Essay On Social Welfare
Crafting an essay on the broad and intricate subject of social welfare can be a challenging
endeavor. This topic encompasses a vast array of issues, ranging from economic policies and
government programs to societal attitudes and cultural perspectives. The complexity arises from
the need to navigate through various perspectives, historical contexts, and evolving ideologies
associated with social welfare.
To begin with, researching the multifaceted dimensions of social welfare requires delving into a
plethora of academic disciplines, including sociology, political science, economics, and public
policy. Understanding the historical development of social welfare systems, their impact on
communities, and the ongoing debates surrounding them is crucial. Furthermore, one must
grapple with the ethical considerations inherent in social welfare policies, as they often involve
questions of distributive justice, individual rights, and the role of the state.
Formulating a coherent and well-structured argument demands the synthesis of diverse
information into a cohesive narrative. Balancing statistical data, scholarly opinions, and real-life
examples can be challenging, especially when aiming to provide a comprehensive view of the
topic. The essay should not only analyze existing social welfare models but also critically
evaluate their effectiveness and address potential shortcomings.
Moreover, addressing the dynamic nature of social welfare requires an awareness of
contemporary issues and emerging trends. Policies and societal attitudes are constantly evolving,
making it essential to stay informed about the latest developments. Keeping the content of the
essay current and relevant adds an additional layer of difficulty.
In conclusion, writing an essay on social welfare involves navigating a labyrinth of historical,
political, economic, and ethical considerations. It requires a meticulous synthesis of diverse
information, critical analysis, and a nuanced understanding of the complexities associated with
the topic.

Sweatshops, Violation Of Human Rights, And Labor
The multinational corporation known as Nike Inc. has had some challenges facing
ethical issues concerning sweatshops, violations of human rights, and labor abuses
forever changing history and propelling the anti sweatshop movements. The shoe
company, now recognized as Nike was founded in 1964 by CEO, and cofounder
Philip Knight. During this time Philip and his co founder Bill Bowermanwere
distributing the athletic shoes through the Onitsuka Company. While working with
the Japanese manufacturer Nike was originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports until
1971 when the famous swoosh trademark was beginning to be used and they were
slowly veering away from working it Onitsuka. The company originated in Portland,
Oregon and opened its first store in Santa Monica, California after being in business
for two years.
Nike soon realized that the two manufacturing facilities they owned in the United
States were not obtaining enough profit and had to shut them down. This caused the
company to lose 10 million in 1977 and they only saw a profit of 5 million that year.
Today most of Nike s factories are in Asia, Indonesia, China, Vietnam, and Thailand.

A plant in Vietnam was inspected by the founder of Vietnam Labor Watch,
Thomas Nguyen. The discoveries of what happened in the factories shocked many
people and was acknowledged by the company. Supervisors in the Vietnam factory
were punishing the female workers because of their work attire. They were forced
to do labor that did not involve the production of the athletic shoes and were
exposed to excruciating weather they did not need to be subjected to. The results
were the hospitalization of some workers, and their basic rights to use a bathroom or
have beverages to consume were stripped from them. After these cases were reported,
Nike responded by suspending the supervisor involved and hired an accounting firm

While Althusser`s brand of modern structuralism can be seen as the focusing of social
inquiry on persistent deep structures that underlie human thought and culture
(Hallgrimsdottir 2013). The merging of Marxian ideals with the notion that human
action is shaped by deep structures has had a strong impact on Althusser s sociology,
this plurality of concepts only deepens the understanding of the social world.
The epitome of this theoretical dualism adopted by Althusser can be observed in
the relationship he develops between deep structures characteristic of modern
society and the concept of ideology. Ideology in its most basic definition is the
ideas that dominate a social group. Althusser along with other post Marxists posit
the notion of ideology as the imaginary relationship individuals have to their
material conditions of existence (Lemert 2010). This is a classic Marxist standpoint
as it presents the function of ideologies as an agent masking the exploitation of
lower classes of society. This ideology can be employed as a practice similar in
nature to religion or ethics, and can be used as a lens into the specific: social norms,
values, desires, and performances seen in a social context. These deep structures
Althusser mentions can range from the institution of the family to the organization of
the economy, and are then the primary determinants of all human action in a social
setting (Lemert 2010). These structures thusly are

Agatha Christie Mousetrap Play Analysis
At the Kingwood Theater, The Agatha Christie Mousetrap open to audiences at the
Lone Star College Kingwood Visual Performing Arts Theatre in Kingwood
October 20, 2016. This play has always did good historically over the last 60 years
in London. The first production of the play was in 1952, London s West End. Under
the direction of Playwright Agatha Christine, Eric C. Skiles the director, directed a
great cast of actors. Who brought out humorous and suspenseful moments through
out the production. They also kept everybody on their toes till towards the end. The
main point of the play was to find a deranged serial killer on the loose. All though
there is a historical significance to this particular play, I couldn t find one through my

This production did have some theme music to it in the beginning before the lights
cut on. The actors would blare different types a music on stage but other than that
it was pretty quite. Music would come on at random times during the play.
Sometimes the actors would play rock loudly or classical music. The only sound
that was consistently going on was actors talking. There was also sound when
Mrs. Boyle died by making loud stomping noises. The sound was still successful
during the play because it gave parts of the play life. There were a lot of great
acting moments during this production I enjoyed. I loved Detective Sergeant
Trotter performance the most. He brought the most passion to his character
throughout the whole entire of play. Even though when we thought he was the
most innocent person during the play. Another character I liked was Mollie
Ralston because her role was questionable at times. Sometimes you wonder if she
was innocent, guilty, or should be the next victim to die. The funniest actor was
Christopher Wren because of his hilarious moments. People in the audience would
laugh with he had a goofy line to say. The things I couldn t enjoy is a couple of
actors who weren t understandable. These characters were Giles Ralston and Mr.
Paravicini because of their accents they had to betray. If they could of spoke louder,
the performances would of been better. One thing the actors should of not done was
turn their backs to audience. We couldn t see there face half of the
Essay On Pacific Theatre
World War II units usually focus on European warfare, however the Pacific theatre
proved more representative of the innovative outcomes from the war. The tensions
between Japan and America began with the Pearl Harbor attacks on December 7,
1941. The attack killed over 2,400 civilians and servicemen and caused America to
finally enter World War II. During the war, Americans created propaganda posters that
advertised Anti Asian ideas and the government set up internment camps for Asians
to eliminate any suspicions of a Japanese spy. American soldiers would force anyone
of Asian culture into these internment camps in the Midwest with only a handful of
possessions. Despite homefront struggles, the Pacific theatre was one of the most
difficult wars Americans ever had to face.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The American military created an Island hopping strategy to reach the mainland of
Japan and gained islands like Okinawa and Iwo Jima to help build military bases
closer to the mainland. Although Americans were retrieving Japanese military
bases and land, Japanese soldiers were trained based off of the Bushido philosophy
which highly disapproved of a soldier surrendering rather than dying for their
country. President Roosevelt knew the challenges of the Pacific warfare and
contemplated with the idea of a mass invasion into Japan costing American lives, or
to create a weapon that would ensure American safety and Japan s surrender. Thus,
the Manhattan Project was developed to create an atomic bomb that would defeat
the Japanese. General Leslie Groves and scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer were
responsible for the creation of the atomic bomb, but they ultimately started an era of
terror: nuclear warfare. Although the Japanese were ruthless and American casualties
were increasing as Pacific warfare continued, the dropping of the atomic bomb on
Nagasaki and Hiroshima was

Benefits Of Juvenile Detention Centers
Most detention centers do not have an adequate environment for juveniles to change
their ways and become useful members of society. Some juvenile offenders never
leave a life of crime, even though they were reformed at a detention center. Though
the stated aim of secure juvenile facilities is reform, the data does not lie: detainees
and minors committed to a detention center are more likely than non detainees to be
arrested as an adult ( Make Sure You Know The Juvenile Detention Statistics and
Trends ). As such, if juveniles getting released from detention centers are going to get
arrested as an adult, then the centers are not doing their job of making them better
members of society. Not only do juveniles get sent back, but if the offender
Reasons For Australia s Involvement In The Vietnam War
After World War II in the 20th century, the United States and the Soviet Union were
the new Superpowers . These two major nations had two conflicting political
ideologies which were stated as Capitalism and Communism, and this had Australia
right in the middle of the story. Since Australia has very strong ties with the US,
making it even stronger after involving in the Vietnam War and also grew strong
with the SEATO and ANZUS with the fear of the so called domino theory and the
foreign policies which including the Forward Defence Policy. This, however,
allowed Australia to gain a closer chance to go to war in Vietnam. Australia having
really strong ties with the US makes it a nation ruled by Capitalism which made it a

