Dualistic Social Roles In Victor Hugo s Les MisГ©rables
In Victor Hugo s novel Les MisГ©rables, a man named Jean Valjean is imprisoned for nineteen
years for stealing a loaf of bread. Though he goes in a good man, he comes out troubled, judged,
and angry. The simple kindness and compassion showed to him by a bishop inspires him to change
and rise above his past. Throughout his book, Victor Hugo uses metaphor, symbolism, and diction
to emphasize the remarkably non dualistic nature between the saint and the sinner, highlighting
society s divine obligation to treat one another with mercy and love. By using metaphor,
symbolism, and diction, Hugo is able to shed light on a social issue of his day in a way that
allows the reader relate to and understand a misunderstood class of society. The passage... Show

Being a religious leader, one might expect him to be very black and white about good and evil,
yet he is not (at least not in the way that one might expect). He has the authority to judge others
but he leaves it to God. Instead of focusing on the duality of religion (righteousness and sin), he
decides to focus on the non dualistic side of religion: the people and their worth as individuals.
This perspective was very different from the church of Hugo s day. For this, he would get a lot of
complaints and attacks from the Catholic church concerning Les MisГ©rables, perhaps signifying
the powerful influence of his choice in character. As the Bishop s doctrine is summarized, Hugo
continues to implement literary devices such as personification and imagery to help the reader
visualize the sinner s condition. Man has upon him flesh, the Bishop states, which is at once his
burden and his temptation. This flesh is personified so as to become an actual living figure of
opposition. He drags it with him and yields to it, the Bishop teaches, He must watch it, cheek it,
repress it, and obey it only at the last extremity . The flesh , of course, symbolizes the struggle of the
natural man and the temptations that the sinner succumbs to. Hugo s choice of words like drag and
burden generate the feeling of heaviness found in the temptation that the mortal man bears.

A Befriended Brother in Mansfield Park by Jane Austen
William Price is well regarded in Mansfield Park by Jane Austen. He is the brother of Fanny
Price, whom is the main character of the novel. Fanny is taken in by her uncle, Sir Thomas
Bertram and leaves her biological family, which is both unfortunate as well as fortunate for
Fanny. By living with the Bertrams, she is allowed a better education and to be raised in a higher
form of etiquette due to the fact that her family did not have as much money as the Bertrams did.
The ill fated part of her story is that she must leave her brother, William who, in the result, gains
access into the navy because of his connections with Fanny s adopted family.
Jane Austen writes a novel that both pushes at the romantic standards that women had to obey to
while also focusing on a great deal of love within the family. The love that Fanny has for her
brother right until the end of the novel is striking and heart warming. William is the older brother
that every little sister wants to look up to, he is not only an idol to Fanny but a role model to the
readers of the narrative. Austen creates characters to dislike and characters that convey emotion.
Lady Bertram is one character of which the reader s dislike does not stop for due to her mean
attitude towards Fanny and the fact that she is almost constantly sitting on the couch with her pug,
which she treats as if she loves more than her own children. Other characters, such as William,
allow for the novel to not be one of complete hate amongst

A Separate Peace Friendship is a combination between admiration, respect, jealousy, and
resentment. When the friendship in A Separate Peace begins to blur the identity of one of the boys
as he begins to assimilate the life of the other. How does this friendship between both boys begin to
change the identity of one and affect their relationship? In the beginning of the story the friendship
between Gene and Finny seems fueled by Gene s envy and resentment for his friend s dominating
spirit. As Finny demonstrates his physical prowess, Gene feels the need to demonstrate his
academic prowess. In return Gene believes that Finny envies his superior academic achievements

Brinker now tries to prove that Gene is responsible for Finny breaking his leg. He calls both
boys after school hours asking them for details of what happened that day. Finny s perceptions
of the incident remain blurred he cannot speak about the incident and Gene claims that he
cannot remember specific details about it. They then bring is Leper who was seen earlier that
day and he begins referring to Gene. Finny states that he does not care about the facts and runs
out of the room. While running Finny then again falls down the stairs and breaks his leg once
again. Gene later that night sneaks into the infirmary to see Finny, who angrily sends him away.
The next morning Gene apologizes to Finny and takes the blame for everything and explains that
nothing arises from hatred. Finny accepts Gene s statements and the two are friends again.
During surgery for Finny s leg some blood marrow enters Finny s bloodstream and kills him.
Gene is not affected by Finny s death as he feels as he has become a part of Finny. Gene reflects on
the things that affect the human heart that only Finny s curse was immune to. Thus the boy s
relationship becomes a model of codependency with each feeding off each

Hurricane Intervention Paper
South Florida is the southernmost part of the state of Florida and is one of three (3) commonly
used directional regions, the others being central and north Florida. South Florida includes the
densely populated areas of Miami, Florida Keys, among others. Florida and by extension the United
States, have experienced hurricanes dating back to 1900 with Hurricane Galveston and has
recorded a myriad of devastating hurricanes in its history. Hurricanes are not a new phenomenon to
South Florida, with the first devastation occurring in September 1919 killing at least eight hundred
(800) people in Key West. The most recent record was that of Hurricane Andrew in 1992, which
was responsible for twenty three (23) deaths in the United Statesand $25 billion in damages in
South Florida. Despite South Florida s historical trend, the region has not experienced a major
storm in ten (10) years and the community may be ill prepared to coordinate efforts against a

This project will outline the design of an intervention for hurricane preparedness in the City of

Essay On The Nature Of Frankenstein
In Insurmountable barriers to our union : Homosocial male bonding, homosexual panic, and death
on the ice in Frankenstein James Holt McGavran makes a compelling argument about the nature of
Frankenstein s creature in Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. He argues that the creature represents his
creators repressed sexuality and that Victor s rejection of the creature stems from homosexual
panic. The revulsion Victor feels is due to being faced with a physical manifestation of his
sexuality and being forced to confront it. McGavran claims that the mutual obsession with one
another that the creature and Victor share is due to attraction, and that the creature represents an
ideal lover for Victor. He goes on to offer proof of both Shelley s... Show more content on

this idea helps provide clarity to one of the most contested moments in the text, which is why
exactly Victor turns on his creation immediately after seeing him when he had previously
desired it with an ardour that far exceeded moderation; but now that I had finished, the beauty of
the dream vanished and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart (Shelley, 39). McGavran
argues that it is the fact that the creature is a physical representation of Victors sexuality that
forces him to have to acknowledge his homosexual desire. McGavran points out that Victor had
selected his features as beautiful (Shelley, 39) which means that the creature has not always
revolted his creator (McGavran, 47). This reinforces both the idea of homosexual panic and
McGavran s argument that the creature represents his ideal male lover (47) as Shelley makes a
point of saying that Victor wanted his creature to be attractive. Further, after the creation of the
creature, Victor: travers[es] the streets, without any clear conception of where [he] was or what
[he] was doing. [His] heart palpitated in the sickness of fear; and [he] hurried on with irregular
steps, not daring to look about [him] (Shelley, 40). That he is too afraid to look about him suggests
that he is filled with shame over his realization of the nature of his creation. In the article,
McGavran touches on feminist

