Obasan Theme Essay
Prompt: The most important themes in literature are sometimes developed in scenes in which a
death or deaths take place. Choose a novel or play and write a well organized essay in which you
show how a specific death scene helps to illuminate the meaning of the work as a whole. Avoid
mere plot summary. The novel Obasan, by Joy Kogawa, is a historical fictionnovel that takes place
in multiple settings, yet they all have one thing in common: they were based mostly on War World
II. Throughout this novel, a frequently brought up topic is death: it s shown to be one of the main
ideas in this novel, both literal and figurative. The first death to be introduced was the death of
Naomi s uncle, Sam. It shows in the novel that uncle Sam is a big part of Naomi s life, as she
grew up with him and Obasan instead of her parents. The death of her uncle had been
unexpected, as Obasan had said, There was no knowing. Death had been personified in They
stuck tubes into his wrists like grafting on a tree but Death won against the medical artistry to
exaggerate a type of hold Death had on Naomi s uncle. This had set a lot of confusion and thought
as to what had caused it and what he was thinking as well as giving Obasan a frightening... Show

Research Paper On Abusive Relationships
Abusive Relationships: The Flawed Ideas of Machismo Masculinity
The term abusive relationship brings to mind a relationship of unequal power distribution. The
perpetrator is usually imagined to be the husband in heterosexual relationships and we, generally,
identify the wife as the victim of such cases of abuse.
However, recent findings suggest that it is not always the husband who is the perpetrator. In many
such cases, the dominant abusive figure is the wife. Although abuse exists in both homosexual and
heterosexual relationships, we will be focusing on the latter in this article.
While different forms of abuse against women are reported each year, there seems to a global,
societal taboo on the issue of abuse against men.
Patriarchal societies around the world more often turn a blind eye to the abuses men face ... Show

In such cases, the victim may feel like he is shielding the children from the abuser. Also, the victim
may not want to end the relationship so as not to have to enter protracted custody battles or risk
losing custody of his children.
Of course, we cannot deny that Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) affects more women negatively
than men in the global scenario: archaic laws and customs prevent women from seeking justice in
many countries. Also, while studies have shown that women can be violent in intimate
relationships, men are more likely to injure their partners more grievously than women. Critics of
men affected by IPV argue that this is an anti feminist trend that seeks to undermine the positive
strides the world has taken in acknowledging and attempting to combat domestic violence against
women.
However, it is our belief that violence can be perpetrated by anyone in any scenario. The world
must change its flawed perceptions of masculinity and urge male victims of abuse worldwide to
come forward with their

Jorge Research Paper
Jorge has to be my most favorite person in the world. I met him in July of the year 2000. Jorge is
the total package; he is handsome, charming, funny and smart. Did I mention how handsome he
is? Those gorgeous golden brown eyes, his beard with a mixture of black and red hair, and those
plump lips are just to die for. Jorge continues to amaze after all these year. He continues to be
everything he was when we met and so much more. He truly is a man like no other; heaven sent,
superman, a super dad and a super husband. Have you ever felt like God sent you your own
personal Angel? Jorge came into my life when I needed him the most. I was young and dumb,
making bad life choices and he was mature and ready to settle down. He never judged me for my
past mistakes but instead encouraged me to want better for myself. His acceptance showed me
what a big heart he had and allowed me to trust him. He helped me get my life back on track and
stuck by my side through the good and the bad. There s not a day that goes by that I don t thank
God for putting Jorge in my life. Jorge works twelve hour shifts, anywhere from four to six days a
week. His job is both mentally and physically demanding. It amazes me that with all the hours of
hard labor he puts in at work that he still manages to get things done around the house. From tiling

Monkey D. Luffy Character Traits
Episode 1: I m Luffy! The Man Who Will Become The Pirate King!
Monkey D. Luffy starts his journey of becoming the King of the Pirates. He meets Coby and saves
him from Alvida (a pirate in the East Blue).
In this episode, the characters that are presented showed atypical gendered behaviors and traits.
For example, Alvida is a girl and she is the captain of her ship. Furthermore, she is depicted as a
character who is strong and fear by both her crew and civilians. Furthermore, when the main
character Monkey D. Luffy, fought with her, he fought with all his strength. In other words, he
fought her as he would a male character.
The appearance of Luffy and Alvida are also atypical of how females and main males are depicted
on TV. For example, leading... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He had a lot of muscles, is very big, and has a tough voice. Morgan s arm was replace with an ax
hammer and he had on a metal mask that covers his mouth and chin. The emotion of Morgan s
team were quite real. Morgan s team hated him because he is evil and corrupt. However, they
were too scary of him to say anything. I feel that the emotion of being scary of a person who could
hurt you was portray well in this episode and is reflective of real life. For example, there was a
scene where Morgan declared that he was the best leader there is and his team look visibly scary
and didn t agree with it. However, due to fear of being chop up, none of them went against the idea
and just did what they were told by Morgan.
The way that Luffy moves and his logic is not realistic because he is made out of rubber and he
has no fear. For example, there was a scene where Luffy was shot by a bunch of bullets and he
was completely fine. They characters in this series do bleed when they are hurt and they do show

Essay about Frosts Tuft Of Flowers And Men
A Look at the Theme of Separation in the Poetry of Robert Frost
The creation of borders and boundaries has been around since the beginning of civilization. The
division of property and possessions among individuals establishes a sense of self worth. The
erection of fences and walls keeps property separate. Walls also serve as a means of separating
worlds. Modern society demands the creation, and maintenance of these boundaries. In his poems,
amp;#8220;The Tuft of Flowers, ; and amp;#8220;Mending Wall, ; Robert Frost explores the role
that walls play in our lives. He examines how the lives of men are both separated, and drawn
together by walls.

