Analysis Of The Book A New Hope
Chapter 1 Every Trip Is a Quest (Except When It s Not) Response
List the five aspects of the QUEST and then apply them to something you have read (or viewed) in
the form used on pages 3‐5.
A quest must consist of a quester or character pursuing said quest, a destination, justification to
journey to that destination, challenges the quester faces along the way and, finally, the true reason
for making the journey. A movie that undoubtedly mirrors these components is Star Wars Episode
IV: A New Hope, which follows a young Luke Skywalker who finds himself on a quest, initially to
deliver Death Star plans to the planet of Alderaan at the request of the planet s princess and Rebel
Alliance leader Leia, and eventually to work with the rebels in order to bring down the Death Star.
While at first Luke was resistant to joining jedi master Obi Wan Kenobiin learning the ways of the
force and fulfilling the mission, he is quickly motivated by the deaths of his aunt and uncle at the
hands of Imperial Stormtroopers. On his journey, Luke faces many struggles such as when the
Millennium Falcon, the ship operated by companions Han Solo and Chewbacca, is captured via
tractor beam by the Death Star that would eventually lead to the death of mentor Obi Wan. In the
end though, Luke, Han and Leia are celebrated in taking down the Death Star, saving the lives of
many.

Being An Athlete
If there was one word to describe me in middle school it was tomboy. Although I was in dance
class and cheered for my school, I loved playing sports. I enjoyed getting rough and rowdy in the
backyard with my brother and being the only girl in the neighborhood that the boys let on their
team during pick up games. However, my girlfriends would often comment, Emily, you ll never be
cool by playing sports, and Beating the boys will never make you popular or get you a boyfriend.
At the time their comments didn t matter. It was what I enjoyed doing. Then came high schooland
all of a sudden it was clear I had two options. I could try become one of the cool girls and just cheer
or I could continue to pursue my love of sports. I... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Somehow my hand got caught beneath her as we fell to the ground. Popping to my feet I felt
some pain in my hand and I assumed I just jammed a finger. The game was too close and there
was no time to worry about an injury. When my coach saw I was favoring it, he called a timeout.
When asked if I was okay, I responded It hurts, but I think I just jammed a finger and proceeded
to tape it myself. Once done, I was back on the court, playing through the pain. My team suffered a
heartbreaking defeat that night and hours later I learned that my season could be over. The
emergency room physician instructed me to see an orthopedic surgeon, my hand was broken. The
next day I saw the surgeon. He reviewed the x rays and explained his plans for repairing the break.
Throughout the course of the treatment he consistently inquired about the team and how I was
handling not being able to play. His actions revealed that he was not only interested in my broken
hand, but in my overall well being. With a few weeks left in the season, I entered his office with
the notion that he would release me to play again. He looked at the x rays and did his usual
examination. Once completed, he said I know you want to play, but one bump the wrong way and
we ll be in surgery. He glanced at my mom and said If this was my daughter I wouldn t let you play
the rest of the season. While I respected his opinion, I did not like it. I knew there was

Outliers Paradigm Analysis
A paradigm is a model used to support ideas and claims made by an author. In the book Outliers the
author Malcolm Gladwell uses many paradigms to further illustrate his findings. Throughout the
book Gladwell discusses success and the things that effect ones chance at becoming successful in
life. It is brought to our attention though Gladwell s use of paradigms that there are many small
scale things that can effect ones chances at succeeding. Success is often associated with talent,
genetics, and resources but little do people know there are many things that impact ones success.
Throughout Gladwell s text he uses many paradigms. The first paradigm that he uses is in the
introduction of the book. Gladwell begins by using a small town in Pennsylvania called Roseto.
There was something very unique about this town. A doctor named Stewart Wolfe he found that the
rates of heart diseasein this little town were significantly less for those under the age of sixty five,
which during the time heart disease was a huge epidemic. Wolfe began to research the obvious
things that one would believe to have an impact on heart disease. He looked at diet... Show more

What the ten thousand hour rule states is to become professional at the task. Gladwell presents
the Beatles as one of the examples, he explains how the Beatles came to be as well as how they
came to the United States. He then goes on to tell how the Beatles not only played music for
many years before coming to the U.S but also how they played individually before becoming a
band. This gave them an advantage on their ten thousand hours. Gladwell also explained that the
band played in Hamburg, they played five or more hours a night seven days a week, they defiantly
did their share to get their hours in. many people don t think about the amount of work one puts in
to become truly great at something, like the Beatles

Geometric Isomers Post Lab Report

Analysis and Identification of two Geometric Isomers post Lab
9/2/15
1)As conducted in pre lab question, melting point for Maleic acid is 139 140в—¦C and Furmaic
acid is 287в—¦C, and in the lab experiment the sample of A and B was identified first by test the
melting point for each sample, and the result came as test tube B melted faster than test tube A,
which leads to test tube A is Furamic acid and test tube B is Maleic acid, because of the low
melting point for Maleic acid, it melted faster than Furamic. Furamic acid requires more thermal
energy in order to break the hydrogen bonds in the molecular.

tube B has higher melting point and more solubility in water than test tube A, therefore, test tube
B is a Maleic acid and test tube A is Furamic acid. Based on the structure of each acid, maleic has
a cis configuration of carboxylic group in the same side which makes it polar and the hydrogen
bonds are weak which take less thermal energy to break them apart therefore more soluble in water.
Whereas in Furmaic (test tube A) structure has a Trans (opposite) carboxylic group which make it
less soluble and higher melting point than Maleic

The Powerful Use Of Abuse In Sweat By Zora Neale Hurston
Sweat Looka heah, Sykes, you done gone too fur. Ah been married to you fur fifteen years, and
Ah been takin in washin for fifteen years. Sweat, sweat, sweat! Work and sweat, cry and sweat,
pray and sweat! Does living with abuse help you gain the strength to become a stronger woman?
Also, when does enough become enough? Such a quote is found in Zora Neale Hurstons short story,
Sweat . This quote expresses the discussion theme better than any story that has ever been told
before about abuse that is endured during a relationship. This quote helped me realize many
different things that women tend to go through in a relationship. A lot of times women take abuse,
whether it is physical, mental or emotional abuse. Society also tends to put women in a category
that is beneath a man, which may give a man the thought of him having power over women, but in
actual reality this is called abuse. The definition of abuse is the improper use of something, and that
is exactly what is happening to Delia in Sweat .
Zora Neale Hurston was considered one of the pre eminent writers of twentieth century African
American literature. Hurston was closely associated with the Harlem Renaissance. She has also
influenced writers such as Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, Gayle Jones, Alice Walker, and Toni
Cade Bambara. Looking at her work, it can be found to be read as a work of feminist fiction, but
it is not why you would think it would be. The quote also possess that the character is faced with

