Institutional Slavery And The Slave System
Institutional Slavery
Vijay Balusu
0 Period To regulate the relationship between the owner and the slave, and to institutionalize
slavery, the Slave Codes were established. These codes were laws in colonies which defined the
rights of the masters and slaves, along with the legal sanctions over the black population; they
generally placed harsh restrictions on a slave s freedom and gave the owner absolute power over
him/her.
Asiento System
The Indians were dying of disease and overwork under the Spanish rule. So they introduced the
Asiento System to make up the labor shortage. Under this system, the Spanish and any other
country could carry African slaves to the Americas but had to pay a tax to the Spanish crown for
every slave imported. It lasted from 1543 to 1834.
Spain
The Spanish had a Slave Code before they acquired colonies in the New World, the same code
which applied to their colonies. Las Siete Partidas was what the slave code was called and it was
written in the 13th Century.
The Spanish Slave Code was special because it acknowledged the fact that slavery was contrary to
natural justice and that it was an evil act. But they thought it was a necessary evil, necessary for
the economic development of the colonies. This caused many problems for the Spanish because
the slaves naturally revolted because it was implied that the natural state of a man was freedom,
this reasoning gave them justification to revolt. The first slave revolt in the Spanish colonies was
in 1522

The Pros And Cons Of Bilinguals
Language is an important way to communicate with people around us in the world, but many
people around us speak more than one language. Bilinguals are people who can speak at least two
languages. There is a lot of debating on whether monolinguals have better memory or bilinguals.
Many research has shown similar results with similar experiments. It is true that monolinguals do
know more words in a language, but when it comes to memory, bilinguals have a better memory
(Kudo Swanson, 2014). Bilinguals do make grammar mistakes a lot and mix up the languages to
get their point across but they are able to deliver their point across. Overall, they are better able
to focus on what to remember. In all of the studies, I have reviewed bilinguals have outperformed
monolinguals. Bilinguals are able to focus more on the task that is assigned to them as well as
eliminate the distraction around them. Bilinguals have learned how to balance two languages in
their life, they speak a different language at home and a different language at school. Bilinguals are
able to pick up cues in their everyday life to deal with any type of situation. Bilinguals are able to
attack the situation quickly and accurately than monolinguals Bilinguals do have outperform
monolinguals in all tasks except in vocabulary.
Body
We always hear that knowing two languages is better than one, it will take you farther in future.
So, the people who speak two languages are bilinguals. A study conducted by Blom et. al

Self-Reliance Vs Transcendentalism
Autonomy Being able to rely on one s own capabilities and judgements or resources is called self
reliance. Self reliance was a key attribute to obtain during the Transcendentalism time period.
This period was a direct reaction of the Age of Reason. The Transcendentalist era lasted from
about 1826 to 1860 and also ran as a part of the Age of Romance. During this time, the primary
beliefs were that people understood that God and everything going on was in direct correlation
with nature. Another popular belief was that everything was connected by an oversoul. Passages
that demonstrate self reliance perfectly are Self Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emersonand Walden, or
Life in the Woods by Henry David Thoreau. Although inferior to Walden, or Life... Show more

Self reliance was a major factor in this era. Both works demonstrate great examples of self
reliance. Both authors contributed a huge amount to the Transcendentalist era, even though one
actually lived out what the other one preached. Although inferior to Walden, or Life in the
Woods, Self Reliance is still a strong transcendental piece about being able to fully rely on
yourself, it is just not as in depth and detailed about the true transcendental life. Both Walden, or
Life in the Woods, and Self Reliance, show examples of independence, reliance on one s
abilities, and having the ability to make a life on your own. The Transcendentalist time period
was truly one for the history books. Many people were too scared to be individual and stand out,
while others lived the true life of a transcendental, free of all worries, and being free to make
whatever choice they

Hard Rock Returns To Prison Essay
Hard Rock never took shit from anyone. An immense character that fills the room with his split
purple lips, and lumbed ears, and yellow eyes, like a wolf: he wasn t listening to anyone but
himself. Until one time, he was taken for good, and he never returned; at least as the mean
nigger he used to be. Now, Hard Rock was a tame man. More of a joker if we re really describing
him in full: with his silly grin that s forever plastered on his face. The doctors fried him with
electricity until he might as well have been the key on the end of Ben Franklin s kite. And those
yellow eyes, which used to intimidate anyone who dare turn their own eyes upon him...empty, like
knot holes in a fence . The man in the poem Hard Rock Returns to Prison from the Hospital of the...

