Plato And The Euthyphro Dilemma
Siddhanth Goyal
Does morality stem from God? Or does it exist independently of his presence, not subject to
arbitrary decisions? The first discussion over these questions appeared in Plato s Euthyphro, in
which Plato chronicles the proceedings of a highly repetitive argument between Socrates and
Euthyphro, a prophet and holy man, over the nature of piety and holiness. The questions produced
in this dialogue have been expanded to remain relevant even in a modern religious context. It has
achieved so much fame that the core question presented in this dialogue is now known as the
Euthyphro Dilemma. In the dialogue, Socrates presents Euthyphro with a choice, Is what is holy

According to this theory, there are no moral standards that exist without God s will, and without his
commands, nothing would be right or wrong. God is omnipotent, and therefore, morality itself is
derived from God s nature. Without God, there is no basis for our moral structure and under this,
what is moral is so because God has decreed it as such.
This theory would stress the complete sovereignty of God s will, and the concept that morality
exists based not on reason, or any logical basis, but simply due to the arbitrary nature of God s
commands. This theory proposes that there is no rationale, moral or immoral, behind divine
commands, and hence renders both his commands and morality subject to his whims. On this
theory, God could have commanded, for example, for one to kill an innocent child, and it would
have been mandatory for a person to do it. Abhorrent acts, or ones we would consider as such, are
automatically pious, simply because God has decreed it, though many, including those who might
be inclined to side with the this theory, would agree that they are abhorrent. The theory also rules
out the option of assuming that God is just an agent of morality, not its progenitor, leaving the
devotee with a puzzling quandary.
On the other hand, rejecting the divine command theory, and accepting that moral principles exist
independently of divine

Institutional Review Board
Institutional Review Boards are tasked with carrying out two main forms of review: initial review
and continuing review; they are indispensable to the review process for protecting human
participants. Initial review of an experiment occurs before it is approved. Coleman remarks, This
review encompasses the research protocol, the informed consent documents to be signed by
subjects, any advertisements to be used in recruiting subjects, and other relevant documents
(Coleman et al. 169). The informed consent document is vital for the review; it is the required
document which supplies all research participants with necessary information to give informed
consent. Institutional Review Boards also utilize continuous review, which is done over the... Show

The HHS is required to oversee IRBs in order to ensure that they are functioning properly.
Institutional Review Boards cannot function properly without being overseen by the HHS, and
therefore lack of oversight would lead to weakened protection of human participants. An
Institutional Review Board may not fulfill its purpose without the HHS s close oversight. Two
agencies within the Department of Health and Human Services, the Office for Protection from
Research Risks (OPRR) and the FDA, are both tasked with reviewing IRBs. The OPRR utilizes an
assurance document to oversee how IRBs are functioning. All IRBs using HHS funding must have
an assurance document on file with the OPRR. Coleman adds, The assurance is a written statement
of an institution s requirements for its IRB and human subject protections (Coleman et al. 170).
Meanwhile, FDA uses research investigators to determine whether IRBs are functioning in an
effective manner. The OPRR and the FDA share the task of oversight of IRBs, and do so through
documentation and research investigators respectively. Without this system of review, Institutional
Review Boards would not be checked by any part of government, and thus would have free reign to
do as they please. Thus, the interests of human participants

Thomas Haitian Revolution Analysis
Shady Kamel
Second Revolutions: Thomas Jefferson and Haiti Beginning in 1789, France s political landscape
was completely transformed by the chaotic bloodshed that resulted from the country s absolute
monarchy and feudal system. Backing the United States in the American Revolution left France on
the verge of bankruptcy, but the Revolution also lay as a precedent for the French to follow soon
after. Impacted by the rising enlightenment ideology of inalienable rights, the French depicted the
strength of the will of the people and successfully altered the government to better suit the needs of
its citizens. Simultaneously, France influenced the rise of another revolution one that would alter
society and the social constructs that society revolves around the Haitian Revolution. Professor
James Alexander Dun argues, however, that the term revolution is not used as a noun in this
instance, and is in fact used as an adjective to further illustrate its descriptiveness and uniqueness to
the situation. He believes that a revolution is constituted by a certain series of events , but that the
Haitian revolution is more complex than this. Professor Dun s conclusion that a revolution shouldn
t be viewed as a thing, but rather, should be looked upon as a description is a fascinating assertion
as it challenges conventional thinking, and tailors the term to any particular event such as with
France and Haiti. This reasoning expands upon the words adaptability and was necessary

Examples Of Post Colonialism In Things Fall Apart
The novel Things Fall apart is a post colonial novel written by Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe in
1958, before Nigerian sovereignty. The novel portrays the life of Okonkwo, an Ibo head and local
wrestle champion in Nigerian village of Umuofia. The novel is divided into three parts, the first
parts talks about his family and personal history, the customs and society of the Ibo, and the second
and third sections introduce the influence of British colonialismand Christian missionaries on the
Ibo community during the late 1800s. Achebe provides the examples of post colonialism through
the symbolic representations of the colonizers, the introduction of their new religion, the creation of
their own government, and explains how the colonizers have caused them to diverge from their
original traditions and cultures.

Cognitive Bias In The Los Angeles Police Department
Back in the late 1990 s the Los Angeles Police Department was hit by a scandal in which police
officers in the Rampart division were accused of various crimes which ranged from planting
evidence, perjury, filing false police reports and physical abuse of innocent victims and other
crimes. The officers involved were in a special gang task force called CRASH (community
resources against street hoodlums) which was created to combat gang related activity and crime
in LAPD areas. It was a major scandal because police officers are held to a higher moral standard
they are expected to not only uphold the law but abide by it as well. Cognitive bias is a systematic
error in thinking that affects the decisions and judgments that people make. (Cherry) This scandal
shows how cognitive bias has played out with not only the officers who committed the crimes but
also by the detectives led the investigation and the chief of police himself.
The first incidence occurred in 1997 when undercover LAPD officer Lyga shot and killed
Gaines an off duty officer. Lyga did not know Gaines was a police officer and feared for his life
because Gaines was threatening him with a gun in a road rage incidence. This case garnered
attention because a white officer shot and killed a black officer. What was discovered during this
investigation was that off duty police officers were providing security services for renowned gang
member Suge Knight and his record label Death Row Records. The detective at the time

To A Mouse Allusion
Human beings and animals are both equal because we breathe the same air, walk the same land,
and whether you re an animal or a man your plans are prone to be thrown of track. In the short
classic novel Of Mice and Men the author John Steinbeck tells the story of two friends, Lennie
Small and George Milton. They are migrant ranch workers who move around California in
search of jobs in order to achieve their dream. Their dream is to own their own piece of land. Yet
due to Lennie s disability, he gets into big trouble and their dream is demolished. George is a
smart man who is Lennie s guardian and best friend. Lennie is a very strong man but he has an
unknown mental disability. Lennie has the urge to feel soft objects but anytime he does they die.

