Essay on Suzanne Britts Sloppy People vs Neat People
Neat People vs. Sloppy People appears in Britt s collection show and tell. Mingling humor with
seriousness (as she often does), Britt has called the book a report on her journey into the awful
cave of self: You shout your name and voices come back in exultant response, telling you their
names. In this essay about curtain inescapable personality traits, you may recognize some aspects
of your own self, awful or otherwise. For a different approach to a similar subject, see the next
essay, by Dave Barry.
I ve finally figured out the difference between neat people and sloppy people. The distinction is, as
always, moral. Neat people are lazier and meaner than sloppy people. Sloppy people, you see, are
not really sloppy. Their... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sloppy people can t bear to part with anything. They give loving attention to every detail. When
sloppy people say they re going to tackle the surface of the desk, they really mean it. Not a paper
will go unturned; not a rubber band will go unboxed. Four hours or two weeks into the excavation,
the desk looks exactly the same, primarily because the sloppy person is meticulously creating new
piles of paper with new headings and scrupulously stopping to read all the old book catalogs
before he threw them away. A neat person would just bulldoze the desk. Neat people are bums
and clods at heart. They have cavalier attitude toward possession, including the family heirlooms.
Everything is just another dust catcher to them. If anything collects dust, it s got to go and that s
that. Neat people will toy with the idea of throwing the children out of the house just to cut down
on the clutter. Neat people don t care about process. They like results. What they want to do is get
the whole thing over with so they can sit down and watch the rasslin on TV. Neat people operate
on two unvarying principles: Never handle any items twice, and throw everything away. The only
thing messy in a neat persons house is the thrash can. The minute something comes to a neat person
hand, he will look at it, try to decide if it has immediate use and, finding none, throw it in the trash.
Neat people especially

Human s Selfishness vs. Sympathy in The Very Old Man with...
The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, by Gabriel MГЎrquez, is related to the classical theme
of human s selfishness verses sympathy. However, MГЎrquez uses narrative elements such as plot,
setting, and different characters, to provide much more in depth sources of evidence to support his
theme.
In The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, MГ
Ўrquez uses an Old Man who is supposed to be an
angel to display human s tendencies to show both brutality and/or grace depending on the
situation. The bizarre, tattered looking man with wings is found in a town to see a little boy who
is sick. After the boy s health improves the parents of the boy, Pelayo and Elisenda, decide to let
the Old Man reside in their chicken coop outside their home because they ... Show more content on

Father Gonzaga, the town priest, and an old woman who supposedly has knowledge about
angels do not know what to do with the Old Man, and have to contacts Father Gonzaga s
superior for help. Even after the angel helps the family and performs different miracles for
others, the villagers respond by caging and making a spectacle of him. ...they burned his side
with an iron for branding steers, for he had been motionless for so many hours... (272). You
would think that if another person were helping someone, let alone an angel who is supposed to
be admired, they would act a little more grateful and show their appreciation. Using a religious
setting emphasizes how the villagers should have acted towards the Old Man but was able to turn
a blind eye from their morals to receive what they want.
MГЎrquez uses The Old Man character, or angel, to show how someone is perceived differently
from who he or she truly is. Determining other peoples actions towards them, whether they are
harsh or kind. When reading A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, we are never positive as to
whether the Old Man is actually an angel. However, the Old Man carries out miracles for others
and has mysterious wings causing the reader to assume so. The Old Man does not fit the
traditional way the citizens would view a heavenly angel and is considered more freakily than
heavenly. His huge buzzard wings, dirty and

Basketball Vs Football Vs Basketball
Track Field vs Football, Baseball Basketball Sports are one of the most popular extracurricular
activities among high school students and even adults that choose to professionalize their sport.
Each sport has its share of disadvantages that all help in contributing to one particular sport truly
being the best to take part in. Track and field is easily the best sport for anyone to choose to
participate in. Track and field is a sport in which various competitive athletic events take place that
establish the skills of running, sprinting, jumping and throwing on a running track and an
adjacent field. Track and Field favors a wide range of body types, has a lightweight uniform and
is the safest in contrast to football, baseball and basketball, which makes it the most idealistic of
the sports. Track and field is a sport most well known for its teamwork. The sport s teamwork is
emphasized and strengthened through its diversity. Track is abundant in diversity due to the fact
that there is a variety of events to participate in as opposed to playing the same game as everybody
else like in football, baseball and basketball. For example, the object of football is to get the ballto
the other end; the object of baseball is to run around a diamond before someones throws a ball
home. Lastly, the main concept of basketball, much like football, is to dribble the ball to the other
end of the court. Track and field is also much safer than football, baseball and track. There is little

Instructional Design Models And Learning Theories Are Used...
Sink, D (2008), claims that Instructional Design Models and Learning Theories are used after the
needs of an organization have been identified (Sink, D. 2008). Instructional Systems Design
Models provide designers effective ways to identify solutions to support the needs of an
organization. This paper will discuss the characteristics of the Experiential LearningModel,
Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction Model, and the Gerlach and Ely Models along with
providing a comparison and contrast of these models.
Characteristics of ELM, ARCS, and Gerlach and Ely Models
Experiential Learning Model (ELM): Based on early work from John Dewey, Kurt Lewin, and Jean
Piaget, ELM was developed in 1974 by David A. Kolb and Ron Fry in 1974. This model emphasizes
the idea that learning occurs when the student takes interest in the subject matter and engages in
self initiated learning. Learning is an on going process that is based on experience, interactions with
the environment, and involves obtaining knowledge through social interactions. The ELM is
composed of four elements: Concrete experience, observation and reflection, Forming abstract
concepts, and testing in new situations and five steps which consist of: Experience, Share, Process,
Generalize, and Apply (Moore, Eric T. 2013).
Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction (ARCS) Model: The model was developed by
John Keller in 1979 who believed that motivation of students had direct correlation to their ability to

concept that EA is more than a physical model filled with processes and technologies but also
includes the people and attitudes toward business held by that individual.
This information is easier to digest than the concept of EA components. However, the concepts are
still important to the process and the chapter provides models for organizations as well as roles
contained with a given enterprise, which helps determine the acceptance and success of an EA

Summary Of Wars By Tacitus
This book written by Tacitus is significant in multiple ways as one of the first documented points
of history of this time period. In the first part of the book, it highlights the life of commander
Agricola, one the greatest commanders who ruled over Britain. Being his son in law, Tacitus uses
his personal experience and the stories that Agricola had told him portraying his rise to leadership in
Britain. Although knowing little about leadership and war, Tacitushad the best account of Agricola
s life in all aspects. He talks about Agricola s early life from his military training, his years in the
military that promoted through the ranks upto commander, then his battles against the rebels forces
of Britain at the time. At his old age he recalls

