The Tempest By William Shakespeare And Mama Day By Gloria...
The Tempest by William Shakespeare and Mama Day by Gloria Naylor are two fantastic stories
that both belong to the genre magical realism, which is where magical elements are incorporated
into realistic fiction. Prospero the main character is robbed of Dukedom and marooned on an
island with his infant daughter where he meets natives and fire demons who do his bidding. Mama
Day the main character in Gloria Naylors novel is a no nonsense woman who uses her magic to
help the other residents of their island. Even though Naylor denies that Mama Day is modern
retelling of the Tempestit is hard not see that there are similarities between the stories. However,
there are some differences. Prospero takes justice into his own hands, just as the characters
around Mama Day take their situations into their own hands. They do not trust Mama Day s
ways until they are forced to ask for her help. Whereas Prospero and Miranda might seem like
parallel characters because they both use magic, Miranda knows its limits and uses it to help
others, while Prospero only discovers the limits of magic after he gives it up.
After breaking his staff and throwing his books into the sea, Prospero is left with little to no
power of his own. It is in his last speech in the play, in the epilogue, that he realizes that his magic
is nothing without outside help. He no longer has the outside power of his books and staffs to
make his magic work so he is weak and vulnerable. Prospero realizes he will never get off

Ibsen And Chekhov
Anton Chekhov was so bored by Ibsen s The Wild Duck he remarked that Ibsen does not know life
and that Ibsen is no dramatist
It might be argued that Chekhov felt Ibsen to be in some ways, as a thinker, too like himself.
Ibsen and Chekhov share a number of beliefs: individualism, sincerity, the loathsomeness of
tyranny, freedom for women. Tolstoy even condemned the seagull for being like Ibsen: mere
verbiage leading nowhere .
But Chekhov employs a different technique to Ibsen to produce a sense of reality in The Cherry
Orchard .
The orchard, the obvious focal piece of the play, is to be sold a month after Madame Ravensky s
arrival. Lopakhin believes that the only way the orchard estate can be saved is by chopping down

Ranyevskaya memories of the orchard as a fantastic playground disallow her to see the truth that
the cherry orchard was just her parents business and it is time to change the business because
times have changed. Every one of the many characters was carefully planned out to show some
purpose in the message conveyed in The Cherry Orchard. Chekhov is able to show that the core of
humanity is full of ludicrous emotions and ideas. The importance of the use of comedy in the play
conveys with the importance of comedy in our lives. It shows the reader how the most ridiculous
moments and decisions are probably the most important ones. The decisions of the characters are
full of faults that posses something ludicrous in them which allows this to be considered a comedy.
Both characters are made even more human , by their honorable traits, and minor disreputable
qualities. Lopakhin and Madame Ravensky s characters are incompatible in the other s mind.
Madame Ravensky is a member of the falling aristocracy who is a lost romantic trapped in a
fantasy world on the orchard while forgetting her troubles in the real world. Contrarily, Lopakhin
is money driven, sometimes vulgar, and socially rising individual. Lopakhin is trying to make a
future by overcoming his past, but remains genuine and practical in his offering help. Both
characters are clashing individuals, but neither are to be judged as either good or bad. There are no
heroes

Science Project Synthesis Essay
For this year s science project, I would like to test the effects of both mineral and commercial
sunscreens on human skin and coral reefs. In current news, the island chain and United States
state, Hawaii is planning on banning common sunscreens for the detrimental effects on the coral
reefs. I would like to test the sunscreens for the detrimental effects on human skin as well to
answer the common question, Why should I care? With this project, I will be able to educate the
public on not only the effects of chemicals on marine life, but also on humans as well. Also,
determine if there is a way not to wear sunscreenat all and still be protected from the sun s UV rays.
In this experiment, I will be testing the effects of both chemical (commercial) sunscreens and
mineral (alternative) sunscreens on human skin. Chemical and mineral sunscreen act in completely
different ways. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), chemical sunscreens
contain chemicals that act as endocrine disruptors, are estrogenic, and may interfere with thyroid
and other hormone processes in the body. The most common chemical in these sunscreens... Show

subject needs to check with their doctor to see if they are qualified for this type of testing. I will be
conducting this experiment in, I believe, that is the most appropriate setting, the beach. This
environment is where people get most of their sunburns for the direct sunlight people get during

Trigger Warnings
Trigger warnings are statements that begin with a piece of writing or any other material that
alerts the reader or viewer that there may be distressing material. The argument of Trigger
Warnings being a requirement on college campuses is a big controversial debate in today s
society. Trigger warnings are being debated whether it s helpful for students or it interferes with
the first amendment of college professors. According to an online survey from the Modern
Language Association and the College Art Association, nearly half of respondents (45%) think or

Explain The Panama Canal Modernization
Introduction:
In this assignment I will first explain the Panama Canal modernization and then I will discuss
about the industry experts/forecasters prediction about its impact on east and west coast of U.S.
followed by the detailed analysis to evaluate the accuracy of the prediction. Furthermore, based on
the analysis, I will present my opinion for rejecting or agreeing with the forecaster s prediction of
the panama canal s positive impact on intermodal traffic market share of east coast ports and west
coast ports, western railroad of U.S.
Overview:
The Panama Canal expansion is one of the biggest developments in maritime trade in last few
decades. When the canal first opened in 1914, it reduced 8,500 miles and several weeks of transit ...

ports to gulf or east coast U.S. ports as a result of Panama Canal expansion.
Most businesses in the area numbered as 5, currently rely on West Coast ports to receive goods
namely Los Angeles Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle, and Vancouver. After the Panama Canal
expansion, shipping through the East Coast will be especially attractive to businesses that are more
price sensitive and less time sensitive.
Therefore, for companies in the 5th region, it will become cheaper to handle goods through East
Coast ports, although doing so will add a few weeks to the total transit time but a justification for
this potential switch will highly depend on a company s time preferences, price sensitivity, and
costs of working capital.
Thus, there is a prediction from forecasters that, that West Coast ports and western railroads would
see a significant drop in intermodal traffic market share. Eastern and Southern ports and railroads,
on the other hand, would see a corresponding increase.
Analysis to find out accuracy of the prediction:
So, after 18 months, is the prediction

Gender Roles
But instead I heard a soft flannelly voice I barely recognized, saying, I d rather have you decide

will consume her. Marriage will force Marian to become a submissive wife, which is a role
assigned to females by society. The day Mariam got engaged, she became powerless and Peter

Causes of the Downfall of Mughal Empire
CAUSES OF THE DOWNFALL OF MUGHAL EMPIRE BACKGROUND The downfall of the
mughal empire can be attributed to two major factors: 1) Weaknesses of the mughals 2) Strength
of the East India Company. The Mughal Empire, which had reached its zenith during the rule of
Shah Jahan and his son, began to decline after the rule of Aurangzeb. In fact, the decline began
during the last days of Aurangzeb. The Mughal Empire reached its greatest extent in the time of
Aurangzeb Alamgir, but it collapsed with dramatic suddenness within a few decades after his
death. The Mughal Empire owes its decline and ultimate downfall to a combination of factors. The
death of Alamgir in 1707 is generally regarded as the beginning of the gradual decline, and... Show

Absence of navy: The Mughals had no navy and only maintained small ships that were no match
for the well equipped ships of the foreign traders. It was this weakness that the French and the
British used to their advantage, and were eventually able to establish their control over India.
Rise of New Powers: New powers such as the Sikhs, Jats and Marathas came onto the scene.
Gradually they broke off from the Mughal domination and established their own independent
states. Foreign Invasions: The invasions of Nadir Shah and Ahmad Shah Abdali proved fatal for
the Mughal Empire. Not only were the Indians defeated but their weakness was exposed and
India became as easy prey to other foreign powers too.The weakened Mughal Empire invited
havoc in the form of the Persian king Nadir Shah, in 1738 39. On his orders a general massacre of
the citizens of Delhi was carried out, resulting in the death of 30,000 people. Another threat to the
Mughal Empire came from the Afghans of Rohilkhand, lying northeast of Delhi. By the middle of
18th century, the Rohillas became independent of the Mughal rule. At the same time the Jats also
raised their heads against the central rule. Punjab: Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh guru, had
organized the Sikhs into a military force. After his death, his disciple Banda Bahadur carried on his
his struggle against the Mughals. However, Banda was finally captured and put

