Lifestyle that Leads to Obesity
Have you been sitting around lately, watching TV? Eating when you re bored? If so, you need
to know that these are just a couple examples of the many things that can lead to obesity.
America is the most obese country is what you would think and or did think, but that is wrong.
America was the most obese country, but in 2013, Mexico surpassed the U.S. and it is now the
most obese country, having roughly 32.8 percent of adults being overweight and one third being
obese. America is in second place, having 31.8 percent being obese. Mexican teenagers also are one
third obese and the majority of overweight Mexican teenagers will stay obese and be at risk for
diseses. The average Mexican drinks 163 liters (46 gallons) per year, of soda; this is 40 percent
more than the average American who drinks 118 liters, or 31 gallons. Mexicans consume an
average of 650 cans a year of Coca Cola, which adds up to a little over 200 liters (52 gallons).
There is a small island in the south pacific though, called Nauru, that has an obesity rate of 71.7
percent which is actually the most obese country in the whole world. Now you re probably
wondering why I m telling you that Mexico is the most overweight country since Nauru has a
way higher obesity rate, and that is because Nauru is so small that we really only consider the
more populous countries. Nauru s population is only 9,400 people and the island is 8.108 square
miles, so it does not take very many people who may already be more likely

Cause Of The 2008 Financial Crisis
Causes of the 2008 financial crisis
Financial crisis has been prevalent since time immemorial. The world s economies have been
continually hit by the same and the 2008 financial crisis is definitely not the last appearance. The
financial sector involves complexity and contains one of the world s largest players and has
continually developed into large conglomerates sometimes too big to control. These financial
organizations have developed products that have become hard to regulate and impose control on
which has often led to their collapse. Major world governments and financial institutions, mostly
the central banks have the responsibility to make sure that these organizations are operating both
ethically and legally and within the bounds of the law. This is the institution of supervisory and
regulatory roles to monitor them.
Supervisory and regulatory structures have in the past failed to control the activities of these
enormous companies dealing in financial solutions especially where these organizations have
become larger than the country s individual economies. The financial companies engage in risks
too large for them to handle in a bid to generate more profits and when these ventures have gone
haywire, these companies have sunk.
Foster Magdoff (2009) wrote that the failure of the international financial markets in 2008 led to the
World s worst economic nightmare, with a dip in the market performance that led to the eventual
failure of companies operating therein.

Summary Of The Book A Will Of His Own
Will Book Summary In the book A Will of His Own: Reflections on Parenting a Child with
Autism by Kelly Harland, the author Kelly is a mom to Will who has Autism. She explains what
a day with Will includes. Kelly also tells about some of the bigger days in Will s life. In the first
section of her book she expresses the need for structure in Will s life. He does not like things to
change. He would often have a meltdown if a store closed or something was not like the way he
remembered it. Each day would need to be like th next to ensure that there were no meltdowns. If
something were to change it would need to be discussed with Will before it happened. For
example, the mom wanted to change her and her husband s comforter. She had to tell Will many
days before that it was going to change. However, even with... Show more content on

Kelly took Will to a preschool that was hard to get into. She and other parents would sit in the
classroom with their kids as a teacher taught their children. It was a little community where the
parents could interact with others and same with their children. Kelly could notice a difference
between Will and the other children at this preschool. One day she watched other children eat
candy from a place they did not know. The father of the other child became extremely mad which
caused the teacher to send Will and Kelly back home. Later on in the section Kelly describes the
moment she told Will that he was born with Autism. She talks about how she imagined it being
with her husband but the moment became right when they were at a school playground. When they
were at the playground the school bell went off even though it was not a school day. Loud noises
and unexpected things frightened Will. So in this moment Will had a meltdown. Kelly discussed
with Will that the reason that he get frightened is because of the fact that he has

Different Types Of Art Is Used Within The Pattern Of The Wood
Intarsia is the woodworking technique that uses varied shapes, sizes and different species of wood
that are fitted together to create a 3 dimensional, mosaic like picture. This type of art is created
through the selection of different types of wood, using their natural grain pattern and color to create
variations in the pattern. The different species and colors of the woodcontrasts lights and values.
Similarly, grain gives the art amazing texture and makes it very realistic. Wanting to make an
intarsia project, of an object or animal, you make a pattern of outlines and places you want to
shape to look realistic. After selecting the specific woods to be used within the pattern, each piece
of wood is then individually cut, shaped, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Mediterranean world in the Middle Ages was covered in vast woodlands that composed a
mixture of hard and softwood trees. The forests of Italy were abundant and diverse. Wood was a
main source of fuel for most of Europe for generating heat during the harsh winters. This heat
was also important for cooking, firing bricks, ceramics and glass. It was also used in casting and
forging a number of different metals. The building and mining industries relied mainly on the
local forests for beams for bridges, cranes, rafters, ceilings, and doors. A large amount of tree
species could not be used for lumber or heat. These species were used in luxury woodworking.
Some examples were sculpture, furniture, and intarsia decorations.
The word intarsia comes from the Italian word tarsia and intarsiare which means to inlay. It is
defined as a mosaic usually of small pieces of wood which are inserted and glued into hollows of
a wooden support that was popular in the 15th century Italy for decoration featuring especially
scrolls, arabesques, architectural scenes, and flowers (Wilmering). The palette of different of
intarsia artist were gathered from timber merchants or from the customer. These artists could use
up to 25 different species of wood for one intarsia decoration. The reason for the different species
is the grain, color and texture of each one is different. The

Sustainability and Urban Development
Sustainability and Development
Introduction
Sustainable development and sustainability have been the focus of many researchers in various
disciplines for quite some time now. The current distribution of natural resources and their
allocation is modeled on an infinite growth assumption. The mainstream economic perspective
assumes that the market will allocate resources in the most efficient way possible. Yet there are
many externalities that often left out of this model such as clean air, clean water, and the carrying
capacity of the Earth s natural systems. For example, when someone used oil as a source of fuel,
the pollution from its use is not counted in the standard economic perspective. Furthermore, the fact
that oil is a nonrenewable resource is also not effectively included in these models.
Sustainable development incorporates various social and economic objectives that try to
optimize the use of natural resources in the society. It is a broad topic but is centered on trying to
make the most efficient use of the resources that are available while also ensuring that there are
resources available for future generations. The main objective of sustainable development is to
achieve a reasonable and equitable distribution of resources that can offer a high level of well
being for all generations; those that are currently alive and those are yet to be born. In order to
achieve sustainability, the society and the planet as a whole has to have the regenerative ability to

The Corpse Flower
I had purchased a commercial residential high rise, including the rights to the back rent, which I
got at a substantial discount. However, after deducting what I owe, I was still just the proud
owner of mortgage papers. My joints ached as I made my way down the hall. Ten years ago, I
was a florist until my doctor diagnosed me with arthritis. I resolved then to get enough funds to
draw back and live as comfortably as I could. Buying poorly managed buildings, casting out the
dead beats, up the rent, sell and buy a bigger building was my strategy. I knocked on the door of
6A with my cane. Landlord! The sound of the afternoon soap opera that emanated from the
apartment went silent. I heard the footsteps approaching the door, the peephole went dark. I
banged again louder this time. I m the new landlord, come to pick up the rent. The door slowly
opened to reveal a woman in her late sixties. She wore a red dress of ankle length, flat shoes and
short grey hair. Forgive me, I thought you might be one of those leafy green men. That s all I
needed. A tenant who s not just slow in her rent, but also a nut job. Leafy green men? You must
have seen them, everyone in the building has. They re about half your height, dressed in leaves.
They say to speak calmly to crazy people and play along. No, I haven t seen one, but I just bought
this place and I need the rent. Oh, I have the money, She walked down the hall. It s in the bedroom.