William Shakespeare s Globe Theatre Essay
Shakespeare s Globe Theatre
The Globe Theater, an entertainment outlet for all people of that time, provided a place for
Shakespeare s plays to be performed. It was the third and most famous playhouse in London. When
it was built, it was one of the most important playhouses in London. The Globe s architecture was
intriguing for its time and its life was long and prosperous.
The Globe was built by two brothers, Cuthbert and Richard Burbage. They had inherited the Globe
s predecessor, The Theatre, from their father, James Burbage (Williams 365). Fearing their lease
would run out, the brothers dismantled it and carried the materials to Bankside, where the Swan
and Rose already stood (Britanica). It was built ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Until 1600, no more than two companies had been licensed at any one time to perform daily
within the reach of London. Half the shares were kept by the Burbages, the rest going to the
Chamberlain s Men which Shakespeare was a member (Britanica). Each of the sixteen
shareholders of the globe made about 25 pounds (Williams 365). When James came to the throne
in 1603, he favored the Globe, bringing it success (Andrews 167). One night before a planned
revolt, The Chamberlain s company was asked to perform Richard II in order to instill mutinous
thoughts in the audience. (Westerhof)
The admission to the Globe was one shilling to the boxes. Lee stated that the general admission
was one penny, and a stool on the stage was sixpence. Posters, or bills, were placed throughout
London on rails and posts. John Northbrooke said in 1579, They used to set up their bills upon
posts some certain days before to admonish people to make resort to their theatres. The Globe was
thought to have gotten its name from the sign representing Hercules or Atlas carrying the globe
with the motto, All the World s a Stage. (Williams 365)
In 1613, the Globe burnt down accidentally during a performance of Henry VIII (Miller Schutz
21). It was set on fire by a cannon set off to mark the King s entrance onstage in a scene at
Cardinal Woshey s Palace. The entire theatre was destroyed in one hour (Britanica). It was rebuilt

The Influences of Oscar Wilde The Picture of Dorian Gray
The Influences of Oscar Wilde
Throughout his life Oscar Wilde had many strong influences exerted upon him. During his early
childhood his mother influenced him and into college some of his professors and certain
philosophers left a substantial impression upon him. Into adulthood these influences leaked out in
his writing. These influences gave him ample ideas for writing The Picture of Dorian Gray. Wilde
s study of the Hellenistic ideals of Epicurus, his coddled lifestyle as a child and his devotion to the
movement of Aesthetics and Moral Ambiguity have produced one of the most astounding works of
horror fiction.
Oscar Wilde more effeminate attitude toward life and the way he looked at beauty can be attributed
to his mother, Speranza. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But the most important influence at Oxford was Walter Pater, Fellow at Brasenose College and
the writer of the sensational Studies in the History of the Renaissance (1873). Pater S skepticism
and the belief that followed, that the study of one s private experience is more fruitful than the
study of a chaotic external world, represented an exciting contrast to conventional social and
moral wisdom. For a sensitive young undergraduate like Wilde to learn that the aim of life is to
cultivate the deepest response to what is beautiful profound, or curious is to place in front of him
an irresistibly attractive way of life. (Ericksen 17) This indicates that Pater was a direct influence
on Wildes insatiable love for beauty which spilled over into The Picture of Dorian Gray.
During his college years Wilde also came across the teaching of Epicurus, a Greek philosopher
who lived from 342 270 B.C.E. and taught that pleasure was the highest good. He was active
during the Hellenistic period and had a defining influence on those defined as Aesthetes and
Decadents, particularly Walter Pater and his occasional disciple Oscar Wilde. (Terpening 1) The
Victorian aesthetes, such as Wilde and Pater concerned themselves with sense perception,
wholeness, and the soul. It was the belief of Wilde that the exterior beauty of a man conceals inner
moral decrepitude to those who do not contemplate in earnest . . . Dorian Gray s

The Human Immune System Of Multiple Structures
The human immune system consists of multiple structures. These structures include the following:
tonsils and adenoids, thymus, lymph nodes, spleen, appendix, lymphatic vessels, and bone marrow.
HIV involves many structures/components of the immune system, so it is important to understand
the structures and function of each involved component. Calles, Evans, and Terlonge (2010) clearly
explain the parts of the immune systemaffected by HIV.
To begin the immune system uses antigens to help fight against infection by working with
antibodies to produce an immune response (Calles, Evans, Terlonge, 2010). Furthermore, the
immune system produces lymphocytes (i.e. also known as white blood cells). There are two types
of lymphocytes produced, B cells and T cells. B cells remain in bone marrow (i.e. where B and T
cells are made) and T cells move to the thymus (Calles, Evans, Terlonge, 2010). After their
migration, T cells finish cell development, become immunocompetent, replicate, and differentiate.
There are two important functions of T cells, which include maintenance of the immune system
and destroying cells with certain antigens. There are distinct T cells which are identified by
surface markers (Calles, Evans, Terlonge, 2010). Concerning HIV, CD4+ are impacted the most.
These cells are responsible for triggering B cells and macrophages when an antigen is present
(Calles, Evans, Terlonge, 2010). Furthermore, T cells discharge cytokines, which are involved in

Aronofsky has cited Serling as one of his influences for his own film work, specifically stating that
two of his favorite episodes of The Twilight Zonewere Eye of the Beholder and Back There (Carli,
1998). Eye of the Beholder is a shocking morality lesson about the perception of beauty (Presnell
McGee, 1998, p. 19). In this paper I will discuss what parts of Aronofsky s films appear to be
taking influence from Serling and why they take influence from The Twilight Zone. Serling and
Aronofsky have left their mark on the industry and part of the reason they have both done so is
because of The Twilight Zone.
Darren Aronofsky s Pi
Aronofsky s first feature film was the work Pi. The film follows Max Cohen, who is a genius
mathematician. Pi is based around Max s search for a secret 216 digit number that is sought
after by several different groups. One of the two main groups that are after Max s work is a
group of agents from Wall Street who want the number in order to help them solve the stock
market so that they can be rich. The other group is a group of Jews who want the number because
they believe it is their path to god. The movie shows Max s struggles with his own genius and with
the groups that are after his genius ability.

The Day When Christ Will Return
June 14, 2015 FCBC Sermon #1504
Matthew 24:36 44 ONLY THE FATHER KNOWS The Day When Christ Will Return.
My grand kids are getting to the point where they love to play hide and seek. But they really don
t play it well. First, there is the issue of counting. It is difficult to be patient enough to count to
ten and there is the problem that if you don t know 2,3,4,5,6 go in the middle you get to ten
really fast. And it s so fun to say Ready or Not, Here I Come they want to just skip to that part.
Then there is the ongoing problem of where to hide which basically requires an understanding of
the issue of hiding. Curling up on the couch or the bed is not hiding, nor is standing behind the

Jesus is still answering the disciples questions asked in Matthew 24:3 As he sat on the Mount of
Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, Tell us, when will these things be, and what
will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age? (Matthew 24:3, ESV) The setting is the
Mount of Olives. The lessons are called the Olivet Discourse. The longest answer Jesus gave to any
line of questioning.
The first part of their question: When will these things be? relates to the destruction of
Jerusalem and the temple and is graphically described in verses 15 28. The second part of their
question relates to knowing the sign of Christ s coming and we looked at that last week in verses
29 35. And regarding the question of the end of the age, the disciples are told they cannot know
when the end of the age is in verse 36. Only the Father knows.
Which brings a question to our minds? Does Jesus know now? John MacArthur says: Although
He was fully God as well as fully man (John 1:1, 14), Christ voluntarily restricted His use of
certain divine attributes when He became flesh. Who though he was in the form of God, did not

Atlit Yam Essay
Atlit Yam in Israel
Atlit Yam is a typical Neolithic site submerged in the Mediterranean Sea, near the coast of Haifa,
Israel (Holloway, 2014). This ancient village, aging 9,000 years old, started to be excavated in
1990s (Marchant, 2009). There have been numerous remains discovered by archaeologists,
including a large amount of houses and walls, a water well surrounded by stone baluster, a large
number of human remains and plenty of artefacts made by stone, wood and bone (Holloway,
2014). One of the most exciting discoveries is some skeletons of women and children, which have
been confirmed to be the earliest known cases of tuberculosis (Marchant, 2009). This settlement
provides an excellent chance to study life in the Neolithic Age.
Reasons of the subsidence of Atlit Yam are complicated. Basically, the erosion of saltwater, the
tectonic effects and eustatic effects may all make contribution to the submergence of the village.
With the erosion of saltwater, the well in Atlit Yam was contaminated badly so that the village
was abandoned by its people, not long before it was covered by sand and water (Marchant, 2009).

