Essay From Germany To America
From Germany to America My Grandma was just eleven years old at the beginning of WW2. Life in
Germany was already harsh because of the repercussions of WW1. During WW2, she was able to
remain in her home located in Darmstadt Germany, but after catastrophic bombings, the city was
left in ruins. By the end of the war, her home was destroyed and Germany was in shambles. The
only thing she could do was come to America and hope for a better life. My grandma said that when
she heard the bomb sirens in Darmstadt, she thought it was the end. The bombings lasted five
months and her parents lost their lives. My grandmother and her sister were just going from shelter
to shelter waiting for the bombings to end. In February of 1944, the bombings ... Show more content

There was an opening in one of the apartments and my grandma's sister decided to get her own
apartment instead of both cramming into their tiny apartment that was no more than four hundred
square feet. They worked in that bakery for the next four years and by that time Karin was almost 80
years old. Karin told my grandma and her sister that she would let them handle day to day
operations and give them a raise. They handled the day to day operations for almost ten years and
then tragedy struck, Karin had passed away. Karin had a husband named Richard and no children,
but she basically considered my grandma and her sister children. After Karin died Richard owned
the bakery and gave ownership of the bakery to them but he still owned the apartment building. My
grandmas sister ended up meeting her husband and leaving New York city so my grandma was the
sole owner of the bakery. Move forward to 1986, my grandma was 58 and had been running that
bakery half of her life, than she
got a call that would change her life. A New York city building developer wanted to purchase the
building from her. The four story building on Manhattan's east village that she inherited for free.
Was now worth a ridiculous sum. The company wanted to knock down the building and build a
brand new apartment build that was much larger. My

How Did Andy Warhol Influence On Pop Art
Andy Warhol is a very famous American "Pop Art" artist. His artwork is known by expressing
celebrity culture and advertisement of the 1960's. People even made a museum about Andy Warhol,
in his native city , Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, it holds an extensive permanent collection of art and
archives. It's even the most largest museum in the United States of America dedicated to a single
"Pop Art" artist. A very creative artist that not only paints but also hand draws, printmaking,
photography, sculpture, skill screening, film, and music. In the late 60's Warhol produced and
managed the rock band "The Velvet Underground" soon to become very famous because of Warhol's
popularity. In the late 70's and early 80's, most Americans were clueless about gay signifiers, and

Between 1962 and 1984, Andy Warhol had three different locations for his studio; the 5th floor at
231 East 47th Street in Midtown Manhattan, the 6th floor of the Decker Building at 33 Union
Square West, and 22 East 33rd Street. It was where his workers would assemble silkscreens, making
its moniker as "The Factory".The Factory was more than just the place where Warhol worked. It was
also his breeding ground of ideas, where he surrounded himself with a strange collection of people
who served as his inspirations, collaborators, and movie stars: fellow artists, musicians, actresses,
socialites, drug addicts, drag queens, free thinkers, and many more, All of them were to be known as
"Warhol's Superstars". I've researched one of Warhol's quotes to see if i can relate to him and seems
like I can."I like to work when I'm not working – do something that may not be considered work,
but to me it's work. Getting exercise by going to the grocery store." this quote relates to me because

I was born in Manhattan, before there were efforts to introduce New Yorkers to "green spaces" and
"street trees." Concrete and steel held me in their grasp; I could have walked multiple blocks
without seeing the color green beyond an occasional glimpse of dead grass and limp shrubbery from
a "secret garden." There was comfort in the noise of traffic, the rumble of the subway, and the
clamorous conversations. My family did not choose Brooklyn per se; we ended up there. Brooklyn
real estate used to be cheap because of its bad reputation, and my family did not have the money to
be picky with the neighborhood we could make our home in. We could not realize our dream of a

Bensonhurst is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in New York City. For decades, the Jewish
and Italian population were equal. Around the 1950s, more Italians immigrated to Bensonhurst,
which pushed a majority of the Jewish population out. In the early 1990s, immigrants from China
and the former USSR arrived. From then on, the neighborhood got increasingly more diverse. In
Bensonhurst alone, there are Eastern European, South Asian, East Asian, Central Asian, Middle
Eastern, Latino and Hispanic immigrants from dozens of countries, in addition to the thriving Italian
and Jewish communities that were already living there. Yet with all this diversity, Bensonhurst was
known nationally for its racism. In 1989, a mob of ten to thirty bat–wielding white teenagers taunted
and shot a black teenager named Yusuf K. Hawkins. A teenage girl bragged about dating Latino and
Black men to the local teenage boys. The boys waited outside her house, looking for a "dark–
skinned Hispanic man" to beat and intimidate. Hawkins was interested in buying a used 1982
Pontiac near the girl's house. There were protests almost immediately after word got out and there
were more protests after the results of the murder trial came out. Three hundred demonstrators
marched through the streets of Bensonhurst, met with slurs, chants, and watermelons. Protest leader

New York City: History and Landmarks
New York City
The first native New Yorkers were the Lenape, an Algonquin people who hunted, fished and farmed
in the area between the Delaware and Hudson rivers. Europeans began to explore the region at the
beginning of the 16th century––among the first was Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian who sailed
up and down the Atlantic coast in search of a route to Asia––but none settled there until 1624. That
year, the Dutch West India Company sent some 30 families to live and work in a tiny settlement on
"Nutten Island" (today's Governors Island) that they called New Amsterdam. In 1626, the
settlement's governor general, Peter Minuit, purchased the much larger Manhattan Island from the
natives for 60 guilders in trade goods such as tools, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The 20th century was an era of great struggle for American cities, and New York was no exception.
The construction of interstate highways and suburbs after World War II encouraged affluent people
to leave the city, which combined with deindustrialization and other economic changes to lower the
tax base and diminish public services. This, in turn, led to more out–migration and "white flight."
However, the Hart–Cellar Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 made it possible for immigrants
from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America to come to the United States. Many of these
newcomers settled in New York City, revitalizing many neighborhoods.
New York City in the New Millennium
On September 11, 2001, New York City suffered the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of the
United States when a group of terrorists crashed two hijacked jets into the city's tallest buildings: the
twin towers of the World Trade Center. The buildings were destroyed and nearly 3,000 people were
killed. In the wake of the disaster, the city remained a major financial capital and tourist magnet,
with over 40 million tourists visiting the city each year.