The Automobile Industry Of Japan s Manufacturing...
Taichii Ohno (1912 1990) is best known not as a guru but a symbol of Japan s manufacturing
resurgence after World War II (Guide to Management Ideas and Gurus. 2008). Ohno worked in
Toyota, a Japanese car company as a production engineer. At the end of second world war, when
Toyota s productivity was way below that of its competitors, the president of Toyota Motor
Company highlighted that they must catch up with America within three years. Otherwise, the
automobile industry of Japan will not survive. Ohno and his associates then came to America to
study about the manufacturing process and after that invented Just in Time manufacturing
management method. The principle of Just in Time (JIT) is to produce and/or deliver the right
quantity of products, of the right quality, within the right time and at the right place in order to
increase productivity, efficiency and to decrease costs and wastes associated with overproduction.
According to International Journal of Economics, Business and Finance (2013), JIT consists of two
main elements which must be integrated together to function in harmony including human
resources, planning based on the elimination of wastes. The first key to JIT success is human
involvement which includes stockholders, owners of the company, labor organization, suppliers
and Government support. JIT creates the idea of involving all workers at different levels of the
organization. This can be achieved by motivation, communication, encouragement to

Why Is Forbidden Books Banned
Forbidden Books: Why banning books is never a good idea.
Numerous books have been prohibited by various people and countries all over the world,
however, is it really intelligent to do so? At the very least, I personally believe that it s a
completely ridiculous idea and that an approach of such likes should be lost. Everybody, regardless
of their background or living status, have a right to read what they desire for. Without question,
books are one of the great human inventions which originate from the will to record one s ideas,
findings and memories to pass down to future generations.
First of all, the possession of someone s freedom and the right to choose and read is essential,
therefore the banning of particular books, to me, is nonsense. However, it is understandable that
many books consist of uncomfortable explicit content which ... Show more content on

This book was published in 1988 and was banned for its content, which offended countless
Muslims due to the fact that it portrayed Islam as a deceptive religion which was sexually deviant.
It is also known how there were many gruesome incidents situated around the problem concerning
the book. Examples include a Japanese translator of the book being stabbed to death as well as an
Italian translator encountering yet another assault, which resulted in a serious injury. Clearly, it can
be seen how easily the antagonism developed into an irreparable situation. Therefore, allow me to
affirm how books should not have the option of being banned to avoid predicaments likewise.
In the end, I find books to be a valuable source of information and beliefs that cannot, and should
not, be bound by the chains of selfishness. Furthermore, people are privileged to read and express
their thoughts in freedom. Thus, I believe that a person s choice of books should never be affected
by anyone and should be chosen accordingly by the person

Theme Of Fabliau In The Canterbury Tales
A fabliau is aptly categorized as a scandalous tale meant to satirize the bourgeois through the
depiction of bourgeois characters. This is the genre Chaucer writes The Miller s Tale, from his The
Canterbury Tales, in so he can distinguish the social class levels of the people on the pilgrimage.
Chaucer shows us the differences by paralleling then transforming certain aspects of this fabliau
with the same elements of the chivalric romanceof the Knight s Tale.
Fabliaux are salacious tales driven by elements such as deception to acquire money or
possessions, to get sexual gratification, or to get revenge on somebody for a past wrong. The
fabliau hinges upon an elaborate trick, set up with huge care in the story, contains the climax of
the tale, and ends abruptly as the story itself ends. It is actually unknown whether the initial
purpose of such a tale was for the nobility to mock the non aristocrats with whom they competed
for status, or whether the bourgeois told fabliaux as an act of self mockery, to show how much the
middle class has risen.
In the Miller s prologue, we can infer that the Host wants the chronology of the storytelling to
follow the levels of class; thus the reason why he solicits the Monk to tell a story after the noble
Knight. The Host wants the Monk repay the Knight a little for his tale, but the inebriated Miller
volunteers to pay the Knight his wages. (86, 87) From the context, it appears that the Miller
interprets the Host s request to repay

Rock N Roll In The 1950s
Rock n Roll in the 1950s: The change in America
Music as a whole blends together. One style leads to another, the music becomes more progressive.
It evolves to fit the new generation, leaving the old generation behind. From the spritual songs of
the late 1800s to the gospel of the early 1900s. Then it changed into rhythm and blues, and when the
1950s rolled around it became Rock n Roll. With the invention of new iconic instruments like the
Fender Precision Bass and then the Fender Stratocaster, the sound of the music changed. The sound
that was soft and low was now crunchy and loud. While it did not sit well with the adults, it was a
hit among the new generation. Even the African American roots of the music didn t deter the youth

To which they did not approve. They felt it had a rebellious nature. And lead to teens not being
more defiant, and less conforming. But most of all they hated who played the music. Most of the
musicians and music writers were African American. Even though they had earned the respect of
many people while fighting in WWII, their culture was still shunned by most of the public. But
Rock was all about being insobordinate. The fact that the parents hated it made it even more
popular among the teens. The parents might have had their own little pet names about it calling it
as blues legend B.B. King said in an interview with The Guardian, the Black Chittlin circuit. But to
the youth it was just music. The acceptance of this generation was going to bring a new opportunity
for Black America in the fight for civil rights.
Even with the definite roots in Black culture, most of the main performers however were white.
Take Elvis Presley for example, the songs he sang were the normal blues rock style, but he was
white. He was still part of the culture, he was thought as black. It was a common saying among
the musicians at the time was that If you were white and played blues you were black once. These
Black roots and White musicians led to this music being called a black and white hybrid. This fact
was what turned away most adults from this

Alcohol And Tobacco At A Young Age
Introduction: During adolescence children tend to experiment new experiences and experimenting
with alcohol and drugs is common. It is very unfortunate that the teenagers often don t realize the
consequences they are going to face in the future due to their actions today. They also have a
tendency to feel indestructible and immune to the problems that others experience. It is obvious
that usage of alcohol and tobacco at a young age would definitely spoil their health and would
have many health issues. Due to the changes during adolescence, some teenagers would try
alcohol and tobacco once and stop, while some would try them and use occasionally. However,

