- The client initially wanted 6 individual films but given time constraints, agreed to 3 films focusing on ideas 1, 2, and 4
- Filming children for one part of the project proved difficult, but the filmmaker was able to find child participants through parental contacts
- While most of the planned filming was achieved, the filmmaker was unable to include a planned encounter between children and animals
- Overall working with the client was difficult due to lack of ongoing communication from the client organization after initial meetings

1. Evaluation
After having our first meeting with the client they had outlined some
specific things they would like us to achieve. Because there are 6 people
in the group the client initially wanted 6 individual films, though given
the time wehad to create these films we had to ask the client for
another idea.
They finally
agreed to
have 3 of the
6 films they
had
previously
chosen. They
chosefor us
to focus on
ideas 1,2 and
4. For my part
of the client
projectI’ve
been looking
at the
children’s
section. The
difficulty of
this was
finding the
children
to talk
to. We
asked
the client
for help
with
setting
up interviews with our chosen target audience but the advice they gave
us turned out not to be as helpful as we had hoped for. However wedo
end up finding participants through parental contacts. This turned out
2. to be a lot better due to the children being in a well-known, friendly
environment. We chose to film at their schoolbecause we thought that
it would make the children feel a lot more comfortablein frontof the
camera. For the child specific section only we achieved mostof what we
had panned to do. We had the children talking about their experiences
with animals, which animals they had seen and wherethey have seen
them. The only thing we didn’t achieve for the video was the children’s
face to face encounter with animals. This didn’t happen for many
reasons. Onebeing that it would be too much late noticed, it needs to
be paid for, we would need more parental consent, possibleallergies to
the animals.
My video is primarily aimed at primary schoolchildren so I wanted to
make my video look friendly and approaching I did this by having the
video set up in a
brightly lit classroom
and having the camera
set up as a medium
shotonly showing the
children from the waste
up. Initially I was going
to have the entirety of
the video shot as the
group to give the video
more of a kid friendly
look to the video.
Though throughout
the shotthe children
were speaking over
each other so I
decided to havesome
personalinterviews
which turned out to
be a great idea
because the kids
opened up a bit
more, were more
confident and made
some really good points. I also wanted the titles to be aimed towards
children. I did this by making the title look like something out of game,
3. doing this could intrigue children to watch on. The titles also have a
write on effect, which is quite pleasing to watch. Families, who want to
get outdoors more, could also watch the video. This video gives them
plenty of ideas of whatthey could do, such as adventureparks or nature
walks. Children seeing other children enthuse about nature could make
them wantto imitate that. The tone of the film is mostly positive
throughoutbut does turn negative when one of the children starts
talking about the effects of deforestation. I decided to shootthe video in
the sit down interview style because I think that people a mostlikely to
sit though an entire video if it is set up like that.
Because my film is
targeted at parents
and children, I
needed things that
worked for both the
target ages of each
group. For the
children I had the
use of toy animals
to easier
understand what
animals the children
on the video were
talking about, or if
someone watching
didn’t understand
what animal was
being spoken about
there was a physical
form of the animal.
This idea worked
really well with the
children evolved in
the video as well because they took this specific exercise quite seriously
and gavemore thought to the answers they gave. For the parents I
included things like popups of places the kids talked about such as
“piglets” this is a farmactivity place that parents could take their
children to. I think that my video is appropriatefor my audience because
it has aspects for both the children and the parents/guardians of the
4. children, so I do think that it would be a successfulvideo advertisement
for trying to get children/families moreinterested in nature.
Overallworking with our client was quite difficult becausethe person
who we had our initial meeting with ended up leaving his position at the
YWT Company. This turned out to not be a good thing for the project
because wehad no further face-to-face contact with the client. However
we did send emails to the contacts that wewere passed onto. Initially
they were helpful, but as time went on they stopped replying to emails
regarding the project. This stopped production for a while because I was
unsurewhatto make for the client.
When looking at other videos similar to mine I found one titled
“YorkshireNatureTriangle” this video has been produced by YWT so any
similarities I find in this video could be considered a good thing due to
them using it before. Both my
video and this video open with
shots of differentparts of
nature. I believe this is done so
that the viewer knows straight
away what type of video it is.
The scenic shots could also be
used to draw people in such as
photographers, filmmakers and
hikers who want to visit the
photographed places. Another
similarity in the video is the
length of the video its self. The
videos that havebeen created
are for informational use only
not a full-length movie on
nature, meaning the videos
can be quick and shortonly
giving the relevant amount of
information. Both videos also
include children this could be
so that other children see this video and want to get involved in nature
as well. A differencewith the videos is that the video by YWT has no
speaking in it, justa music layer over the video footage. This makes the
5. person watching the video connect a lot less with the people in the
video. This could make the person either bored with the content or click
off it completely. Whereas with my video it has people talking
practically throughoutthe whole video, with a softinstrumental in the
background. This makes it easier for the person watching to connect
with people in the video and not want to click off. The production styles
for the videos are also completely different my video the camera angle
doesn’tmove its justset up as an interview. Where as the YWT video is
filmed in lots of differentplaces with a lot of different camera angles.
The differences here is the production budget, YWT would be working
with a lot better equipment and a lot more people on hand to assistwith
the shoot, whereas for my video there was only two people working on
the shootand only myself working on the edit. I watched another video
by YWT titled “Volunteering at Spurn”. The similarities I noticed with this
video is that they used audio from one clip and video from another and
layered them over each other. They could of done this to show relevant
images regarding whatis being spoken. I also did this with my video, to
show the importance of looking after nature. Both videos are also set up
with a standard interview setting. The difference with these videos is
one is about volunteering within natureand one is about the facts of
nature. Another big difference with this video and the one I created is
the fact the video fromYWT takes place in differentlocations which
liven ups the video and the video I created stays in the sameplace,
which can get boring if the video is too long.
The weaknesses of my project werethat from not having much contact I
was pretty much creating my projectwithout much guidance from my
client. This meant for a lot of the project I was not very confidentwith
the outcome of a lot of my project. Another weakness I encountered
was during filming. This
was with the younger
children that volunteered
to take partin my project.
During some sections of
the video the children
would become distracted if
someone else was talking,
them being distracted and
moving around created a
lot of extra noise/sound.
6. The rustling noises that was created by this makes the project look very
unprofessional, as wellas being distracting to the audience. We could
have re-filmed thoseparts of the videos but decided againstthis due to
it being an interview and the responses thechildren would havegiven a
second time round could have been less detailed or not as genuine as
the firsttime round. However, thestrengths of my project werethat the
children were genuinely interested in what they were talking about.
Because the children knew someinformation on the client without us
having to prep them makes the client look informative as well as the
video gives of a professionallook. We were originally going to have the
children sat together for the entirety of the video but due to the children
talking over each other and them being distracted easier we decided to
interview them separately. This gave the children more freedom to talk
about their points.
When thinking aboutfuture productions, I wantto be a lot more
prepared when it comes to who will be in my production. I feel like I
focus a lot of my attention on my planning work rather than who will
actually be in it, and because of that I can lose up to almost 1-2 weeks of
production time. Then I can focus moretime on how my video looks
when it comes to editing. Then I havetime to either edit or sometimes
re-film some parts. With future projects I would like to look into more
technical things, this could be with visualthings that could make my
video look a lot nicer to watch.