New York City Attractions Statue of Liberty The Statue of Liberty, the most enduring symbol of
New York City – and indeed, the USA – can trace its unlikely origins to a pair of Parisian
Republicans. In 1865, political activist Edouard René Lefebvre de Laboulaye and sculptor Frédéric–
Auguste Bartholdi went to a dinner party and came away with the notion of building a monument
honoring the American conception of political freedom, which they would then donate to the Land
of Opportunity. Twenty–one years later, on 28 October 1886, the 151ft (45m) Liberty Enlightening

President Grover Cleveland and a harbor full of tooting ships. It's a 354–step climb ... Show more

Louis Brez's Plan De Paris Comparison
Introduction
The two maps that I will compare for my final project are Bernard Ratzer's Plan of the City of New
York (fl.1756–77) and Louis Bretez's Plan de Paris started in 1734.I will focus on the stylistic
differences between both maps with one being a grid map of lower Manhattan and the other 2–d
bird's eye map of Paris. I picked these two maps to examine empire and what that means in a
different form of propaganda. The focus of my comparison will also be the importance of water
access is to a growing city. I will also highlight the difference between the maps ideology of growth
and its place in propaganda or lack thereof.

How Did French Settlers Treat The American Indians
In the 1600's, confrontation between the American Indians and the European colonist led into
egregious action to expand the prosperity and welfare for one's self. Rapid tension among the two
groups in the area of New York, New France, and New England led into countless wars. All
European nations traveled to North America hoping to spread Christianity and have a favorable
balance of trade in which is referred to as mercantilism. Each nation trying to establish dominance
gaining colonies and treated the natives Indians contemptuously. At the end the Europeans were
cruel and bitter toward the American Indians that brought atrocious relationship among them. The

In 1608, a man by the name of Samuel de Champlain established the first permanent settlement for
France called Quebec. Samuel de Champlain was also known as the "Father of New France". French
settlers were quite friendly to the American Indians known as the Huron Indian tribes located near
the great lakes. They created an alliance with these native Indians, as the French settlers exchanged
items such as gun power and other weapons to help the Indian fight in return they gave back fur.
French didn't do this because they like or wanted to help the Indians. They did this for the fur since
the Indians knew where the beavers were at and how to get fur. This was known as French
mercantilism to get more back then you are giving out. Independent trades called coureurs de bois
or known as "runners of the woods" were paid to exchange weapons for fur. The bond between the
French and the Huron Indian grew that soon French settler married Indian women. In 1640's there

France since it was so valuable and lightweight. Fur was used in items such as hats, boot, furniture,

Lia knew the eternal flame roses were of the variety he'd left her that night by their dogwood tree,
which was his intention. On the way back to the apartment, they passed a pharmacy on First
Avenue. He was thinking about this very subject when she put her arms around his neck and said,
"I'll see my ob/gyn and get a prescription for the pill next week, but until then I need Plan B." After
leaving the pharmacy, they spoke about the thrill he experienced when he realized just who her
mother was. Lia told him that she believed her soul chose Rose and Clara as her parents when it was
time to be reborn because Cecilia had lingered in this dimension after her physical death to be with
Daniel, and Daniel had spent so much time in Rose and Clara's flat those first years that it became

magic were part of the day to day life, like it had been for Cecilia, and Athena and Kirsten provided
that. Her dear cousin Rose when she was Cecilia became her dear mother when she became Lia.

Character Analysis Of Jasmine
The novel Jasmine (1989) is set in the present about a young Indian woman in the United States
who, trying to assimilate her to the American way of living, in order to be able to survive changes
identities several times. Jasmine is a titular character and narrator of the novel. She was born nearly
1965 in a rural Indian village known Hasnpur. She narrates her story as a twenty four years old
pregnant widow, living in Iowa with her crippled lover, Bud Ripplemeyer. It takes two months in
Iowa to relate the most recently developing events. But during that time, Jasmine also relate
biographical events that span the distance between her Punjabi birth and her American adult life.
These older biographical events notify the action set in Iowa. Jasmine journey includes five different
settings, two murders, at least one rape, a damage, a suicide, and three love affairs. In the course of
the novel her identities are changed. It changes into Joyti to Jasmine to Jazzy to Jassy to Jase.
Throughout the novel, Jasmine interchanges from Hasnpur, Punjab to Fowlers Key, Florida, to
Flushing, New York, to Manhattan, to Baden, Iowa, and lastly is off to California as the novel ends.
In the beginning of the novel, it is opening phrase, "Lifetimes ago..." (p1) sets in motion the major
motif or theme, the recreation of self, search for self. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She hints at sexual tension between her and Du, and her and Darrel. While Jasmine makes love to
the wheel–bound Bud, it illustrates the reversal of sexual power in her new life. Desire and control
remain closely related throughout the novel. Du's glimpse of the lovemaking adds another aspect of
the sexual politics: there are those in control, those who are helpless, and those spectators waiting to
become art of the action. This resounds with ideas later recorded about Indian notions of love and

