History of Jamaican Music
The history of Jamaican music is inextricably intertwined with the history of the Jamaican people.
Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean, and was initially populated by the Arawak
people. Christopher Columbus discovered the island on his second voyage to the Americas, and it
was settled first by Spanish colonists, and later by English colonists. (Megan, R.)
Jamaicans possess a musical heritage that comes from their African and European roots. Reggae
music is Jamaica s best sound. These thumping sounds are rich and infectious and encompass

Rapping is, in fact, a method of creative expression. The thought that young people can participate
in this form of creativity seems to have helped the phenomenal growth of this genre of music and
expression. Dancehall is an expressive routine that includes songs, poetry, films and fashion. This
art form gives young people the outlet of expressing themselves creatively. (Franksterr)
This is old time story telling in song and music. It combines African and latin rhythm, with anglo
folksongs...and was very popular during the 1940s and 1950s. Today it is used mainly to
entertain visitors coming to the island...giving them a taste of what Jamaican music was like in
the past. Listen to it and you will most certainly feel the spirit of the old days. The stories it tell
are usually simple and funny everyday happenings in Jamaican life. The instruments are also very
simple a gourd shaker, a upright bass, rumba box, fiddle, mandolin, ukulele, or a trumpet. My
American friends tend to hang around it for a bit and find themselves certainly laughing and
moving to the beat. Ska is simply mento music moving to the next stage! Musicians began playing
around with the music adding a little calypso here and there...a little American jazz, some rhythm
amp; blues...and before you know it ska popped out! This new rythm took the 1960 s by
storm...until The rude boys of the time slowed the pace a bit, added a steady rock beat...to

Stereotyping In Sports
Highly hyped teams will often have shorter odds mainly due to the fact so many people are
betting on them, but if you are a veteran gambler, you will know that the odds a bookie gives and
the hype surrounding a team is not a key indicator of success. Here are five questions you should
ask yourself prior to placing mobile betting soccer bets on hyped teams (especially if you are
planning to stake a lot of money).
Spend Some Time Watching Their Older Matches
You can often pull up older soccer games on the Internet. It is worth having a watch to see how
well they fair. Is the hype justified based on their in game play? When you watch their matches, are
you seeing things that justify the hype the team are receiving? Remember that some teams ... Show

They may have entered the pitch with their heads held high, but it only takes a few dangerous
shots from the opposing team to quash their moral and enthusiasm. The hyped team may have been
expecting an easier game than the one they are getting. If you see the opposing team continue to
apply pressure, you could do worse than place an in play bet on the opposing team.
Question 5 Is The Opposing Team Overdue A Dramatic Win?
If you watch a lot of team sports, be it basketball, hockey, rugby, football, or whatever, you will
notice that some teams seem to pull off dramatic comebacks when nobody expects them.
A team can start with pre season games and start their season with a terrible run, and then out of
nowhere they suddenly start winning relentlessly. Do not underestimate the potential of the
opposing team because of their track record. In addition, do not underestimate them because the
hyped team is drawing all the attention. As a long time soccer watcher, you should know that some
teams can suddenly become fantastic overnight. It even happens in games sometimes. There are
times when a team is a mess on the pitch, and then suddenly pulls it together for no

Social Construction Of Childhood In The Middle Ages
Through looking on different cultures it seems that childhood is definitely a social construction.
But a better way of trying to find out if it is or not is through looking back in time. Until the end
of the Middle Ages, children in the West were often seen as miniature versions of adult. Their
clothes and their bodily proportions were the same as those of adults. The main reason why they
were classed as miniature adults was because they were expected to participate in all aspects of
social life alongside their parents. Special protection and treatment did not exist at this time.
Children could be punished and frequently were, for social transgressions with the same severity
that adults were.
Families of the 1600s and 1700s may have valued children for their role in inheritance, but children
clearly didn t cause the same kind of sentiment that they cause from adults today.
(Aries, 1962). This rather unsentimental treatment of children was probably something to o with
demographic realities such as fatal disease. In the Middle Ages ... Show more content on

They were seen as innocent and in need of protection, the same as we see them today. Consequently,
tough they were viewed as weak and vulnerable. Along with the notion of protection came the
notion of discipline, as parents taught their children to avoid any temptations of their social world.
Social institutions have influenced definitions of childhood throughout history. Until the late 18th
century, fro instance, child labour was commonly practiced and accepted (Archer, 1985). Still is
in some cultures. In the early 19th century, half of all workers in northern factories were children,
all under the age of just eleven (Coontz, 1992). Children worked as long and as hard as adults,
sometimes even harder. Due to their small size, they were sometimes given difficult and hazardous
jobs, such as cleaning out the insides of narrow factory

Pho History
Not everyone know how to make Pho noodle soup but everyone probably know of Pho or heard
of Pho somewhere in their life. The authentic Pho is a Vietnamese noodle soup consisting of white
long flat sticky rice noodle, beef broth soup, and it usually served with sprouts, basil, culantro,
cilantro, white onion, green onion, lime, and other extras on the side such as spiracha hot chili and
hoisin sauce so that you can season the soupto your own taste. But who actually have tried the best
Pho noodle soup? Probably not many people have tried a bowl of Pho noodle soup that taste so
delicious, savory and unforgettable, unless they have a chance to travel to Vietnam where Pho is

