1. Critical Evaluation
Q2
How effective is the combination of
you main product and the ancillary
texts?
2. What were to trying to achieve in your main production? Was this also reflected
in the two advertising products?
• In our main production we wanted to achieve a 5minute short film that reflected a
Fantasy Drama genre.
• We also wanted it to appeal to a wide target audience but specifically teenage girls
or women, as this type of audience would be able to relate, understand and enjoy
our story line the best.
• The themes in the film that we want the viewer to enjoy and relate to are that luck
isn’t always good it can reveal things you may not want to know, that friendship
isn’t a smooth road and a feeling of realism because everyone owns a coin.
• I feel that the majority of what we aimed to achieve was reflected in our advertising
products. Both our film poster and radio trailer reflect our storyline and genre well.
As well as been aimed at the appropriate audience that links to our film
3. What were to trying to achieve in your main production? Was this also reflected
in the two advertising products?
The film poster has several aspects that reflect our
storyline;
The way the girls are positioned with one looking over the
other ones shoulder suggests that she is jealous or is
sneaking around without wanting to be seen.
Also the fact that two girls stand our clearly on the poster
and are holding a coin shows that they are likely to be the
main characters and the coin is something important.
We have also used a location that is in our film, for the
background. The poster gives a feel of a drama because of
the colours and lighting, it looks very natural and
undirected.
However if I was to make any changes I would enhance the
idea of the film been a fantasy drama, I could do this by
emphasising the coins magic by maybe adding a glow or
something magical.
4. What were to trying to achieve in your main production? Was this also reflected
in the two advertising products?
We wanted the radio trailers reflect a drama, and have an overall feel of been lifelike by not having
anything too much over the top and exaggerated like something like an action film would be with lots of
explosion sounds.
Similarly we want the music is very natural with nothing too strange.
We used the 2 radio trailer we found while researching, The Book of Eli and Superman, and tried to
apply all the positive points from each one into our own. These points included music the right volume,
nominations or award the film got, and possibly a review.
5. What were to trying to achieve in your main production? Was this also reflected
in the two advertising products?
We have created 2 radio trailers one with a female voice over and one with a male voiceover; this
is to appeal to more viewers. A female voice is more likely to appeal to women as they can relate
to the speaker. Also because there are very few radio trailers with female voiceovers this could
stand out and promote the film in a more unique way. However the male voice over is more
universal and more likely to be targeting more people both male and female.
For the sound clips in between we have tried to used key parts of the film that explains vaguely the
lucky coin with out giving away the full storyline. And have used a natural not too loud and
powerful background music.

6. How effective do you think the ancillary texts are in selling our production?
I think our poster is effective at selling our product because it
represents our film well and holds the viewers attention.
We have tried to make the poster grab the viewer’s attention and
we have done this by;
Using light colours in the background and
making the characters stand out as much as possible
This makes it hard not to see and so wanting the audience to
want to find out more.
Iconography has been used to give a glimpse into what the film
is going to be about.
For example;
we have positioned the character so that one girl is looking over
the shoulder of the other, this represents jealousy.
Also because they are both looking at a coin the front character
is holding this shows that it belongs to her but it effects both of
them in some way.
7. How effective do you think the ancillary texts are in selling our production?
We have also tried to keep the viewer interested by
having a composition that allows the audience to feel
as though they are there with the characters, this
gives tension and as well an almost emotional
connection.
Also the way the poster is composed. It has a path the
viewer will follow when looking at the poster.
The audience feel this way because the background
and characters are at the same level as they would be
if the viewer was really in that location.
8. How effective do you think the ancillary texts are in selling our production?
Appeal is created, by using the directors and actors names. This is because many people go and watch a film
because of a particular actor or the director that they have seen previously and enjoyed.
Even though our film isn’t as big as something from Hollywood we have still added the names of the actors
and crew because someone may still recognise the names.
We have made the second name of the actors more prominent because most people know actors better for
their second name.
We have also stated that the directors of this film have previously made another film ‘delusion’ and so may
appeal to anyone who has seen that film.
These techniques are also
used on big film posters
such as in her shoes…
9. How effective do you think the ancillary texts are in selling our production?
We have also kept the style through out we have used bright
colours in the poster that are also seen in the film.
The text colours are oranges and brown to represent the coin and
the name of the film that is on the poster is in the same style as in
the title sequence of the film.
10. How effective do you think the ancillary texts are in selling our production?
And finally to make our poster promotional we have
made it recognizable, it stands out from other posters
and represents our film good, therefore making it
easy for someone to see and and get an idea of the
film just from this image.
11. How effective do you think the ancillary texts are in selling our production?
I think both the radio trailers are good at selling our product as both together
catch a wider audience.
We have created one with a female voiceover and one with a male voiceover.
The female is likely to stand out as very few film trailers have a female as the
voiceover. However not everyone may agree with this and so have also
created a more universal trailer with a male voiceover.
In both trailers we have included sound clips from the film that give the
audience an idea of what to expect. We have also added several comments
about awards the film has been nominated for.
All these together bring a good selling point for the film and then it is only
up to the audience to whether they want to go and see the film.
