Evaluation Question 2
1. How effective is the combination of your
main product and ancillary texts?
2. Character Continuity
A main element that gives our media products a strong brand identity is the frequent use of
the same character. The trailer features one main character as does our magazine cover and
film poster. The benefits of this is that it gives us good recognition by our audience as this
character when seen can be related straight back to our film as they appear on all of our
promotional products.
As you can see here all of the media products we created feature our female character, the
mise en scene is also kept frequent in all products with the costume of the grey hoodie and
the same makeup.

3. Tag lines
A tag line is something we used heavily throughout the creation of our products. We decided
on two phrases that we wanted to use through our products these being;
‘I had no choice’ and ‘I had to get away’
These two tag lines we decided would be best to be used frequently in the hope that it will
help people recognise and draw links to our film by the target audience (this being youth and
younger adults, perhaps more females than males)
We added these tag lines into our teaser trailer (in the voice over), magazine cover and film
poster;
4. Target Audience
It was important to us that we made it clear who our target audience was and to appeal to
them, as this was all a part of building our identity as a brand. Our target audience was aimed
at teens and young adults with a higher percentage of female audiences then males. We
decided on this target audience by looking into real media texts of the same genre with
similar conventions and what their audience was, we particularly looked at the film ‘Safe
Haven’
We appealed to our audience did in many different ways these being;
By incorporating social media into our media products; we created a hash tag for people to
use and discuss the film. Youth and younger adults are more likely to use social media and
hash tags therefore we feel this element will appeal to our target audience.
The age of the main character is also something I feel makes it clear who our target audience
is and will appeal to our audience. We wanted the main character to portray a women in her
late teens/ early adulthood, perhaps 19 years of age. Having a younger character means it is
more relatable to people of this age.
5. Reviews
We added reviews into all of our media products as this is something seen allot in British
independent films such as the one we where creating marketing products for. We looked at
British independent drama ‘Fish Tank’ and the reviews this included.
By having the same reviews across the products we created it gave it an element of continuity, as
the reviews could be recognised ;
Fish Tank reviews
(similar to the reviews
we created)
6. Institutional Infomation
To insure we had good brand recognition it was vital we had all our institutional information in
our teaser and billing block on our poster, Therefore the audience can make links and
recognise the film and its institution easily.
We have our Hash
Tag on our billing
block on our
poster as well as
in our teaser
trailer.
We put our company indent on
our billing block in the same
font and layout as our teaser
trailer so it was easy to
recognise the institution.
7. Text
We decided to keep our text similar on our poster and teaser trailer, however the text style is
different on the magazine as it has different conventions as it is designed by a different company
(the magazine company)
As you can see although the text is not identical it is
very similar in the fact that it is simple and black, we
decided to go for a more simplistic text as to not
take away from the images and to come across
more sleek
The magazine shows a more
fun style of text with its
rounded edges, it goes with
the magazines conventions
and design.
8. Narrative
Finally, to insure the film narrative is easily identified there where certain aspect we had to make
sure where prominent in all three media products.
Our narrative of having a young women running away due to an abusive relationship was
something we wanted to carry through our trailer, poster and magazine cover. To do this we
made sure the main female character had a similar sad and worried expression on all
products.
As you can see below our products involve the same character with a similar expression of
sadness and worried concern;
