When I returned to my undergraduate studies, I wanted to continue to pose scientific
questions, experiment with and optimize variables, deduce answers and share my
research with others. This desire motivated me to work toward an honors thesis
during my last three semesters of college, under the direction of Dr. Himali
Jayathilake at Mount Holyoke College. This work examined applications of iron
nanoparticles as potential components for data storage. In an effort to increase
computer storage density and stability, scientists bonded iron nanoparticles (each
hypothesized to store a single bit of data on a hard drive) to surfactant molecules, and
assembled them into a 2 dimensional landscape on a substrate. I

Cancer is an unusual growth of cells that try to proliferate in an un contained way
and sometimes it also spreads through the body. Cancer isn t just one thing, it has
more than 150 different cancers. Testicular cancer is a disease of testicular cells
becoming abnormal in one or two of the testicles. This canceris most common to men
ages 20 to 35 years old.
The exact reason for why people get testicular cancer is not yet known, but risk
factors for getting it are kidney and penile abnormalities. Having testicular cancer
in past family history is a risk factor. Also from being Caucasian there is a bigger
chance of getting testicular cancer. A sign of this cancer is the swelling of the
testicles Swelling of the testicles. Back pains, abdomen, and groin pains also in most
cases leads to testicular cancer. Bad eating habits and smoking aren t yet proven
reasons to the risk of getting testicular cancer but it probably doesn t help the odds
either.
There are five signs that a family member or someone known could have cancer.
One, A lump in the testicle area, this sign is the most common out of the other four.
Two, Swelling of the testicle or the scrotum area. Three, Shrinking of testicles. Four,

Removal of the cancer in the testes, includes, Surgery, radiation therapy, or
chemotherapy. There are side effects to these treatments as well, like infertility and
the effect of sexual functions. These side effects are only due from having surgery
but others that are unknown can be from radiation or chemo therapy.
Staging cancer helps determine how it will grow in the body. CT, Mri, and PET
scans help determine where the Cancer is. There are 4 stages to Testicular cancer 0
III, III meaning the most advanced stage of this cancer. Some levels have sub levels
