If hatching viability is affected by the amount of motor oil in the environment of the brine shrimp
eggs, then when the amount of motor oil is increased the hatching viability will decrease.
Experimental Design
The independent variable was the amount of motor oil in 2% salt solution because it is the variable
that was being tested and purposefully manipulated. The dependent variable was the hatching
viability of the brine shrimp tested (which was calculated by adding the number of brine shrimp
swimming at 24 hours to the number of brine shrimp swimming at 48 hours, and then divided by
the total number of eggs initially placed in the petri dish). The control group was a petri dish of
brine shrimp in 30 ml of 2% salt solution with no motor oil. The constants, or variables that need
to be controlled, were the salinity percentage of the salt solution (2%), the amount of salt solution
in each petri dish (30 ml), the total time the brine shrimp were left in the petri dishes (48 hours),

Carver, is as detailed and intricate as the stories he wrote. He was born in Oregon in 1938. His
father was a sawmill worker. He married one year out of high school and had two children. He
worked various jobs to support his small family and in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s
he began drinking heavily. When he got his drinking problem under control, he began to teach at
the University of Texas at El Paso and Syracuse University. He went on to win a literary award in
1983 and focused on his writing full time later. He wrote Cathedral that year and Where I m
Calling From in 1969. He died at the age of fifty of lung cancer. His stories are very realistic and

I watched from the booth as the main actor approached the window with his pistol. He raised it
to the glass panel and I heard the magic words from the stage manager whisper into my headset. I
quickly pressed the button and filled the theatre with the loud sound of shattering glass. I could
hear the audience gasp at the sound. A powerful euphoria consumed me. Of course, the show was
far from over, but I felt like taking off my headset and slamming it to the ground like a winning
touchdown. I executed the problematic cue that caused me grief during rehearsals. Fortunately, we
didn t have any other problems. The cast members were rewarded with thunderous applause and a
standing ovation. I cheered with the audience, but I couldn t help feeling envious of the actors. That
feeling quickly dissipated when the cast raised their arms, gesturing towards the tech booth. They
acknowledged our hard work and shared the wealth. After all, the marionette cannot move without
the strings. Though I was invisible to the audience, that doesn t mean I wasn t a big part of the
show. It was only opening night, but I didn t feel as nervous. I knew that with such a strong reaction