How Did Broadway Shows Affect American Culture
Broadway Shows, Their Time Period and How It Relates to the American Culture Throughout
American history there has been many events that have affected the way the United States is
governed. Many of these events have been documented throughout letters, movies and plays that
recreate them for future generations. It is these events and time periods that allow America to grow
as a nation. When the United Stateswere merely colonies, the Revolutionary War had taken place
in which the colonists had gained their freedom from England. Although only в…“ of colonists
believed in the Revolution it was still a monumental event because the United States had gained
its freedom. Other events like World War 2 and 9/11 played a similar role because it had a
positive impact on the American culture. Smaller protests such as The Newsboy Strike of 1899
which occured in New York Citywas unknown to the general population of neighboring states but
had a huge impact in New York. These events further helped the government of New York to
grow as a state and reinform laws that helped the working class. In both the broadway shows,
Newsies and Hamilton the setting is recreated to mirror the time period in which the events being
portrayed have occurred as well as show the importance of them on the American society. Like
most events, The Newsboy Strike of 1899 could have been prevented but many factors lead to this
event which caused a great inconvenience to New York City. Due to the

Milestones Of Prenatal Development
Question 6: Major Milestones of Prenatal Development In the middle of a women s menstrual
cycle, an ovum bursts from one of her ovaries and is drawn into one of the fallopian tubes. The
corpus luteum releases a hormone that helps thicken the lining of her uterus, getting it ready for
the egg. After the egg is released, it moves into the fallopian tube. It stays there for about 24
hours, waiting for a single sperm to fertilize it. If one sperm does make its way into the fallopian
tube and burrows into the egg, it fertilizes the egg. In the first trimester, there s three prenatal
phases which are the germinal period (1 2 weeks), the period of the embryo(3 8 weeks), and the
period of the fetus(9 12 weeks). During the germinal period, the one celled zygote multiplies and

The Impact Of Social Media And Its Impact On Society
It is proven that social media has had a huge impact on the way we live our daily lives. Not only
has it changed the way we go about our days, it has changed the way we communicate and
interact with the ones we care the most about. Social media has positively and negatively
impacted our relationships with others. The original intent of social network was to allow
people to more readily stay connected with friends and family (Qualman, 286). Yet, how
regularly do we judge how much social media has affected the way we interface with those that
we are closest to? Social media has allowed us to connect with more people in various parts of
the world that we wouldn t necessarily meet on a week to week basis. With the expansion in the
number of contacts, we can observe that we have access to numerous more thoughts and assets.
It is a lot easier to meet people that have the same traits as you, and it is shown when out of five
couples meet online (Qualman, 274). Websites like E Harmony, Tinder, and Match.com make it
easier for single people to find other s online and communicate before even meeting them. Social
media has made it simpler to broaden your effective reach and grow it to incorporate individuals
you d get the chance to meet, or might want to know better. Many relationships have flourished and
grown into marriages because of these websites and apps and there is a potential these certain
people wouldn t have met without them. In the previous couple of years, online

The Important Beliefs Celebrated at Easter and How They are Celebrated
Easter Sunday comes at the end of holy week which consists of many days which have a
significant meaning. The six weeks leading up to easter is called lent and this is celebrated by
many people giving up one of their luxuries, for example, chocolates and sweets. They do this
because they are remembering when jesus was in the desert and was tempted by the devil and
how jesus rejected his offer. During the time of lent, comes a day called ash Wednesday which
certain churches have the ceremony of putting ash on to the foreheads of people as a symbol of

Good Friday remembers how jesus was crucified which is a serious and sombre occasion. It is
called Good Friday because people remember how jesus sacrificed his own life to save mankind.
The anglican, Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches are stripped of all colourful decorations,
crosses, candles and hangings. This is to remind the worshipers of the fact that jesus felt
deserted and desolate on the cross. On Good Friday, when people attend the church, the story of
The Passion is read, and in some churches the priest will enveil a crucifix and say this is the
wood of the cross on which the saviour of the world died. The people will then walk up to the
alter to kiss the feet of the carved christ as a mark of respect. Free churches will not have the
same ritual, but they will have a service in which the Passion story is read and thanks will be
given to Jesus for going on the cross and saving humanity from their sins.
Easter Saturday is when Roman Catholic, Orthodox and many Anglican churches keep an easter
vigil on the Saturday evening. The congregation gather outside the church where a bonfire is
burning. A large candle is brought out, called the Paschal candle. It has a cross on it and the greek
letters alpha and omega. The priest places five

Effects Of The Berlin Airlift
The Berlin Airlift and its Strategic Effects
Despite its beginnings as a logistical nightmare for the aircrews and aviators, the Berlin Airlift was
extremely effective in the role of containing the spread of communism into Berlin, while ensuring
the survival of capitalism for millions of its citizens.
After the conclusion of World War II, the city of Berlinwas divided into two major sections: East
and West Berlin. The western section was divided between the three allies and under the control of
Britain, the United States, and France, while the eastern portion was under the Soviet s control.
The portion of Berlin owned by the western powers had become a small hold on capitalism in a
sea of Marxist communism. On 24 June 1948, the Soviet Union cut off all ground routes into the
western portion of Berlin. This would leave approximately 2.5 million Berlin citizens without the
United States supplies they had been receiving. It would also leave the roughly 6,500 western
troops without ground level support, surrounded by 16,000 soviets (Owens 70).
The United States had only a few options and they were not looking great. They could attempt to
resolve this diplomatically, but that could take more time than was available. A military pullout
from Berlin could lead to discredit the United States and leave Berlin to fall completely under
Soviet control (Owens 70). The United States military governor of Berlin at the time was General
Lucas Clay. General Clay was told that going by

The Reid Technique Of Interrogation
This particular study is captivating because it narrows down the causes of wrongful convictions of
innocent people, whether it s the interrogators applying inappropriate methods of the Reid
Technique, such as misclassification, coercion, psychological manipulation, and contamination.
(Orlando) The Reid Technique of interrogationconsists of essentially three steps. Custody and
isolation (i.e., the suspect is detained and isolated, anxiety and uncertainty are generated in order to
weaken resistance). Confrontation (i.e., the suspect s guilt is assumed and he or she is confronted
with alleged incriminating evidence that may or may not be genuine; denials are rejected, even if
they happen to be true, and the consequence of continued denial is emphasized), and minimization
(i.e., the interrogator tries to gain the suspect s trust and provides face saving excuses for the crime,
including suggesting that it was an accident or that the victim deserved it) (...) During the
interrogation the investigators use tactics of imbedding trust to lure detainees to comply and
achieve a legal outcome which could lead to reducing longer sentencing if the detainee confesses.
Also if there are multiple co perpetrators investigators look to probe the detainee that someone has
cast blame on the individual, so therefore they must engage with the policeand own up to their part
in the crime (Douglas Rita). The Reid Technique not only is it used illegitimately but it placing