Chocolate Syrup and Milk
Introduction: We were testing the solubility of the chocolate syrup brands while being stirred in
whole milk. Our purpose is to see which of the major brands of syrup is most soluble and for
what reason. This is important to our daily lives because it makes us aware of what types of
materials we are ingesting and this applies to our experiment by seeing which of the ingredients
take longer to dissolve. Information known is all brands are known to dissolve in milk but they all
use different ingredients and they will cause a difference in the time it takes to dissolve. New
information that will be gained from this experiment is which ingredients inside chocolate syrup
will take the longest to dissolve, from the type of sugars in it to the syrups. We expected the
Nesquik to dissolve the fastest because it did not contain any high fructose corn syrupwhile the
other brand of syrup did. Also we observed from the syrups that nesquik was very thin, while the
others were very thick and slow in behaviour. Our hypothesis is that the Nesquik will disintegrate
the fastest in the milk because it lacks High Fructose Corn Syrup.

The Effects Of Mediocrity On Work Performance
INTRODUCTION Health Net s Appeals and Grievances Department is currently experiencing
the effects of mediocrity on work performance. These effects can be due to any number of
issues. What is perceived as mediocrity by one person may be perceived as a result of stress by
another, since everyone perceives situations differently. This can be debilitating to employees
and be costly to employers. Managers need to identify those suffering from negative stress and
implement restructuring as a defense against mediocrity and stress. This may reduce the impact
stress has on employees work performance. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The purpose of
this study was to determine the negative effects of mediocrity, complacency and stress on
employees and the methods that Health Nets Appeals and Grievance (A G) Department can
manage employees stress. Health Net should be able to meet reporting guidelines for settling
appeals and grievances. According to California state regulations, we must notify members of our
decision about their grievance and/or as quickly as the case requires based on the member s health
status, but no later than 30 calendar days after receiving the complaint. We may extend the
timeframe by up to 14 calendar days if you request for the extension, or if we justify a need for
additional information and the delay is in your best interest. Unfortunately, at this time, our
department is currently struggling to comply with case closures cases within regulatory compliance

Themes In Fallen Angels, Girl In The Green Sweater And A...
All authors use literary devices as intrical parts of their story. Literary devices can include
symbolism, motif, theme, mood and more. They all are used to do the same thing; to enhance the
reader s experience and the development of the story. For instance, in the stories Fallen Angels, Girl
in The Green Sweater, and A Thousand Splendid Suns their authors all use theme as literary devices
to furtherly write the story. The themes are loss of innocence, fear, and the suppression of women.
In the end, all of these authors use unique, realistic themes throughout their story.
To begin, the story Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers has a very common theme. This theme
used is the loss of innocence. In other words, it is when time passes and someone starts to grow
up, they start to realize that nothing is perfect. Also, it is usually thought of as an experience or
period in a child s life that widens their awareness of evil, pain, or suffering in the world around
them. The story Fallen Angels takes place during the Vietnam War. The main character, Richie
Perry, decides to join the war. He is only seventeen; with that being said, the theme of losing
innocence fit perfect with this novel because all of the characters are still young and as they go
through war, they understand what life is really like. The novel explains the loss of innocence
only within a squad of soldiers fighting in Vietnam, Perry being one of them. Lastly, Walter Dean
Myers used theme in a very interesting way. His theme was occurred only in a certain group of
characters as the story moved on and on.
To continue, the themes in the story Girl in The Green Sweater by Krystyna Chiger and Daniel
Paisner was fright and loss of innocence, as well. The overall novel was written in Krystyna s
point of view of a small town of Jews surviving the Holocaust. Krysha, her family, and some of
the other families within the small town of Lvov snuck into the underground sewers to hide from
the Nazis. Chiger explained that they lived in the dark, with floods, fires, sicknesses, and death.
They were always fearful that they would be discovered. They hid their for 14 months. Before the
Nazis started capturing Jews Krysha believed the world was exactly how she

Comparing The Time Period Of Joseph Hansberry s The Sun
As you begin to compare the time period in which A Raisin in the Sun was written, the 1950s, and
now, you can find many similarities and differences regarding racial equality in the Chicagoland,
even more specifically the south side. The Younger family, deriving from the African American
descent, in Lorraine Hansberry s play, has trouble finding happiness when they are surrounded by
successful white people, while they are stuck living in a two bedroom apartment and struggle to
make ends meet. In the 1950s, it was much harder for African Americans to find jobs where they
could make a substantial living to provide for their families, but in today s society the opportunities
for the black racehave improved immensely, although a problem with their pay grade still persists.
On the other hand, the two time periods are similar in the respect that the environment on the
Southside of Chicago today is very similar to what it was like almost 60 years ago. Additionally,
just like in the play, police force continues to be an issue, whether that be because they favor a
certain race, or police brutality; shooting people with the wrong intentions. More problems that
exist today include, gang violence, protests, and segregated schools in the poorer black
communities. While the Chicagoland continues to struggle with problems regarding racial equality,
they have made many improvements such as the development of organizations to keep children off
of the streets and out of trouble as well as

Edward Kennedy Ellington Research Paper
Great American Composers
Over the course of history, the arts have played an important role in aspects of people s lives. More
specifically, music is something that has been around for centuries and will continue to play a part
in shaping people into who they are. There have been numerous talented composers in America, but
some worth mentioning are Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin.
Though music has been around for generations, during the 1900 s, Duke Ellington was a famous
composer in the Americas. Edward Kennedy Ellington was born on April 29, 1899 in Washington
D.C. to a religious family; his mother was a Baptist and his father was a Methodist ( Duke, n.d.).