The Butterfly becomes the speaker amp;#8217;s morning companion, and its amp;#8217; flight
leads the speaker to the flowers. He serves to help lead the man
to realize that life and beauty unite all things. Frost writes, amp;#8220; The butterfly and I had lit
upon, Nevertheless a message from the dawn ; (19). By directing the man to the flowers, the
butterfly becomes an important character in this poem.
amp;#8220;Mending Wall ; takes up where the theme of amp;#8220;The Tuft of Flowers ;
leaves off. In amp;#8220;Mending Wall ;, two neighbors repair the wall that divides their
property. The speaker realizes that questioning the existing wall is senseless, but he likes to
view the task of repairing the wall playfully. Frost writes, amp;#8220;Oh, just another kind of out
door game ; (28). As if playing a game, the speaker tends to his side of the field, and his neighbor
to the opposing side. Frost writes, amp;#8220;Spring is the mischief in me ; (28). By this, the
speaker knows that the acceptance of the wall is a way of life, and that his questions against the
wall will produce no substantial answers. Wallace writes, amp;#8220;Frost knows as well how
radical and difficult it is to amp;#8220;take in ; another, and yet maintain a sense of one
amp;#8217;s own and the other amp;#8217;s distinctness ; (227). The statement encompasses the

Word Christian Research Paper
What does the Word Christian Mean?
1.What does the word Christian mean in the university s name?
The word Christian has been used extremely, and in some cases strangely, for over 2000 years.
Historically, it was born in the ancient city of Antioch. There, according to Acts 11:26, the
disciples were first called Christians (ESV). Since that first century usage, Christian has defined
religious groups sects, armies, athletic endeavors, political parties, and a host of entities and ideas
which probably would make those original disciples shake their heads in disbelief. The Christian
Vegetarian Association? Wouldn t have dreamt it, Peter could have told Paul, if they both spoke
English.

Evangelical is unique as a Christian identifier in that it describes a movement within orthodox
Christianity which transcends denominational and even confessional boundaries. Evangelicals exist
among Anglicans, Presbyterians, Quakers, Lutherans, Mennonites lots of denominations!
Though several people have attempted to define this movement, the most broadly accepted
definition was crafted by British historian David Bebbington. In his book Evangelicalism in
Modern Britain (1989) he noted four distinctive, or characterizations, about evangelicals which
have well described the movement all along its 400 plus year history and throughout all the
denominations and global regions where it is found: conversions, the belief that lives need to be
changed; activism, the expression of the gospel in effort; Biblicism, a particular regard for the Bible
and what may be called crusaderism, a stress on the sacrifice of Christ on the cross (Bebbington,
1989, p. 3). Please note that powerful Republican voting bloc in the U.S. is not one of the
distinctive. Evangelical is first and foremost a historically theological, Christian

The Battle of the Crater
Introduction The Battle of the Crater was supposed to be an unexpected attempt by
Union forces to break through the Confederate defenses south of a critical hub near Petersburg,
Virginia. The battle took place on the morning of July 30 1864, and consisted of 16,500 IX Corps
Union soldiers and approximately 9,500 Confederate soldiers.1 Ambrose E. Burnside lead the IX
Corps soldiers but overall command of the Union soldiers known as Grant s Army of the Potomac
was by General George G. Meade. The confederate soldiers were mostly made up of elements of
the Army of Northern Virginia and South Carolina and were led by William Mahone under the
direct order of Robert E. Lee. The Union decided to explode a mine under the Confederates and
blow a gap into their defensive lines. Petersburg, Virginia was an important location due to the
railheads that merged together there. The railhead then continued to Richmond the capital to
deliver supplies to the Confederate Army. 2
History Some of the worst fighting between Ulysses S. Grant s Army of the Potomac and General
Robert E. Lee s Army happened in the months leading up to the Battle of the Crater near Petersburg,
Virginia. The two armies clashed at such places as the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, the
North Anna River, Cold Harbor, and along the defensive perimeter around Petersburg.3 The

To achieve silence requires effort and the attention of the will, and maximum control of self

Word length effect
Word length effect is the finding that list of short words (eg: cat, boat, pear, etc) are recalled better
than list of long words(eg: hovercraft, ensemble, accomplish, etc) Lewandowsky Farrell (2008).
I)Mackworth (1963) found that people can remember items that take less time to pronounce better
than items that take longer to pronounce.
II)Baddeley, Thomson, Buchanan(1975) found that systematically explored the effect of word
length in terms of pronunciation time. They demonstrated that even when items are equated for
number of syllables and word frequency, if one set of words takes less time to pronounce than
another set, memory will be better for the shorter items.
III)Ian Neath, James S. Nairne (1995) suggested that Memory is worse for items that take longer to
pronounce, even when the items are equated for frequency, number of syllables, and number of
phonemes.
IV) Jalbert, Neath, Surprenant (2011), suggested that past demonstrations of the word length effect,
the finding that words with fewer syllables are recalled better than words with more syllables.

Star Spangled Banner And Star Spangled Banner, By...
Bloodshed and the tyranny of battle has inspired art since the beginning of recorded history. In
essence though, the main purpose of war is to protect or enhance the liberties of the people and
their families fighting. Due to the complex and utter horrific experiences that happen during battle,
naturally people want to dedicate a long standing piece of work to honor those who have endured
those traumatic experiences for the greater good. Two examples of art being centered around war
are the Star Spangled Banner, by Francis Scott Key, and a sculpture entitled The Fountain of
Eternal Life, by Marshall Fredericks. When these two works are broken down into their key
elements it is apparent that there are key similarities between the images these works create, and
the reasons they were created; in addition to their connection to civil liberties. One must consider
the differences between the works as well, such as the mediums in which they were created, the
theme of the works, and what they were dedicated to. To be concise, both Key and Fredericks
created two extremely different works of art that have overlapping ideals, and have a strong
connection to civil liberties. Civil liberties are the basic human rightsguaranteed to every person.
Those rights include ideas like the freedom of speech, press, and assembly, freedom of religion,
and the open pursuit of happiness. A more personal definition of civil liberties is the ability to be

