The Things They Carried By Tim O Brien Essay
Summary:
By and large they carried these things inside, maintaining the masks of composure (21). In Tim O
brien s The Things They Carried, the American soldiers of the Vietnam War carry much more than
the weight of their equipment, much more than souvenirs or good luck charms or letters from
home. They carried within themselves the intransitive burdens of fear, of cowardice, of love, of
loneliness, of anger, of confusion. Most of all, they carry the truth of what happened to them in the
war a truth that only those who fought in the jungles and the mountains and the marshes of
Vietnam can ever understand. These men can share their stories; but all that s all they are to
everyone else: stories.
The Things They Carried is a story made up of stories about how the men carried their war stories
and their truths during the war and after the war.
Personal Response:
This was another novel that I had been wanting to read for a long time, and I was glad to have an
excuse to buy and read it.
This book made me feel emotions so deep that I was in the novel, that I was in Vietnam with Tim
O Brien and Jimmy Cross, and at the end I was there with Ted Lavender and Linda.
As soon as I finished the last word of the last sentence on the last page, I wanted to get in my car
and drive to Texas. I just wanted to be in his presence and soak up his mastery of words. I wanted
to hear his truths. I just wanted to know him (I still do). I felt his words in my heart in a way that

Rhetorical Analysis Of Lou Gehrig s Farewell Speech
Professional baseball player, Lou Gehrig, in his speech, Farewell to Baseball Address, sheds
light on his baseball career and why it was coming to an abrupt end. Gehrig s purpose was not to
be distraught about him getting diagnosed with ALS, but instead send a message to not take
anything for granted and be thankful for everything that happens. He adopts a thankful tone by
showing how humble he is to have played the game of baseball with many great people thus
using grateful terminology for his teammates and associates and reassuring terminology for
baseball fans who were worried about him and his fatal disease. Gehrig appeals to ethos in his
farewell speech by explaining to his audience how lucky he feels about who he was able to play...

Without the usage of pathos, Gehrig s farewell speech wouldn t have been nearly as effective
with his audience and the audience that would hear his speech or read his speech at a later time.
Without pathos, it would ve just been another professional sport players retirement speech. Many
key elements contributed to the emotional appeal of Gehrig s speech; first, he was finally
addressing the reason why he was retiring from baseball, which was because of a life threatening
disease known as ALS. Always regarded as one who could pull through anything, Gehrig finally
made it clear through this speech that battling this disease was going to be the hardest battle yet
and it would prevent him continuing to do what he loved which was play baseball. Nevertheless,
Gehrig did not wish to evoke sadness out of his audience, throughout his speech, he sought to give
hope over despair, thankfulness over pity, and humbleness over self righteousness. It was so
important that he displayed these emotions because then he would contrast to the ideals that many
American people had come to believe. Also throughout the speech Gehrig did not seek sympathy
from his situation; in fact, he did not once mention his disease specifically and rather focused on the
positive moments that he had experienced throughout his life. Hence, people connected to this
speech because here was a man who had experienced hardship upon hardship and yet still

Small Town Living In Our Town
The play Our Town, illustrates the true essence of small town living. When living in a small
town, people see a familiar face wherever they go and know the history and character behind
these individuals. Life in a small town can lack options for entertainment at times; some may
even categorize it as dull . Yet, anyone can see that Grover s Corners, the town written about in
Our Town, and Colby, Kansas contain a life full of personality and charm. The citizens of Grover
s Corners live a basic life throughout the majority of the play. The play portrays daily life, loveand
marriage, and how delicate life can amount to. The life lived today in Colby compared with
Grover s Corners depicts several similarities as well as differences. Each person in the small
town lives a simple life that meets their basic needs: working, their political philosophy and their
religious affiliation. In Act I, the Lady in a Box quizzes Mr. Webb about the culture of the
community. The playwright expresses this through Mr. Webb saying, Well, ma am, there ain t
much not in the sense you mean (Wilder 17). This means the townspeople don t attend elaborate
concerts, but enjoy simple pleasures such as the playing of a piano at local events. In our town,
very rarely do big promoted concerts choose Colby as their venue, but citizens get to enjoy a lot
of local talent. The population of Grover s Corners consists of 3,149 people compared to Colby
which has around 5,418 people. Furthermore, the

Transformity Vs Conformity
What do these texts suggest about the conflict between pursuing a personal desire and choosing to
conform? Support your idea(s) with reference to one or more of the texts presented and to your
previous knowledge and/or experience.
Sacrifice Praise for Self Success From a young age, children are told to by their parents to Be
yourself in all circumstances. They are told that if they stay true to themselves, then they will have
true friends, they will be content, and they will be successful. This lesson is taught much, but
seldom followed. Most people have the desire to follow their own path, but the motivation is
lacking to sacrifice what is expected and therefore, many conform. The texts The Jackhammer
Syndrome and The Orchid Thief address this idea, introducing the conflict that there is between
conformity and personal fulfillment, suggesting that, to follow one s own desires is the difficult
path, but it is the path that leads to true prosperity. For someone to pursue their desires requires
them to sacrifice self consciousness of what other people think of the way they re living their life.
Living life in order to please others is an extreme waste of potential. In, The Orchid Thief, John
Laroche sacrificed his chance to become a surgeon in order to live a more simple life and pursue
his countless passions. Laroche was given the nicknames Troublemaker and Crazy White Man ,
and was often referred to as eccentric. Although often labelled in a negative way,

Neurological Paper
Neurological Changes in a Patient with Several Brain Masses During clinical this week, I took care
of an 81 year old man who was admitted for having an altered mental status and brain masses. The
family was at the hospital and had to quickly make the decision on whether they wanted to go
through with a craniotomy and have the masses biopsied to further go through with treatment, or to
choose the comfort measures option. Throughout my time at clinical this week, I was able to
recognize a neurological decline in this patient s condition. Throughout this paper, the change in

Cooper et al., a quasi experimental design was done to assess the nurse teams abilities to manage
deteriorating patients. Both skill performance and situation awareness were analyzed. Results
showed that only 64% of nurses knew that their patient s condition was deteriorating. A 57% rating
was given for teamwork. Overall, this study showed that there was a low application of knowledge
shown by the nurses. It is suggested that nurses be taught how to identify when a patient s condition
is deteriorating (Cooper et al., 2012). According to Chan, Zhou, Liaw (2013), ineffective nurse
physician collaboration leads to work dissatisfaction and compromised quality patient care. A
literature search was done to explore the attitudes of physicians and nurses towards their
collaboration, the factors that affect physician nurse collaboration, and also strategies to improve
this. Results showed that physicians viewed the physician nurse collaboration as less important,
although they rated the quality of the collaboration higher than the nurses did. Factors that affected
the collaboration included respect, trust, unequal power, understanding their roles, and also task