Malnutrition Around the World For most us Americans, knowing when we re going to eat next
is something we very rarely think of, and when we do think about being hungry we still know
where our food is coming from. Three big meals a day, and a few snacks in between, is how
most of us live. It s hard for us to imagine what its like for those who go days eating very little or
nothing at all. But unfortunately that s how it is for most of the world and surprisingly it happens
in the United Sates as well. There are many reasons malnutrition can happen, and it happens to

malnourished people in America, it is much worse all around the world, mostly in third world
countries. There are three predominate reasons why third world countries are hit hard with
malnutrition, 1) poor families aren t given government help, 2) difficulties with economy and 3)
higher food prices. ( 2012 World Hunger... ) As stated in the website 2012 World Hunger and
Poverty Facts and Statistics, in the world there are 925 million hungry people, most of them in
Asia, the Pacific and Africa. These people live on $1.25 or less a day. Minimum wage is $7.25
in the U.S., and most people work 8 hours a day, so that means they would be getting fifty eight
dollars a day. It would take someone in a third world country about forty seven days to make
what someone makes in America in 8 hours. And most of them spend that money on food and
medical needs, but $1.25 is not enough. In the United States if a family doesn t have enough
money for medical help, they can still go see a doctor, but in other countries it s very different.
More than 30,000 children die per year from preventable sickness because they can t go see a

Why Was The Gunpowder Plot A Conspiracy
On 22nd August 1642, King Charles I declared war against his enemies, in Parliament. In the
Civil War which followed one man in ten were killed. Many people died of starvation. Others
had their house, their land or all their possessions destroyed. How had the situation come about
where Englishmen were prepared to fight against each other, and even against members of their
own families ? Charles s reign started off badly, in 1625 Charles married a French Catholic
princess, Henrietta Maria. This was very unpopular since Parliament questioned the religion of
Charles s children especially if they were brought up by a Catholic mother. In 1629, Charles tried
to dissolve Parliament. He then ruled without them for eleven years, until 1640. Some historians
say that his policies during this time were very unpopular. One method he used was the Ship
Money Tax . Coastal counties had to pay tax to help improve the Navy during times of warfare. In

Mini Essay In 1605, a group of young and angry Catholics decided that they had enough of King
James I, and decided to take over the kingdom of England. They planned to destroy the Protestant
government by murdering the most important men in the kingdom. Many people since think that
the Gunpowder Plot was a conspiracy theory to make the Catholics even more unpopular in society.
Others think that the traditional story that they had been taught for generations was true. In order to
find out we have to consider the actions that make the Gunpowder Plot look like a conspiracy
theory and the traditional story. Firstly it is important to understand the traditional story. A group of
Catholics were angry with King James and wanted to assaninate him. They decided to blow up the

Essay on The Controversy Surrounding Stem-cell Research
Stem cell research is a complex subject. First of all you need to know there are three main
categories of stem cells. Embryonic, Fetal and Adult; not everyone is for or against all of these
types. There are different sets on pros and cons to each of these types and I will address a few for
each type. I believe the pros outweigh the cons in each of these and stem cellresearch is very
beneficial for medical purposes. The term stem cell research was first used by gist Alexander
Maksimov, a Russian histologist in 1908. His postulate was made in Berlin at the congress of
hematological society and proposed the existence of haematopoietic stem cells. Most was quiet in

that fetuses should be conceived just to be aborted for this reason but if a woman chooses to

Embryonic stem cell lines are from the inner cell mass of a blastoyst, that is, a very young
embryo. Probably around four to five days old in humans and consisting of no less than 50 and
no more than 150 cells. When given sufficient and necessary stimulation stem cells can develop
into more than 200 types of cells in the adult body, this gives then potential to cure numerous
diseases. While there are currently no approved treatments using embryonic stem cells, they
remain a theoretically potential source for regenerative and tissue replacement after injury and
disease. The variety of cells they can develop into makes limitless possibilities for medicine.
Turning ES cells into usable cells while avoiding transplant rejection are some problems scientists
will have to work through. But like for organ transplants and anti rejection drugs it is possible
these obstacles could be overcome. Next, Adult Stem cells do not cause anywhere near as much
controversy as embryonic stem cells because no organisms are destructed in the procedures. Also
known as a somatic stem cell, adult stem cells are characterized by any cell found in a developed

The audience is given a typical scene that a film, which follows the superhero conventions, may
contain, films such as The Dark Knight (Wired). Though the film begins with a scene following
a superhero genre convention, it is immediately undermined when the man clad in the superhero
costume ultimately falls to his death. The scene is utilized to emphasize the point that the film
isn t another typical superhero movie, what happens in real life will occur in the movie. The
man trying to be super instead of a hero is described as one with a history of mental instability.
The film ridicules the idea of a superhero being one with superhuman powers. As Mathew Vaughn
describe in his interview, Dave is an every day kid, [a] peter parker and doesn t get bitten by a
spider (Empire). Mathew Vaughn believes that a superhero can exist in real life and that it can be
any person who s extraordinary, not through the surface, but through the heroism of one s self. The
film emphasizes this point by making Dave, Big Daddy, and Hit Girl, the three characters that
displays the most heroism, different from the other characters.
The difference between the characters is made apparent early on in the movie. In the scene, when
Dave mentions to his friends Todd and Marty that it s not impossible to putting on a mask and
helping people, his friends describes his idea as psycho. Dave s friends ridicules at his perception

The Effects Of Torture On The Society Of Modern Technology
When one thinks of torture, what is imagined? Perhaps they think of those wooden machines in
the museums that they cannot even comprehend the use for, or the iron maiden, a cinematic

presented. Torture, regardless, is a gruesome term with gruesome connotations. In our progressive
society of modern technology, it is thankfully an issue of the past. Or... is it? It s not, we know it

Maccabees 13:5 where Menelaus had been thrown into ashes to struggle and suffocate as he

regardless of what or why, as long as it classifies as torture. The words are occasionally
interchangeable, as every case of lawful torture is a punishment but not every punishment is
necessarily torture. Historically, judicial torture has been used for ages, albeit differing in how it
is carried out today. Torture for the purpose of criminal punishment first emerged in the twelfth
century in Northern Italy when prosecution done privately by popes and royalty on criminals
became prevalent and under threat when their political authority became more centralized. During
the remaining years of the Middle Ages, the process spread to much of Europe

papal legislation with the purpose of controlling those who strayed from the church, and
eventually, this eventually extended to secular (nonreligious) crime as well. Early medieval law
had more severe criminal cases dealt with by ordeal, oath, or judicial combat. The idea of it was
that God would intervene constantly in the lives of people, and would so also in court. Though it

The Knight of the Cart: Motives behind the Story
In ChrГ©tien De Troyes story, The Knight of the Cart, a central focus of the plot is on courtly love
and traditions that are upheld in the 12th century. However, ChrГ©tien s intentions, emotions, and
thoughts about these traditions are unclear to the modern reader. ChrГ©tien s tone, use of
passages, descriptions, diction and other features, allow us to speculate some of his thoughts and
feelings. The novel opens up with what seems to be disclaimers by ChrГ©tien. Since my lady of

ChrГ©tien presents very exaggerated and near comical scenes of Lancelot expressing his love.
Initially Lancelot s mind oscillates between reason and love but eventually love takes hold and
shapes all of his decisions. In a plague like manner we see Lancelot s decisions and thoughts
become more and more irrational. From attempting suicide multiple times to thinking he can defeat
hundreds of knights at once, Lancelot becomes a changed man. He values the ideals of love over
his religion, his knighthood, his honor, and even his life. In sum, ChrГ©tien portrays Lancelot s
love in a very honorable way at the surface level, but there is textual evidence to speculate that he
had ulterior motives in presenting this story: to portray courtly love as foolish, overbearing, and
ultimately detrimental to one s

Essay On Sport Burnout
Secondary Research Playing tennis, or any sport, year round at a competitive level is strenuous not
only to a developing athlete s body but to their mind. Because of this mental strain, student athletes
that specialize in a certain sport are often susceptible to a phenomenon called sport burnout. For
many elite athletes, burnout is a constant threat due to the hypercompetitive nature of modern
sports. There are many variables and conditions that can lead to sportburnout, but by identifying
and combating these variables, athletes can stay in top physical and mental condition.
The first step to combating sport burnout is to have a full understanding of what it is and what
causes it. The connotation of the word burnout invokes dramatic images that make it seem extra