Women s National Basketball Association Essay
The Women s National Basketball Association, more commonly known as the WNBA, is a
professional basketball league consisting of 12 teams spanning across the United States. The
league was founded in 1996 but didn t officially kick off until 1997. While it s not the first major
women s professional basketball league in the United States, the WNBA is the only league that has
received full backing from the National Basketball Association, more commonly, the NBA. Now in
its 20th season under the direction of league president Lisa Borders, the regular season is played
from June to September with the playoffs spanning through the remainder of September into the
middle of October. Although they have the full backing from the NBA, there are still a few
discrepancies between the two leagues. Even though WNBA games are not as exciting as NBA
games, the players of the WNBA deserve equal pay because the team mindset makes the game
more challenging, players continue to show their hard work in the offseason by playing
overseas, and they inspire young girls by providing for charities as a result of their work. There
is the idea that the WNBA is less exciting than the NBA due to the lack of dunking. The dunk, or
the alley oop (lob to the dunk) has become an intricate part of the men s game but it is not so
often used in the woman s. While the average NBA player stands at about 6 3 , the average
WNBA player is only about 5 10 . With this in mind, almost every single NBA player is able to

The Beginnings Of Intellectual Property Rights
Beginnings of Intellectual Property Rights Intellectual property rights will remain a part of
international trade agreements in the future, but the global activity will likely be characterized by
varying standards and improved enforcement, reflecting evolution in social, cultural and political
attitudes, and a deeper understanding of the relationships among innovation, creation and the more
efficient distribution of intellectual property. Increased cooperation might occur at the governance
level. Many of the fast and unprecedented changes in intellectual property lawand policy over the
past two decades are due to their intersection with international tradeand the numerous international

Underlying this activity are changes to intellectual property rights laws and policies. The following
are the major enforcement inadequacies in the protection of intellectual property rights: No
preliminary or final injunctive relief, lack of seizure and impoundment relief, lack of exclusion of
infringing imports, lack of compulsory court process and/or discovery, inadequate civil remedies,
usually in monetary dam ages, limits on recoveries preclude deterrent effects, fine or other criminal
penalties inadequate, unreasonably slow enforcement process during which illegal activity
continues, enforcement officials systematically discriminate against foreigners, training and
resources for enforcement inadequate, court decisions biased or political, and corruption. The
efforts to protect intellectual property rights suffer from three major problems: institutional issues,
philosophical issues, and handling of new technologies. The institutional issues refer to the
shortcomings of existing regimes and their enforcement. To begin with, the signatories to specific
agreements are limited. Thus, countries that are not a part of the agreement do not have to
subscribe to its provisions. Further, the agreements lack enforcement powers. In addition, the
agreements per se are limited

Tyre were able to harass the Macedonians. The Tyrians knew they had to take an offensive action.
They took action by using their superior war ships and used an old horse ship filled with
combustibles, lit it on fire, and rammed it against the bridge burning their work. Macedonians
tried to put out the fire but were killed or forced to flee due to warships coming filled with
archers. Alexander s anger grew far worse and stayed persistent. He sent out twice as many
engineers to work on the bridge as they headed north along the coast. He went back to the recently

He conquered Egypt and other major cities such as Babylonia and Elam. As he returned north,
Alexander knew it was time to head east and finish his Persian campaign (S. 2008). The battle of
the Persian Gate is the most significant. He wanted to invade Persia propery before winter
started. This was easy because the Royal Road, a Persian road used for trading and other
political reasons, connected Elam and Persepolis. The roads were split through the mountains in
modern day Haftgel. Parmenion was to take the Royal Road and Alexander took the most
dangerous road through the Zagros Mountains. Alexander massacred the Uxians tribe and no
one dared to challenge the Macedonian army. Soon Alexander crossed the Marun River, the
boarder of Elam and Persis, and reached to a plain. The Macedonians prepared to cross the
Persian Gate to reach the city of Persepolis. Persepolis is very important because if Alexander
were to capture it, the rest of the empire would too. However, Persian satrap, Ariobarzanes, was
aware of the move and prepared his counter attacks (2016). Callisthenes, who kept Alexander s
diary, wrote that Alexander had tens of thousands of soldiers, but since he took the most difficult

In many cases, it has been the awareness that change was even happening at all, the
understanding that the solid base from which prediction was being made might be about as solid
as quicksand. Even the most apparently immutable system or structure may be experiencing
change even as you look at it. By change I mean, of course, not just change in the sense of bigger
and better models and new ways of doing the same things you were doing before, but qualitative
change in the structure and behavior of the society in which you live. I mean new philosophies as
well as new gadgets. I m not saying that the appreciation of change is easy; far from it, particularly
today. As one of your more respectable social forecasters said recently, If you understand something
today, that means it must by definition already be obsolete. Our general relationship with the
present accelerating rate of change reminds me of the postcard from the patient on holiday to his
psychiatrist at home: Having a wonderful time. Why? The difficulty

Strength is In the Eye of the Beholder
In my quest to create a well rounded and A+ worthy essay about Shakespeare s As You Like It, I
came upon key elements of popular culture pertaining to feminism and the rhetoric used to describe
it. Of course, strong female character is a term thrown around plenty now days, however, I never
took a moment to contemplate what it meant. Unfortunately, my research dredged up a plethora of
unsettling ideas about what traits strong females posses, and has led me to think films should no
longer portray what is now classically called strong and instead produce more realistic female
characters, thus redefining a more positive representation of women. Without this awareness, young
adults will continue to believe that a strong womanfalls into... Show more content on

She does not rely on super human ability or talent, but instead hard work and perseverance. She is
truly heroic, for courage is defined as the ability to do something that frightens one and through
each of the films she shows us the terror she is living in and her ability to overcome it.
This fictitious strong female is a symptom of a greater problem, one that has stemmed from former
cultures surrounded by the gender roles put in place by society. Rosalind from As You Like It,
while superficially powerful is also weakened by her choices. She recognizes her weakness as a
woman when she states, Beauty provoketh thieves sooner than gold, and decides to dress as a
man as she ventures into the world (Page 26). Although this is a different time it is still relevant
as her only strength comes from donning a costume of a man. In modern film, female characters
classified as strong are picking up traits considered more masculine and emulating men, although
not physically. To compensate for this loss of obvious gender roles in clothing, females have been
given their femininity back on only a cosmetic level, while increasing male ideals drastically
proving to audiences it just a character and they have no need to fear the loss of their well known
ideas about men and women. People find comfort in tradition, and Shakespeare provides closure by
having Rosalind spend the entire play working towards getting a man, and then returning

