Medicinal plants are nutrient demanding plants for normal growth and to produce higher yield. The aim of this review is to assess and indicate the role of plant nutrients both organic and inorganic in some medicinal plants. Inorganic and/or organic fertilizers are needed to meet inadequate soil nutrients and the declining of soil fertility as a result of continuous cultivation. Maintaining soil organic matter concentration above the threshold level is critical for improving soil quality. A careful combination of organic and inorganic fertilizers is widely recognized strategy of integrated nutrient management to sustain agronomic productivity and improve soil fertility. The effects of organic fertilization and combined use of chemical and organic fertilizer on crop growth and soil fertility depend on the application rates and the nature of fertilizers used. On the other hand, inorganic fertilizers are crucial to increase the yield of medicinal plants like roselle within a short period of time. On the other hand, inorganic fertilizers are crucial to increase the yield of medicinal plants like roselle within a short period of time. INTEGRATED NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT Integrated Nutrient Management refers to the maintenance of soil fertility and of plant nutrient supply at an optimum level for sustaining the desired productivity through optimization of the benefits from all possible sources of organic, inorganic and biological components in an integrated manner.
- 3. CONCEPTS Regulated nutrient supply for optimum crop growth and higher productivity. Improvement and maintenance of soil fertility. Zero adverse impact on agro – ecosystem quality by balanced fertilization of organic manures, inorganic fertilizers and bio- inoculant
- 4. IMPORTANCE OF INTEGRATED NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT The recent energy crisis, high fertilizer cost and low purchasing power of the farming community have made it necessary to rethink alternatives. Unlike chemical fertilizer, organic manure and bio fertilizer available locally at cheaper rates. They enhance crop yield per unit of applied nutrients by providing a better physical, chemical and microbial environment. This ultimately improves crop yield. The available quantity of animal excreta and crop residues cannotmeet the country’s requirements for crop production. Therefore, maximizing the usage of organic waste and combining it with chemical fertilizers and bio fertilizers in the form of integrated manure appears to be the best alternative.

- 6. ADVANTAGES Enhances the availability of applied as well as native soil nutrients Synchronizes the nutrient demand of the crop with nutrient supply from native and applied sources. Provides balanced nutrition to crops and minimizes the antagonistic effects resulting from hidden deficiencies and nutrient imbalance. Improves and sustains the physical, chemical and biological functioning of soil. Minimizes the deterioration of soil, water and ecosystem by promoting carbon sequestration, reducing nutrient losses to ground and surface water bodies and to atmosphere
- 7. COMPONENTS: Soil Source: Mobilizing unavailable nutrients and to use appropriate crop varieties, cultural practices and cropping system. Mineral Fertilizer : Super granules, coated urea, direct use of locally available rock PO4 in acid soils, Single Super Phosphate (SSP), MOP and micronutrient fertilizers. Organic Sources : By products of farming and allied industries. FYM, droppings, crop waste, residues, sewage, sludge, industrial waste. Biological Sources : Microbial inoculants substitute 15 - 40 Kg N/ha
