This case study is a big pill to swallow, especially as I personally have no experience in this area.
First, I would involve my teachers in the development of an action plan as well as the educational

Walking in I felt ridiculous for being worried a few hours earlier because the atmosphere was so

Have you ever wondered why our society is built on about what other people think? Well it s
probably because they re too afraid to stand up for what they think is right. During our generation
the use of fiction has influenced us in such a way that it can mirror and reflect the fears that
plagues our society to this very day. Two short stories that display this is Once Upon a Time by
Nandine Gordimer and The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. The writers creation behind these stories
helped engage people s minds and enlightened them to the social concerns in a certain way that
reality could not. They shaped fiction into a whole new direction that it reflected the cultural
values, societal fears and the current events for the public to envision. Yet it also provided a mirror
for real life.
The short story Once Upon a Time was authored by a South African writer Nandine Gordimer
originally published in 1989. The story is based upon how people can create their own downfall at
which they cannot allow themselves to be ruled by fear all the time. The story politically relates to
the apartheid which was a system of racial segregation. It was enforced through legislation by the
National Party, who were the reigning party in South Africafrom 1948 to 1994. It was then that the
rights of the black inhabitants of South Africa had been decreased. Yet the white supremacy and
Afrikaner minority rule was still maintained. Gordimer was born in a small South African town in
the 1930s.

Bradford uses a bland, matter of fact style of writing which is common for the time period in
which he lived. He often avoids long, drawn out literary techniques instead focusing on clearly
stating his opinions. His tone is especially evident in his description of the Pilgrim s journey
across the ocean, According to the usual manner, many were afflicted with seasickness
(Bradford). Bradford chooses to express events as simply as he can, allowing himself to ghost
over tedious details to instead focus on his underlying purpose. Unlike Bradford, Byrd prefers to
make use of a more sarcastic tone in his text, often taking his descriptions into great detail. He
pokes fun at influential and important events, often removing the severity from situations with a
humours flare. Several repeated misadventures of this kind did for some time allay the itch of
sailing to this new world, but the distemper broke out again (Byrd). Byrd s writing is compiled of
witty lines and blunt remarks that prove his distaste for the early American settlers. It is clear he
disapproves of the Pilgrim s methods but his words lack the malicious undertone that is clear in
Bradford s text when he mentions practices he does not fully agree

An Appeal In Favor Of That Class Of Americans
There were two very clear schools of literary criticism included in this piece. The first school of
criticism that can be found in this writing is the historical criticism. Historical criticism considers
the time in history in which the text was written and/or in which the text takes place. The time
period that Lydia wrote this piece in was directly related to the piece itself. She wrote about what
was occurring in history to educate the people of that time along with readers afterwards in order
to fully understand what was happening. If the time period were any different I am sure that her
pieces would have reflected those moments in time. The second form of literary criticism that can

It opened my eyes to so much new information that I had no idea about before, and if I was able
to be educated by this information I couldn t imagine the effect it would have had on her readers
back then. Her ability to be real, direct and not sugar coat the information is what really set her
apart. I think many people still tip toe around the topic of slavery but Lydia did not. Not only was
the piece itself impressive but her ability to take a leap and put herself out there was truly
admirable. She knew the topic was risky but that didn t stop her. Not only was it a risky topic
but she was also a woman writer and during that time period for many woman writers, that would
have been enough. Lydia didn t care whose toes she stepped on or who she offended she was
going to speak her mind and let her thoughts be known and that was the most incredible thing I
took away from her