Sobibor Death Camp Research Paper
R
Throughout the course of the Holocaust there were major rebellions at 3 of the 6 death camps
(death camps were concentration camps that carried out mass killings under the SS). Treblinka,
Sobibor and Auschwitz Birkenau all had major uprising by inmates. Although the methods used by
inmates in each case vary, they all share a common theme: they were caused by desperation from
the imminent presence of death.
The uprising at the Treblinka camp was triggered by a series of German military defeats
bringing the camp closer to liberation by allied forces. The Jewish prisoners knew that if the
allies came close to the camp the SS would liquidate all of the inmates and destroy the camp to
hide any evidence of the atrocities committed within. After careful planning and the discovery and
suicide of the original resistance leader, an escape was made. 300 inmates broke free of the
barbed wire fences as resistance fighters attacked the guards. During the SS lead manhunt that
followed, 200 of the 300 escapees ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

death to dispose of the bodies killed in the gas chambers. The Sonderkommandos were treated
better than most prisoners and had many special privileges because they needed to be in good
shape for the work they did. The SS also considered them to know too much about the horrors
going on and routinely gassed the entire unit every few months. Eventually a plan was made and
the Sonderkommandos attacked and killed 11 SS officers and seized the camp armory. The
uprising was soon discovered and the inmates had to run. About half of the original prisoners
made it out of the camp but most were killed by the surrounding minefield or recaptured by SS
patrols. Of 600 prisoners, 58 are known to have survived the

What Is Locke s Argument For The Existence Of Spinoza
Similarly to the way Spinoza took the terms given by Descartes to an extreme, Berkeley did with
Locke. When Locke argued for the existence of a substratum holding our perceptions of
phenomena together, he defined the substratum as something, I know not what. Berkeley, found
that notion to be preposterous and a blatant contradiction. It is unintelligible to claim to have a
coherent idea of something that is by definition, impossible to have an idea of it. Besides, even
if it were remotely possible to form an idea of substance there would be no reason to believe
there could ever be such a thing in existence. It is not impossible for all of our perceptions to
exist without the presence of a material substance. Berkeley goes on to reject Locke s distinction
between secondary and primary qualities; because he feels that if anyone took the time to really
read about it, then they would realize they are the same thing. In Berkeley s opinion it is a

Bp Evaluation of Leadership During and After Deepwater...
III. Discuss and evaluate the leadership of change:
a.)
When it comes to BP and the changes that were made in the post crisis era since the oil spill it is
very important to reference their history of safety violations. The oil spill of project Deepwater
Horizon was one largest examples of their previous lack of care and respect to safety and the
earth. Previous to the spill they have been in trouble with the authorities for illegal dumping of
waste products in northern Alaska as well as being fined $13 million by OSHA for failing to
comply with safety violations four years after an explosion at a Texas refinery in 2005. BP has a
notable track record for paying out billions of dollars to offer compensation for accidents or slight

Hayward s decision to present a video explaining BP s top kill attempt took the company s
Louisiana command by surprise. As for Suttles himself, he insisted this week that there were no
massive underwater oil plumes in large concentrations from the spill. To NBC, he offered that it
may be down to how you define what a plume is here. (Associated Press)
With Hayward and Suttles appearances on the television screen it was starting to look like that no
one was in control or in charge at BP to the general public. This is what made it impossible for a
transformational reactive change to take place at BP during the time they needed it the most. BP
and their two executive spokespersons were faced with a very large problem when it came to their
adaptive personality attributes during the time of change. Both Hayward and Suttles showed a low
emotional intelligence and could not connect with the victims affected by the spill by showing
them empathy with their choice words and actions during the crisis.
When BP finally got the well capped 87 days later, after blaming both of their partners Transocean
and Halliburton for the systems and technology failure, BP was already planning on releasing Tony
Hayward and gave the date of October 1, 2010 for his replacement Bob Dudley, an American born

guess I would know what appeals to the Greasers, but I did not know what appealed to the Socs.
They were always behind a wall of aloofness, so it would be hard to know what appeals to them. I
was thinking of the ways that I could discover what the Socs liked. There is only one way to find

Leadership Comparison and Critique Essay
Leader Comparison and Critique: Steve Jobs Indra Nooyi

In 1978, J.M. Burns defined successful leaders as being transformational rather than transactional.
Burns described the transformational leader as having recognized the organization as a complex
system in a chaotic environment. The leader has also responded to complexity by being aware of
change. The transformational leader has established a shared vision and inspired the organization
to learn and evolve in response to change. Transformational leaders have driven radical change,
trading short term stability for long term survival. In 2007, Kouzes and Posner refined Burn s work

Leaders demonstrate their intense commitment to the values they espouse by setting an example.
It s how they earn and sustain credibility over time. Setting the Example is all about execution
and action. It s all about doing what you say. Leaders who are seen as practicing what they
preach are more effective than those leaders who don t. (Kouzes Posner, 94) As successful as Steve
Jobs appears to be, there are some leadership qualities that need to be improved. One such
behavior would be model the way (Kouzes Posner, 45) Steve Jobs has not established principles
concerning the way people should be treated, nor does Jobs create standards of excellence as a
leadership example for others to follow. In fact, this leader has been known to scream at
employees to the point of hyperventilation. (Pomiewozik, 2000) This leader has also been guilty
of failing to follow through on promises and commitments. As an employer, Jobs was obligated
to compensate employees for work as agreed upon in the job contract. That obligation to
compensate employees was not followed through when Jobs fired a P.R. consultant and refused
to pay the employee for completed work. (Pomiewozik, 2000) The demeaning attitude of this
leader should not serve as an example for employees. On one occasion Steve Jobs played a cruel
joke on an employee by pretending to offer the employee a position as Apple C.E.O. (Pomiewozik,

O Pioneers By Willa Cather
O Pioneers by Willa Cather follows a group of frontiersmen trying to survive in the harsh
conditions of the untamed west. The story follows the Bergsons, but more descriptively, the main
character, a girl named Alexandra Bergson. Throughout the story, Alexandra grows up to her full
potential and we are able to see her character just as rich and as mesmerizing as Willa hoped to
achieve. This is the character that Willa decides to revolve her story around and makes the reader
fully understand who the novelis truly about. Using this assumption, readers can conclude that O
Pioneers derives from Willa s real life experiences especially when dealing with her love life.
At the very beginning of the novel, Alexandra was given a huge responsibility. With her father
passing away it was up to her to inherit the farm and make it thrive. She was young, but very
determined and in that introspect, she was able to make the farm a huge success. For the time
period, this achievement was very difficult to obtain especially for a woman. This to me, could