Mindfulness Meditation In Public Schools
CONCERNS
There is increased interest toward mindfulness meditation, particularly in education. A number of
school programs have emerged claiming improvements in the following areas: executive functions,
prosociality, emotional regulation, and overall wellbeing (Broderick and Frank, 2014; Flook et al.
2010; Schonert Reichl and Lawlor, 2010). Oddly, very few risks were reported in the studies. In a
systematic review of twenty four mindfulness based school interventions, overall results show
students either benefited from the interventions or gained no effect. Negligible negative effects
were reported (Zenner, Herrnleben Kurz and Walach, 2014). It is important to consider the
identification and detection of undesirable outcomes, as well ... Show more content on

For example, a Vancouver father launched a petition calling for the withdrawal of all meditation
programs from public schools alleging that such programs, imposed on children, violate their
freedom of religion (Chwartkowski, 2016). However, Canda and Furnam (as cited in Napoli et al.
2005)) claim that the practices of mindfulness meditation, such as mindful breathing, are compatible
with all religious beliefs.
CONCLUSION
This essay has looked at the relationship between mindfulness and optimal functioning in the school
setting and used the PROSPER framework proposed by Noble and McGrath (2015), as it illustrates
effectively the many dimensions of student flourishing.
In a world of fast paced and instant communication, it is necessary to teach children and teens to
stop and be quiet, and the most propitious times to do so are in the periods of life where brain
plasticity is higher, namely, early childhood and adolescence (Galla, Kaiser Greenland and Black,
2016).
Mindfulness interventions show promise as a cost effective strategy to promote both academic
success and wellbeing in children and adolescents, as any increase in self control and executive
functions, even small, may yield bigger outcomes over the years (Moffitt et al.

Mental Health Assessment
Social work plays a key role in the diagnosis, treatment and day to day living of individuals who
have a mental illness. The Australian Government Department of Health (2014) defines mental
illness as a health problem that significantly affects how a person feels, thinks, behaves, and
interacts with other people . The social workprofession has numerous dealings with this client base
through a multiplicity of practice contexts. It is therefore imperative that social workers have the
capacity to be able to recognise and appropriately respond to the needs of the individual;
understanding how mental illnessmay impact on an emotional, psychological, physical and
cognitive level.
This case study will consider the various components of a mental health assessment of the fictitious

The Dosage of Ionizing Radiation Increases the Risk of Cancer
On November 8, 1895, a German physics professor named Wilhelm Roentgen discovered x rays.
This advance in technology helped man explore the unknown of the human body without
performing surgery. Only the microscope could compete with x rays in the contribution to
medical vision (Gunderman 2). After the discovery of x rays, researchers found that there were
therapeutic and also cancerous results from radiation emissions. Before this discovery became
public, the Radium Watch Company began coating their watch dials with radium in order for
them to glow, to allow owners of these watches see the time, even at night. However, the women
workers, as watch dial painters, at the company would wet there brushes with their mouths to
create a finer point. After months of this practice, many of the women received cancerous tumors
and necrosis of the jaw. As a result, most were buried in lead lined coffins because of the high
emissions of radiation from their bodies. Lead is now used to shield radiation from patients that
are not receiving a full body scan. An x ray is made from a beam of high energy photons passing
through the body which are either diminished or blocked entirely when they hit subatomic particles,
like bone or metal. The denser and thicker the substance the brighter the image on the radiograph.
Both radiological scans, x rays and CT scans both use ionizing radiation to capture the images of the
human body.

Essay On Six School
Six schools. Six is the number of colleges I toured before I stepped foot on Colorado Mesa
University s campus. Six schools I considered calling home for the next four years. The campuses
fell within massive desert metropolises, rain hazed cities, negative temperature towns and areas
that reeked of farm animals. Six schools, and I never experienced the feeling that everyone
mentions when they find their destiny. Six schools, and I never once felt at home. This was until I
visited CMU. Colorado Mesa Universitysummed up everything I has been looking for within a
college; interactive atmosphere, outstanding nursing program, outdoor activities close by, and a

I want to make someone feel like they belong, and they have found their home, at Colorado Mesa
University.
Though I am excited to relocate from Fort Collins, I am most excited to meet other students
attending CMU in the fall. I believe that the first few weeks in college is crucial to collegiate
happiness and success. This time is imperative for socialization, meeting new friends, and getting
involved around campus and in the community. The Outdoor Program, Alternative Spring Break,
Club sports, Forensic Science Club and Mavrides are all motivating opportunities I plan on
considering once I arrive on campus.
My freshman year of high school I found myself overwhelmed by the course load at a new
school. I competed in 5A volleyball as a team captain, but unfortunately never forced myself to get
involved in clubs or community service throughout the year. Because of this, I missed out on
many chances to meet new people as a freshman. This is a decision I regret, as a senior. Come
sophomore year, I was determined to become more involved in both my school, and my community.
I first decided to join the Family Career and Community Leaders of America organization at my
school, which I was later president, and a multi city level officer for. By joining FCCLA, I have
been given the opportunity to meet thousands of other young leaders between State conferences,
and the National conference I attended. Through planning meetings, organizing conferences,

Cultural Values That Are Instilled Into Society By The...
Within the Japanese culture, one can find several cultural values that are instilled into society by
the Japanese creation myth. The Japanese creation myth begins with a man, Izanagi, and a woman,
Izanami, on a bridge with the task of creating the land of Japan. After this task was completed, the
two walked in opposite directions on the newly formed land until they met in the middle. Once they
met, the womanspoke first and then they procreated. The offspring was a failure and they asked
the gods why their attempts were not successful. The gods told them that it was because the
woman spoke first. The two walked around the land they created and met in the middle once
again. This time the man spoke first and the procreation was successful. After several births, the
woman gave birth to a fire child and she was burnt so severely she passed on to the underworld.
The man chased after her and when he found her decomposing body, he ran in terror. As he
washed away his horrifying experience, several more children were born. One of these was the
ancestor of the ruling familyof Japan. Japan s first ruler met a beautiful woman and asked for her
hand in marriage. Her family granted the ruler the woman and her sister. The ruler refused the sister,
even though she could grant their children immortality, because of her ugliness (Philippi). From
this myth, the reader can gather that Japan values men over women, beauty, and obedience to
authority. It is evident within the creation myth that