An Analysis Of Toni Morrison s Desdemona
1. Introduction
I exist in between, now: between being killed and being un dead; between life on earth and life
beyond it; between all time, which has no beginning and no end . . . (Morrison 1.14)
In that timelessness of afterlife, Toni Morrison allows Othello s wife Desdemona to tell the
stories that William Shakespeare did not allow her to tell (Sciolino). Desdemona is a collaboration
between writer Toni Morrison, musician Rokia TraorГ© and director Peter Sellars. It retells the
story of William Shakespeare s Othello and, thus, serves a prequel and sequel to the tragedy
(Carney 1). Toni Morrison s play examines Desdemona s relationship with her husband Othello as
well as with other female characters, in particular, Desdemona s relationship with her nurse Barbary
(Erickson 3 4). Furthermore, the drama introduces the social conflicts the women come into contact
with which are based on gender and ethnicity. An analysis of Toni Morrison s Desdemona shows
the social construction of the division of the sexes as well as the division of ethnicities. This
division is known as Otherness:
The idea of Otherness relates to the construction of majority and minority identities ... Show more

In fact, man is seen as the universal norm whereas woman is defined and differentiated with
reference to man (ibid.). Thus, man is defined as the One which entails the submission of woman
as the Other (xxiv). This submission, however, is a result of natural condition rather than
historical events or social change (xxiv xxv). Moreover, it is due to the fact that woman do not
form an independent unit as they do not have a past or history of their own which differentiates
them from men. Hence, woman is the Other in a duality in which both elements man and woman
are essential, as the division of the sexes is a biological fact not a historical event

Research Paper On The Titanic s Maiden Voyage
The Titanic s maiden voyage was a disaster because of the way the ship was designed. California

According to a study in 2011 by Pennsylvania State University, 7.6 percent of the general
population has problems with sleep paralysis. The trouble is that sleep paralysis can be
dismissed as no more than a vivid nightmare. Studies have proven that sleep paralysis can happen
to anyone and indeed will at some point in their life; however, it is possible that an episode can
go unnoticed. Sleep paralysis occurs at one of two times: Hypnagogic sleep paralysis occurs as
one falls asleep. Hypnopompic sleep paralysis occurs as one awakes from sleep. In both cases, it
is believed to be a result of disrupted REM sleep which routinely induces complete muscle
atonia, relaxing and easing the body into a state of voluntary paralysis. This is to prevent sleepers
from acting out their dreams, potentially harming themselves in the process. REM sleep
disruption insists that the sleeper is having troubling transitioning into various stages of sleep, like
a computer failing to process data. Scientists have yet to uncover any empirical evidence that
could explain this faulty transition. The paralysis remains, yet the mind is aware. This might
explain why many who have experienced this phenomenon feel as though they have woken up in
a coffin or grave. Michael Breus, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and fellow at the American
Academy of Sleep Medicine helps elaborate: Most patients say the same thing to describe sleep
paralysis: that it feels like you woke up dead. You know

Strengths Of The Immune System And Ayurveda
Immune system and Ayurveda
What is Immune system:
The immune system is made up of a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to
protect the body. One of the important cells involved are white blood cells, also called leukocytes,
which come in two basic types that combine to seek out and destroy disease causing organisms or
substances.
What cause immune system to weaken:
Anything that weakens your immune system can lead to a secondary immunodeficiency disorder.
Low consumption of protein in your diet can weaken your immune system. Your body also
produces proteins when you sleep that help your body fight infection. For this reason, lack of sleep
reduces your immune defenses. There are several other factors too which cause the weakness of
immune system.
How to Boost Immune system with Ayurveda:
If our Immune system is weak, that means our defense system is low and can result in several
kind of illness such as Fever, Flu and fatigue. It is very important to enhance your immune system

Iago Speech In Othello

Is it such a crime to be an honest and good man? Imagine if you believed the wife of your closest
friend was cheating on him? Would you just let him go about his life whilst his wife was in bed
with another man? Well I ll tell you now, if that s what you would do, you re no friend. You
might as well be the man she was cheating with. What if your friend was going to commit suicide
would you not do everything you could to stop him? How about if your friend lost his job and you
knew how he could get it back, would you not help him? I m brought before the senate today,
charged with doing nothing but retaining as my title as Honest Iago and staying loyal to my
comrades. So I ask you, do you really believe I should be punished for being an honest man who
simply cares for his friends when they are in need?
Whilst in Venice, I learned that my dear friend Roderigo had fallen for Desdemona. When he
discovered she had married our noble General, Othello, he was filled with grief and was clearly
distraught after Desdemona confirmed she had married Othello. After the noble men had finished
their the meeting over the war in cypress, Rodrigo approached me. I could sense something wasn
t right, the tone of his voice, the expression upon his face, it was terrifying! Under pressure, I kept
my thoughts together and remained calm. Roderigo asked me what he should do. Confused, I told
him to go home and rest, for the trip to Cypress would be long and tiring. However in an emotional
outburst, he told me that he was going to go drown himself (1:3:301), I was taken by surprise, I
acted quickly, attempting to dispel any thought in his mind about this ridiculous idea. After a long
period of discussion, I persuaded him that he was being irrational and should go home and
prepare for the trip to Cypress instead. I had also replaced the idea of him drowning himself
with the hope of winning Desdemona s heart by putting money (1:3:330) towards his endeavours.
If I were such an evil person as these charges suggest I am, why would I support him in his time
of need. What else would I get out of this other than knowing I saved my dear friends life.

The Characters Of The Pardoner From The Canterbury TalesBy...
In the medieval church, a pardoner was a clergy member who had the authority from the pope to
grant indulgences to people who showed great charity. Pardoners were originally called questors
who gained the named Pardoner for their ability to pardon people of their sins(The Role of the
Pardoner). A pardoner usually worked under the authority of a Bishop. There is a great deal of
evidence that many pardoners were fraudulent, and also saw their role as an opportunity to take
thieve money from the poor and helpless. All a Pardoner needed to sell indulgences was a fine
looking array of letters along with positive manner in making the appeal to scheme commoners of
their money(The Role of the Pardoner). Pardoners also sold holy relics which were artefacts
claimed to be bones, body parts, scraps of clothing, or personal belongings of saints which held
powers unknown to man. Geoffrey Chaucers Pardoner from The Canterbury Talesshows similar
characteristics and traits to ones of the medieval time period. Chaucer s Pardoner from The
Canterbury Tales falls directly under the category of being corrupt and unethical for he uses false
certificates and relics to extort money for himself; therefore, he is criticizing the corruption of the
church. The Pardoner s Prologue begins with the Pardoner explaining to the pilgrims about

Conflict In Lord Of The Flies Essay
War is the state of conflict and competition between opposing forces. Nonetheless, war can be
caused through emotional and psychological issues through two sides that obtain power from
the support of influential followers. William Golding exhibits this perception in the novel, Lord
of the Flies as a plane carrying a group of British schoolboys is shot down over the Pacific during
a combat warfare in Europe. In the midst of consternation and chaos, Ralph, one of the many
young boys on the plane, is able to distinguish the fear among the boys and use them as a barrier
to survival. Ralph s leadership is visible from the beginning as he is elected leader of the boys,
on the other hand, Jack is cheated out of becoming the leader as he resembles a militaristic
attitude who is greedy to make rules and discipline anyone for breaking his rules. A component of
the novel consists of Ralph and Jack struggling to invest in each others distinct power leading to the
boys descending into savagery and the loss of civilization during the events of the atomic war.