The Life and Death of Great American Cities by Jane Jacob
In Jane Jacobs's acclaimed The Life and Death of Great American Cities, she intricately articulates
urban blight and the ills of metropolitan society by addressing several binaries throughout the course
of the text. One of the more culturally significant binaries that Jacobs relies on in her narrative is the
effectively paradoxical relationship between diversity and homogeneity in urban environments at
the time. In particular, beginning in Chapter 12 throughout Chapter 13, Jacobs is concerned greatly
with debunking widely held misconceptions about urban diversity. Jacobs views diversity as the
number of ways in which limited areas of space are allocated, as opposed to having an inherent
racial or cultural connotation. Jacobs emphasizes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jacobs instead champions a combination of aesthetic and practical diversity in the city. Aesthetic
differences can come from buildings constructed during different eras. Jacobs adds that having an
organic mix of commercial buildings and apartments adds to a city's diversity and beauty. To
conclude her argument, Jacobs states that standard commercial establishments are mixed in with
landmarks in functional cities and cites New York as an example. As a native New Yorker, many
restaurants, bars and other commercial buildings are located in propinquity to landmarks such as
Carnegie Hall and the Empire State Building. Jacobs believes that this combination advocates as the
standard for urban planning. Another myth that Jacobs discusses is that diversity is responsible for
traffic congestion. Jacobs' view is in discord with Robert Moses' original mission to create cities that
would be conducive to automobile transportation. Moses viewed his plans to build bridges and
highways through the city as a way to make cities more efficient. He wanted to rid the small blocks
and densely populated regions that created congestion with too many intersections. Jacobs states:
The spaces required for roads and for parking spread everything out still farther, and lead to still
greater uses of vehicles. This is tolerable where the population is thinly

Personal Narrative: A Trip To New York City
When I walk to the Museum of modern art from the subway station, I notice that most of the

that erects from the ground. Comparing Mid– town to East Village, East Village' buildings are much
lower and the relationships with the surrounding and organisms are much more comfortable. Cars
are stuck because of the construction on the roads and honking seems usual to all new Yorkers.
Constant car horns takes over most my brain and the rest are scattered conversations between one
with another. To be honest, it is quite enjoyable and fun to listen to few sentences

Ever since I was a little boy, pizza has always had a special place in my heart. From pizza day in the
school cafeteria to pizza parties at sleep away camp, there was nothing more exciting than when that
cardboard box was opened to reveal a round pie with eight delicious slices waiting to be devoured.
Early on I learned that everybody eats their pizza differently. There are those who fold their slices in
half, those who eat their slices with two hands, and those who (dare I say) like to cut their pizza with
a fork and knife. Some people soak up the olive oil with a napkin, while others don't mind a greasy
slice. Some people like the crust, while others live for that first bite. Some people decorate their

Central Park Essay
Central Park
Central Park was the first landscaped public park in the United States. Advocates of creating the
park – primarily wealthy merchants and landowners – admired the public grounds of London and
Paris and urged that New York needed a comparable facility to establish its international reputation.
A public park, they argued, would offer their own families an attractive setting for carriage rides and
provide working–class New Yorkers with a healthy alternative to the saloon. After three years of
debate over the park site and cost, in 1853 the state legislature authorized the City of New York to
use the power of eminent domain to acquire more than 700 acres of land in the center of Manhattan.

After a new city charter in 1870 restored the park to local control, the mayor appointed park
commissioners. In 1857, the Central Park Commission held the country's first landscape design
contest and selected the "Greensward Plan," submitted by Frederick Law Olmsted, the park's
superintendent at the time, and Calvert Vaux, an English–born architect and former partner of the
popular landscape gardener, Andrew Jackson Downing. The designers sought to create a pastoral
landscape in the English romantic tradition. Open rolling meadows contrasted with the picturesque
effects of the Ramble and the more formal dress grounds of the Mall (Promenade) and Bethesda
Terrace. In order to maintain a feeling of uninterrupted expanse, Olmsted and Vaux sank four
Transverse Roads eight feet below the park's surface to carry cross–town traffic. Responding to
pressure from local critics, the designers also revised their plan's circulation system to separate
carriage drives, pedestrian walks, and equestrian paths. Vaux, assisted by Jacob Wrey Mould,
designed more than forty bridges to eliminate grade crossings between the different routes. The
building of Central Park was one of nineteenth–century New York's most massive public works
projects. Some 20,000 workers – Yankee engineers, Irish laborers, German gardeners, and native–
born stonecutters – reshaped the site's topography to create the pastoral landscape. After blasting out

Housing Issues Of Affordable Housing
Affordable housing has become the paramount issue of cities and dense urban areas. San Francisco
is the posterchild of an unaffordable city that regardless of immense investment from blue chip
firms like Google, Facebook, and their ilk of startups evaluated at $1 billion or more, policymakers
and elected officials must wrestle with the housing affordability crisis that is considered endogenous
to swaths of homelessness and record statistics on crime. In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio
has made affordable housing the centerpiece of his legislation and championed the cause as a social
justice issue–neighborhoods must remain affordable to maintain diversity for all races, ethnicities,
and low–income families. A small sample of 827 New Yorkers by the NY1–Baruch College City
Poll found the main concern of respondents was affordable housing while crime, jobs, and
homelessness were peripheral problems (Cuza, 2016). The public discourse on how to address
housing across the United States has pointed to negative externalities that surround rent–regulation
and homeownership. Conversely, for this essay I will present various cases in order to illustrate the
housing crunch is influenced less by housing and land regulations, or antagonistic homeowners but
is induced by global market forces.
What is known about the dearth of inexpensive living spaces in high–cost, heavy populated areas is
its scarcity is a function of supply. Demand remains a non–issue for policy makers as demand has