contains a larger number of material valuable to be studied (Marchant, 2009). Unlike some
submerged settlements which are lack of planning and contracture, Pavlopetri has already

I was walking towards the park my father always took me to do my project when I was little, Let

I tried to see where it was coming from, as I looked across the green grass wondering if it was my
imagination or not. The grass had been recently mowed and the trees had animals on them as if the
whole city was perfect. I heard it again, Please let me go!
I decided to put my textbooks and the designing journal down on the bench. In the city we live
in, there is no crime so nobody would steal my stuff. I tried to hear where the scream came from.
As I walked around the whole park, the sound grew fainter. I found where the sound was coming
from. I hid behind a big, green, and growing tree. She looked tired but strong. The guards didn t

Similarities And Differences Between Ancient Egypt And...
Midterm Essay Maureen Cairns
In comparing and contrasting the societies of Periclean Athens and ancient Egypt, we must first
mention some of the characteristics of an actual society: a society has social levels and classes, a
governmental system, and a developed culture. Both the societies of ancient Athens and Egypt fit
into these parameters. In this essay we will explore social classes, gender relations, social
inequality, and hierarchy as they apply to these societies. Both ancient Athens and Egypt
adhered to a strict hierarchical framework, ranking people as superiors or inferiors. Old
Kingdom Egyptian hierarchy is described as having the king and queen at the top, with priests,
administrators, governors and army commanders coming second, then the commoners who
worked mostly in agriculture, and finally, slaves, who had been captured in war. (Hunt, pg. 22).
According to Esolen, (pg. 35), Egyptian society was structured as such: the Pharaoh came first,
and was believed to be God on earth. Next came the Vizier , who was the pharaohs chief advisor.
Nobles were next in the hierarchy, responsible for making local laws. Priests followed, and were
responsible for performing rituals and ceremonies. Scribes were a very important group, as they
were the only ones who could read or write, so they were the record keepers. A small percentage
of boys from good families were trained for this particular job, starting at the age of five.
Soldiers came next, and were responsible for the defense of the country. Craftsmen were skilled
workers (weavers, tailors, jewelry makers), farmers worked the land, and at the very bottom were
slaves, who were usually prisoners captured in war.
In Periclean Athens, all adult male citizens had political and judicial power, even the poor. The
upper class didn t agree with this, as they believed the poor lacked the education to make political
decisions. Under Pericles, citizens could only be those whose mother and father were Athenian by
birth, and because of this, a great many had their citizenship revoked. (Hunt, pg. 85). As mentioned
in Hunt (pg. 90), women, slaves, and metics (foreigners granted permanent residency in exchange
for military service) made up a majority of

Heartbreak Research Paper
Heartbreak can physically and emotionally hurt someone. I believe 100 percent that a broken heart
and emotional pain can negatively affect physical health, says Courtney Nesbitt, L.C.S.W.
Research has shown that when someone has been through a breakup they have similar brain
activity as when they are shown a picture of a loved one. Researchers concluded that rejection,
emotional and physical pain are all processed in the same places of the brain. When both the
parasympathetic system (part of the nervous system) and the sympathetic nervous system are both
turned on, you can experience chest pains and discomfort, says Meghan Laslocky.
There can be some positive effects of heartbreak like strength stems from resilience, which is

Juxtaposition In Devil In The White City
The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson is a nonfiction novel that sets during the building of
the 1893 Chicago World s Fair, known as The World s Columbian Exposition as well. The novel
describes the process of building the fair and the architect who builds it to the evil murderer who
exploits the fair to lure in his victims. Erik Larson uses rhetorical strategies such as selective
connotationand word choice, imagery, and juxtaposition, to contrast the white cityfrom the black
city. Contrary to the white city which was the exposition, the black city, the rest of Chicago, brought
negativity and hatred to the people.
In it was a blighted, hellish place full of noise and dust and smoke and inhuman towers that blocked
the sun and she hated it hated especially this gloomy building and the ceaseless clamor of
construction (Larson 123), the black city is described through selective connotation and word
choice. Larson creating an unpleasant mood by using such negative and degrading words such as
blighted, hellish, and inhuman to describe Chicago, readers can envision a hateful and dull place.
By placing and in front of the negative words: blighted, hellish, and inhuman and repeating and
multiple times, the list of unappealing attributes of the city is elongated. Essentially, Chicago is
envisioned in a worse way than if the negative adjectives were just listed one after another without
the effect that and carries, emphasizing the hatred the character held towards

the physiological responses common to most sports injuries
Damaged Tissue
The body will respond to an exercise stress in one of three ways and there may be primary and
secondary damage to the tissues as a result of exercise stress. The three responses the body will
take to an exercise stress are, the tissues may adapt to the stress and no damage occurs, the tissues
may become injured, or the tissues will die. In athletics, athletes often stress their bodies to the
point of tissue injury and tissue death. The body s primary reaction to an injury is tissue
destruction. The degree of tissue destruction will greatly depend on the injurious force. Secondary
damage may occur from cell death. Cell death occurs because of the hypoxia associated with the

A sprain typically occurs when people fall and land on an outstretched arm, slide into base, land on
the side of their foot, or twist a knee with the foot planted firmly on the ground. This can result in
an over stretch or tear of the ligaments supporting that joint. Common type of sprains would be in
the ankle and in the wrist. The ankle is one of the most common injuries in professional and
recreational sports and activities. Most ankle sprains happen when the foot abruptly turns inward or
outward as an athlete runs, turns, falls, or lands after a jump. One or more of the lateral ligaments
can be injured if this occurs. Wrists are often sprained after a fall in which the athlete lands on an
outstretched hand.
The usual signs and symptoms of a muscle sprain include pain, swelling, bruising, and the loss of
functional ability. Sometimes people feel a pop or tear when the injury happens. However, these
signs and symptoms can vary in intensity, depending on the severity of the sprain.
1st Degree Sprain: A 1st Degree sprain causes overstretching or slight tearing of the ligaments with
no joint instability. A person with a mild sprain usually experiences minimal pain, swelling, and
little or no loss of functional ability. Bruising is absent or slight, and the person is usually able to
put weight on the affected joint. 2nd Degree Sprain: A 2nd Degree sprain causes partial tearing of
the ligament and is characterized by bruising, moderate pain,

Roles Of The Puritan Society
Roles of the Puritan Society Puritans were English Protestants who were committed to purifying the
Church of England. After being religiously persecuted in England, the Puritans fled to North
America to start their new beginning. The Puritans maintained their Protestant beliefs with a

The Negative Analysis Of Uber Technologies
Presently, many companies are seemingly willing to practice corporate political activism. Uber
Technologies Former CEO Travis Kalanick had been very vocal about his political positions.
Unfortunately, the support faced harsh criticism from Uber s customer base over the support of
President Trump and his political decisions. Kalanick, as well as other technology CEO s, joined
Donald Trumps business advisory council as a way for their company to have a relationship with
the Republican Party as well as with the White House.
However, Kalanick defended his decision to show support for Donald Trump as well as ignoring
the taxi strike in saying, We ll partner with anyone in the world as long as they re about making
transportation in cities better, creating job opportunities, making it easier to get around, getting
pollution out of the air and traffic off the streets (Fiegerman, 2017). Many did not respect the
decision to ignore the taxi strike as customers believed that Uber should have shown their support.
Kalanick s decision to cross picket lines caused customers to protest by chaining themselves to the
main entrance of their office building. The internal and external pressures resulting from Kalanick s
decisions led to his resignation from the business advisory council, explaining that, joining the
group was not meant to be an endorsement of the President or his agenda but unfortunately it has
been misinterpreted to be exactly that (Romm, 2017). Since Uber is not