Performance Enhancing Drugs Should Be Baned In Sports
There are many different opinions on Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs); however, they are
banned in every sport. PEDs enhance an athlete s performance greatly and unnaturally. They
improve a variety of things that will improve an athlete s level of play considerably. Although
these drugs are prohibited, some athletes still choose to take the risk and use these drugs; some
even claim that PEDs should be allowed because it allows the viewers see the peak of human ability

Comparing The And Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde
Compare the use of secrets with in the two main characters of the both novels Victor Frankenstein
and Dr Jekyll (including Mr Hyde)
Both the novels are based around secrets. Victor and Dr Jekyll both have a big secret that happens
in the novel. Both the main characters have a thirst for knowledge leading to their biggest secrets
occurring. Their scientific experiments don t go as planned and these novels teach us as the reader
you can t keep secrets as the truth will always come out.
Victor Frankenstein believes he can create life but for the time of the novel people were very
secretive and didn t like change, they didn t like people knowing their business. The people were
not open to the idea of new creations. Many people were religious so they believed God made life.
The same with Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Jekyll kept his lab very secretive as he knew people would
be against his experiments or would not believe in them. Victor is very interested in the key of
life it was the secrets of heaven and earth I desire to learn . Victor wants to know the unknown, he
is very interested to search for the secrets of life. The world was to me a secret which I desire to
divine . The curiosity shown by Victor is ultimately what drives him to try and discover the
secret of life. Shelley uses the word divine to mean to figure out , as he searches for a way in which
one can create life, like the way God creates life.

Improving Public Speaking And Oral Communication Skills
In my research online on How to improve public speaking or oral communication skills I would
like to discuss the source I found on how to improve your public speaking with body language.
We went over this several times in class and it was in our test we took at the beginning of our
course. Body language is an important aspect of giving a speech, because you are not just
speaking with your mouth when you present. You use body language to communicate with your
audience as well. We use body language in everyday life as well, when we are talking to our
friends, or when we are afraid or upset about something. Nonverbal communicationis in our
gestures, eye contact, facial expressions, posture, and movement. Hand gestures can add to your
speech or take away from your speech tending on how you use them. It is important that your make
your hand gestures as natural as possible. It says to stand straight with your arms bent at the waist
and relax them.
It is important not to hug your body, lock your hands behind your back, or grasp and lean on the
lecture. This brings to mind how I grasp the lecture when I get up to speech, because I do not
know what to do with my hands. I feel more comfortable away from the lecture and trying to
incorporate gestures into my speech. It helps me feel more connected with my audience, because it
is a means of communication that feels natural. It also talks about how you can tell if your gestures
are adding or taking away from your speech by watching

Zeffirelli And Hamlet Comparative Essay
When examining Kenneth Branagh s (1996) and Franco Zeffirelli s (1990) film of Hamlet both
directors interpret William Shakespeare s work quite differently. Both films excel in different
aspects demonstrating strengths and weaknesses on either side. Branagh explores Hamlet as a
vengeful character somewhat more as Shakespeare had intended. Zeffirelli emphasizes the dialogue
in the film using the tone rather than developing the character based on hatred. However despite the
films differences they both effectively capture the overall essence of indecision leading to personal
tragedy. Hamlets inability to take decisive action ultimately results in many of the characters
dying, including himself. Scenes such as Hamlet s To be or Not to be soliloquy in Act III, Scene I;

By looking in the mirror, he uses it as a self confidence method to reassure himself about his plan

Zeffirelli sets the scene with Hamlet played by Mel Gibson surrounded by corpses, ideal for the
thought of suicide. Even so this appears to be the most sane depiction of Hamlet, as he doesn t
truly seem to be contemplating suicide. Gibson begins his soliloquy already aware of the fact that
he has no intention of murdering himself. Instead, he laments his belief that suicide is not a choice.
Gibson places less importance on the opening line, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the
significance of the soliloquy in a way of making it look like a man just thinking to

collection in particular, entitled The Ambitious Guest, was fascinating to Davis because of the
horrifying ending in which everyone dies. This ending completely went against what Davis had
been exposed to growing up in a society coddled by Romanticism, and she enjoyed the change.
Together, these influences created a pioneer for a crucial development in literature: the transition
from Romanticism to Realism. Beginning in 1830, which is, ironically, the year Davis was born,
a new literature movement called Romanticism began. This movement was characterized by
stories laden with sentimentality and focused on the individual. One notable example of a
romanticized story would be Sir Walter Scott s Ivanhoe, in which Ivanhoe falls madly in love
with Rowena and does everything in his power to win her over. This story was one of the many
that Davis was exposed to growing up, and she quickly came to reject the ideals of Romanticism.
Davis saw these works of literature as egotistical and melodramatic, and while she enjoyed good
stories, she determined that they could not make any

Essay On The Cave
In Plato, Republic, Book VII, the core of the book revolves around justice and its implications from
both an individual and collective perspective. Plato does not have Socrates argue that justice
requires getting everyone out of the cave because in actuality, there are two parts to justice and the
cave: the truthand the false. According to Plato, people often live in illusion. Illusions appeal to
sensible people and their senses, whereas reality does not function with reason alone, it includes a
combination of ideas and the truth (Plato 405). Therefore, the need to have everyone leave the
cave is not present because each individual is there for a different reason which may not call for
leaving the cave.
Plato argues that when analyzing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The At The Edge Of The Castle Training Field Essay
At the edge of the castle training field, bathed by the rays of a waning autumn sun, Percival
reached for Fleur s hand as they waited for the knighting ceremony to begin. Deena and Ida, their
girls, sat in the grass, vibrating with excitement. Banon lay down between them, basking in the
glory of belly rubs, as the dog always did. It seemed impossible that the girls were ten and Banon
was almost eleven. Hadn t they come into Percival and Fleur s life only yesterday?
A cool afternoon breeze kissed Percival s face, and with that, he gazed at the sparse clouds above
and recalled the past. He was almost thirty three, and somehow, the past seemed closer than ever.
So much had happened during the past decade.
When Deena and Ida turned one, Percival and Gwaine, on a mission in Ismere, had been captured
and forced into slavery by Morgana. That was a dark and frightening time for Percival and Gwaine,
yet eventually, Merlin and King Arthurrescued them. Percival recalled his homecoming, when
Fleur carrying the twins in her arms Rion, and Banon charged from the castle and ran to him,
sobbing with joy. Rion all but pulled Percival from his horse, and Percival and his family stood
outside in the downpour, reunited and grateful. He had never felt more loved than in that moment.
Further, Arthur had managed to negotiate peace with King Odin, and Camelot and Cornwall had not
warred in years.
Regardless, there had been more dark times.

