ABSTRACT
We report in this presentation on a current project of which the aim is to develop teaching approaches that engage doctoral students in working together as a research community to develop their critical writing and peer reviewing skills. We seek to foster in students a sense of collective endeavour in developing writing and research, and to encourage the sharing of ideas, drafts, and semi-formed thoughts in an atmosphere of mutual support. The project was launched via a residential critical writing weekend for students, featuring a range of taught sessions focussing on aspects of critical writing and reviewing and
featuring opportunities for students to engage in peer assessment activities. The students then formed an
editorial board for an online journal for doctoral students, through which they are involved in critical

Tell a Story! [Be the Batman]
We have been using storytelling to share our thoughts and feelings ever since flat screen televisions meant clay tablets and cave walls. Stories move us; they inspire us. And that is why your 110th presentation should not just include data. Because data might persuade people to consider your idea for a while, but it won’t inspire them to act; to do that, you need to drape your vision in a story that makes your audience think: “Hey! I can picture myself in his shoes!” Your story should fire their imagination and make them come alive- because a story has a key to that special place where mundane quantitative data is denied entry: our hearts.

I organized a focus group with 3 year 11 students from my old school to get feedback on a poster, magazine cover, and short film my class created, as well as an existing short film. Part I
For Paper #4 you will write a researched argument essay that addresses an issue related to the U.S. Judicial and/or prison system. Think about the documentary films we’ve watched (Into the Abyss, Lost for Life, The Farm), about any direct or indirect experiences you may have had, any discussions you may have engaged in (in personal as well as academic settings), any material you may have read (in and out of school). Decide on a topic that interests you, and devise a corresponding issue. The issue should be sufficiently complex – something debatable.
Your paper shall be 10 pages, typed, double-spaced. It shall include proper source citations (in-text citations, work cited page).
Follow these steps as you construct your paper:
Read what experts have already said about the issue.
Examine the various dimensions of the issue by analyzing and evaluating the experts’ arguments to determine which are the most convincing, which are reasonable but not terribly convincing, and which are flawed.
Articulate a thesis expressing your own position.
Discover solid reasons to support your thesis.
Return to the sources (research) to extract evidence you will use to back up each of your reasons. Ways to support your reasons:

- 1. Unsupervised Lesson 3rd April. Below is a past paper question from Section C: Single Film: Close Critical Study.... "Consider debates that have arisen in the critical reception of your chosen film, either at the time of its initial release or now or both." Clearly to answer a question such as this you need a good understanding of the critical reception the film received, both at the time it was released and subsequently In you booklet there are a range of articles that were written by reviewers at the time the film was released. Please read through them andanswer the questions below each article. Compare these reviews with the more recent ones you looked at with Ms Gillies. Now you need to supplement this with your own research and focus on more current reviews. As you are reading the reviews - TAKE NOTES headed up with the reviewers name and date it was written - then add bullet points on The things they are critical of or positive about. What key debates did the film stir up? Are there common themes/criticisms here? If so what? What is your view on it. Once you have completed this research you are to write a response to this essay question. Remember to use good structure: Introduction Paragraphs covering about 4 key points A conclusion, A central argument/view point that you refer to throughout the essay Specific quotes and supporting information Correct spelling and use of key words You should aim to write between 500 – 800 words DUE IN ON IN ON THE FIRST DAY – as I don’t teach you on that Tuesdayyou will need to either find me or email it!
