6. As you can see the image on the left is a double page spread style
model from Top of the Pops magazine. Several conventional features
have been used such as bursts, text boxes, anchorage and direct eye
contact to make it look like a typical music magazine. There is an
‘Exclusive WIN’ anchorage which could act as a hook in order for the
magazine to gain more interest. A mid/long shot has been used which
dominates the page and gives clear identifications that the article is
about ‘Cheryl Cole’. The information is formatted in an interview
technique which demonstrates the text being more personal and makes
the readers feel involved. This is also presented in a text box so it
stands out from the background and making it easier to read. Other text
boxes are used around the page to section the information, making it
more appealing. Bursts are also used which supply information about
what is taking place in the interview and a quote from what Cheryl says.
This can again draw in reader’s attention and gives the layout more
variation. As you can see, in the majority of the images the artists are
giving the camera direct eye contact making the readers feel more
directed and focuses on the article.
As you can see the image on the left is my double page spread for
my magazine. I have tried to stick to conventional ideas as I didn’t
really know how to structure a double page spread and it gave me a
basis on where to begin and what it should look like. I have tried to

I had some difficulties as I couldn’t structure things the way I
wanted them to go. On the next slide you will be able to see the
features I used to achieve the end result.

8. From over viewing my three documents; front cover, contents page and double page spread, I have mainly
stuck to conventional ideas in order to create the correct mood and tone of the magazine.
Besides this I have challenged some aspects of the style models to experiment and see if they worked well
with the genre of magazine or not. The main feature that I challenged would be the editor’s letter on the
contents. I felt that this was needed to give the contents more substance and to make it a little bit more
exciting and adventurous to read. In my opinion I think this worked well as it didn’t take up much room
and gave it a personal touch – making it sound like there was an older figure guiding them and supplying
information about what there is to come. Another feature that I challenged was the tag line and media
institute logo on the front cover. The reason on why I decided to not include these was because I felt they
were irrelevant and readers didn’t really take much notice of them. With these not present it meant more
attention could be paid to the sell lines and main stories of the magazine. From looking at my front cover,
I cannot tell that these conventional features are missing, however if they were put on it would have made
the cover look more detailed.
The main technique I used was by creating a studio style shot of the main artist that will be featuring in
my magazine. In order to do this I set up a photo shoot with the correct lighting and background props to
make it look conventional. Alongside this I made sure that I dressed her in the correct clothing to suit the
style of the music magazine. I chose girly clothing and colours as these will most likely attract my target
audience. The model is attractive which is also conventional as a lot of pop artists are good looking; this
goes to support the ideology of pop artists.
During the process of my magazine I tried to stick to a house style by maintaining the 3 colour scheme
and continuously using the same font and font sizes. Effectively this will make the magazine more
recognisable.
The area which I developed was the target audience. I chose to target similar ages of 12-17 year old
females as I feel young girls would be most interested in this kind of information. I done a lot of primary
research which involved following the steps of ‘SAGEL’ social-economic class, age, gender, ethnicity and
lifestyle in order to achieve my end product.