Analysis Of The Book ' Honky ' By Dalton Conley
Author and sociologist, Dalton Conley, is a Caucasian boy who grows up in a predominantly
African–American and Latino neighborhood in the Lower East Side of Manhattan during the 1970's
and 80's. In his book, Honky, he tells us a unique view through a young boy's eyes uncovering the
way in which individuals are perceived in social reality, and how some groups of people are
classified. He also speaks about how some groups get better opportunities and privileges then
others. This book is a very powerful autobiography, according to his book, written by, "not your
typical middle class white male." (prologue, p. xiii) He goes on to say that he is middle class, even
though his parents didn't have any money and that he is a white boy, even though he grew up in an

City Needs Provide Three Environments : Commercial, Public...
A city needs to provide three environments: commercial, public and residential. First, a commercial
environment is where people work, it is real state intended for use by for profit business, such as
office complexes, shopping malls, and restaurants. Second, a residential environment describes a
place intended for living in, a house, condo or apartment as opposed to an office or workshop, so
basically its an area for a family. Third, a public environment is a social space that is generally open
and accessible to people. Roads, public squares, parks and beaches are typically considered public
space. Battery Park City truly supplies all these three environments. Battery Park City is located

Is Gentrification a Class War?
"GENTRIFICATION IS CLASS WAR!" (Smith 1) the riots of Thompson Square Park banners
protested. This brings society to ask a question based on the statement at hand, is gentrification a
class war? Decades of history and news pile up on the question at hand, hundreds of neighborhoods
and millions of people have played a role in gentrification, and the word war is not far removed
from the occurrences that have taken place throughout gentrified and gentrifying neighborhoods
throughout the world, but especially in a largely populated city like New York. In Neil Smith's book
The New Urban frontier the reader learns about riots, homesteads, storefronts, and populations
affected by gentrification, in his examples he expands on the class struggles of the Lower East Side.
Not coincidentally, similar situations have occurred distributed though New York City, and the first
example that comes to mind is, Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. For this reason it is easy to observe
similar situations in neighborhoods that display crime, drug use, and racial tension, which then
abated and was transformed into a whole new environment of fashionable stores and trendy events,
gentrification at it's finest. Bedford–Stuyvesant is lined with walk up brownstones, which have large
doorways and windows, and famously are aesthetically pleasing. Bed–Stuy (for short) is easily
accessible through main subway lines and is an easy commute for those who work in Manhattan

of my own personal identity. The phases and circumstances of my adolescent years shaped me to be
the strong independent woman I am today, but withstanding this journey, there were some aspects of
my identity that I had considerable struggles with. As stated in earlier passages, my internal struggle
with my intellectual self was a difficult and long battle, and although today I sit here writing a paper

to make right my academic failure of my past. Like my academic struggles, another internal identity

Downtown Manhattan is said to be one of the most open, accepting and liberal places in NYC.
Although, this neighborhood is known to be one of the most diverse places in New York, it still has
a heavy white population; the schools in this area and those around it reflect similar structure.
Growing up in this area, being a person of minority, this is a rather safe and accepting place, and I
found this to be true in my own upbringing. I am a of mixed race, my mother being an immigrant

Children Of Dust By Ali Eteraz
Children Of Dust Ali Eteraz is a smart and thoughtful writer. He also has a way of adding a bit of
comedic value in his writings when needed. His book "Children of Dust" is a memoir of his life in
Pakistan and America. This book also reads more like a story as opposed to a book that just states
facts. This book "Children Of Dust" is broken down into five parts. Each one of these parts signify a
different name he takes for himself. Meaning, each of these names or parts identify a certain stage in
his life, that he comes to terms with something. Such as Pakistan, Islam, and America and how he
belongs to each.
The first part of this book is called The Promised – Abir ul Islam. This means the Perfume of Islam,
and is about Ali as a child in Pakistan, who learns of his destiny and attends a maraca (Eteraz, 1).
Before Ali was born, his father enters a mannat, or a Covenant with God. He said that if God were
to give him a son, then he would promise that the family will become a great leader and a servant of
Islam. After Ali was born, his mother went to Hajj and brought Ali with her. She then rubbed the
baby's chest on the wall of the Ka'ba in Mecca. This was a way for him to be blessed by God, or
Allah. He grew up in a small Pakistan village and has fond memories of his family. However, he did
grow up in a strict Muslim household. After a brief but hard madrassa education, this chapter in his
life is over. His father, who is a doctor, gets a work visa to

importantly share the same building block for success. The mere fact that all of them grew up in an
area containing a large percentage of people whose families came to the United States and
especially the lower east side of Manhattan and the borough of Brooklyn. It is not a matter of
coloration but is a prime example of causation. The massive influx of Eastern European Jews at the

For the purpose of this paper success will be defined using examples of people who have stood out

success of these communities was only made possible by the ability of the Jewish immigrants to
persevere through the terrible living conditions, anti–Semitic sentiment, scarcity of work, and the
atrocities experienced back home in Europe. Understanding the circumstances that caused a growth
rate in the Jewish population of 170% between 1880 and 1920 is fundamental to dissecting these
communities (Jewish Population in the United States, Nationally). During this time, there was a rush
of anti–Semitic sentiment weaving its way through numerous eastern European countries. The
unfair laws involving enlistment in the army, the burning of Jewish villages called pogroms, and
May Laws made Jewish life a daily struggle. Enlistment laws or quotas were much different for