The Corruption Of India And The Problem Of Abortion In India
All around the world, an abortion is a very controversial topic and is talked about immensely. In
America, when you hear people talk about an abortion, you hear them make a big deal about it. On
the other hand, within the Hindu religion in India, that is a different story. The first problem that
arises with regard to an abortionin India is how differently Hinduwomen are treated in comparison
to Hindu men. As a whole, the government of India is trying to control the people and the
population of the country by controlling the female to male sex ratios. As stated in the article
Sexuality, caste, governmentality: contests over genderin India by Nivedita Menon, the government
is trying to cut down the population for the development of the country. As they are trying to do
this, they are diminishing women and the rights that they have. The concern that the government
should have should not mainly be what the women and their bodies and the lives that they live,
but woman as key to the stability and reproduction of society and the patriarchal family. As
stated in the article, the population rise might not be a problem caused by women. It might not
be a female problem because the sex ratio was at an all time low for women as the ratio was 933
females per 1000 men in the 2001 census. One of the main reasons that the sex ratio for women
has gone down is because of the widely practiced selective abortion of female foetuses.
Secondly, some people might be wondering what an

Samuel Mongeau Eel Lecture Summary
Guest Lecture Analysis: Eels by Samuel Mongeau
Samuel Mongeau s informative lecture about eels covered topics of the benefits and usage of eels
in Canadian society during the 16th century. Furthermore, Mongeau presents his lecture with a
personal but wide viewpoint on the significance of eels to Canadian history.
To begin, Mongeau acknowledges the limited research on eels as they are simultaneously dying
rapidly, with a 97% decline in the eel population since 1980. However, in the 16th century, there
was an abundance of eels in which they served multiple purposes, yet historical documents failed
to take note of these eels, for the primary focus was mainly on the fur trade. Nevertheless, eels
served to be a main survival food for the Indigenous peoples. Eels were incredibly populous along
the St. Lawrence river and they migrated seasonally during the winter months. This was optimal for
survival purposes because eels are high in fat and they were not a scarce resource at the time.
Additionally, the large population of eels helped to boost the national economy as it created an
internal and external market in Canada. In turn, this promoted the development of social institutions
as the growing economy could now afford to invest in such establishments. On the other hand,
during the creation of New France 2.0, Canada s economy substituted fur and eel trades with cod
fish for they were more profitable and valuable. This had progressed Canada into a more modern

The Role Of Cultural Diversity On The Identity Of The...
No matter where people come from they all have a different story or a background that makes

Holt s Case Study
2. How does the class s average TRC for each gender compare with Holt s (1952) data? The average
number of TRC for males in my class is around 129, for female it is 102. For Holt s data the
average for males is around 200 and for females is slightly under 200. It s a difference in
numbers, but in every other detail it is fairly similar. 3. How does your personal TRC compare

However, Holt separated the females and males, Holt also determined exactly which finger was

In what ways does Mendelian genetics differ from polygenic inheritance? Mendelian genetics
differs from polygenic inheritance because one trait is controlled by one gene in specific. There
is also a dominant and a recessive. In polygenic inheritance one trait may be controlled by two or
more genes. 6. In what ways are the two models of inheritance the same? The many genes that
are controlling a polygenic trait are all inherited by Mendelian genetics. While the genes
individually contain Mendelian inheritance, the trait itself does not because a vast amount of
genes are involved in making it specific. 7. Unfortunately, the П‡2 test is mathematically
unsuitable for use with averages. What statistical test could we use to determine if our average

Analysis Of 911 By Michael Burke
Hero. A word that has 7.442 billion different definitions and or examples. An author named
Michael Burke; a writer for the Wall Street Journal, writes to persuade wealthy people who have
a strong influence on the daily world to recognize a problem that happens yearly on a single
date.9/11. First responders or better known as the heros of 9/11 were sent to a different location to
watch their own ceremony at ground zero, all while congressmen sit and take their seats at the real
ceremony. This all arises due to the upcoming 10th anniversary of 9/11. He builds his argument
through the use of organization and pathos.
First and foremost, it was thought that Mr. Burke would never get his his point across. This is
what makes his organization so important. Burke drags his thesis out to three quarter of the
article at a point which he switch his focus to the real point at hand. For weeks ordinary New
Yorkers and visitors from out of town attended there hundreds of memorial services across the
city and area suburbs... Fifth Avenue New York s main street came to a halt Right after the
horrific event people everywhere were mourning the loss of thousands including the lives of first
responders. This quote or changing point marks the start of the real point of the article. To this day
it should be assumed that they would be honored at ground zero at a memorial yearly to thank them
for their sacrifices and thank the families of the ones who made the ultimate sacrifice. But as Burke

Identity Should Form a Part of Any Pedagogical Theory and...
Introduction My discovering my own identity doesn t mean that I work it out in isolation, but that
I negotiate it through dialogue, partly overt, partly internal, with others...My own identity
crucially depends on my dialogical relations with others (Taylor, 1995, as cited in Abbey, 2000).
If dialogical relations form the basis of how we understand ourselves in the world, it figures is
should also form a part of any pedagogical theory and practice. While this is not the only
consideration for a teacher, it provides a centre from which a number of useful educative
considerations can be made. Firstly: students come with identities that are informed by many
dialogical relations and that they learn by being in social communities. Secondly:... Show more

Through active engagement with students, teachers assess students competencies and continually
adjust the guidance and learning support as necessary (O Donnell, 2012, p. 114). This is where
Vygotsky s zone of proximal development (ZPD) becomes a valuable theoretical tool. The ZPD is
the distance between the actual developmental level , as specified by autonomous problem solving,
and the level of possible development determined via problem solving in collaboration with more
capable peers (Schunk, 2012, p. 243). According to Vygotsky, the ZPD is critical to teaching for it
is where cognitive development occurs (O Donnell, 2012, p. 114). Teaching in the ZPD requires the
teacher and student to share cultural tools. However, students do not passively receive cultural
knowledge from these mediated interactions (Schunk, 2012). Students come to the exchange with
their own understandings to social interactions and construct meanings by integrating those
understandings with their experiences in the context (Schunk, 2012, p. 244). The ZPD very clearly
establishes learning as a moment situated in a social exchange. It also establishes the role of the
teacher as not only guide, but as assessor of the ZPD. This requires constant dialectic engagement
on the teachers behalf. Perhaps what is missing in terms of a constructivist approach in Jane s class
is that while she does offer the students an opportunity to chose their

Diesel vs Gas Essay
Gasoline vs. Diesel
You re in the market for a new truck; you have an idea about what you want but not quite sure if
you want a gasoline or a diesel engine. Well, gas and diesel engines are very similar yet different in
quite a few ways.
At first glance, someone who doesn t know much about either of the two engines might ask, What s
the difference? To the untrained eye they might look exactly alike, but don t judge the engine by its
exterior look.
Gas engines are mainly used by the individual in personal vehicles whereas diesels are very
popular in the commercial and industrial fields. Diesel engines are used by the navy in their ships
and by the army in their tanks and big trucks. Some of the main reasons for choosing this engine are

The continuing rotation of the crankshaft drives the piston back up, ready for the next cycle. The
piston moves in a reciprocating motion, which is converted into circular motion of the crankshaft,
which ultimately propels the car. Gas engines usually have about the same about of horsepower as
they do torque. The diesel engine usually has twice as much torque as it does horsepower, thus it is
the better hill climber and load carrier.
As you might have noticed, diesel engines have a harder time starting in cold weather compared to
gas engines due to the fact that gas engines have an electrical started system. Gas engines rely on
fuel, air and spark to ignite whereas diesel engines rely on heat and compression to initiate
spontaneous combustion.
Some of the more obvious differences are the prices for fuel. As of now, March 2011, the price for
diesel is significantly higher than gas. Gas is approaching the range of $3.40 per gallon to
$3.70 per gallon (depending on what part of the country you re in, it could be higher than that).
Diesel, on the other hand, is nearing $4.00 per gallon and quickly rising. I remember 7 or 8 years
ago when diesel was cheaper than gas, and gas was just above $1.00 per gallon.
Overall, I would say the diesel engine is the better of the two. Of course it all depends on the
usage and perhaps the price of the vehicle but overall the diesel engine is more rugged and reliable,
long lasting, stronger, more efficient and requires less

Rural Urban Environment Essay
Transition from Rural to Urban Environments
Humans once lived in the natural world, as other wild animals continue to do, but with the
evolution of civilization came urbanization. The United Nations reports that In the middle of the
20th century, 30 percent of people resided in urban areas. Today, over half of the world s
population lives in urban environments, and this figure is expected to increase anywhere from ten
to twenty percent in the next few decades (United Nations). Europe and the Americas are the most
highly urbanized places, but countries in all parts of the world are urbanizing at increasing rates
(United Nations). The rise of people living in urban areas will add 2. 5 billion people to the
population by 2050, which will further increase the demand for urbanization (United Nations).
Meanwhile, less people are living in rural environments (United Nations). The rate of rural
population growth has decreased since the 1950s, and it is projected that the number of people
living in rural areas will drop from the current 3. 4 billion to 3. 2 billion by 2050 (United Nations).
Changes in living environments consequently brought about changes in lifestyle. Richard Louv
recalls that the middle of the last century saw a huge migration of Americans to suburban
neighborhoods, areas that fall in between the categorizations for rural and urban. (2008). While the
concept of suburbia implies less urbanicity than cities, today s suburbs are vastly different from the