Authenticity
Final Draft: Slater vs Turkle
How can Turkle s concept of authenticity help us see Slater in a new way?
Both face to face interaction and social networking sites (including Myspace, Twitter, and
Facebook) are forms of staying in contact with friends and family. While Nora from Turkle s Alone
together communicates her engagement and wedding date via email to her closest friends and
family, she could have easily announced it face to face, at a party or through a Facebook event.
While there are many ways of communicating information, the authenticity of these interactions as
well as its importance is up for debate. For Turkle, face to face interaction is to social networking as

The changes are for one temporary: in simply adjust[ing] the settings, turning the frequency,
current, and pulse up or down, one can go from feeling revved to having a peculiar wash of
sadness. (Slater, pages 2 3) In evening Mario out in such a way, it is clear that psychosurgery is
inducing superficial changes that lead to inauthentic interactions. Even the wife notes the
extraordinary change in Mario, remarking You re like the Energizer Bunny upon seeing him go
from a person who would back up at the sight of golden smear of shit to one who can now hear
her breathe...unafraid to hold her hand. (Slater, pages 1 3) The dramatic nature of these
temporary changes is in fact what is most troubling. In Who Holds the Clicker, Heath performs
electrode surgery on a homosexual man. By firing electrodes in his pleasure center while having
him watch movies of heterosexual encounters, he is able to turn said man (identified as B 19) into
a newly made man (Slater, pages 1)within 17 days. Although the electrode surgery on the
homosexual man was supposed to be a good deed, in actuality the homosexual man did not
conserve his individuality. As such, one can see that striving to forge face to face interaction comes
at the expense of yourself. In contrast, technology like Skype, Facebook and/or texting enables
human beings to clearly present themselves on their social networks while allowing human beings
to create or keep connections with others. Facebook profiles

The Issue Of Abortion And Abortion
Abortion is one of the most debatable and controversial issues that exists in our society. An
abortion is a medical procedure that terminates a pregnancy before 24 weeks. People who call
themselves Pro Life feel that it is the government s responsibility to preserve all life, regardless of
concerns for the pregnant woman s health, or for the quality of the life of the child. The Pro Choice
argument feels that a woman should have the choice when it comes to what they wish to do with
their own reproductive organs.
There s many arguments regarding abortions. One of many is that adoption is a viable alternative
to abortion. This statement implies that the only reason a woman would want to get an abortion is
to avoid raising a child, and that isn t the case. Depending on the circumstances, the mere act of
having a child in a hospital can cost between $3,000 and $37,000 in the United States. Giving birth
is dangerous, too: In the United States, pregnancy complications are the sixth most common cause
of death for women between the ages of 20 and 34.
Another misconception often thought about abortions is If a woman has sex, she has to pay the
consequences. Too many women have abortions for their own convenience or on impulse. Pro
Life activists leave no room for the grey area, which is unfair. Did you know over 2 thirds of
women who have abortions were on birth control or using protection. And what about the women
who are abstinent but were raped or victim to incest. I believe

Hospital Based Shootings
A disaster is an event that is a natural or man made occurrence that can disrupt or destroy the lives
of those it affects (Stanhope Lancaster, 2014). Management of a disaster includes four phases;
prevention, preparedness, response and recovery (Stanhope Lancaster, 2014). To date there have
been 154 hospital based shootings, which resulted in 235 dead or injured. (C.Catlett, 2012). The
purpose of this paper is to identify emergency preparedness and response to hospital based
shootings, and the role of the public health nurse in such a disaster.

Russell On Denoting
On Denoting and Definite Descriptions: Russell s Puzzle Solutions In his work, On Denoting ,
Bertrand Russell proposes a theory of denoting and descriptions, which he summarizes as follows:
Everything, nothing, and something, are not assumed to have any meaning in isolation, but a
meaning is assigned to every proposition in which they occur. This is the principle of the theory of
denoting I wish to advocate: that denoting phrases never have any meaning in themselves, but that
every proposition in whose verbal expression they occur has a meaning. (480) Russell contends that
the difficulties concerning denoting are [...] all the result of a wrong analysis of propositions whose
verbal expressions contain denoting phrases (480). In... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In considering this puzzle, Russell first introduces the principle of the indiscernibility of identicals
(hereafter the indiscernibility principle), which states that [i]f a is identical to b, whatever is true of
the one is true of the other, and either may be substituted for the other in any proposition without
altering the truth or falsehood of that proposition (485). That is, two identical entities can be used
interchangeably in any statement without altering the truth value of the statement in question.
Russell then sets forth the proposition George VI wished to know whether Scott was the author
of Waverly and concludes that, since Scott was in fact the author of Waverly, one can replace the
author of Waverly with Scott and thereby prove that George VI wished to know whether Scott was
Scott (485). Under the indiscernibility principle, both propositions are true since the terms the
author of Waverly and Scott are identical and thus wholly substitutable for one another. However,
while Russell finds the first proposition to be true ( George VI wished to know whether Scott was
the author of Waverly ), Russell concludes that the second proposition, George VI wished to know
whether Scott was Scott , is false due to the fact that an interest in the law of identity can hardly be
attributed to George VI (485). Herein lies the Substitutivity Puzzle. The

The Pastor And Teacher As A Gift
And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as
pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of
the body of Christ... (Ephesians 4:11 12). This passage in Ephesians establishes the ability to be a
pastor and teacher as a gift. The pastoris often looked at as the face of a local church. This is
evidenced by the fact that when people are discussing a church, someone will almost certainly
ask the question: Who is the pastor of that church? . The pastor plays an important part in a local
church. He is generally looked to as the leader, the head teacher, and the lead counselor to a
specific local assembly. But a pastor s not just the leader of a local church. It s important to
examine how the Bibledefines a pastor. The word used for pastor in Ephesians 4 literally means
shepherd. The same word is used in 1 Peter 5 when Peter instructs the elders to shepherd the
flock of God. For this reason, we can know that role of elder and overseer are synonymous with
pastor. They are interchangeable terms. Elders were appointed by apostles to be in charge of a
local church (Acts 14:23). This is what Jesus meant when he told Peter to shepherd My sheep (John
21:16). Shepherds, naturally, were in charge of the sheep they tended. They feed them, guide them,
care for, and retrieve their sheep. When one thinks about what this illustration entails, we begin to
see how the term pastor is

Declining Birth Rates
Before, characterizing the family was straightforward. Couples had a tendency to live together after
marriage, with kids following not long after. Presently, be that as it may, things have changed.