Causes And Effects Of Gentrification
Gentrification is defined as the process of rehabilitating working–class as well as derelict housing
and consequently transforming an area to be a middle–class neighborhood. The term originated in
Britain (Smith, 2013) Ruth Glass has always been credited with coining the word. In 1922, before
Ruth Glass coined the word gentrification, New York had started experiencing protests against the
moves to bring about gentrification. These protests were majorly by American artists who had
formed their league and complained of the rising rents, especially in the bohemian district. This was
blamed majorly on newcomers who were considered wealthy. The artists claimed most of their
colleagues were being forced out of Manhattan due to the very high rents (Osman, 2016)
By the 1970s, there were losses in the manufacturing jobs whereas an increase occurred in areas
around producer services. There was thus the expansion of employment in areas such as finance,
insurance, and real estate. As a result of all these, the urban geography went through changes too.
Restructuring occurred. By 1976, some written studies had come to the conclusion that
gentrification was rapidly occurring in most cities in the United States that had a population of over
50,000. New York City was among these. Greenwich Village became widely associated with nascent
counterculture as it underwent gentrification (Smith, 2013).

The rise of juvenile delinquencies was at its highest between 1951 and 1960 in the Lower East Side
compared to all of the New York City neighborhoods (Mele, 2000, p.138). Heroin contributed to the
surge of crime in the LES and its use was very popular among the poor. Crime was rampant in the
LES and it was mostly evident around avenues east of Avenue B where most Puerto Ricans lived.
When the Puerto Ricans first entered the Lower East Side, they became scapegoats to the LES's
crime problem. They were labeled as criminals of the neighborhood. Gang violence was very
prominent and active which was due to common turf wars between minority youth gangs (Mele,
2000). They were also blamed for the reappearance and spread of the slum present already in the
Lower East Side. By 1953, as Puerto Ricans in–migration peaked, slum committees were pressed to

America's Major Crisis
The period from 1776 to 1815 witnessed the successful effort of the new United States in
establishing a country. During that period the new country won its independence, constituted itself
as a nation, developed a political system, expanded geographically, and defended itself from
external and internal threats. There were four major crisis that the United States faced in this period
are the Battle Long Island, Battle of Valley Forge, War of 1812, and the Battle of New Orleans,
which I thought it was the major crisis that the United States faced.
First of all, the battle of long island began on August 27, 1776, was the largest battle of the
revolutionary war. It was the first major battle that happened after the Declaration of Independence.

The neighborhood functioned and was stable, but in the eyes of the mayor's administration the

Overpopulation And Congestion In New York City
Traffic Doesn't Cause Congestion, People do
New York City has always had issues with overpopulation and congestion. As of July 2016, the U.S.
Census Bureau has estimated New York City's population at 8,537,673. That's an increase of
362,500 residents (or 4.4 percent) over the April 2010 decennial census count of 8,175,133. The city
has not witnessed such a robust pace of growth in over a half–century. And, as New York's
population continues to upsurge, so does its problems with overcrowding and congestion.
Neighborhoods, like South Jamaica, Queens, where I'm from, hasn't been omitted from the populace

