Open Science, Open Data: towards a new transparent and reproducible ecosystemLIBER Europe
Presented at the Preforma Open Source Workshop 8 April 2016
As a library membership organization, LIBER works on addressing Open Science barriers. Standardisation of file formats can really help in overcoming some of these barriers: it enables us to process and preserve data in a controlled way, it helps ensure that outputs are really open and accessible in the long term and it improves interoperability of new tools and services. Making sure data is stored in a controlled way and can be (re) used today and in the future is an important element in Open Science. We see this as not only a technical challenge but also a social one: awareness, trust and community building is needed in order to ensure uptake of these standards. Libraries therefore have a valuable role to play in the development of good research data management throughout all phases of the Open Data lifecycle.
Data Science: History repeated? – The heritage of the Free and Open Source GI...Peter Löwe
Data Science is described as the process of knowledge extraction from large data sets by means of scientific
methods. The discipline draws heavily from techniques and theories from many fields, which are jointly used to
furthermore develop information retrieval on structured or unstructured very large datasets. While the term Data
Science was already coined in 1960, the current perception of this field places is still in the first section of the hype cycle according to Gartner, being well en route from the technology trigger stage to the peak of inflated
expectations.
In our view the future development of Data Science could benefit from the analysis of experiences from
related evolutionary processes. One predecessor is the area of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The
intrinsic scope of GIS is the integration and storage of spatial information from often heterogeneous sources, data
analysis, sharing of reconstructed or aggregated results in visual form or via data transfer. GIS is successfully
applied to process and analyse spatially referenced content in a wide and still expanding range of science
areas, spanning from human and social sciences like archeology, politics and architecture to environmental and
geoscientific applications, even including planetology.
This paper presents proven patterns for innovation and organisation derived from the evolution of GIS,
which can be ported to Data Science. Within the GIS landscape, three strategic interacting tiers can be denoted: i) Standardisation, ii) applications based on closed-source software, without the option of access to and analysis of the implemented algorithms, and iii) Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) based on freely accessible program code enabling analysis, education and ,improvement by everyone. This paper focuses on patterns gained from the synthesis of three decades of FOSS development. We identified best-practices which evolved from long term FOSS projects, describe the role of community-driven global umbrella organisations such as OSGeo, as well as the standardization of innovative services. The main driver is the acknowledgement of a meritocratic attitude.
These patterns follow evolutionary processes of establishing and maintaining a web-based democratic culture
spawning new kinds of communication and projects. This culture transcends the established compartmentation and
stratification of science by creating mutual benefits for the participants, irrespective of their respective research
interest and standing. Adopting these best practices will enable

Library labs as experimental incubators for digital humanities researchSally Chambers
This presentation was delivered as one of the keynotes at the 23rd International Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries (TPDL 2019) on 9-12 September 2019 at OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University, Oslo, Norway. http://www.tpdl.eu/tpdl2019/keynotes/
Can we consider libraries as the laboratories of the humanities? If so, would they be good places to observe and better understand the everyday practices of the humanist at work? Similarly, can the notion of the laboratory as a place of scientific experimentation be applied to libraries as a place to experiment with digital cultural heritage collections? Could “library labs” enable humanities researchers, cultural heritage professionals and computer scientists to work more closely together to push the boundaries of contemporary humanistic enquiry? Using Bruno Latour’s anthropological observations of the scientific practices of biologists in their laboratory as a starting point, we will consider the concept of libraries as the laboratories of the humanities. Extending this concept further, we will consider, “what is a library lab?” by examining the activities of library labs internationally. Finally, we will introduce the emerging Digital Research Lab at the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR) as part of a long-term collaboration with the Ghent Centre for Digital Humanities (GhentCDH). Using “KBR Labs” as a case study, we will consider the role that library labs could play as experimental incubators for digital humanities research.

Of Libraries and Labs: Effecting User-Driven Innovation - RLUK Members Mtg 2015Alex Humphreys
JSTOR has launched a new Labs team charged with partnering with the community to seek out new opportunities and refine and validate them through experimentation. The JSTOR Labs team has been using Flash Builds -- high-intensity, short-burst, user-driven development efforts -- in order to prototype new ideas and get to a user saying “Wow" in as little as a week. In this talk, I¹ll describe how we’ve done this, highlight the partnerships, skills, tools and content that help us innovate, and suggest ways that libraries can adopt these methods to support innovation and the digital humanities.

Shaping the academic library of the future: adapt, empower, partner, engage
The tradition of the Stellenbosch University Annual Library Symposium of being a platform for discussing new library and information services and developments will continue at the 14th Annual Library Symposium in November 2016. The discussion will be turned to the shaping of the academic library of the future. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of adapting to users’ needs, adapting to new roles as librarians, adapting as a library, empowerment of staff and clients and the importance of partnerships and engagement.
The theme is partly based on the recent OCLC report, Shaping the Library to the life of the user: adapting, empowering, partnering, engaging. In this report it becomes clear that “research and learning needs are changing. Higher education is reconfiguring. As a result of these massive changes, the library must pivot and adapt”. The following core themes are mentioned in this report: to empower users, to empower the library, form partnerships and to engage the campus community. The report advises libraries to be able to “move from offering a fixed set of services to a ‘constant beta’ mode of service evolution” .
Three different sessions will focus on the following themes, all related to the shaping of the academic library of the future:
Digital innovation: Topics of this session may include Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Research Data Management, Big Data, E-learning, Digital Humanities, Next Generation Systems.
Collaboration / Partnerships : Partnerships with OCLC, SANLIC and other consortia as well as other collaboration possibilities will be discussed.
The user experience: Academic staff, researchers and students of local universities will share their expectations as users of academic libraries.

FryskLab - Education, innovation and maker culture in the libraryFers
FryskLab is an initiative of Library Service Friesland (Bibliotheekservice Fryslân, BSF) and the Frisian public library network. Friesland is a rural province in the northern part of the Netherlands and FryskLab, operating from a truck formerly used as a bookmobile, is Europe’s first official library FabLab, or “fabrication laboratory”. Its varied team consists of IT specialists, arts management professionals and librarians, and its goal is to examine the extent to which this mobile FabLab initiative contributes to the development of creative, technical and entrepreneurial skills of children and young adults. The project is ultimately expected to result in an increase of the innovative capacities of the entire province of Friesland.
Officially launched in 2014, FryskLab has so far received a number of awards, including the American Library Association’s (ALA) 2017 Presidential Citations for Innovative International Library Projects award. Making knowledge and sharing the future, the motto of the FryskLab project, reinforces the role of libraries in facilitating access to various “tools of knowledge” (equipment and technology) and providing support in the form of various educational and training programmes, effectively bringing together physical and digital, traditional and modern means of acquiring knowledge.

Public libraries in The Netherlands: a powerful networkFers
In this presentation I will briefly present the structure of the public library network in the Netherlands, with particular emphasis on the way public library innovation is “organised”. There is currently a community of practice (CoP) organised for every specific area of library innovation which at the same time also addresses officially established national priorities, i.e. lifelong learning, development of traditional library services, education of the young population, etc. Librarians in each of the CoPs share experiences specific to their field based on which they identify future activities aimed at the development of the particular field. Librarians included in this CoP system come from libraries of all types and sizes regardless of the province or region.

Learning by Making - Internet Librarian 2015 #ili2015 Fers
Libraries are about knowledge creation. They must return to this core but have to make progress at the same time.
In my view connecting with maker culture, or better yet, be a vibrant part of it, is one of the ways to achieve this goal. Essentially makers and librarians are the same, except for the hands-on approach.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