Natural Grass Is Better Than Artificial Turfs

you feel when you sprint on it, to the way it looks, but there are consequently many downsides of
having artificial turf, and plus sides of having natural grass. Having natural grass is excellent
because it s cheap, environmentally friendly, and helps with many other things. While artificial turf
looks amazing, and it s easy to run on, natural grassfeels better, and is more skin friendly. Here are
just a few of the many similarities and differences natural grass and artificial turf have. With
natural grass, the cost is drastically less. While installing artificial turf costs as much as 900,000
dollars, the price of natural grass is about 53,000 dollars. The price of the two fields is so
dramatically different, that it is worth the money to stay with a natural field. With all the extra
money, the infinite possibilities of upgrades on your field are incredible, from new equipment to
keeping your grass clean, mowed, and green. Although natural grass is quite cheap, you must

History of Organizational Communication
(This entire page contains gender bias language, i.e. he, him, his, etc. Please edit)
The field traces its lineage through business information, business communication, and early mass
communication studies published in the 1930s through the 1950s. Until then, organizational
communication as a discipline consisted of a few professors within speech departments who had a
particular interest in speaking and writing in business settings. The current field is well established
with its own theories and empirical concerns distinct from other communication subfields and other

Importance of written communication:
Communication may be made through oral or written. In oral communication, listeners can make
out what speakers is trying to say, but in written communication, text matter in the message is a
reflection of your thinking. So, written communication or message should be clear, purposeful and
concise with correct words, to avoid any misinterpretation of your message. Written
communications provides a permanent record for future use and it also gives an opportunity to
employees to put up their comments or suggestions in writing.
COMMUNICATION IN AN ORGANIZATION
Humans communicate all the time, and most of the time we do it as a matter of course, without
thinking about it. We can define it in the following way:
пѓ Communication is one of the basic functions of management in any organization and its
importance can hardly be overemphasized. It is a process of transmitting information, ideas,
thoughts, opinions and plans between various parts of an organization.
пѓ Communication is the process of conveying information from a sender to a receiver with the
use of a medium in which the communicated information is understood the same way by both
sender and receiver. Communication is important in an organization because it creates mutual

The Sickle Of Sickle Cell Disease
Sickle cell disease was discovered in 1910 in the United States. Many cases came to surface after
that, and it was clear that sickle cell disease is predominantly common in the African American
ethnicity. Sickle cell disease is caused by a mutation in the hemoglobin of red blood cells. The
most common, known sickle cell disease is sickle cell anemia. There is no cure for Sickle cell
disease, but there was a treatment that help relieve pain, prevent infections, and prevent organ
damage. A drug called Hydroxyurea could be used to increase the production of fetal hemoglobin
during pregnancy. Bone marrowtreatment, is when stem cells are removed from one person to
another person. Cord blood with stem cell transplantation, can replace someone s abnormal stem
cells with a donors stem cell.
Symptoms
Signs that show when sickle cell is present is when anemia starts to show in the blood cells and
they become weak to where it breaks apart, periods of pain where the blood is unable to flow to
the vessels which causes joint pain, and recurrent infections because sickle cell can damage organs
that help fight off infections. Sickle cell was a trait that was inherited by one or both parents. The
shape of a normal red blood cell is a disc shape that looked like a doughnut, whereas a sickle cell
has a crescent shape. An individual that inherited the defective gene from both parents had the
sickle cell gene and is homozygous. If left untreated, usually the person would die in their

According to the research depression is an outcome of family, cultural, personal and social
circumstances. The main causes of depression are the stress factors such as bereavement, abuse,
the stress of divorce and sexual infidelity. Other kinds of stressors like isolation and ageing, health
problems, stigma, cultural distance are the major difficulties faced by the people. The finding
demonstrates the nature of an individual of understanding depression and different management
strategies used in the primary care of the patients. The encouragement of the self help in the step
care models is recommended in the NICE guidelines of UK which may require more than blanket
application of self management tools and more systematic extracting of strategies which enable an
individual to develop on their existing strengths and moving towards the recovery more effectively.
The finding also reveals the depth of traumatic and violent experiences suffered by the women due
to depression. Many women link their depressions with the heavy loss such as ill health,
bereavement or job related events. The approach of chronic disease management is becoming a
widespread practice of controlling depressive disorders of how the patients respond to the approach

as a consequence of race for the limited water and pasture in Marsabit area of Kenya (East

has been a major problem. Over the past months in the cause of the year, series of cattle rustling

Applying Different Analytical Approaches For Films Dog...
Applying different analytical approaches to films
Dog soldiers
Critical approaches:
The sound used in dog soldiers was very dramatic and is non diegetic. The editing was fast paced
and added dramatic tension to the setting of the film; the setting was quite dark throughout the
film and as it was set in an isolated house in a forest this also helped to add to the dramatic effect.
In terms of cinematography, there was a large amount of point of view shots and certain points of
the film were in black and white. Accelerated hot reverse shot shows energy of conversation and
can see the characters emotion and reactions. Zoom into window towards woman, slow motion fire
chasing the car and explosion. Camerawork medium shots, close ups, handheld camera views,
over the shoulder and pan of men around the table. The technical elements identified to help find
out what the genre of the film would be, the fact that it includes a lot of violence, blood and
intense scenes would lead most audiences to believe it was a thriller or horror type film. Another
convention is that is evident in dog soldiers is fantasy; this is because it includes werewolves, who
are not proven to be real, there are also some elements of comedy.
Fire light gave a very gloomy/dangerous environment, around Ryan soldiers appeared tired/sweaty

Increase In Popularity And Rejuvenation Of Blackpool
The topic of the essay will look into the increase in popularity and rejuvenation of the seaside
town of Blackpool in the north west of England. Various factors played a role in the growth in
popularity for visiting Blackpool. The popularity of Blackpool will be compared to the gradual
decline of the destination. The destination will then be analysed to see if the area is contributing
enough facilities for the rejuvenation of Blackpool. Butler s TourismArea Lifecycle will be used to
determine if the area of Blackpool has successfully rejuvenated the area to attract tourists.
Blackpool first reached popularity throughout the eighteenth century. Serval factors resulted in the
expansion of tourism in Blackpool. The first factor was the publishing of a book on the positive
effects of sea water titled the uses of sea water by Richard Russel. In the book, he stated, One
should drink sea water, bathe in it and eat every product of the sea in which its virtue is
concentrated (Russel.R 1760). The printing of the dissertation increased the tourism to Blackpool
slightly. In 1841, the population of Blackpool was one thousand and during the summer the
population rose to three thousand, Walton, J.K. (1998). Without the availability of transport to
Blackpool tourism was only available to affluent people. This stage is the exploration phase of the

Memory
One of the human functions that is intriguing to me and makes people unique from each other is
human memory. I am finding that through experiences and what we remember from those
experiences, our brain develops and humans form their interpretation of the world and the things
around them based on their memory. Our favorite films and the ones we dislike the most are part
of the many things that we draw our conclusions from based on memory. Knowing this can help
me create more dynamic characters in my scripts because I can better form characters based on