Reducing Poverty Essay
Reducing Poverty
Poverty is the United States is a major issue and continues to worsen as housing is becoming less
affordable for many people across the nation. People that do find housing are often restricted to
low income areas that have few opportunities. In the low income areas there are few jobs and the
quality of schools are poor and keep the people in the cycle. To offset this cycle money needs to be
put into the education system in these lower income areas to offset this cycle. Education allows
for people to have more opportunities and would increase the incentive to live in low income

Death and the Maiden
The Polanski film Death and the Maiden is a wonderful and intelligent interpretation of Ariel
Dorfman s human rights problem play. Polanski has produced, in this film, an exceptional piece of
direction, in which his own personal, emotional input is evident. The main theme of the play is an
extremely personal one for both playwright (and scriptwriter) and director. Both Dorfman and
Polanski have had to face and flee the horrors of dictatorship and human rightsviolations: Dorfman
in Chile, under General Augusto Pinochet, and Polanski in Poland under the Nazis. But despite this
similarity in past experience, significannot differences exist between the original play and the film.
Apart from the specific techniques of lighting and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Weaver s powerful acting conveys the unmistakable tension associated with an incredible amount of
suppressed anger. It is not until the following scenes, when she is finally confronted with the cause
of that anger, however, that we see its full magnitude and destructive potential.
In the surreal, dim lighting of her bedroom Paulina is shaken by a strangely disturbing laugh
upon recognising Roberto Miranda s voice as that of her tormentor. This moment sees the birth or
manifestation of another facet of Paulina s character, the part of Paulina s mind that fantasized
about doing to her torturers what they had done to her. This is the unbelievably unreasonable
Paulina; she is a Fury, a mythical deity, the embodiment of vengeance, unsusceptible to male
logic or opportunistic, careerist rationalisation. Polanski makes Paulina throw the car over the
cliff edge. In doing this she is not only destroying a phallic symbol, and thus undermining
Roberto s sexuality and any claims he has on sexual dominance or superiority, she is destroying a
perfect symbol of the male thirst for power and control, and the pragmatic logic to which her need
for revenge has been sacrificed, into the infinite, chaotic abyss that defies all these principles, and
unquestionably swallows it up. In doing this she breaks the railing, civilized society has created to
guard itself

The Main Causes of Global Warming
Global warming is the rise of temperature of the Earth. The main cause of global warming is the
greenhouse effect. The way humans behave is the reason that greenhouse gas trap more heat.
Automobiles are the main cause of the greenhouse gases to to trap the heat. Global warming doesn t
completely mean a constant rise in temperature, it is mainly a change in temperature.in patterns.
The two major greenhouse gases include methane and carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide and methane
normally come from Earth s atmosphere. The greenhouse gases are enhanced because of our human
activity. The greenhouse gases are known as synthetic chemicals.

Global warming heats the ocean temperature and deteriorates the reefs leaving fish without
homes. The reason the heat affects the reefs is because it bleaches them. The heating of the
ocean can also give the reefs several different types of diseases. The diseases are bad because the
reefs support entire ecosystems. The reefs are capable of absorbing carbon dioxide which makes
them sick and kills them eventually. The ice caps are melting due to global warming, which means
water levels rise. When water levels rise it is harder for reefs to get the sunlight they need to survive.
Global warming is causing our main deserts to dry up even more. It is causing all of the the
water in the desert to evaporate constantly. Some areas out there where it is still wet will receive
long dry weather until precipitation occurs. Water levels are expected to drop nearly 30% in the
next few years. Warm air in the tropics is heating up which means there will be more tropical
thunderstorms, this will give the deserts and other dry places not in the tropic region a longer and
tougher drought.
Global warming can mean getting warmer, and when it gets warmer the water evaporates into the
air which gives hurricanes more water and stronger winds to work with. Future hurricanes are
expected to be more similar to the strong ones in the past. For example the tornados will be more
like Katrina and Irene. The hurricanes will be a serious problem for people living

I Am An Open And Accepting Mind
Please Read This With an Open and Accepting Mind
I am going to try to paint a picture in your mind. Picture a student that has all A s and
B s, has a healthy, regular eating schedule, goes to sleep at a reasonable time, good social life
with people he enjoys being around, and is stress free, always waking up happy without a worry on
his mind. Now picture a student that struggles in school, never really has a huge appetite, has
trouble going to sleep at a reasonable time, wakes up feeling groggy and doesn t want to go to
school to learn, he is unable to hang out with the people he enjoys, he always has some type of
stress level that does not allow him to enjoy life how he should, and doesn t always feel like he is
as responsible as he should be? Now which one of those students do you think uses Cannabis?
Student 1 or Student 2? You re probably thinking student 2 right? Well you re wrong if that is the
case. Actually, both of those students are I, James Corbett, and I am going to be telling you how

First off, I am going to say this is not an essay where I am going to try to tell you all of the health

The Impact Of Communication On The Workplace Essay
2.0 Findings and discussion
2.1 Communication in the work place
In management, planning, leading, organising and having control over the organisation requires
one to have good communication skills in order to ensure that fellow colleagues and employees are
able to work efficiently and effectively (Robbins Coulter, 2016). Therefore, in an organisational
context, communication is a medium of either verbal or non verbal communication within a specific
context (Louw and du Ploy Cilliers, 2014).
2.1.1 Role in the workplace
Communication has several purposes in the work place that include things like negotiating,
conflict management discussing and resolving work issues as well as influencing and
persuading others just to name a few. In the movie Piers Morgan struggles to communicate
effectively with Omarosa as there is no mutual respect between them regarding the work they
both need to do in the work place. In order for an organisation to be successful, it is essential for
both management and subordinates to have clear and good communication skills as for
management it provides a form of power and dominance over employees. In the Apprentice,
Donald Trump is the boss and he assigns managers to every team for specific tasks. In one of the
tasks, Piers Morgan was the project manager of the task and him and Omarosa were on the same
team and were not Seeing Eye to eye and thus Piers had no dominance or power over Omarosa as
there was a lack of mutual respect and cooperation from

The Red Light On The Dashboard Essay
. Suppress your anger. Anger gets a really bad rap, but I kind of love it. I see it as the red light on
the dashboard. It simply means that my needs are not being met. So I don t suppress it: I
acknowledge it and address it.
2. Start telling a story. When you re angry, it s easy (and natural) to start writing a play in which
you re simultaneously the hero, the victim, and the narrator. Don t. Your motto should be just the
facts. Identify what you really know is the case (as opposed to what you think is happening). Take
a clear look at what you are reacting to and make a clear observation, making sure not to mix in
your judgments.
3. Blame a situation or another person. A situation or another person s actions can never make
you feel a certain way, so obviously blaming someone or something for your anger is a red
herring. Remember, feelings are your warning signals, and are always a result of your needs not
being met. As your attention shifts from the stimulus and your immediate reaction (anger) to
identifying which of your needs are not being met, your feelings will shift also.
4. Focus on what you don t want. Don t focus on what s bad about the situation: doing so will
almost certainly keep you stuck there. Think about it: until we figure out what specific things we
do want, it s going to be impossible to ask for them. We re much more likely to judge and blame
others for the bad stuff ( It s her fault! ). Learn to take ownership of your thinking and focus