What Were The Consequences That Erupted After The Pact...
Introduction What were the consequences that erupted after the pact between Hitler and Stalin?
The results of the pacts between Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin were betrayals and battles, which
changed the course of the war. If not for the striking similarities between the two dictators, which
led to their downfall, the Axis, Germany, Italy and Japan, would have had the opportunity to win
the largest war in recent history; however, due to the occurrence of the betrayal on Hitler s behalf,
the war was turned in favor of the Allies, Great Britain, France and later on the Soviet Union..
Pacts
The first pact written was referred to as the Nazi Soviet Pact. The pact caught many off guard due
to the fact that fascism was the style of government running Germany, while Russia had a
communist form of government. The document had been written at the beginning of the war,
August 22, 1939. The signing of the document was the signal that the war was going to begin.
Negotiated by two foreign ministers, Joachim Von Ribbentrop and Vyacheslav Molotov, the
countries came to an agreement, despite the opposing ideals and goals of each country. When the
odds of the war were not in their favor, they had a change of heart and joined forces (Ross). The
leaders put their mutual hatred and distrust for one another aside in order to form a mutually
beneficial relationship between the countries. The Nazi Soviet Pact addressed the course of action
each country would take concerning Poland. Hitler

The Kikuyu Conforming to Christianity
Jomo Kenyatta s ethnography, Facing Mt. Kenya was written in the 1930 s about Kikuyu society
during 1890 1910, the early years of British colonialism in Kenya. Since the coming of the early
colonization the Kikuyu people have tried to develop a religious attitude that would define it s own

The preconceived European ideas about the African natives were unjust and unsubstantiated. The

Missionaries tried to break up the any polygamous relationships that existed between Kikuyu men
and women without any concern to what it meant to the two sexes and the community. The need
for women to be mothers and wives was rooted deep in traditional collective beliefs. In Kikuyu
communities the raising of a family is great cause for rise in social status. The larger a mans
family the better it was for the community as a whole. This principle now being thwarted by the
white missionaries was hard on the whole family unit. Men would have to send away some of their
wives and children whom were a part of the community. Without polygamy, women would be driven
away and risk being unmarried then shunned out of the community.
The Kikuyu people tried to show the missionaries that the bible itself had polygamy prevalent
throughout and that some of the most religious men had several wives. Kikuyu men even tried to
take on name of biblical men who practiced polygamy to help prove themselves in front of God
and the missionaries. To the dismay of the clan these attempts to prove that polygamy was just,
were ultimately ignored and thrown out by the missionaries. In order to keep their cultural and

The Effects Of Homelessness On The City
Introduction As the winter approaches we are forced to remember the severity of homelessness
in the City. As of 2014, based on data provided by the Coalition for the Homeless, there are
59,246 people sleeping in shelters. It costs the City $3,500 a month to house a homeless person,
adding up to $856 million a year. There are thousands more who sleep on the streets, but due to
lack of data we are not sure of the exact number. Shelters only provide a temporary solution; on
average a person is allowed to stay in a shelter for a maximum of 180 days. How can that individual
/family regain their self sufficiency in a city where the rent is amongst the highest in the country,
and affordable housingis limited. Nearly half of all New York Cityresidents pay more than 30
percent of their income on housing. Median rents have risen 75 percent since 2000, at the same
time, that median incomes have declined, and between 1994 and 2012, the city lost 105,242 of
rent regulated housing. To address this problem, and restore these people sense of citizenship, we
need a citywide reform of the housing system.
Since housing conditions vary significantly from state to state, it is important for state and
localities to develop their own housing strategies. The two basic components that affect housing in
New york, which need to be addressed to reform the affordable housing system are 1) many
families have incomes that are too low to afford the costs to maintain a home 2) constraints on the

The Creation Of The Jewish State As Part Of Palestine
Israel is a small country in southwestern Asia that was founded in 1948 as a sanctuary for Jews
from all parts of the world. Israel lies along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea and is
bordered by Syria and Lebanon to the north, Egypt to the southwest, and Jordan to the east.
Jerusalem is the capitol and the largest city in Israel. It is considered by many faiths to be the
holiest city in the world. A lot of people think that United Nations were the one who gave birth to
Israel, however in reality the United Nations General Assembly recommended the creation of the
Jewish state as part of Palestine. Many events in the Jewish history gave purpose to create Israel.

The site of Caesarea Maritima contains many unique challenges for archaeological excavations. In
spite of this, through pottery analysis, archaeologists are able to learn about different aspects of the

archaeologists. Not only does it cover a significant section of the coastal region, but the immense
harbour, over time, has been completely submerged in the sea. Along with geographical challenges,
there are also historical ones. The site of Caesarea Maritima was inhabited from Hellenistic time

At the site of Tell el Hesi, Petrie noticed specific styles of pottery at different stages of the dig
(Petrie 1890). By a comparison of the different pottery forms with similar pieces dated from
previous sites, Petrie was able to date the surrounding material through the pottery. Significantly, by
studying the pottery forms, Petrie created an association between specific dates and forms of
pottery (Petrie 1891) thus created a chronology which revolutionised the archaeology of the Levant.
To give an illustration of the impact which Petrie s discovery has had upon archaeology in the
Levant, his chronology has been used on archaeological sites in the region throughout the past
century (Cole 1984; Tushingham 1986). In Caesarea Maritima Petrie s discovery of dating a site
through the pottery has assisted with dating both the city and the harbour of Sebastos. In the
harbour, the discovery of pottery was interpreted as evidence that the city was importing goods
via sea trade, during the 3rd century AD (Hohlfelder 1988). While excavating Caesarea Maritima
the Department of Antiquities in Israel discovered that an area they were excavating was
abandoned during the Arab conquest (Yeivin 1955, p. 123). Yet, because there was evidence of
pottery from the eighth and ninth centuries in addition to some lamps, it was evidence that after
the site had been abandoned it was resettled. Because of the discovery of Mameluke pottery, it
became apparent that the site was superceded during the Crusader period (Yeivin 1955, p. 123).
Petrie s discovery of the association between pottery and dating, therefore, has assisted in the
archaeology of Caesarea

Clarissa Harlow, American Red Cross, Educator And Nurse
Clarissa Harlow Clara Barton was founder of American Red Cross, educator and nurse. She was
born in Oxford, Massachusetts on December 25, 1821. She spent much of her time helping
others, such as tending to her brother after he was involved in an accident. At the age of 15 she
became a schoolteacher and later went to open a free public school in New Jersey. She later
became a clerk in the U.S. Patent Office in 1854 but lost the job two years later when the
Democrats won the presidency. Throughout her life she was a teacher and helped people
whenever the opportunity appeared. From 1861 1865 the Civil War had taken place in the

not to only help those that were sick or injured but keep the others healthy enough to fight.
Clarissa Barton was one of those women who signed up as a nurse during the Civil War. At first
she collected and distributed supplies and meals for the Union Army. She quickly got tired of just

Benefactors In Great Expectations
Benefactors
In the British classic Great Expectations, Charles Dickens uses a pair of benefactors who greatly
contrast each other to represent the dual social mindsets of society. Elusive convict Abel Magwitch
appears hostile to readers in the beginning of the story, but he later reveals himself as a selfless
laborer, working vigorously to finance young Pip s journey into becoming a gentleman. In contrast,
Miss Havisham is a venerable old woman who was jilted on her wedding day and raises her
adopted daughter to break the heart of adolescent Pip using her beauty. Dickens uses both of these
wealthy donors to display different aspects of morality, life experiences, and individual personality.