Vietnam was the first time Australian conscripts were sent abroad in peace time.
Many protest groups, like Save Our Sons, started off as anti conscription, but
became anti war as the conflict dragged on. Many men started to object to national
service refusing to register or attend when called to serve. After 1968, men could be
imprisoned for refusing to comply with the National Service Scheme. By 1969 the
anti conscription movement was no longer composed of just mothers groups and
university students. It had widespread support across all sections of Australian
society. Major battles had many people wondering if the Vietnam War was, in fact,
winnable and for how long Australian soldiers were going to be involved. One of the
major factors in a growing anti war movement was the reporting of the Vietnam War;
it was a war fought on TV. No one could escape the horrors of what was happening
there. To set a conclusion, this essay shows that Australia feared the threats of
Communist attacks to gain power but since Australia and its allies, US and Britain,
negotiated throughout the conflict and played smart while thinking of the domino
theory so they worked on preventing the enemies troops from gaining access to
Australia s Shores, so they fought in Vietnam to stop the threat having help from
South Vietnam and wanted to free the North from Communist ruling as it already was

A Report On The Plane
When most people hear an airplane in the air they may look up and see just
another airplane. They don t think about how the airplane evolved. They also don
t consider any of the material it requires to achieve this most amazing feat. It s just
another aircraft carrying people or items to their destination. The journey began,
as most of us have been taught, in 1903 by the Wright brothers when they flew
their airplane for the first time. The aircraft was crudely constructed, using modern
materials for the time. Some of these materials included wood for the air frame,
muslin fabric for covers, and aluminum for the engine crank case (Smithsonian
National Air and Space Museum). In today s aircraft some of the same materials
are used especially aluminum. This case study will focus on one item used within
many small engine aircraft; a servo bracket. A servo bracket sounds like an
insignificant piece of hardware but in fact a servo bracket is a very important part
of the airplane, with a very long life cycle. The servo bracket holds the servo which
is connected directly to the airplane s control system, thus putting the bracket under
continuous tension and stress. The bracket itself is not responsible for the entire
strain of the control system, this is accomplished by using much more rigid braces,
and the braces take the brunt of the stress. The bracket s construction has to be from
material that is formable, light and semi strong. The materials must be machine
formable in order
Literary Analysis Of Pablo Picasso s Guernica

Picasso s Guernica Throughout time paintings have been used to record events,
communicate ideas or evoke an emotional response. Pablo Picasso s painting
Guernica does just this. Guernica was created to bring attention to the Nazi bombing
of the town of Guernica, Spain during the Spanish civil war in the second half of the
1930s. Its exhibition was used to provide relief and a call against the horrors of
war. Through its visual elements and symbolic concepts, Guernica depicts the
chaos and aftermath of the bombing of the city and the need to bring about change
over the tragedies of war. Standing at a massive seven feet by twenty five feet, this
black and white painting depicts a massacre of the bombing of the town of
Guernica. The composition of the work is a dimly lit space, the only light coming
from an eye shaped light at center top of the painting and a woman holding a
lantern next to it. From left to right, the scene contains a screaming bull beneath it a
woman holding a dead child. In the center there is a mangled horse pierced by spear
and below it, the mangled body of a fallen soldier. To the right are three women, one
crawling towards the light, above her is a woman leaning out of a window holding a
lit lantern and the other screaming while falling from a burning building. Guernica
captures the brutal chaos of the bombing with its physical action and intended
symbolism. Being black and white, the painting represents the somber
How Scientists Can Most Efficiently Complete Organ...
Abstract: The purpose of this experiment is to test how scientists can most
efficiently complete organ printing. In this lab, the cells will be suspended in a
substrate called sodium alginate collagen, hydrogel, and other reactants. These
materials will react to then embed the cells to their goal location. Then, the cells
will be able to be fixated into layers. These layers will then come together and form
tissues, which according to biological organization will form organs. The inkjet
bioprinter allows for this to occur. Tiny inkdroplets form a digital design for the
organ printing, and in horizontal sheets, the organ is created tissue by tissue. This
lab will test to see which percent concentration of the sodium alginate collagen
composite will prove to be most effective when organ printing. The dependent factor
that will determine the conclusion will be the percent of efficiency of cell survival
rate. Four trials will be completed in which the same organ is printed and all factors
are kept constant, except for the percent concentration of the substrate.
Introduction:
In the past, the only way to replace diminished cells, tissues, and organs was from
organ transplantation. An organ donor was needed, and the tissues would be
surgically removed from the donated body and placed into the recipient. Due to the
current research being conducted, it is believed that tissue engineering and organ
printing can contribute to the process of improving and saving lives.
Benito Cereno Analysis
In the novella, Benito Cereno, Herman Melville demonstrates the conflicting issue
of racism and how it has been a part of our society for centuries. In the novella, we
go on an adventure with two captains of Spanish descent and an overpowering
amount of African Americans slaves. Melville has captured the importance of the
slave trade and the risks that have been taken over time by African Americans
trying to earn some justice within their lives. As a reader, we are shown the heart
wrenching experiences a slave trader and an African American must endure over
the bloody trading seas. Melville creates a clear picture that Americans over
history were not always the heroes. This novella, shows the morality of our
American history and how race has created such a strong role within our culture.
There once was a time of darkness that still lingers in American culture today. This
darkness has been told by the ones who have lived these experiences. Melville
shows us that there is always another side to be told and that is the side of the ones
who have been captured. The side of the ones who don t have a voice unless it is
out of extreme measures and this is what Benito Cereno demonstrates. This
novella, shows how far one of another race had to overcome before finally being
heard and for them to be followed as a leader and not the other way around. When
reading Benito Cereno, it starts out with Captain Delano discovering a ship
floating in unbearable conditions close to docking on shore. Delano thinking the
ship is in need of some serious help. Delano boards this mystery ship and learns to
find out that it is a slave ship. However, he begins to notice something odd about
the ship. This isn t a normal slave trading ship. There is no order or direct order
from the Captain of the ship, Benito Cereno. When commanding a slave ship during
this time frame, slaves were in shackles and locked up. It was the common protocol,
to treat the slaves nothing less than an animal would be treated. However, Delano
begins to notice with his first glances upon board that slaves are on top deck, not
chained and armed with weapons. Hatchet polishers, wondering why such an
interruption should be allowed, especially on that part of the
Analysis Of The Film Boyz N The Hood
The film Boyz n the Hood, is about a group of friend who grew up in the same
neighbour hood, but were raised in different way because of the beliefs of their
parents. Tre lived with his father who thought him to do the right thing and what it
means to be a man, while Ricky and Doughboy who are brothers a raised by their
mother in a home where there is little to no structure. Ricky and Doughboy grew up
in a home where their mother openly favor one son over the other due to the fact that
one boy showed more potential then the other. After watching Boyz N the Hood there
is a clear understand that in any familythere are internal and external factors that
can effect any person. In this movie you learn that the people you are closest with
or call your family may not be blood related to you. After spending a significant
amount of time together Tre, Doughboy and Ricky became a family outside of their
own families. Internal factors that had an effect on the lives of the young boys in the
movie include the parenting style, communication skills and assignment of roles.
External factors that were seen in the film include family structures, systemic issues
of classism and racism, circumstances and environmental circumstances. The
external factor that stands out the most in Boyz N The Hood is the systemic issues
of classism and racism. The plot of the movie develops in a prominently black
community where there is know violence and is portrayed to be a low class neighbour
The War On Drugs And Drugs Essay
The war on drugs have been a critical issue that has repeatedly held a great debate
topic. It was in the 1906 when the first act against drug was put into effect with the
Pure Food and Drug Act which required all over the counter medication to have label
of its ingredients. Under President Nixon the first executive branch office to
coordinate drugpolicy was formed and the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention
and Control Act was put into place. Two years following that the Drug
Enforcement Agency (DEA) was formed. The funding for the war on drugs had
greatly increased over the decades and has reached the record of an annual budget
of $17.8 billion which occurred in 1998. Much of the budget is used to intervene
drug flow on the U.S. border and for interdiction according to Cooper s 1993 War
on Drugs article. Some people agree that having more man power at the U.S.
border will help eliminate the U.S. drug problem while others argue that even
though having more people working the border increases drug seizures there are
still drugs continuing to enter the United States. These may be the very people that
believe in using the budget to provide more educational programs to the younger
generation and having prevention programs will help those that may have become a
drug user if not a addict. The last group of American do not believe either of those
programs have worked in the past and will not work in the future. With those options

Even in His Rise to Power, Wang Lung Respected and
Loved...
In traditional Chinese culture, there has always been a strong connection with the
earth. The earth gives life and helps to sustain it, and in the end the earth is where
you return. For Wang Lung, this was a concept easily grasped. He loved the land,
and even in his rise to power, his connection to it remained. When he was most at
peace, he was working the land. The times he grew restless were those when he
was unable to farm. Often with the gain of monetary wealth, the decline of morality
follows closely behind. This is magnified in the lives of Wang Lung s three sons.
The eldest son becomes obsessed with women and is eager to satisfy the desires of
the flesh. For the rich, this is a common thing. Once you tire of the beautiful maid...