The Relevance of Disturbing Images The media today is a very powerful tool of

that comes the horrifying pictures of things such as earthquake aftermaths and disturbing videos

questionable as to what is measured as disturbing. In this essay, I will explain what I feel is

Mary Ward Art Analysis
Our art teachers are pretty cool; they care about the students and the creative process. This is a
brief introduction to the double lives of Mary Ward art teachers. Ms. Arturi currently teaches media,
photography, and film. Ms. Fortura teaches visual arts and design. Ms. Largo teaches visual arts
and religion. Mr. Notten teaches visual arts, art history, and the artsadmin course. And Ms. Powell
teaches media, film, and photography. They do have a life outside school, right? So, what do they
do after 2:50?
Ms. Arturi studied photography and humanities at York University, eventually transferring to
Ryerson s four year arts program. Her earlier works feature fashion photography and documentaries.
However, because photography has greatly evolved ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Powell received her Bachelor of Applied Arts at Ryerson University, studying image arts in
photography. She then went on to Queen s University to receive her Bachelor of Education in
Technological Education. Her artwork has mainly consisted of photography, although she has
also dabbled in film. She works in the modern digital age as well as exploring historical
processes of photography. These include, polaroids, hand colouring, using the dark rooms to
develop film, and many other alternatives. Powell has a particular interest in the abandoned,
places or things that may appear ugly on the outside but have their own weird hidden treasures.
She explains that it s neat to see how nature takes back these places. She also photographs small
towns and the more rural lifestyle. My art isn t deep , she says, but it s about finding beauty in
everything, beauty in every form . Powell spent her early years taking portraitures in the wedding
industry. Now, she has her own business alongside teaching and having a family. With this busy
lifestyle it is amazing that Powell s perspective on beauty is unchanged. Her perspective is
something unique and important something that everyone should see more of. The answer then is
yes, the Mary Ward art teachers do have a life after 2:50. They have allowed us to glimpse into
their personal life through their art. Their art has allowed us to know a little more about them and
their perspectives, beliefs, and values. This extremely brief introduction to their artwork proves that
our art teachers are dedicated and talented individuals, individuals worth learning from, and
individuals we can be inspired from. Next time you see them, ask some questions. You never know

The Changes in Police and Crime Drama Over Time Essay
The Changes in Police and Crime Drama Over Time
Crime drama has always been featured as one of the most popular genres of our society. However
over the year s crime drama has been changed and adapted to fit into different times. Many aspects
of crime drama have been changed such as camera shots, seriousness of crimes and police language
/jargon in order for crime drama to change with the times, become more realistic and retain its
former popularity.
Throughout time many crime programmes featured on T.V have changed through Media language
(Iconography, editing, camerawork and music). The Bill, first created in 1984 featured a lot of
Iconography. At the start of the title sequence the camera focuses... Show more content on

Camera shots and editing have also changed. Older title sequences of the Bill used long camera
shots, which were not varied and were focused on a particular person. However over the years as
technology has improved the title sequences have become faster paced and use shorter and varied
camera shots that create feelings of excitement and tension for the viewer.
Music has also changed. The original title sequence (1984) featured reggae style music and used
off beat instruments. This suggested that the programme was based in a multi cultural area. The
music in the late 80 s was more upbeat and faster paced, however it featured the same theme tune.
The music in the mid 90 s was jazzy and sophisticated. Music has become more upbeat due to
changes of personalities in society. However the theme tune has remained the same in order for
people of different times to identify the programme as a long remaining classic.
The storylines of each title sequence have also changed over time. In the original title sequence
we do not see the police s face. This indicates that the main emphasis of the programme is on the
job of the police rather than their characters. The slow moving music and camera shots convey the
sense that the programme does not feature dangerous crimes but simple crimes such as theft or
burglary. However the late 80 s title sequence shows clips of

Political, Religious, And Social Institutions
Group B Question 4
Harriett Martineau can be considered the first sociologist, she not only influenced Marx s work on
the political economy, but brought positivism to the English speaking world. Martineau was the
first to collect data through observation, and speak for and to the people.
Martineau s reflections on Society in America, are prime examples of her sociological methods.
Her ideas in this field were set out in her book How to Observe Morals and Manners. She believed
that some very general social laws influence the life of any society. Martineau s main contribution
to sociology was her claim that when studying society, one has to focus on all aspects of it. She
emphasized the importance of examining political, religious, and social institutions. Martineau
believed that by studying society in this way, one could infer why inequality existed. She also was
the first to create a systematic method of qualitative data; through observation. Using qualitative
data is tremendously important because one is able to examine complex questions that can be
difficult with quantitative methods, it also allows for more in depth examination of a subject.
Harriett Martineau also made economic and social ideas and options understandable to the ordinary
people. Harriet had the gift of explaining difficult ideas. She wanted people specifically the working
class to be aware of their situation, to gain consciousness, by educating them through her writings,
as explained through this quote,