Revolutionary War Revolutionary Essay
By defining a revolution as a radical change of conditions , the Revolutionary War was
unquestionably a revolution. In determining whether the Revolutionary War was revolutionary or
not, one must assess the extent to which society transformed before, throughout, and after the war.
Although some colonists sought to preserve the rights they enjoyed from tradition and custom, the
Revolutionary War can be described as revolutionary because men put their life as well as their
honor on the line to fight in a war when triumph seemed an unreachable goal. This was done to
make radical changes such as formulating an entirely new system of government instead of creating
a monarchy, as they had known.

When people are over three thousand miles away from each other, representation can be difficult.
When America first separated itself from Britain, the founding fathers attempted to create the least
amount of similarities as possible. The need to be different from Britain was shown primarily
through the creation of the Articles of Confederation as they represented a strong reaction against
the strong central government of Britain. The Continental Congress adopted the Articles on
November 15, 1777 and they served as the United States first Constitution. There were many
problems that came with the Articles. The government they created was so weak that tasks could
not be completed efficiently. Because of the weak government, America could not grow
economically which led to political uncertainty. The government had no power to enforce any
legislation it passed and congress was denied the power to tax. Money was one of the greatest issues
with the Articles of Confederation. Since the government was denied the right to tax, they could
only request money from the states and these requests were often denied. The legislature never had

Book Napoleon’s Buttons by Penny le Couteur and Jay...
The book, Napoleon s Buttons, gets its name from an event that happened with the French
leader, Napoleon Bonaparte. The authors of the book, Penny le Couteur and Jay Burreson,
found it interesting that there could be a possibility of there being a link between the death of
the French soldiers during the 1812 winter war and the fact that their coat buttons were made of
tin because tin behaves differently when temperatures drop. That propelled Couteur and
Burreson to write this book. The book talks about seventeen molecules that changed history.
These molecules range from being used in food that people consume, in the form of salt to
clothes that people wear in the form of dyes. Various fields where these chemical molecules play
an important role have been covered and they include the biological as well as biochemical
industries. The focus of this book review would be on the use of these chemical molecules in the
line of medicine. Medicine is interconnected with our lives to such an extent that we cannot do
without them nor their effects, hence this is the focus of this book review. Medicinal herbs were
used to cure an array of illnesses such as wounds and helped in relieving pain. However, the
effectiveness of such herbs were limited because they could not help in curing infections.
Infections were a main reason behind the deaths of people in the past because once a person was
infected, there was no way to deal with that infection and cure it. That is how thousands of

The Treaty Of Versailles, A Treaty Between Germany And The...
The Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles was a treaty signed between Germany and the Allies. It was to stop the
war to end all wars (Woodrow Wilson). Every country or colony entered in this war had suffered
immense loss and unbelievable damage to the landscape where the battle had taken place. The
Treaty was meant to finally bring peace to the world, but instead, it only let more problems arise.
Worse ones that certainly had not been intended for. The Treaty of Versaillesonly brought peace for
so long, and after twenty one years, another devastating war had been released on the world.
However, the repercussions are solely because of the Treaty of Versailles, as it put all of the costs of
the war on Germany, including taking responsibility for starting it in the first place.
As to speak, Germany took the very rough brunt of the war. Including the costs that Britain didn
t want to deal with, and instead passed the blame. Germany was forced to take responsibility for
starting the war and all the losses and casualties to the Allied Forces. There were also countless
other financial weights that they had to deal with after the treaty was signed. Of course, and with
good reason as well, the German people were outraged by this. The treaty had been written only
by the Allies, and Germany was forced to play under their will if the country didn t want to be
invaded or annexed by the other side. It was a threat they knew would be carried out. Even to this,

Differences And Characteristics Of Inductive Reasoning
Characteristics of Inductive Reasoning
Inductive reasoning is not designed to produce mathematical certainty. Induction occurs when we
gather bits of specific information together and use our own knowledge and experience in order to
make an observation about what must be true. Inductive reasoning does not use syllogisms, but
series of observations, in order to reach a conclusion. Consider the following chains of observations:
Observation: John came to class late this morning.
Observation: John s hair was uncombed.
Prior experience: John is very fussy about his hair.
Conclusion: John overslept
The reasoning process here is directly opposite to that used in deductive syllogisms. Rather than
beginning with a general principle (People who comb their hair wake up on time), the chain of
evidence begins with an observation and then combines it with the strength of previous
observations in order to arrive at a conclusion.
The most basic kind of inductive reasoning is called generalization. You generalize whenever you
make a general statement (all salesmen are pushy) based on observations with specific members
of that group (the last three salesmen who came to my door were pushy). You also generalize
when you make an observation about a specific thing based on other specific things that belong
to the same group (my girlfriend s cousin Ed is a salesman, so he will probably be pushy.) When
you use specific observations as the basis of a general conclusion, you are said to be making an

