Social Media Marketing Strategies for NonprofitsCynthia Oliver
How well is your nonprofit telling its story? Social media marketing is one of the best ways for nonprofits to engage their members, tell their story, cultivate their donors and engage members, yet research shows that so many are not making this platform a priority. Why? After working as a nonprofit CEO and development for over 25 years I can tell you social media should, in fact must, become a priority. It's where your members are engaging in significant conversations every day. Social media is no longer a fad, its a fundamental shift in how we communicate.

Cultivating Zombies or Activating Community : Non-Profit Challenges Competing...Mila Araujo
Presented at Pod Camp East 2012, This is not the original slide deck. Over 25 slides have been added and some altered to include the discussion points (text) which occurred during the presentation.
Text is being included now so that those following online who did not have the benefit of the presentation and discussion can get a better idea of the context (which would be left out with only the original visual slides uploaded). This deck also doubles as "notes" for the presentation for those who were present.
Two versions of the Youtube video are also available. The first is the shorter version (30 seconds shown at the presentation) the second is the full story version, which gives a bit more of the background of what was actually discussed.
Non-Profits must use social media technology to deliver shorter more engaging and appealing bursts of information for greater impact, particularly effective with video (under 2 minutes) and photos.
Additional links have also been added to references which were mentioned during the presentation for participants reference and further research or learning. This was a 40 minute presentation.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

14. SOCIAL MEDIA – GOOD OR BAD ?
• EVERY ASPECT OF LIFE HAS ITS OWN PROS AND CONS AND SIMILARLY
SOCIAL MEDIA HAS IT TOO.LET’S START WITH THE DISADVANTAGES
FIRST, BECAUSE THE ADVANTAGES ARE NUMEROUS AND EVERYTHING IS
PERCEIVED TO HAVE A POSITIVE EFFECT UNLESS IT IS USED NEGATIVELY.
15. CYBER-BULLYING AS HYDRA
• LIKE HYDRA , CYBER-BULLYING IS RAPIDLY INCREASING DAY BY DAY. CYBERBULLYING
OR CYBERHARASSMENT IS A FORM OF HARASSMENT USING ELECTRONIC FORMS OF
CONTACT. IT HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY COMMON, ESPECIALLYAMONG
TEENAGERS.
• WITH WIDER ACCESS TO COMPUTERS AND OTHER DEVICES THAT CAN GO ONLINE, THE
POTENTIAL FOR CYBER BULLYING HAS GROWN. NO LONGER ARE BULLIES CONFINED
TO PICKING ON OTHERS ON THE SCHOOL PLAYGROUND. TODAY, MANY BULLIES ARE
REFRAINING FROM PHYSICAL BULLYING, OPTING INSTEAD BULLYING BY EMAIL,
SOCIAL MEDIAAND OTHER ONLINE MODES OF COMMUNICATION.
• ALTHOUGH CYBER BULLYING DOESN’T HAVE THE SAME, OBVIOUS SIGNS THAT
PHYSICAL BULLYING HAS, IT CAN BE JUST AS DAMAGING IN THE LONG TERM. HERE,
WE ARE COVERING CYBER BULLYING STATISTICS, AS WELLAS SOME INFORMATION
THAT MAY BE USEFUL TO YOU IF FRIEND OR COLLEAGUE IS A VICTIM OF CYBER
BULLYING.
16. STATISTICS
• 25 PER CENT OF TEENAGERS REPORT THAT THEY HAVE EXPERIENCED REPEATED BULLYING BY THEIR CELL PHONE
• 52 PER CENT OF YOUNG PEOPLE REPORT BEING CYBER BULLIED.
• 11 PER CENT OF ADOLESCENTS REPORT THAT EMBARRASSING PHOTOGRAPHS HAVE BEEN TAKEN OF THEM WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT.
• OF THE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO REPORTED CYBER BULLYING INCIDENTS AGAINST THEM, A THIRD REPORTED THAT THEIR BULLIES USED ONLINE THREATS AND 10 PER CENT
OF ALL MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE BEEN ON THE RECEIVING HATE TERMS.
• 55 PER CENT OF ALL TEENS THAT USE SOCIAL MEDIA HAVE WITNESSED OUTRIGHT BULLYING ONLINE.
• 95 PER CENT OF TEENS THAT WITNESSED BULLYING ON SOCIAL MEDIA REPORT THAT OTHERS, LIKE THEM, HAVE IGNORED THE BEHAVIOUR.
• ONLY ONE OUT OF EVERY SIX PARENTS OF ADOLESCENTS ARE EVEN AWARE OF THE SCOPE AND INTENSITY OF CYBER BULLYING TODAY.
• MORE THAN 80 PER CENT OF TEENS REGULARLY USE CELL PHONES; A COMMON MEDIUM FOR CYBER BULLYING.
• THE MOST COMMON TYPES OF CYBER BULLYING TACTICS REPORTED ARE MEAN, HURTFUL COMMENTS, AS WELL AS THE SPREADING OF RUMOURS.
• VICTIMS OF CYBER BULLYING ARE MORE LIKELY TO SUFFER FROM LOW SELF-ESTEEM AND TO CONSIDER SUICIDE.