League Of Legends Thesis Statement
Exposure to the unknown can affect everyone in different forms, but video games give nonpareil
power that people would never obtain otherwise. Playing League of Legends has become an
extremely common activity of my life since I began playing what seems like decades ago
however in actuality has been only two years. League of Legends is more than a game; League of
Legends is a borderline sport, with ordinary people with skills indifferent from mine, obtaining
salaries equal, if not higher, than athletes in the NFL, NBA, NHL, FIFA, and etc. I was almost
immediately invited to a game by my friend Bryce and his cousin, KrГ©l. KrГ©l made it
obvious that he had lacked prior knowledge of the champion he was playing. Bryce s family had

of negativity crash into me, turning every mistake made into verbal warfare. Nobody was as
furious as Bryce, telling KrГ©l that he would never play League with his cousin again, and that he
was trash. It seemed that our words were coated with toxicity, each stinging and chipping away at
our morals, and knowing we wouldn t be punished, as if behind a username, they are covered in a

Positivism In Jurisprudence
As Nigel Simmonds puts it in his book, Central Issues in Jurisprudence, Hart was one of the
greatest exponents of Legal Positivism in the mid twentieth century. In his careers most famous
work, The Concept of Law , Hart explains the nature of law in relation to the framework of legal
thought while also outlining the essential characteristics of a robust legal system. As an
introduction to his work, Hart explains that his theory is based upon the works of Jeremy Bentham
and Jane Austin who were some of the earlier proponents of Legal Positivism but in such an effect

He further explained that not only did this dangerously conflate two different enterprises vis Г vis
the issues at hand but also that law were ought to be measured against the standard of utility
rather than as an explanation backed by misguided beliefs. For Austin, Bentham s disciple, there
was a distinct difference between what Law is and what it ought to be, which was highly
synonymous of Bentham s work. One must not confuse Austin s work as a briefer, synonymous
and more objective version of Bentham s theory as despite the similarities between their theories
there were differences too such as Bentham s proposition of Complete law that adequately
expresses the will of the legislature by way of codification as opposed to Austin s acceptability
of judicial law making. This essay aims at briefly explaining the key components of Hart s theory
while constantly comparing and contrasting his propositions with those of his predecessors,
Bentham and Austin as the former quintessentially flows from Hart s aim, the one of providing
the world of Jurisprudence with an improved analysis of some of the earlier proposed correlation
between law, morality and coercion. This will be later followed by a detailed analysis and subtle
criticism, where necessary, of Hart s theory because the important question pertinent to the validity
of his philosophy will be left unanswered if his departure from classical positivism isn t examined.

Literary Analysis Of Eve Of St. Agnes
Eve of St. Agnes had an overwhelming amount of information to take in, and I mean a lot. The
setting where the poem had taken place is what had drawn me in from the get go. What s more
thrilling than an enchanting gothic castle, twisting hallways, the concept forbidden love being
tossed around, medieval feasts, bloodlust dating back all the way to ancient times? I felt as if I was
traveling through time each page I had turned.
The initial part of the poem had major Romeo and Juliet characteristics with Keats giving
Porphyro and Madeline s families a rivalry, but never actually telling his readers how they got it.
Personally, I felt like we really weren t able to grasp how these two kids even got together either or
what their relationship is really like. Instead, Keats relied heavily on the star crossed lovers kept
apart by the family feud motif to get his readers to vividly fill in the blanks.
Nevertheless, Porphyro is a jerk. He turned out to not be the romantic hero I initially had
perceived him to be. My dumb, naive, and sappy heart thought it was adorable that he strategized
this plan to run away with his girlfriend, the alleged love of his life, who had also happened to be
part of the bloodline that is in rivalry with his. I had already taken on this abstract picture in my
mind of some cute prince whisking this princess off her feet, running off into the sunset on a horse,
and with her in his arms.
But that picture got annihilated when he had cynically tricked

Water quality is the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics in a body of water. It
describes the condition of the water and the measure of the biotic species or human needs. If a lot

contaminated by contaminants and pesticides which are used to measure the water quality.
Drinking water and the health of ecosystems are some things included in the water quality.
Contaminants and pesticides are used to measure the water quality. Dissolved oxygen, the amount

Habeas Corpus Essay
The Right of Habeas Corpus and the War on Terror
Introduction
September 11, 2001 changed the United States forever. This disastrous attack on the Pentagon and
the twin towers at the World Trade Center destroyed the lives of thousands of people. Over 3,000
people were killed, including hundreds or firefighters and policemen, many of which were never
found. The attackers were Islamic terrorists from Arab nations.
The war on terror declared by the Bush Administration, had become one of the most important

Since the September 11th terrorists attacks, President Bush attempted several times to revoke the

Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar
Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar The works of Sylvia Plath have always been at least slightly
controversial; most of them have themes of feminism, suicide, or depression. Plath was born in
1932 in Boston, Massachusetts, and by the age of twelve she was reported to have had an IQ of
about 160 (Kelly). Growing up in an age in which women were expected to be nothing more than
conservative housemaids, Plath stood defiant against the views of society, choosing to expose any
misogynistic prejudices or hateful prospects against mental illness through her writings (Allen).
Perhaps the most famous work of Sylvia Plath s is The Bell Jar a book that follows the mental
deterioration of a nineteen year old girl named Esther through the narration of Esther herself.
Although Sylvia Plath hated life in general and committed suicide at the age of 32 after her husband
left her, the myriad autobiographical elements, metaphors, and motifs that appear throughout her
works produce a beautifully vivid representation of people, the world, and life itself ( Sylvia Plath

she develops bitterness toward everything that appears to prevent her from achieving things she

that you use for relaxed hair. For natural hair all you need is water, wild growth and moisturizer.
Relaxed hairmake your hair look very thin also you using perms which has chemicals that s not
healthy for your hair. Some women think relaxed hair is better than natural. Why is that ? It s
because they think when your hair natural it s very unlikeable. Natural hair has all the components
to grow healthy, long, and thick hair.
Natural hair does grow healthier than natural hair because you do not use chemicals to harm
your hair. Black women discover their natural kinky hair. Natural hair is thicker because your
hair follicles are textured. Yes I can say when you wash your hair and try to detangle it, it s a
challenge to do. Natural hair is healthier because it doesn t stripped away your hair. With natural
hair keep your scalp moisturized. Natural hair curl pattern is very pretty. I think going natural
gives your hair a better chance to grow since it isn t being damaged by chemicals. Relaxed hair is
bad because some people flat iron they hair every two weeks, that s not good because heat can
break your hair off.
Many women spend so much money on there relaxed hair. Relaxed hair is very expensive when
you go to the salon every 2 weeks. After a women decides to go natural, she will not go