Has it ever been more true that money is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10)? And
it is odd that in a culture with such a strong sense of duty and honor for their
ancestors that as their father was dying they were planning on how to divide up and
sell the land; the land that had given them so much, and the same that had put them
through school and fed and clothed them and was the only thing to remain when they
had nothing else? This was something Wang Lung could not communicate with his
sons. They seemed to think that their wealth would go far beyond the ground from
which it came. Maybe they could not remember the months they spent in the hut, or
when they had no choice but to eat gruel made from the soil. They did not know
how fleeting wealth was as their father had learned earlier in life. Wang Lung
himself was not exempt from these same sins as seen in his sons, however.
Throughout his life he had two constant forces working within him, not unlike the
traditional concept of yin and yang. Yin and yang is believed to be in everything and
is the essence of all naturally occurring things. They are opposite but cannot exist
without each other, so the struggle is to find the perfect balance. Like with Wang
Lung, when he only has the land and his earthen house but no wealth or the
misfortune of a drought, he suffers. He cannot feed his family and cannot live. But
when there is too much
How Organizations Are Competing On Analytics Essay
Organizations are competing on analytics not just because they can business today
is awash in data and data crunchers but also because they should. At a time when
firms in many industries offer similar products and services, and use comparable
technologies, businesses are among the last remaining points of differentiation. And
analytics competitors wring every last drop of value from those processes. So, like
other companies, they know what products their customers want, the prices they are

Plato’s Allegory of the Cave and The Matrix Essay
The Republic is considered to be one of Plato s most storied legacies. Plato
recorded many different philosophical ideals in his writings. Addressing a wide
variety of topics from justice in book one, to knowledge, enlightenment, and the
senses as he does in book seven. In his seventh book, when discussing the concept of
knowledge, he is virtually addressing the clichГ© seeing is believing , while
attempting to validate the roots of our knowledge. By his use of philosophical
themes, Platois able to further his points on enlightenment, knowledge, and education.
In this allegory, the depictions of humans as they are chained, their only knowledge
of the world is what is seen inside the cave. Plato considers what would happen to

The prisoners have been in these conditions since their earliest stages of life. The
cave, the wall, and the chains are all the prisoners have ever known. Behind the
prisoners, there was a raised path. Above the walkway was a platform, where there
was a fire burning, and in front of the fire, was a parapet, which as Plato described
it , was like that of the screens Puppeteers use to hide themselves and have the
puppets be visible . Each and every day, the prisoners see nothing, but the shadows
of the objects and people passing between them and the fire. For their entire lives,
the prisoners are exposed to nothing but those images and the sounds made by
those walking around. These shadows are all they have ever known, in essence;
these shadows are their only reality . As time passed, the prisoners would grow
accustomed to these sights, later on the prisoners would match the objects with
names and the familiar sounds to the images of the shadows (514; Appendix A). In
discussing the allegory with Glaucon, Socrates toys around the concept of what
could happen to a prisoner should they be released after having lived their lives in
the cave, with the only knowledge the possess of the world, are the images and
sounds by the wall. The similarities between The Cave and The Matrix are too
uncanny. The description of the cave above, which is discussed in the first paragraph
of Plato s seventh book, can be portrayed similarly in

actions towards each person displays the respect she has or doesn t have towards
that person. One person Squeaky doesn t have respect and happiness towards is

Trent Bridge
The Veteran s Skyway Gateway to the Trent Bridge
In the early 1990s, the aging swing bridge crossing the Trent River in Trenton,
Ontario was replaced with a continuous span steel box girder bridge. The unique part
of this process was that the new bridge was built adjacent to the existing swing bridge
and slid laterally into place; this was the first time in North America that this
technique had been done. The process consisted of five mains steps; first, the
planning of such an undertaking, second, deciding on how to proceed, third,
constructing the new bridge on site, fourth, removing the old swing bridge, and
finally, sliding the new bridge into place, all the while ensuring minimal impact to the
vehicular traffic through town and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the city determined that one bridge would not sufficiently handle the
volume of traffic during the 18 months it would take to complete a new bridge. Thus,
City councillors, working with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and engineers
from Declan Corporation of Toronto, conceived the plan of buildinga new bridge
adjacent to the swing bridge, and later sliding it into place (Anderson Trenkler,

had to reverse the direction of the swing rotation of the existing bridge, as it swung
directly towards the site the new bridge would be built and would impede on the
construction process (Anderson Trenkler, 1991). Once the planning was finalized and
the site prepped, construction could begin.
In the spring of 1989, the construction of the new bridge began. The base of the
Trent River was a flotilla of barges carrying the workers, cranes and equipment
needed to prepare the temporary pillars that would support the new bridge, as well
as maneuver the huge steel girders into place for the new bridge. It was an
awesome sight for the entire town, as we watched barges float the steel girders into
the harbour, one section being 74 meters in length and two more that were 54 metres
each. The new steel box girder bridge had a total length of 182 metres and weighed
2,950 metric tonnes (Anderson Trenkler, 1991). Temporary cement pillars were

Invention, Innovation, and Interdependence Essay
Scientific and technological progress is one of the most important and far reaching of
humanity s effort streams throughout history. One of the hallmarks of any great
society is what new or improved knowledge of the world and how it works that the
society can contribute. A strong and vibrant culture celebrates the spirit of invention
and innovation. Closely allied with this concept is the spirit of entrepreneurship,
considered one of the greatest qualities of the American culture.
Americans laud the success of the inventor and salesman alike; while the greatest self
promoters are more fully remembered, the greatest minds are never truly forgotten. It

In this manner, he established himself as the archetypal genius tinkerer rather than
an educated engineer or knowledgeable scientist. Edison did not value ideas for their
own sake, as ideas for inventions can be easy enough to acquire; he knew that the
real work came from ...the long laborious trouble of working them out and producing
apparatus that is commercial (Millard 43).
This process of working things out led Edison to establish one of the earliest
successful industrial research centers in America at his West Orange laboratory in
New Jersey. It was here that Edison and company pioneered many of the technologies
associated with his name. Inventions such as the motion picture camera and the
phonograph were developed here; from their humble technological beginnings, these
devices have given rise to the motion picture and musical entertainment industries
and are ubiquitous in their modern applications. Edison realized that the key to
being a successful inventor is not in making things but in acquiring sufficient
financial backing to transform genius into reality on a large scale. In this area,
Edison proved himself to be perhaps more adept as a procurer of capital and support
than as an inventor. He excelled at the business of innovation , outpacing many of his
contemporaries who preferred to disregard the business side
Magnetic Resonance Imaging Analysis
The field of imaging provides many examples of each biomedical images and
biomedical image processing. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is quality for
displaying abnormalities of the brain equivalent to: stroke, hemorrhage, tumor,
multiple sclerosis or lesions. In the MRI normal signals are currents precipitated in
a coil brought on via the motion of molecular dipoles as the molecules resume a
random orientation after having been aligned with the aid of the imposed magnetic
field. Signal processing is required to realize and decode them, which is completed
in terms of the spatial locations of the dipoles (which is involving the sort of tissue
where they re placed). Much of the related signal processing is based on Fourier
transforms. Normally MRI utilizes two dimensional Fourier transforms and the
general standards are the same.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Langston Hughes Advertisement For The Waldorf-Astoria
Langston Hughes, a radical African American writer of the Harlem Renaissance
wrote Advertisement for the Waldorf Astoria in response to the festivities that
surrounded the reopening of New York s obscenely opulent hotel, Waldorf Astoria
in midst of the Great Depression. The poem was first published in The New
Masses in December 1931 as a two paged poem accompanied by illustrations by
Walter Steinhuber. The poem takes the form of a parody of a magazine
advertisement in Vanity Fair and is considered one of Hughes s most direct
indictments of the economic inequality in the 1930 s. Several contexts animate The