Who Is Catherine The Great
Biography of Catherine the Great
One of the most interesting, hard working and powerful people to grace the pages of history
during the eighteenth century was Catherine II, Empress of Russia. Historians have not always
been so kind to her memory, and all too often one reads accounts of her private life, ignoring her
many achievements. The stories of her love affairs have been overly misinterpreted and can be
traced to a handful of French writers in the years immediately after Catherine s death, when
Republican France was fighting for its life against a coalition that included Russia.
Catherine was born Sophia Augusta Frederika of Anhalt Zerbst on April 21, 1729 in Stettin, then
Germany, now Poland. Her father, Prince Christian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was at this time that Catherine, who had never felt more isolated, wrote: I should have loved
my new husband, if only he had been willing or able to be in the least lovable. But in the first
days of my marriage, I made some cruel reflections about him. I said to myself: If you love this
man, you will be the most wretched creature on Earth. Watch your step, so far as affection for this
gentleman is concerned, think of yourself, Madame. The young couple settled down, but the
marriage was a miserable failure.
Catherine was disappointed with her marriage, but decided to stick it out and concentrate on
building herself a powerful group of allies. Catherine occupied herself with reading everything she
could lay her hands on. She discovered satisfaction in the works of Plato and Voltaire. Her interest
in the intellect caused an even greater distance between Peter and herself. The years passed and
there was still no heir in sight.
This of course irritated the Empress who wanted to secure a powerful dynasty, and could not do so
without the presence of a male heir. She thought it must be Catherine s fault because she was not
attracted to her husband. However, it was Peter that was not able to produce a male son, so
Elizabeth permitted an affair between Catherine and a Russian military officer named Serge
Saltykov. Catherine finally gave birth to a son, whom the Empress named Paul, on September 20,
1754. Peter accepted it as his

Alexsandro Palombo s Interpretation Of The Movie Mask
I have decided to compare a movie by the name of Mask, Alexsandro Palombo s interpretation of
Disney princesses with disabilities, and a photo of America s Next Disabled Top Models. The
reason for choosing these for comparison is because I believe at first glance they might portray
a certain feeling but as you look deeper the real (another) meaning presents itself. The movie
Mask was released in 1985 and is based on a true story. It is about a boy (Rocky) with a bone
disorder called craniodiaphyseal dysplasia. In the movie Rocky wants to go to high school

The life of Malcolm X, who was murdered forty years ago this month, spanned a trajectory from
oppression and victimization to inchoate rebellion and revolutionary autonomy. His was a voyage
from resistance to an informed radicalism. It was a journey from which he ultimately gathered
political and historical insight which, combined with his tools of persuasion and skills at

Comparing US And European Democracies
1. Thoroughly explain what a welfare state is.
1.) Welfare State is a system whereby the government undertakes to protect the health and well
being of its people, especially those in financial or social need, by means of grants, pensions, and
other benefits. In this world not everybody can be rich and successful, and thus some people have
to work harder earning lower income to at least have a decent life. There are a lot of welfare
programs that help people that are in need provided by the government. For example, the
government helps the low income students by helping them pay for tuition and books with FAFSA
2. Compare and contrast the US welfare state to European Democracies (IE, size, benefits, etc).
2.) Comparing US Welfare state to the European Democracies can a little difficult. From the
example I made in the last paragraph, it would not apply in Europe because college is tuition free,
which is totally different from the US. One of the main reasons Europe has more welfare state is
because their taxes are much more higher, and thus the government has more money to help their
people. Another difference is the budget spending, which is more dedicated to welfare state rather
than the military like in the US. The budget size and proportional spending are totally different in
the US and Europe.
3. Aside from a higher tax ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So in general, the government should provide a minimum standard of living whenever possible. A
solution for this problem could be to raise the taxes for the wealthy people in order to help the
poor, or there could be new foundations that asks the wealthiest people to make voluntary
donations. I think rich people would rather donate money than have money taken away, so creating
a way to motivate them to donate money to the government should be very important. Like I said
before, no one should be suffering, if there is wealthy people in the

The Applicability Of The Ib Risk Assessment Tool In Iran...
ICS is the first longitudinal population based study, primarily designed to develop a CVD risk
assessment tool (PARS) in Iran and EMR. ICS is being organized in three geographic areas with
a large urban and rural population [14]. We developed the PARS as a new CVD risk prediction
tool in Iran, in preparation for a major change in national policy by identifying the patients at high
risk of CVD.
Although Framingham prediction algorithms have been comprehensively used in the United States
and other countries [29 31], they consist of white middleclass individuals; therefore, there are
concerns about the generalization of their findings to other populations and societies particularly in
low and middle income countries[14]. The limitations for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

By calculating total CV risk, including the 10 year risk of fatal or non fatal myocardial infarction,
unstable angina, sudden cardiac death, and fatal or non fatal stroke, we anticipate to provide a
better risk estimate. Accordingly, WHO and current stress practice guidelines prefer to consider the
total risk in making decisions about treatment [1, 26, 41, 42].
Based on a large Iranian representative population, we created a PARS charts. The PARS charts
are user friendly and color coded. Furthermore, using a 6 color gradient from brown as the highest
risk to green as the lowest probability of CVD event help not only the Physicians but also the
individuals to see their position on the chart [43].
It is known that diabetes is positively associated with the CVD risk. One of the limitations of the
Framingham risk score is the small number of diabetic people in a cohort of 5573 individuals
(4%) and also the diabetes definition was based on a random blood glucose concentration 9
mmol/L or the use of anti glycemic treatment. Hence, the accuracy of the Framingham risk score
for CV risk assessment in diabetic patients has been addressed in previous studies [44]. The most
widely used risk score in the European countries, SCORE [6], also lacks the risk prediction power
of diabetes because of the

Endotherm
Endotherm refers to animals that adjust core temperature by internal corrective mechanism such as
humans. Most of the endotherm keep their body temperature around 35В°C to 40В°C. The body
temperature is controlled by the thermoregulatory centre in the hypothalamus. The temperature
regulating centers are discovered in the preoptic area situated in the anterior portion of the
hypothalamus. The function of this area is to receive information from temperaturereceptors located
in the skin, mucous membranes and also from the central thermoreceptors that monitor the
temperature of bloodthat pass through the brain. The hypothalamic thermostat works with other
areas of the brain to maintain the core temperature. When human facing cold weather, our skin
temperature drops. This stimulates skin cold receptors. When The thermoregulatory centre is

Essay on Gloria Naylor s Mama Day
Gloria Naylor s Mama Day
It is impossible to interpret Gloria Naylor s 1988 novel, Mama Day, in one way. There are
multiple standpoints that a reader can take in explaining various events that occur throughout the
book, as well as different ways that the characters in the book interpret these events. The author
never fully clarifies many questions that the story generates so as to leave the readers with the
opportunity to answer them based on their own personal experiences and beliefs. The multiplicity
of perspectives in Gloria Naylor s Mama Day is embodied in the legend of Sapphira Wade and the
dynamics between logic and the supernatural and between George and Cocoa.