Miss Havisham also displays some gratitude towards Pip during his visits, saying, Thank you.
Thank you [for coming] most times he arrives a the Satis house. However, while Miss Havisham
may have truly been grateful for Pip s presence occasionally, most of these greetings are
suggested to not be sincere. This lack of sincerity proves that Miss Havisham thinks she is
socially above Pip and confirms the fact that she is unappreciative and her morals are corrupted.
Magwitch s good morals prove to lead him to a satisfying life while even though Miss Havisham
starts to show signs of reformation near her demise, her morally defunct lifestyle causes her to die
heartbroken, regretful, and lonely.
The second way the benefactors differ is through there past life experiences. Because Magwitch
was In jail and out of jail all his life, he learned to make the most of life and not dwell on things
of the past (295). Doing this made him a successful businessman and also strengthened his
character. Contradicting to this, Miss Havisham secludes herself from the world after her
fiancГ© most heartlessly broke the marriage off on their wedding day (153). Dwelling on this
event for the rest of her life, Miss Havisham loses the determination to do anything but make Pip
s life miserable. She accomplishes this by pushing Pip to pursue Estella, saying If she favors you,

Spiegelman helped portray Vladek s experience with diagrams of the camps, crematorium plans,
an actual photo of Vladek and a manual for repairing shoes. By using these visual aids in the
novel, it helped the reader to have a better historical understanding of the context and a face to
his father s name. It also assisted the reader in imagining a setting where this all took place. For
example, in chapter two, page 60 we see the diagram of Vladek explaining to the readers how he
fixed boots and considered himself a shoemaker. Here we can see the quick thinking that he used
to get himself out a situation that could have turned sour for the most part. He used his
judgement and resourcefulness to assist him against the German soldiers and turned himself
into an asset for them. On page 61 on the bottom right corner we see how his talents in repairing
shoes also rewarded him with food. On page 64 in the top middle panel, shows us the diagram of
what types of things Vladek would save to trade for food or vodka. He explains to Art that he
would save his cigarettes to trade for one portion of day s bread in order to send it to his mother
Anja to keep her alive. Vladek also worked with a number of his fellow Jews in order to survive.
Without the support of each other, very few wouldn t have endured Auschwitz and the holocaust. In
chapter three, page 86 we are shown the Jews packed into a

Essay on Understanding Phenomenology of Smoking
There has been a great increase in the number of deaths due to smoking. Headlines such as
Second hand smoke kills 600,000 worldwide annually (Falco, 2010) highlights that there s a
major problem. My question is, why are people still smoking? It should be a wake up call for
those who smoke but even with the hard facts presented, people still decide to smoke. As a
psychology student, I was interested in exploring the phenomenology of smokingwanted to address
this matter further. To do this, I designed an interview schedule from which I have gained an
individual s emotion as well as perception towards smoking. Before I could do this I had to,
myself, understand what an interview is how I could professionally interview an individual... Show

While I was interviewing, I had realised that my interviewee tried to make me understand that no
matter how bad smoking is how much it affects her health wise, she will not stop unless there s a
specific health problem where she will be forced to stop smoking. This made me question whether
will power exists.
As any method of research, there are strengths and limitations. This particular method can
produce qualitative data and therefore a strength is that it s packed with in depth and rich
information that can be analysed. Furthermore, thoughts and feelings can be deeply explored as
one s view can be explained rather than rated on a number which may mean something different
to each individual. As well as a strength, this is also a weakness. From rich and detailed data case
studies are created due to the uniqueness of each individual. This mean that we cannot apply one
s data to everyone else. In other words, we cannot generalise the data to the rest of population as
there are individual differences that need to be taken into consideration. Another weakness with
interviews is that it s hard to analyse and draw conclusions from as the interviewer is bombarded
with information that will take time to understand to be able to conclude. With this said, the
responses from the interviewee are open to researcher bias due to the interpretation of data. I
myself have been a victim of this as I chose to interview a

Theme Of Courage In To Kill A Mockingbird
Bravery, showing mental or moral strength to face danger, is a crucial word in To Kill A
Mockingbird. This book takes place in the South during the 1930 s, a time of prejudice and
racism. At this time, one was ridiculed if one s beliefs were not the same as the traditional beliefs
of the town. Bravery is vital to go against society. Courage is a major theme in Harper Lee s, To
Kill A Mockingbird, and is demonstrated throughout the book by Mrs.Dubose, Boo Radley, and
Atticus. Courage is a major theme that is demonstrated throughout the book by Mrs.Dubose.
She was fighting a losing battle up until her final breaths. She was determined to die free of
everything and she was brave enough to keep fighting. Mrs.Dubose displayed true courage as
shown in the quote, ...I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that
courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It s when you know you re licked before you begin
anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.
Mrs.Dubose won... (128). In a way, Mrs.Dubose stood up for her belief and will to die free.
When most would have given up, or been too fearful, Mrs.Dubose marched on. Although she
seemed inconsiderate and insulting, there was still some good in her. Under all of her bad
qualities and insults, in the end, her bravery shined through. She stayed true to her word as shown
in the quote, ... She said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that s what she did
(127). Mrs.Dubose was a character who exhibited true courage until the end.
Another character who demonstrates courage is Atticus. He displays bravery when he shot Tim
Johnson, and when he accepted Tom Robinson s case. When the whole town was hiding in their
houses, Atticus stepped up to the task of killing Tim Johnson. Several things could have gone
astray, as shown in the quote, Miss and you ll go straight into the Radley house! (110). Despite the
consequences of missing, Atticus rose to the challenge. While everyone waited for Tim Johnson to
pass, Atticus was courageous enough to walk outside and shoot Tim. He knew his responsibility to
the town and instead of cowering behind the safety of his house, he faced Tim Johnson head on.

Muscular Dystrophy Is Not A Disease
Muscular dystrophy is not a disease; it s a term for a genetic mutation. The disease, mostly
affecting males, is transmitted as a sex linked recessive trait (Taber s Cylopedic Medical
Dictionary, 2013 pg. 736). There are 9 different types of muscular dystrophy. The two most
common types of muscular dystrophy are Duchenne and Becker. MD is a progressive degeneration
of skeletal muscles from an as yet unknown biochemical defect within the muscle(Sommers, 2011
pg. 691).
Males are affected way more often than females because the mutation of the gene occurs on the X
chromosome. Since males only have one X chromosome if that chromosome is mutated then the
signs and symptoms of muscular dystrophy show up and because females have two X ... Show more

The two most common types of muscular dystrophy, Duchenne and Becker, affect 1 in 3,500 to
5,000 males that are born in the world (Genetics Home Reference, 2012). Just in the United
States alone, over 400 males are born with one of these types of muscular dystrophy each year
(Genetics Home Reference, 2012). The life expectancy for Duchenne MD is about 20 25 years
old. In Becker MD the life expectancy is in middle adulthood. Most males lose the ability to
walk at the age of 12 with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. They then fully rely on a wheelchair to
get them anywhere. In Becker muscular dystrophy some are still walking at the age of 30. It just
depends on how early the muscular dystrophy is found because depending upon when it s
detected determines what form of muscular dystrophy the patient has. Families may start noticing
signs and symptoms of Duchenne MD between the ages of 2 and 6. With Becker muscular
dystrophy signs are not noticed until late childhood or early adolescence. Sons of female carriers
of a mutated dystrophin gene have a 50% chance of having DMD or BMD (Richman Schub, 2013).
No specific race or ethnic group is more affected by muscular dystrophy more than another. The
patient has a better chance of getting pneumonia or other pulmonary disorders and other risk factors
include cardiac dysrhythmias and hypertrophy (Sommers, 2011).
Muscular dystrophy is a disease in which muscles become weak over time due to muscular atrophy.