The Varying Personas of People in Twitter and in Real-life
The Varying Personas of People in Twitter and in Real life Tom Marvolo Riddle from J.K.
Rowling s Harry Potter series had stored parts of his soul into different inanimate objects called
horcruxes which caused him to lose control of himself and become the infamous, Lord
Voldemort. This gave him the ability to live even though his physical body was gone and his
soul continued to thrive in his set of carefully selected objects, patiently waiting for the right
time to strike. While the world of Harry Power is only a work of fiction, social networking sites
have given ordinary persons the ability to create their own set of horcruxes , not through
inanimate objects but through various social networking accounts. Through these modern
horcruxes , people can divide the different personalities they possess into their social networking
accounts to reach a wider set of audiences and live in the world of the Internet. Social networking
sites have become popular over the years, like twitter, which allows users to present themselves
through their tweets using photos, hyperlinks, or hashtags. Boyd (2010) argued that social media
platforms like Twitter encourages members to use their actual identities but it does not mean
people are presenting themselves online the way they do in real life. A real life persona is an
identity that a person uses to present himself in the real world according to Goldbeck et al. (2011)

What Is The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People
Eric Salas
Professor Gamboa
BA240 03
Covey Paper
Habits come in many forms and they may be good, bad or just in between and not really matter.
It could be positive thinking, blaming yourself or something as simple as forgetting to turn off
the lights. Stephen Covey defines habits as the intersection of knowledge, skill and desire. In his
book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People , he shares a couple of habits that can lead an individual
to personal and professional success. Out of the seven habits, I feel that the first three which are
being proactive, beginning with the end in mind and putting first things first are the most
fundamental habits to paving the road for becoming a better individual and manager.
Being proactive means to take action and be responsible. Covey expresses that Highly proactive
people recognize responsibility. They do not blame circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for
their behavior. (Covey). In accordance with Covey s idea of being proactive, many people do not
want to assume responsibility. As an individual, something that is really important about being
proactive is being able to accept ambiguity. Being able to be okay with the unknown is a key
factor to avoid being reactive and letting your environment influence your choice. New and old
managers do not have to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The concept from this habit is easy to associate with managers. Managers have goals and often
think about the best possible way to achieve them, but at times they lose focus on the End and let
the Now shape their decisions. With what this habit entails, managers must also make sure that the
decision they make is what truly matters to them. Some make decisions that go against their moral
values and in the end lose meaning about what lies at the core of their

Ol Lima Steakhouse
1.Introduction:
General Manager of Ol Spurs Steakhouse in Brisbane, a locally owned steakhouse and restaurant
has reported productivity and profit loss, which is negatively affecting the brand and the company s
profit margins. After careful consideration, it was discovered that employees within the various
sections are confused who should be doing what and to whom they should be reporting. This report
will analyse the issue and discuss key management factors when addressing staff. Two management
theories will be proposed as recommendations to measure the problem and to prevent the issue from
happening in the future.
2.0 Analysis of the issue:
Ol Spurs Steakhouse is emerging in becoming a leading steakhouse restaurant in Brisbane s strong
restaurant market. With a growing reputation and high service and stock demands staff are
becoming confused between various sections within the department and unsure whom they should
be reporting to. The issue in mind, the application of planning, organising and controlling should
rectify the issue and prevent confusion from happening again in the future.

Explain Who Is To Blame For The Death Of Romeo And Juliet...
Who s to blame for Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare? There are a lot of people that
could be blamed for it and those people aren t the ones who did it at all. But people think
differently and we have different opinions about things as well. Some people would think that s
it s them that could be blamed and it could be others still. It also just could have been just Juliet
because she s the one who took the poison that would put her to sleep for 48 hours and it could
be Romeo because he killed Tybalt and that he has been banished from his home. Nobody really
knows who to blame for their deaths really. So who is really to blame for their deaths? Romeo

Thats one of the people that most people might blame for them to be dead. He is the one who
wanted them to be together and get married and so that the two families would be friends and
not fight. He is the one who also gave Juliet the poison that would make her fall asleep for a
while, which gave the family the thought that she did die because of that and they think that she
died somehow else. If Friar Lawrence didn t give Juliet that poison then maybe they wouldn t
have died and then they would be together like they were meant to be. That could have not made
Juliet die and Romeo as well and make their parents and families sad. Another person that could
be blamed is Juliet. She is very young and is too young to marry now a days. I think she should
of waited to get married and then she could have been fine. But she has fallen in love with
someone a little old for her and she wanted to marry him just like that. That is the crazy part
about it. Her parents should have also waited to have her get married and then she could have
been just fine about it. The nurse doesn t help either, she helped Juliet get in touch with him

Colonialism and Morality in The Moonstone and The Man Who Would Be King
Let us presuppose to begin with that the cursed jewel is an impossibility and the powers of the
Moonstone or any other gem for that matter only exist on an atomic level ( i.e. the energies which
bind such objects together and make them what they are). Additionally it should be considered that
no such object is the means by which a being exerts powers and no such object consciously exerts
powers itself. Notions of the cursed or powerful jewel can be seen as a bi product of what Said

The Moonstone is a narrative device which illuminates the text in multiple ways.
Such a device remains popular in western adventure literature and film, whether in the form of
an Egyptian scarab or a monkey s claw. The mystical object with powerful properties is involved
in adventure tales from Conan Doyle through Indiana Jones, even one of the most famous of
modern legends the fates of Carter and Caernarfon excavators of Tutankahmun s tomb involves a
curse and shameful Orientalism. Perhaps the best indicator of such notions becoming part of
western folklore is when they become utilised as simple metaphor. This is apparent in John
Huston s 1975 film version of Rudyard Kipling s The Man Who Would Be King. The desire of
the central protagonists; Peachy Carnahan and Daniel Dravitt to become Kings of an isolated
region of the Indian sub continent is built upon by the abundance of treasures that becomes
available to them, an aspect absent from Kipling s original tale. Huston s version increases the
greed of the two adventurers which in turn provides a more satisfying justification of their fates
than we receive in the original short story.
Whilst admiring giant rubies Huston s Peachy remarks All we need do is fill our pockets and we d
be millionaires. Dravitt then retorts that if they stayed they would be Kings. Carnahan subsequently