The sarcastic tone and statements invokes a sense of bitterness in the readers as it
calls upon the devastating reality whilst provoking an urgency for change, which is
a prominent characteristic of protest poetry as this form of poetry tends to stimulate
a reader s interest and empathy to spur him or her into action. The poem s main
message is the idea for change and equality. This revolutionary poem plays as a
scathing social commentary of the products of capitalism for investing in Waldorf

objective is finding fault within some existing current event and focuses on
dissatisfactions and objections towards the

I chose the book of Ephesians because It s my favorite book. From chapter one
straight through until the end, it is inspirational and encouraging. The book of
Ephesians was penned by Paul the apostle, while he was imprisoned. This letter was
written to the church in Ephesus. Ephesus is located in the western Asia Minor at
the mouth of the Caster River, an important Seaport (HCSB, 2010). The message of
this letter is so powerful. Paul opens this book by encouraging the audience to give

Although this city represents a great part of the Christian movement and the
Ephesians church, it wasn t founded as such. The city of Ephesus was founded by
a group of people called the Leleges and Carians which were later driven out by the

Disaster struck the city in 365 B.C. when a fire destroyed the Artemision Temple.
Finally, the city was completely taken over and rebuilt by the Romans, which was the

Role Of The Egf Receptor On Lipid
The Role of the EGF Receptor LET 23 on Lipid Biosynthesis in Caenorhabditis
elegans
N. R. Contos
Thesis Abstract
The Caenorhabditis elegans LET 23, which is an Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)
receptor, controls multiple developmental pathways. In humans, EGF receptor
mutations are implicated in a large number of cancers due to excess signaling
promoting cell growth and cell division. Recent work has shown that in C. elegans
LET 23 may also affect lipid production, specifically that of the phospholipid
phosphatidylcholine. To investigate the role of the LET 23 receptor on lipid
production, I have examined the cellular location of a fluorescent tagged SBP 1
marker under different conditions within the worm and from these inferred levels of
lipid production. I will discuss my results and their impact on our understanding of
EGF signaling and lipid biosynthesis.
Thesis Intro: As a whole the world is becoming more aware of how fats affect the
body. Not only are lipids a key element in cell membranes, they also lead to many
issues regarding health. Obesity is an ever increasing risk factor for many diseases
including type II diabetes, cardiac disease, and some forms of cancer (Kopelman
2000). As obesity transitions from little known problem into a full blown global
epidemic, it is important to understand how lipids are synthesized and regulated
within the body. Lipid synthesis pathways involve a complex interaction between the
endocrine system, tissues, nutrient storage and

Racism And The World And Me
The Most Known Unknown in the World
Racism has been and always will be a form of segregation concurrently and in the
history of humanity. From Ancient times to current, the status of segregation by
any means of oppression privy of power, wealth, and prestige has been as second
nature as drinking water. While Coates has his own perspective of reality and its
structure, it s interesting that a so called genius had taken almost 30 years to finally
see the true nature of the beast he frequented. That Beast known as Racist America
and all if its capitalist racial qualities. While some have their own experiences and
perspectives, Between The World and Me , past historical events on racismin
America; including the Civil Rights Movement, correlative measures of other
countries on racism and the slave trade, and the many obstacles that are implemented
to secure such advantages will continue to be the key topics of discussion.
Interpretively speaking on Between The World and Me , Ta Nehisi Coates speaks
upon the current state of racial relations similarly to W.E.B. Dubois Color Line of
the 21st Century. It is the indirect, non named, hiding in the shadows, racism that is
so heavily intertwined and implemented in our cultural and social structures. (Kelley,
Robin) Simon and Garfunkel wrote a song eerily similar to this theme, The Sound of
Silence , and although it pre dates the release of Coates book, it gives great concern
of the existing issues that have adapted and

In order to limit exchanging music, record companies want to make hardware and
software to prevent music from being copied. But this would prevent people from
copying their own music. That means no making CD mixes or putting music from
your CDs on the computer, which is all perfectly legal. A handful of CDs already
have certain features that prohibit the CD from being played on the computer and
thereby prohibit the CD from being copied. There are many legitimate reasons for
someone to copy their CDs, however. First, instead of taking a whole bunch of

Second, how many times have you scratched a CD? Too many to count, no doubt,

Captivity And Restoration Of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson
A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson by Mary
Rowlandson is a primary example of the sectionalism of Puritans, and more
specifically, Puritan women. Rowlandson recounts the attack on her home by the
Wampanoag tribe as well as the aftermath of her eventual capture. Being certain to
record the removes, or days spent traveling with her captors, Rowlandson created a
record of her travels with her captors as well as preserved her own womanhood from
the accusations of her own people. The time of Puritan colonies was one in which
male preachers held the most power. Preachers received more education than most of
the population and their status as males provided them an unquestionable position of
power in Puritan society.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This restriction of interests is clearly displayed in the captivity narrative of Mrs.
Rowlandson. One example of this is her specific detail regarding her sleeping
situation and detailing of anything involving her body or emotion. As mentioned
above, Puritans placed a great deal of emphasis on the chastity of a woman,
meaning that Rowlandson was compelled to record everything that happened to
her in order to protect herself and her chastity by including her womanly feelings
such as her grief from having her child killed and having to leave her family
behind. Another example of sectionalism within the narrative can be found in
Rowlandson s account of the specific locations that she traveled to and the culture
of the people that she was with. She frequently mentions locations of Indian towns
and the barbaric behavior of the people living in them in order to both provide
details concerning the land around her home and to create a significant divide
between herself and the immoral group she was with. Finally, Mrs. Rowlandson
was able to display Puritan sectionalism by killing her captors and returning to her
family. As odd as it was for Mary to kill the Indians with brutality akin to that
exhibited by the natives, her actions were seen as justified and actually glorified by
the Puritans after her eventual return and

Borders By Thomas King Analysis
In the short story Borders by Thomas King there is a predicament with First Nations
identity while attempting to cross Canadian and US borders. These problems can
relate with an article by Brian Kolva titled Lacrosse Players, Not Terrorists: The
Effects of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative on Native American International
Travel and Sovereignty . In this article there is the same identity predicaments
occurring as found in Borders. These two readings are similar when displaying the
issues First Nationspeople face when addressing who they are because of policies put
in place by governmentthat do not include everyone s personal identity. The
governments of the world need to be aware of these many different identities and
policies must change for the inclusion of all people. Firstly the most clear piece of
evidence supporting the topic is the overall denial of entry into the countries. In
Borders the Canadian and US borders will not let a mother and her son through
because she identifies as Blackfoot (King, pg 284 line 8). This denial factor can be
seen in LacrossePlayers, Not Terrorists also; the Iroquois Nationals team was
denied access into Britain due to their Haudenosaunee passports(Kolva, para 1).
The options given to these two different groups were extremely similar, in Borders
the mother and her son were asked to identify as Canadian or American to cross and
the lacrosse players were asked to use Canadian or American passports to gain access

Human Spinal Deformities Using 3d Reconstruction
Techniques
Literature Survey on Human Spinal Deformities using 3D Reconstruction Techniques
Introduction:
Spine and its deformities: Scoliosis is a complex three dimensional (3 D)
deformation of the trunk that requires orthopedic treatment in 5 out of 1000 persons
[1]. It is described as a lateral deviation of the spine (Fig. 1), combined with
asymmetric deformation and axial rotation of the vertebrae, deformation of the rib
cage and possibly of the pelvis.
The human spine is divided into cervical (7 vertebrae C1 C7), thoracic (12
vertebrae Tl T12), and lumbar (5 vertebrae L1 L5) sections above a fused sacrum
(Fig. 2). While the spine normally has no lateral curvature, there are normal side view
curves including lumbar lordosis, thoracic kyphosis and cervical lordosis. Scoliotic
curves are considered thoracic when the apex lies between T2 and T11,
thoracolumbar at T12 L1, and lumbar from L2 L5. Each vertebra consists of an
anterior weight bearing vertebral body and posterior elements that protect the spinal
cord and enable muscular and ligamentous attachments (Fig. 3). Particularly in
severe scoliotic curves, asymmetric loads on the vertebrae encourage asymmetric
growth of the vertebral elements, with one result being that despite a substantial
underlying spinal curve the spinous processes may deform to produce a relatively
straight line on the back surface. The spine, composed of vertebrae connected by
fluid filled intervertebral discs, is a loose and
Reducing Poverty In California
The question in in regards to what is wrong with the economical climate in
California, and why California ranks as the state with the highest poverty rate, is
answered by Michael Walsh in his column on PJ Media. An answer is presented, but
no solution is proposed. I agree that California represents such povertyrates due to the
perpetual cycle of public assistance propagated throughout the state. As the state
government allocates generous assistance to those who fall below the poverty line,
people in such a position become increasingly reliant upon supplementary income
from the state. Therefore instead of reducing poverty, the state simply promotes it. In
fact, California s housing costs are some of the highest in the nation, including
utilities.
AP World History Olympics DBQ
The modern Olympic movement has been shaped by many differentiating factors
over the years. It has been altered by social, political, and economic factors. More
specifically, warring times, changes to social structures, and economic activity that
varies by country have been the overall leading factors that have shaped the
Olympics over the years. The Olympics have shown over the decades that they can
be affected by political conflict. However, it seems that this is the point of the