Advantages Of Communicative Approach
How can the Communicative Approach along with Modern Day Communication Technology
Influence Language and Literacy Development?
Abstract
Although many language educators have surmised that the communicative method along with the
aid of technology is effective in language acquisition, the findings on the use of modern day
technology along with the communicative approach seem to be inconclusive.
According to UNESCO, in the world today there are about 1 billion non literate adults. This 1
billion is approximately 26 percent of the world s adult population. Illiteracy is the inability to
speak or write and it stifles language development. Since the twenty first century, there has been an
increased use of technology globally, this is believed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
M. (2010). Internet Use and Child Development: Validation of the Ecological Techno Subsystem.
Educational
Technology Society, 13 (1), 176 185.
Johnson and Puplampu recently proposed the ecological techno subsystem, a refinement to
Bronfenbrenner s theoretical organization of environmental influences on child development. The
ecological techno subsystem includes child interaction with both living (e.g., peers) and nonliving
(e.g., hardware) elements of communication, information, and recreation technologies in immediate
or direct environments.
Imperial data for this study was collected using a questionnaire that was issued to 128 parents to
give information about their children cognitive development and the use of technology at home.
This investigation reveals that, the home internet use accounted for more of the variance in
children s cognitive development than did indices of socioeconomic status. The ecological techno
subsystem furthers our understanding of environmental influences on child development by
emphasizing the impact of digital technologies on cognitive growth during childhood. Generations

At the moment, the accounting system and financial structure guiding Virgin are disjointed. In fact,

There are no consolidated accounts for the group, the holding companies and other subsidiaries.
Evidently, the financial system that the Virgin group has adopted is rather amorphous.
Attempts to track the financial results of the various Virgin companies are apparently the most
confusing aspect of the Branson s empire. Despite that fact, Branson insists that financing his

The Mapping Of Ip Addresses

internet. The higher level binding effort went on increasing to different level of development up to
the currently used Domain Name System. DNS, being an open source, it is less secured and it has
no means of determining whether domain name data comes from an authorized domain owner. So
these vulnerabilities lead to a number of attacks. Hence, there is a need of securing DNS. Using
Advanced Encryption Standards, it performs normal encryption. By reversing this encryption,
decryption is also performed. Domain Name Systemhas number of workgroups and these

The Popular View Of World War II
The popular view of World War II is of the United States and Great Britain cooperating to defeat
the Axis powers. While it is known that there was a limit in cooperation between the Western
powers and the Soviet Union in terms of military strategy and political goals after the war, the limits
to the cooperation between Britain and the United Statesare less well known. There are several
reasons why the cooperation between the two countries was not as much as it could have been.
Major differences of opinion on which strategy would win the war with the lowest possible

This would continue until the passage of Lend Lease in March of 1941. Strangely enough, when
the Daily Mirror announced that Lend Lease would pass congress, the paper focused more on
Churchill s speech which was credited with the good news. The article stated that moved by
Churchill s plea, give us the tools and we will finish the job, administration leaders in
Washington last night predicted that the British Aid Bill will be made into law on March 1.
However, the fact that Britain had to pay cash for all war material for the first year and a half of
the war reveals that they were receiving much less help from America than popular history would
have us believe.
The limits of cooperation are revealed in the difficulty of the ships for bases deal in 1940. When
Churchill first took office his first concern was for the naval aspect of the war. He was concerned
that if France surrendered and Italy then declared war that Britain would not have enough
destroyers to attend to their needs. This is shown by the fact that the first thing that he asked of
Roosevelt after becoming prime minister was the loan of forty or fifty of [Roosevelt s] older
destroyers to bridge the gap between what we have now and the large new construction we put in
hand at the beginning of the war. Unfortunately it was not that simple.

Deresiewicz knows what is required to go to an Ivy Leagueschool. He states, So extreme are the

Qualitative And Quantitative Research Design
Research and Program Evaluation
This paper will compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative research designs. While giving the
information, I will also elaborate on the types of research designs that they both implore. At the end
of the paper, the reader will have a better understanding for qualitative and quantitative research
designs and when to use each type of design.
Qualitative Research Design
Cresswell (2014) states qualitative methods rely on text and image data, have unique steps in data
analysis, and draw on diverse designs (p. 183). Qualitative research design is a research method
used by researchers studying human behaviors and habits. For example, a counselor generating
some ideas for a new inclusion program might want to study people s behaviors and preferences, to
make sure that the inclusion program might become feasible. Quick and Hall (2011) state The
principal of informed consent ensures that research participants are not coerced or persuaded into
research and that each individual fully understands the implications or participating (p. 2). This way
the individual will know what is going to happen during the research. A researcher will then use
data collection procedures with qualitative research. Qualitative observation is when the researcher
will take field notes about individuals and their behaviors. Qualitative interviews are the interviews
that the researcher conducts with the participants. The interviews can be face to face, on the

The Case Of James Richardson
Many people are enraged with the U.S. court system and feel that it does its job based on
prejudice, unfair, and despicable standards in which it s not held accountable for. This inserts a
fear of the justice system within the people themselves with the resulting lack of trust created.
There are countless cases of injustice that have made their way through the U.S. Court System
such as the case of James Richardson was spent 21 years in jail for being accused for the
poisoning and deaths of his 7 kids only to be let out later on after the real criminal had confessed to
the crimes. Another crimethat can be put on display is the case of James Bain who spent 35 years
in prison (which is the longest time served by anyone who has been wrongfully convicted) for
being wrongfully accused of multiple crimes including rape and was sent to prison for life only
to finally be granted the use of DNA evidence review for his case which eventually was the
deciding factor that gave him his freedom back. The case of Daryl Burton sickens many people
to the core after he served 24 years in prison after being charged with murder. It was later found
out that the police who were on Burton s case pushed the witnesses to go against Burton and
accuse him of the false crime. There are countless examples that can be used to show the
devastating mistakes the court system has made over the years and the seemingly lack of effort to

These strong survivors pose as teachers and role models by revealing strengths, weaknesses and

The unsung hero and heroin pair experience tremendous suffering, but confront that affliction with
distinct contrary responses. The theme and style of Wiesel and Ten Boom reveal individual
personal beliefs and strength levels in reaction to their concentration camp experience during WWII
s Holocaust. Theme is the window which Wiesel and Ten Boom open through words and thoughts
to reveal the true purpose of their tales. Although both authors experience the grime of
concentration camp and grief of family loss, their responses to this suffering are distinct.
This distinctness is not unexpected, for as one s strengths and beliefs are personal, as is the
effect of events effecting those strengths and beliefs. Wiesel and Ten Boom state the purpose of
their self exposed stories clearly, and their purposes differ just as clearly. Wiesel stresses the
importance of applying lessons of the past to the present for the sake of the world s future. He

Abstract In this study a new noise source is proposed as a one of renewable energy sources in
energy harvesting. Disk Jokey (DJ) is a common device in celebrations and other events.
Converting the produced noise from DJ to electric energy by using a suitable piezoelectric
transducer is the main aim of this study. Piezoelectric sensors used to convert the sound waves to
electric charges. Piezoelectric sensor of the model 7BB 41 2 was used. The piezoelectric sensors
were connected in series, parallel, and series with parallel combination connections. The disk
jockey was used as an acoustic noise source. The sound intensity levels of the output sound were 81,
84, 87 dB. The output of the three connection modes were measured at 0, 1,2,3,4, and 5cm distance.
The results showed that the parallel connection gave the highest power at the various distances. The
maximum generated power was 4.96mwatts without using an external power supply for the signal
condition device. The power decreases by increasing the distance from the source of the noise.