The Relationship Between Troilus And Criseyde
The relationship between Troilus and Criseyde in Geoffrey Chaucer s adaptation of their tragic
love story notably hinges on the perception of Troilus s manhod. The interpretation of Troilus as
a feminized male character, and the consequent view that he was not manly enough to keep
Criseyde as his lover, exemplifies the importance Chaucer places on gender roles in the poem.
Troilus s passive nature, as a result of his lovesickness, led to his failure to obey the normative
masculine patterns of behavior. His lack of action is ultimately the reason why his relationship
with Criseyde fails. While we know the tragic ending to their story is inevitable, Chaucer s Troilus
and Criseydepresents gender as a central cause for its ending. In the first portrait of Troilus, Chaucer
presents us with a manly young knight at ease with his respectable and authoritative position:
This Troilus, as he was wont to gide
His yonge knyghtes, lad hem up and down
In thilke large temple on every side,
Beholding ay the ladies of the town,
Now here, now there; for no devocioun
Hadde he to non, to reven hym his reste,
But gan to preise and lakken whom hym leste (I. 183 189)
Troilus is represented here as a strong leader. He guides the knights through the temple and gazes
at the ladies of the town as he pleases. He mocks the other knights who foolishly fall in love; Troilus
is above that type of behavior. After the God of Love shoots him with his arrow, Troilus becomes
smitten with Criseyde in one

Analysis Of Seated Nude By Aristide Maillol
Throughout history we see many things reused or repeated. This is true in art, many artworks
use influences of previous artists and or styles for their work. The reuse of old ideas is present
in many artworks to date. One piece created in the last century is Seated Nude by Aristide Maillol
which was created in 1902. By using his experiences in France and his travels around Europe,
Maillol experienced many different cultures. With the presence of past cultural artifacts in our as

Basically, her main argument was women need to make their presence known and contribute to
major leadership decisions that define the success of their companies, just like their male peers.
The book Lean was thought provoking and amazing. Essentially, some of the scenarios that
were talk about speaks volumes to the reader on a personal level. Primarily, it is like relating to
situations that you were part of at some time in your personal or professional life. Surprisingly,
some readers would assume that this book was written with the intentions of showing flaws in the
characteristics of women when it came to their desires to become leaders. Personally, it is my
belief that women are generally less ambitious than men in their careers, because they assumed that
they would not be able to juggle family life while holding down a leadership position. The few that
decide to pursue leadership roles most times succeed and set themselves apart from their male
counterparts. Frankly, the fight for women in leadership has to be a joint venture by both women
and men or the inequality fight would be ineffective. Sheryl Sandberg stated in her introduction:

Narcotic Dressing Methods
Pain is the most predominant symptom experience after an injury and dressing changes only add to
the pain. A method is required to decrease the amount of pain during a dressing change to help
promote wound healing and increase hand function (Guo, Deng, Yang, 2014). Some of the
treatments we use presently in the hospital to decrease pain, such as analgesics, can cause
respiratory depression, decrease bloodpressure and other side effects (Guo et al., 2014, p.116).
Another treatment used is a narcotic dressing which can significantly increase the cost of treatment.

Guo et al. s (2014) states that when analgesics are unavailable, this tool is convenient for nurses
to use. There are many resources necessary to implement virtual reality distraction. The study
used many devices including: a pair of ultra high resolution 3D glasses, headphones, mouse,
computer and the 3D film (Guo et al., 2014). These resources may not be readily available in
undeveloped Countries. They also may have a large cost that some hospitals may not be able to
afford. This can be another limitation in regards to who is able to access the resource. In the
future, knowing that a patient s pain can be relieved by nonpharmacological means will help
provide better care. Many patients do not like taking analgesics in fear that they will become
addicted. This method may help alleviate the patients anxiety since the fear of addiction is not
present if they are not taking analgesics. The institution that the patient is receiving care at may not
have the resources needed for virtual reality. However, knowing that the pain is decreased with
virtual reality distraction will allow nurses to adapt this method to what they have available. For
example, allowing the patient to watch television, listen to music, or play a game on their mobile
devise will help distract them during the dressing change.

Leaves And Survivor Essay
A novel is often defined as an invented prose narrative that is usually long and complex and
deals especially with human experience through a usually connected sequence of events. ( ) The
basis of a novel is very broad and features many different types of writing styles and genres
throughout time. Novels such as House of Leaves and Survivor are written in a different way than
White Noise, but all still follow the basic framework of a novel. What binds the different types of
novels together is the elements presented within them. They all feature many of the same literary
techniques and literary elements. Even though some novels contain different styles of writing and
different stories, they are all still considered a novel. Fictionnarratives written in prose can be seen
dating back to Rome and Greece. How does one differentiate from those written in ancient times
and those written in the eighteenth century? Ian Watt in his book The Rise of the Novel says that
realism is the major thing that separates the two. ( ) He looked to many historians and novelists and
says they have seen realism as the defining characteristic which differentiates the work of the early
eighteenth century novelists from previous fiction. ( ) With this, he says that the novel officially
began in the eighteenth century. Agreeing with Watt, the English Department at Brooklyn College

Importance Of Water Conservation Essay
Water, the source of life, is essential in supporting both our daily and business activities. In our
daily activities, we need water to make food, to shower, to wash clothes, and to drink to
maintain our body energy, etc. In business activities, we need water to operate restaurant, hotel
facilities like spas and hot tubs, and to generate power, etc. Based on how much we rely on
water, there needs no further emphasis on the importance of water in our lives. Yet, water, this
finite resource, is getting more and more scarce due to either excessive use of water or poor
awareness of water conservation. And as human develops and industrialization process speeds up,
our demand for water has become greater and greater. If we do not pay attention to water
conservation, the situation will get worse, which will lead to drought and affect the nature at the
worse. Therefore, it is our responsibility to conserve water in our daily life, and more importantly
in our business operations. According to a report conducted by United States Environmental
Protection Agency, hotels and restaurants water usage account for fifteen percent of the total water
use in commercial and institutional facilities in the United States (Saving Water), so there are
many opportunities to conserve water in these two sectors, and we are going to discuss what can

The Themes Of Intertemporal Price Relationships And...
Over the past hundred years, the topics of intertemporal price relationships and commodity storage
have yielded a diverse range of research questions, and a number of interrelated, yet sometimes
contradicting theories. This chapter gives a summary of the most influential theories on these
subjects, and relates them to the thesis. The four main themes identified are the theory of normal
backwardation, the theory of price of storage, the theory of competitive storage and the spatial
temporal interpretation of storage. The main contributions to the literature will be grouped along
these themes, in a more or less chronological order. It must be noted that with the passage of time,
competing commodity storage theories evolved and interacted with one another in a way that

He is not able to dissociate fiction from reality. In the eyes of Don, the novels of knight errantry
serve as a guide for how to live. The Don believes that the knights are role models that all able
people should strive to live by. It is the utmost honor to live the life of a knight errant. He
defends all accounts of knight errantry, and if he happens upon someone who disagrees with his
opinions, he disregards them because he assumes they are not a knight errant and, therefore,
would not understand. When the Canon defamed his precious books the Don replied, I consider
that it is you who are out of your senses and under some spell, for you have taken it upon yourself
to utter such blasphemies again what has been so well received in the world and so widely
accepted as the truth that anyone who denies it, as you do, deserves the same punishment that you
say you inflict on books that annoy you when you read them (453). The Don then continues to
combine historic facts with those of his chivalric fantasy in his explanation to the Canon of
reliability of the novels. Don Quixote truly cannot separate fact from fiction. In the truest sense of
insanity, he believes that the novels of night errantry with their absurd claims are not only plausible,