However, the dramatic increase in the fees paid to broadcast Atlanta s games
illustrates the time of peace after the Cold War ended, with over 800 million dollars
being given to broadcast the games(9).
Finally, the Olympic games are altered by the diverse and changing social structures
in the world. For instance, in 1908 a photograph of British competitor Sybil Newall
shooting her bow was found on newspapers across England(2). Whether this
photograph was staged to sell newspapers or not, it cannot be denied that this
photograph indicates the beginning of women s movement, which was obviously an
important issue during this time in the world. With more leniency being given to
women during this time, they were eventually being allowed to compete in the
competitive events, though only 2% of the athletes were women. This factor also
continues to show during the 1992 games held in Spain, where by then 29% of
women were competing. Hassiba Boulmerka was an Algerian competitor during this
time and spoke in an interview about her critics, and how being the first Algerian to
win an Olympic title did not depend on her gender, but simply on her strength in her
mind and in body. Boulmerka was heavily criticized by Muslim groups in Algeria for
wearing shorts as she ran in the events. Despite this, the games illustrated the
decreasing requirements for dresses and increasing requests for

Abraham Lincoln once said, The strongest bond of human sympathy outside the
family relation should be one uniting working people of all nations and tongues and

The staff helps the students get familiar with the school s process, schedule and what
is expected from each student.
Since each branch has different job tasks, communication is very essential among all
the branches. For example, if the administration staff does not inform the teachers
about a mandatory meeting, the teachers would not know about it and will not attend
the meeting. Therefore, the teachers will be reprimanded for not attending without
being at fault. And as well if the teacher does not inform the administrator staff about
a field trip, the administrator staff will panic when the students are not present in the
school.
The school must organize in a way that it can function properly. According to
Schermerhorn, J. Hunt, J. and Osborn, R. an organization must consider short term
and long term performance and it also requires a commitment to continuous and
lifelong learning from one s work and everyday experiences. And must also a motto
of belief in which the school is based upon. At TJHS the motto is take pride in what
you do. This motto is to be used by all the employees and the students.
Turlock Junior High School takes pride in having a diversity of staff and students,
providing communication among all, and being organized to be able function
accurately. Carl Rogers said If we value independence, if we are disturbed by the
growing conformity of knowledge, of values, of attitudes, which our present system
induces, then we may wish to set
Struggling to Define Industry in the Industrial Disputes Act
INTRODUCTION
No other provision of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947 (hereinafter ID Act) has
been under as much scrutiny as the definition of industry given under section 2(j).
To avail the benefit of the ID Act, it is necessary for the worker to prove that his
place of employment falls under the purview of the definition of industry in s 2(j).
Over the years the judiciary has laid down certain tests and criteria to determine and
limit (or as seen later, expand) the scope of the legislation to extend the benefits to
workers in different establishments. One such issue was to examine if educational
institutions (universities, schools, etc) would fall under s. 2(j). This essay starts by
tracing the judicial developments with regard to educational institutions under s 2(j).
ARE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS INDUSTRY ?
The concern of education as industry arose for the first time in Corporation of
Nagpur v Its Employees . It was held that the education department of the
corporation was a service being provided and would therefore fall under industry .
The question was again addressed in Delhi University v Ram Nath in 1963. The
argument presented was that widest meaning should be given to s. 2(j) along the line
of the decision in Hospital Mazdoor Sabha , wherein it had been stated that industry
expressly included services . The working principle stated that the activity should
involve the co operation of the employer and employees with the object of satisfying

Cloning could potentially allow advances in science that will benefit society as a

ethically wrong. Proponents for cloning animals know that it can allow for a healthier

they will eventually be able to prevent them with genetic engineering. Recently,
Israeli scientists announced that they have managed to grow embryonic cells to
create specific organ cells like those from the heart and pancreas (Hope). President
Obama reinforces the idea that these tiny cells may have the potential to help us
understand, and possibly cure, some of our most devastating diseases (Follow up).
Although many might believe humans should go by the principle that only the strong

Red Scare Espionage And The Cold War

Red Scare Espionage
There has been a lot of contention on the matter of spies and whistleblowers since
the cold war to today. Recent acts of espionage have the public questioning
government, on the acts it has taken with these widespread criminals. The practice
or act of spying to discover military and political secrets of other nations can also be
known as committing espionage. During the cold war many spies sought out secrets
of other countries for military and political information. A few years after the U.S.
went into war against Germany, the U.S. states congress passed the Espionage Act.

to Russia. Scientific steps such as these of the United Staes rivals had many
eyeing others in their suspicions.(Casalaspi) On July 17, 1950, Julius Rosenberg an
electrical engineer and employee for the U.S. Army Signal Corps, was arrested for
supposedly passing atomic secrets to Russia. A month later his wife Ethel was
arrested for assisting her husband with his illegal activities. The Rosenberg s were
members of the American Communist Party until they decided to act upon they own
illicit activities.(Casalaspi) They were said to be responsible by Ethel s brother in
law, David Greenglass and a Philadelphia chemist, Harry Gold. After admitting to
their own illegal activities Greenglass and Gold served as the primary witnesses in
the trial.(Casalaspi) Greenglass, who himself had confessed to providing nuclear
secrets to the Soviets through an intercessor, later served 10 years in prison. Julius
and Ethel Rosenberg were sentenced to death under the Espionage Act of 1917.
President Truman and President Eisenhower payed no attention to cynical public
opinion, and decided not to pardon the Rosenberg s. After two years of prison on
June 19, 1953 the couple met the electric chair. Following declassified government
documents of the FBI, CIA the Freedom of Information Act shows that Julius was
indeed a spy for the soviets but the case against Ethel was a bit weak. (NYT) With

In Dreams Begin Responsibilities Essay
Svetlana Sidorova
Professor Grossman
Eng 201 534
October 19, 2012
In In Dreams Begin Responsibilities Delmore Schwartz works with themes illusion,
status and changes. He does this through mother, father and light. Schwartz is saying
that most of the people are infantile and weak because they cannot accept the reality
of life.
Through the mother, we see that dreaming may lead to a painful disappointment. The
mother has an unrealistic image of her and her future husband as an idyllic,
respectable and happy couple, which is not true in reality. ... avoiding the riotous
amusements being beneath the dignity of so dignified couple . She is trying to make
an image of herself as an intelligent, domestic and interesting woman, which shows ...

In a photographer s booth, we see the symbol of light where parents are able to
look on themselves from the side and they have a possibility to understand that they
are intolerable to each other. The place is shadowed in the mauve light which is
apparently necessary . Unfortunately, they know it from the beginning but they don
not want to accept it because it will disturb already chosen path. ...and finally,
shocked by their indifference . The only son, who is going to start an adult life, able
to summarize the parents mistakes and to build his future in the light of love, hope
and faith. ...into the cold light, I woke up . No matter what and when we are always
know where is the light but sometimes it is easier to wander in a gloom then to find
strength to look at the sun.
Schwartz beliefs, that most of the people live with false creeds, imaginary definitions
of life and pretensions to others. In In Dreams Begin Responsibilities , the mother and
father know that they are a bad match to each other, but they close their eyes on
these trays if light because they do not have a potency to change what is already
established. The author is saying that we always have to follow our sense of rightness,
even if it hearts our eyes, otherwise we will waste the life and we will never reach the
whole beauty and glory of our unique

Pollution In Los Angeles County
Los Angeles County ranks among the 10% worst air quality polluters in the US.
The hustle and bustle of public transportation and smog released by an over
populated commuter based region, have significantly lowered air quality standards.
Henceforth, health concerns have risen for all Angelinos. Research has observed
that there is a serious influx of pollutants in the air that could have damaging results
both on adults and children alike. However, different forms of renewable energy
over the years have facilitated an alternative to this issue. A movement away from an
urban sprawl Los Angeles to new urbanism has allotted us better living and breathing
conditions over the last several years. Smogpollutionby public transit and commuter