Grandma's Journey From Germany to America

  • 1. Essay From Germany To America From Germany to America My Grandma was just eleven years old at the beginning of WW2. Life in Germany was already harsh because of the repercussions of WW1. During WW2, she was able to remain in her home located in Darmstadt Germany, but after catastrophic bombings, the city was left in ruins. By the end of the war, her home was destroyed and Germany was in shambles. The only thing she could do was come to America and hope for a better life. My grandma said that when she heard the bomb sirens in Darmstadt, she thought it was the end. The bombings lasted five months and her parents lost their lives. My grandmother and her sister were just going from shelter to shelter waiting for the bombings to end. In February of 1944, the bombings ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There was an opening in one of the apartments and my grandma's sister decided to get her own apartment instead of both cramming into their tiny apartment that was no more than four hundred square feet. They worked in that bakery for the next four years and by that time Karin was almost 80 years old. Karin told my grandma and her sister that she would let them handle day to day operations and give them a raise. They handled the day to day operations for almost ten years and then tragedy struck, Karin had passed away. Karin had a husband named Richard and no children, but she basically considered my grandma and her sister children. After Karin died Richard owned the bakery and gave ownership of the bakery to them but he still owned the apartment building. My grandmas sister ended up meeting her husband and leaving New York city so my grandma was the sole owner of the bakery. Move forward to 1986, my grandma was 58 and had been running that bakery half of her life, than she got a call that would change her life. A New York city building developer wanted to purchase the building from her. The four story building on Manhattan's east village that she inherited for free. Was now worth a ridiculous sum. The company wanted to knock down the building and build a brand new apartment build that was much larger. My ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. How Did Andy Warhol Influence On Pop Art Andy Warhol is a very famous American "Pop Art" artist. His artwork is known by expressing celebrity culture and advertisement of the 1960's. People even made a museum about Andy Warhol, in his native city , Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, it holds an extensive permanent collection of art and archives. It's even the most largest museum in the United States of America dedicated to a single "Pop Art" artist. A very creative artist that not only paints but also hand draws, printmaking, photography, sculpture, skill screening, film, and music. In the late 60's Warhol produced and managed the rock band "The Velvet Underground" soon to become very famous because of Warhol's popularity. In the late 70's and early 80's, most Americans were clueless about gay signifiers, and millions of people didn't even think the Village ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Between 1962 and 1984, Andy Warhol had three different locations for his studio; the 5th floor at 231 East 47th Street in Midtown Manhattan, the 6th floor of the Decker Building at 33 Union Square West, and 22 East 33rd Street. It was where his workers would assemble silkscreens, making its moniker as "The Factory".The Factory was more than just the place where Warhol worked. It was also his breeding ground of ideas, where he surrounded himself with a strange collection of people who served as his inspirations, collaborators, and movie stars: fellow artists, musicians, actresses, socialites, drug addicts, drag queens, free thinkers, and many more, All of them were to be known as "Warhol's Superstars". I've researched one of Warhol's quotes to see if i can relate to him and seems like I can."I like to work when I'm not working – do something that may not be considered work, but to me it's work. Getting exercise by going to the grocery store." this quote relates to me because something always has to keep me busy but not grocery shopping but an athletic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay I was born in Manhattan, before there were efforts to introduce New Yorkers to "green spaces" and "street trees." Concrete and steel held me in their grasp; I could have walked multiple blocks without seeing the color green beyond an occasional glimpse of dead grass and limp shrubbery from a "secret garden." There was comfort in the noise of traffic, the rumble of the subway, and the clamorous conversations. My family did not choose Brooklyn per se; we ended up there. Brooklyn real estate used to be cheap because of its bad reputation, and my family did not have the money to be picky with the neighborhood we could make our home in. We could not realize our dream of a two story house in the suburbs with a white picket fence and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bensonhurst is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in New York City. For decades, the Jewish and Italian population were equal. Around the 1950s, more Italians immigrated to Bensonhurst, which pushed a majority of the Jewish population out. In the early 1990s, immigrants from China and the former USSR arrived. From then on, the neighborhood got increasingly more diverse. In Bensonhurst alone, there are Eastern European, South Asian, East Asian, Central Asian, Middle Eastern, Latino and Hispanic immigrants from dozens of countries, in addition to the thriving Italian and Jewish communities that were already living there. Yet with all this diversity, Bensonhurst was known nationally for its racism. In 1989, a mob of ten to thirty bat–wielding white teenagers taunted and shot a black teenager named Yusuf K. Hawkins. A teenage girl bragged about dating Latino and Black men to the local teenage boys. The boys waited outside her house, looking for a "dark– skinned Hispanic man" to beat and intimidate. Hawkins was interested in buying a used 1982 Pontiac near the girl's house. There were protests almost immediately after word got out and there were more protests after the results of the murder trial came out. Three hundred demonstrators marched through the streets of Bensonhurst, met with slurs, chants, and watermelons. Protest leader Reverend Al ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. New York City: History and Landmarks New York City The first native New Yorkers were the Lenape, an Algonquin people who hunted, fished and farmed in the area between the Delaware and Hudson rivers. Europeans began to explore the region at the beginning of the 16th century––among the first was Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian who sailed up and down the Atlantic coast in search of a route to Asia––but none settled there until 1624. That year, the Dutch West India Company sent some 30 families to live and work in a tiny settlement on "Nutten Island" (today's Governors Island) that they called New Amsterdam. In 1626, the settlement's governor general, Peter Minuit, purchased the much larger Manhattan Island from the natives for 60 guilders in trade goods such as tools, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The 20th century was an era of great struggle for American cities, and New York was no exception. The construction of interstate highways and suburbs after World War II encouraged affluent people to leave the city, which combined with deindustrialization and other economic changes to lower the tax base and diminish public services. This, in turn, led to more out–migration and "white flight." However, the Hart–Cellar Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 made it possible for immigrants from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America to come to the United States. Many of these newcomers settled in New York City, revitalizing many neighborhoods. New York City in the New Millennium On September 11, 2001, New York City suffered the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of the United States when a group of terrorists crashed two hijacked jets into the city's tallest buildings: the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The