He also won numerous Grammy Awards as well as the Spingarn Medal from the National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Ellington continued to compose
and perform music until he died from lung cancer in May of 1974. He will always be remembered
for the daring innovations that came to mark his music the strange modulations (changing from one
key to another) built upon lush melodies that ramble into unexpected places, the unorthodox
(untraditional) construction of songs.... ( Duke, n.d.).
Not only was Duke Ellington well known for his involvement in jazz during the 1900 s, George
Gershwin was also popular during that time. Gershwin was born in Brooklyn in 1898 to a family
of immigrants. He left school at the age of 15 in order to work as a song plugger (a pianist that
demonstrated songs) on Tin Pan Alley (Hingley, 2013). He soon began to write his own pieces,
and his first published song was When You Want Em, You Can t Get Em ; although this song was

Causes Of Csare Lombroso
Nowadays it is common to hear expressions like beware of that man, he has the face of a thief ;
These young people are suspicious, their appearance is deplorable, or because of that scar he
has, I would say he is a criminal. It is also often observed that certain types of people are still
rejected, isolated or labeled by society, due to their physical characteristics, because they have
congenital malformations, or they have been acquired during the course of their existence. It is not
good to judge by appearances, but there are people who at first sight seem dangerous to us. In the
nineteenth century, the scientist Cesare Lombrosodeveloped a theory that defines potential criminals
by some of their physical features.
Cesare Lombroso, a criminologist and Italian physicians, he was one of the forerunners of modern
criminology in that he may be born predisposed to be a criminal for biological causes. His legacy
is still present, although his studies and publications caused and continue to cause considerable
controversy. This Italian, who during his career published twenty five books that combine
biological science with criminology, was one of the most important exponents of criminological
positivism. It is a current that, instead of exposing sanctions for a certain act, is done for a
delinquent studying its characteristics, crime and manner of committing it in order to then seek a

Classical Influences On Modern Films And Literature
Vuong KhuatClassical influences on modern films and literature
Classical Greece and Rome were ancient civilizations that existed 2500 years ago, and are
regarded by numerous scholars as the foundation of humanities in various fields. In popular culture,
Ancient Greece and Rome are portrayed substantially in books and movies; however, not many
people are aware of how they also shape our thoughts, ideals, and motivations. Through an analysis
of classical elements often portrayed in popular media, this essay attempts to illustrate how the
representation of classical Greece and Rome in books and movies influence our lives and emphasize
the need to stay informed as these influences can be both beneficial and detrimental to our
perception of the world.
The way ancient culture can impact our ideals is demonstrated by various contemporary adaptations
of Greek mythology. For instance, in 1997, Walt Disney produced the animated movie Hercules,
based on stories about the legendary Greek hero who persevered through numerous labors and
challenges to eventually gained a place in Mount Olympus, the home of the gods. Hercules was
a major box office hit among children and had left a deep impression on how they perceive the
qualities of a hero. Similarly, the 2004 film Troy, based loosely on Homer s the Iliad, tells the
story of Achilles and the Trojan War. Troy was a critical success, grossing nearly 500 million
dollars worldwide. But the movie did not exhibit merely entertainment

The Suffragette Film Analysis
The Suffragette film presents a truthful recount of how women were perceived within society.
Throughout society, there was a belief that women do not need to represent their own self; rather
they have husbands that will represent their wives (Suffragette 2015). Women are often left in a
state of subordination because men are considered to be self centered and are only fully noticed
when a male is sexually attracted to her. As a result, women are perceived as sexual objects for the
male gender(Solarnis 1968, p.464). As mentioned previously, it was expected that women follow
their gender norms of caring for the children and husbandand not to stray away from this norm.
During the early 20th century, it has been stated that men have authoritative... Show more content

It is clear to see that the women acknowledged the gender inequalities within society and that
they should have a right to vote alongside men. The film follows Maud, who is the main
character, as she begins to take part in the Suffragette movement. Maud s Suffragette encounter
began when she was listening to Mrs Olton s speech, which was utilised in order to get women
to voice their struggles, and hope for change. At the time of the speech, Maud was working at the
laundry for Mr Taylor, who sexually, emotionally and physically abused the women who were
working there. Following Mrs Olton s speech, Maud was forced to give a statement to parliament
and she described working at the laundry for Mr Taylor. She stated that the women working in the
laundry received aches, chest coughs, crushed fingers, leg ulcers, burns, headaches, and sometimes,
poisoned (Suffragette 2015). Additionally, women were paid 13 shillings; whereas men were paid
19 shillings, even though women worked a third more of the hours (Suffragette 2015). Connell s
(1987, p.188) research of this time period portrays this truthfulness as he states that women were

Case Study Of ABNA AMRO
In 2007, ABN AMRO Holding NV was acquired by RFS, a consortium of banks comprising Royal
Bank of Scotland (RBS), Fortis Bank NV/SA, and Banco Santander. The acquisition talks were
initiated after a shareholder wrote a letter asking the CEO, Rijkman Groenink, and the supervisory

AMRO. The motivation was that the share price did not reflect the true value of the underlying

the audience were often portrayed throughout most of his scripts using various techniques, one of
these techniques being his use of one liners. One liners can be described as a witty remarks which

Emergency Contraceptive Pills ( Ecps )
Emergency Contraceptive Pills (ECPs) is a widely controversial debate between medical
officials, teachers, parents, and teens. Most parents do not want to think about their teenage
daughters engaging in sexual activities; yet, at some point, it is more than likely going to
happen. The CDC reports showed in 2013 there were over 270,000 babies born to adolescents
between the ages of 15 19 years old (1). This figure may seem high but has declined over the last
two decades and reduced by 10% during 2012 to 2013 (1). There are several methods of birth
controlto inhibit pregnancyand the spread of sexual transmitted infections (STI.) One form that
aids in preventing pregnancy is commonly known as the morning after plan or Plan B. For
females over the age of 15, the FDA has approved teens to buy the pills without a doctor s
prescription (1). Purchases can be made at various local pharmacy stores. The pills are taken
immediately after having unprotected sex, or after a woman believes, she may become pregnant
from sexual intercourse. Dr. Abell express the hormones progestin and estrogen are the same
hormones used in birth control pills (341). The pills work by either obstructing or delaying the
natural pregnancy process, but is not an abortion because a woman is not yet pregnant. If a
woman takes the pill and she is already pregnant there has been no evidence to prove the fertilized
egg will be harmed (Abell 341). To have the most effect the pills should be taken within

Through voice VARs? Data VARs? or both? I would recommend the distribution of VoIP
products through both voice and data VARs. Even though voice channel was considerably more
consolidated than the data channel however it is agreed that voice needed to be added to the

existing margin structure because the new technology delivered huge cost advantage for the end

to expand their business and needed to the keep the productivity with the existing data VARs. 4.