A man so far gone that he is practically brain dead. Who made him this way though? The
combine as Chief Bromden likes to call it. This theme of conformity and the use of nigh deadly
force to get rebels to conform is also seen in this poem: the doctors...bore a hole through his head,
and shot electricity through the rest . Visual imagery here is shocking in more ways than one.
Cutting a hole through someone s head is cruel, vicious, and animalistic, but it seems to be a
perfectly normal thing to do in the eyes of the combine. And as if that is not enough, after
evoking the horrible image of Hard Rock s brain being torn out of his head, whatever is left is
put through shock therapy. Not even Hard Rock could endure that without taking a visual toll.
And that toll turns out to be his conformity to society. He now is as docile as an everyday toddler
with the IQ similar to a vegetable. What was once a towering man that intimidates yet commands
the respect of the entire prison, is now reduced to a peaceful giant who takes exactly 3 minutes to
tell you his name . This change from menacing criminal to being harmless as a housefly, is further

In this model, electrons move in fixed orbits at fixed distances from the nucleus. Each of these
orbits represents a certain quantity of energy. The outer orbits have more energy than the inner
orbits. Atoms do not emit radiation, such as light, when the electrons are in the fixed orbit, but an
electron can move to a different orbit. If an electron moves down to an orbit with less energy,
energy is released in the form of radiation a light quantum. If the electron moves from an orbit
closer to the nucleus to one farther from the nucleus, energy is absorbed. The frequencies and
wavelengths of the light quanta are unique for each atom. In addition to creating a model, Bohr s
formula and associated calculations correlated the spectral lines observed for the hydrogen atom
with electron energy levels for electrons in the Bohr hydrogen atom model. This indicated that the
emission spectrum resulted from emission of small amounts of energy when electrons moved

Assessing the Perceived Image of Citizens about Romanian...
In a society which has become increasingly more complex, the role of Police forces tends to be
versatile. Accordingly, lately, researchers gave a special attention to subjects regarding Police, and
implicitly to the public image of the institution.
Generally, the police image is conceptualized based on three main categories: overall image,
outcomes and process (Mastrofski, 1998). The overall image of police reflects perceptions, feelings
and evaluations about the police in general. As Gallagher, Maguire, Mastrofski, Reisig (2001)
stated, this area includes various general descriptions and analysis of the confidence and trust in the
police (e.g., Hough, Jackson Bradford, 2013; Stanko, Jackson, Bradford Kohl, 2012), satisfaction

The original form proposed by Osgood et. al (1957) was structured on three dimensions: Evaluation,
Potency and Activity, and has been confirmed by previous pan cultural studies (e.g. Heise, 1970;
Osgood, May Miron, 1975, etc.). Evaluation relates to goodness or badness, morality, utility, etc.,
Potency to magnitude, social power, strength, expansiveness, etc., whereas Activity relates to speed,
animation, spontaneity, etc. (Heise, 2010).
Although it was frequently used to measure attitudes (Osgood et al., 1957) or the meaning of
concepts (Doyle Bottomley, 2010; Mindak, 1961), SDS has proven useful in many areas, including
in the assessment of organizational image (de ex. Bonner George, 1988; Van Heerden Puth, 1995),
corporate image, advertising image, brand or service image, also (Smith Albaum, 2005).
In order to measure the meaning of the concept, the semantic differentiator usually uses a five or
seven point scale, based on a list of bipolar paired terms, with opposite meaning. According to their
disposition, attitude or image of the assessed construct, respondents select a point on the interval
for each contrasting pair. Each interval is expressed by quantifiers with certain magnitudes, with a
neutral point as central quantifier (Lopes, Nogueira Martins, Andrade Barros, 2011).

Education Is A Growing Aspect Of The Health Care Field
Education is a growing aspect in the health care field. It has an important effect for all health
care providers. Nursing goes back many generations. It started as a learned skill for caring for
the sick and wounded in the war. Nursing evolved into diploma nursing, to Associate Degree of
Nursing (ADN), Bachelor s Degree of Nursing (BSN), and Master s Degree of Nursing. Today,
as many as 52.6% of nurses list their highest degree as an ADN (The Impact of Education..).
However, hospitals are pushing their nurses to return to school and obtain a BSN. What is the big
push to have a bachelor s degree? Are nurses that have a bachelor s more competent in taking care
of patients than those to obtain an ADN? First, lets look at the education... Show more content on

A BSN degree includes all of the hands on care of nursing which is included in an ADN program.
The bachelor s program includes research about evidenced based nursing practice and leadership
skills not taught in an associate degree program. The bachelors program prepares nurses to take
roles as care providers, managers, and coordinators in nursing care. According to The Institue of
Medicine (IOM) in their report The Future of Nursing: Focus on Education, the 21st centry brings
on many health challenges including the majority of the population being older adults (65 years
and older), and the population is more diverse. The IOM reports that most health care today
relates to more chronic conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease due
to the aging population and increasing obesity levels. Patient needs are more complex, and nurses
need higher competencies in leadership, health policy, teamwork and collaboration to deliver the
care. To respond to the increasing demands of the more complex patients, the IOM calls for nurses
to achieve higher levels of education. A BSN education provides nurses with a wider range of
competencies to care for patients. The IOM recommends that 80% of

Part B:
When studying chemisty, you must grasp how reactions can form acids or bases, as well as what
effect that has on pH. A basic understanding of chemistry is important in biology, because living
things are composed of matter.
When water splits apart (which doesn t happen to every water molecule all at the same time),
hydrogen and hydroxide ions are created. The hydrogen ion H(+) can combine with negatively
charged elements to form acids. Acids are molecules that can split apart in water and release
hydrogen ions. A common example is hydrochloric