The way that I view a solution like this is taking the easy way out. It seems for no matter what
condition you are going through in this country, there is nobody to sit and help you through a
situation besides a bottle of pills. I don t know what should happen exactly as a solution, but if
we know that weaker emotion equals weaker memories than why can t a psychiatrist work with
patients in doing what they are hoping the pill can do? I m personally apathetic in this area of

Flashbulb memories are a clear memory of an emotionally significant moment or event. This is

biomes in South Africa, the human influences on biomes and the meaning of biodiversity.
Question 1:
The biodiversity of a biome refers to the variety of living organisms, like plants, animals, fungi etc.,
found in this particular biome.
Question 2:
I live in Gauteng, South Africa which is classified as the grassland biome. Plants found in the
grassland biome are also adapted to survive fire as grasslands often burn.
Figure 2: sample of the grassland biome.
Task 1:
We as a group have chosen the savanna (terrestrial) and the wetland (aquatic) biomes of South
Africa to investigate:
Savannas
1.1)The Savannas are found around the northern parts and Lowvelds of Southern Africa, in the
provinces: Mpumalanga, Limpopo, the North West province and parts of the Northern Cape,
Gauteng, Kwazulu Natal and the Eastern Cape. The largest biome that makes up 46% of South
Africa is the savanna biome.
1.2)Savannas are split into two layers: the upper layer which is called the shrubveld and the lower
layer called the woolands , or more commonly known as the bushveld . Savannas are generally

Philippines Imperialization
The independence of the Philippines brought a new hope to the citizens that they would finally be
able to govern themselves. Imperialization from the Spanish in the 1500 s, followed by U.S. control
up until the end of World War II left the country hungry for economic resources and trustworthy
leaders. Even with independence from the United States, they were unable to escape from unethical,
elite leaders that were favored by the US government. Numerous citizens and nationalist leaders
attempted to revive the economy multiple times, yet there was always some way it would fail.
Although there were notable benefits in the aftermath of their independence, such as better
commerce and strong leaders who brought economic progress, overall its impacts... Show more

Often, the social order for most imperialized countries are for the benefit of the colonizing country
rather than the people themselves (Scipes). This held true for the Philippines, as their economy was
mostly controlled by the US. In another article, author Kathleen Weekley claims that, the American
administration tried to eradicate Filipino nationalism when it threatened US interests . By ignoring
nationalist pleas for economic reform, they treated the Philippines differently than other postwar
Asian countries; they implemented [reforms] on Japan, Korea and Taiwan, (Weekley) while putting
no effort on the Philippines. Even after their independence, the United States continued to maintain
a close relationship with the Philippine government. However, when they were in need of
resources and support post World War Two, the American government pursued plans driven for
their own self benefit. They were inexperienced with the way of the Philippines and also thad little
knowledge of it. By controlling an unfamiliar country, elites, high class members of the
government, were able to take over and abuse the power. With this abuse of power the elites wasted
the nation s capital on luxury imports and and pushed the Philippines further into economic

The Portrayal Of The Talented Actors And Actresses Of...
The talented actors and actresses of THEATREWORKS present a haunting and captivating
production about a son returning home from a free spirited life to his devoted, widowed mother.
But dark secrets are slowly revealed from Mrs. Alving s hidden past that not only affect her but
the lives of everyone around her as well. Directed by Murray Ross, every component of this play
was clearly thought out, thus leading me to give this play a score of 8 out of 10 overall.
The cast was small; it only had five characters. But each was crucial in the development of the
story, and they all played off each other equally. Helen Alving, played by Sharon Andrews, is the
main character, widow of Mr. Alving, and the owner of a large estate. She is a headstrong and
independent woman who maintains the entire estate. Oswald Alving, played by Christian O
Shaughnessy, is the son of Helen Alving. He lives a free and wild life. Upon returning home, he
does the normal thing and drowns in alcohol and self pity as he battles his newfound illness and
secrets from the past. Pastor Manders, played by Dan Mason, is a long time friend of Helen, as
he helped her cope through her misjudged hard and sinful life. He devotes his entire life to God
and wants to lead Helen, Oswald, and Jacob in the direction of righteousness, but often falls prey
to the power of deception and misjudgment. Jacob Engstrand, played by Tom Paradise, is an old
sailor with a gimpy leg. Although he does have good intentions, he tends to bend

The History Of Antidepressants And Its Effects On The...
The history of antidepressants began with isoniazid, which was an anti tuberculosis medication.
This came after finding that the medication had euphoric effects on the patients taking it. The drug
had a mood altering side effect which later became the primary effect for depression and was a
basis for synthesis of generations of new antidepressants (Indian J Psychiatry, 2011).
Antidepressants are psychiatric medications given to patients with depressive disorders to alleviate
symptoms (MNT, 2012). Neurotransmitters in the brain can cause changes in mood and behavior,
antidepressants can help correct these chemical imbalances. Many psychiatric conditions can be
treated with antidepressants including anxiety disorders and dysthymia. According to
medicalnewstoday.com, there were 13.3 million people using antidepressants in 1996 by 2010 that
number jumped to 23.3 million. The website goes on to say they believe the increase in
antidepressantuse can be credited to a higher need for mental health treatments, campaigns
promoting mental health care being more widespread and mental health treatments becoming more
widely accepted. In the years since the antidepressant age came to be many new antidepressants
have been made, the Royal College of Psychiatrist say there are at least thirty different kinds of
antidepressants, all of which can be divided into five main types.
There are five main types of antidepressants; MAOIs, NASSAs, SNRIs, SSRIs and Tricyclics.
MAOI stands for monoamine

Etic And Emic Analysis On Suicide Terrorism
Etic and Emic Analysis on Suicide Terrorism Exploring different cultures as well as your own in
order to understand the various ways they do things compared to our own can be enlightening as
well as challenging. The main challenge comes from being used to your own culture that it is
difficult to view a different culturewithout any personal bias. Being born and raised in a culture and
getting used to those norms of everyday life contributes to the bias that one may show, believing
that their own culture is superior to another. This type of thought process is called ethnocentrism.
But with the use of an etic and emic approach to analyze your own culture and different cultures
will help eliminate ethnocentrism. Using an outsider s... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reader eventually figures out that Nacirema culture is indeed the American culture. This
article is very helpful in understanding that just because cultural aspects of America are the norm
for you, those same aspects can seem eccentric to people of a different culture. Suicide terrorism
is one of those acts of violence that is almost impossible to defend against. In his article, Atran
(2003) explains suicide terrorism as the targeted use of self destructing humans against
noncombatant typically civilian populations to effect political change (pg. 1534). One of the most
remembered dates is American history is September 11, 2001. This was a day in which suicide
terrorism took the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans (History.com, 2010). This suicide attack is
where 19 Al Qaeda followers hi jacked four airplanes and used them to crash them into the World
Trade Center in New York and into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. This triggered the then
President, George W. Bush to declare war to destroy Osama bin Laden s terrorist network based
there (History.com, 2010). Osama bin Laden was Al Qaeda leader that claimed responsibility of
the suicide attack on the United States. This type of use of suicide terrorism was not only used to
kill many innocent people, but to be televised and reported on to put fear into the