Urban Water Planning
Introduction:
In this changing global world, urban water systems are the most essential, valuable and sensitive
part of public infrastructure. Different utilities and municipalities are dealing with this
infrastructure with high responsibility and trying to manage and expand this infrastructure properly
for present and future generations [2].
In this present world, some emerging issues should be taken in consideration for future planning as
these issues are going to increase day by day in near future. These most important issues are: rising
population, increasing urbanization, growth in development and climate change. According to
United Nations Department of Economy And Social Affairs (UNDESA), the projected increase of

The application of systematic and effective processes to manage the assets over a whole life cycle
is provided by Whole Life Asset Management (WLAM), in order to ensure that the infrastructure
performance satisfies the intended service and meets the demand of the stakeholders with
minimized corresponding risk and cost [4] [5].
Each utility company or Government faces unique problems. Therefore an asset management plan
(AMP) that gives unique solution to the particular problems that the utility company faces due to
urbanization, while considering the current issues, technologies and time required for planning,
implementation, associated risks and challenges is a necessity to provide.
As an analysis to measure, how WLAM can improve the asset performance of water infrastructure,
this report evaluates a case study carried out by GHD, University of Sydney and p3iC, on one
water approach to urban water management at a city scale, namely that of the city of Sydney (CoS).
The study highlighted the challenges and the problems that are present in the water infrastructure
of the CoS [1].
This report shows where WLAM can be applied at the water infrastructure of the CoS to cope up
with the pressure exerted on the infrastructure for increasing urban population and suggests
methods and techniques that can be applied or utilized in doing so.
The line of sight approach will be developed as a guideline from corporate objectives to final
implementation of an AMP. Line of sight is very

Difference Between Conservatism And Liberalism
INTRODUCTION
The term liberalism has a variety of meanings nowadays. Freedom or liberty for each and every
individual is the main aim of the philosophy of liberalism. Freedom had different concepts in
different periods of time in the history and therefore the programs of liberalism were also different
in those time periods. However the main aim always remained the same. Liberalism not only
believed in human nature was good but it also believed that humans were rational. It supposes that,
as people have a logical intellect, they have the ability to identify different challenges and problems
and solve them. This will thus improve the human condition systematically. Conservatism, on the
other hand, is the opposite doctrine of liberalism. Conservatism, simply we can say that, supports
the preservation of the status quo.
Hence we can see that liberalism is a worldview founded on the ideas of liberty and equality.
Liberals generally believe in free and fair elections, freedom of press, freedom of religion, private
property and civil right.
Liberalism first developed in the western world. It became famous among philosophers and
economists during the era of Enlightenment. At that point of time absolute monarchy, state religion
and hereditary privilege was the prevailing system. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In International Relations that era is normally referred to as Idealism. With the birth of United
Nations Organization, liberalism once again gained momentum. But later with the start of cold
war power politics the rays of hope also seemed to fade away. Then when the cold war ended the
hopes for liberalism also emerged back. Liberal intellectuals made many justifications as to why
liberalism should be the supreme over other competing ideologies. Liberals are generally very
much optimistic therefore liberalism is generally described in literature as the tradition of

The First Meditation By Rene Descartes
Topic: How does Descartes argue that mind and body are distinct? Is he right? Am I real, or
imaginary? In the First Meditation, Rene Descartes presents the main falsehoods in which he
believed during his life, and the subsequent faultiness he experienced concerning the body of
knowledge. The philosopher considers that it is never too late to rethink the knowledge about
his personal being from the very foundations, and builds his thoughts on a certain ground starting
from common things. It would be impossible to doubt each thing separately, so he expresses his
doubt to the basic principles of knowledge he has already gained, since a conclusion would
surely be doubted if its premise was doubted. He starts by doubting basic senses, by comparing
feels in reality vs. in dreams. For example, even if I consciously feel warm when I am walking in
the sun, I could not claim that I am hundred В‐percentage sure I am awake, since I would feel it
the same way when I was in dreams. Descartes presents this idea to show the doubt of reality and
its elements. Also, he concludes that the common things we perceive are fashioned, and knowledge
based on that can be doubted, such as physics and astronomy. This category of knowledge are
different from geometry and arithmetic, which contain certain and definiteness in the simplest
thing. By doubting the sense and knowledge based on it, Descartes argued his approach that the
body and mindare two absolutely distinctive things. Descartes mentions God

Hamlet Bad Choices
Choices are the decisions we make in life, some are good others are bad. Choosing a bad
decision can affect families mentally, financially and emotionally. Bad choices always have
consequences. A persons emotions can alter them into making terrible choices. Sometimes there is
not a choice that is positive. Some people have choices that require sacrifice in order to survive.
People will have regrets if they make the wrong decision. Choices are decided by the emotional
state our brains are in.
Our emotions are hardwired into our brains that affect our morals and decisions. Our emotions
will sometimes make decisions for us. If our emotions are altered it will create impulsive or
irrational decisions. For example in the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Hamlet is
emotionally unstable and is angry with his mother because she does not value the death of his
father. At the moment Polonius yells for help behind the drapes for him Hamlet stabs him thinking
it was Claudius. Hamlet used his anger to make a decision, to either kill the person behind the
drapes, assumably Claudius. Or making the right choice and and discovering who is behind the
drapes; if it was Claudius then killing him. This demonstrates the role emotions play in for deciding
our choices. But what happens if there is not a right choice. ... Show more content on

The Death Penalty Should Be An Option
When presented with a heinous crime, the question of whether the death penalty should be an
option has often sparked heated debates between left wing liberals and right wing conservatives.
Those on the left would most likely argue that capital punishment does not serve any beneficial
purpose in our society. In contrast, conservatives, provided that they have no religious motives to
oppose the death penalty, would likely argue that it is a necessary punishment for heinous crimes.
For thousands of years the death penalty has been used as the ultimate form of punishment for a
vast number of crimes and in even more numerous methods. Babylon s King Hammurabi identified
25 different crimes that justified the death penalty; the list did not however include murder. A
popular form of punishment during the colonial period in New England, over 222 crimes were
punishable by death. These numbers began to dwindle to zero once it was determined that capital
punishmentwas inhumane by the British government ( The history of capital punishment ). The
movement to abolish the death penalty has spread to many other countries around the world but has
yet to have a widespread effect in the United States. Still currently legal in the U.S. in 31 states, the
death penalty remains as a reminder of mankind s barbaric past (Facts about the Death Penalty).
Considering how well humans have developed intellectually and innovatively over the centuries,
capital punishment seems like an awfully

The Purpose Of A Mousetrap Car
The purpose of my mousetrap car design was to design a car that was both quick/traveled and
creative. The design of my car was one main piece of basswood and having two thin pieces on
the side of that. Each of those side pieces would have two whole in them (at the ends) so that I
would be able to stick an axel through them and put wheels at then end. I used a total of four
wheels on my car so that the whole thing was balanced. I used lego wheels and lego axles
because I knew that because the axles fit perfectly in the wheels, that the wheels would be straight
and move easily. My wheels had a lot of tread to them which helps them maintain a high degree of
friction and it gives them a better grip to the floor. I hypothesized that if the length

The Radioactive Boy Scout By Ken Silverstein Recreates-
The Radioactive Boy Scout Introduction Growing up in suburban Detroit, David Hahn was
fascinated by science. While working on his Atomic Energy badge for the Boy Scouts, David s
obsessive attention turned to nuclear energy. Not worried about being safe and taking the pre
cautions, he plunged into a new project: building a nuclear breeder reactor in his backyard garden
shed. In the Radioactive Boy Scout, veteran journalist Ken Silverstein recreates in brilliant detail
the months of David s improbable nuclear quest. Acting as a physics professor, David solicited
information on reactor design from the United States government and from industry experts.

