Ethylene (C2H4) is a gaseous plant hormone that regulates many physiological processes in plants. It is produced in wounded, senescing, or ripening plant tissues and is transported via diffusion. Ethylene binds to receptor proteins which then trigger a variety of molecular responses. These include stimulating the production of enzymes involved in fruit ripening that cause softening, sweetening, and color changes. Physiological activities of ethylene include promoting fruit ripening, accelerating leaf and flower abscission, inducing stem epinasty in tomatoes, disrupting photomorphogenesis and geotropism, and stimulating flowering in some plants.