Too Much Crying isn t a Good Thing
Crying is undoubtedly one of the most common humanistic features when it comes to the emotions
of the average person, due to the fact that every human being has shed tears for which ever
reasons their emotions led them to. However, crying can also be the result of many other issues
and can indicate a serious problem if done continuously and drastically to the point where it
becomes a serious concern. In adolescents, it is more normal to cry as the child may not understand
or know what to do about a situation, leaving them flustered, agitated, sad, angry, or any negative
emotion causing them to cry. With these things being said, when crying is understood to be the
result of an underlying deep rooted issue, the next step is to understand the enforcer that is keeping
the behaviorof crying continuous and figure out exactly how to decrease it to the point of normality.
Crying has also yet to be examined systematically in isolation from other problem behavior, such as
aggression or tantrums, during functional analyses (Hanley, Iwata, McCord, 2003). Identification of
variables that may maintain crying is especially important for populations who are susceptible to
psychiatric interventions (e.g., individuals who have intellectual disabilities and communication
deficits). The current study extended functional analysismethodology to crying with an adolescent
boy who had been diagnosed with intellectual disabilities. Results suggested that crying was
maintained by caregiver

The Grafin von Schonfeld with her Daughter by Elizabeth Louise Vigee LeBrun
In the University Of Arizona Museum Of Art, the Pfeiffer Gallery is displaying many art pieces
of oil on canvas paintings. These paintings are mostly portraits of people, both famous and not.
They are painted by a variety of artists of European decent and American decent between the mid
1700 s and the early 1900 s. The painting by Elizabeth Louise Vigee Lebrun caught my eye and

The little girl s dress gives the texture of lightness and seems like airy fabric that would be thin
and translucent. The time in this piece is very accurate of the late 1700 s and when viewing it, the
time seems classic. The emphasis of this piece is mainly the mother and the daughter, however
when looking at them you are drawn into looking at their realistic eyes. The eyes seem like the
focal point which draws the viewer in to the picture.
The relationship in the painting between the mother and daughter give it a definite asymmetrical
balance and maybe a little radial balance. A radial balance because of their eyes being the central
focus, then the faces, then the holding of each other, then where they are placed on the canvas, and
then the bench and the landscape. The colors used by the painter, also creates balance with in the
picture. The wine colored dress of the mother, red sash of the daughter s dress, ruby lips, and the
rosy cheeks give a warm feeling to the central focus of the mother and daughter. The cool color of
the sky is the same as the women s eyes as well as the trees and green on the mother s dress. These
balances give unity or a unifying feeling to the painting, especially between the mother and
daughter.
The idea of this piece is to show the connection between mother and daughter being painted. It
shows the time and the classic style of the

Kamisar s Argument Against Euthanasia
The right to live one s life on his or her own terms is a basic tenet in the modern world. In
American society, the people are given free reign (within legal and social boundaries, of course)
to choose how to live. They can choose where to go to school, what to learn, what they want to
work, when they want to retire, and so on and so forth. However, when people reach the end of
their lives, this right to autonomy seems to be restricted, especially in those who are terminally ill.
This autonomy sees itself at the center of the debate around the practice of euthanasia, a medical
procedure in which a patient with a terminal or incurable illnessis permitted to die in a painless
manner ( Euthanasia ). While one might think that allowing one who... Show more content on

the abstract realm. By placing the argument here, it loses context for the patient. Someone suffering

applying the context of each patient s situation, as Feinberg believes we should, doctors and
physicians will be able to better determine whether not euthanasia is an appropriate option for the
patient. While there may be concerns for medical misdiagnoses or last minute cures, these events

The Christian Apologetics
At the onset of the Christian faith, its followers faced a difficult period in which they had to deal

The Digital Conversion in Television Essay
The Digital Conversion in Television
Introduction
Television is now in the process of converting from analog to digital technology. The significance
of this change is greater than the introduction of color TV in the 1960 s, but more complicated
since conversion will require new equipment for all consumers. Unlike color TV, digital television
(DTV) uses a new kind of signal that does not fit within the structure of the old signal. DTV refers
to a specific standard being implemented in the United States to carry a television signal in digital
form through all stages of its transmission, not just for digital equipment such as video tape
recorders and satellite receivers that have already been used in conjunction with analog ... Show

HDTV has a specification called 1080i, which is so named because it has 1,080 horizontal lines
of resolution transmitted in an interlaced manner, which means that when the lines of each frame
of the video are sent, only the even numbered lines are sent for one frame, then only the odd
numbered lines of the next frame. Another HDTV format is 720p, which has 720 horizontal lines,
but all lines are progressively sent for each frame. One SDTV format is 480p (480 progressive
horizontal lines).
A DTV signal can carry five channels of digital audio at the level of quality used by compact discs.
This accommodates the demand for high quality, movie theater style sound. In the realm of analog
television, this level of sound quality can only come from recordings, digital satellite transmissions,
or digital cable signals, not over the air from a local TV station (Churchill).
An example of DTV s extra function and flexibility is the system called Program and System
Information Protocol (PSIP), a data service that allows TV users to view schedules and read
descriptions of programs transmitted through cable or on the air. This is one standard that the
National Cable Television Association and the Consumer Electronics Association agreed on; it is
probable that cable operators and television stations may devise numerous ancillary data services
related to entertainment or

What Really Happens to Us
The public influences the private to the extent that no one can leave the world s ideas or thoughts
that it throws onto them. Over time, their safe haven of their private space changes and just
becomes part of the vast empty world. Men and women can no longer be free to choose the way
they want to act; instead the public eye forces them into certain behaviors like gender roles. These
roles consist of how they should act, how they should speak, and how they should present
themselves. The United States of America s long tradition and definition of manliness has continued
to affect men s actions to be that which are associated with being ... Show more content on

In this story it primarily expresses what the idea of a man is, and how it that idea is extremely
narrow and regularly unfair. To help reinforce this, the author Paul Theroux gives an example in
his essay Be a man! strikes me as insulting and abusive. It means: Be stupid, be unfeeling,
obedient, soldierly, and stop thinking. (Theroux 1). That quote depicts Theroux s view of what
American society wants in men, and how it is exceedingly narrow and doesn t give much room
for anything else. Theroux is stating that that being a man means you have to follow one of these
traits. One of those points leads us that men have a sense of being brash, cold hearted, loyal,
warrior, and most importantly be tough. This sense of being tough is so dominate it allows for a
constant pressure to up hold this in the public eye. Like Theroux, many men have to abide by these
rules in order to within societal conformity. That means for males, they can only be seen as tough
when it comes to everything.
If a boy were to fall and scrape their knee and begin to cry at a young age, his father would most
likely respond to him by saying Stop crying, and be tough . But why would his father do such a
thing? The popular answer to that is because his father once said that to him when he fell and did
the same thing. This common example is exceptionally real and reinforces that men, whether boy or
adult have