The Legacy Of The Ford Motor Company
On June 17, 1903 the Ford Motor Company was organized. The date is the day the deal started
for Henry Ford not because the company had his name, the day all his hard work would start to
payoff. To look at the deal from just one day would not do justice to the brilliant way and
intertwined ways Henry Ford took the world by storm. From the start in Ford s garage to the
offices of lawyers, and then on to control of the largest automotive companies in the world one
can see the deal was just a key to Mr. Ford s future. To start, Henry Fordwas born on a family farm
during the Civil War. This is what would drive Mr. Ford; not wanting to be a farmer and wanting
to work on machinery. Unsatisfied with farm work, Ford left home the following year, at the
age of 16, to take an apprenticeship as a machinist in Detroit. In the years that followed, he
would learn to skillfully operate and service steam engines, and would also study bookkeeping.
Later Henry Ford would work for the Edison Lighting Company as an engineer, later Ford would
become chief engineer. Ford got a chance to meet Thomas Edison and showed Edison his plans
for his first horseless carriage. This meeting would lead to a friendship that would help Ford
when designing his assembly line. Another account of Ford s early years says, In 1879 he left the
farm to become an apprentice at the Michigan Car Company, a manufacturer of railroad cars in
Detroit. Over the next two and one half years he held several similar jobs,

Friday Night Lights, By Steven Hilliard Stern
In the book, Friday Night Lights, H.G. Bissinger depicts the culture of a small town called Odessa
where economic instability, racial prejudice, sexism, and poverty are common. The one thing this
town can truly hang onto is the local high school football team. In Miracle on Ice, directed by
Steven Hilliard Stern, the head coach of the American Olympic Hockey Team Herb Brooks is
determined to gather up an American team to beat the Russians in their own game, ice hockey. In
both works, unity is an important theme that is reached through different means. In Miracle the
elements of socioeconomic class and race were not a factor in unifying the team. While in Friday
Night Lightsthose factors were extremely important throughout the context of what unity means
in the story. The unity in Miracle is more constructive because it was more easily achieved
because it was more well defined, it was simply to defeat the Russians and bring glory and pride
to the nation. Whereas in Odessa the mission was more unclear. In a time where America was
facing a Crisis in Confidence the U.S. Olympic Hockey brought the nation together. Although
Permian football was effective in unifying and giving hope to many of its citizens, the football
culture was also used to create division among different races and social classes ,and therefore was
destructive.
Representative sports is a common theme in both works which contributes to the unity within both
communities. In Sports Unites and Sports Divides,

Adapting Climate Change Involves Taking Practical Action
Adapting to climate change involves taking practical action. Humans that live on the earth have
to learn that the world is constantly changing and anything is bound to happen at any moment. In
order to protect what s yours and for others to survive, humans must learn to adapt to climate
changes. It s not only protecting what s yours, but it s also about protecting the environment as to
where one gets their resources from. It s just like how the seasons change throughout the year in
some parts of the country. There is Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall; it s a repeating cycle. Some
seasons may be longer than others depending on where a person lives. So people who live in
certain areas of the world know or should know how to adapt to these climatechanges based on the
history of that area. For humans to survive they must protect the natural resources that are on the
earth. Meaning they must protect the crops, they must protect the land, they must protect the water,
they must protect the animals, and most importantly they must protect each other. The earth is
4.543 billion years old, so the land we have here on earth could diminish at any time. In order to
make earth worth living on, every human being must adapt to the climate changes that evolve. One
must understand as to why climate changeis important. What are humans doing that affect the
climate and how can it affect the lives of billions of people across the world.
Humans must learn strategies to protect natural

Christianity In The Church, Christianity, And Christianity
Christianity today stands as the most popular religion in the entire world. Statistically, out of every
three people in the world one is Christian. During the time of Christ, roughly 30 AD, are the first
examples of Christian worship. The religion spread across the European nations and churches began
to spring up both in the West, Romanesque and Gothic, and in the East, Byzantine.
Both sectors of Europe agree that the main purpose of a church is to establish a connection to
heaven and the center of this relation is the Lord Jesus Christ. Throughout both churches, you find
the Good Shepherd, appears as a child, a beardless man, and a Bearded Man. All forms generally
depict Christ with a halo quartered by a cross about his head. However, the method in which
symbolism incorporated into each church varies.
Byzantine churches created their own little heaven on earth with their churches. Paul Meyendorff
describes each aspect of the church and how to the Byzantines, each part of the church held
spiritual importance to be represented in the architecture thereof. For example, at the east end of
the church the apse resided, the apse alluded to the cave wherein Christ was born as well as the one
that held him after his death.
Andrew Palmer described the domes and barrel vaults of the church of Hagia Sophia as
representing the heavens above and the corners of the earth. Byzantine churches employed massive
piers to support the weight of the heavy dome. The architects added to the