Homeless People s View On The Homeless
Here in America there is a high percentage of homeless people. People often label homeless
people as lazy, not willing to work, or they believe they are just looking for hand out. But that is
just other people s views on the homeless. My point of view is that maybe they had a rough start

position that they are now. Although there is people who are actually suffering due to the fact
that they are homeless there are people who pretend to be homeless just so they can get an extra

Personally, I believed that homeless people were actually homeless until the day I witnessed

Basketball Is An Evolving Game
Basketball is an evolving game, so the rules of the game must evolve with it. It is important that
The National Basketball Association adapt to the changing game styles, because it is your duty as
the head of an organization, to give the best product possible. As the number of games plagued with
intentional fouls increases, the number of fans will decrease. It is your job as the jurisdiction of the
NBA, to make sure that the game does not regress, and that the fans are getting what they want. The
solution to the problem of intentional fouling in the NBA is to give coaches the option of
inbounding the ball instead of taking free throws. Intentional fouling is when a player fouls another
player with the intent of putting them on the free throwline. This is called, The Hack a Shaq
technique, because Hall of Fame player, Shaquille O Neal, was often targeted with intentional
fouls. Players are targeted with the Hack a Shaq technique when they do not shoot free throws
efficiently. When a player shoots a low enough percentage from the free throw line, statistically
they will not score as many points as if they were to shoot from the field. As you can see in the

they would come back heroes, however they did not know what happened beyond the cheerful and
brave faces seen in the news papers and the blissful time the soldiers had in their letters home. This
made many more men go to war. Things gradually changed, death, disease, mud, it had suddenly hit
that to fight for your country was not such an honour. Soldiers firstly began to write poetrybecause
poetry was the most important mode of expression for those who were shocked and disillusioned
by the realities of the First World War. I will be

Brooke never knew what life was like in the trenches so all of his poems have a positive attitude
towards the war. I am studying a poem by Siegfried Sassoon called Base Details . Sassoon was a
gallant officer who won the Military Cross as prize for bravery. He hated the massacre that war
was and the misconduct of the generals and politicians who made decisions of the war, he
thought they did not have the right to decide how or when people die. He protested against war
by his poetry and making a statement in The Times. He stopped fighting for the war after he was
wounded during the Battle of Arras and was sent home. He lived until 1967. All his poems were
negative towards war as he aimed to speak the truth about it. The last two poems I am studying
are by a man named Wilfred Owen. Owen is one of the most important poets from the wartime.
Once war broke he found a great desire to join in the war effort and became an officer. He was
sent home to England after a huge shell burst near him during the war. After this experience his
views changed dramatically on the war. He wrote the following to his mother, That one of Christ
s essential commands was passivity at any price! Suffer dishonour and disgrace but never resort
to arms. Later on he met Sassoon in Craig Lockhart War Hospital . Sassoon encouraged Owen s
poetic writing. I will be studying two of Owen s negative poems. I will begin comparing the poems
by exploring the positive attitudes

President Franklin D. Roosevelt s New Deal
When President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected in 1932, he took office in one of the worst
economic crises in American history. The preceding three years were three years of significant
hardship that took a toll on the nation s morale. He won the presidency in a landslide vote over
the fairly conservative incumbent Herbert Hoover showing the American people were desperate
for changes that could restore the nation to economic prosperity seen in the 1920 s. Once he was
inaugurated, he quickly jumped into action. In the first couple of years of his presidency he
passed legislation that created a few dozen government programs trying to fix anything from
unemployment to fraud in the stock market. Most of these programs were successful. By the 1940
s, most of the public s confidence had been restored as well, exemplifying the extent of the success
of the New Deal. Franklin D. Roosevelts New Deal was successful because it created programs that
restored the public s morale and that brought relief to many Americans. As of a result of the
government programs created by the New Deal, restoring American morale was a success. The
Tennessee Valley was hit very hard by the economic downturn. Since the soil was poor, farmers
has poor crop yields. The main source of income for the region was crops. Perhaps one of the most
ambitious programs that was a part of the New Deal, the Tennessee Valley Authority
, or the TVA,
helped fix these problems therefore restoring morale in a very

Government Surveillance Of The United States
Over the past few years, government surveillance in the United States has become a widely
debated issue with two completely different sides. The National Security Agency, a government
agency known for it s efforts in spying and surveillance, has been at the center of this issue since it
s founding in the 1950 s. The Cold War had just begun and the United Statesgovernment was doing
anything they could to find potential terrorists and communists. In fact, many famous people
including Einstein were being spied on by the government to find citizens with potential ties to
the Soviet Union. (New York Times New Details Emerge from the Einstein Files; How the FBI
Tracked His Phone Calls and His Trash) As the cold war came to an end in the early 90 s, NSA
spying seemed to come to an end as well. However, their efforts stepped up significantly after the
terror attacks that occurred on 9/11. After 9/11, the government was on high alert for anybody that
could be a potential terrorist. The NSA quickly began spying on foreigners suspected of being
involved in terrorist activities or associating with potential terrorists. (Wikipedia Mass Surveillance
in the United States) Soon after this, they started intercepting phone conversations and even internet
traffic through a program known as PRISM. This program was kept secret for quite a while until
NSA contractor Edward Snowden leaked thousands of documents to reporters. (PBS How Edward
Snowden Leaked Thousands of NSA Documents)

Mandating Paternity Leave
As the world is emerging, parental roles are experiencing a shift. It is very common to have
professional companies and organizations offer mothers paid time off. Typically, this maternity
leave is at least six weeks. New fathers, however, don t often get this same luxury, which is
unfortunate. In order for a father to better support the motherof their child and/or personally care
for their child, a father should be granted paid paternity leave. Many argue that not mandating
paternity leave is serving men and their careers far better than if the policy were to be established.
The opposing side believes that if the creation of paternity leave becomes, mandatory, it will do
more harm than good especially for the men who don t become fathers.... Show more content on

Men present can be a great deal of physical and emotional support towards women after birth.
About women experience postpartum depression, which is a type of depression that follows
childbirth and can be triggered from hormonal changes, fatigue, and mental adjustments to
motherhood(SГ©journГ©). Mothers often need the support of their spouse during that time,
because it can lead and help mothers or co parents in their well being for an easier transition into
motherhood. A woman s body goes through a lot right after childbirth both emotionally and
physically(SГ©journГ©). Women begin adjusting to the new roles, the new bodies, and the new
schedules. So, having their partners around comforts them and helps them feel abler. Having
fathers around can also help the stress of the woman because she doesn t feel overwhelmed with
doing everything on her own and can take care of herself while the father takes care of the house
and baby. It is not the presence of the father, which is important to take into account, but rather his
participation in the care of the baby, so fathers need to be on a leave to participate in helping
reduce the risk of postpartum