Choose a novel or play and write a well organized essay in which you show how a specific death scene helps to illuminate the meaning of the work as a whole. Avoid mere plot summary. The novel Obasan, by Joy Kogawa, is a historical fictionnovel that takes place in multiple settings, yet they all have one thing in common: they were based mostly on War World II. Throughout this novel, a frequently brought up topic is death: it s shown to be one of the main ideas in this novel, both literal and figurative. The first death to be introduced was the death of Naomi s uncle, Sam. It shows in the novel that uncle Sam is a big part of Naomi s life, as she grew up with him and Obasan instead of her parents. The death of her uncle had been unexpected, as Obasan had said, There was no knowing. Death had been personified in They stuck tubes into his wrists like grafting on a tree but Death won against the medical artistry to exaggerate a type of hold Death had on Naomi s uncle. Research Paper On Abusive Relationships Abusive Relationships: The Flawed Ideas of Machismo Masculinity The term abusive relationship brings to mind a relationship of unequal power distribution. The perpetrator is usually imagined to be the husband in heterosexual relationships and we, generally, identify the wife as the victim of such cases of abuse. However, recent findings suggest that it is not always the husband who is the perpetrator. In many such cases, the dominant abusive figure is the wife. Although abuse exists in both homosexual and heterosexual relationships, we will be focusing on the latter in this article. While different forms of abuse against women are reported each year, there seems to a global, societal taboo on the issue of abuse against men. In such cases, the victim may feel like he is shielding the children from the abuser. Also, the victim may not want to end the relationship so as not to have to enter protracted custody battles or risk losing custody of his children. Of course, we cannot deny that Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) affects more women negatively than men in the global scenario: archaic laws and customs prevent women from seeking justice in many countries. Also, while studies have shown that women can be violent in intimate relationships, men are more likely to injure their partners more grievously than women. Critics of men affected by IPV argue that this is an anti feminist trend that seeks to undermine the positive strides the world has taken in acknowledging and attempting to combat domestic violence against women. However, it is our belief that violence can be perpetrated by anyone in any scenario. Jorge came into my life when I needed him the most. I was young and dumb, making bad life choices and he was mature and ready to settle down. He never judged me for my past mistakes but instead encouraged me to want better for myself. His acceptance showed me what a big heart he had and allowed me to trust him. For example, Alvida is a girl and she is the captain of her ship. Furthermore, she is depicted as a character who is strong and fear by both her crew and civilians. Furthermore, when the main character Monkey D. Luffy, fought with her, he fought with all his strength. In other words, he fought her as he would a male character. Essay about Frosts Tuft Of Flowers And Men A Look at the Theme of Separation in the Poetry of Robert Frost The creation of borders and boundaries has been around since the beginning of civilization. The division of property and possessions among individuals establishes a sense of self worth. The erection of fences and walls keeps property separate. Walls also serve as a means of separating worlds. Modern society demands the creation, and maintenance of these boundaries. In his poems, amp;#8220;The Tuft of Flowers, ; and amp;#8220;Mending Wall, ; Robert Frost explores the role that walls play in our lives. He examines how the lives of men are both separated, and drawn together by walls. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He serves to help lead the man to realize that life and beauty unite all things. Frost writes, amp;#8220; The butterfly and I had lit upon, Nevertheless a message from the dawn ; (19). By directing the man to the flowers, the butterfly becomes an important character in this poem. amp;#8220;Mending Wall ; takes up where the theme of amp;#8220;The Tuft of Flowers ; leaves off. In amp;#8220;Mending Wall ;, two neighbors repair the wall that divides their property. The speaker realizes that questioning the existing wall is senseless, but he likes to view the task of repairing the wall playfully. Frost writes, amp;#8220;Oh, just another kind of out door game ; (28). As if playing a game, the speaker tends to his side of the field, and his neighbor to the opposing side. Frost writes, amp;#8220;Spring is the mischief in me ; (28). By this, the speaker knows that the acceptance of the wall is a way of life, and that his questions against the wall will produce no substantial answers. The word Christian has been used extremely, and in some cases strangely, for over 2000 years. Historically, it was born in the ancient city of Antioch. There, according to Acts 11:26, the disciples were first called Christians (ESV). Since that first century usage, Christian has defined religious groups sects, armies, athletic endeavors, political parties, and a host of entities and ideas which probably would make those original disciples shake their heads in disbelief. I)Mackworth (1963) found that people can remember items that take less time to pronounce better than items that take longer to pronounce. II)Baddeley, Thomson, Buchanan(1975) found that systematically explored the effect of word length in terms of pronunciation time. They demonstrated that even when items are equated for number of syllables and word frequency, if one set of words takes less time to pronounce than another set, memory will be better for the shorter items. • 14. Star Spangled Banner And Star Spangled Banner, By... Bloodshed and the tyranny of battle has inspired art since the beginning of recorded history. In essence though, the main purpose of war is to protect or enhance the liberties of the people and their families fighting. Due to the complex and utter horrific experiences that happen during battle, naturally people want to dedicate a long standing piece of work to honor those who have endured those traumatic experiences for the greater good. Two examples of art being centered around war are the Star Spangled Banner, by Francis Scott Key, and a sculpture entitled The Fountain of Eternal Life, by Marshall Fredericks. When these two works are broken down into their key elements it is apparent that there are key similarities between the images these works create, and the reasons they were created; in addition to their connection to civil liberties. One must consider the differences between the works as well, such as the mediums in which they were created, the theme of the works, and what they were dedicated to. To be concise, both Key and Fredericks created two extremely different works of art that have overlapping ideals, and have a strong connection to civil liberties. Civil liberties are the basic human rightsguaranteed to every person. Those rights include ideas like the freedom of speech, press, and assembly, freedom of religion, and the open pursuit of happiness. The Dosage Of Ionizing Radiation Increases The Risk Of Cancer The Dosage of Ionizing Radiation Increases the Risk of Cancer On November 8, 1895, a German physics professor named Wilhelm Roentgen discovered x rays. This advance in technology helped man explore the unknown of the human body without performing surgery. Only the microscope could compete with x rays in the contribution to medical vision (Gunderman 2). After the discovery of x rays, researchers found that there were therapeutic and also cancerous results from radiation emissions. Before this discovery became public, the Radium Watch Company began coating their watch dials with radium in order for them to glow, to allow owners of these watches see the time, even at night. However, the women workers, as watch dial painters, at the company would wet there brushes with their mouths to create a finer point. After months of this practice, many of the women received cancerous tumors and necrosis of the jaw. As a result, most were buried in lead lined coffins because of the high emissions of radiation from their bodies. Lead is now used to shield