CO2, CO, VOC, PM10). However, it is my opinion, that we can focus our efforts
to better materials as seen on the diagram and impact potentials. For example,
while Los Angeles is moving toward a new urbanism lay out and the benefits are
plenty, if buildings are wasting energy, or factories are using wrong materials to
process their work. Then ultimately, we are simply just breaking even at the end of
the day. The move of public transportation into a more renewable source of fuel is
great use of this methodology. Taking the present material and further extracting it
to its organic core. Through educating the community, and continuing the efforts to
push for a greener metropolitan area, Los Angeles could be a marvelous place to
live and grow. On a personal note, the strategy of giving the employee a stipend for
his or her effort in finding other means of transportation is a real motivation. I travel
through train when possible and have become acquainted to it. Riding the train and
talking to other locals, you begin to understand that there are people out there doing
their part in making home a little bit more healthier one train ride at a time. Seeing
the extra cash on payroll at the end of the week is also a
What Is Voldemort Loss Of Power
Call him Voldemort, Harry. Always use the proper name for things. Fear of a name
increases fear of the thing itself. Voldemort s power became so prominent at one
time that people refused to even speak his name. His power seemed to diminish after
his assassination attempt on Harry Potter, but he slowly built that power back up to
seek revenge.
Voldemort s power diminished when he attempted to murder the Potter family,
specifically a young baby name Harry. What they re saying, she pressed on, is that
last night Voldemort turned up in Godric s Hollow. He went to find the Potters. The
rumor is that Lily and James Potter are are that they re dead. Professor McGonagall
s voice trembled as she went on. That s not all. They re saying ... Show more content

He spent years trying to gather back the power he lost that night, never quite
succeeding in gaining the power back. In fact, Voldemort s only success was finding
people to continue to fend off of and steal power from. This wasn t enough once
faced with Harry Potter again. Harry s defeat against Voldemort set Voldemort back
even more but didn t succeed in destroying the dark wizard completely. Yes, sir.
Well, Voldemort s going to try other ways of coming back, isn t he? I mean, he
hasn t gone, has he? No, Harry, he has not. He is still out there somewhere, perhaps
looking for another body to share... not being truly alive, he cannot be killed. He
left Quirrell to die; he shows just as little mercy to his followers as his enemies.
Nevertheless, Harry, while you may only have delayed his return to power, it will
merely take someone else who is prepared to fight what seems a losing battle next
time and if he is delayed again, and again, why, he may never return to power.
Perhaps Voldemort s ambitions and desire for revenge dominates his entire being in
such a way that he ends up relying solely on them to

This topic encompasses a vast array of issues, ranging from economic policies and government programs to societal attitudes and cultural perspectives. The complexity arises from the need to navigate through various perspectives, historical contexts, and evolving ideologies associated with social welfare. To begin with, researching the multifaceted dimensions of social welfare requires delving into a plethora of academic disciplines, including sociology, political science, economics, and public policy. Understanding the historical development of social welfare systems, their impact on communities, and the ongoing debates surrounding them is crucial. Furthermore, one must grapple with the ethical considerations inherent in social welfare policies, as they often involve questions of distributive justice, individual rights, and the role of the state. Formulating a coherent and well-structured argument demands the synthesis of diverse information into a cohesive narrative. Sweatshops, Violation Of Human Rights, And Labor The multinational corporation known as Nike Inc. has had some challenges facing ethical issues concerning sweatshops, violations of human rights, and labor abuses forever changing history and propelling the anti sweatshop movements. The shoe company, now recognized as Nike was founded in 1964 by CEO, and cofounder Philip Knight. During this time Philip and his co founder Bill Bowermanwere distributing the athletic shoes through the Onitsuka Company. While working with the Japanese manufacturer Nike was originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports until 1971 when the famous swoosh trademark was beginning to be used and they were slowly veering away from working it Onitsuka. The company originated in Portland, Oregon and opened its first store in Santa Monica, California after being in business for two years. Nike soon realized that the two manufacturing facilities they owned in the United States were not obtaining enough profit and had to shut them down. This caused the company to lose 10 million in 1977 and they only saw a profit of 5 million that year. Today most of Nike s factories are in Asia, Indonesia, China, Vietnam, and Thailand. In these ... The discoveries of what happened in the factories shocked many people and was acknowledged by the company. Supervisors in the Vietnam factory were punishing the female workers because of their work attire. They were forced to do labor that did not involve the production of the athletic shoes and were exposed to excruciating weather they did not need to be subjected to. The results were the hospitalization of some workers, and their basic rights to use a bathroom or have beverages to consume were stripped from them. After these cases were reported, Nike responded by suspending the supervisor involved and hired an accounting firm to help resolve the

While Althusser`s brand of modern structuralism can be seen as the focusing of social inquiry on persistent deep structures that underlie human thought and culture (Hallgrimsdottir 2013). The merging of Marxian ideals with the notion that human action is shaped by deep structures has had a strong impact on Althusser s sociology, this plurality of concepts only deepens the understanding of the social world. The epitome of this theoretical dualism adopted by Althusser can be observed in the relationship he develops between deep structures characteristic of modern society and the concept of ideology. Ideology in its most basic definition is the ideas that dominate a social group. Althusser along with other post Marxists posit the notion of ideology as the imaginary relationship individuals have to their material conditions of existence (Lemert 2010). This is a classic Marxist standpoint as it presents the function of ideologies as an agent masking the exploitation of lower classes of society. This ideology can be employed as a practice similar in nature to religion or ethics, and can be used as a lens into the specific: social norms, values, desires, and performances seen in a social context. These deep structures Althusser mentions can range from the institution of the family to the organization of the economy, and are then the primary determinants of all human action in a social setting (Lemert 2010). These structures thusly are

  • 6. Agatha Christie Mousetrap Play Analysis At the Kingwood Theater, The Agatha Christie Mousetrap open to audiences at the Lone Star College Kingwood Visual Performing Arts Theatre in Kingwood October 20, 2016. This play has always did good historically over the last 60 years in London. The first production of the play was in 1952, London s West End. Under the direction of Playwright Agatha Christine, Eric C. Skiles the director, directed a great cast of actors. Who brought out humorous and suspenseful moments through out the production. They also kept everybody on their toes till towards the end. The main point of the play was to find a deranged serial killer on the loose. All though there is a historical significance to this particular play, I couldn t find one through my knowledge.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This production did have some theme music to it in the beginning before the lights cut on. The actors would blare different types a music on stage but other than that it was pretty quite. Music would come on at random times during the play. Sometimes the actors would play rock loudly or classical music. The only sound that was consistently going on was actors talking. There was also sound when Mrs. Boyle died by making loud stomping noises. The sound was still successful during the play because it gave parts of the play life. There were a lot of great acting moments during this production I enjoyed. I loved Detective Sergeant Trotter performance the most. He brought the most passion to his character throughout the whole entire of play. Even though when we thought he was the most innocent person during the play. Another character I liked was Mollie Ralston because her role was questionable at times. Sometimes you wonder if she was innocent, guilty, or should be the next victim to die. The funniest actor was Christopher Wren because of his hilarious moments. People in the audience would laugh with he had a goofy line to say. The things I couldn t enjoy is a couple of actors who weren t understandable. These characters were Giles Ralston and Mr. Paravicini because of their accents they had to betray. If they could of spoke louder, the performances would of been better. One thing the actors should of not done was turn their backs to audience. We couldn t see there face half of the
  • 7. Essay On Pacific Theatre World War II units usually focus on European warfare, however the Pacific theatre proved more representative of the innovative outcomes from the war. The tensions between Japan and America began with the Pearl Harbor attacks on December 7, 1941. The attack killed over 2,400 civilians and servicemen and caused America to finally enter World War II. During the war, Americans created propaganda posters that advertised Anti Asian ideas and the government set up internment camps for Asians to eliminate any suspicions of a Japanese spy. American soldiers would force anyone of Asian culture into these internment camps in the Midwest with only a handful of possessions. Despite homefront struggles, the Pacific theatre was one of the most difficult wars Americans ever had to face.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The American military created an Island hopping strategy to reach the mainland of Japan and gained islands like Okinawa and Iwo Jima to help build military bases closer to the mainland. Although Americans were retrieving Japanese military bases and land, Japanese soldiers were trained based off of the Bushido philosophy which highly disapproved of a soldier surrendering rather than dying for their country. President Roosevelt knew the challenges of the Pacific warfare and contemplated with the idea of a mass invasion into Japan costing American lives, or to create a weapon that would ensure American safety and Japan s surrender. Thus, the Manhattan Project was developed to create an atomic bomb that would defeat the Japanese. General Leslie Groves and scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer were responsible for the creation of the atomic bomb, but they ultimately started an era of terror: nuclear warfare. Although the Japanese were ruthless and American casualties were increasing as Pacific warfare continued, the dropping of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima was