The Role Of Iris In Greek Mythology
Iris was the goddess of the rainbow in Greek mythology. Iris traveled on the rainbow to earth to
give messages to the humans. She appeared in front of people in a humanly way to reveal the
orders of Zeus or of any god to them. Iris was not only the goddess of the rainbows but she was
also a messenger, the gods messenger. Iris also had another duty, she carried the water from the
Styx River every time the gods had to take a solemn oath. Her duty might seem like an easy duty,
but it was actually very important one. It was very important for Iris to take the gods the water, if
she didn t they couldn t have swore by it.
Iris was known as the goddess of both the sea and the sky. Iris was described as a young, beautiful
goddess who represented the rainbow. She also was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The people believed that her presence was a sign of hope or a bridge that connects heaven and earth.
Iris was the daughter of Thauma who was the sea god, and Electra who was the ocean nymph. She
also had siblings like Arke, Aello, Celaeno, and Ocypete. Iris married Zephyr, and they had an
offspring which they named Eros. During the war between the Olympians and
Titans, Iris was fighting on the Olympians side. Even though, her sister, Arke, was on the side of
the Titans. Iris sister, Arke, betrayed the Olympians and sided with the Titans to be their
messenger. This act showed how Iris was willing to fight against her own sister s side for the

Olympians. Iris was important because without her the humans on earth would not know the gods
desires or what they wanted.
Iris had a couple of strengths one of them being faithful to her husband, Hera, and to the
Olympians as well. She also had a couple of weaknesses such as her defined role in life. The
archetype that she represents is a servant because she is always available for the ones who need her
or are above her level. I learned that Iris overall had a very calm life other than being

Organ And Tissue Regeneration And Organ Systems
In the human body, the integration of cells into tissues, organs and organ systems is the
propelling force behind maintaining homeostasis. Due to the intricate relationship of organ
systems with each other, a dysfunction in one organ might have a domino effect on other tissues
and organs within the body and since the human body is far from perfect, mutations, drugs, or
pathogens may lead to cellular damage at a microscopic level, which could then lead to the
deterioration of organs at a macroscopic level. In the past, organ failure was fatal and very little
could be done to reverse the process. However, thanks to the integration of various disciplines with
present day technology, organs and tissues can be regenerated through a multitude of distinct
procedures involving a team of individuals across various professions. Without the incorporation
of the works of doctors, mathematicians, physicists, material scientists, biochemists, and
molecular biologists, these life saving procedures may have not been possible. Organ and tissue
regeneration is prevalent in many aspects of nature, such as in the regeneration of starfish arms or
planarians. In fact, according to Mayo Clinic, the human liver is also known to regenerate itself in
response to mild damage. However, the damage to organs and tissues can be irreversible, such as
extensive liver cirrhosis caused by hepatitis or excessive alcohol consumption or a severe
myocardial infarction that can lead to the death of heart tissue.