The descendents of Sapphira all received deeds to pieces of land in Willow Springs in 1823. How
the descendants of a slave woman came to inherit the land of slave owner is unclear because
different interpretations of the event that occurred in 1823 seem to have been developed from
generation to generation. For instance, some say Sapphira smothered Bascombe Wade in his
very bed, while others say she persuaded Bascombe Wade in a thousand days to deed all his
slaves every inch of land in Willow Springs and poisoned him for his trouble (Naylor 3). These
different interpretations apparently lead to the development to the use of the phrase 18 23 as a
slang term. For some, the phrase seems to represent death and destruction whereas others use it
synonymously with deception. But no matter what actually happened in 1823, the fact that so
many views are accepted by the community conveys to the reader the importance of open
mindedness in reading the book. Naylor continues to suggest the significance of open mindedness
by providing the reader with the opportunity to choose more than one way to explain Mama Day

Although it is a ghost story, A Christmas Carol is an uplifting tale. To what extent do you agree?
A Christmas carol by Charles Dickens is a significant novella written in the Victorian era. The
protagonist Ebenezer Scrooge is used to demonstrate the upper class society and their attitude

faced by the poor with a heart felt sentimental celebration of the Christmas season. The novella
contains a dramatic and comic element as well as a deep felt moral theme. The text promotes the
values of Ebenezer Scrooge, delving into his past, present and supposed future as well as

The author illustrates that Scrooge who is depicted as hard and sharp as a flint is a greedy miser
whom is so old and coldhearted that nothing other than his profits will phase him. Dickens uses
the scene when the ghost of Christmas past, a child like old man uses flashbacks to show Scrooge
of the memories he once made to show the nature of the much younger character. This is evident
when Fan a little girl much younger than Scrooge had brought out the affection of her older brother
as they planned to be together all the Christmas long, and have the merriest time in all the world.
What is important about this example is not just that it shows the compassion Scrooge once felt but
also that Scrooge is not truly crooked and horrible to the core establishing the uplifting and
inspiring feeling to readers.
The title of the novella, A Christmas Carol, is immediately recognized by the reader as hardly
appropriate for the first stave. Stave one does not resemble the happy and cheerful world of
Christmas trees and presents, but instead the reader is exposed to, what can only be described as,
ghost story features. Ghost stories are meant to be scary, typically the ghosts that appear in this
genre bring nothing but evil, but in this

Self-Destruction In Stephen Crane s Untitled
There is a strain between what is good for the body and the reality of human nature. Individuals
know mistakes will occur, but they do not understand how to nurture themselves. Because of this
reality, people tear themselves apart, thinking it is the reasonable reaction. In Stephen Crane s
poem, Untitled, symbolism and religious indicators illustrate the theme of self betrayal.
Firstly, nature is typically fruitful; however, a desert is the antipode of this definition. Most plants
cannot grow in the desert climate, creating a barren, unwelcoming environment; this is where
Stephen Crane places his poem. The naked, bestial (2) creature the narrator sees is the only other
living object in this desert, representing self destruction. Innate in one s being, self destruction
sucks dry a once blossoming environment, turning oneself into a hell or purgatory like habitat. Life
is difficult, yet self destruction makes one bitter. The heart is bitter bitter, (7) says the creature.
Although a typical human wouldn t know what a heart tastes like, the fact it is described as bitter
puts the reader off. Rather ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Given the creature is self destruction, the presence of the narrator illustrates one s contentment in
giving in to the process. Using the phrase my heart (10) creates the connection between the
individual and the destruction. Without the connection, one could distance oneselves from their
exterior and their interior. One can have power over this self hatred; however, I is simply
watching as the creature ruins the core of the body. The narrator tries to appeal to the creature by
calling it friend, (6) but this is not enough for it to stop eating the heart. Instead, the individual
makes small talk. In a way, this appeal demonstrates one s offering of self care. One s heart being
the fruit of one s labor; the narrator gives up. Primal and controlled beasts become one with the last

U.s. Practitioners And Acupuncture Practitioners
U.S. Practitioners primarily believe in physical medicine, tests, and results, not in medical
treatments that can t be measured. With the sudden appearance of acupuncture, biomedicine
practitioners were not given time to study the new healing method, and were also unconscious in
what way to explain how the new field actually worked. For that same reason, we do not see
biomedicine practitioners and acupuncture practitioners working together, in the same type of
settings. One medical treatment is commonly sided with medicine, while the other is commonly
based on a more natural way of healing. Even though it took years for acupuncture to actually
become acknowledged in the Unites States, it has become one of the most common healing
methods that we see today. Pamela Tzu Kemp, who is a Licensed Acupuncturists and herbalist in
Carlsbad California, acknowledge that she does not interfere with western medicine, she actually
supports it. Many illnesses can be cured with acupuncture, but there are certain ones that require
medical attention. An example was a person with a blood clot. Blood clots cannot be dealt with
acupuncture; it can actually worsen a person s condition, making the situation worse till the point of
death. Acupuncture is meant to help the blood flow on the body, and if a blood clot is treated using
this healing method, it could eventually just transfer the blood clot into a different location within
the body. When one of her patients had this problem, she was not

Edward Scissorhands Character Analysis
Individuality can be an admired gift, but it is often buried under society s illogically perfect
expectations. The famous film director, Tim Burton, known for directing movies such as Edward
Scissorhands and Alice in Wonderland, proves in several thrilling adventures. He shows that
uniqueness is a strength, not a weakness, even if it means being an outcast or misfit. Through two
of his films, Miss Peregrine s Home for Peculiar Children and Edward Scissorhands, showcases the
message of identity is preferable to conformity.
An outcast is a perfect example of identity. Even if they try, they never truly fit in. Sometimes it
can be because of an awkward nature or because they are given the title goodie two shoes . But