radiation from patients that are not receiving a full body scan. An x ray is made from a beam of high energy photons passing through the body which are either diminished or blocked entirely when they hit subatomic particles, like bone or metal. The denser and thicker the substance the brighter the image on the radiograph. Both radiological scans, x rays and CT scans both use ionizing radiation to capture the images of the human body. ... The Japanese creation myth begins with a man, Izanagi, and a woman, Izanami, on a bridge with the task of creating the land of Japan. After this task was completed, the two walked in opposite directions on the newly formed land until they met in the middle. Once they met, the womanspoke first and then they procreated. The offspring was a failure and they asked the gods why their attempts were not successful. The gods told them that it was because the woman spoke first. The two walked around the land they created and met in the middle once again. This time the man spoke first and the procreation was successful. After several births, the woman gave birth to a fire child and she was burnt so severely she passed on to the underworld. The man chased after her and when he found her decomposing body, he ran in terror. As he washed away his horrifying experience, several more children were born. One of these was the ancestor of the ruling familyof Japan. Japan s first ruler met a beautiful woman and asked for her hand in marriage. Her family granted the ruler the woman and her sister. The government they created was so weak that tasks could not be completed efficiently. Because of the weak government, America could not grow economically which led to political uncertainty. The government had no power to enforce any legislation it passed and congress was denied the power to tax. Money was one of the greatest issues with the Articles of Confederation. Since the government was denied the right to tax, they could only request money from the states and these requests were often denied. The legislature never had enough money to run the government or to fulfill financial obligations to bondholders, soldiers, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Book Napoleon’s Buttons by Penny le Couteur and Jay... The book, Napoleon s Buttons, gets its name from an event that happened with the French leader, Napoleon Bonaparte. The authors of the book, Penny le Couteur and Jay Burreson, found it interesting that there could be a possibility of there being a link between the death of the French soldiers during the 1812 winter war and the fact that their coat buttons were made of tin because tin behaves differently when temperatures drop. That propelled Couteur and Burreson to write this book. The book talks about seventeen molecules that changed history. These molecules range from being used in food that people consume, in the form of salt to clothes that people wear in the form of dyes. Various fields where these chemical molecules play an important role have been covered and they include the biological as well as biochemical industries. The focus of this book review would be on the use of these chemical molecules in the line of medicine. Medicine is interconnected with our lives to such an extent that we cannot do without them nor their effects, hence this is the focus of this book review. Medicinal herbs were used to cure an array of illnesses such as wounds and helped in relieving pain. However, the effectiveness of such herbs were limited because they could not help in curing infections. Infections were a main reason behind the deaths of people in the past because once a person was infected, there was no way to deal with that infection and cure it. That is how thousands of ... • 30. The Treaty Of Versailles, A Treaty Between Germany And The... The Treaty of Versailles The Treaty of Versailles was a treaty signed between Germany and the Allies. It was to stop the war to end all wars (Woodrow Wilson). Every country or colony entered in this war had suffered immense loss and unbelievable damage to the landscape where the battle had taken place. The Treaty was meant to finally bring peace to the world, but instead, it only let more problems arise. Worse ones that certainly had not been intended for. The Treaty of Versaillesonly brought peace for so long, and after twenty one years, another devastating war had been released on the world. However, the repercussions are solely because of the Treaty of Versailles, as it put all of the costs of the war on Germany, including taking responsibility for starting it in the first place. As to speak, Germany took the very rough brunt of the war. Including the costs that Britain didn t want to deal with, and instead passed the blame. Germany was forced to take responsibility for starting the war and all the losses and casualties to the Allied Forces. There were also countless other financial weights that they had to deal with after the treaty was signed. Of course, and with good reason as well, the German people were outraged by this. The treaty had been written only by the Allies, and Germany was forced to play under their will if the country didn t want to be invaded or annexed by the other side. It was a threat they knew would be carried out. Even to this, Germany ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Differences And Characteristics Of Inductive Reasoning Characteristics of Inductive Reasoning Inductive reasoning is not designed to produce mathematical certainty. Induction occurs when we gather bits of specific information together and use our own knowledge and experience in order to make an observation about what must be true. Inductive reasoning does not use syllogisms, but series of observations, in order to reach a conclusion. Consider the following chains of observations: Observation: John came to class late this morning. Observation: John s hair was uncombed. Prior experience: John is very fussy about his hair. Conclusion: John overslept The reasoning process here is directly opposite to that used in deductive syllogisms. Rather than beginning with a general principle (People who comb their hair wake up on time), the chain of evidence begins with an observation and then combines it with the strength of previous observations in order to arrive at a conclusion. The most basic kind of inductive reasoning is called generalization. You generalize whenever you make a general statement (all salesmen are pushy) based on observations with specific members of that group (the last three salesmen who came to my door were pushy). You also generalize when you make an observation about a specific thing based on other specific things that belong to the same group (my girlfriend s cousin Ed is a salesman, so he will probably be pushy.) When you use specific observations as the basis of a general conclusion, you are said to be making an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Too Much Crying isn t a Good Thing Crying is undoubtedly one of the most common humanistic features when it comes to the emotions of the average person, due to the fact that every human being has shed tears for which ever reasons their emotions led them to. However, crying can also be the result of many other issues and can indicate a serious problem if done continuously and drastically to the point where it becomes a serious concern. In adolescents, it is more normal to cry as the child may not understand or know what to do about a situation, leaving them flustered, agitated, sad, angry, or any negative emotion causing them to cry. With these things being said, when crying is understood to be the result of an underlying deep rooted issue, the next step is to understand the enforcer that is keeping the behaviorof crying continuous and figure out exactly how to decrease it to the point of normality. Crying has also yet to be examined systematically in isolation from other problem behavior, such as aggression or tantrums, during functional analyses (Hanley, Iwata, McCord, 2003). Identification of variables that may maintain crying is especially important for populations who are susceptible to psychiatric interventions (e.g., individuals who have intellectual disabilities and communication deficits). The current study extended functional analysismethodology to crying with an adolescent boy who had been diagnosed with intellectual disabilities. Results suggested that crying was maintained by caregiver ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