buildings were destroyed and nearly 3,000 people were killed. In the wake of the disaster, the city remained a major financial capital and tourist magnet, with over 40 million tourists visiting the city each year. Today, more than 8 ... • 5. Descriptive Essay On New York City New York City Attractions Statue of Liberty The Statue of Liberty, the most enduring symbol of New York City – and indeed, the USA – can trace its unlikely origins to a pair of Parisian Republicans. In 1865, political activist Edouard René Lefebvre de Laboulaye and sculptor Frédéric– Auguste Bartholdi went to a dinner party and came away with the notion of building a monument honoring the American conception of political freedom, which they would then donate to the Land of Opportunity. Twenty–one years later, on 28 October 1886, the 151ft (45m) Liberty Enlightening the World, modeled on the Colossus of Rhodes, was finally unveiled in New York Harbor before President Grover Cleveland and a harbor full of tooting ships. Louis Brez's Plan De Paris Comparison Introduction The two maps that I will compare for my final project are Bernard Ratzer's Plan of the City of New York (fl.1756–77) and Louis Bretez's Plan de Paris started in 1734.I will focus on the stylistic differences between both maps with one being a grid map of lower Manhattan and the other 2–d bird's eye map of Paris. I picked these two maps to examine empire and what that means in a different form of propaganda. The focus of my comparison will also be the importance of water access is to a growing city. I will also highlight the difference between the maps ideology of growth and its place in propaganda or lack thereof. How Did French Settlers Treat The American Indians In the 1600's, confrontation between the American Indians and the European colonist led into egregious action to expand the prosperity and welfare for one's self. Rapid tension among the two groups in the area of New York, New France, and New England led into countless wars. All European nations traveled to North America hoping to spread Christianity and have a favorable balance of trade in which is referred to as mercantilism. Each nation trying to establish dominance gaining colonies and treated the natives Indians contemptuously. At the end the Europeans were cruel and bitter toward the American Indians that brought atrocious relationship among them. In 1608, a man by the name of Samuel de Champlain established the first permanent settlement for France called Quebec. Samuel de Champlain was also known as the "Father of New France". French settlers were quite friendly to the American Indians known as the Huron Indian tribes located near the great lakes. They created an alliance with these native Indians, as the French settlers exchanged items such as gun power and other weapons to help the Indian fight in return they gave back fur. French didn't do this because they like or wanted to help the Indians. They did this for the fur since the Indians knew where the beavers were at and how to get fur. This was known as French mercantilism to get more back then you are giving out. Independent trades called coureurs de bois or known as "runners of the woods" were paid to exchange weapons for fur. The bond between the French and the Huron Indian grew that soon French settler married Indian women. In 1640's there was a series of conflicts with the Iroquois known as the Beaver War. The fur was so essential to the France since it was so valuable and lightweight. On the way back to the apartment, they passed a pharmacy on First Avenue. He was thinking about this very subject when she put her arms around his neck and said, "I'll see my ob/gyn and get a prescription for the pill next week, but until then I need Plan B." After leaving the pharmacy, they spoke about the thrill he experienced when he realized just who her mother was. Lia told him that she believed her soul chose Rose and Clara as her parents when it was time to be reborn because Cecilia had lingered in this dimension after her physical death to be with Daniel, and Daniel had spent so much time in Rose and Clara's flat those first years that it became home. Lia said she also needed a home environment where the metaphysical sciences and light magic were part of the day to day life, like it had been for Cecilia, and Athena and Kirsten provided that. Her dear cousin Rose when she was Cecilia became her dear mother when she became Lia. Since Lia was a sperm bank baby, she didn't know anything about her biological father, except that her parents had chosen someone highly artistic with a brilliant I.Q., whose interests and leanings mirrored their own, and that he was of Irish and Czech ancestry. • 10. The Life and Death of Great American Cities by Jane Jacob In Jane Jacobs's acclaimed The Life and Death of Great American Cities, she intricately articulates urban blight and the ills of metropolitan society by addressing several binaries throughout the course of the text. One of the more culturally significant binaries that Jacobs relies on in her narrative is the effectively paradoxical relationship between diversity and homogeneity in urban environments at the time. In particular, beginning in Chapter 12 throughout Chapter 13, Jacobs is concerned greatly with debunking widely held misconceptions about urban diversity. Jacobs views diversity as the number of ways in which limited areas of space are allocated, as opposed to having an inherent racial or cultural connotation. Jacobs emphasizes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jacobs instead champions a combination of aesthetic and practical diversity in the city. Aesthetic differences can come from buildings constructed during different eras. Jacobs adds that having an organic mix of commercial buildings and apartments adds to a city's diversity and beauty. To conclude her argument, Jacobs states that standard commercial establishments are mixed in with landmarks in functional cities and cites New York as an example. As a native New Yorker, many restaurants, bars and other commercial buildings are located in propinquity to landmarks such as Carnegie Hall and the Empire State Building. Jacobs believes that this combination advocates as the standard for urban planning. Another myth that Jacobs discusses is that diversity is responsible for traffic congestion. Jacobs' view is in discord with Robert Moses' original mission to create cities that would be conducive to automobile transportation. Moses viewed his plans to build bridges and highways through the city as a way to make cities more efficient. He wanted to rid the small blocks and densely populated regions that created congestion with too many intersections. Jacobs states: The spaces required for roads and for parking spread everything out still farther, and lead to still greater uses of vehicles. This is tolerable where the population is thinly ... From pizza day in the school cafeteria to pizza parties at sleep away camp, there was nothing more exciting than when that cardboard box was opened to reveal a round pie with eight delicious slices waiting to be devoured. Early on I learned that everybody eats their pizza differently. There are those who fold their slices in half, those who eat their slices with two hands, and those who (dare I say) like to cut their pizza with a fork and knife. • 14. Central Park Essay Central Park Central Park was the first landscaped public park in the United States. Advocates of creating the park – primarily wealthy merchants and landowners – admired the public grounds of London and Paris and urged that New York needed a comparable facility to establish its international reputation. A public park, they argued, would offer their own families an attractive setting for carriage rides and provide working–class New Yorkers with a healthy alternative to the saloon. After three years of debate over the park site and cost, in 1853 the state legislature authorized the City of New York to use the power of eminent domain to acquire more than 700 acres of land in the center of Manhattan. In 1857, the Central Park Commission held the country's first landscape design contest and selected the "Greensward Plan," submitted by Frederick Law Olmsted, the park's superintendent at the time, and Calvert Vaux, an English–born architect and former partner