Starbucks s Mission Statement Of Starbucks
Starbucks All around the globe people have either purchased a coffee or have heard of the coffee
chain Starbucks. As the #1 coffee house chain in the world, with just over 19,700 stores, Starbucks
has managed to stay at the top of their game with reinventing themselves and how they do business.
Whether that is due to the change in leadership, structure or cultural change, this chain has
surpassed the market place by overpowering the second place Dunkin Donuts by almost 8,000
stores worldwide. Nothing seems to slow down this powerhouse and they have the numbers to
prove just that. The company has spent decades growing only the best for their franchise. Starbucks
has included Our mission: to inspire and nurture the human spirit one person, one cup and one
neighborhood at a time (Jurevivius, Mission Statement of Starbucks ). How is it that one chain can
take the world by storm? Within every company, there is always a need for a multitude of structures
such as organization and control. Without defining how the company will run and who will run
each portion, this global giant could crash. The structures contain everyone within Starbucks from
the individual branch employees and supervisors to the presidents and CEO. Each team member
has an important role and should take that role with respect and passion. Each structure set forth

The Irish Easter Rebellion 1916 Essay
The 1916 Irish Easter Uprising
Ever since the occupation of Ireland by the English began in 1169, Irish patriots have fought back
against British rule, and the many Irish rebellions and civil wars had always been defeated. To
quash further rebellion, the Act of Union was imposed in 1800, tying Ireland to the United Kingdom
of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Laws discriminating against Catholics and the handling of
the Irish Potato Famine of 1845 50 led to increased tension and the proposal of introducing Home
Rule gained support.
In 1913 there was a general strike of workers in Dublin led by James Connolly of the Irish
Transport and General Workers Union (I.T.G.W.U.). This action was followed by the 1913 Lock

It was a call for a blood sacrifice in order to free Ireland from British rule. In organising an
uprising, the funeral was proof that the Volunteers could organise when secretly directed by the
I.R.B. and on St. Patrick s Day (17th March), Connolly took his Citizen Army on a tour of key
Dublin sites which could be used as strategic strongholds during an uprising.
However, there were many difficulties in organising and executing such a rebellion and one thing
the rebels needed were weapons. Sir Roger Casement had organised for a shipment of as many as
200,000 rifles to be smuggled into Ireland on a neutral German freighter, the Aud. But when
Casement arrived in Ireland on a German submarine he was arrested immediately and the freighter
was intercepted by the Royal Navy and scuttled itself. Another attempt was made to gain large
quantities of arms and ammunition during the actual uprising from the arsenal at Phoenix Park
known as Magazine Fort. However this was not very successful and the rebels seized only a few
rifles.
Throughout the organisation of the rebellion, Eoin MacNeill, leader of the minority Volunteers had
to be kept in the dark about the I.R.B. s plans because he believed that his Irish Volunteersshould

The Story Of A Woman Essay
A woman is standing in her kitchen, cooking dinner for her husband and her three children. She
has many things on her mind other than food: her children, her health, her life. During her
distraction, the bread that she had put in the oven to toast begins to burn and it smells of smoke
in the kitchen. She desperately pulls the pan out of the oven and begins to fan the bread, hoping
that her husband in the living room does not smell it. Her husband enters the kitchen, smells the
remnants of the smoke, and walks slowly over to her. She uses her body to shield the seared
bread while realizing that the relief she just felt is gone. Her husband asks what happened and
she opens her mouth to answer...when he smacks her across the face. Can you ever do anything
right?! he yells. The children glance in through the open door, then scatter when they see their
mom s wide eyed expression. The bruise begins to form already and the scar tissue around her
broken heart opens back up again. This, unfortunately, is a reality for many women around the
world, especially in the United States. They live in fear every day, wondering if today is the day
that their spouse will end their lives. Others endure endless verbal abuse, killing their self esteem
and their will to live. Domestic violenceis an epidemic that is on the rise around the world. We must
come together and propose a solution to help women feel safe and secure in their homes and in
their relationships. Per the National Coalition

The Negative Effects Of Indirect Lobbying
Introduction: Lobbying of United States politicians has been a thing in the country for years, often
helping businesses and corporations as well as citizens, directly or indirectly. But, as consumerism
increased in the recent years, so has the negative effects of lobbying towards citizens because of
businesses and corporations. Lobbyinghas caused a large one sided gap in how politicians use their
votes on laws, as shown, The National Rifle Association and other gun rights organizations spent
nearly $55 million in the 2016 election cycle to oppose or support candidates through independent
spending nearly 19 times the amount spent by groups promoting gun restrictions, according to a
tally be the nonpartisan Center for Responsive... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The comparison of a savings, investments, and lobbying is shown by comparing sizes of each
object is in the yellow box sizes, as well as actual percentages. Lobbying is the ultimate
investment for companies due to how much the return value is because of the certain law being
passed, or repealed, as well as how consumers will react, for example, the amount of gun owners
and NRA memberships increased after President Trump repealed ex President Obama s mental
health check law.
Compromise
Since lobbying is such a beneficial thing to the United States, a compromise on how lobbying
should be dealt with needs to be made, in a fair manner, that can and might make lobbying less
competitive and lower costing. All lobbying donations and contributions should be made public.
The records should be public, so the citizens of the United States can be aware of how much
inflation and competition there is in the lobbying market. Making lobbying records public will
also discourage some companies in supporting certain things, due to the image that would be
established, such as ruining the good image of the company to make more profit. Lobbying
donations directly to politicians are not taxed at all, if not at a really low rate, and should be
taxed just as much as one s salary, especially since the money received is due to the politician s
job. This will often bump up certain politicians into

The Theory Of Attachment Theory
There are a lot of close relationship theory that are studied in social psychology but one of the main
theory is attachment theory. This theory not only provides a framework for understanding
emotional reactions in infants but also in love, loneliness, and grief in adults. In adults there are
attachment styles that are a type of working model that explains certain behaviors that are
developed at infancy and childhood. An infant requires two basic attitudes during their earliest
interactions with adults. The first is an attitude about their self esteem that drives from their own
perspective of their self. The behavioral and emotional reactions of their caregiver gives
information to the infant that they are loved, cared for, important, or on the other end they are
unloved, not valued, and on important. The second is how infant s attitudes form other people,
experiences and their beliefs. The term interpersonal trust becomes very important in order to feel
like their caregiver is perceived reliable or trustworthy. It is significant that these basic attitudes are
acquired before a baby develops there language skills. Attachment theoryis a positive emotional
bond that develops between a child and a caregiver. When an infant develops affection to their
mother only because they are the ones who provide food which is a reinforcement. Although
attachment theory is more than just nourishment. ( cont)