Some juvenile offenders never leave a life of crime, even though they were reformed at a detention center. • 10. Reasons For Australia s Involvement In The Vietnam War After World War II in the 20th century, the United States and the Soviet Union were the new Superpowers . These two major nations had two conflicting political ideologies which were stated as Capitalism and Communism, and this had Australia right in the middle of the story. Since Australia has very strong ties with the US, making it even stronger after involving in the Vietnam War and also grew strong with the SEATO and ANZUS with the fear of the so called domino theory and the foreign policies which including the Forward Defence Policy. This, however, allowed Australia to gain a closer chance to go to war in Vietnam. Australia having really strong ties with the US makes it a nation ruled by Capitalism which made it a huge target... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Vietnam was the first time Australian conscripts were sent abroad in peace time. Many protest groups, like Save Our Sons, started off as anti conscription, but became anti war as the conflict dragged on. Many men started to object to national service refusing to register or attend when called to serve. After 1968, men could be imprisoned for refusing to comply with the National Service Scheme. By 1969 the anti conscription movement was no longer composed of just mothers groups and university students. It had widespread support across all sections of Australian society. Major battles had many people wondering if the Vietnam War was, in fact, winnable and for how long Australian soldiers were going to be involved. One of the major factors in a growing anti war movement was the reporting of the Vietnam War; it was a war fought on TV. No one could escape the horrors of what was happening there. To set a conclusion, this essay shows that Australia feared the threats of Communist attacks to gain power but since Australia and its allies, US and Britain, negotiated throughout the conflict and played smart while thinking of the domino theory so they worked on preventing the enemies troops from gaining access to Australia s Shores, so they fought in Vietnam to stop the threat having help from South Vietnam and wanted to free the North from Communist ruling as it already was a Communist
  • 11. A Report On The Plane When most people hear an airplane in the air they may look up and see just another airplane. They don t think about how the airplane evolved. They also don t consider any of the material it requires to achieve this most amazing feat. It s just another aircraft carrying people or items to their destination. The journey began, as most of us have been taught, in 1903 by the Wright brothers when they flew their airplane for the first time. The aircraft was crudely constructed, using modern materials for the time. Some of these materials included wood for the air frame, muslin fabric for covers, and aluminum for the engine crank case (Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum). In today s aircraft some of the same materials are used especially aluminum. This case study will focus on one item used within many small engine aircraft; a servo bracket. A servo bracket sounds like an insignificant piece of hardware but in fact a servo bracket is a very important part of the airplane, with a very long life cycle. The servo bracket holds the servo which is connected directly to the airplane s control system, thus putting the bracket under continuous tension and stress. The bracket itself is not responsible for the entire strain of the control system, this is accomplished by using much more rigid braces, and the braces take the brunt of the stress. The bracket s construction has to be from material that is formable, light and semi strong. The materials must be machine formable in order
  • 12. Literary Analysis Of Pablo Picasso s Guernica Julius Byla Hake English 101 10/22/17 Picasso s Guernica Throughout time paintings have been used to record events, communicate ideas or evoke an emotional response. Pablo Picasso s painting Guernica does just this. Guernica was created to bring attention to the Nazi bombing of the town of Guernica, Spain during the Spanish civil war in the second half of the 1930s. Its exhibition was used to provide relief and a call against the horrors of war. Through its visual elements and symbolic concepts, Guernica depicts the chaos and aftermath of the bombing of the city and the need to bring about change over the tragedies of war. Standing at a massive seven feet by twenty five feet, this black and white painting depicts a massacre of the bombing of the town of Guernica. The composition of the work is a dimly lit space, the only light coming from an eye shaped light at center top of the painting and a woman holding a lantern next to it. From left to right, the scene contains a screaming bull beneath it a woman holding a dead child. In the center there is a mangled horse pierced by spear and below it, the mangled body of a fallen soldier. To the right are three women, one crawling towards the light, above her is a woman leaning out of a window holding a lit lantern and the other screaming while falling from a burning building. Guernica captures the brutal chaos of the bombing with its physical action and intended symbolism. Being black and white, the painting represents the somber
  • 13. How Scientists Can Most Efficiently Complete Organ... Abstract: The purpose of this experiment is to test how scientists can most efficiently complete organ printing. In this lab, the cells will be suspended in a substrate called sodium alginate collagen, hydrogel, and other reactants. These materials will react to then embed the cells to their goal location. Then, the cells will be able to be fixated into layers. These layers will then come together and form tissues, which according to biological organization will form organs. The inkjet bioprinter allows for this to occur. Tiny inkdroplets form a digital design for the organ printing, and in horizontal sheets, the organ is created tissue by tissue. This lab will test to see which percent concentration of the sodium alginate collagen composite will prove to be most effective when organ printing. The dependent factor that will determine the conclusion will be the percent of efficiency of cell survival rate. Four trials will be completed in which the same organ is printed and all factors are kept constant, except for the percent concentration of the substrate. Introduction: In the past, the only way to replace diminished cells, tissues, and organs was from organ transplantation. An organ donor was needed, and the tissues would be surgically removed from the donated body and placed into the recipient. Due to the current research being conducted, it is believed that tissue engineering and organ printing can contribute to the process of improving and saving lives.
  • 14. Benito Cereno Analysis In the novella, Benito Cereno, Herman Melville demonstrates the conflicting issue of racism and how it has been a part of our society for centuries. In the novella, we go on an adventure with two captains of Spanish descent and an overpowering amount of African Americans slaves. Melville has captured the importance of the slave trade and the risks that have been taken over time by African Americans trying to earn some justice within their lives. As a reader, we are shown the heart wrenching experiences a slave trader and an African American must endure over the bloody trading seas. Melville creates a clear picture that Americans over history were not always the heroes. This novella, shows the morality of our American history and how race has created such a strong role within our culture. There once was a time of darkness that still lingers in American culture today. This darkness has been told by the ones who have lived these experiences. Melville shows us that there is always another side to be told and that is the side of the ones who have been captured. The side of the ones who don t have a voice unless it is out of extreme measures and this is what Benito Cereno demonstrates. This novella, shows how far one of another race had to overcome before finally being heard and for them to be followed as a leader and not the other way around. When reading Benito Cereno, it starts out with Captain Delano discovering a ship floating in unbearable conditions close to docking on shore. Delano thinking the ship is in need of some serious help. Delano boards this mystery ship and learns to find out that it is a slave ship. However, he begins to notice something odd about the ship. This isn t a normal slave trading ship. There is no order or direct order from the Captain of the ship, Benito Cereno. When commanding a slave ship during this time frame, slaves were in shackles and locked up. It was the common protocol, to treat the slaves nothing less than an animal would be treated. However, Delano begins to notice with his first glances upon board that slaves are on top deck, not chained and armed with weapons. Hatchet polishers, wondering why such an interruption should be allowed, especially on that part of the

  • 16. The War On Drugs And Drugs Essay The war on drugs have been a critical issue that has repeatedly held a great debate topic. It was in the 1906 when the first act against drug was put into effect with the Pure Food and Drug Act which required all over the counter medication to have label of its ingredients. Under President Nixon the first executive branch office to coordinate drugpolicy was formed and the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act was put into place. Two years following that the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) was formed. The funding for the war on drugs had greatly increased over the decades and has reached the record of an annual budget of $17.8 billion which occurred in 1998. Much of the budget is used to intervene drug flow on the U.S. border and for interdiction according to Cooper s 1993 War on Drugs article. Some people agree that having more man power at the U.S. border will help eliminate the U.S. drug problem while others argue that even though having more people working the border increases drug seizures there are still drugs continuing to enter the United States. These may be the very people that believe in using the budget to provide more educational programs to the younger generation and having prevention programs will help those that may have become a drug user if not a addict. The last group of American do not believe either of those programs have worked in the past and will not work in the future. With those options gone the only thing left to do it to legalize
  • 17. Even in His Rise to Power, Wang Lung Respected and Loved... In traditional Chinese culture, there has always been a strong connection with the earth. The earth gives life and helps to sustain it, and in the end the earth is where you return. For Wang Lung, this was a concept easily grasped. He loved the land, and even in his rise to power, his connection to it remained. When he was most at peace, he was working the land. The times he grew restless were those when he was unable to farm. Often with the gain of monetary wealth, the decline of morality follows closely behind. This is magnified in the lives of Wang Lung s three sons. The eldest son becomes obsessed with women and is eager to satisfy the desires of the flesh. For the rich, this is a common thing. Once you tire of the beautiful maid... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Has it ever been more true that money is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10)? And it is odd that in a culture with such a strong sense of duty and honor for their ancestors that as their father was dying they were planning on how to divide up and sell the land; the land that had given them so much, and the same that had put them through school and fed and clothed them and was the only thing to remain when they had nothing else? This was something Wang Lung could not communicate with his sons. They seemed to think that their wealth would go far beyond the ground from which it came. Maybe they could not remember the months they spent in the hut, or when they had no choice but to eat gruel made from the soil. They did not know how fleeting wealth was as their father had learned earlier in life. Wang Lung himself was not exempt from these same sins as seen in his sons, however. Throughout his life he had two constant forces working within him, not unlike the traditional concept of yin and yang. Yin and yang is believed to be in everything and is the essence of all naturally occurring things. They are opposite but cannot exist without each other, so the struggle is to find the perfect balance. Like with Wang Lung, when he only has the land and his earthen house but no wealth or the misfortune of a drought, he suffers. He cannot feed his family and cannot live. But when there is too much