  • 2. Lifestyle that Leads to Obesity Have you been sitting around lately, watching TV? Eating when you re bored? If so, you need to know that these are just a couple examples of the many things that can lead to obesity. America is the most obese country is what you would think and or did think, but that is wrong. America was the most obese country, but in 2013, Mexico surpassed the U.S. and it is now the most obese country, having roughly 32.8 percent of adults being overweight and one third being obese. America is in second place, having 31.8 percent being obese. Mexican teenagers also are one third obese and the majority of overweight Mexican teenagers will stay obese and be at risk for diseses. The average Mexican drinks 163 liters (46 gallons) per year, of soda; this is 40 percent more than the average American who drinks 118 liters, or 31 gallons. Mexicans consume an average of 650 cans a year of Coca Cola, which adds up to a little over 200 liters (52 gallons). There is a small island in the south pacific though, called Nauru, that has an obesity rate of 71.7 percent which is actually the most obese country in the whole world. Now you re probably wondering why I m telling you that Mexico is the most overweight country since Nauru has a way higher obesity rate, and that is because Nauru is so small that we really only consider the more populous countries. Nauru s population is only 9,400 people and the island is 8.108 square miles, so it does not take very many people who may already be more likely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Cause Of The 2008 Financial Crisis Causes of the 2008 financial crisis Financial crisis has been prevalent since time immemorial. The world s economies have been continually hit by the same and the 2008 financial crisis is definitely not the last appearance. The financial sector involves complexity and contains one of the world s largest players and has continually developed into large conglomerates sometimes too big to control. These financial organizations have developed products that have become hard to regulate and impose control on which has often led to their collapse. Major world governments and financial institutions, mostly the central banks have the responsibility to make sure that these organizations are operating both ethically and legally and within the bounds of the law. This is the institution of supervisory and regulatory roles to monitor them. Supervisory and regulatory structures have in the past failed to control the activities of these enormous companies dealing in financial solutions especially where these organizations have become larger than the country s individual economies. The financial companies engage in risks too large for them to handle in a bid to generate more profits and when these ventures have gone haywire, these companies have sunk. Foster Magdoff (2009) wrote that the failure of the international financial markets in 2008 led to the World s worst economic nightmare, with a dip in the market performance that led to the eventual failure of companies operating therein. ... He does not like things to change. He would often have a meltdown if a store closed or something was not like the way he remembered it. Each day would need to be like th next to ensure that there were no meltdowns. If something were to change it would need to be discussed with Will before it happened. One day she watched other children eat candy from a place they did not know. The father of the other child became extremely mad which caused the teacher to send Will and Kelly back home. Later on in the section Kelly describes the moment she told Will that he was born with Autism. Different Types Of Art Is Used Within The Pattern Of The Wood Intarsia is the woodworking technique that uses varied shapes, sizes and different species of wood that are fitted together to create a 3 dimensional, mosaic like picture. This type of art is created through the selection of different types of wood, using their natural grain pattern and color to create variations in the pattern. The different species and colors of the woodcontrasts lights and values. Similarly, grain gives the art amazing texture and makes it very realistic. The Mediterranean world in the Middle Ages was covered in vast woodlands that composed a mixture of hard and softwood trees. The forests of Italy were abundant and diverse. Wood was a main source of fuel for most of Europe for generating heat during the harsh winters. This heat was also important for cooking, firing bricks, ceramics and glass. It was also used in casting and forging a number of different metals. The building and mining industries relied mainly on the local forests for beams for bridges, cranes, rafters, ceilings, and doors. A large amount of tree species could not be used for lumber or heat. These species were used in luxury woodworking. Some examples were sculpture, furniture, and intarsia decorations. The word intarsia comes from the Italian word tarsia and intarsiare which means to inlay. • 6. Sustainability and Urban Development Sustainability and Development Introduction Sustainable development and sustainability have been the focus of many researchers in various disciplines for quite some time now. The current distribution of natural resources and their allocation is modeled on an infinite growth assumption. The mainstream economic perspective assumes that the market will allocate resources in the most efficient way possible. Yet there are many externalities that often left out of this model such as clean air, clean water, and the carrying capacity of the Earth s natural systems. For example, when someone used oil as a source of fuel, the pollution from its use is not counted in the standard economic perspective. Furthermore, the fact that oil is a nonrenewable resource is also not effectively included in these models. Sustainable development incorporates various social and economic objectives that try to optimize the use of natural resources in the society. It is a broad topic but is centered on trying to make the most efficient use of the resources that are available while also ensuring that there are resources available for future generations. The main objective of sustainable development is to achieve a reasonable and equitable distribution of resources that can offer a high level of well being for all generations; those that are currently alive and those are yet to be born. In order to achieve sustainability, the society and the planet as a whole has to have the regenerative ability to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Corpse Flower I had purchased a commercial residential high rise, including the rights to the back rent, which I got at a substantial discount. However, after deducting what I owe, I was still just the proud owner of mortgage papers. My joints ached as I made my way down the hall. Ten years ago, I was a florist until my doctor diagnosed me with arthritis. I resolved then to get enough funds to draw back and live as comfortably as I could. Buying poorly managed buildings, casting out the dead beats, up the rent, sell and buy a bigger building was my strategy. I knocked on the door of 6A with my cane. Landlord! The sound of the afternoon soap opera that emanated from the apartment went silent. I heard the footsteps approaching the door, the peephole went dark. I banged again louder this time. I m the new landlord, come to pick up the rent. The door slowly opened to reveal a woman in her late sixties. She wore a red dress of ankle length, flat shoes and short grey hair. Forgive me, I thought you might be one of those leafy green men. That s all I needed. A tenant who s not just slow in her rent, but also a nut job. Leafy green men? You must have seen them, everyone in the building has. They re about half your height, dressed in leaves. They say to speak calmly to crazy people and play along. • 10. Milestones Of Prenatal Development Question 6: Major Milestones of Prenatal Development In the middle of a women s menstrual cycle, an ovum bursts from one of her ovaries and is drawn into one of the fallopian tubes. The corpus luteum releases a hormone that helps thicken the lining of her uterus, getting it ready for the egg. After the egg is released, it moves into the fallopian tube. It stays there for about 24 hours, waiting for a single sperm to fertilize it. If one sperm does make its way into the fallopian tube and burrows into the egg, it fertilizes the egg. Social media has positively and negatively impacted our relationships with others. • 13. Effects Of The Berlin Airlift The Berlin Airlift and its Strategic Effects Despite its beginnings as a logistical nightmare for the aircrews and aviators, the Berlin Airlift was extremely effective in the role of containing the spread of communism into Berlin, while ensuring the survival of capitalism for millions of its citizens. After the conclusion of World War II, the city of Berlinwas divided into two major sections: East and West Berlin. The western section was divided between the three allies and under the control of Britain, the United States, and France, while the eastern portion was under the Soviet s control. The portion of Berlin owned by the western powers had become a small hold on capitalism in a sea of Marxist communism. On 24 June 1948, the Soviet Union cut off all ground routes into the western portion of Berlin. This would leave approximately 2.5 million Berlin citizens without the United States supplies they had been receiving. It would also leave the roughly 6,500 western troops without ground level support, surrounded by 16,000 soviets (Owens 70). The United States had only a few options and they were not looking great. They could attempt to resolve this diplomatically, but that could take more time than was available. A military pullout from Berlin could lead to discredit the United States and leave Berlin to fall completely under Soviet control (Owens 70). The Reid Technique Of Interrogation This particular study is captivating because it narrows down the causes of wrongful convictions of innocent people, whether it s the interrogators applying inappropriate methods of the Reid Technique, such as misclassification, coercion, psychological manipulation, and contamination. (Orlando) The Reid Technique of interrogationconsists of essentially three steps. Custody and isolation (i.e., the suspect is detained and isolated, anxiety and uncertainty are generated in order to weaken resistance). Confrontation (i.e., the suspect s guilt is assumed and he or she is confronted with alleged incriminating evidence that may or may not be genuine; denials are rejected, even if they happen to be true, and the consequence of continued denial is emphasized), and minimization (i.e., the interrogator tries to gain the suspect s trust and provides face saving excuses for the crime, including suggesting that it was an accident or that the victim deserved it) (...) During the interrogation the investigators use tactics of imbedding trust to lure detainees to comply and achieve a legal outcome which could lead to reducing longer sentencing if the detainee confesses. Also if there are multiple co perpetrators investigators look to probe the detainee that someone has cast blame on the individual, so therefore they must engage with the policeand own up to their part in the crime (Douglas Rita). Although these drugs are prohibited, some athletes still choose to take the risk and use these drugs; some even claim that PEDs should be allowed because it allows the viewers see the peak of human ability which is more entertaining. We went over this several times in class and it was in our test we took at the beginning of our course. Body language is an important aspect of giving a speech, because you are not just speaking with your mouth when you present. You use body language to communicate with your audience as well. We use body language in everyday life as well, when we are talking to our friends, or when we are afraid or upset about something. Nonverbal communicationis in our gestures, eye contact, facial expressions, posture, and movement. Hand gestures can add to your speech or take away from your speech tending on how you use them. It is important that your make your hand gestures as natural as possible. It says to stand straight with your arms bent at the waist and relax them. It is important not to hug your body, lock your hands behind your back, or grasp and lean on the lecture. Zeffirelli And Hamlet Comparative Essay When examining Kenneth Branagh s (1996) and Franco Zeffirelli s (1990) film of Hamlet both directors interpret William