  • 2. Analysis Of The Book A New Hope Chapter 1 Every Trip Is a Quest (Except When It s Not) Response List the five aspects of the QUEST and then apply them to something you have read (or viewed) in the form used on pages 3‐5. A quest must consist of a quester or character pursuing said quest, a destination, justification to journey to that destination, challenges the quester faces along the way and, finally, the true reason for making the journey. A movie that undoubtedly mirrors these components is Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, which follows a young Luke Skywalker who finds himself on a quest, initially to deliver Death Star plans to the planet of Alderaan at the request of the planet s princess and Rebel Alliance leader Leia, and eventually to work with the rebels in order to bring down the Death Star. While at first Luke was resistant to joining jedi master Obi Wan Kenobiin learning the ways of the force and fulfilling the mission, he is quickly motivated by the deaths of his aunt and uncle at the hands of Imperial Stormtroopers. On his journey, Luke faces many struggles such as when the Millennium Falcon, the ship operated by companions Han Solo and Chewbacca, is captured via tractor beam by the Death Star that would eventually lead to the death of mentor Obi Wan. In the end though, Luke, Han and Leia are celebrated in taking down the Death Star, saving the lives of many. I enjoyed getting rough and rowdy in the backyard with my brother and being the only girl in the neighborhood that the boys let on their team during pick up games. However, my girlfriends would often comment, Emily, you ll never be cool by playing sports, and Beating the boys will never make you popular or get you a boyfriend. When asked if I was okay, I responded It hurts, but I think I just jammed a finger and proceeded to tape it myself. Once done, I was back on the court, playing through the pain. My team suffered a heartbreaking defeat that night and hours later I learned that my season could be over. The emergency room physician instructed me to see an orthopedic surgeon, my hand was broken. The next day I saw the surgeon. He reviewed the x rays and explained his plans for repairing the break. Throughout the course of the treatment he consistently inquired about the team and how I was handling not being able to play. His actions revealed that he was not only interested in my broken hand, but in my overall well being. With a few weeks left in the season, I entered his office with the notion that he would release me to play again. He looked at the x rays and did his usual examination. Once completed, he said I know you want to play, but one bump the wrong way and we ll be in surgery. In the book Outliers the author Malcolm Gladwell uses many paradigms to further illustrate his findings. Throughout the book Gladwell discusses success and the things that effect ones chance at becoming successful in life. It is brought to our attention though Gladwell s use of paradigms that there are many small scale things that can effect ones chances at succeeding. Success is often associated with talent, genetics, and resources but little do people know there are many things that impact ones success. Throughout Gladwell s text he uses many paradigms. The first paradigm that he uses is in the introduction of the book. Gladwell begins by using a small town in Pennsylvania called Roseto. There was something very unique about this town. A doctor named Stewart Wolfe he found that the rates of heart diseasein this little town were significantly less for those under the age of sixty five, which during the time heart disease was a huge epidemic. • 8. The Powerful Use Of Abuse In Sweat By Zora Neale Hurston Sweat Looka heah, Sykes, you done gone too fur. Ah been married to you fur fifteen years, and Ah been takin in washin for fifteen years. Sweat, sweat, sweat! Work and sweat, cry and sweat, pray and sweat! Does living with abuse help you gain the strength to become a stronger woman? Also, when does enough become enough? Such a quote is found in Zora Neale Hurstons short story, Sweat . This quote expresses the discussion theme better than any story that has ever been told before about abuse that is endured during a relationship. This quote helped me realize many different things that women tend to go through in a relationship. A lot of times women take abuse, whether it is physical, mental or emotional abuse. Society also tends to put women in a category that is beneath a man, which may give a man the thought of him having power over women, but in actual reality this is called abuse. The definition of abuse is the improper use of something, and that is exactly what is happening to Delia in Sweat . Zora Neale Hurston was considered one of the pre eminent writers of twentieth century African American literature. Hurston was closely associated with the Harlem Renaissance. She has also influenced writers such as Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, Gayle Jones, Alice Walker, and Toni Cade Bambara. Looking at her work, it can be found to be read as a work of feminist fiction, but it is not why you would think it would be. The quote also possess that the character is faced with ... Taichii Ohno (1912 1990) is best known not as a guru but a symbol of Japan s manufacturing resurgence after World War II (Guide to Management Ideas and Gurus. 2008). Ohno worked in Toyota, a Japanese car company as a production engineer. At the end of second world war, when Toyota s productivity was way below that of its competitors, the president of Toyota Motor Company highlighted that they must catch up with America within three years. Otherwise, the automobile industry of Japan will not survive. Ohno and his associates then came to America to study about the manufacturing process and after that invented Just in Time manufacturing management method. The principle of Just in Time (JIT) is to produce and/or deliver the right quantity of products, of the right quality, within the right time and at the right place in order to increase productivity, efficiency and to decrease costs and wastes associated with overproduction. According to International Journal of Economics, Business and Finance (2013), JIT consists of two main elements which must be integrated together to function in harmony including human resources, planning based on the elimination of wastes. The first key to JIT success is human involvement which includes stockholders, owners of the company, labor organization, suppliers and Government support. Numerous books have been prohibited by various people and countries all over the world, however, is it really intelligent to do so? At the very least, I personally believe that it s a completely ridiculous idea and that an approach of such likes should be lost. Everybody, regardless of their background or living status, have a right to read what they desire for. Without question, books are one of the great human inventions which originate from the will to record one s ideas, findings and memories to pass down to future generations. First of all, the possession of someone s freedom and the right to choose and read is essential, therefore the banning of particular books, to me, is nonsense. However, it is understandable that many books consist of uncomfortable explicit content which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Clearly, it can be seen how easily the antagonism developed into an irreparable situation. Therefore, allow me to affirm how books should not have the option of being banned to avoid predicaments likewise. In the end, I find books to be a valuable source of information and beliefs that cannot, and should not, be bound by the chains of selfishness. Furthermore, people are privileged to read and express their thoughts in freedom. • 12. Theme Of Fabliau In The Canterbury Tales A fabliau is aptly categorized as a scandalous tale meant to satirize the bourgeois through the depiction of bourgeois characters. This is the genre Chaucer writes The Miller s Tale, from his The Canterbury Tales, in so he can distinguish the social class levels of the people on the pilgrimage. Chaucer shows us the differences by paralleling then transforming certain aspects of this fabliau with the same elements of the chivalric romanceof the Knight s Tale. Fabliaux are salacious tales driven by elements such as deception to acquire money or possessions, to get sexual gratification, or to get revenge on somebody for a past wrong. The fabliau hinges upon an elaborate trick, set up with huge care in the story, contains the climax of the tale, and ends abruptly as the story itself ends. It is actually unknown whether the initial purpose of such a tale was for the nobility to mock the non aristocrats with whom they competed for status, or whether the bourgeois told fabliaux as an act of self mockery, to show how much the middle class has risen. In the Miller s prologue, we can infer that the Host wants the chronology of the storytelling to follow the levels of class; thus the reason why he solicits the Monk to tell a story after the noble Knight. The Host wants the Monk repay the Knight a little for his tale, but the inebriated Miller volunteers to pay the Knight his wages. (Kouzes Posner, 94) As successful as Steve