Edward s actions speak very loudly, louder than his odd hands, dark clothing, or strange/awkward
behaviors. The show of loyalty proves Burton s message of identity. This message is also
showcased in the movie Miss Peregrine s Home for Peculiar Children. Basically, all of the
Peculiars are the outcasts of the film. When Jake first enters the loop and meets Miss Peregrine,
she says a quote that beautifully supports the message. As Miss Peregrine explains to Jake what
Peculiars are, she says, We are what s known in common towns as peculiar. Because our abilities
don t fit in the outside world, we live in places like this where no one can find us. Miss Peregrine.
This quote helps to show the audience that the misfits couldn t fit in, but as the movie continues,
the peculiars prove themselves as brave, merciful people with strong characters. In contrast, the
times we do get to see the townspeople, they seem to be reckless, moody, unstable people. The
words both sets of characters say shows just how different they are and just how much of a good
thing being an outcast can be.
The contrasting settings between the two main different places also helps to accent the difference
between individuality and conformity. Typically, in each of Burton s films, there is a dark, eerie
setting, and a bright, vivid setting. The example of vivid versus eerie settings

Health Benefits And The Business Aspects Of The Beloved...
Coffee
My topic of choice is coffee. I personally drink a large amount of it everyday. I spent a lot of time
trying to figure out what I wanted my topic to be. Coffee is something I enjoy everyday and am
curiosity about. At one time I wanted to open my own coffee shop. That dream is dead, but I still
enjoy the beverage, often in a hip, public place surrounded by friends. I believe this topic will
keep me focused and interested and enlighten me on current arguments and facts. I am interested in
the health benefits and the business aspects of the beloved brew. I had an intention at one time of
pursuing nutrition as a degree, so health information intrigues me. Currently, I am considering
business as a degree plan. Researching the business aspect may help prepare me for that future
and give me a glimpse at what business entails. On a humorous note, I know I will need large
doses of caffeine to make it through my college career, so I would like to know my limits.
I have read many times over the last few years that coffee is good for you. Others tell me often that
it is not, to which I tell them it is, based on material I have read, but not researched. I do not recall
much material stating that it is bad, but I know it is out there. Part of my research paper will be in
pursuit of finding the facts about the health benefits and harms of the brew. From my limited
reading in the past, I have learned that it naturally contains antioxidants that fight free radicals in

The Ramayana Of Valmiki And Sita Sings The Blues
The Ramayana of Valmiki and Sita Sings the Blues
The epic story of Rama and Sita, as portrayed by Valmiki s Ramayana and the modern day film
Sita sings the Blues are two different versions of the same story which contain several contrasts as
well as similarities. The Ramayana is the ancient version which was written by a sage named
Valmiki in 550 B.C.E, featuring a love story between an ideal prince and an ideal woman. It
outlines the adventures of Rama in his journey to find his abducted wife Sita. Rama is portrayed as
an avatar, being the eighth incarnation of one of the Hindu gods Vishnu, while Sita is representing
Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of light. The modern day version of the Ramayana is seen in Sita
Sings the Blues, where the animator Nina Paley is relating her love story to that of Sita s
predicament. This paper will compare and contrast the epic story of Valmiki s Ramayana and Sita
Sings the Blues in the quest for power, honor, faithfulness and the conflict between good and evil.
The author Valmiki in Ramayana discussed in detail human relationships, such as those between
husband and wife, parents and children, siblings, rulers, and the ruled as shown in the story. It is
often referred to as a holy text as well as a guide to social practices and attitudes. Nina, the
animator of the film, Sita Sings the Blues, was seen reading the Ramayana constantly because it
provided some sort of comfort to her. In the Ramayana, paragraph one, it says It is a heroic epic

Jewish Massacre In Russian Pogroms
In 1881 a Jewish massacre occurred in Russia known as the pogroms, which is an organized
massacre of a culture group. The start of the pogroms was after Tsar Alexander II, the ruler of
Russia, was killed in 1881 and it was suspected that the murderer was a Jewish man. (Antin 72)
For Russia to get back, they placed all the blame on the Jewish people and the only way to get
revenge was to kill each and every person who identified with the Jewish religion. In this paper
my goal is to explain what the pogroms are, the major events that occurred in this time period,
and what was learned from this time in history. As Karl Max said, History repeats itself, first as a

(Doyle Pogroms of 1881) The plan to solve this issue was to use propaganda showing how bad the
Jews were and why they needed to be eliminated. The government s use of propaganda backfired
as violence arose. One example of this, is in Yelizavetgrad City. The rioting became so out of
control that the army had to get involved to break up the fighting. (Doyle Pogroms of 1881)
While, the Russians believed that using military force would stop the people and calm them
down just the opposite had occurred. People began becoming more violent and more people
joined in the rioting. This was seen ten days later in the city of Kiev, an attack that lasted for over
three years. (Modern Jewish History) In this three year time span over 250 attacks occurred around
Russia and the citizens of Russia followed the government s lead as they were adjusting to their
new government. (Parkansky 32) To revenge his brother s death Tsar Alexander III decided to
pass harsher laws on the Jews. This is when he passed the May Laws in 1882. The May Laws
took almost all rights away from the Jewish people. Some of the laws were that only ten percent
of Jewish students could attend college, Jews could not trade on Sundays, and they also had to
move away from their local villages and towns. (Joyce 19th Century Russian Pogroms) The
overall plan Alexander III had failed as over two million Jews left Russia to go to America and the
two thirds of the population that stayed in Russia were very influential to taking down Czarist

Handguns in Households with Children Essay
Handguns in Households with Children
Guns in America are a problem as bad as the drug problem: 43% of households that have children
have handguns in them; 10 children die every day from handguns, approximately one every 2 ВЅ
hours. That is the same of a classroom of children every two days. Parents do not realize that
children get the physical capacity to reach and discharge a firearm long before the ability to
understand the potential consequences of these actions. Parents who insist on keeping guns in the
home should be urged strongly to store their firearms unloaded and locked in a secure place.
Actions like these will reduce the probability of children being killed by a firearm. The presence of