Shakespeare s work quite differently. Both films excel in different aspects demonstrating strengths and weaknesses on either side. Branagh explores Hamlet as a vengeful character somewhat more as Shakespeare had intended. • 21. The Reception And Influence Of Rebecca Harding Davis Among the multitudes of upper class women in the nineteenth century, struggling with their own problems, few felt the need to speak out for others, especially the lower classes. However, Rebecca Harding Davis observed the suffering of all humanity and decided to give everyone a voice through her writings. Throughout her career, Davis wrote an innumerable amount of works advocating for equal rights among all people, right up until her death in 1910. The following paper will analyze and discuss the reception and influence that Rebecca Harding Davis s works of literary realism had on the hierarchy of society, in relation to class, from the nineteenth century to the present. Furthermore, Davis s own personal experiences will also be discussed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beyond her parents, Davis was also influenced by many notable authors who showed her that everyday life and people could actually be depicted in literature. Among these notable authors, Davis particularly favored Nathaniel Hawthorne s Twice Told Tales, and the stories within this collection shocked Davis at their boldness. One of these short stories within Hawthorne s collection in particular, entitled The Ambitious Guest, was fascinating to Davis because of the horrifying ending in which everyone dies. This ending completely went against what Davis had been exposed to growing up in a society coddled by Romanticism, and she enjoyed the change. Together, these influences created a pioneer for a crucial development in literature: the transition from Romanticism to Realism. Beginning in 1830, which is, ironically, the year Davis was born, a new literature movement called Romanticism began. This movement was characterized by stories laden with sentimentality and focused on the individual. One notable example of a romanticized story would be Sir Walter Scott s Ivanhoe, in which Ivanhoe falls madly in love with Rowena and does everything in his power to win her over. This story was one of the many that Davis was exposed to growing up, and she quickly came to reject the ideals of Romanticism. Davis saw these works of literature as egotistical and melodramatic, and while she enjoyed good stories, she determined that they could not make any ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Plato does not have Socrates argue that justice requires getting everyone out of the cave because in actuality, there are two parts to justice and the cave: the truthand the false. According to Plato, people often live in illusion. Illusions appeal to sensible people and their senses, whereas reality does not function with reason alone, it includes a combination of ideas and the truth (Plato 405). • 25. The Relationship Between Troilus And Criseyde The relationship between Troilus and Criseyde in Geoffrey Chaucer s adaptation of their tragic love story notably hinges on the perception of Troilus s manhod. The interpretation of Troilus as a feminized male character, and the consequent view that he was not manly enough to keep Criseyde as his lover, exemplifies the importance Chaucer places on gender roles in the poem. Troilus s passive nature, as a result of his lovesickness, led to his failure to obey the normative masculine patterns of behavior. His lack of action is ultimately the reason why his relationship with Criseyde fails. While we know the tragic ending to their story is inevitable, Chaucer s Troilus and Criseydepresents gender as a central cause for its ending. In the first portrait of Troilus, Chaucer presents us with a manly young knight at ease with his respectable and authoritative position: This Troilus, as he was wont to gide His yonge knyghtes, lad hem up and down In thilke large temple on every side, Beholding ay the ladies of the town, Now here, now there; for no devocioun Hadde he to non, to reven hym his reste, But gan to preise and lakken whom hym leste (I. 183 189) Troilus is represented here as a strong leader. Intentional fouling is when a player fouls another player with the intent of putting them on the free throwline. This is called, The Hack a Shaq technique, because Hall of Fame player, Shaquille O Neal, was often targeted with intentional fouls. Players are targeted with the Hack a Shaq technique when they do not shoot free throws efficiently. When a player shoots a low enough percentage from the free throw line, statistically they will not score as many points as if they were to shoot from the field. As you can see in the Appendix, seven of the top ten games with the most foul shots by a single player have been in the last ten years. Hack a Shaq is hurting the game of basketballbecause teams are using the strategy more and more. Hack a Shaq creates slow and unentertaining games, due to the increased number of free throws. • 42. Different Attitudes of the First World War as Expressed... When war first broke out in 1914 the general attitude towards it was patriotism. Many young men grabbed the chance to fight for their country and show the women their braveness, they thought they would come back heroes, however they did not know what happened beyond the cheerful and brave faces seen in the news papers and the blissful time the soldiers had in their letters home. This made many more men go to war. Things gradually changed, death, disease, mud, it had suddenly hit that to fight for your country was not such an honour. Soldiers firstly began to write poetrybecause poetry was the most important mode of expression for those who were shocked and disillusioned by the realities of the First World War. I will be ... I am studying a poem by Siegfried Sassoon called Base Details . Sassoon was a gallant officer who won the Military Cross as prize for bravery. He hated the massacre that war was and the misconduct of the generals and politicians who made decisions of the war, he thought they did not have the right to decide how or when people die. He protested against war by his poetry and making a statement in The Times. He stopped fighting for the war after he was wounded during the Battle of Arras and was sent home. He lived until 1967. All his poems were negative towards war as he aimed to speak the truth about it. The last two poems I am studying are by a man named Wilfred Owen. Owen is one of the most important poets from the wartime. Once war broke he found a great desire to join in the war effort and became an officer. He was sent home to England after a huge shell burst near him during the war. After this experience his views changed dramatically on the war. He wrote the following to his mother, That one of Christ s essential commands was passivity at any price! Suffer dishonour and disgrace but never resort to arms. Later on he met Sassoon in Craig Lockhart War Hospital . Sassoon encouraged Owen s poetic writing. I will be studying two of Owen s negative poems. I will begin comparing the poems by exploring the positive attitudes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. President Franklin D. Roosevelt s New Deal When President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected in 1932, he took office in one of the worst economic crises in American history. The preceding three years were three years of significant hardship that took a toll on the nation s morale. He won the presidency in a landslide vote over the fairly conservative incumbent Herbert Hoover showing the American people were desperate for changes that could restore the nation to economic prosperity seen in the 1920 s. Once he was inaugurated, he quickly jumped into action. In the first couple of years of his presidency he passed legislation that created a few dozen government programs trying to fix anything from unemployment to fraud in the stock market. Most of these programs were successful. By the 1940 s, most of the public s confidence had been restored as well, exemplifying the extent of the success of the New Deal. Franklin D. Roosevelts New Deal was successful because it created programs that restored the public s morale and that brought relief to many Americans. As of a result of the government programs created by the New Deal, restoring American morale was a success. The Tennessee Valley was hit very hard by the economic downturn. Since the soil was poor, farmers has poor crop yields. The main source of income for the region was crops. Perhaps one of the most ambitious programs that was a part of the New Deal, the Tennessee Valley Authority , or the TVA, helped fix these problems therefore restoring morale in a very ... • 45. Government Surveillance Of The United States Over the past few years, government surveillance in the United States has become a widely debated issue with two completely different sides. The National Security Agency, a government agency known for it s efforts in spying and surveillance, has been at the center of this issue since it s founding in the 1950 s. The Cold War had just begun and the United Statesgovernment was doing anything they could to find potential terrorists and communists. In fact, many famous people including Einstein were being spied on by the government to find citizens with potential ties to the Soviet Union. (New York Times New Details Emerge from the Einstein Files; How the FBI Tracked His Phone Calls and His Trash) As the cold war came to an end in the early 90 s, NSA spying seemed to come to an end as well. However, their efforts stepped up significantly after the terror attacks that occurred on 9/11. After 9/11, the government was on high alert for anybody that could be a potential terrorist. The NSA quickly began spying on foreigners suspected of being involved in terrorist activities or associating with potential terrorists. (Wikipedia Mass Surveillance in the United States) Soon after this, they started intercepting phone conversations and even internet traffic through a program known as PRISM. This program was kept secret for quite a while until NSA contractor Edward Snowden leaked thousands of documents to reporters. (PBS How Edward Snowden Leaked Thousands of NSA Documents) While ... • 47. Mandating Paternity Leave As the world is emerging, parental roles are experiencing a shift. It is very common to have professional companies and organizations offer mothers paid time off. Typically, this maternity leave is at least six weeks. New fathers, however, don t often get this same luxury, which is unfortunate. In order for a father to better support the motherof their child and/or personally care for their child, a father should be granted paid paternity leave. Many argue that not mandating paternity leave is serving men and their careers far better than if the policy were to be established. The opposing side believes that if the creation of paternity leave becomes, mandatory, it will do more harm than good especially for the men who don t become fathers.... • 49. Organ And Tissue Regeneration And Organ Systems In the human body, the integration of cells into tissues, organs and organ systems is the propelling force behind maintaining homeostasis. Due to the intricate relationship of organ systems with each other, a dysfunction in one organ might have a domino effect on other tissues and organs within the body and since the human body is far from perfect, mutations, drugs, or pathogens may lead to cellular damage at a microscopic level, which could then lead to the deterioration of organs at a macroscopic level. In the past, organ failure was fatal and very little could be done to reverse the process. However, thanks to the integration of various disciplines with present day technology, organs and tissues can be regenerated through a multitude of distinct procedures involving a team of individuals across various professions. Without the incorporation of the works of doctors, mathematicians, physicists, material scientists, biochemists, and molecular biologists, these life saving procedures may have not been possible. Organ and tissue regeneration is prevalent in many aspects of nature, such as in the regeneration of starfish arms or planarians. In fact, according to Mayo Clinic, the human liver is also known to regenerate itself in response to mild damage. However, the damage to organs and tissues can be irreversible, such as extensive liver cirrhosis caused by hepatitis or excessive alcohol consumption or a severe myocardial infarction that can lead to the death of heart tissue. ...