  • 2. Dualistic Social Roles In Victor Hugo s Les MisГ©rables In Victor Hugo s novel Les MisГ©rables, a man named Jean Valjean is imprisoned for nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread. Though he goes in a good man, he comes out troubled, judged, and angry. The simple kindness and compassion showed to him by a bishop inspires him to change and rise above his past. Throughout his book, Victor Hugo uses metaphor, symbolism, and diction to emphasize the remarkably non dualistic nature between the saint and the sinner, highlighting society s divine obligation to treat one another with mercy and love. By using metaphor, symbolism, and diction, Hugo is able to shed light on a social issue of his day in a way that allows the reader relate to and understand a misunderstood class of society. The passage... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being a religious leader, one might expect him to be very black and white about good and evil, yet he is not (at least not in the way that one might expect). He has the authority to judge others but he leaves it to God. Instead of focusing on the duality of religion (righteousness and sin), he decides to focus on the non dualistic side of religion: the people and their worth as individuals. This perspective was very different from the church of Hugo s day. For this, he would get a lot of complaints and attacks from the Catholic church concerning Les MisГ©rables, perhaps signifying the powerful influence of his choice in character. As the Bishop s doctrine is summarized, Hugo continues to implement literary devices such as personification and imagery to help the reader visualize the sinner s condition. Man has upon him flesh, the Bishop states, which is at once his burden and his temptation. This flesh is personified so as to become an actual living figure of opposition. He drags it with him and yields to it, the Bishop teaches, He must watch it, cheek it, repress it, and obey it only at the last extremity . The flesh , of course, symbolizes the struggle of the natural man and the temptations that the sinner succumbs to. Hugo s choice of words like drag and burden generate the feeling of heaviness found in the temptation that the mortal man bears. In the next ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Befriended Brother in Mansfield Park by Jane Austen William Price is well regarded in Mansfield Park by Jane Austen. He is the brother of Fanny Price, whom is the main character of the novel. Fanny is taken in by her uncle, Sir Thomas Bertram and leaves her biological family, which is both unfortunate as well as fortunate for Fanny. By living with the Bertrams, she is allowed a better education and to be raised in a higher form of etiquette due to the fact that her family did not have as much money as the Bertrams did. The ill fated part of her story is that she must leave her brother, William who, in the result, gains access into the navy because of his connections with Fanny s adopted family. Jane Austen writes a novel that both pushes at the romantic standards that women had to obey to while also focusing on a great deal of love within the family. The love that Fanny has for her brother right until the end of the novel is striking and heart warming. William is the older brother that every little sister wants to look up to, he is not only an idol to Fanny but a role model to the readers of the narrative. Austen creates characters to dislike and characters that convey emotion. Lady Bertram is one character of which the reader s dislike does not stop for due to her mean attitude towards Fanny and the fact that she is almost constantly sitting on the couch with her pug, which she treats as if she loves more than her own children. Other characters, such as William, allow for the novel to not be one of complete hate amongst ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Essay On The Nature Of Frankenstein In Insurmountable barriers to our union : Homosocial male bonding, homosexual panic, and death on the ice in Frankenstein James Holt McGavran makes a compelling argument about the nature of Frankenstein s creature in Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. He argues that the creature represents his creators repressed sexuality and that Victor s rejection of the creature stems from homosexual panic. The revulsion Victor feels is due to being faced with a physical manifestation of his sexuality and being forced to confront it. McGavran claims that the mutual obsession with one another that the creature and Victor share is due to attraction, and that the creature represents an ideal lover for Victor. He goes on to offer proof of both Shelley s... McGavran argues that it is the fact that the creature is a physical representation of Victors sexuality that forces him to have to acknowledge his homosexual desire. McGavran points out that Victor had selected his features as beautiful (Shelley, 39) which means that the creature has not always revolted his creator (McGavran, 47). This reinforces both the idea of homosexual panic and McGavran s argument that the creature represents his ideal male lover (47) as Shelley makes a point of saying that Victor wanted his creature to be attractive. Further, after the creation of the creature, Victor: travers[es] the streets, without any clear conception of where [he] was or what [he] was doing. [His] heart palpitated in the sickness of fear; and [he] hurried on with irregular steps, not daring to look about [him] (Shelley, 40). That he is too afraid to look about him suggests that he is filled with shame over his realization of the nature of his creation. In the article, McGavran touches on feminist ... Three big meals a day, and a few snacks in between, is how most of us live. It s hard for us to imagine what its like for those who go days eating very little or nothing at all. There are three predominate reasons why third world countries are hit hard with malnutrition, 1) poor families aren t given government help, 2) difficulties with economy and 3) higher food prices. ( 2012 World Hunger... ) As stated in the website 2012 World Hunger and Poverty Facts and Statistics, in the world there are 925 million hungry people, most of them in Asia, the Pacific and Africa. These people live on $1.25 or less a day. Minimum wage is $7.25 in the U.S., and most people work 8 hours a day, so that means they would be getting fifty eight dollars a day. It would take someone in a third world country about forty seven days to make what someone makes in America in 8 hours. And most of them spend that money on food and medical needs, but $1.25 is not enough. In the United States if a family doesn t have enough money for medical help, they can still go see a doctor, but in other countries it s very different. More than 30,000 children die per year from preventable sickness because they can t go see a doctor. And as for food, Americans have access to food every hour of the day. Many people died of starvation. Others had their house, their land or all their possessions destroyed. How had the situation come about where Englishmen were prepared to fight against each other, and even against members of their own families ? Charles s reign started off badly, in 1625 Charles married a French Catholic princess, Henrietta Maria. This was very unpopular since Parliament questioned the religion of Charles s children especially if they were brought up by a Catholic mother. In 1629, Charles tried to dissolve Parliament. He then ruled without them for eleven years, until 1640. Some historians say that his policies during this time were very unpopular. One method he used was the Ship Money Tax . • 10. Essay on The Controversy Surrounding Stem-cell Research Stem cell research is a complex subject. First of all you need to know there are three main categories of stem cells. Embryonic, Fetal and Adult; not everyone is for or against all of these types. There are different sets on pros and cons to each of these types and I will address a few for each type. I believe the pros outweigh the cons in each of these and stem cellresearch is very beneficial for medical purposes. The term stem cell research was first used by gist Alexander Maksimov, a Russian histologist in 1908. His postulate was made in Berlin at the congress of hematological society and proposed the existence of haematopoietic stem cells. Not to say that fetuses should be conceived just to be aborted for this reason but if a woman chooses to abort her baby it is a good thing it could be used for good, to cure diseases plaguing others. Embryonic stem cell lines are from the inner cell mass of a blastoyst, that is, a very young embryo. Probably around four to five days old in humans and consisting of no less than 50 and no more than 150 cells. When given sufficient and necessary stimulation stem cells can develop into more than 200 types of cells in the adult body, this gives then potential to cure numerous diseases. While there are currently no approved treatments using embryonic stem cells, they remain a theoretically potential source for regenerative and tissue replacement after injury and disease. The variety of cells they can develop into makes limitless possibilities for medicine. Turning ES cells into usable cells while avoiding transplant rejection are some problems scientists will have to work through. But like for organ transplants and anti rejection drugs it is possible these obstacles could be overcome. Next, Adult Stem cells do not cause anywhere near as much controversy as embryonic stem cells because no organisms are destructed in the procedures. The scene is utilized to emphasize the point that the film isn t another typical superhero movie, what happens in real life will occur in the movie. The man trying to be super instead of a hero is described as one with a history of mental instability. The film ridicules the idea of a superhero being one with superhuman powers. Judicial torture is a punishment regardless of what or why, as long as it classifies as torture. The words are occasionally interchangeable, as every case of lawful torture is a punishment but not every punishment is necessarily torture. Historically, judicial torture has been used for ages, albeit differing in how it is carried out today. Torture for the purpose of criminal punishment first emerged in the twelfth century in Northern Italy when prosecution done privately by popes and royalty on criminals became prevalent and under threat when their political authority became more centralized. During the remaining years of the Middle Ages, the process spread to much of Europe (Encyclopedia.com). In the late twelfth century, the inquisitional procedure was introduced to papal legislation with the purpose of controlling those who strayed from the church, and eventually, this eventually extended to secular (nonreligious) crime as well. However, ChrГ©tien s intentions, emotions, and thoughts about these traditions are unclear to the modern reader. In a plague like manner we see Lancelot s decisions and thoughts become more and more irrational. From attempting suicide multiple times to thinking he can defeat hundreds of knights at once, Lancelot becomes a changed man. He values the ideals of love over his religion, his knighthood, his honor, and even his life. In sum, ChrГ©tien portrays Lancelot s love in a very honorable way at the surface level, but there is textual evidence to speculate that he had ulterior motives in presenting this story: to portray courtly love as foolish, overbearing, and ultimately detrimental to one s ... • 25. The Red Light On The Dashboard Essay . Suppress your anger. Anger gets a really bad rap, but I kind of love it. I see it as the red light on the dashboard. It simply means that my needs are not being met. So I don t suppress it: I acknowledge it and address it. 2. Start telling a story. When you re angry, it s easy (and natural) to start writing a play in which you re simultaneously the hero, the victim, and the narrator. Don t. Your motto should be just the facts. Identify what you really know is the case (as opposed to what you think is happening). Take a clear look at what you are reacting to and make a clear observation, making sure not to mix in your judgments. 3. Blame a situation or another person. A situation or another person s actions can never make you feel a certain way, so obviously blaming someone or something for your anger is a red herring. Remember, feelings are your warning signals, and are always a result of your needs not being met. As your attention shifts from the stimulus and your immediate reaction (anger) to identifying which of your needs are not being met, your feelings will shift also. 4. Focus on what you don t want. Don t focus on what s bad about the situation: doing so will almost certainly keep you stuck there. Think about it: until we figure out what specific things we do want, it s going to be impossible to ask for them. We re much more likely to judge and blame others for the bad stuff ( It s her fault! ). Learn to take ownership of your thinking and focus ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

