The document provides an evaluation of a client project produced by the author for the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. The project involved interviewing children about nature conservation. While the original plan was to film the interviews during an animal encounter, this was not possible. As a result, the author changed the focus to discuss a local nature site called Askham Bog that the Trust is campaigning to protect. The evaluation discusses how the author ensured the product was appropriate for both the client and intended audience of children. It also reflects on communication issues with the client as the project progressed and compares the final production to examples on the Trust's YouTube channel. Overall, the author believes the strengths were the clear interviews but weaknesses were an inability to obtain all planned footage or

1. Evaluation – ClientProject
1. Outline the agreedaudience andintentionsforyourproject, doyouthinkyouachieve this?
The audience formypart of the clientprojectwiththe Yorkshire Wildlife Trustwastofocus on
gettingopinionsfromdifferentchildrenaboutnature.The originalplanwastointerviewandfilm
themduringan animal encountertointerview boththe childrenandthe handlerfortheiropinions
on nature and animal conservation, includingthe local areaat AskhamBog. The specific
demographicwere childrenaged4to 11 of any gender.Iwaspleasedtobe able to interview
childrenof differentagesbecause Igotslightlydifferentresponsesbutstill all positive inthe opinion
that nature and wildlife conservationwere important forourenvironmentandshouldn’tbe ignored.
However,withthe school we intendedtofilmat,AcombPrimarySchool,theydidn’thave anyanimal
encountersbookedinforthe studentsandwiththe winterbreakcomingupwere unable toorganise
anythingtocreate that desiredfootage. So, whatIdidto sort thisout wasremembersomething
fromwhat wasdiscussedinthe meetingandtheircurrentcampaigntostophousesbeingbuilton
AskhamBog. Especiallysince one of the children,Max, hadspokenaboutthe site specificallyabout
that I thoughtitwouldworkquite well togetthispointacross. While itdoesn’tdirectlyfollow the
exactlinesof whatwasagreedwiththe client,Istill thinkthatmyfilmcouldbe useful forthe
Yorkshire Wildlife Trustasitcan be usedas part of an ongoingcampaignto stopbuildingplansfor
the Bog and gettingthese opinionsfromchildrencouldhave more of animpactthan the adults.
2. How didyouensure yourproductwas appropriate foryourclient? How successful wasthis?
(thinkaboutspecificchoicesinproduction,e.g.contributors,filming,choice of style,tone,
etc)
I had some difficultyensuringthatmyproductwas appropriate forthe client.Atourmeeting,
contentwasdiscussedmuchmore thanthe style andtonesof videothathe wanted. We briefly
wentoverthat the videoideallyhadinterviewsandoverlayingb-roll inparts andthat the
interviewsideallyhadthe questioninthe answerratherthanbeingaskedbutnotmuchelse.
ThisI founddo be quite difficultbecause Iwasn’tsure how easilythe childrenwouldunderstand
whatI meantbut it turnedoutthat theiranswerswere clearinwhatthey were talkingabout
anyway.I didwonderif more wouldbe outlinedthroughoutthe productionprocessasIwent
alongand got tipsand requestsfrommyclient, butaftertheystoppedreplyingtoour emails, I
realisedthiswasn’tgoingtohappen.Thismeant thatIhad free reignonhow I wantedto layout
my video, butItriedto keepitas close towhat wasbrieflymentioned withthe layoutwithout
any feedbackthroughout.Andwiththe ideal contentnotbeingavailable,IdidwhatIthought
was bestandchange the focusto somethingthatisimportanttothe Trust at thistime. While it
may notbe exactlywhatwasdiscussed,I’mhopingthe YorkshireWildlife Trustcanstill use itto
theiradvantage.
2. 3. How didyouensure yourproductwas appropriate foryouraudience? How successful was
this?(thinkaboutspecificchoicesinproduction,e.g.contributors,filming,choice of style,
tone,etc)
Withthe maindemographicbeingchildren,Ididn’twantthe videotoseemtoomature andbore
them.Soto do this,I keptthe videofairlyshortandthe perspective of the cameraoftenswitched
betweenthe intervieweeandclipsonAskhamBogso that while watchingitthe videodoesn’tlinger
on one thingfortoo long.I alsomade sure that the alreadybrightcoloursweren’tdampenedbut
accentuatedbythe adjustmentlayers.Youngchildrenare drawntobright colours,soI wantedto
keepthemvibranttohopefullyholdthe attentionof the viewerswatching.Butatthe same time,I
still wantedthe colourstolookrealistic. Afterall,Ithoughtitwouldbe likelythatthe children
watchingit, especiallythe youngeragesof the demographic, wouldbe withthe parentssoIwanted
to make sure that it couldbe understoodbyboth. That iswhyI thoughthavingjustchildrenspeaking
wouldworksowell ratherthaninterviewingateachertoo. That wayall the age rangescan
understandwhatthey’re sayingandtryingtogetacross. The tone of the videowasalsoimportant.
While Iwantedto stressthatprotectingthe environmentwasimportantandthatthe videowas
serious,Ididn’twantto make the videotoosad.Thiswas whyI had trouble withthe music;while
the happiermusicI foundworkedwellwiththe b-roll asitemphasisedthatAskhamBoghadnatural
beautyandthat the site itself wasahappyplace to be inand the interview clipsatthe endtookto it
well, the clipinvolvingMax talkmore seriouslydidn’tsuitthe music. Therefore, Ididtake some
differentmusictogo withthatpart but I didn’twantto keepthaton for toolongbecause of what I
wantedtoput across.
4. Explainhowyouworkedwithyourclienttorealise theirrequirementsforthe project?
I was quite disappointedwiththe amountof communicationbetweenourgroupand ourclientby
the endof our project.Atthe start it wentreally well, ourgroupquicklyorganisedameeting via
email withone of the Trust’smemberstodiscusswhatpromotional material theywanted. The
meetingitself wassuccessful too, witheachpairwithinourgroupof six havinga targetaudience of
differentage rangesandwhat the videowouldhopefullyinclude. However, the personwe spoke to
for our interviewwasleavingtheirpositionatthe endof that weekandpassedourinformationon
to othermembers.Thisdidquite annoyme,especiallywhenfromthatmoment,all the
communicationdroppedalmostinstantly.There wereafew emailsof introductionbutthen they
stoppedreplyingtoouremail and we ceasedto hearanythingelse fromthemabouthow the project