Distribution Channel Of Tata Motors

Distribution Channels
The distribution channel environment for automobiles in India is different from that of most
advanced countries. These differences exist in number of dealers, size and type of dealers,
functions of dealer, manufacturer dealer relationship, car supermarkets, vertical integration,
bookings, financing, number of cars sold per dealer, margins, and market environment. Because
customer has wide choice, most car dealers would have to adjust to the as per the need of the

Private Military Contractors In Vietnam War
In his 1960 Farewell Address, former President Dwight D. Eisenhower brought attention to the
military industrial complex , a term that is used to describe how the government uses private
industry to meet its various demands during war or peace. Since World War I and World War II, the
United States has witnessed a greater connection between the public and private sectors as private
industry pumped out the goods to keep the government and country going. Similarly, there were
changes on the battlefield as now private contractors became common sights. Eventually, the

Car Warranty
If your car had a warranty when you purchased it, it probably gave you some peace of mind. The
warranty might have even helped encourage you to purchase the car that you chose. Therefore,
the last thing that you probably want is to find out that your warranty is not valid later on when
you need it. For example, some people end up voiding their car warranties without even realizing
it. These are a few tips that can help you avoid issues with your car s warranty, however.
1. Keep Up With Your Car s Maintenance Schedule
For one thing, your car should have a manufacturer specific car maintenance schedule that lists
when you are supposed to have certain maintenance tasks done, such as changing the oil or flushing
out the fluids and replacing them. Some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This might be required by your warranty. Plus, someone who has experience in working with your
type of car can be more likely to be competent and to do a great job with the maintenance and
repairs of your vehicle.
3. Make Sure You Use OEM Parts
Another thing that you might be required to do in order to maintain your car s warranty is to
replace any parts that are faulty with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts. Even though
you might sometimes be able to save some money by choosing aftermarket parts instead of OEM
parts, you ll probably find that it s not worth the potential cost savings when it could put you in
jeopardy of voiding your car s warranty.
Luckily, in most cases, it s not too difficult to maintain your car s warranty. If you follow these
tips, you shouldn t have anything to worry about. Of course, different car warranties do vary, so
if you have any specific questions about your vehicle, it s a good idea to check your warranty
information or to contact your dealer or a certified mechanic who has experience in working on

Analyzing Database Management Systems ( Dbms ) Come Into Play
Analyzing Database Management Systems Data. It is all around every person on this earth
whether they realize it or not. Throughout each and everyone s life they collect data and have
their data collected by others. Height, weight, shopping habits, health history are all examples of
data that is tracked. The question is what is done with this data? People, companies, even the
government analyze the data they collect and analyze it with hope of discovering new
information. How they do this is particularly interesting and opens the door for a larger
discussion. In the world of computer science large groups of data that are collected are referred to
as databases. When there is a multitude of these databases, a way to manage all of this information
is needed. That is where database management systems (DBMS) come into play. A database
management systemis a collection of programs that enables users to create and maintain a database.
The DBMS is a general purpose software system that facilitates the processes of defining,
constructing, manipulating, and sharing databases among various users and applications [1].
Analyzing these database managements systems could potentially have huge benefits since
companies could determine when and where to sell products, track certain trends, and possibly
predict future outcomes. Two popular ways to analyze these large amounts of data are OLAP,
online analytical processing tools and/or data mining. According to Oracle, one of the

Traditional Voting In America

The Child Protective Services ( Cps )
The Child protective services (CPS) is formed of social workers who are the forefront of its
community s child protections efforts. In recent years, according to Scanlon et Harding, while
the profession of social work and the labor movement have moved in different directions since
the post WW2 era, recent events, such as the dominance of managed care and cuts in
government financing, have led social workers to rediscover unions as potential political and
workplace allies (Scanlon et Harding, 2004). So, in this paper, we will evaluate the practicality
of unions presence in CPS, and made some recommendations. Then, we will evaluate the
opportunity of privatization and why the CPS should or should not privatize its services. Also,
we will analyses some of the agency policies, procedures and/or plan regarding pensions, assess

South Korea s order of preference among the choices are:
1. unification under a democratic system,
2. peaceful unification
3. the status quo,
4. unification under a communist system.
What can be said about these four outcomes as they apply to the Prisoner s Dilemma? First, neither
North nor South Korea sees the status quo as the worst choice. Second, each side sees the
opponents most desired outcome as its worst possible outcome. Third, each side prefers a peaceful

The Into The Woods Movie Trailer
The Into the Woods movie trailer is a modern twist on the favorite fairy tales Cinderella, Little
Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel. These plots, which derive from several
classic Brothers Grimm fairy tales, are linked together by an original tale involving a baker and
his infertile wife and their journey to start a family. The trailer is a preview of the 2014 film that
is produced by Disney and is based off the musical by Stephen Sondheim. Nowadays, American
society commonly relates the definition of traditional fairy tales to the later revisions of the Grimm
Brother s tales and Walt Disney s numerous fairy taleretellings. Solheim is an American playwright,
and within Into the Woods he takes classic fairy tale establishments and displays them in a new
light. Although Disney is usually associated with the traditional fairy tales, their production of the
movie Into the Woods reveals an attempt to branch into more complex stories. All fairy tales are
stories of transformation. Traditionally, classic fairy tales highlight static characters who are only
altering their circumstances; on the contrary, today s postmodern fractured or distorted fairy tales
involve dynamic characters who experience multidimensional transformations. By analyzing the
character complexity that Into the Woods and similar modern tales explore, one can specifically

Douglass and President Lincoln agreed that slavery needed to be abolished and the Nation
needed to be united as one. Lincoln realized that he needed to bring in Frederick Douglass; the
combination of a strong and influential black leader and the President of the United States could
now create a cohesive group of abolitionists and the Union. Frederick Douglass realized that
President Lincoln s own personality and political judgment would help him free slaves across the

Rhetorical Devices In The Great Influenza By John Barry
What is scientific research without competent scientists? John M. Barry s The Great Influenza,
characterizes scientific research as a commendable venture. Barry uses rhetorical strategies such as
repetition, compelling diction, and vivid imagery. These tactics aid the reader s comprehension of
the author s purpose. The purpose is to convince readers that scientists require certain traits to
overcome the challenges of scientific research. The passage in reference suggests that John M.
Barry holds scientists in high regard. The use of repetition in the passage from The Great
Influenza emphasizes the admirable work of scientists and enhances the overall praising tone. The
courage of successful scientists is referred to several times throughout the passage. In lines 8 to
10, the author s use of the word uncertain in consecutive sentences with anaphora can be linked to
the repetition of the word courage in lines 9 to 10. The eager acceptance of uncertainty leads to