17.
18. PREVENTIONS
IT IS SAID THAT PREVENTIONS ARE ALWAYS BETTER THAN CURE. SO HERE ARE SOME STEPS THAT
WILL HELP YOU OVERCOME CYBER-BULLYING.
• KNOW THAT IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT
• DO NOT RESPOND OR RETALIATE
• SAVE THE EVIDENCE
• TELL THE PERSON TO STOP
• REACH OUT FOR HELP
• USE AVAILABLE TECH TOOLS
• PROTECT YOUR ACCOUNTS.
• IF SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS BEING BULLIED, TAKE ACTION
19. OTHER DISADVANTAGES OF SOCIAL MEDIA
•HACKING– PERSONAL DATA AND PRIVACY CAN EASILY BE HACKED AND SHARED ON THE INTERNET.
•ADDICTION – THE ADDICTIVE PART OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA IS VERY BAD AND CAN DISTURB
PERSONAL LIVES AS WELL. THE TEENAGERS ARE THE MOST AFFECTED BY THE ADDICTION OF THE SOCIAL
MEDIA.
•SECURITYISSUES– NOW A DAY’S SECURITY AGENCIES HAVE ACCESS TO PEOPLE PERSONAL
ACCOUNTS. WHICH MAKES THE PRIVACY ALMOST COMPROMISED. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU ARE
VISITED BY ANY INVESTIGATION OFFICER REGARDING ANY ISSUE THAT YOU MISTAKENLY OR
UNKNOWINGLY DISCUSSED OVER THE INTERNET.
20. •REPUTATION– SOCIAL MEDIA CAN EASILY RUIN SOMEONE’S REPUTATION JUST BY CREATING A
FALSE STORY AND SPREADING ACROSS THE SOCIAL MEDIA.
•HEALTHISSUES– THE EXCESS USAGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA CAN ALSO HAVE A NEGATIVE IMPACT
ON THE HEALTH.
• GLAMORIZESDRUGSANDALCOHOL– ONE OF THE DISADVANTAGES OF THE
SOCIAL MEDIA IS THAT PEOPLE START TO FOLLOW OTHERS WHO ARE WEALTHY OR DRUG ADDICTED AND
SHARE THEIR VIEWS AND VIDEOS ON THE WEB
21. ADVANTAGES OF SOCIAL MEDIA
•CONNECTIVITY – THE FIRST AND MAIN ADVANTAGE OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA IS CONNECTIVITY. PEOPLE FROM
ANYWHERE CAN CONNECT WITH ANYONE. REGARDLESS OF THE LOCATION AND RELIGION.
•EDUCATION– SOCIAL MEDIA HAS A LOT OF BENEFITS FOR THE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS. IT IS VERY EASY
TO EDUCATE FROM OTHERS WHO ARE EXPERTS AND PROFESSIONALS VIA THE SOCIAL MEDIA. YOU CAN FOLLOW
ANYONE TO LEARN FROM HIM/HER AND ENHANCE YOUR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ANY FIELD.
•HELP– YOU CAN SHARE YOUR ISSUES WITH THE COMMUNITY TO GET HELP AND GIDDINESS. WHETHER IT IS
HELPING IN TERM OF MONEY OR IN TERM OF ADVICE, YOU CAN GET IT FROM THE COMMUNITY YOU ARE
CONNECTED WITH.
•NOBLE CAUSE – SOCIAL MEDIA CAN ALSO BE USED FOR THE NOBLE CAUSES. FOR EXAMPLE, TO PROMOTE AN
NGO, SOCIAL WELFARE ACTIVITIES AND DONATIONS FOR THE NEEDY PEOPLE.
22. •INFORMATION AND UPDATES – THE MAIN ADVANTAGE OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA IS THAT YOU UPDATE
YOURSELF FROM THE LATEST HAPPENINGS AROUND IN THE WORLD. MOST OF THE TIME, TELEVISION AND PRINT
MEDIA THESE DAYS ARE BIASED AND DOES NOT CONVEY THE TRUE MESSAGE.
•PROMOTION– WHETHER YOU HAVE AN OFFLINE BUSINESS OR ONLINE, YOU CAN PROMOTE YOUR
BUSINESS TO THE LARGEST AUDIENCE. THE WHOLE WORLD IS OPEN FOR YOU, AND THIS MAKES THE
BUSINESSES PROFITABLE AND LESS EXPENSIVE.
•AWARENESS– SOCIAL MEDIA ALSO CREATE AWARENESS AND INNOVATE THE WAY PEOPLE LIVE.
•HELPS GOVT AND AGENCIES FIGHT CRIME- ONE OF THE ADVANTAGES OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA
THAT IT HELPS GOVERNMENTS AND SECURITY AGENCIES TO SPY AND CATCH CRIMINALS TO FIGHT CRIME.
•HELPS IN BUILDING COMMUNITIES-OUR WORLD HAS DIFFERENT RELIGIONS AND BELIEFS. SOCIAL
MEDIA HELPS IN BUILDING AND PARTICIPATING IN THE COMMUNITY OF OWN RELIGION.
