Abstract: The highly conjugated system of the cyanine dyes makes it a very good compound in
the development of more efficient solar cells. In this experiment, the maximum wavelength was
measured for nine dyes using a UV Vis spectrum. The result that were obtained agreed with Kuhn
s model for the less polarizable end groups such as 3,3 diethyloxadicarbocyanine and 3,3
diethyloxatricarbocyanine. That suggested that these two compounds were not as easy to polarize
compared to the rest of the dyes. The rest of the dyes required the use of the empirical parameter
О± to provide more reliable predictions of the wavelengths. This was due to the highly polarized
ends of the dyes which needed the adjustment of the parameter to get more accurate results. The
series with the higher polarizable end groups absorbed higher wavelength light than the less
polarized groups. This supported the idea of the one dimensional box. Also, higher wavelength was
determined to be associated with longer conjugated carbon methine chains between the Nitrogen
atoms. Kuhn s free electron model was very reliable for this system.

In 2009, Alfonso Jay King, Jr. was arrested on serious assault charges. While King was in
custody, police collected his DNA by cotton swabbing his cheek. This was authorized by the
Maryland DNA Collection Act (MDCA), which permits police to obtain DNA samples from
people arrested for, but not yet convicted of, violent crimes. After his DNA was processed, King
was connected to an unsolved rape case from 2003 and convicted of rape. In the Court of
Appeals of Maryland, the lower court s decision was reversed because King s right against
suspicionless searches outweighed the identification purposes his DNA served in his 2009 case.
Yet, the court maintained that the MDCA was constitutional because there are scenarios where

Mill explains the higher and lower pleasures, comparing human happiness to that of pigs. He
states, Human beings have higher faculties than the animal appetites, and once they become
conscious of them they don t regard anything as happiness that doesn t include their gratification
(Mill, 5). This comparison is important, as it serves as a concrete example of more desirable
pleasures. Humans mental pleasures are also dependent on their respective faculties. The higher
the person s faculties, the higher more required for the person to be happy. This individual quality
of happiness is therefore subjective as the two people can achieve the same understood level of
happiness with significantly different mental cultivations. A person who cultivates their mind daily
and understands more about philosophy is happier, but a person with lower faculties is unable to