Therefore, they wouldn t become defenseless to be like people in the media. They wouldn t get

kids away from Pit bulls they meet, but then they let their kid go towards other breeds of dogs
and the reason they do this is because of the negative way they have seen Pit bulls portrayed. My
Pit bull was able to disprove these false assumptions made on his breed by proving to people that
where you come from doesn t define you, but how you treat people does. In fact, he was so kind to
people that sometimes it would shock them because they thought Pit bulls were supposed to be this
vicious breed that could not be controlled.
Hopefully my personal experience has been able to shine a positive light on Pit bulls and shown
that when it comes down to a dog their breed shouldn t define them because a dog is just a
reflection of their owner and if a Pit bull is treated correctly they won t randomly lash out at their
owner, but will be loyal and protective to the

Desiree s Baby by Kate Chopin Essay
Imagine finding out that your entire life was a lie, and that every single thing you knew about
your identity and your family was completely false! Armand Aubigny, one of the main characters
in Desiree s Baby by Kate Chopin, experiences this exact dilemma throughout this short story.
Desiree s Baby is a story about a young man and woman, who fall in love, but Desiree, who does
not know her birth parents, is considered nameless. When she and Armand have a child, they are
both very surprised because the child s skin color is not white as expected. It is obvious that the
child is biracial, and immediately, Desiree is blamed for the color of the child s skin because of her
uncertain background. The truth, however, is that it is Armand who has... Show more content on

He shows his passionate love for Desiree when he states It was no wonder, when she stood one
day against the stone pillar I whose shadow she has lain asleep, eighteen years before, that
Armand Aubigny riding by and seeing her there, had fallen in love with her. (Madden 947 )
According to the narrator all of the Aubigny s fell victim to the love at first sight theory! Chopin
brilliantly explains the ways of the Aubigny men by writing that was the way the Aubigny s fell
in love, as if struck by a pistol shot (Madden 947) The reader also sees Armand s passion when he
is warned by about Desiree s unknown identity, be he does not care. The narrator continues to
say , The passion that awoke in him that day, when he saw her at the gate, swept along like an
avalanche, or like a prairie fire, or like anything that drives headlong over all obstacles. (Chopin
947 ) Unfortunately for Armand, the obstacles he and his family Walko 3 were going to face
would prove to be too much for him to handle. As you continue to read this short story you realize
that Armand is an arrogant man who is passionate and very proud of his families status and
accomplishments yet despite advancements in the freeing of the slaves, he remains a racist.
Armand is also characteristically a very proud person. Proud of his heritage because he comes from
a prominent, wealthy family of Louisiana. During this time period,

Search Techniques Used By Google Scholar
When searching the above four databases the search techniques I used were: After selecting a
topic the next step is to identify, in a structured way, the appropriate and related information. A
systematic approach is most likely to generate a beneficial review. Searches for literature
reviews are attempted most ordinarily utilizing PCs and electronic databases. PC databases
offer access to immense amounts of data, which can be recovered more effortlessly and rapidly
than utilizing a manual hunt. (Younger, 2004) There are various electronic databases, a large
portion of which manage particular fields of data. It is vital along these lines to recognize which
databases are applicable to the theme. Google scholar has latest information available and is
freely accessible to all as compared to the other sources. I for myself chose to search from google
scholar for my review as it provides a wider and richer database than others. It searches a wide
variety of sources, including academic publishers, universities, and preprint depositories looking
for: Peer reviewed articles, Thesis, Books, Technical reports etc. is easy to search as it provides
some basic and advanced search options, like a database attempts to help you find the most useful

Chinese Culture vs. American Culture in Amy Tan s The Joy Luck Club
An author s cultural background can play a large part in the authors writing. Amy Tan, a Chinese
American woman, uses the cultural values of Chinese women in American culture in her novel,
The Joy Luck Club. These cultural values shape the outcome of The Joy Luck Club. The two
cultural value systems create conflict between the characters.
In The Joy Luck Club, the chapter Waiting Between the Trees illustrates major concerns facing
Chinese American women. Chinese culture is a male dominated culture that leaves women little
freedom. Their only job is to make their male spouses content. Living with their traditional culture
in American society, Chinese American... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She was very pretty when she was a young girl. She was educated like every Chinese woman
used to be: To be obedient, to honor one s parents, one s husband and to try to please him and his
family. Ying Ying was not taught to use her own digression and make her own waythrough life.
The result of this education was a disaster due to the differences in values between the two
cultures. Ying Ying realized that her marriage was a mistake when her husband left her for
another woman. Her love for him turned to hate and she killed her unborn baby. She felt great
remorse for this and considered herself a murderer. She later remarried a gentleman by the name of
St. Clair. With St. Clair she had a daughter. After her second son, which was her third child, died at
birth, Ying Ying had a mental breakdown. She saw his death as a punishment for the murdering her
first son.
Ying Ying became passive and lifeless after her second son died. She kept the fact that she felt
responsible for her second sons death a secret from her husband and daughter, Lena. As shown in
this example, Ying Ying had Chinese cultural values in an American society. This produces the
conflict between cultures. Ying Ying becomes so passive that she lets her husband make all of her
decisions for her.
Lena St.Clair, on the other hand, was born in America and lives like an American girl. But when
she was born, she sprang from me like a slippery fish, and had been swimming away ever since,

Persuasive Essay Friends
Pre Test Persuasive Essay Friends is a hit television (tv) show, and has been since 1994 when it
first came out. The television show follows the lives of six friends throughout the course of 10
years. Friends is a good tv show despite some people s opinions. The show was at the top of the
charts for the years that it ran, and even more after that. The theme song itself was number 1 for 8
weeks, and after that was still within the top numbers (Billboard Staff, 2015). Even though the
show is aimed for a mature audience, it captures the qualities a hit tv show needs. Friendsis a good
tv show due to the fact that it is a comedy, includes lots of plot twists, and follows one basic
storyline.
To begin, the genre of Friends is comedy. This is the ideal genre for this show because comedies
keep people in a good mood while they watch it. Even on a bad day, a comedy can amuse,
entertain, and provoke enjoyment, (AMC Filmsite, 2017). Also, comedy is one of the most
popular choices within adult audiences. 52% of adults watch comedy tv shows, with the only
category having a higher percentage being movies at 58% (Scarborough, 2013). As well as,
comedy can mean more than one thing. Multiple types of comedy exist, as there are many ways
to make someone laugh. Friends does a very good job of touching on many different kinds of
comedy. Friends is one of the most popular genres of television, and includes elements that draw
people s interest.
Not only is Friends a comedy, it includes multiple plot twists. One of these plot twists is when
Monica and Chandler start to date. Throughout the show up until this point, Monica spends time
to tell Chandler that she is not interested which is especially outlined in an episode set at the
beach, where Chandler tries to find any way to make Monica say she d date him. An example of
this is that he says Okay, there s an apocalypse and we are the last two people on Earth... and
Monica still responds with eh. This is what caused the decision for them to start dating to be a
shock to everyone watching. Another plot twist was when Rachel got pregnant. This was clever
writing because the show had been more focused on Monica and Chandler at that point, and when
the pregnancy test was