Lenin s Role In The 1917 Revolution
History Coursework Plan Section I Introduction Introduce Lenin and aims of the essay such as
giving a balanced view of Lenin s Legacy. Try to keep it short. Section II Lenin s Role in the 1917
Revolution Points for Lenin The April Thesis The April Thesis was a monumental step in Lenin s
step to revolution. The speech outlined the failures of the provisional Government. This helped
gained the sympathy of the general public of Russia and boosted support for the Bolsheviks. The
April thesis laid much of the ideological groundwork of the Bolsheviks when they had gained
power. The April Thesis had united key factions in the Provisional Government such as the Workers
and Soldiers. Without the April Theses, it is possible that the Russian Revolution would not happen
and Russia s power would still be kept under the hands of the Russian Oligarchs. This makes Lenin
significant to the 1917 revolution. (Refer to counterpoint) All Power to the Soviets Lenin united his
strongest supporters by uniting the masses against the provisional government. Lenin understood
that he could orchestrate a new uprising in much the same way that the previous one had happened,
by initiating large street demonstrations. This was an extremely significant step to revolution as
without these demonstrations, he would not be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This made the provisional government itself extremely unpopular. They were unable to meet the
demands of the Workers, Peasants and Soldiers demands as they were too selfish and was
unwilling to work against their own Self interest in the best interests of the country. This made them
extremely weak and anyone could have united the people against the provisional government.
Examples of failures include lack of distribution of food, land and not bringing peace. Points will

What Is The Battle Of Jutland Essay
The Battle of Jutland There are many battles that make up a war, both large and small. Each
battle won is a step towards winning the war. Some conflicts are more critical than others. The
Battle of Jutland which took place during World War I was one such battle. The Battle of Jutland
was a pivotal point and set the tone for the rest of World War I
. After World War I began the British
had put up a blockade in order to keep Germany from entering the Atlantic and causing interference
with the British Naval Fleet and their merchant trade. It wasn t too long before the Germans had
enough and realized something had to be done. The Battle of Jutland was set into motion by an
attack by the German Navy on the towns of Lowestoft and Yarmouth, on the night of April 24th
and 25th 1916. They did this in order to garner a response from the British Navy. With... Show more

Both sides went at this full force and exhausted massive amounts of resources. Though the battle
was short lived it was hard fought by both opposing sides. Although they were outranked in
terms of size and number by the British Naval Fleet, the German Navy fought mightily and
according to them they emerged the victor of this battle. However according to the British side
they were the winners of the battle. It s hard to determine who was the clear winner of this battle
in the aftermath. After the Battle of Jutland both sides of the conflict limped away with severe
damages to their fleets, in ships and casualties lost. The British lost a total of 6,784 men and 14
ships including three battle carriers. Germany lost 3,058 men and 11 ships total, and for this
reason Germany claimed victory. However due to the size difference of the fleets at the beginning
of the battle Germany suffered enough loss that it was unable to recover enough to sail and operate
its fleets. It never challenged the British Naval Fleet

Social construction theorists suggest that identity differences are categories constructed by social
rather than biological processes. Importantly, social categories are bounded by and are often
dichotomised in both the private and public psyche. Markus et al further argue that Australia s
current social and political responses to difference are situated within the broader context of
colonial invasion, Indigenous oppression and the White Australia Policy. In the political power play
and linguistic treatment of the emblematically powerless reveals not only core party values, but
varying conceptions of Australian identity. This is especially recognisable when political debate is
considered in the context of three distinct time periods and political situations, demonstrating a
transient grasp of elusive Australianness in a society defined not by what is desirable, but what is
not, thereby degrading ideals of multi cultural egalitarianism. Put simply, Australia s postcolonial
desire to control its borders and regulate the Hegelian Other underpins the politicisation of the boat
people phenomenon. This relates closely to Chomsky s assertion that intentionally inducing fear of
a terrifying enemy is a standard device used to whip the domestic population of any country into
line behind contentious