In his seventh book, when discussing the concept of knowledge, he is virtually addressing the clichГ© seeing is believing , while attempting to validate the roots of our knowledge. Behind the prisoners, there was a raised path. Above the walkway was a platform, where there was a fire burning, and in front of the fire, was a parapet, which as Plato described it , was like that of the screens Puppeteers use to hide themselves and have the puppets be visible . Each and every day, the prisoners see nothing, but the shadows of the objects and people passing between them and the fire. For their entire lives, the prisoners are exposed to nothing but those images and the sounds made by those walking around. These shadows are all they have ever known, in essence; these shadows are their only reality . As time passed, the prisoners would grow accustomed to these sights, later on the prisoners would match the objects with names and the familiar sounds to the images of the shadows (514; Appendix A). In discussing the allegory with Glaucon, Socrates toys around the concept of what could happen to a prisoner should they be released after having lived their lives in the cave, with the only knowledge the possess of the world, are the images and sounds by the wall. The similarities between The Cave and The Matrix are too uncanny. The description of the cave above, which is discussed in the first paragraph of Plato s seventh book, can be portrayed similarly in

Trent Bridge The Veteran s Skyway Gateway to the Trent Bridge In the early 1990s, the aging swing bridge crossing the Trent River in Trenton, Ontario was replaced with a continuous span steel box girder bridge. The unique part of this process was that the new bridge was built adjacent to the existing swing bridge and slid laterally into place; this was the first time in North America that this technique had been done. The process consisted of five mains steps; first, the planning of such an undertaking, second, deciding on how to proceed, third, constructing the new bridge on site, fourth, removing the old swing bridge, and finally, sliding the new bridge into place, all the while ensuring minimal impact to the vehicular traffic through town and ... Thus, City councillors, working with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and engineers from Declan Corporation of Toronto, conceived the plan of buildinga new bridge adjacent to the swing bridge, and later sliding it into place (Anderson Trenkler, 1991). But, before the construction of the new bridge could commence, engineers had to reverse the direction of the swing rotation of the existing bridge, as it swung directly towards the site the new bridge would be built and would impede on the construction process (Anderson Trenkler, 1991). Once the planning was finalized and the site prepped, construction could begin. In the spring of 1989, the construction of the new bridge began. The base of the Trent River was a flotilla of barges carrying the workers, cranes and equipment needed to prepare the temporary pillars that would support the new bridge, as well as maneuver the huge steel girders into place for the new bridge. It was an awesome sight for the entire town, as we watched barges float the steel girders into the harbour, one section being 74 meters in length and two more that were 54 metres each. The new steel box girder bridge had a total length of 182 metres and weighed 2,950 metric tonnes (Anderson Trenkler, 1991). Temporary cement pillars were poured to support

One of the hallmarks of any great society is what new or improved knowledge of the world and how it works that the society can contribute. Closely allied with this concept is the spirit of entrepreneurship, considered one of the greatest qualities of the American culture. Edison did not value ideas for their own sake, as ideas for inventions can be easy enough to acquire; he knew that the real work came from ...the long laborious trouble of working them out and producing apparatus that is commercial (Millard 43). This process of working things out led Edison to establish one of the earliest successful industrial research centers in America at his West Orange laboratory in New Jersey. It was here that Edison and company pioneered many of the technologies associated with his name. Inventions such as the motion picture camera and the phonograph were developed here; from their humble technological beginnings, these devices have given rise to the motion picture and musical entertainment industries and are ubiquitous in their modern applications. Edison realized that the key to being a successful inventor is not in making things but in acquiring sufficient financial backing to transform genius into reality on a large scale. In this area, Edison proved himself to be perhaps more adept as a procurer of capital and support than as an inventor. Contos Thesis Abstract The Caenorhabditis elegans LET 23, which is an Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) receptor, controls multiple developmental pathways. In humans, EGF receptor mutations are implicated in a large number of cancers due to excess signaling promoting cell growth and cell division. Recent work has shown that in C. elegans LET 23 may also affect lipid production, specifically that of the phospholipid phosphatidylcholine. To investigate the role of the LET 23 receptor on lipid production, I have examined the cellular location of a fluorescent tagged SBP 1 marker under different conditions within the worm and from these inferred levels of lipid production. I will discuss my results and their impact on our understanding of EGF signaling and lipid biosynthesis. Thesis Intro: As a whole the world is becoming more aware of how fats affect the body. Not only are lipids a key element in cell membranes, they also lead to many issues regarding health. Obesity is an ever increasing risk factor for many diseases including type II diabetes, cardiac disease, and some forms of cancer (Kopelman 2000). As obesity transitions from little known problem into a full blown global epidemic, it is important to understand how lipids are synthesized and regulated within the body. Lipid synthesis pathways involve a complex interaction between the endocrine system, tissues, nutrient storage and

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This restriction of interests is clearly displayed in the captivity narrative of Mrs. Rowlandson. One example of this is her specific detail regarding her sleeping situation and detailing of anything involving her body or emotion. As mentioned above, Puritans placed a great deal of emphasis on the chastity of a woman, meaning that Rowlandson was compelled to record everything that happened to her in order to protect herself and her chastity by including her womanly feelings such as her grief from having her child killed and having to leave her family behind. Another example of sectionalism within the narrative can be found in Rowlandson s account of the specific locations that she traveled to and the culture of the people that she was with. She frequently mentions locations of Indian towns and the barbaric behavior of the people living in them in order to both provide details concerning the land around her home and to create a significant divide between herself and the immoral group she was with. Human Spinal Deformities Using 3d Reconstruction Techniques Literature Survey on Human Spinal Deformities using 3D Reconstruction Techniques Introduction: Spine and its deformities: Scoliosis is a complex three dimensional (3 D) deformation of the trunk that requires orthopedic treatment in 5 out of 1000 persons [1]. It is described as a lateral deviation of the spine (Fig. 1), combined with asymmetric deformation and axial rotation of the vertebrae, deformation of the rib cage and possibly of the pelvis. The human spine is divided into cervical (7 vertebrae C1 C7), thoracic (12 vertebrae Tl T12), and lumbar (5 vertebrae L1 L5) sections above a fused sacrum (Fig. 2). While the spine normally has no lateral curvature, there are normal side view curves including lumbar lordosis, thoracic kyphosis and cervical lordosis. Scoliotic curves are considered thoracic when the apex lies between T2 and T11, thoracolumbar at T12 L1, and lumbar from L2 L5. Each vertebra consists of an anterior weight bearing vertebral body and posterior elements that protect the spinal cord and enable muscular and ligamentous attachments (Fig. 3). Particularly in severe scoliotic curves, asymmetric loads on the vertebrae encourage asymmetric growth of the vertebral elements, with one result being that despite a substantial underlying spinal curve the spinous processes may deform to produce a relatively straight line on the back surface. The spine, composed of vertebrae connected by fluid filled intervertebral discs, is a loose and

As the state government allocates generous assistance to those who fall below the poverty line, people in such a position become increasingly reliant upon supplementary income from the state. Therefore instead of reducing poverty, the state simply promotes it. In fact, California s housing costs are some of the highest in the nation, including utilities.

The hustle and bustle of public transportation and smog released by an over populated commuter based region, have significantly lowered air quality standards. Henceforth, health concerns have risen for all Angelinos. Research has observed that there is a serious influx of pollutants in the air that could have damaging results both on adults and children alike. Well, Voldemort s going to try other ways of coming back, isn t he? I mean, he hasn t gone, has he? No, Harry, he has not.