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Essay

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Living on this earth is a privilege and unfortunately we sometimes take advantage of it. Stories of
deforestation, air and water pollution really make a person think of just how much our planet is
being harmed. A major concern is water pollution. Water covers at least 70 percent of the planet
which makes our rivers, lakes, and oceans essential. Many of these bodies of water are being
polluted and although they may be out of sight, they eventually help pollution increase. Actions
should be made to stop the pollution of our waters before things get worse. If we want to decrease
the amount of pollution it starts out by increasing the amount of recycling we do. It ... Show more

Sunlight does eventually play a part as it breaks plastic down into smaller pieces but that can just
make it worse. The plastic still never goes away it just becomes microscopic. Of the more than
200 billion pounds of plastic the world produces each year, about 10 percent ends up in the ocean.
(Earth Magazine). Most of that plastic eventually sinks, damaging life on the ocean floor. The
plastic that floats ends up in gyres, and settle in massive garbage patches that form there, much like
the Pacific Subtropical Gyre.
Plastic is a very useful material but when in the ocean, it endangers animal life. Small surface
debris, mostly plastic resin pellets are a common piece of marine debris. Because they are so small
they can easily get lost along the way, washing through the water with other plastics and into the
sea. Pollution like this is causing harm to sea animals such as the seabird; the albatross. The
albatross scoops its food from the ocean and without knowing picks up trash along the way. Plastic
debris along with other garbage is then fed to its young mistakenly for food. Of the 500,000
albatross chicks born here each year, about 200,000 die, mostly from dehydration or starvation. A
two year study funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency showed that chicks that died
from those causes had twice as much plastic in their stomachs as those that died for other reasons.