Thisvideowasmade by the Yorkshire Wildlifetrustlastyearto promote volunteeringatAskham
Bog. The videousesacombinationof interview andb-roll clipssetoutsimilarlytomine inhow the b-
roll overlayswiththe voice of the interviewee.Idohowevershow more of the interview clips
because the children were quiteexpressive, andIdidn’twanttoleave thatout. The colourson this
videoare alsobrightand vibrant, whetheritisthe natural footage orslightlyedited, the brighter
coloursdefinitelymake the place more invitingandlookanicerplace to be.That’s whatI was trying
to getacross in myb-roll.Ihad actuallyhopedthatthe horseswouldstill be onthe bogwhenI came
to filmbutwasunluckyinthat theyhad justleft. Nevertheless, itallowedme tofocusonshowing
the beautyof the plants inthe bog that supportedthe wildlife.
Thisvideo,alsomade bythe
Yorkshire Wildlife Trusthasa similar
objective of advertisingthe benefits
of volunteeringwiththe Yorkshire
WildlifeTrust,butona broader
scale than the otherwhichfocused
on one particularsite. While this
videodoesn’tinclude anykindof
interview withanyone,the film
includesmanydifferentclipsfrom
othervideoscompiledtogether. It
doesopen ina similarwayto my
videobyflickingbetweenclipsof
wildlife andnature asan
introductiontothe otherparts of the videowhere the titlescome in.Thisvideodoesn’thave any
speakingbutshortphrasesthatpop up to get the message across.I don’tinclude anytitlesandtext
on screenexceptatthe endbecause Ididn’tthinktheywere neededbefore.Ialsodidn’tthinkthat
manychildrenwatchingthe videowouldwanttoreadtexton screenandwouldprefertowatch and
listenwhichmade mydecisioneasier. The textisalsosplitoverthe spanof the video, usingclipsin
between togive viewersthe chance toreadit before the nextpartcomeson.I didsomething
similar, usingclipsof b-roll inbetween the interviewsto breakthemupandgive a breakbetween
either. The editingwasfairlysimilar, withsimple colouringshowingthe brightcoloursof the
landscape whichhadbeenwhatIwas goingfor.
6. Discussthe strengthsandweaknessesof yourproductionfromyourownperspective –what
do youthinkworked,didn’twork,etc.
A weaknessof myproduction wasthatI couldn’tquite getall of the footage thatI’d originallyhoped
for andagreedwiththe client. Withthe style of videothatIwas goingfor,I didn’tgetchance to use

4. some of the technical videoeditingtricksthatI wasgoingto use.Since titlesweren’tnecessarily
neededandfromchangingthe logos,Ididn’tneedtodo the original planIhad forit. I thinkthatan
effectlike thatmighthave workedwell for myvideobutthe simple layoutworkedwell too. Another
weaknessIfoundwasnotbeingable touse the b-roll thatwastakenat the school whenthe
interviewswere filmed. Withhavinghadtrouble withthe adjustmentlayersIcouldn’tbrightenup
the dark footage andhave it lookrightwiththe others and I didn’thave time toeditthembackinto
my newtimeline.Itwouldhave beennice to involve clipsof the childrenbeinginvolvedinnature
and lookingforwildlife.
A strengthof my productionisthatI was pleasedwithhow well the interviewswere filmed. The
camera stayedinthe same place throughoutandall of the childreninthe interviewswereeasily
visible inthe centre of the frame andthe room waswell lit. Ialsolikedhow the interviewswere
spreadoverthe video,where IusedclipsfromAskhamBog.Ithoughtit workedwell tofurthershow
the pointthat I wasmaking. The differentcameraanglesof these shotsthatIusedwere goodtoo,
swappingfocusesandusingthe reflectionof waterona benchmade some aestheticallyappealing
shotsin betweenthe clipsof Max,Mollyand Bill talking. Ithoughtthe colourcorrectionworkedwell
too. While itdidn’tneedmuch, the little difference tothe b-roll broughtoutthe greenandI thought
it wasa nice, subtle andrealisticchange thatstill improvedthe overallqualityof myvideo.