If you thought the people in hawaii in the 1800 s had it easy would be right a little but that

Taking a Look at Peer Pressure
Peer pressure is the influence of one s peer group. In our society today peer pressure has become
very relevant all around us. A lot of peer pressure occurs in high school and college, where
people are just trying to fit in. In the paper, I will talk about how peer pressure affects
individuals, examples of peer pressure and In the first article, which is called Relationships
between degrees of self esteem and peer pressure in high school adolescents, it examines the
relationship between youths self esteem and peer pressure degrees permitting to their gender
and socioeconomic standing. In the study, there was a question they proposed and that was, Is
there a positive or negative correlation between adolescents self esteem and peer pressure in
terms of their gender? As children become teens and grow older they become less dependent on
their family and more dependent on their friends when it comes to making choices of moral and
values whether they are big or small. Peer pressure is not always a bad thing. Teens often learn
how to interact with each other by doing activities that their peers have done in the past. An
example from the article is a socially awkward kid could learn how to fit in with others by
discerning and imitating other teenagers. A positive peer group often can boost ones self esteem if
they are accepted in the right way. In the past, it has been stated that adolescents that are exposed to
peer pressure are mostly males. To answer the question above, in

The Planning Of Software Development Project
ABSTRACT In the planning of software development project, a major challenge faced by
project managers is to predict the re work effort. (re work effort is the effort require to fix the
software defects identified during system testing). Project manager objective is to deliver the
software that not only meets the time and cost requirements but also the quality requirements
given by the client. To ensure the quality of the software, many testing cycle will be conducted
before it is finally delivered to the client for acceptance. Each testing cycle is a costly affair as it
involves running all possible test scenarios in all possible environments, followed by defect
fixing and re verification of defects. On average, there are 2 3 testing cycle conducted but this
depends on number of defects identified during testing. Number of defects will depend on the
team expertise and whether they earlier worked on similar projects and technologies. Hence, it
becomes critical to predict the number of defects identified during testing and it is a very
challenging task as it requires a good predicting model to predict the re work effort. In this paper,
we describe the relationship among software size, no of software defects, productivity and efforts
for web based development projects. This relationship is established by using the multiple linear
regression technique on the benchmarking data published by International Software Benchmarking
Standard Group. Results suggest that web based projects

Definition Essay Draft
Words are not defined by dictionaries or professors, or officials, but by how people use them,
how they are put in to context, through the timeless evolution of meanings. Words can have many
different faces, many of which can be powerful or quite weak, others can have a friendly face or
a mean one. Sometimes there are words that can start out having a friendly face, but with time
society can turn them into a mean face that betrays its former self, words like this exist all across
modern social interaction, some can be more prominent than others and promote an ignorant
atmosphere as to which we are forced to live in. The word gay is no exception, many people apply

Gay wasn t used to replace homosexual as a noun until the twentieth century (Oxford English
Dictionary). That was when politics and news corporations used the word to label the
homosexual community as gay. In recent events, for example, there have been instances such as
the Gay Rights Movement which has been mentioned in media, in turn creates it as a label for
homosexuals. So nowadays homosexuals are officially known as gays. Although gay became a
technical term in the professional field, at a local level, the word turned away from being a
noun and became an adjective, just like in the beginnings of the word; but it had taken on a very
different meaning from what it was originally. Gay: adj., stupid, dumb, out of favor. That seems
to be how our generation defined this word, it is sad to see that society has come to this, to
relate a group of people to the words dumb or stupid. People use this word in many cases that
don t even have any relation to the actual meaning of the word, mostly as a derogatory term or
insult. For example, if a student chooses to complain about a homework assignment or how a
teacher runs their classroom, they usually will say Man, this is so gay, I hate this . To the student,
their statement is exactly the same as, Man, this is so stupid . It is pitiful how this generation has
done this to such a word that has so much other meaning behind it. It is the same story for similar
words, like faggot or queer. These terms have

Disadvantages Of CHO Cells
CHO (Chinese Hamster Ovary) cells are cell lines extracted from the ovary of the Chinese Hamster
and are exclusively used for commercial purposes in the production of recombinant therapeutic
proteins. Some proteins are to be synthesized using mammalian cells rather than the commonly used
microbial cells as the latter lacks the exact machinery to produce the complete protein or for safety
concerns. Among the mammalian cells, CHO cells continue to be the choice for the production of
several therapeutic proteins.
However there are certain disadvantages associated with CHO cells which include low productivity,
substrate product stability, slower growth rate, low cell density, etc. These cell linesconsume
nutrients continuously beyond stoichiometric needs. Thus, the mode of operation should be chosen
in such a way that they overcome the disadvantages of the CHO cell line.
The large scale production of therapeutic proteins in industries is done in suspension culture as the
adherent cell line poses a challenge in scaling up. Currently there are two dominant modes of
operation for producing therapeutic proteins based on mammalian cell lines (Hu and Aunins, 1997)

Planning For An Emergency Operation Plan
Planning is a way of preparing for an event that will happen in the future. Some plans are
relatively straightforward, and others are complex and can take months to finalize. Plans are a
means to achieve the desired result. Once the result is identified, you work backward to
determine what steps will be necessary to achieve the result or goal. This process also applies to
disaster preparedness planning. To better understand what the goals or end results should be for
an emergency operation plan (EOP), it is necessary to study and analyze post incident reports
from recent events. There will always be lessons to learn from every incident regardless of size or
complexity. The military recognized this fact and established a means of sharing post information
incident with what has become to be known as an After Action Review (AAR). This review
addresses what, why, and how events occurred. Originally, AARs were an informal debrief that
compares the intended outcome versus the actual result of an event. The primary focus of the AAR
is for the participants to examine their actions and learn from what went right and wrong during an
event, which will facilitate to better decision making in future events. Since their inception, AARs
have advanced and are found in formal and informal settings. Many post disasters documentation
include some form of an AAR to document the lessons learned from the incident. From these
lessons learned, planners should review previous disaster events,