  • 2. Essay on Suzanne Britts Sloppy People vs Neat People Neat People vs. Sloppy People appears in Britt s collection show and tell. Mingling humor with seriousness (as she often does), Britt has called the book a report on her journey into the awful cave of self: You shout your name and voices come back in exultant response, telling you their names. In this essay about curtain inescapable personality traits, you may recognize some aspects of your own self, awful or otherwise. For a different approach to a similar subject, see the next essay, by Dave Barry. I ve finally figured out the difference between neat people and sloppy people. The distinction is, as always, moral. They give loving attention to every detail. When sloppy people say they re going to tackle the surface of the desk, they really mean it. Not a paper will go unturned; not a rubber band will go unboxed. Four hours or two weeks into the excavation, the desk looks exactly the same, primarily because the sloppy person is meticulously creating new piles of paper with new headings and scrupulously stopping to read all the old book catalogs before he threw them away. A neat person would just bulldoze the desk. Neat people are bums and clods at heart. They have cavalier attitude toward possession, including the family heirlooms. Everything is just another dust catcher to them. If anything collects dust, it s got to go and that s that. Neat people will toy with the idea of throwing the children out of the house just to cut down on the clutter. Neat people don t care about process. They like results. What they want to do is get the whole thing over with so they can sit down and watch the rasslin on TV. Neat people operate on two unvarying principles: Never handle any items twice, and throw everything away. The only thing messy in a neat persons house is the thrash can. The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, by Gabriel MГЎrquez, is related to the classical theme of human s selfishness verses sympathy. However, MГЎrquez uses narrative elements such as plot, setting, and different characters, to provide much more in depth sources of evidence to support his theme. In The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, MГ Ўrquez uses an Old Man who is supposed to be an angel to display human s tendencies to show both brutality and/or grace depending on the situation. The bizarre, tattered looking man with wings is found in a town to see a little boy who is sick. Basketball Vs Football Vs Basketball Track Field vs Football, Baseball Basketball Sports are one of the most popular extracurricular activities among high school students and even adults that choose to professionalize their sport. Each sport has its share of disadvantages that all help in contributing to one particular sport truly being the best to take part in. Track and field is easily the best sport for anyone to choose to participate in. Track and field is a sport in which various competitive athletic events take place that establish the skills of running, sprinting, jumping and throwing on a running track and an adjacent field. Track and Field favors a wide range of body types, has a lightweight uniform and is the safest in contrast to football, baseball and basketball, which makes it the most idealistic of the sports. Track and field is a sport most well known for its teamwork. The sport s teamwork is emphasized and strengthened through its diversity. Track is abundant in diversity due to the fact that there is a variety of events to participate in as opposed to playing the same game as everybody else like in football, baseball and basketball. For example, the object of football is to get the ballto the other end; the object of baseball is to run around a diamond before someones throws a ball home. Lastly, the main concept of basketball, much like football, is to dribble the ball to the other end of the court. Track and field is also much safer than football, baseball and track. Instructional Systems Design Models provide designers effective ways to identify solutions to support the needs of an organization. This paper will discuss the characteristics of the Experiential LearningModel, Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction Model, and the Gerlach and Ely Models along with providing a comparison and contrast of these models. Characteristics of ELM, ARCS, and Gerlach and Ely Models Experiential Learning Model (ELM): Based on early work from John Dewey, Kurt Lewin, and Jean Piaget, ELM was developed in 1974 by David A. Kolb and Ron Fry in 1974. This model emphasizes the idea that learning occurs when the student takes interest in the subject matter and engages in self initiated learning. Learning is an on going process that is based on experience, interactions with the environment, and involves obtaining knowledge through social interactions. The ELM is composed of four elements: Concrete experience, observation and reflection, Forming abstract concepts, and testing in new situations and five steps which consist of: Experience, Share, Process, Generalize, and Apply (Moore, Eric T. 2013). Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction (ARCS) Model: The model was developed by John Keller in 1979 who believed that motivation of students had direct correlation to their ability to ... William Shakespeare s Globe Theatre Essay Shakespeare s Globe Theatre The Globe Theater, an entertainment outlet for all people of that time, provided a place for Shakespeare s plays to be performed. It was the third and most famous playhouse in London. When it was built, it was one of the most important playhouses in London. The Globe s architecture was intriguing for its time and its life was long and prosperous. The Globe was built by two brothers, Cuthbert and Richard Burbage. They had inherited the Globe s predecessor, The Theatre, from their father, James Burbage (Williams 365). Fearing their lease would run out, the brothers dismantled it and carried the materials to Bankside, where the Swan and Rose already stood (Britanica). It was built ... Each of the sixteen shareholders of the globe made about 25 pounds (Williams 365). When James came to the throne in 1603, he favored the Globe, bringing it success (Andrews 167). One night before a planned revolt, The Chamberlain s company was asked to perform Richard II in order to instill mutinous thoughts in the audience. (Westerhof) The admission to the Globe was one shilling to the boxes. Lee stated that the general admission was one penny, and a stool on the stage was sixpence. • 9. The Influences of Oscar Wilde The Picture of Dorian Gray The Influences of Oscar Wilde Throughout his life Oscar Wilde had many strong influences exerted upon him. During his early childhood his mother influenced him and into college some of his professors and certain philosophers left a substantial impression upon him. Into adulthood these influences leaked out in his writing. These influences gave him ample ideas for writing The Picture of Dorian Gray. Wilde s study of the Hellenistic ideals of Epicurus, his coddled lifestyle as a child and his devotion to the movement of Aesthetics and Moral Ambiguity have produced one of the most astounding works of horror fiction. Oscar Wilde more effeminate attitude toward life and the way he looked at beauty can be attributed to his mother, Speranza. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But the most important influence at Oxford was Walter Pater, Fellow at Brasenose College and the writer of the sensational Studies in the History of the Renaissance (1873). Pater S skepticism and the belief that followed, that the study of one s private experience is more fruitful than the study of a chaotic external world, represented an exciting contrast to conventional social and moral wisdom. For a sensitive young undergraduate like Wilde to learn that the aim of life is to cultivate the deepest response to what is beautiful profound, or curious is to place in front of him an irresistibly attractive way of life. (Ericksen 17) This indicates that Pater was a direct influence on Wildes insatiable love for beauty which spilled over into The Picture of Dorian Gray. During his college years Wilde also came across the teaching of Epicurus, a Greek philosopher who lived from 342 270 B.C.E. and taught that pleasure was the highest good. He was active during the Hellenistic period and had a defining influence on those defined as Aesthetes and Decadents, particularly Walter Pater and his occasional disciple Oscar Wilde. • 10. The Human Immune System Of Multiple Structures The human immune system consists of multiple structures. These structures include the following: tonsils and adenoids, thymus, lymph nodes, spleen, appendix, lymphatic vessels, and bone marrow. HIV involves many structures/components of the immune system, so it is important to understand the structures and function of each involved component. Calles, Evans, and Terlonge (2010) clearly explain the parts of the immune systemaffected by HIV. To begin the immune system uses antigens to help fight against infection by working with antibodies to produce an immune response (Calles, Evans, Terlonge, 2010). Furthermore, the immune system produces lymphocytes (i.e. also known as white blood cells). There are two types of lymphocytes produced, B cells and T cells. B cells remain in bone marrow (i.e. where B and T cells are made) and T cells move to the thymus (Calles, Evans, Terlonge, 2010). After their migration, T cells finish cell development, become immunocompetent, replicate, and differentiate. There are two important functions of T cells, which include maintenance of the immune system and destroying cells with certain antigens. There are distinct T cells which are identified by surface markers (Calles, Evans, Terlonge, 2010). Concerning HIV, CD4+ are impacted the most. These cells are responsible for triggering B cells and macrophages when an antigen is present (Calles, Evans, Terlonge, 2010). Furthermore, T cells discharge cytokines, which are involved in ... Eye of the Beholder is a shocking morality lesson about the perception of beauty (Presnell McGee, 1998, p. 19). Darren Aronofsky s Pi Aronofsky s first feature film was the work Pi. The film follows Max Cohen, who is a genius mathematician. This ancient village, aging 9,000 years old, started to be excavated in 1990s (Marchant, 2009). There have been numerous remains discovered by archaeologists, including a large amount of houses and walls, a water well surrounded by stone baluster, a large number of human remains and plenty of artefacts made by stone, wood and bone (Holloway, 2014). One of the most exciting discoveries is some skeletons of women and children, which have been confirmed to be the earliest known cases of tuberculosis (Marchant, 2009). This settlement provides an excellent chance to study life in the Neolithic Age. Reasons of the subsidence of Atlit Yam are complicated. Basically, the erosion of saltwater, the tectonic effects and eustatic effects may all make contribution to the submergence of the village. • 22. Similarities And Differences Between Ancient Egypt And... Midterm Essay Maureen Cairns In comparing and contrasting the societies of Periclean Athens and ancient Egypt, we must first mention some of the characteristics of an actual society: a society has social levels and classes, a governmental system, and a developed culture. Both the societies of ancient Athens and Egypt fit into these parameters. In this essay we will explore social classes, gender relations, social inequality, and hierarchy as they apply to these societies. Both ancient Athens and Egypt adhered to a strict hierarchical framework, ranking people as superiors or inferiors. Old Kingdom Egyptian hierarchy is described as having the king and queen at the top, with priests, administrators, governors and army commanders coming second, then the commoners who worked mostly in agriculture, and finally, slaves, who had been captured in war. (Hunt, pg. 22). According to Esolen, (pg. 35), Egyptian society was structured as such: the Pharaoh came first, and was believed to be God on earth. Next came the Vizier , who was the pharaohs chief advisor. Nobles were next in the hierarchy, responsible for making local laws. Priests