Plainly speaking, if guns were not so readily available, the number of children suicides in America
would decrease significantly.
The number of American citizens concerned with children gun violence is rapidly increasing.
Nearly a million U.S. students took guns to school during 1998. It is important to note that
many school shootings are committed by children who have stolen their parents legally owned
guns. Columbine is just one example of what can happen. Over the two years ending June 30,
1999, violence in and around schools happened in 25 states resulting in 105 deaths. Nearly two
thirds of the victims were primary and secondary schools students, another 11 percent were
teachers or staff, and the remainders were community members slain on school property.
Firearms were used in 75 percent of these deaths. For example, take the case of a nine year old
girl who took a Glock semiautomatic pistol to school. The girl, who told officials she found the
gun in an unlocked drawer in her mother s bedroom, said she wanted it for protection against gang
Candamo3
members who had threatened her at school a week ago. Therefore, rather than relying on teaching
children principles of a gun safety, parents should learn how to more constantly prevent firearm
injuries. Anticipatory guidance is vital to give parents the information that they need to make smart
choices for themselves and their

The Psychology Of Addictions Of Freud And Halsted
Addictions are when a person cannot control their actions or urges when dealing with the object of
their addiction.
Addictions are sometimes formed from habits. For example, if you take a drug for a medical
condition then you may develop an addiction to the drug.
Sigmund Freud, born 1856 and William Halsted, born 1852, are considered two main contributors
to the psychology of addictions. The 1880s is when Freud and Halsted s experimentation with
cocaine started, as they were unaware that cocaine is extremely addictive, they became addicted to
it themselves.
One of the effects of being addicted to something is tolerance. Tolerance occurs when, after some
time taking a drug, your body becomes desensitized to it, making it so more is necessary

Violent Video Games Do Not Cause Gun Violence
The killings in Marshall County High School, Kentucky. The slaughters in Marjory Stoneman
Douglas High School, Florida. The shootings in Great Mills High School, Maryland. All of these
tragedies are results of gun violence. But gun violence cannot just occur out of nowhere; there has
to be a cause. Many people believe that violent video games are the direct cause of abusing the
power of guns. But research has proven that this is not true; violent video games do not cause the
actual school shootings.
In Japan, statistics show that 90% of all children ages 10 14 have video games in their houses. In
America, the statistics are the same, 90% of all children play video games [PDF]. Similarly, 95%

Preserving Cut Flowers with Different Solutions
Objective:
The experiment aims to investigate how the cut Gerbera could be extended the life by adding a
series of solutions, and to account for the underlying reasons for the extension. It also provides
insight into the effectiveness of different flower foods and the role of bleach in the whole system.
Abstract:
Six Cut flowers (Number. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, and 8) were placed in different vases from 10th March
2011 to 25th March 2011. Solution 1 and 2 which contained water and water mix bleach can last
for at least 8 days. Solution 5 and 6 which contained lemon juice and sugar were tending to last for
longer for 10 days or more. Solution 7 and 8 can only last for 4 5 days since Coca Cola, bleach and
warm water were added.
Introduction: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The results revealed that solution 5 which was the mix of lemon juice and sugar allowed the
flower to have the longest lifespan, while solution 7 which was the mix of Coca Cola and water,
was the first to wilt.
Bleach
The main chemical component of bleach is Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCI), which can unravel the
bacterial protein chains so that it inhibits the growth of bacterial in the solution. The solutions
(Solution 2, 6, 8) containing bleach could at least survive for 5 days. However, bleach contains
toxic gas which is harmful for organism as well; therefore, the solutions 2, 6, 8 were not the one
lasted for the longest period when compared with other solutions.
Fresh lemon juice
Lemon juice contains citric acid and niacin, which enhance the water permeability of the gerbera s
stem and kill the germs effectively. Gerbera of solution 5 had the longest lifespan since the solution
contained lemon juice that successfully killed the germs and helped improve the water
permeability. Lemon juice is not harmful for the flowers and thus, solution 5 and 6 which contained
lemon juice can have the longest lifetime.
Sugar
Sugar nourishes the flowers, helps blooms last longer. For solution 5 and 6, a table spoon of
sugar was added. Solution 5 can last the longest since sugar and lemon juice were added, while
sugar provided food sources to gerbera and lemon juice helped kill the bacteria. Although

Fixed Cost On the other hand Dr. Pepper Snapple Group does have a large number of fixed cost.
Fixed costs are cost that are constant and must be paid no matter what level of the activity is

The Photography Of Caitlyn Hatch
Caitlyn Hatch is a twenty year old student from Amherst, Massachusetts, who spends her
weekends roaming abandoned buildings all over the western part of the state. What she does in
these buildings is take photographs, however, she has not always been interested in the medium.
Photography had never been her first choice for what she would possibly study at university, and
she never imagined it as being something she would want to pursue professionally. Originally, she
was intent on being a graphic designer. She had begun to play around with an online photoshop
app, editing pictures taken by other people and was sure graphic design was for her, that is, until
she got her first camera. She got her first camera at age fourteen for Christmas, one of the big black
Nikon digital cameras. While she had never seriously considered photographybefore, she began to
play around with her new camera. The novelty of it all coupled with the support of her father, who
himself was an amateur nature photographer throughout his twenties, started the fire in her to take
up this art and learn as much about it as she could. Her study of photography began when Caitlyn
signed up for a photo class elective during her second semester of ninth grade. Initially, this class
was not what she had expected, We [the students] didn t even get to do any actual photography at
first; for three weeks all we did was learn technical things about cameras. Eventually though, when
they did begin to start using

Managing Big Data Systems
Definite answers regarding how much usable data is actually being generated by city sized
populations, and best places to get it could be the subject of a future study, but social media
platforms may be the source most easily tapped into for this type of data. Employees of local IT
departments are in danger of having difficulties storing and processing data from social media
platforms to use as a foundation for aligning social networkanalysis with the systems . There is a
growing demand for those having the necessary skillsets to deal with big data. Local governments
(especially smaller sized ones) might have special difficulty acquiring these resources which
makes finding a comprehensive solution for combining big data , SNA, and GIS even more
difficult, as data manipulators are in short supply. A survey supporting a Public CIO Special Report
( The Trouble with Big Data Talent, 2013), finds that more than half of government agencies polled
were experiencing data related hiring difficulties meaning there is a shortage of individuals who
possess an engineering background, can model data mathematically and can contribute to
organizations effectively using data insights for decision making.
Using the Data
Using data mining techniques, such as graph mining and social network analysis on regional data
sources could contribute great insights and improve operations. Social networking analysis is the
study and analysis of networks involving social interaction. Types of

