captures all facial
expressions to what has been said.

Like most of the other documentarys voice overs have been used repeatedly
thorugout. They have used the voice overs for multiple reasons but the main one
been giving extra information when it has been left out.
Between each scene/ location they have use a divider clip to sperate them.
I like how they have done this so it doesn’t all blend into one and makes it
more aesthetically pleasing.
Once again like the other documentarys they have used all sorts of
different angles, which captures all of then facial expressions made. I
like how in this scene they have cameras dotted around the car so they
can flick between all angles.

I like how they have videoed them from the back watching
the footage. The way they have projected it onto the
concrete wall gives it more of an industrial setting which is
very fitting with the location the whole documentary has
been filmed in.
Another technique they have used that I like is using both
voice overs and talking directly to the camera.

12. Existing Product Summary
After watching a few documenatrys based on a similar subject to mine, I have picked out a few
techniques I would like to use when creating my documentary. One technique in partical that I
liked was cut aways. Cut aways work really nicely to break big pieces of footage up to help
engage the audience more and make it less boring. This would be especially helpful to me as
my audience is younger, so it will make it an easier watch as it wouldn’t be too over
powering information.
A wide variety of camera angles will also be used in my documentary. In all the existing
products I watched they switched camera angles repeatedly making it aesthetically more
pleasing to watch, as if it didn’t change it would get really boring and would most likely make
the audience switch off.
When filming my interview I will make sure the camera is eye level with the interviwee as it
captures every single facial expression made.
14. Audience Research
My documentary is aimed at 16-24
As the topic is a very required taste and wouldn’t be very interesting to everyone I want
to make it appealing by including stories told by the interviewee. I will include stories
from the interviewee such as riots they were at, football matches...
15.
The ratio of women to men is about the
same which is helpful as it is not bias and I
get equal responses, which is helpful as it is
not aimed at either genger.

All but one that answered are aged 16-21 maiking it
really usefull as my target audience is aimed at 16-
24, which will helps me make my product more appealing
to my audience.
Audience Research
17. Just under half the amount of people watch
documentarys which reflects how the younger
generation don’t tend to watch them.
Audience Research
18. By far the most popular response was to include stories
of what happened in the mounted section. There was
also a couple of votes on how to get into the mounted
section so I will briefly have that question in my
documentary but focous mainly on the stories of what
happened.

Genral Mounted section: The Mounted Section was first established in the 1805 but was called the
Horses Patrol.
Leeds mounted police:
Mounted police officers have been used by police in West Yorkshire since the early 1890s.
In 1974, the City of Bradford Police, Leeds City Police and the West Yorkshire Constabulary
combined to become the West Yorkshire Metropolitan Police. The stables at Leeds and Bradford
joined with those at Pontefract to accommodate the Force Mounted Section.
The unit moved to Wakefield in 1995 and the Section is further supported by dedicated stable hands
who look after the horses and manage the stables, leaving the officers to concentrate on their
policing duties.
The horses will normally retire somewhere between 18 and 20yrs of age and arrangements are
always made to find a final long term home for them.
Officers who apply to join the department are not required to have previous riding experience.
Successful recruits complete a 16 week initial course prior to being operational. They will then
continue to improve their riding skills with ongoing training, which is carried out to national
standards.

Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch
The Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch is the mounted section of the Metropolitan Police, the
police force of Greater London (excluding the City Of London, where the separate City of London
Police has its own mounted branch). The Mounted Branch was founded in 1760 and is the oldest
section of the Metropolitan Police. The Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch undertakes crowd
control duties, especially at football matches, but also conducts general street patrols and escorts
the Royal Guard change every morning.