  • 2. The Tempest By William Shakespeare And Mama Day By Gloria... The Tempest by William Shakespeare and Mama Day by Gloria Naylor are two fantastic stories that both belong to the genre magical realism, which is where magical elements are incorporated into realistic fiction. Prospero the main character is robbed of Dukedom and marooned on an island with his infant daughter where he meets natives and fire demons who do his bidding. Mama Day the main character in Gloria Naylors novel is a no nonsense woman who uses her magic to help the other residents of their island. Even though Naylor denies that Mama Day is modern retelling of the Tempestit is hard not see that there are similarities between the stories. However, there are some differences. Prospero takes justice into his own hands, just as the characters around Mama Day take their situations into their own hands. They do not trust Mama Day s ways until they are forced to ask for her help. Whereas Prospero and Miranda might seem like parallel characters because they both use magic, Miranda knows its limits and uses it to help others, while Prospero only discovers the limits of magic after he gives it up. After breaking his staff and throwing his books into the sea, Prospero is left with little to no power of his own. It is in his last speech in the play, in the epilogue, that he realizes that his magic is nothing without outside help. He no longer has the outside power of his books and staffs to make his magic work so he is weak and vulnerable. Prospero realizes he will never get off ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Ibsen And Chekhov Anton Chekhov was so bored by Ibsen s The Wild Duck he remarked that Ibsen does not know life and that Ibsen is no dramatist It might be argued that Chekhov felt Ibsen to be in some ways, as a thinker, too like himself. Ibsen and Chekhov share a number of beliefs: individualism, sincerity, the loathsomeness of tyranny, freedom for women. Tolstoy even condemned the seagull for being like Ibsen: mere verbiage leading nowhere . But Chekhov employs a different technique to Ibsen to produce a sense of reality in The Cherry Orchard . The orchard, the obvious focal piece of the play, is to be sold a month after Madame Ravensky s arrival. Lopakhin believes that the only way the orchard estate can be saved is by chopping down the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ranyevskaya memories of the orchard as a fantastic playground disallow her to see the truth that the cherry orchard was just her parents business and it is time to change the business because times have changed. Every one of the many characters was carefully planned out to show some purpose in the message conveyed in The Cherry Orchard. Chekhov is able to show that the core of humanity is full of ludicrous emotions and ideas. The importance of the use of comedy in the play conveys with the importance of comedy in our lives. It shows the reader how the most ridiculous moments and decisions are probably the most important ones. The decisions of the characters are full of faults that posses something ludicrous in them which allows this to be considered a comedy. Both characters are made even more human , by their honorable traits, and minor disreputable qualities. Lopakhin and Madame Ravensky s characters are incompatible in the other s mind. Madame Ravensky is a member of the falling aristocracy who is a lost romantic trapped in a fantasy world on the orchard while forgetting her troubles in the real world. Contrarily, Lopakhin is money driven, sometimes vulgar, and socially rising individual. Lopakhin is trying to make a future by overcoming his past, but remains genuine and practical in his offering help. Both characters are clashing individuals, but neither are to be judged as either good or bad. There are no heroes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Science Project Synthesis Essay For this year s science project, I would like to test the effects of both mineral and commercial sunscreens on human skin and coral reefs. In current news, the island chain and United States state, Hawaii is planning on banning common sunscreens for the detrimental effects on the coral reefs. I would like to test the sunscreens for the detrimental effects on human skin as well to answer the common question, Why should I care? With this project, I will be able to educate the public on not only the effects of chemicals on marine life, but also on humans as well. Also, determine if there is a way not to wear sunscreenat all and still be protected from the sun s UV rays. In this experiment, I will be testing the effects of both chemical (commercial) sunscreens and mineral (alternative) sunscreens on human skin. Chemical and mineral sunscreen act in completely different ways. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), chemical sunscreens contain chemicals that act as endocrine disruptors, are estrogenic, and may interfere with thyroid and other hormone processes in the body. The most common chemical in these sunscreens... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The argument of Trigger Warnings being a requirement on college campuses is a big controversial debate in today s society. Trigger warnings are being debated whether it s helpful for students or it interferes with the first amendment of college professors. • 6. Explain The Panama Canal Modernization Introduction: In this assignment I will first explain the Panama Canal modernization and then I will discuss about the industry experts/forecasters prediction about its impact on east and west coast of U.S. followed by the detailed analysis to evaluate the accuracy of the prediction. Furthermore, based on the analysis, I will present my opinion for rejecting or agreeing with the forecaster s prediction of the panama canal s positive impact on intermodal traffic market share of east coast ports and west coast ports, western railroad of U.S. Overview: The Panama Canal expansion is one of the biggest developments in maritime trade in last few decades. Most businesses in the area numbered as 5, currently rely on West Coast ports to receive goods namely Los Angeles Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle, and Vancouver. After the Panama Canal expansion, shipping through the East Coast will be especially attractive to businesses that are more price sensitive and less time sensitive. Therefore, for companies in the 5th region, it will become cheaper to handle goods through East Coast ports, although doing so will add a few weeks to the total transit time but a justification for this potential switch will highly depend on a company s time preferences, price sensitivity, and costs of working capital. Thus, there is a prediction from forecasters that, that West Coast ports and western railroads would see a significant drop in intermodal traffic market share. Eastern and Southern ports and railroads, on the other hand, would see a corresponding increase. Analysis to find out accuracy of the prediction: So, after 18 months, is the prediction ... Marriage will force Marian to become a submissive wife, which is a role assigned to females by society. Causes of the Downfall of Mughal Empire CAUSES OF THE DOWNFALL OF MUGHAL EMPIRE BACKGROUND The downfall of the mughal empire can be attributed to two major factors: 1) Weaknesses of the mughals 2) Strength of the East India Company. The Mughal Empire, which had reached its zenith during the rule of Shah Jahan and his son, began to decline after the rule of Aurangzeb. In fact, the decline began during the last days of Aurangzeb. The Mughal Empire reached its greatest extent in the time of Aurangzeb Alamgir, but it collapsed with dramatic suddenness within a few decades after his death. It was this weakness that the French and the British used to their advantage, and were eventually able to establish their control over India. Rise of New Powers: New powers such as the Sikhs, Jats and Marathas came onto the scene. Gradually they broke off from the Mughal domination and established their own independent states. Foreign Invasions: The invasions of Nadir Shah and Ahmad Shah Abdali proved fatal for the Mughal Empire. Not only were the Indians defeated but their weakness was exposed and India became as easy prey to other foreign powers too.The weakened Mughal Empire invited havoc in the form of the Persian king Nadir Shah, in 1738 39. On his orders a general massacre of the citizens of Delhi was carried out, resulting in the death of 30,000 people. Another threat to the Mughal Empire came from the Afghans of Rohilkhand, lying northeast of Delhi. By the middle of 18th century, the Rohillas became independent of the Mughal rule. At the same time the Jats also raised their heads against the central rule. Punjab: Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh guru, had organized the Sikhs into a military force. • 10. An Analysis Of Toni Morrison s Desdemona 1. Introduction I exist in between, now: between being killed and being un dead; between life on earth and life beyond it; between all time, which has no beginning and no end . . . (Morrison 1.14) In that timelessness of afterlife, Toni Morrison allows Othello s wife Desdemona to tell the stories that William Shakespeare did not allow her to tell (Sciolino). Desdemona is a collaboration between writer Toni Morrison, musician Rokia TraorГ© and director Peter Sellars. It retells the story of William Shakespeare s Othello and, thus, serves a prequel and sequel to the tragedy (Carney 1). Toni Morrison s play examines Desdemona s relationship with her husband Othello as well as with other female characters, in particular, Desdemona s relationship with her nurse Barbary (Erickson 3 4). Furthermore, the drama introduces the social conflicts the women come into contact with which are based on gender and ethnicity. An analysis of Toni Morrison s Desdemona shows the social construction of the division of the sexes as well as the division of ethnicities. This division is known as Otherness: The idea of Otherness relates to the construction of majority and minority identities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, man is seen as the universal norm whereas woman is defined and differentiated with reference to man (ibid.). Thus, man is defined as the One which entails the submission of woman as the Other (xxiv). The trouble is that sleep paralysis can be dismissed as no more than a vivid nightmare. Studies have proven that sleep paralysis can happen to anyone and indeed will at some point in their life; however, it is possible that an episode can go unnoticed. Sleep paralysis occurs at one of two times: Hypnagogic sleep paralysis occurs as one falls asleep. Hypnopompic sleep paralysis occurs as one awakes from sleep. In both cases, it is believed to be a result of disrupted REM sleep which routinely induces complete muscle atonia, relaxing and easing the body into a state of voluntary paralysis. This is to prevent sleepers from acting out their dreams, potentially harming themselves in the process. REM sleep disruption insists that the sleeper is having troubling transitioning into various stages of sleep, like a computer failing to process data. Scientists have yet to uncover any empirical evidence that could explain this faulty transition. The paralysis remains, yet the mind is aware. This might explain why many who have experienced this phenomenon feel as though they have woken up in a coffin or grave. In America, when you hear people talk about an abortion, you hear them make a big deal about it. On the other hand, within the Hindu religion in India, that is a different story. The first problem that arises with regard to an abortionin India is how differently Hinduwomen are treated in comparison to Hindu men. As a whole, the government of India is trying to control the people and the population of the country by controlling the female to male sex ratios. As stated in the article Sexuality, caste, governmentality: contests over genderin India by Nivedita Menon, the government is trying to cut down the population for the development of the country. As they are trying to do this, they are diminishing women and the rights that they have. The concern that the government should have should not mainly be what the women and their bodies and the lives that they