You d think by now that Rapunzel would realize that Gothel was only ever really looking out for herself, but she didn t. Rapunzel still believed that Gothel was doing what was best for her. Hearing Gothel s question a laugh escaped her mouth, I d probably go mad. She stated with a slight no of the head. The window was the only thing connecting her with the outside world, the only thing keeping her of sound mind. Though if Rapunzel had grown up without the window she most likely wouldn t know any different. Maybe she would even be asking about the outside world, maybe she would have been frightened of it. The young blonde could never see herself frightened by it, a small smile crossed her face as she stared at her mother. Rapunzel noticed the shocked look that spread across Gothel s face when she mentioned wanting to paint her. Her brow rose a little, her head tilted to the side. It was like her mother was hearing something she d have never heard before. Though Rapunzel couldn t really blame here. If she didn t know many people who could paint than that could be why she was so utterly shocked by Rapunzel. Hearing Gothel s reply Rapunzel nodded her head in agreement with her. • 33. Qualitative And Quantitative Research Design Research and Program Evaluation This paper will compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative research designs. While giving the information, I will also elaborate on the types of research designs that they both implore. At the end of the paper, the reader will have a better understanding for qualitative and quantitative research designs and when to use each type of design. Qualitative Research Design Cresswell (2014) states qualitative methods rely on text and image data, have unique steps in data analysis, and draw on diverse designs (p. 183). Qualitative research design is a research method used by researchers studying human behaviors and habits. For example, a counselor generating some ideas for a new inclusion program might want to study people s behaviors and preferences, to make sure that the inclusion program might become feasible. Quick and Hall (2011) state The principal of informed consent ensures that research participants are not coerced or persuaded into research and that each individual fully understands the implications or participating (p. 2). This way the individual will know what is going to happen during the research. A researcher will then use data collection procedures with qualitative research. Qualitative observation is when the researcher will take field notes about individuals and their behaviors. Qualitative interviews are the interviews that the researcher conducts with the participants. The interviews can be face to face, on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Case Of James Richardson Many people are enraged with the U.S. court system and feel that it does its job based on prejudice, unfair, and despicable standards in which it s not held accountable for. This inserts a fear of the justice system within the people themselves with the resulting lack of trust created. There are countless cases of injustice that have made their way through the U.S. Court System such as the case of James Richardson was spent 21 years in jail for being accused for the poisoning and deaths of his 7 kids only to be let out later on after the real criminal had confessed to the crimes. Another crimethat can be put on display is the case of James Bain who spent 35 years in prison (which is the longest time served by anyone who has been wrongfully convicted) for being wrongfully accused of multiple crimes including rape and was sent to prison for life only to finally be granted the use of DNA evidence review for his case which eventually was the deciding factor that gave him his freedom back. The case of Daryl Burton sickens many people to the core after he served 24 years in prison after being charged with murder. It was later found out that the police who were on Burton s case pushed the witnesses to go against Burton and accuse him of the false crime. There are countless examples that can be used to show the devastating mistakes the court system has made over the years and the seemingly lack of effort to not only get it right the first time but to consider the importance of ... • 40. Difference Between Conservatism And Liberalism INTRODUCTION The term liberalism has a variety of meanings nowadays. Freedom or liberty for each and every individual is the main aim of the philosophy of liberalism. Freedom had different concepts in different periods of time in the history and therefore the programs of liberalism were also different in those time periods. However the main aim always remained the same. Liberalism not only believed in human nature was good but it also believed that humans were rational. It supposes that, as people have a logical intellect, they have the ability to identify different challenges and problems and solve them. This will thus improve the human condition systematically. Conservatism, on the other hand, is the opposite doctrine of liberalism. Conservatism, simply we can say that, supports the preservation of the status quo. Hence we can see that liberalism is a worldview founded on the ideas of liberty and equality. Liberals generally believe in free and fair elections, freedom of press, freedom of religion, private property and civil right. Liberalism first developed in the western world. • 41. The First Meditation By Rene Descartes Topic: How does Descartes argue that mind and body are distinct? Is he right? Am I real, or imaginary? In the First Meditation, Rene Descartes presents the main falsehoods in which he believed during his life, and the subsequent faultiness he experienced concerning the body of knowledge. The philosopher considers that it is never too late to rethink the knowledge about his personal being from the very foundations, and builds his thoughts on a certain ground starting from common things. It would be impossible to doubt each thing separately, so he expresses his doubt to the basic principles of knowledge he has already gained, since a conclusion would surely be doubted if its premise was doubted. He starts by doubting basic senses, by comparing feels in reality vs. in dreams. For example, even if I consciously feel warm when I am walking in the sun, I could not claim that I am hundred В‐percentage sure I am awake, since I would feel it the same way when I was in dreams. Descartes presents this idea to show the doubt of reality and its elements. Also, he concludes that the common things we perceive are fashioned, and knowledge based on that can be doubted, such as physics and astronomy. This category of knowledge are different from geometry and arithmetic, which contain certain and definiteness in the simplest thing. By doubting the sense and knowledge based on it, Descartes argued his approach that the body and mindare two absolutely distinctive things. Descartes mentions God ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Hamlet Bad Choices Choices are the decisions we make in life, some are good others are bad. Choosing a bad decision can affect families mentally, financially and emotionally. Bad choices always have consequences. A persons emotions can alter them into making terrible choices. Sometimes there is not a choice that is positive. Some people have choices that require sacrifice in order to survive. People will have regrets if they make the wrong decision. Choices are decided by the emotional state our brains are in. Our emotions are hardwired into our brains that affect our morals and decisions. Our emotions will sometimes make decisions for us. If our emotions are altered it will create impulsive or irrational decisions. For example in the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Hamlet is emotionally unstable and is angry with his mother because she does not value the death of his father. At the moment Polonius yells for help behind the drapes for him Hamlet stabs him thinking it was Claudius. Hamlet used his anger to make a decision, to either kill the person behind the drapes, assumably Claudius. The Death Penalty Should Be An Option When presented with a heinous crime, the question of whether the death penalty should be an option has often sparked heated debates between left wing liberals and right wing conservatives. Those on the left would most likely argue that capital punishment does not serve any beneficial purpose in our society. In contrast, conservatives, provided that they have no religious motives to oppose the death penalty, would likely argue that it is a necessary punishment for heinous crimes. For thousands of years the death penalty has been used as the ultimate form of punishment for a vast number of crimes and in even more numerous methods. Babylon s King Hammurabi identified 25 different crimes that justified the death penalty; the list did not however include murder. A popular form of punishment during the colonial period in New England, over 222 crimes were punishable by death. These numbers began to dwindle to zero once it was determined that capital punishmentwas inhumane by the British government ( The history of capital punishment ). The movement to abolish the death penalty has spread to many other countries around the world but has yet to have a widespread effect in the United States. Bissinger depicts the culture of a small town called Odessa where economic instability, racial prejudice, sexism, and poverty are common. In Miracle on Ice, directed by Steven Hilliard Stern, the head coach of the American Olympic Hockey Team Herb Brooks is determined to gather up an American team to beat the Russians in their own game, ice hockey. In both works, unity is an important theme that is reached through different means. In Miracle the elements of socioeconomic class and race were not a factor in unifying the team. While in Friday Night Lightsthose factors were extremely important throughout the context of what unity means in the story. The unity in Miracle is more constructive because it was more easily achieved because it was more well defined, it was simply to defeat the Russians and bring glory and pride to the nation. Whereas in Odessa the mission was more unclear. In a time where America was facing a Crisis in Confidence the U.S. Olympic Hockey brought the nation together. Although Permian football was effective in unifying and giving hope to many of its citizens, the football culture was also used to create division among different races and social classes ,and therefore was destructive. Statistically, out of every three people in the world one is Christian. During the time of Christ, roughly 30 AD, are the first examples of Christian worship. The religion spread across the European nations and churches began to spring up both in the West, Romanesque and Gothic, and in the East, Byzantine. Both sectors of Europe agree that the main purpose of a church is to establish a connection to heaven and the center of this relation is the Lord Jesus Christ. Throughout both churches, you find the Good Shepherd, appears as a child, a beardless man, and a Bearded Man. All forms generally depict Christ with a halo quartered by a cross about his head. However, the method in which symbolism incorporated into each church varies. Byzantine churches created their own little heaven on earth with their churches. Paul Meyendorff describes each aspect of the church and how to the Byzantines, each part of the church held spiritual importance to be represented in the architecture thereof. For example, at the east end of the church the apse resided, the apse alluded to the cave wherein Christ was born as well as the one that held him after his death.
