The combination of the trailer, poster, and magazine cover for the film "Modern Descartes" effectively promotes the film. Consistency was maintained across the texts in portraying typical drama genre codes and conventions while ensuring uniqueness. Font, costumes, and color schemes were linked between the texts to connect them and allow the audience to associate elements with the film. Social media integration increases the success of engaging their target demographic of 15-25 year olds. Audience feedback validated the synergy between the texts in effectively representing and promoting the film.
3. Personal Respone
In my opinion, I feel that the combination of our ancillary texts and
main product is successful in promoting the film 'Modern Descartes'.
I think the reason for this success is due to adapting and challenging
ideas of real media texts that appeal to our target audience. Films
such as 'Fences', 'No Country For Old Men' and 'Sleight' also gave me
insight into favourable and important codes/conventions to include in
our trailer as well. My group and I also made sure to portray these
typical aspects of the drama genre with a level of consistency across
all texts while still making sure that they are unique and stand out
against other similar representations.
4. Title
Fonts were a big part of the trailer as this helped us to keep the
continuity of the poster. This would then mean our audience could
associate the font with our film as they would have seen it in two
different places which can easily create an impression/image that
remains in their head.
We were only unable to use this font on our magazine cover as the
magazine is not supposed to seem as though it has been created by
the same production company.
Font was still important as we had to make sure the fonts we chose
were relevant and suited the genre, so choosing Times New Roman
for our magazine was a good choice because it is a classic font that
would be used for many drama films.
5. Clothing
The costume of the two protagonists are shown in the trailer and the
magazine. We tried to make the 'hoodie' a staple part of the
protagonists costume in all 3 media texts but the poster also shows a
nice contrast in Cameron's personality because he is dressed in
smart, school attire. By showing the hoodie and rucksack in both
ancillary text and trailer, creates a strong link between the two. The
costume/style of clothing is urban which is important because we
wanted people to think of these characters when they see similar
sportswear. Showing it in different aspects will help the audience to
associate these things.
6. Colour Schemes
Colour was a big part of the trailer, poster and magazine cover as we used
two main colours in all three; black and white. This was done because
we wanted the colours to reflect the black and white reality of life that
audiences can associate with Cameron's story. This works well in
different kinds of drama films which may have a more melancholy or
negative tone at times.
These popular colours connect all media texts together, however, the
colour scheme we used on the film poster is the only one that is slightly
different because we chose a blue and purple fade into white. We decided
to do this because the poster still needs to be exciting and bold.
In the trailer black and white was mainly used for instances where text
appears. Throughout the trailer, we actually use natural colours and light
because we haven’t edited any of the colours or added any filters. We did
this so it would seem as real as possible for our target audience.
7. Main image
Our trailer follows the life struggles of Cameron, the main character.
His image was therefore the most important element to include in
the poster, magazine and trailer. The characters help link these three
together as he is portrayed in each and looks basically the same in
terms of clothing, facial expression and body language.
8. Other Links
I think the combination of our texts would be successful in the film
industry because of how we know to incorporate social media into
our ideas. By using clear links to most media with the hashtag
symbol, the film instantly catches the attention of our target
audience.
It is very rare for someone between the ages of 15-25 with no links to
social media platforms or the internet. By targeting this
demographic through the use of social media in our media texts, I
think it dramatically improves the success rate of our film if it were
to be out there in the film industry.
9. Conclusion
Overall, I think our groups three products link well together and are
very effective. The two ancillary tasks clearly represent the film they
are promoting and create synergy between them.
To support this, we were constantly asking for audience feedback on
our media texts to make sure people could see a link between them.
Their opinions allowed us the time to go back and
make any necessary improvements before the final drafts. This
confirms my groups confidence in how successful our main media
product and ancillary texts are at effectively promoting our film.