Images are important as images can speak a great number of words. Nikki Giovanni s poem
Knoxville, Tennessee uses imagery to depict the theme of joys of childhood and family. The lines
you can eat fresh corn/from daddy s garden (lines 3 4) depicts an image of a comfortable family
feel with a home style vibe. The imagery of the food can help contribute to the theme as the
unidentified person has ate with his familyand is reminiscing about it showing the love and
importance of family. The simplicity of the words fresh and daddy are strong words which help
show the image in your mind. The lines, and be warm/ all the time/ not only when you go to bed
/ and sleep (lines 21 24) depicts an image of a person being warm and comfortable at the same
time. The meaning of those lines... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Tennessee uses diction to illustrate the theme of joys of childhood and family. The lines and
okra/and greens/and cabbage/and lots of/barbecue/and buttermilk/and homemade ice cream
(lines 5 11) show that the poet s diction is repetitive and simple. The repetition of the word and
with the simplicity of the words show that the writing is like a child s. The words homemade
and barbecue can create a emotional connection between the reader and the piece of literature
where it can create a reminiscence of a family gathering from childhood. The lines and go to the
mountains with/your grandmother/and go barefooted/and be warm (lines 18 21) shows that the
poet s diction is simple. The simplicity of the words in the quote shows that it can be read by even
a young child. The words barefooted and warm can create a connection between the reader and the
writing where it can create a reminiscence of a moment when the reader walked or did something
outside barefooted in his childhood. Thus, relating to the theme of childhood and

Alienation And Anomie Essay
Both concepts of alienation and anomie signify how individualism has impacted the social
structures through industrialization and the division of labour. Both Marx and Durkheim s theories
emphasize the relationships between people in society and how this impacts on separateness and
individualism within it; however, both theories are different. Where Marx is concerned he focuses
on being alienated as a result of materialized matter through the bourgeoisie alienating oneself from
culture, for Durkheim anomie is due to the lack of a collective conscience within society
preventing both regulation and integration of culture; for Durkheim this negatively impacts on
social solidarity and cohesion. Alienation occurred after the periods of slavery and serfdom arose a
capitalist society, workers selling their labour skills in order to earn a living wage. In comparison to
feudal societies where wealth was inherited, capitalist societies through the bourgeoisie was about
owning the means of production enabling them to own private property and this being wealth.
However, the cost price of the goods produced was significantly higher than the labourer s wages
resulting in a profit for the bourgeoisie, this being the method of attaining wealth. The capitalist
mode of production generates its wealth through exploitation of the proletariat. Karl Marx (1970)
stated ...the accumulation of wealth at one pole of society involves a simultaneous accumulation of
poverty, labour torment, slavery,

Cultural Relativism And Its Impact On The World
Cultural relativism is the idea that all cultures are equal and no one is better than another. This way
of thinking was created and elaborated on by three main philosophers. Franz Boas, Alain Locke and
Robert Lowie were nineteenth century philosophers who shaped the ideas on concepts of Cultural
Relativism. These three men focused on the idea that one cannot judge other cultures because they
only see through eyes that have been influenced by their surroundings. They used relativist ideas
that existed already and expressed them on the world and the many different cultures that exist in it.
They created a mainly atheistic viewpoint in which the idea of a central moral truth and a higher
power was discounted. Only the people within a culturecould create moral codes and laws for
themselves. Franz Boas was born on July 19, 1858 in Minden, Germany. Boas grew up in a well
educated family and was encouraged to follow his own beliefs and think for himself. From a very
young age, Franz Boas was interested in natural history and studied it throughout his years of
schooling. He continued his studies and graduated with a degree in physics, even though he
considered himself more of a geographer than a physicist. This interest in geography is what drove
him to delve deeper into the ideas of cultural difference and led to the beginnings of cultural
relativism. Through his studies, Franz Boas became drawn to anthropology, the study of
humankind. He became interested in

Self Reflection Paper
I was a quiet child growing up; not necessarily shy, but introverted. Now, I consider myself an
extroverted introvert. Growing up, I probably didn t come across as a leader. My kindergarten
teacher wrote in my assessment that I was shy; I didn t speak up enough for myself when I was
bullied throughout my elementary school years, and I probably stood in the shadows more than I
realized throughout middle school. I could have been more decisive during high school.
A person doesn t become a leader overnight; I didn t. I began speaking up more because I was
done with my silence. I stepped out because creating change doesn t come from being passive. I
made decisions because nothing gets done by being in limbo.
It was a ripple effect. Perhaps it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Our planet and our complete and utter dependence on it inspired me whether I realized it or not
to become a leader. It is also my desire to pursue a career as a scientist and policymaker that
inspired me to become a leader. My enthusiasm and determination for a greener, healthier planet
inspires, I hope, others to do the same.
When I came to college, it took me a little while to find my niche. I didn t remain complacent,
however. I put myself into various leadership roles, whether it was inviting physicians via email
to the Fall Pre Med AMSA dinner or being the student recruitment chair for the Colleges Against
Cancer student group. I met a lot of great people and built relationships along the way, but I
knew that something was missing. In the spring of my freshman year, I decided to be the Boy
Scouts STEM Merit Badge head counselor when I was in the Energy Club on campus. I
organized a team of individuals in making a presentation and planning activities on renewable and
nonrenewable energy for the Boy Scouts STEM event back in April 2016. It was fun, and I
thoroughly enjoyed engaging the boy scouts in learning about energy, and I hope that it made an
impression on them to pursue green STEM careers when they grow up. Even though it had been a
one day event, the preparation beforehand and the event itself was bringing me back to my roots.
In my sophomore year of college, I knew I had to make a change. I no longer considered myself a

The Economic Characteristics Of The Global Motor Vehicle...
1.Describe the economic characteristics of the global motor vehicle industry. Global vehicle
industry has experienced several changes due to internal and external factors. External factors
were such as the effects of Great Recession and following credit crunch, which has made it hard
for consumers to undertake loan for vehicle purchasing causing a slowdown in depend, which was
further compounded by uncertain economic conditions. Since vehicles are dependent on gas, the
industry overall has been influenced by oscillating price of gas. Certain vehicle manufactures did
not foresee a change in trends, that the times of high prices, consumers were looking for more
efficient and low fuel cars, which has spurred another branch of motor... Show more content on

Some people love their first cars, their first new cars, or their collector cars. I happen to have a
special place in my heart for my current car. I drive a Toyota Solara SLE V6 and I absolutely love it
because it is me. My car is a color known as Oceanus Blue on stone grey and has a great set of
options. I have satellite radio, a six disc CD player along with a sun roof and yes the customary air
conditioning and heater. My car also has heated leather seats and lovely wood grain touches on the
interior. The fact that it is a coupe gives it appealing lines and a sporty feel. Enough about the specs
of the vehicle and let me talk a little about the sentimental value. The car also has a great on board
trip computer that provides information on average miles per gallon of gas as well as average
miles driven per trip. My car s sleek design is perfect as far as safety goes. I was rear ended once
and with the exception of the bumper the car was in perfect condition. The airbags deployed as
expected and I was safe that time. The car has also never left me stranded which is more than I can
say for a previous car that I had. My car represents a compliment to my style as a person. I like cars
that are fast, have a nice sleek look and provide a good service. My car gives me that service and
that look that I crave and enjoy. The car does have a V6 engine which makes it a bit hard on gas
but not as hard as other cars. I love the car because even after 5 years it still looks impressive on
the road and it still works impressively. Whenever I take out I am amazed at how well the engine
responds as if it were new. Part of what makes this car my favorite is the road trips. I take my care
on extended trips to places like Tampa, St. Augustine, and Ft. Lauderdale. I love the handling
because the steering wheel is soft and smooth. One particular road trip that makes this car my