The Concepts Of Nature Vs Nurture
The concepts of Nature vs Nurture, are major concepts in social science. Nature is the hereditary
pattern of physical features in a human being s development. These features include, but are not
limited to, our personality, usual and unusual appearances and the general measurements of how
humans hold the attributes of being sociable, hostile behavior, their emotions, and the usage of
alcohol and drugs. On the other hand Nurture is slightly different. Nurture is the influence of the
environment that plays upon the behavior and characteristics in a human. The idea of nurture is
that humans will grow up to form their personality on the way they are raised and life experiences.
Culture is defined by the people in the environment, however, the environment helps shape and
form human personalities in order to forge a culture. Culture is created by religions/beliefs, clothing
/foods, language/social habits as well as the humanistic discipline; such as music, paintings,
literature, and many more. Culture is generated by humankind, because humans hold their belief
systems and patterns that was passed down by generations; by humans passing down what they
have learned from their families this begins to create a culture. Personality plays a central role in
both nature vs nurture and culture. Furthermore, personality is stated the total organization of
inherited and acquired characteristics of an individual as evidenced by the individual s behavior
(Hunt 119). Personality is either

American With Disabilities Act Into Law
More than fifty six million Americans have one or more physical disabilities. Many of these
individuals are physically able to partake in everyday activities, yet they are excluded from these
opportunities (Crockett). People with disabilities are intentionally isolated by society due to a
stereotypical assumption of their lack of abilities to participate and contribute (Harris 368). They
are viewed as objects of pity, who are unable to work, go to school, or live on their own (Crockett).
Ed Roberts, an individual with a disability, clearly states, [we] are considered the weakest, the
most helpless people in our society, [but] are the strongest, and will not tolerate segregation,
[and] will not tolerate a society which sees us as less than whole people (Laney 21). He wants to
reshape the image that society has on them and prove that people with disabilities are just as
capable as everyone else. George H.W. Bush signed the American with Disabilities Act into law
on July 26, 1990. (The Americans with Disabilities Act: A Brief overview). Bush knew that the
act was powerful in its simplicity and that it would ensure that people with disabilities [were]
given the basic guarantees for which they have worked so long and hard (Americans with
Disabilities Act, Medicine 3). The goal was to help people with disabilities live the American
Dream and be identified by their potential and not their inadequacies (Rodgers 2). Since the
Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into

Internet Privacy Essay
With the internet gaining such popularity, privacy has become a thing of the past. People have
come to accept that strangers can view personal information about them on social networks such as
facebook, and companies and the government are constantly viewing peoples activity online for a
variety of reasons. The government has attempted to help the consumer regain their privacy online
by passing the Consumer Internet Privacy Protection Act of 1997, although it is difficult to enforce
and has become outdated with the fast moving tendency of the constantly changing internet. Some
companies including yahoo and google have come under scrutiny about violating ... Show more

They also share personal information including email to several other websites, resulting in endless
spam. A study was done that proved at least 45% of the top 185 most visited websites are sharing
user information with another website and often, they share with at least four other websites. On
many websites, at the end of their privacy policy is a small, pre checked box that asks the user
whether this website can share your information with other websites. Many people don t even see
this box, and end up agreeing to it because it is so discreet and already checked off. Furthermore,
Online advertising is an enormous source of information collected about consumers, and serves as
an important lens to focus our understanding of data collection and use. (Harbour) These
companies use text files called cookies to save the pages you visit and information you like to
view, storing it right on your own computer (Lane). Most people don t realize what types and
amounts of information collected by internet businesses, or why it s commercially valuable. Data is
currency in the internet industry, and the greater amount of data, the greater potential for analysis
and profit. Companies have to stop collecting so much data about their consumers, as personal

Who Conquered The Aztecs
Today we conquered the Aztecs.
At first, I was so excited about traveling to Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital. This city is located on a
tiny island in the center of Lake Texcoco. When the other soldiers and I arrived there, we met the
Aztec people and learned a great deal about them. I learned what the life of an Aztec child was like.
The Aztec people believed that their children belonged to the gods from the day they were born.
The boys were taught to be warriors and the girls were taught how to do housework. Boys who
were rich attended school. It was also interesting to learn that the Aztecs have two calendars. One
calendar was for religious rituals; it had 260 days. The other was a seasonal calendar with 365 days.
They also had a writing

Photosynthesis Experiment With Spinach
Photosynthesis is the process in which plants use sunlight to create energy. Sunlight gets absorbed
into chlorophyll in the plant cells which then convert the light to energy. That energy helps with the
process of hydrolysis in breaking CO2 and water down. Through this breaking up, oxygen and
glucose are created. Photosynthesishas total of six stages, but those are broken up into two main
stages. The first stage is a light dependent reaction, which is when the energy from the sunlight is
taken and then converted by the chlorophyll molecules into stored energy. This reaction takes place
in the thylakoid membranes in the granum within the chloroplast ( Light Dependent ). In this
reaction, there is a transfer of electrons from water to CO2 which begins the creation of the
byproduct of oxygen. The sunlight gives a boost of energy to the chlorophyll which gets over the
activation barrier and makes the chlorophyll release an electron (Vidyasagar). Chlorophyll
molecules trap the light through pigments and absorb... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The test was to see if spinach leaves could go through a short photosynthesis cycle without CO2,
light, or both. This was done by using sodium bicarbonate and water to create CO2 in two of the
beakers. With two beakers with CO2 and two without CO2, the effect of CO2 on photosynthesis
could be observed. Because sunlight is important to photosynthesis, the other part of the
experiment was to observe the difference between the spinach disks when exposed to sunlight and
the spinach disks when exposed to only darkness. Because of the photosynthetic equation: 6 CO2
+ 6 H2O + sunlight в†’ C6H12O6 + 6 O2, changing the light and the CO2 would impact the
outcome of the process. This would leave the leaves at the bottom of the beaker as they would not
be able to float up without the product of oxygen pushing them

