1. EUROPEAN COLONIZATION IN THE
AMERICAS AND THE
INDEPENDENCE OF THE UNITED
STATES

2. ANALYE THE LEARNER
I will be teaching a 9th grade American History
class in a public school system the process of
colonization in the Americas that led to the
independence of the United States. There are 20
students in my class and they are predominately
white. There are 12 male students and 8 female
students and the race ratio is 90% white and 10%
Mexican-American.
3. MAIN OBJECTIVE
My 9th grade class will develop a knowledge for
the geography of the Americas and the European
countries, the timeline of the colonization leading
up to the European settlement of
Jamestown, VA, and the procedures that were
used to conquer the indigenous people of the
Americas. The students will gain this knowledge
by lectures using PowerPoint, videos, text book
reading, virtual technology, and geographical
material such as globes and maps. The students
will learn this in one week with 90% accuracy. At
the end of the week the students will be quizzed
on their knowledge of the material by breaking
into 4 teams of 5 players and playing a game
show style game.
4. DAY BY DAY BREAKDOWN
Monday- We will begin discussing the groups of indigenous
people the inhabited the Americas prior to the Age of Exploration.
We will also study the geography of the United States and
Europe by using Map provided in the classroom.
Tuesday- We will discuss the Age of Exploration and the
Columbian Exchange. We will also watch a video titled
Guns, Germs, and Steel to help further explain the impact that
advanced weaponry and exposure to disease had in helping
conquer the Americas.
Wednesday- We will transition from the settlements in Latin
America and the Caribbean to the settlements in North America.
We will begin class by watching a video about Jamestown. After
the video students will explore Jamestown using an interactive
tool on National Geographic’s website.
Thursday- We will prepare a study guide for the test that will be
given in class tomorrow.
Friday- The students will perform their quiz in a game show style
format. This will test their knowledge that they have gained of the
Colonization of the Americas and the Independence of the
United States.
5. Monday
A- I will be teaching a 9th grade American History class in a
public school system the process of colonization in the Americas
that led to the independence of the United States. There are 20
students in my class and they are predominately white. There
are 12 male students and 8 female students and the race ratio is
90% white and 10% Mexican-American.

S- Today’s lesson will be given in a lecture format using the
provided textbook and the white board.
U- I will utilize the material by having an open discussion about
the indigenous people of who lived in the Americas prior to the
Age of Exploration.
R- Learner participation will be required by having open floor
discussions and group reading.
E- Today’s lesson will be evaluated by an Q&A session at the
end of class
6. Tuesday
A- I will be teaching a 9th grade American History class in a public
school system the process of colonization in the Americas that led to the
independence of the United States. There are 20 students in my class

S- We will discuss the Age of Exploration and the Columbian Exchange.

S- We will begin class continuing off of Monday’s lecture and then we
will conclude class by watching the video Guns, Germs, and Steel.
U- I will utilize the given classroom materials along with youtube to
conduct today’s class.
R- I will require learner participation by having open floor discussions
along with watching the video
E- Today’s evaluation will be handled in tomorrows class because the
video will continue through the bell.
7. Wednesday
A-I will be teaching a 9th grade American History class in a public school
system the process of colonization in the Americas that led to the
independence of the United States. There are 20 students in my class
and they are predominately white. There are 12 male students and 8
female students and the race ratio is 90% white and 10% MexicanAmerican.
S- We will transition from the settlements in Latin America and the
Caribbean to the settlements in North America. We will begin class by
watching a video about Jamestown. After the video students will
explore Jamestown using an interactive tool on National Geographic's
website.
S- Today’s lesson will be conducted using the virtual exploration tools on
the website listed above and by watching a video.
U- I will utilize the given classroom material along with designated
classroom computers to accomplish today’s task.
R- I will require learner participation by allotting points for participation in
the virtual experience of Jamestown that we will access online.
E- I will evaluate both yesterday and today’s classes by having an open
floor discussion and having a Q&A session at the end of class.
8. Thursday
A-I will be teaching a 9th grade American History class in a public
school system the process of colonization in the Americas that
led to the independence of the United States. There are 20
students in my class and they are predominately white. There
are 12 male students and 8 female students and the race ratio is
90% white and 10% Mexican-American.
S- We will prepare a study guide for the test that will be given in
class tomorrow.
S- The materials that will be used for today’s lesson are the
materials that are provided in the classroom, such as the
whiteboard, paper, pencil, and textbook.
U- I will utilize the material in a lecture format so that the
students may create their own study guides to help them prepare
for the test.
R- I will require that each student participate by creating their
own study guide for the test. They will create the study guide
from the notes they take from the lectures.
E- I will evaluate today’s lesson with tomorrow’s test.
9. Friday
A- I will be teaching a 9th grade American History
class in a public school system the process of
colonization in the Americas that led to the
independence of the United States. There are 20
students in my class and they are predominately
white. There are 12 male students and 8 female
students and the race ratio is 90% white and 10%
Mexican-American.
S- The students will take a test to display their
knowledge of the criteria.
S- Today’s lesson will be conducted with a paper test
and a pencil.
U- I will utilize the typical classroom setting to
administer the test
E- I will evaluate the test by grading using a grading
scale of 100 points. I will use an EZ grader scale to
determine how much each question in worth.