Dominican Women
Title: Important Women in the Dominican Republic and their Stories. Women in the Dominican
Republic are treated the exact same way that women in the
United States are treated. In the earlier centuries, Dominican women were known to be housewives,
women that were trained to serve their husband and have children to carry their last names. Iconic
women in the Dominican Republic can be traced back to the independence of the Republic.
However, literature on iconic women from the Dominican Republic is not available and very
limited.
Women like MarГa Trinidad Sanchez, an activist affiliated with the founder Juan Pablo Duarte and
La Trinitaria society, involved in the independence of the Dominican Republic. Salome UreГ±a de
HenrГquez, a poet and educational queen of her era, who influenced women throughout the country
and provided women in the country with the first higher education school in the country. Other
women like, Concepcion Bona HernГЎndez whom was the woman who made the last stitches on
the scared flag of the Dominican Republic in 1844.

men. However, the same thing has occurred in multiple countries ... Show more content on

Dominicans can be really difficult because the books that have been created on the women leaders
are not available in English but only in Spanish. In comparison to using the web, library or anything
of that matter to search the simple words Pedro Santana , Trujillo , and history of the Dominican

The Fear of Child Soldiers in 3rd World Countries
Child Soldiers How would you feel if your child was forcibly abducted from your home to be a
soldier, and back in return you got 5$? This is one of the biggest fears for families in third world
countries. Children are being used as soldiers, servants , and slaves against their will. Child
soldiers has become a highly debated issue, due to the high popularity of Joseph Kony. Child
soldiers is unfortunately accepted usually because of the economic needs of families needs to
survive in poverty. Child warfare is a big problem today in the world. This is a big problem
because children are getting taken away from their families and just getting pulled into the war
and have to kill or they get beaten or killed if they put the kids in the front line to get killed
before the high ranks. In the world there are approximately 300,000 child soldiers around the
world. About 40% of the child soldiers are in their countries rank in the military. 40% of them
are girls. This mainly happens in Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan. This
happens because the military does not want their high ranked soldiers to die, so they put the
child soldiers in the front line to die before the high ranked soldiers die. Also if the children don t
kill in the battle they get beaten with batons and even get killed with guns, knives, or sticks. Then
they get hung on a pole to show the people it s a sign of glory to the people that kill them. The
African officials are making the kids go through

Cause And Effect Of Kidnapping
Kidnapping is a global and historic issue all around the world, and although government is doing
all that they can to ensure that kidnappers are captured and punished, the numbers are steal
increasingly high. Kidnapping is abducting and holding anybody captive. There are many
causes of kidnapping, among them are unemployment, poverty, religion, and so on. The rate of
kidnapping in North America is attracting the attention of people all over the globe. Some people
have even taken it as their business. The disappearance of children in the United States is not
unheard of, either, and it is one of the things that the security in our country is working on.
According to National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Roughly 800,000 children are
reported missing each year in the U.S. The act of kidnapping has made so many people lose their
reasoning, like why would someone do this? It is just wrong. As of December 31, 2016, according
to the FBI s NCIC, there are 88,040 active missing personrecords, and children under the age of 18
account for 33,706 (38.3%) of the records. NISMART 12 reported that from the years 1997 to
1999, of the 797,500 children missing in a one year span, 203, 900 were abducted by family
members and 58,200 were abducted by non relatives; 118,000 were classified as being taken by a
stranger. Reading those statistics blew my mind, honestly you can t even trust the same people you

Deception, Lying, And Other Cases
In Element 1, I will present some cases where deception is thought to be lying, and other cases
where deception is not thought to be lying. I will contend that, when deception is lying, it is
immoral and I will give reasons for why this is the case. After my presentation, I will take a look at
some possible criticisms of my arguments and then answer those criticisms. Then, I will present my
conclusions.
In Element 2, I will contend that people for whatever reason choose to lie about things in order to
persuade others into thinking that the truth is on their side. Lying takes a group of actions or
words that are clearly false to the perpetrator to try to bait someone into thinking that it is truthful.
When deceptions are thought to be lies, it can be a very eerie situation because the person that
was lied to did not get complete or enough adequate information of what was told. Yes, what
someone said may have been truthful, but not all of the information was being told. The person
receiving the information is left without additional pieces to the story although he or she does not
know this, which makes the person assume that what you said was the end all be all to the
situation. These situations can likely equate to being a lie because of the information that was
omitted. Once the person finds out that pieces of information was left out or incomplete, they will
feel like they were lied to. Because the rest of the information or story was not fulfilled, the person
can also be

Star Wars Attack Of The Clones Essay
If ever a film was regrettably viewed, it would be Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.
Regularly regarded as the worst in the series, Clones holds the title for most wooden acting, bad
writing, unwanted CGI, and awkward moments ever seen in big budget sci fi. Even the action, as
extensive it was, had a lack of thrill, simply because the human variant relied too heavily on their
CGI partner. However, the filmis canon. We witness Anakin carve himself a path that will lead to
his inevitable end in the Dark Side; a forbidden romance of Jedi and Senator. We see the story that
brings about the beginnings of Luke and Leia. Narratively, this movie is important, but viewing

Either due to the acting or the writing, Anakin Skywalker wasn t done well. First, old Ben
Kenobi said to a young Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: A New Hope, He was a good friend , yet,
in Attack of the Clones Anakin continuously flips between rejecting Obi Wan and relying on the
man as a father figure, saying, It s all Obi Wan s fault. He s jealous. He s holding me back ,
leaving a rather frustrated and strained relationship in their wake (Anakin). The boy has a
misguided view on his own importance, believing that his status alone as the Chosen One should
be enough for him to be placed high in the ranks in the Jedi Order. Thus, this gives Anakin the
reasoning that he is above the Jedi s rules. His romance with Senator Padme Amidala, questionable
at best, stems from the resentment he holds for his fellow Jedi. Where are the parallels between
Anakin and Vader? In the Original trilogy, Obi Wan showed admiration towards the Jedi that was
Anakin Skywalker, but this is not the cunning warrior that Old Ben described to Luke. In Attack of
the Clones Anakin s fall was painfully obvious, as it was written, acted, and directed