  • 2. History of Jamaican Music Crystal Hislop Research Paper: Final Submission History of Jamaican Music Contemporary History Professor: Sharon Rodriguez 2/19/12 History of Jamaican Music The history of Jamaican music is inextricably intertwined with the history of the Jamaican people. Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean, and was initially populated by the Arawak people. Christopher Columbus discovered the island on his second voyage to the Americas, and it was settled first by Spanish colonists, and later by English colonists. (Megan, R.) Jamaicans possess a musical heritage that comes from their African and European roots. Reggae music is Jamaica s best sound. These thumping sounds are rich and infectious and encompass expression ... (Franksterr) This is old time story telling in song and music. It combines African and latin rhythm, with anglo folksongs...and was very popular during the 1940s and 1950s. • 3. Stereotyping In Sports Highly hyped teams will often have shorter odds mainly due to the fact so many people are betting on them, but if you are a veteran gambler, you will know that the odds a bookie gives and the hype surrounding a team is not a key indicator of success. Here are five questions you should ask yourself prior to placing mobile betting soccer bets on hyped teams (especially if you are planning to stake a lot of money). Spend Some Time Watching Their Older Matches You can often pull up older soccer games on the Internet. It is worth having a watch to see how well they fair. Is the hype justified based on their in game play? When you watch their matches, are you seeing things that justify the hype the team are receiving? Remember that some teams ... The hyped team may have been expecting an easier game than the one they are getting. If you see the opposing team continue to apply pressure, you could do worse than place an in play bet on the opposing team. Question 5 Is The Opposing Team Overdue A Dramatic Win? If you watch a lot of team sports, be it basketball, hockey, rugby, football, or whatever, you will notice that some teams seem to pull off dramatic comebacks when nobody expects them. A team can start with pre season games and start their season with a terrible run, and then out of nowhere they suddenly start winning relentlessly. Do not underestimate the potential of the opposing team because of their track record. In addition, do not underestimate them because the hyped team is drawing all the attention. As a long time soccer watcher, you should know that some teams can suddenly become fantastic overnight. It even happens in games sometimes. • 4. Social Construction Of Childhood In The Middle Ages Through looking on different cultures it seems that childhood is definitely a social construction. But a better way of trying to find out if it is or not is through looking back in time. Until the end of the Middle Ages, children in the West were often seen as miniature versions of adult. Their clothes and their bodily proportions were the same as those of adults. The main reason why they were classed as miniature adults was because they were expected to participate in all aspects of social life alongside their parents. Special protection and treatment did not exist at this time. Children could be punished and frequently were, for social transgressions with the same severity that adults were. Families of the 1600s and 1700s may have valued children for their role in inheritance, but children clearly didn t cause the same kind of sentiment that they cause from adults today. (Aries, 1962). This rather unsentimental treatment of children was probably something to o with demographic realities such as fatal disease. In the Middle Ages ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They were seen as innocent and in need of protection, the same as we see them today. Consequently, tough they were viewed as weak and vulnerable. Along with the notion of protection came the notion of discipline, as parents taught their children to avoid any temptations of their social world. Social institutions have influenced definitions of childhood throughout history. Until the late 18th century, fro instance, child labour was commonly practiced and accepted (Archer, 1985). Still is in some cultures. In the early 19th century, half of all workers in northern factories were children, all under the age of just eleven (Coontz, 1992). • 6. Who Is Catherine The Great Biography of Catherine the Great One of the most interesting, hard working and powerful people to grace the pages of history during the eighteenth century was Catherine II, Empress of Russia. Historians have not always been so kind to her memory, and all too often one reads accounts of her private life, ignoring her many achievements. The stories of her love affairs have been overly misinterpreted and can be traced to a handful of French writers in the years immediately after Catherine s death, when Republican France was fighting for its life against a coalition that included Russia. Catherine was born Sophia Augusta Frederika of Anhalt Zerbst on April 21, 1729 in Stettin, then Germany, now Poland. Her father, Prince Christian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was at this time that Catherine, who had never felt more isolated, wrote: I should have loved my new husband, if only he had been willing or able to be in the least lovable. But in the first days of my marriage, I made some cruel reflections about him. I said to myself: If you love this man, you will be the most wretched creature on Earth. Watch your step, so far as affection for this gentleman is concerned, think of yourself, Madame. The young couple settled down, but the marriage was a miserable failure. Catherine was disappointed with her marriage, but decided to stick it out and concentrate on building herself a powerful group of allies. Catherine occupied herself with reading everything she could lay her hands on. She discovered satisfaction in the works of Plato and Voltaire. Her interest in the intellect caused an even greater distance between Peter and herself. The years passed and there was still no heir in sight. This of course irritated the Empress who wanted to secure a powerful dynasty, and could not do so without the presence of a male heir. She thought it must be Catherine s fault because she was not attracted to her husband. However, it was Peter that was not able to produce a male son, so Elizabeth permitted an affair between Catherine and a Russian military officer named Serge Saltykov. Catherine finally gave birth to a son, whom the Empress named Paul, on September 20, 1754. Peter accepted it as his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Comparing US And European Democracies 1. Thoroughly explain what a welfare state is. 1.) Welfare State is a system whereby the government undertakes to protect the health and well being of its people, especially those in financial or social need, by means of grants, pensions, and other benefits. In this world not everybody can be rich and successful, and thus some people have to work harder earning lower income to at least have a decent life. There are a lot of welfare programs that help people that are in need provided by the government. For example, the government helps the low income students by helping them pay for tuition and books with FAFSA 2. Compare and contrast the US welfare state to European Democracies (IE, size, benefits, etc). 2.) Comparing US Welfare state to the European Democracies can a little difficult. From the example I made in the last paragraph, it would not apply in Europe because college is tuition free, which is totally different from the US. One of the main reasons Europe has more welfare state is because their taxes are much more higher, and thus the government has more money to help their people. Another difference is the budget spending, which is more dedicated to welfare state rather than the military like in the US. The budget size and proportional spending are totally different in the US and Europe. 