of the popular landscape gardener, Andrew Jackson Downing. The designers sought to create a pastoral landscape in the English romantic tradition. Open rolling meadows contrasted with the picturesque effects of the Ramble and the more formal dress grounds of the Mall (Promenade) and Bethesda Terrace. In order to maintain a feeling of uninterrupted expanse, Olmsted and Vaux sank four Transverse Roads eight feet below the park's surface to carry cross–town traffic. Responding to pressure from local critics, the designers also revised their plan's circulation system to separate carriage drives, pedestrian walks, and equestrian paths. Vaux, assisted by Jacob Wrey Mould, designed more than forty bridges to eliminate grade crossings between the different routes. The building of Central Park was one of nineteenth–century New York's most massive public works projects. • 31. Jews In The 20th Century When one thinks of successful New York Jews in the modern age, some of the first names that come to mind are actors like Woody Allen or political figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. All these figures share not only a religious and geographical background, but more importantly share the same building block for success. The mere fact that all of them grew up in an area containing a large percentage of people whose families came to the United States and especially the lower east side of Manhattan and the borough of Brooklyn. It is not a matter of coloration but is a prime example of causation. The massive influx of Eastern European Jews at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century created ... This overview allows for a look at specific cases stemming from the geographical and sociological area this will solve the issue of the subjectivity of success. The success of these communities was only made possible by the ability of the Jewish immigrants to persevere through the terrible living conditions, anti–Semitic sentiment, scarcity of work, and the atrocities experienced back home in Europe. Understanding the circumstances that caused a growth rate in the Jewish population of 170% between 1880 and 1920 is fundamental to dissecting these communities (Jewish Population in the United States, Nationally). During this time, there was a rush of anti–Semitic sentiment weaving its way through numerous eastern European countries. The unfair laws involving enlistment in the army, the burning of Jewish villages called pogroms, and May Laws made Jewish life a daily struggle. Enlistment laws or quotas were much different for Jews than others and at times used to impel to feel the necessity for Jews to convert to Christianity. • 33. Causes And Effects Of Gentrification Gentrification is defined as the process of rehabilitating working–class as well as derelict housing and consequently transforming an area to be a middle–class neighborhood. The term originated in Britain (Smith, 2013) Ruth Glass has always been credited with coining the word. In 1922, before Ruth Glass coined the word gentrification, New York had started experiencing protests against the moves to bring about gentrification. These protests were majorly by American artists who had formed their league and complained of the rising rents, especially in the bohemian district. This was blamed majorly on newcomers who were considered wealthy. The artists claimed most of their colleagues were being forced out of Manhattan due to the very high rents (Osman, 2016) By the 1970s, there were losses in the manufacturing jobs whereas an increase occurred in areas around producer services. There was thus the expansion of employment in areas such as finance, insurance, and real estate. As a result of all these, the urban geography went through changes too. Restructuring occurred. By 1976, some written studies had come to the conclusion that gentrification was rapidly occurring in most cities in the United States that had a population of over 50,000. New York City was among these. Greenwich Village became widely associated with nascent counterculture as it underwent gentrification (Smith, 2013). • 34. Lower East Side Sociology The Lower East Side formerly once joined with the East Village is home to many working class families, many of whom are foreign born. Over the past 50 years, this neighborhood has gone through many changes, both negative and positive. Located in Manhattan, the Lower East Side is surrounded by 14th street, the East River, Bowery, and the Brooklyn Bridge. This area today has faced gentrification and has also faced many housing developments that threaten the character of the community. The rise of juvenile delinquencies was at its highest between 1951 and 1960 in the Lower East Side compared to all of the New York City neighborhoods (Mele, 2000, p.138). Heroin contributed to the surge of crime in the LES and its use was very popular among the poor. Crime was rampant in the LES and it was mostly evident around avenues east of Avenue B where most Puerto Ricans lived. When the Puerto Ricans first entered the Lower East Side, they became scapegoats to the LES's crime problem. They were labeled as criminals of the neighborhood. Gang violence was very prominent and active which was due to common turf wars between minority youth gangs (Mele, 2000). They were also blamed for the reappearance and spread of the slum present already in the Lower East Side. By 1953, as Puerto Ricans in–migration peaked, slum committees were pressed to deal with the growing "Puerto Rican problem". To deal with the "Puerto Rican problem", there was an urban renewal project put into place called the "Puerto Rican Removal Plans", where they relocated many Hispanic families from poor neighborhoods into other poor areas when they couldn't discourage Hispanic migration to the Lower East Side (Mele, 2000, ... However, there a darker side of the transformation the city endured. Under Mayor Koch's administration there was the belief that the only way to improve the city was to renew the neighborhoods and create an area that appealed to the middle class. However, in doing this the working class were the one getting hurt. East Village, was a sector of Manhattan where majority of blacks and Hispanics lived in. They lived here for so long that the atmosphere in this area and culture was very unique. Stores and restaurants opened that represented their culture and lifestyle. The neighborhood functioned and was stable, but in the eyes of the mayor's administration the neighborhood was bound to fail and changes needed to take place. Yet, the question is why was the neighborhood bound to 'fail'. Compared to other Manhattan neighborhoods the main difference was that East Village had lower family income and consisted mostly of minority groups. • 38. Overpopulation And Congestion In New York City Traffic Doesn't Cause Congestion, People do New York City has always had issues with overpopulation and congestion. As of July 2016, the U.S. Census Bureau has estimated New York City's population at 8,537,673. That's an increase of 362,500 residents (or 4.4 percent) over the April 2010 decennial census count of 8,175,133. The city has not witnessed such a robust pace of growth in over a half–century. And, as New York's population continues to upsurge, so does its problems with overcrowding and congestion. Neighborhoods, like South Jamaica, Queens, where I'm from, hasn't been omitted from the populace boom that was once exclusive to the more appealing boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn and The Bronx. When people migrated to the Big Apple from all over the world, they settled in the boroughs closer to public transportation and burgeoning job markets. Jamaica, Queens wasn't considered the ideal borough for families moving from the South to the north because throughout the 19th to early 20th centuries, Jamaica was mainly populated by whites as new Irish immigrants settled around the places known today as Downtown and Baisley Pond Park. By the 1950s, however, in what was later called "white flight", African–American families with middle incomes began to move in as white families fled to Long Island. After the 1970s, as housing prices began to tumble, many Hispanic, such as Salvadorans, Colombians, Dominicans, and West Indian immigrants, moved in. These ethnic groups tended to stay ...