  • 2. The Things They Carried By Tim O Brien Essay Summary: By and large they carried these things inside, maintaining the masks of composure (21). In Tim O brien s The Things They Carried, the American soldiers of the Vietnam War carry much more than the weight of their equipment, much more than souvenirs or good luck charms or letters from home. They carried within themselves the intransitive burdens of fear, of cowardice, of love, of loneliness, of anger, of confusion. Most of all, they carry the truth of what happened to them in the war a truth that only those who fought in the jungles and the mountains and the marshes of Vietnam can ever understand. These men can share their stories; but all that s all they are to everyone else: stories. The Things They Carried is a story made up of stories about how the men carried their war stories and their truths during the war and after the war. Personal Response: This was another novel that I had been wanting to read for a long time, and I was glad to have an excuse to buy and read it. This book made me feel emotions so deep that I was in the novel, that I was in Vietnam with Tim O Brien and Jimmy Cross, and at the end I was there with Ted Lavender and Linda. As soon as I finished the last word of the last sentence on the last page, I wanted to get in my car and drive to Texas. I just wanted to be in his presence and soak up his mastery of words. I wanted to hear his truths. I just wanted to know him (I still do). I felt his words in my heart in a way that not even real ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Rhetorical Analysis Of Lou Gehrig s Farewell Speech Professional baseball player, Lou Gehrig, in his speech, Farewell to Baseball Address, sheds light on his baseball career and why it was coming to an abrupt end. Gehrig s purpose was not to be distraught about him getting diagnosed with ALS, but instead send a message to not take anything for granted and be thankful for everything that happens. He adopts a thankful tone by showing how humble he is to have played the game of baseball with many great people thus using grateful terminology for his teammates and associates and reassuring terminology for baseball fans who were worried about him and his fatal disease. Gehrig appeals to ethos in his farewell speech by explaining to his audience how lucky he feels about who he was able to play... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without the usage of pathos, Gehrig s farewell speech wouldn t have been nearly as effective with his audience and the audience that would hear his speech or read his speech at a later time. Without pathos, it would ve just been another professional sport players retirement speech. Many key elements contributed to the emotional appeal of Gehrig s speech; first, he was finally addressing the reason why he was retiring from baseball, which was because of a life threatening disease known as ALS. Always regarded as one who could pull through anything, Gehrig finally made it clear through this speech that battling this disease was going to be the hardest battle yet and it would prevent him continuing to do what he loved which was play baseball. Nevertheless, Gehrig did not wish to evoke sadness out of his audience, throughout his speech, he sought to give hope over despair, thankfulness over pity, and humbleness over self righteousness. It was so important that he displayed these emotions because then he would contrast to the ideals that many American people had come to believe. Also throughout the speech Gehrig did not seek sympathy from his situation; in fact, he did not once mention his disease specifically and rather focused on the positive moments that he had experienced throughout his life. Hence, people connected to this speech because here was a man who had experienced hardship upon hardship and yet still ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When living in a small town, people see a familiar face wherever they go and know the history and character behind these individuals. Life in a small town can lack options for entertainment at times; some may even categorize it as dull . Yet, anyone can see that Grover s Corners, the town written about in Our Town, and Colby, Kansas contain a life full of personality and charm. The citizens of Grover s Corners live a basic life throughout the majority of the play. The play portrays daily life, loveand marriage, and how delicate life can amount to. The life lived today in Colby compared with Grover s Corners depicts several similarities as well as differences. Each person in the small town lives a simple life that meets their basic needs: working, their political philosophy and their religious affiliation. In Act I, the Lady in a Box quizzes Mr. Webb about the culture of the community. The playwright expresses this through Mr. Webb saying, Well, ma am, there ain t much not in the sense you mean (Wilder 17). This means the townspeople don t attend elaborate concerts, but enjoy simple pleasures such as the playing of a piano at local events. • 5. Transformity Vs Conformity What do these texts suggest about the conflict between pursuing a personal desire and choosing to conform? Support your idea(s) with reference to one or more of the texts presented and to your previous knowledge and/or experience. Sacrifice Praise for Self Success From a young age, children are told to by their parents to Be yourself in all circumstances. They are told that if they stay true to themselves, then they will have true friends, they will be content, and they will be successful. This lesson is taught much, but seldom followed. Most people have the desire to follow their own path, but the motivation is lacking to sacrifice what is expected and therefore, many conform. The texts The Jackhammer Syndrome and The Orchid Thief address this idea, introducing the conflict that there is between conformity and personal fulfillment, suggesting that, to follow one s own desires is the difficult path, but it is the path that leads to true prosperity. For someone to pursue their desires requires them to sacrifice self consciousness of what other people think of the way they re living their life. Living life in order to please others is an extreme waste of potential. In, The Orchid Thief, John Laroche sacrificed his chance to become a surgeon in order to live a more simple life and pursue his countless passions. Laroche was given the nicknames Troublemaker and Crazy White Man , and was often referred to as eccentric. Although often labelled in a negative way, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This essay aims at briefly explaining the key components of Hart s theory while constantly comparing and contrasting his propositions with those of his predecessors, Bentham and Austin as the former quintessentially flows from Hart s aim, the one of providing the world of Jurisprudence with an improved analysis of some of the earlier proposed correlation between law, morality and coercion. The setting where the poem had taken place is what had drawn me in from the get go. What s more thrilling than an enchanting gothic castle, twisting hallways, the concept forbidden love being tossed around, medieval feasts, bloodlust dating back all the way to ancient times? I felt as if I was traveling through time each page I had turned. The initial part of the poem had major Romeo and Juliet characteristics with Keats giving Porphyro and Madeline s families a rivalry, but never actually telling his readers how they got it. Personally, I felt like we really weren t able to grasp how these two kids even got together either or what their relationship is really like. Instead, Keats relied heavily on the star crossed lovers kept apart by the family feud motif to get his readers to vividly fill in the blanks. Nevertheless, Porphyro is a jerk. He turned out to not be the romantic hero I initially had perceived him to be. My dumb, naive, and sappy heart thought it was adorable that he strategized this plan to run away with his girlfriend, the alleged love of his life, who had also happened to be part of the bloodline that is in rivalry with his. Since the September 11th terrorists attacks, President Bush attempted several times to revoke the writ of habeas corpus. An example would be denying the detainees of Guantanamo Bay habeas corpus by granting him the power to be able to revoke habeas corpus for all citizens. By passing the Military Commissions Act of 2006, habeas corpus was eliminated by allowing non citizen enemy combatants to be held indefinitely in a military prison without access to a lawyer (The Rutherford Institute). Since that time the denial of habeas corpus has been challenged. Habeas Corpus and the War on Terror After the terrorist s attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, the Bush administration launched the war on terror. Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar The works of Sylvia Plath have always been at least slightly controversial; most of them have themes of feminism, suicide, or depression. Plath was born in 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts, and by the age of twelve she was reported to have had an IQ of about 160 (Kelly). Growing up in an age in which women were expected to be nothing more than conservative housemaids, Plath stood defiant against the views of society, choosing to expose any misogynistic prejudices or hateful prospects against mental illness through her writings (Allen). Perhaps the most famous work of Sylvia Plath s is The Bell Jar a book that follows the mental deterioration of a nineteen year old girl named Esther through the narration of Esther herself. Although Sylvia Plath hated life in general and committed suicide at the age of 32 after her husband left her, the myriad autobiographical elements, metaphors, and motifs that appear throughout her works produce a beautifully vivid representation of people, the world, and life itself ( Sylvia Plath ). In the first half of the book, Esther is fascinated by the medical practices of her boyfriend, Buddy, as well as by current events in the newspapers and the thought of her own future family. As the story progresses, however, Esther becomes indifferent about life, and she develops bitterness toward everything that appears to prevent her from achieving things she wants (Huf). What Is The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People Eric Salas Professor Gamboa BA240 03 Covey Paper Habits come in many forms and they may be good, bad or just in between and not really matter. It could be positive thinking, blaming yourself or something as simple as forgetting to turn off the lights. Stephen Covey defines habits as the intersection of knowledge, skill and desire. In his book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People , he shares a couple of habits that can lead an individual to personal and professional success. Out of the seven habits, I feel that the first three which are being proactive, beginning with the end in mind and putting first things first are the most fundamental habits to paving the road for becoming a better individual and manager. Being proactive means to take action and be responsible. Covey expresses that Highly proactive people recognize responsibility. They do not blame circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. (Covey). In accordance with Covey s idea of being proactive, many people do not want to assume responsibility. As an individual, something that is really important about being proactive is being able to accept ambiguity. Project manager objective is to deliver the software that not only meets the time and cost requirements but also the quality requirements given by the client. To ensure the quality of the software, many testing cycle will be conducted before it is finally delivered to the client for acceptance. Each testing cycle is a costly affair as it involves running all possible test scenarios in all possible environments, followed by defect fixing and re verification of defects. On average, there are 2 3 testing cycle conducted but this depends on number of defects identified during testing. Number of defects will depend on the team expertise and whether they earlier worked on similar projects and technologies. Some proteins are to be synthesized using mammalian cells rather than the commonly used microbial cells as the latter lacks the exact machinery to produce the complete protein or for safety concerns. Among the mammalian cells, CHO cells continue to be the choice for the production of several therapeutic proteins. The large scale production of therapeutic proteins in industries is done in suspension culture as the adherent cell line poses a challenge in scaling up. • 41. Alienation And Anomie Essay Both concepts of alienation and anomie signify how individualism has impacted the social structures through industrialization and the division of labour. Both Marx and Durkheim s theories emphasize the relationships between people in society and how this impacts on separateness and individualism within it; however, both theories are different. Where Marx is concerned he focuses on being alienated as a result of materialized matter through the bourgeoisie alienating oneself from culture, for Durkheim anomie is due to the lack of a collective conscience within society preventing both regulation and integration of culture; for Durkheim this negatively impacts on social solidarity and cohesion. Alienation occurred after the periods of slavery and serfdom arose a capitalist society, workers selling their labour skills in order to earn a living wage. In comparison to feudal societies where wealth was inherited, capitalist societies through the bourgeoisie was about owning the means of production enabling them to own private property and this being wealth. However, the cost price of the goods produced was significantly higher than the labourer s wages resulting in a profit for the bourgeoisie, this being the method of attaining wealth. The capitalist mode of production generates its wealth through exploitation of the proletariat. • 42. Cultural Relativism And Its Impact On The World Cultural relativism is the idea that all cultures are equal and no one is better than another. This way of thinking was created and elaborated on by three main philosophers. Franz Boas, Alain Locke and Robert Lowie were nineteenth century philosophers who shaped the ideas on concepts of Cultural Relativism. These three men focused on the idea that one cannot judge other cultures because they only see through eyes that have been influenced by their surroundings. They used relativist ideas that existed already and expressed them on the world and the many different cultures that exist in it. They created a mainly atheistic viewpoint in which the idea of a central moral truth and a higher power was discounted. Only the people within a culturecould create moral codes and laws for themselves. Franz Boas was born on July 19, 1858 in Minden, Germany. Boas grew up in a well educated family and was encouraged to follow his own beliefs and think for himself. From a very young age, Franz Boas was interested in natural history and studied it throughout his years of schooling. He continued his studies and graduated with a degree in physics, even though he considered himself more of a geographer than a physicist. This interest in geography is what drove him to delve deeper into the ideas of cultural difference and led to the beginnings of cultural relativism. Through his studies, Franz Boas became drawn to anthropology, the study of humankind. He became interested in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Self Reflection Paper I was a quiet child growing up; not necessarily shy, but introverted. Now, I consider myself an extroverted introvert. Growing up, I probably didn t come across as a leader. My kindergarten teacher wrote in my assessment that I was shy; I didn t speak up enough for myself when I was bullied throughout my elementary school years, and I probably stood in the shadows more than I realized throughout middle school. I could have been more decisive during high school. A person doesn t become a leader overnight; I didn t. I began speaking up more because I was done with my silence. • 49. Deception, Lying, And Other Cases In Element 1, I will present some cases where deception is thought to be lying, and other cases where deception is not thought to be lying. I will contend that, when deception is lying, it is immoral and I will give reasons for why this is the case. After my presentation, I will take a look at some possible criticisms of my arguments and then answer those criticisms. Then, I will present my conclusions. In Element 2, I will contend that people for whatever reason choose to lie about things in order to persuade others into thinking that the truth is on their side. Lying takes a group of actions or words that are clearly false to the perpetrator to try to bait someone into thinking that it is truthful. When deceptions are thought to be lies, it can be a very eerie situation because the person that was lied to did not get complete or enough adequate information of what was told. Yes, what someone said may have been truthful, but not all of the information was being told. The person receiving the information is left without additional pieces to the story although he or she does not know this, which makes the person assume that what you said was the end all be all to the situation. These situations can likely equate to being a lie because of the information that was omitted.