followed, and were responsible for performing rituals and ceremonies. Scribes were a very important group, as they were the only ones who could read or write, so they were the record keepers. A small percentage of boys from good families were trained for this particular job, starting at the age of five. Soldiers came next, and were responsible for the defense of the country. Craftsmen were skilled workers (weavers, tailors, jewelry makers), farmers worked the land, and at the very bottom were slaves, who were usually prisoners captured in war. In Periclean Athens, all adult male citizens had political and judicial power, even the poor. The upper class didn t agree with this, as they believed the poor lacked the education to make political decisions. Under Pericles, citizens could only be those whose mother and father were Athenian by birth, and because of this, a great many had their citizenship revoked. (Hunt, pg. 85). As mentioned in Hunt (pg. 90), women, slaves, and metics (foreigners granted permanent residency in exchange for military service) made up a majority of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Juxtaposition In Devil In The White City The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson is a nonfiction novel that sets during the building of the 1893 Chicago World s Fair, known as The World s Columbian Exposition as well. The novel describes the process of building the fair and the architect who builds it to the evil murderer who exploits the fair to lure in his victims. Erik Larson uses rhetorical strategies such as selective connotationand word choice, imagery, and juxtaposition, to contrast the white cityfrom the black city. Contrary to the white city which was the exposition, the black city, the rest of Chicago, brought negativity and hatred to the people. In it was a blighted, hellish place full of noise and dust and smoke and inhuman towers that blocked the sun and she hated it hated especially this gloomy building and the ceaseless clamor of construction (Larson 123), the black city is described through selective connotation and word choice. Larson creating an unpleasant mood by using such negative and degrading words such as blighted, hellish, and inhuman to describe Chicago, readers can envision a hateful and dull place. By placing and in front of the negative words: blighted, hellish, and inhuman and repeating and multiple times, the list of unappealing attributes of the city is elongated. Imperialization from the Spanish in the 1500 s, followed by U.S. control up until the end of World War II left the country hungry for economic resources and trustworthy leaders. Even with independence from the United States, they were unable to escape from unethical, elite leaders that were favored by the US government. Numerous citizens and nationalist leaders attempted to revive the economy multiple times, yet there was always some way it would fail. Although there were notable benefits in the aftermath of their independence, such as better commerce and strong leaders who brought economic progress, overall its impacts... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Often, the social order for most imperialized countries are for the benefit of the colonizing country rather than the people themselves (Scipes). This held true for the Philippines, as their economy was mostly controlled by the US. In another article, author Kathleen Weekley claims that, the American administration tried to eradicate Filipino nationalism when it threatened US interests . By ignoring nationalist pleas for economic reform, they treated the Philippines differently than other postwar Asian countries; they implemented [reforms] on Japan, Korea and Taiwan, (Weekley) while putting no effort on the Philippines. Even after their independence, the United States continued to maintain a close relationship with the Philippine government. However, when they were in need of resources and support post World War Two, the American government pursued plans driven for their own self benefit. They were inexperienced with the way of the Philippines and also thad little knowledge of it. By controlling an unfamiliar country, elites, high class members of the government, were able to take over and abuse the power. • 43. The Portrayal Of The Talented Actors And Actresses Of... The talented actors and actresses of THEATREWORKS present a haunting and captivating production about a son returning home from a free spirited life to his devoted, widowed mother. But dark secrets are slowly revealed from Mrs. Alving s hidden past that not only affect her but the lives of everyone around her as well. Directed by Murray Ross, every component of this play was clearly thought out, thus leading me to give this play a score of 8 out of 10 overall. The cast was small; it only had five characters. But each was crucial in the development of the story, and they all played off each other equally. Helen Alving, played by Sharon Andrews, is the main character, widow of Mr. Alving, and the owner of a large estate. She is a headstrong and independent woman who maintains the entire estate. Oswald Alving, played by Christian O Shaughnessy, is the son of Helen Alving. He lives a free and wild life. Upon returning home, he does the normal thing and drowns in alcohol and self pity as he battles his newfound illness and secrets from the past. Pastor Manders, played by Dan Mason, is a long time friend of Helen, as he helped her cope through her misjudged hard and sinful life. He devotes his entire life to God and wants to lead Helen, Oswald, and Jacob in the direction of righteousness, but often falls prey to the power of deception and misjudgment. Jacob Engstrand, played by Tom Paradise, is an old sailor with a gimpy leg. Although he does have good intentions, he tends to bend ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. The History Of Antidepressants And Its Effects On The... The history of antidepressants began with isoniazid, which was an anti tuberculosis medication. This came after finding that the medication had euphoric effects on the patients taking it. The drug had a mood altering side effect which later became the primary effect for depression and was a basis for synthesis of generations of new antidepressants (Indian J Psychiatry, 2011). Antidepressants are psychiatric medications given to patients with depressive disorders to alleviate symptoms (MNT, 2012). Neurotransmitters in the brain can cause changes in mood and behavior, antidepressants can help correct these chemical imbalances. Many psychiatric conditions can be treated with antidepressants including anxiety disorders and dysthymia. According to medicalnewstoday.com, there were 13.3 million people using antidepressants in 1996 by 2010 that number jumped to 23.3 million. The website goes on to say they believe the increase in antidepressantuse can be credited to a higher need for mental health treatments, campaigns promoting mental health care being more widespread and mental health treatments becoming more widely accepted. In the years since the antidepressant age came to be many new antidepressants have been made, the Royal College of Psychiatrist say there are at least thirty different kinds of antidepressants, all of which can be divided into five main types. This article is very helpful in understanding that just because cultural aspects of America are the norm for you, those same aspects can seem eccentric to people of a different culture. Suicide terrorism is one of those acts of violence that is almost impossible to defend against. In his article, Atran (2003) explains suicide terrorism as the targeted use of self destructing humans against noncombatant typically civilian populations to effect political change (pg. 1534). One of the most remembered dates is American history is September 11, 2001. This was a day in which suicide terrorism took the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans (History.com, 2010). This suicide attack is where 19 Al Qaeda followers hi jacked four airplanes and used them to crash them into the World Trade Center in New York and into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. This triggered the then President, George W. Bush to declare war to destroy Osama bin Laden s terrorist network based there (History.com, 2010). Try to keep it short. Section II Lenin s Role in the 1917 Revolution Points for Lenin The April Thesis The April Thesis was a monumental step in Lenin s step to revolution. The speech outlined the failures of the provisional Government. This helped gained the sympathy of the general public of Russia and boosted support for the Bolsheviks. The April thesis laid much of the ideological groundwork of the Bolsheviks when they had gained power. The April Thesis had united key factions in the Provisional Government such as the Workers and Soldiers. Without the April Theses, it is possible that the Russian Revolution would not happen and Russia s power would still be kept under the hands of the Russian Oligarchs. This makes Lenin significant to the 1917 revolution. (Refer to counterpoint) All Power to the Soviets Lenin united his strongest supporters by uniting the masses against the provisional government. • 47. What Is The Battle Of Jutland Essay The Battle of Jutland There are many battles that make up a war, both large and small. Each battle won is a step towards winning the war. Some conflicts are more critical than others. The Battle of Jutland which took place during World War I was one such battle. The Battle of Jutland was a pivotal point and set the tone for the rest of World War I . After World War I began the British had put up a blockade in order to keep Germany from entering the Atlantic and causing interference with the British Naval Fleet and their merchant trade. It wasn t too long before the Germans had enough and realized something had to be done. The Battle of Jutland was set into motion by an attack by the German Navy on the towns of Lowestoft and Yarmouth, on the night of April 24th and 25th 1916. They did this in order to garner a response from the British Navy. With... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both sides went at this full force and exhausted massive amounts of resources. Though the battle was short lived it was hard fought by both opposing sides. Although they were outranked in terms of size and number by the British Naval Fleet, the German Navy fought mightily and according to them they emerged the victor of this battle. However according to the British side they were the winners of the battle. It s hard to determine who was the clear winner of this battle in the aftermath. After the Battle of Jutland both sides of the conflict limped away with severe damages to their fleets, in ships and casualties lost. The British lost a total of 6,784 men and 14 ships including three battle carriers. Germany lost 3,058 men and 11 ships total, and for this reason Germany claimed victory. However due to the size difference of the fleets at the beginning of the battle Germany suffered enough loss that it was unable to recover enough to sail and operate its fleets. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Social construction theorists suggest that identity differences are categories constructed by social rather than biological processes. Importantly, social categories are bounded by and are often dichotomised in both the private and public psyche. Markus et al further argue that Australia s current social and political responses to difference are situated within the broader context of colonial invasion, Indigenous oppression and the White Australia Policy. In the political power play and linguistic treatment of the emblematically powerless reveals not only core party values, but varying conceptions of Australian identity. This is especially recognisable when political debate is considered in the context of three distinct time periods and political situations, demonstrating a transient grasp of elusive Australianness in a society defined not by what is desirable, but what is not, thereby degrading ideals of multi cultural egalitarianism. Put simply, Australia s postcolonial desire to control its borders and regulate the Hegelian Other underpins the politicisation of the boat people phenomenon.
