IN WHAT WAY DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
Our media product uses, develops and challenges forms and conventions of real media products.
Films such as Green Street Hooligans and Football Factory portray the main character from the
start of the film and throughout to give the audience a view on the character. In our film “Day
Aht’ In Sheff” we use, mise-en-scene, editing and sound to give the main character a portrayal,
for example…
Mise-en-scene
The can of beer is used to show even from early in the
morning the character likes to drink alcohol which can carry a
stigma of “Hooligan” or “Misbehaving” this automatically
creates a representation of the character which will carry
throughout the film.
The North Face jacket worn by the character uses
iconography as North Face is commonly worn by football
hooligans and creates a portrayal of the character that he is a
football hooligan.
From the very opening shot, we used a small bag with flour in
it to make it look like drugs. So from the very start, the
audience are already starting to see what the character is into
and what he is like.
Sound
In “Day Aht In Sheff” we used non-copyrighted rock-indie music loudly over most of the scenes.
We chose to play the music loudly because it can create a representation of the characters in the
film, such as loud and rowdy. We chose the music as it is high tempo and has a strong beat which
also helps to portray the characters.
Editing
In the first 3 minutes of “Day Aht’ In Sheff” a lot of fast paced editing is used to match the pace of
the music which also links to rhythmic editing. We used jump-cuts when the lads are walking
from place to place to show time passing but for every cut we did in the jump-cut sequence we
made I match the music which helps give the film a flow and gives it continuity.
Finally, our title sequence is very simplistic which fits in with the
other films we have researched such as Green Street and Football
Factory, I think that the simple look we have given the title
sequence works well with the genre of film we have.