ART CRITICISM PAPER ART CRITICISM PAPER The Grafin von Schonfeld with her Daughter by Elizabeth Louise Vigee LeBrun In the University Of Arizona Museum Of Art, the Pfeiffer Gallery is displaying many art pieces of oil on canvas paintings. These paintings are mostly portraits of people, both famous and not. They are painted by a variety of artists of European decent and American decent between the mid 1700 s and the early 1900 s. The painting by Elizabeth Louise Vigee Lebrun caught my eye and drew me in to look closely at its composition. The Grafin von Scholfeld with her Daughter is oil on canvas art piece painted in 1793. The little girl s dress gives the texture of lightness and seems like airy fabric that would be thin and translucent. The time in this piece is very accurate of the late 1700 s and when viewing it, the time seems classic. The emphasis of this piece is mainly the mother and the daughter, however when looking at them you are drawn into looking at their realistic eyes. The eyes seem like the focal point which draws the viewer in to the picture. The relationship in the painting between the mother and daughter give it a definite asymmetrical balance and maybe a little radial balance. A radial balance because of their eyes being the central focus, then the faces, then the holding of each other, then where they are placed on the canvas, and then the bench and the landscape. The colors used by the painter, also creates balance with in the picture. The wine colored dress of the mother, red sash of the daughter s dress, ruby lips, and the rosy cheeks give a warm feeling to the central focus of the mother and daughter. The cool color of the sky is the same as the women s eyes as well as the trees and green on the mother s dress. These balances give unity or a unifying feeling to the painting, especially between the mother and daughter. • 35. Kamisar s Argument Against Euthanasia The right to live one s life on his or her own terms is a basic tenet in the modern world. In American society, the people are given free reign (within legal and social boundaries, of course) to choose how to live. They can choose where to go to school, what to learn, what they want to work, when they want to retire, and so on and so forth. However, when people reach the end of their lives, this right to autonomy seems to be restricted, especially in those who are terminally ill. This autonomy sees itself at the center of the debate around the practice of euthanasia, a medical procedure in which a patient with a terminal or incurable illnessis permitted to die in a painless manner ( Euthanasia ). While one might think that allowing one who... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The significance of this change is greater than the introduction of color TV in the 1960 s, but more complicated since conversion will require new equipment for all consumers. Unlike color TV, digital television (DTV) uses a new kind of signal that does not fit within the structure of the old signal. DTV refers to a specific standard being implemented in the United States to carry a television signal in digital form through all stages of its transmission, not just for digital equipment such as video tape recorders and satellite receivers that have already been used in conjunction with analog ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... HDTV has a specification called 1080i, which is so named because it has 1,080 horizontal lines of resolution transmitted in an interlaced manner, which means that when the lines of each frame of the video are sent, only the even numbered lines are sent for one frame, then only the odd numbered lines of the next frame. Another HDTV format is 720p, which has 720 horizontal lines, but all lines are progressively sent for each frame. One SDTV format is 480p (480 progressive horizontal lines). A DTV signal can carry five channels of digital audio at the level of quality used by compact discs. This accommodates the demand for high quality, movie theater style sound. In the realm of analog television, this level of sound quality can only come from recordings, digital satellite transmissions, or digital cable signals, not over the air from a local TV station (Churchill). An example of DTV s extra function and flexibility is the system called Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP), a data service that allows TV users to view schedules and read descriptions of programs transmitted through cable or on the air. This is one standard that the National Cable Television Association and the Consumer Electronics Association agreed on; it is probable that cable operators and television stations may devise numerous ancillary data services related to entertainment or ... Men and women can no longer be free to choose the way they want to act; instead the public eye forces them into certain behaviors like gender roles. To help reinforce this, the author Paul Theroux gives an example in his essay Be a man! strikes me as insulting and abusive. It means: Be stupid, be unfeeling, obedient, soldierly, and stop thinking. (Theroux 1). That quote depicts Theroux s view of what American society wants in men, and how it is exceedingly narrow and doesn t give much room for anything else. Theroux is stating that that being a man means you have to follow one of these traits. One of those points leads us that men have a sense of being brash, cold hearted, loyal, warrior, and most importantly be tough. This sense of being tough is so dominate it allows for a constant pressure to up hold this in the public eye. Like Theroux, many men have to abide by these rules in order to within societal conformity. That means for males, they can only be seen as tough when it comes to everything. If a boy were to fall and scrape their knee and begin to cry at a young age, his father would most likely respond to him by saying Stop crying, and be tough .
