1. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Introduction
The effectiveness between the main product and the ancillary
text is rather a very important combination. In order for the
whole piece to become effective for our audience members the
role of including effective ancillary text is vital. With that being
said my main work and the ancillary text incorporated where very
cohesive in terms of having a clear similar trend.
The genre we are focusing on is Horror and with this knowledge
in order to produce an effective combination between our main
product and ancillary text, research was a key deciding factor
between the final outcome and its overall effect. The overall
impact of having an effective combination results in having a
positive reaction from our target audience, which was displayed
at the viewing of our premier for our trailer. This can be shown in
a video displaying the audiences reaction.
Throughout the continuation of this evaluation I will be
discussing and analysing how effective my poster , magazine
front cover was effective with the combination of my trailer...
2. Deconstruction of horror
film posters where a key
element to understanding
the reasoning purpose and
function of this specific
piece of ancillary text. With
that being said despite
deconstructing a variety of
film posters I thought it
would be useful to include
a rather more up to date
deconstruction which will
show my understanding of
the conventions expected
from real text and display
how as a group we where
able to incorporate these
conventions into our main
product.
Here I will include a deconstruction of the 2015
Christmas themed horror film, a similar hybrid to our
own. Through this analysis I will be pointing out the
most important decisions made on the front of the
poster
The name of the film is at the bottom of the
page this is a convention that is usually seen
within ancillary text as I believe is provides
the audience the opportunity to have a look
at the main image
There is a general focus on the main
image, despite the theme being
surrounding Christmas , the notion of
adding an intimidating hand suggest the
overall horror. Here the poster illustrates
perfectly how best to not reveal the
whole narrative of the film however it
allows the audience to easily identify the
genre.
There is not a use of
any credit however the
poster does offer a tag
line, this almost
become the catch
phrase for the film
The poster states ‘...is coming to town’
suggesting to the audience the
experience of the krampus will truly be a
real experience
There is cause for concern being
stated in the tag line of the
tradition Christmas line ‘you
better watch out...’ this puts a
unique spin on something which is
considered as a safe family
comforting ground
Poster
3. The use of a bold images attracts the
audience to wanting to watch the film
as it is unusual and portrays a form of
invasion of space which this not only
attracts the vulnerability the audience
provides but it also draws in a bigger
audience as the character doesn't
relate to anything which is recognizable
on earth, almost displaying a
monstrous element.
The involvement of a tradition Christmas
catch phrase like Krampus includes and
plays on the audience vulnerability, this
is also links to the target audiences age
range as many of the audience members
would have grown out of that child
mentality in the belief of Father
Christmas, with that being said we
though that our villain could replace
those happy ‘traditional’ memories with
a new found fear for horror
By incorporating a bold font
using the font web site
DaFont.com we would be able
to add a professional element
towards the font type, by
incorporating a harsh font it
would demonstrate the
seriousness of the film
suggesting it is not something
to play with or a force to
recon with. We also highlight
the her within gathering to
allow the audience to
understand that our villain is
female . Such symbolism is
displayed in many real media
text, suggesting the use of
conventions are present.
By incorporating the film rating ‘stars’ is
build customer confidence in the
production work, this will build a massive
assurance that the film/trailer is definitely
one to watch and to be feared off
Detailed poster deconstruction; demonstrating use of knowledge/
connection amongst real ancillary text
Our film poster illustrates a variety of attractive elements such a s deep link amongst the dark mysterious notion
surrounding Christmas . Its link to our trailer and magazine front cover is extremely event through the constant
involvement of our main villain with that being said it allows our products to become a marketing campaign for itself as it
is easily identifiable. This enforces the notion of synergy and its role it plays in assuring that the products are marketable
for the desired audience.
4. The magazine front
cover is a very
important element
of attract for our
target audience, like
the poster I analysed
the horror front
cover for insidious.
By doing this it visual
shows my
understanding of the
necessary
conventions which
as a collective we
found important to
introduce within our
own magazine front
cover.
The incorporation of including a
massive masthead shows the
audience the type of horror film
they are reading. Such as a horror
magazine is not age censored
suggesting that its merely for
those who enjoy this genre.
There are a mass use of
plugs shown on the front
cover this will entice the
audience to want to read the
magazine further as the
words may strike an area of
particular interests. It is
important to include such
plugs as it will draw the
audience in further to the
magazine
The use of a name of the film being
plastered on the front of the magazine
will not only attract the audience but
it also provides the possibility for
synergy to occur as it enables both the
magazine company and the film
makers to be able to gain an audience
. It also suggests that information
about the film may be provided or
even they may supply exclusive shots
for m the film.
There are some images provided from
various horror films this is an attraction point
for an audience as it suggest the magazine
understand the knowledge of history as well
as suggesting there may be a historic
connection with the film on the cove rand
the staple historic films included at the
bottom.
The main image is
an extremely vital
aspect in the
success of the
magazine as it has
to appeal to it
audience. The use
of this specific
image displays a
clear link within
the genre of
horror suggesting
conventions have
been made
Magazine front cover
5. The use of a bold masthead will
definitely attract those who are
fans of the genre especially due
to the fact that this specific
company, is well established
and recognized within the
horror entertainment industry.
The backing of a well
established house name will
also add professional attraction
towards the film and therefore
will become well ranked or even
respected.
The first thing that is usually shown an
seen on a magazine is the front cover
image, we decided to enhance the
element of horror by not showing the
full face of our villain, this will engage
the audience to it more as it is
something different, it becomes a point
of attraction as it is a subversion of
conventions usually found.
Adding names of famous
celebrity names becomes an
attractive element for people
in general, celebrity life and
culture is a huge aspect which
becomes an infatuating point
for normal civilians. By
including celebrity exclusives
it allows the audience to
become more intoned with
the entertainment industry.
This is particularly important
to include as out target
audience ranges from the age
15+, a age group of young
youth who feed of off
celebrity culture . However it
is rather important to include
actors/ celebrities well
associated with the genre
Including relevant colours was a key aspect for our magazine assuring
the theme of Christmas was evident was important form us to
include to add depth to the feel of the narrative this also links to the
use of features such as the mistletoe that is on the 50. this assures
all elements of the film/trailer are represent effectively
Assuring the name of our name
of the film/ trailer being visible
is rather important as it will
allow the audience to connect
imagery with the name easily
Detailed magazine deconstruction in relation to meeting ancillary text
6. As you can see there is of uniformity shown here as result to
assure all ancillary meets conventions to assure the audience
the ability of being able to recognise the font associated to the
trailer. The role of this becomes an attraction point for the
audience as well the marketers of the film/trailer .
The font being used on 3 products assures that the audience
will eventually be able to become familiar with it association.
The use of incorporating a metallic black was to add a bold
statement and effect to the font this also appears more
professional to the eye and can therefore be categorised with
professional standards .
Colour scheme
Having a clear colour scheme enables fluidity between the ancillary texts and the trailer. There is a
predominate use of red throughout the ancillary text. This use of red was used due to the connotations of
the relation to blood and danger, it also is a colour which I significantly present and dominate through out
the genre of horror , with this understanding we chose to incorporate this colour within our products, it is
well complimented by the heavy use of black thought out the ancillary text and trailer. The trailer doesn't
use black as colour of use but uses the darkness created by turning g of lights and shadows surrounding us.
The role of understanding how lighting works was a massive contribution towards the overall colour
scheme present throughout the trailer, as we where able to use lighting as a way to add a white or grey
scale around us.