Jobs appears to be, there are some leadership qualities that need to be improved. One such behavior would be model the way (Kouzes Posner, 45) Steve Jobs has not established principles concerning the way people should be treated, nor does Jobs create standards of excellence as a leadership example for others to follow. In fact, this leader has been known to scream at employees to the point of hyperventilation. (Pomiewozik, 2000) This leader has also been guilty of failing to follow through on promises and commitments. As an employer, Jobs was obligated to compensate employees for work as agreed upon in the job contract. That obligation to compensate employees was not followed through when Jobs fired a P.R. consultant and refused to pay the employee for completed work. (Pomiewozik, 2000) The demeaning attitude of this leader should not serve as an example for employees. • 28. O Pioneers By Willa Cather O Pioneers by Willa Cather follows a group of frontiersmen trying to survive in the harsh conditions of the untamed west. The story follows the Bergsons, but more descriptively, the main character, a girl named Alexandra Bergson. Throughout the story, Alexandra grows up to her full potential and we are able to see her character just as rich and as mesmerizing as Willa hoped to achieve. This is the character that Willa decides to revolve her story around and makes the reader fully understand who the novelis truly about. Using this assumption, readers can conclude that O Pioneers derives from Willa s real life experiences especially when dealing with her love life. At the very beginning of the novel, Alexandra was given a huge responsibility. With her father passing away it was up to her to inherit the farm and make it thrive. She was young, but very determined and in that introspect, she was able to make the farm a huge success. For the time period, this achievement was very difficult to obtain especially for a woman. Both face to face interaction and social networking sites (including Myspace, Twitter, and Facebook) are forms of staying in contact with friends and family. While Nora from Turkle s Alone together communicates her engagement and wedding date via email to her closest friends and family, she could have easily announced it face to face, at a party or through a Facebook event. While there are many ways of communicating information, the authenticity of these interactions as well as its importance is up for debate. (Slater, pages 1 3) The dramatic nature of these temporary changes is in fact what is most troubling. In Who Holds the Clicker, Heath performs electrode surgery on a homosexual man. By firing electrodes in his pleasure center while having him watch movies of heterosexual encounters, he is able to turn said man (identified as B 19) into a newly made man (Slater, pages 1)within 17 days. Although the electrode surgery on the homosexual man was supposed to be a good deed, in actuality the homosexual man did not conserve his individuality. • 30. The Issue Of Abortion And Abortion Abortion is one of the most debatable and controversial issues that exists in our society. An abortion is a medical procedure that terminates a pregnancy before 24 weeks. People who call themselves Pro Life feel that it is the government s responsibility to preserve all life, regardless of concerns for the pregnant woman s health, or for the quality of the life of the child. The Pro Choice argument feels that a woman should have the choice when it comes to what they wish to do with their own reproductive organs. There s many arguments regarding abortions. One of many is that adoption is a viable alternative to abortion. This statement implies that the only reason a woman would want to get an abortion is to avoid raising a child, and that isn t the case. Depending on the circumstances, the mere act of having a child in a hospital can cost between $3,000 and $37,000 in the United States. Giving birth is dangerous, too: In the United States, pregnancy complications are the sixth most common cause of death for women between the ages of 20 and 34. Another misconception often thought about abortions is If a woman has sex, she has to pay the consequences. Too many women have abortions for their own convenience or on impulse. Pro Life activists leave no room for the grey area, which is unfair. Did you know over 2 thirds of women who have abortions were on birth control or using protection. And what about the women who are abstinent but were raped or victim to incest. I believe ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Russell On Denoting On Denoting and Definite Descriptions: Russell s Puzzle Solutions In his work, On Denoting , Bertrand Russell proposes a theory of denoting and descriptions, which he summarizes as follows: Everything, nothing, and something, are not assumed to have any meaning in isolation, but a meaning is assigned to every proposition in which they occur. This is the principle of the theory of denoting I wish to advocate: that denoting phrases never have any meaning in themselves, but that every proposition in whose verbal expression they occur has a meaning. (480) Russell contends that the difficulties concerning denoting are [...] all the result of a wrong analysis of propositions whose verbal expressions contain denoting phrases (480). In... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In considering this puzzle, Russell first introduces the principle of the indiscernibility of identicals (hereafter the indiscernibility principle), which states that [i]f a is identical to b, whatever is true of the one is true of the other, and either may be substituted for the other in any proposition without altering the truth or falsehood of that proposition (485). That is, two identical entities can be used interchangeably in any statement without altering the truth value of the statement in question. Russell then sets forth the proposition George VI wished to know whether Scott was the author of Waverly and concludes that, since Scott was in fact the author of Waverly, one can replace the author of Waverly with Scott and thereby prove that George VI wished to know whether Scott was Scott (485). Under the indiscernibility principle, both propositions are true since the terms the author of Waverly and Scott are identical and thus wholly substitutable for one another. However, while Russell finds the first proposition to be true ( George VI wished to know whether Scott was the author of Waverly ), Russell concludes that the second proposition, George VI wished to know whether Scott was Scott , is false due to the fact that an interest in the law of identity can hardly be attributed to George VI (485). The Pastor And Teacher As A Gift And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ... (Ephesians 4:11 12). This passage in Ephesians establishes the ability to be a pastor and teacher as a gift. The pastoris often looked at as the face of a local church. This is evidenced by the fact that when people are discussing a church, someone will almost certainly ask the question: Who is the pastor of that church? . The pastor plays an important part in a local church. He is generally looked to as the leader, the head teacher, and the lead counselor to a specific local assembly. But a pastor s not just the leader of a local church. It s important to examine how the Bibledefines a pastor. The word used for pastor in Ephesians 4 literally means shepherd. The same word is used in 1 Peter 5 when Peter instructs the elders to shepherd the flock of God. For this reason, we can know that role of elder and overseer are synonymous with pastor. They are interchangeable terms. Elders were appointed by apostles to be in charge of a local church (Acts 14:23). This is what Jesus meant when he told Peter to shepherd My sheep (John 21:16). Shepherds, naturally, were in charge of the sheep they tended. They feed them, guide them, care for, and retrieve their sheep. Political, Religious, And Social Institutions Group B Question 4 Harriett Martineau can be considered the first sociologist, she not only influenced Marx s work on the political economy, but brought positivism to the English speaking world. Martineau was the first to collect data through observation, and speak for and to the people. Martineau s reflections on Society in America, are prime examples of her sociological methods. Her ideas in this field were set out in her book How to Observe Morals and Manners. She believed that some very general social laws influence the life of any society. Martineau s main contribution to sociology was her claim that when studying society, one has to focus on all aspects of it. She emphasized the importance of examining political, religious, and social institutions. Martineau believed that by studying society in this way, one could infer why inequality existed. She also was the first to create a systematic method of qualitative data; through observation. Using qualitative data is tremendously important because one is able to examine complex questions that can be difficult with quantitative methods, it also allows for more in depth examination of a subject. Harriett Martineau also made economic and social ideas and options understandable to the ordinary people. Harriet had the gift of explaining difficult ideas.