  • 2. Plato And The Euthyphro Dilemma Siddhanth Goyal Does morality stem from God? Or does it exist independently of his presence, not subject to arbitrary decisions? The first discussion over these questions appeared in Plato s Euthyphro, in which Plato chronicles the proceedings of a highly repetitive argument between Socrates and Euthyphro, a prophet and holy man, over the nature of piety and holiness. The questions produced in this dialogue have been expanded to remain relevant even in a modern religious context. It has achieved so much fame that the core question presented in this dialogue is now known as the Euthyphro Dilemma. In the dialogue, Socrates presents Euthyphro with a choice, Is what is holy loved by the gods because it is holy, or is it holy because it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to this theory, there are no moral standards that exist without God s will, and without his commands, nothing would be right or wrong. God is omnipotent, and therefore, morality itself is derived from God s nature. Without God, there is no basis for our moral structure and under this, what is moral is so because God has decreed it as such. This theory would stress the complete sovereignty of God s will, and the concept that morality exists based not on reason, or any logical basis, but simply due to the arbitrary nature of God s commands. This theory proposes that there is no rationale, moral or immoral, behind divine commands, and hence renders both his commands and morality subject to his whims. On this theory, God could have commanded, for example, for one to kill an innocent child, and it would have been mandatory for a person to do it. Abhorrent acts, or ones we would consider as such, are automatically pious, simply because God has decreed it, though many, including those who might be inclined to side with the this theory, would agree that they are abhorrent. The theory also rules out the option of assuming that God is just an agent of morality, not its progenitor, leaving the devotee with a puzzling quandary. On the other hand, rejecting the divine command theory, and accepting that moral principles exist independently of divine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Institutional Review Board Institutional Review Boards are tasked with carrying out two main forms of review: initial review and continuing review; they are indispensable to the review process for protecting human participants. Initial review of an experiment occurs before it is approved. Coleman remarks, This review encompasses the research protocol, the informed consent documents to be signed by subjects, any advertisements to be used in recruiting subjects, and other relevant documents (Coleman et al. 169). The informed consent document is vital for the review; it is the required document which supplies all research participants with necessary information to give informed consent. The HHS is required to oversee IRBs in order to ensure that they are functioning properly. Institutional Review Boards cannot function properly without being overseen by the HHS, and therefore lack of oversight would lead to weakened protection of human participants. An Institutional Review Board may not fulfill its purpose without the HHS s close oversight. Two agencies within the Department of Health and Human Services, the Office for Protection from Research Risks (OPRR) and the FDA, are both tasked with reviewing IRBs. The OPRR utilizes an assurance document to oversee how IRBs are functioning. All IRBs using HHS funding must have an assurance document on file with the OPRR. Coleman adds, The assurance is a written statement of an institution s requirements for its IRB and human subject protections (Coleman et al. 170). Meanwhile, FDA uses research investigators to determine whether IRBs are functioning in an effective manner. The OPRR and the FDA share the task of oversight of IRBs, and do so through documentation and research investigators respectively. Without this system of review, Institutional Review Boards would not be checked by any part of government, and thus would have free reign to do as they please. Thus, the interests of human participants ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Thomas Haitian Revolution Analysis Shady Kamel Second Revolutions: Thomas Jefferson and Haiti Beginning in 1789, France s political landscape was completely transformed by the chaotic bloodshed that resulted from the country s absolute monarchy and feudal system. Backing the United States in the American Revolution left France on the verge of bankruptcy, but the Revolution also lay as a precedent for the French to follow soon after. Impacted by the rising enlightenment ideology of inalienable rights, the French depicted the strength of the will of the people and successfully altered the government to better suit the needs of its citizens. Simultaneously, France influenced the rise of another revolution one that would alter society and the social constructs that society revolves around the Haitian Revolution. Professor James Alexander Dun argues, however, that the term revolution is not used as a noun in this instance, and is in fact used as an adjective to further illustrate its descriptiveness and uniqueness to the situation. He believes that a revolution is constituted by a certain series of events , but that the Haitian revolution is more complex than this. Professor Dun s conclusion that a revolution shouldn t be viewed as a thing, but rather, should be looked upon as a description is a fascinating assertion as it challenges conventional thinking, and tailors the term to any particular event such as with France and Haiti. This reasoning expands upon the words adaptability and was necessary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Cognitive Bias In The Los Angeles Police Department Back in the late 1990 s the Los Angeles Police Department was hit by a scandal in which police officers in the Rampart division were accused of various crimes which ranged from planting evidence, perjury, filing false police reports and physical abuse of innocent victims and other crimes. The officers involved were in a special gang task force called CRASH (community resources against street hoodlums) which was created to combat gang related activity and crime in LAPD areas. It was a major scandal because police officers are held to a higher moral standard they are expected to not only uphold the law but abide by it as well. Cognitive bias is a systematic error in thinking that affects the decisions and judgments that people make. (Cherry) This scandal shows how cognitive bias has played out with not only the officers who committed the crimes but also by the detectives led the investigation and the chief of police himself. The first incidence occurred in 1997 when undercover LAPD officer Lyga shot and killed Gaines an off duty officer. Lyga did not know Gaines was a police officer and feared for his life because Gaines was threatening him with a gun in a road rage incidence. This case garnered attention because a white officer shot and killed a black officer. • 10. Chocolate Syrup and Milk Introduction: We were testing the solubility of the chocolate syrup brands while being stirred in whole milk. Our purpose is to see which of the major brands of syrup is most soluble and for what reason. This is important to our daily lives because it makes us aware of what types of materials we are ingesting and this applies to our experiment by seeing which of the ingredients take longer to dissolve. Information known is all brands are known to dissolve in milk but they all use different ingredients and they will cause a difference in the time it takes to dissolve. New information that will be gained from this experiment is which ingredients inside chocolate syrup will take the longest to dissolve, from the type of sugars in it to the syrups. We expected the Nesquik to dissolve the fastest because it did not contain any high fructose corn syrupwhile the other brand of syrup did. Also we observed from the syrups that nesquik was very thin, while the others were very thick and slow in behaviour. Our hypothesis is that the Nesquik will disintegrate the fastest in the milk because it lacks High Fructose Corn Syrup. Materials Procedures: Materials: 1. Hershey s Chocolate Syrup 2. Nesquik Chocolate Syrup 3. Great Value Chocolate Syrup 4. Any ONE of brand whole milk 5. Little Measuring cup 6. 3 cups 7. strainer 8. spoon 9. Large bowl 10. Teaspoon measurer Procedures: 1. These effects can be due to any number of issues. What is perceived as mediocrity by one person may be perceived as a result of stress by another, since everyone perceives situations differently. This may reduce the impact stress has on employees work performance. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The purpose of this study was to determine the negative effects of mediocrity, complacency and stress on employees and the methods that Health Nets Appeals and Grievance (A G) Department can manage employees stress. • 12. Themes In Fallen Angels, Girl In The Green Sweater And A... All authors use literary devices as intrical parts of their story. Literary devices can include symbolism, motif, theme, mood and more. They all are used to do the same thing; to enhance the reader s experience and the development of the story. For instance, in the stories Fallen Angels, Girl in The Green Sweater, and A Thousand Splendid Suns their authors all use theme as literary devices to furtherly write the story. The themes are loss of innocence, fear, and the suppression of women. In the end, all of these authors use unique, realistic themes throughout their story. To begin, the story Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers has a very common theme. This theme used is the loss of innocence. In other words, it is when time passes and someone starts to grow up, they start to realize that nothing is perfect. Also, it is usually thought of as an experience or period in a child s life that widens their awareness of evil, pain, or suffering in the world around them. The story Fallen Angels takes place during the Vietnam War. The main character, Richie Perry, decides to join the war. He is only seventeen; with that being said, the theme of losing innocence fit perfect with this novel because all of the characters are still young and as they go through war, they understand what life is really like. The novel explains the loss of innocence only within a squad of soldiers fighting in Vietnam, Perry being one of them. Lastly, Walter Dean Myers used theme in a very interesting way. His theme was occurred only in a certain group of characters as the story moved on and on. To continue, the themes in the story Girl in The Green Sweater by Krystyna Chiger and Daniel Paisner was fright and loss of innocence, as well. The overall novel was written in Krystyna s point of view of a small town of Jews surviving the Holocaust. Krysha, her family, and some of the other families within the small town of Lvov snuck into the underground sewers to hide from the Nazis. Chiger explained that they lived in the dark, with floods, fires, sicknesses, and death. They were always fearful that they would be discovered. They hid their for 14 months. • 13. Comparing The Time Period Of Joseph Hansberry s The Sun As you begin to compare the time period in which A Raisin in the Sun was written, the 1950s, and now, you can find many similarities and differences regarding racial equality in the Chicagoland, even more specifically the south side. The Younger family, deriving from the African American descent, in Lorraine Hansberry s play, has trouble finding happiness when they are surrounded by successful white people, while they are stuck