live, but woman as key to the stability and reproduction of society and the patriarchal family. As stated in the article, the population rise might not be a problem caused by women. It might not be a female problem because the sex ratio was at an all time low for women as the ratio was 933 females per 1000 men in the 2001 census. One of the main reasons that the sex ratio for women has gone down is because of the widely practiced selective abortion of female foetuses. Secondly, some people might be wondering what an ... Furthermore, Mongeau presents his lecture with a personal but wide viewpoint on the significance of eels to Canadian history. To begin, Mongeau acknowledges the limited research on eels as they are simultaneously dying rapidly, with a 97% decline in the eel population since 1980. However, in the 16th century, there was an abundance of eels in which they served multiple purposes, yet historical documents failed to take note of these eels, for the primary focus was mainly on the fur trade. Nevertheless, eels served to be a main survival food for the Indigenous peoples. Eels were incredibly populous along the St. Lawrence river and they migrated seasonally during the winter months. This was optimal for survival purposes because eels are high in fat and they were not a scarce resource at the time. Additionally, the large population of eels helped to boost the national economy as it created an internal and external market in Canada. In turn, this promoted the development of social institutions as the growing economy could now afford to invest in such establishments. On the other hand, during the creation of New France 2.0, Canada s economy substituted fur and eel trades with cod fish for they were more profitable and valuable. Through active engagement with students, teachers assess students competencies and continually adjust the guidance and learning support as necessary (O Donnell, 2012, p. 114). This is where Vygotsky s zone of proximal development (ZPD) becomes a valuable theoretical tool. The ZPD is the distance between the actual developmental level , as specified by autonomous problem solving, and the level of possible development determined via problem solving in collaboration with more capable peers (Schunk, 2012, p. 243). According to Vygotsky, the ZPD is critical to teaching for it is where cognitive development occurs (O Donnell, 2012, p. 114). Teaching in the ZPD requires the teacher and student to share cultural tools. However, students do not passively receive cultural knowledge from these mediated interactions (Schunk, 2012). Students come to the exchange with their own understandings to social interactions and construct meanings by integrating those understandings with their experiences in the context (Schunk, 2012, p. 244). The ZPD very clearly establishes learning as a moment situated in a social exchange. It also establishes the role of the teacher as not only guide, but as assessor of the ZPD. This requires constant dialectic engagement on the teachers behalf. The continuing rotation of the crankshaft drives the piston back up, ready for the next cycle. The piston moves in a reciprocating motion, which is converted into circular motion of the crankshaft, which ultimately propels the car. Gas engines usually have about the same about of horsepower as they do torque. The diesel engine usually has twice as much torque as it does horsepower, thus it is the better hill climber and load carrier. As you might have noticed, diesel engines have a harder time starting in cold weather compared to gas engines due to the fact that gas engines have an electrical started system. Gas engines rely on fuel, air and spark to ignite whereas diesel engines rely on heat and compression to initiate spontaneous combustion. Some of the more obvious differences are the prices for fuel. As of now, March 2011, the price for diesel is significantly higher than gas. Gas is approaching the range of $3.40 per gallon to $3.70 per gallon (depending on what part of the country you re in, it could be higher than that). Rural Urban Environment Essay Transition from Rural to Urban Environments Humans once lived in the natural world, as other wild animals continue to do, but with the evolution of civilization came urbanization. The United Nations reports that In the middle of the 20th century, 30 percent of people resided in urban areas. Today, over half of the world s population lives in urban environments, and this figure is expected to increase anywhere from ten to twenty percent in the next few decades (United Nations). If not for the striking similarities between the two dictators, which led to their downfall, the Axis, Germany, Italy and Japan, would have had the opportunity to win the largest war in recent history; however, due to the occurrence of the betrayal on Hitler s behalf, the war was turned in favor of the Allies, Great Britain, France and later on the Soviet Union.. Pacts The first pact written was referred to as the Nazi Soviet Pact. The pact caught many off guard due to the fact that fascism was the style of government running Germany, while Russia had a communist form of government. The document had been written at the beginning of the war, August 22, 1939. The signing of the document was the signal that the war was going to begin. Negotiated by two foreign ministers, Joachim Von Ribbentrop and Vyacheslav Molotov, the countries came to an agreement, despite the opposing ideals and goals of each country. When the odds of the war were not in their favor, they had a change of heart and joined forces (Ross). The leaders put their mutual hatred and distrust for one another aside in order to form a mutually beneficial relationship between the countries. The Nazi Soviet Pact addressed the course of action each country would take concerning Poland. Hitler ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since the coming of the early colonization the Kikuyu people have tried to develop a religious attitude that would define it s own culture while adapting forcefully to the European conforms of religion. Missionaries tried to break up the any polygamous relationships that existed between Kikuyu men and women without any concern to what it meant to the two sexes and the community. The larger a mans family the better it was for the community as a whole. This principle now being thwarted by the white missionaries was hard on the whole family unit. Men would have to send away some of their wives and children whom were a part of the community. Without polygamy, women would be driven away and risk being unmarried then shunned out of the community. The Kikuyu people tried to show the missionaries that the bible itself had polygamy prevalent throughout and that some of the most religious men had several wives. As of 2014, based on data provided by the Coalition for the Homeless, there are 59,246 people sleeping in shelters. It costs the City $3,500 a month to house a homeless person, adding up to $856 million a year. There are thousands more who sleep on the streets, but due to lack of data we are not sure of the exact number. Shelters only provide a temporary solution; on average a person is allowed to stay in a shelter for a maximum of 180 days. How can that individual /family regain their self sufficiency in a city where the rent is amongst the highest in the country, and affordable housingis limited. Nearly half of all New York Cityresidents pay more than 30 percent of their income on housing. Median rents have risen 75 percent since 2000, at the same time, that median incomes have declined, and between 1994 and 2012, the city lost 105,242 of rent regulated housing. To address this problem, and restore these people sense of citizenship, we need a citywide reform of the housing system. In spite of this, through pottery analysis, archaeologists are able to learn about different aspects of the site. Not only does it cover a significant section of the coastal region, but the immense harbour, over time, has been completely submerged in the sea. At the site of Tell el Hesi, Petrie noticed specific styles of pottery at different stages of the dig (Petrie 1890). By a comparison of the different pottery forms with similar pieces dated from previous sites, Petrie was able to date the surrounding material through the pottery. Significantly, by studying the pottery forms, Petrie created an association between specific dates and forms of pottery (Petrie 1891) thus created a chronology which revolutionised the archaeology of the Levant. To give an illustration of the impact which Petrie s discovery has had upon archaeology in the Levant, his chronology has been used on archaeological sites in the region throughout the past century (Cole 1984; Tushingham 1986). In Caesarea Maritima Petrie s discovery of dating a site through the pottery has assisted with dating both the city and the harbour of Sebastos. In the harbour, the discovery of pottery was interpreted as evidence that the city was importing goods via sea trade, during the 3rd century AD (Hohlfelder 1988). While excavating Caesarea Maritima the Department of Antiquities in Israel discovered that an area they were excavating was abandoned during the Arab conquest (Yeivin 1955, p. 123). Yet, because there was evidence of pottery from the eighth and ninth centuries in addition to some lamps, it was evidence that after the site had been abandoned it was resettled. Because of the discovery of Mameluke pottery, it became apparent that the site was superceded during the Crusader period (Yeivin 1955, p. 123). Benefactors In Great Expectations Benefactors In the British classic Great Expectations, Charles Dickens uses a pair of benefactors who greatly contrast each other to represent the dual social mindsets of society. Elusive convict Abel Magwitch appears hostile to readers in the beginning of the story, but he later reveals himself as a selfless laborer, working vigorously to finance young Pip s journey into becoming a gentleman. In contrast, Miss Havisham is a venerable old woman who was jilted on her wedding day and raises her adopted daughter to break the heart of adolescent Pip using her beauty. This lack of sincerity proves that Miss Havisham thinks she is socially above Pip and confirms the fact that she is unappreciative and her morals are corrupted. Magwitch s good morals prove to lead him to a satisfying life while even though Miss Havisham starts to show signs of reformation near her demise, her morally defunct lifestyle causes her to die heartbroken, regretful, and lonely. The second way the benefactors differ is through there past life experiences. Headlines such as Second hand smoke kills 600,000 worldwide annually (Falco, 2010) highlights that there s a major problem. My question is, why are people still smoking? It should be a wake up call for those who smoke but even with the hard facts presented, people still decide to smoke. As a psychology student, I was interested in exploring the phenomenology of smokingwanted to address this matter further. While I was interviewing, I had realised that my interviewee tried to make me understand that no matter how bad smoking is how much it affects her health wise, she will not stop unless there s a specific health problem where she will be forced to stop smoking. This particular method can produce qualitative data and therefore a strength is that it s packed with in depth and rich information that can be analysed. Furthermore, thoughts and feelings can be deeply explored as one s view can be explained rather than rated on a number which may mean something different to each individual. As well as a strength, this is also a weakness. From rich and detailed data case studies are created due to the uniqueness of each individual. This mean that we cannot apply one s data to everyone else. In other words, we cannot generalise the data to the rest of population as there are individual differences that need to be taken into consideration. Another weakness with interviews is that it s hard to analyse and draw conclusions from as the interviewer is bombarded with information that will take time to understand to be able to conclude. With this said, the responses from the interviewee are open to researcher bias due to the interpretation of data. I myself have been a victim of this as I chose to interview a ...