3. Aside from a higher tax ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The body temperature is controlled by the thermoregulatory centre in the hypothalamus. The temperature regulating centers are discovered in the preoptic area situated in the anterior portion of the hypothalamus. For instance, some say Sapphira smothered Bascombe Wade in his very bed, while others say she persuaded Bascombe Wade in a thousand days to deed all his slaves every inch of land in Willow Springs and poisoned him for his trouble (Naylor 3). These different interpretations apparently lead to the development to the use of the phrase 18 23 as a slang term. This is evident when Fan a little girl much younger than Scrooge had brought out the affection of her older brother as they planned to be together all the Christmas long, and have the merriest time in all the world. Individuals know mistakes will occur, but they do not understand how to nurture themselves. Because of this reality, people tear themselves apart, thinking it is the reasonable reaction. In Stephen Crane s poem, Untitled, symbolism and religious indicators illustrate the theme of self betrayal. Firstly, nature is typically fruitful; however, a desert is the antipode of this definition. Most plants cannot grow in the desert climate, creating a barren, unwelcoming environment; this is where Stephen Crane places his poem. • 25. The Ramayana Of Valmiki And Sita Sings The Blues The Ramayana of Valmiki and Sita Sings the Blues The epic story of Rama and Sita, as portrayed by Valmiki s Ramayana and the modern day film Sita sings the Blues are two different versions of the same story which contain several contrasts as well as similarities. The Ramayana is the ancient version which was written by a sage named Valmiki in 550 B.C.E, featuring a love story between an ideal prince and an ideal woman. It outlines the adventures of Rama in his journey to find his abducted wife Sita. Rama is portrayed as an avatar, being the eighth incarnation of one of the Hindu gods Vishnu, while Sita is representing Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of light. The modern day version of the Ramayana is seen in Sita Sings the Blues, where the animator Nina Paley is relating her love story to that of Sita s predicament. This paper will compare and contrast the epic story of Valmiki s Ramayana and Sita Sings the Blues in the quest for power, honor, faithfulness and the conflict between good and evil. The author Valmiki in Ramayana discussed in detail human relationships, such as those between husband and wife, parents and children, siblings, rulers, and the ruled as shown in the story. It is often referred to as a holy text as well as a guide to social practices and attitudes. Nina, the animator of the film, Sita Sings the Blues, was seen reading the Ramayana constantly because it provided some sort of comfort to her. The start of the pogroms was after Tsar Alexander II, the ruler of Russia, was killed in 1881 and it was suspected that the murderer was a Jewish man. (Antin 72) For Russia to get back, they placed all the blame on the Jewish people and the only way to get revenge was to kill each and every person who identified with the Jewish religion. The government s use of propaganda backfired as violence arose. One example of this, is in Yelizavetgrad City. The rioting became so out of control that the army had to get involved to break up the fighting. (Doyle Pogroms of 1881) While, the Russians believed that using military force would stop the people and calm them down just the opposite had occurred. People began becoming more violent and more people joined in the rioting. This was seen ten days later in the city of Kiev, an attack that lasted for over three years. Plainly speaking, if guns were not so readily available, the number of children suicides in America would decrease significantly. The number of American citizens concerned with children gun violence is rapidly increasing. Nearly a million U.S. students took guns to school during 1998. It is important to note that many school shootings are committed by children who have stolen their parents legally owned guns. Columbine is just one example of what can happen. Over the two years ending June 30, 1999, violence in and around schools happened in 25 states resulting in 105 deaths. Nearly two thirds of the victims were primary and secondary schools students, another 11 percent were teachers or staff, and the remainders were community members slain on school property. Firearms were used in 75 percent of these deaths. For example, take the case of a nine year old girl who took a Glock semiautomatic pistol to school. The girl, who told officials she found the gun in an unlocked drawer in her mother s bedroom, said she wanted it for protection against gang Candamo3 members who had threatened her at school a week ago. The solutions (Solution 2, 6, 8) containing bleach could at least survive for 5 days. However, bleach contains toxic gas which is harmful for organism as well; therefore, the solutions 2, 6, 8 were not the one lasted for the longest period when compared with other solutions. • 43. The Concepts Of Nature Vs Nurture The concepts of Nature vs Nurture, are major concepts in social science. Nature is the hereditary pattern of physical features in a human being s development. These features include, but are not limited to, our personality, usual and unusual appearances and the general measurements of how humans hold the attributes of being sociable, hostile behavior, their emotions, and the usage of alcohol and drugs. On the other hand Nurture is slightly different. Nurture is the influence of the environment that plays upon the behavior and characteristics in a human. The idea of nurture is that humans will grow up to form their personality on the way they are raised and life experiences. Culture is defined by the people in the environment, however, the environment helps shape and form human personalities in order to forge a culture. Culture is created by religions/beliefs, clothing /foods, language/social habits as well as the humanistic discipline; such as music, paintings, literature, and many more. Culture is generated by humankind, because humans hold their belief systems and patterns that was passed down by generations; by humans passing down what they have learned from their families this begins to create a culture. The first stage is a light dependent reaction, which is when the energy from the sunlight is taken and then converted by the chlorophyll molecules into stored energy. This reaction takes place in the thylakoid membranes in the granum within the chloroplast ( Light Dependent ). In this reaction, there is a transfer of electrons from water to CO2 which begins the creation of the byproduct of oxygen. The sunlight gives a boost of energy to the chlorophyll which gets over the activation barrier and makes the chlorophyll release an electron (Vidyasagar). Chlorophyll molecules trap the light through pigments and absorb... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The test was to see if spinach leaves could go through a short photosynthesis cycle without CO2, light, or both. This was done by using sodium bicarbonate and water to create CO2 in two of the beakers. With two beakers with CO2 and two without CO2, the effect of CO2 on photosynthesis could be observed. Because sunlight is important to photosynthesis, the other part of the experiment was to observe the difference between the spinach disks when exposed to sunlight and the spinach disks when exposed to only darkness. Because of the photosynthetic equation: 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + sunlight в†’ C6H12O6 + 6 O2, changing the light and the CO2 would impact the outcome of the process. This would leave the leaves at the bottom of the beaker as they would not be able to float up without the product of oxygen pushing them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