living in a two bedroom apartment and struggle to make ends meet. In the 1950s, it was much harder for African Americans to find jobs where they could make a substantial living to provide for their families, but in today s society the opportunities for the black racehave improved immensely, although a problem with their pay grade still persists. On the other hand, the two time periods are similar in the respect that the environment on the Southside of Chicago today is very similar to what it was like almost 60 years ago. Additionally, just like in the play, police force continues to be an issue, whether that be because they favor a certain race, or police brutality; shooting people with the wrong intentions. More problems that exist today include, gang violence, protests, and segregated schools in the poorer black communities. While the Chicagoland continues to struggle with problems regarding racial equality, they have made many improvements such as the development of organizations to keep children off of the streets and out of trouble as well as ... Causes Of Csare Lombroso Nowadays it is common to hear expressions like beware of that man, he has the face of a thief ; These young people are suspicious, their appearance is deplorable, or because of that scar he has, I would say he is a criminal. It is also often observed that certain types of people are still rejected, isolated or labeled by society, due to their physical characteristics, because they have congenital malformations, or they have been acquired during the course of their existence. It is not good to judge by appearances, but there are people who at first sight seem dangerous to us. In the nineteenth century, the scientist Cesare Lombrosodeveloped a theory that defines potential criminals by some of their physical features. Cesare Lombroso, a criminologist and Italian physicians, he was one of the forerunners of modern criminology in that he may be born predisposed to be a criminal for biological causes. His legacy is still present, although his studies and publications caused and continue to cause considerable controversy. This Italian, who during his career published twenty five books that combine biological science with criminology, was one of the most important exponents of criminological positivism. Classical Influences On Modern Films And Literature Vuong KhuatClassical influences on modern films and literature Classical Greece and Rome were ancient civilizations that existed 2500 years ago, and are regarded by numerous scholars as the foundation of humanities in various fields. In popular culture, Ancient Greece and Rome are portrayed substantially in books and movies; however, not many people are aware of how they also shape our thoughts, ideals, and motivations. Through an analysis of classical elements often portrayed in popular media, this essay attempts to illustrate how the representation of classical Greece and Rome in books and movies influence our lives and emphasize the need to stay informed as these influences can be both beneficial and detrimental to our perception of the world. The way ancient culture can impact our ideals is demonstrated by various contemporary adaptations of Greek mythology. For instance, in 1997, Walt Disney produced the animated movie Hercules, based on stories about the legendary Greek hero who persevered through numerous labors and challenges to eventually gained a place in Mount Olympus, the home of the gods. Hercules was a major box office hit among children and had left a deep impression on how they perceive the qualities of a hero. Similarly, the 2004 film Troy, based loosely on Homer s the Iliad, tells the story of Achilles and the Trojan War. Troy was a critical success, grossing nearly 500 million dollars worldwide. • 19. The Suffragette Film Analysis The Suffragette film presents a truthful recount of how women were perceived within society. Throughout society, there was a belief that women do not need to represent their own self; rather they have husbands that will represent their wives (Suffragette 2015). Women are often left in a state of subordination because men are considered to be self centered and are only fully noticed when a male is sexually attracted to her. As a result, women are perceived as sexual objects for the male gender(Solarnis 1968, p.464). As mentioned previously, it was expected that women follow their gender norms of caring for the children and husbandand not to stray away from this norm. The film follows Maud, who is the main character, as she begins to take part in the Suffragette movement. Maud s Suffragette encounter began when she was listening to Mrs Olton s speech, which was utilised in order to get women to voice their struggles, and hope for change. At the time of the speech, Maud was working at the laundry for Mr Taylor, who sexually, emotionally and physically abused the women who were working there. Following Mrs Olton s speech, Maud was forced to give a statement to parliament and she described working at the laundry for Mr Taylor. She stated that the women working in the laundry received aches, chest coughs, crushed fingers, leg ulcers, burns, headaches, and sometimes, poisoned (Suffragette 2015). Additionally, women were paid 13 shillings; whereas men were paid 19 shillings, even though women worked a third more of the hours (Suffragette 2015). The acquisition talks were initiated after a shareholder wrote a letter asking the CEO, Rijkman Groenink, and the supervisory board chairman, Arthur Martinez, to actively investigate a merger, acquisition or division of ABN AMRO. The motivation was that the share price did not reflect the true value of the underlying assets. On March 20, 2007, ABN AMRO established it was having merger talks with Barclays. However, parents should be quite thankful to have been notified by an expert like Steven Levenkron who knows the development of the disease and how to find a stop to it. When small children develop a sense of trust, and later a sense of intimacy or closeness to another, and a sense of self or identity, they are not vulnerable to becoming creatures of the culture in its most extreme form as exemplified by the media: magazines, movies, and so on. But individuals who are seduced by popular trends allow these trends to define much of their identity (20). In this quote it mentions how children at a young age develops trust in their surroundings and closeness to others. In the process, they begin looking for their own identity. Therefore, they wouldn t become defenseless to be like people in the media. They wouldn t get sucked into wanting to be the same, and try to be different. Some of these traits, such as perfectionist behavior, may disguise themselves as gifts to parents. They may see the child as independent, not needing much support in a family overburdened by other problems. A successful child who often does well in school and is socially outgoing, does not appear worrisome (21). In this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pit bulls are feared because of their past reputation as fight dogs and this has led to the banning of Pit bulls in many counties and cities across the United States. However, I have had the honor of owning a Pit bullas well as knowing many great Pit bulls a Pit bull owners over the years, and what my experience shows is that it s not the breed, but the owner that determines the dogs behavioral outcome, it also shows that Pit bulls are extremely loyal and protective of their owners, and that they are great with people especially kids. My Pit bull was able to disprove these false assumptions made on his breed by proving to people that where you come from doesn t define you, but how you treat people does. In fact, he was so kind to people that sometimes it would shock them because they thought Pit bulls were supposed to be this vicious breed that could not be controlled. Hopefully my personal experience has been able to shine a positive light on Pit bulls and shown that when it comes down to a dog their breed shouldn t define them because a dog is just a reflection of their owner and if a Pit bull is treated correctly they won t randomly lash out at their owner, but will be loyal and protective to the ... A systematic approach is most likely to generate a beneficial review. Searches for literature reviews are attempted most ordinarily utilizing PCs and electronic databases. PC databases offer access to immense amounts of data, which can be recovered more effortlessly and rapidly than utilizing a manual hunt. It is vital along these lines to recognize which databases are applicable to the theme. Google scholar has latest information available and is freely accessible to all as compared to the other sources. The television show follows the lives of six friends throughout the course of 10 years. Friends is a good tv show despite some people s opinions. The show was at the top of the charts for the years that it ran, and even more after that. The theme song itself was number 1 for 8 weeks, and after that was still within the top numbers (Billboard Staff, 2015). Even though the show is aimed for a mature audience, it captures the qualities a hit tv show needs. Throughout the show up until this point, Monica spends time to tell Chandler that she is not interested which is especially outlined in an episode set at the beach, where Chandler tries to find any way to make Monica say she d date him. An example of this is that he says Okay, there s an apocalypse and we are the last two people on Earth... and Monica still responds with eh. This is what caused the decision for them to start dating to be a shock to everyone watching. Another plot twist was when Rachel got pregnant. Stories of deforestation, air and water pollution really make a person think of just how much our planet is being harmed. A major concern is water pollution. Water covers at least 70 percent of the planet which makes our rivers, lakes, and oceans essential. Many of these bodies of water are being polluted and although they may be out of sight, they eventually help pollution increase. Actions should be made to stop the pollution of our waters before things get worse. If we want to decrease the amount of pollution it starts out by increasing the amount of recycling we do. It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sunlight does eventually play a part as it breaks plastic down into smaller pieces but that can just make it worse. The plastic still never goes away it just becomes microscopic. Of the more than 200 billion pounds of plastic the world produces each year, about 10 percent ends up in the ocean. (Earth Magazine). Most of that plastic eventually sinks, damaging life on the ocean floor. The plastic that floats ends up in gyres, and settle in massive garbage patches that form there, much like the Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Plastic is a very useful material but when in the ocean, it endangers animal life. Small surface debris, mostly plastic resin pellets are a common piece of marine debris. Because they are so small they can easily get lost along the way, washing through the water with other plastics and into the sea. Pollution like this is causing harm to sea animals such as the seabird; the albatross. The albatross scoops its food from the ocean and without knowing picks up trash along the way. Plastic debris along with other garbage is then fed to its young mistakenly for food. Of the 500,000 albatross chicks born here each year, about 200,000 die, mostly from dehydration or starvation. A two year study funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency showed that chicks that died from those causes had twice as much plastic in their stomachs as those that died for other reasons. ...