Why Is The Nuclear Bomb Justified
Have you ever thought that killing thousands of people could ever be justified? It may not seem

president, Harry Truman, took into account of how this would save lives, and end the war faster,
even though not many people think it s sane and humane it was the best time to do it since they
had people dying by suicide. When we dropped the bombs we prevented over one thousand
deaths, the death rate of the Japanese and the U.S. added up to way over one million. If we didn t

the story till the End.
The two reporters named Carl Bernstien and Bob Woodwardrealized that this break in was some

political sabotage tracing back to JFK.
Woodward and Bernstein were then contacted by a reliable source named Deep Throat. Deep Throat
gave them information on who had control of the money in Sloan s safe. He pointed them to two
high ranking official that were thought to be the masterminds of the break in and of other CRP

also said the attorney general John Mitchell was also some how involved. As Woodward and
Bernstien were having there articles published about Watergate the White House was denying any

Have you ever had a moment in your life where you wish it never happened? It happened to me.

The Hiding Place Corrie Ten Boom Quotes
The book, The Hiding Place, is a biography on Corrie Ten Boom and her family s struggles
during the Holocaust. The book takes place before World War I through World War II. Corrie
and her family lived in the Netherlands in the time of the Holocaust where they owned a build
and repair shop for watches. She had two sisters named Betsie and Nollie, and one brother
named Willem. Her father did most of the work with the watch shop, and her mother died when
she was a little girl. In 1940 when the Nazis started invading the Netherlands, they would often
find people praying in their shop because they were scared. The Ten Boom family begins taking in

This book had a lot to do with religion because people were scared and looked to God for
answers. A quote that I believe goes with this is one from Corrie where she says , Lord Jesus,
You were called to a hearing, too. Show me what to do. (Page 118 of Chapter 11) This reiterates
that she was looking to God on what she should do. A theme that branches off of religion was
faith. Faith played a very important role throughout the book, from normal practices of faith in
the beginning of the book to Corrie using faith to keep strong in the labor camps. One quote that
I feel describes this is, But if God has shown us bad times ahead it s enough for that he knows
about them. That s why he sometimes shows us things you know, to tell us that this too is in his
hands, (page 50 of Chapter 5) This quote shows that Corrie has faith in God that he has it all
under control. All in all, I enjoyed reading this book a lot. It showed me a lot of different side of
the Holocaust that I previously did not know. I think the best way to prevent terrible events from
history from happening again is to learn more about them, and I believe this book does a great job
in teaching the hardships and truths about what happened during the

Flesh Market by Nicola Morgan
Fleshmarket
By Nicola Morgan
The theme of obsession is important in the novel Fleshmarket by Nicola Morgan.
Fleshmarket is set in Edinburgh in 1828. Two of the main characters are Robbie and Essie who are
brother and sister. They live in an awful, poverty stricken environment in the old town after
everything changed when their mother died at the hands of Doctor Robert Knox. Robbie Blames
Knox for his horrible life and suffering as he believes Knox has not suffered yet and he took away
the good life Robbie nearly had before Knox operated on his mum and this leads to his deep

Robbie is appalled when he breaks into surgeons square and finds some anatomy books and
begins to read them, each time he read the chilling description of an operation with its cold
explanation of gruesome techniques, his breath stuck in his throat and he wanted desperately not
to read, but he could not stop. His eyes were dragged along the lines. This tells us that Robbie
thinks Knox and men like him have no emotion or soul. Word choice (dragged) highlights Robbie s
obsession with anatomy, as if someone is making Robbie read the books.
Robbie s obsession leads him to spend a night in the Canongate Toolbooth as he gets caught in the
surgeon s library Robbie turned his face towards the wall and dragged his parched tongue against
the dripping stones. And as he drank he cried. This incident highlights how low Robbie has sunk;
he is so desperate that he is doing the same as a mad man.
While Robbie is in jail he is bewildered as to why he s let the obsession with Knox overcome
him His sense powerlessness was overwhelming. It rose in his chest and he screwed up his eyes
against it. What have I done? What has Doctor Knox made me become? This shows us that
Robbie blames his predicament on Knox when actually it is his own actions that have caused him
to end up in jail he feels once again that Knox has all the power.
Robbie goes to Joseph s house and feels he can talk to him about God what sort of Goes would take

College Costs Are Out Of Control Essay
People with college degrees are paid 80% more than people with only a high school education.
When the college degree is from a more prestigious school, that percentage increases even further
(McArdle). Even President Barack Obama acknowledged this in a 2012 speech, saying that The
incomes of folks with a collegedegree are twice as high as those who don t have a high school
diploma (Lemann). While a college educationis a good investment for the long run, the cost of
college is not a positive. The price of goods has risen due to inflation over the past decade, but
during that time college increased drastically. The rates have nearly doubled, but the things that
students learn still remain the same. If students are paying so much more... Show more content on

The plan will help the state to reach its goal of helping 60 percent of Idahoans between the ages
of 25 and 34 complete a degree or certificate by 2020 (Mills). In addition, half the United States
already has, or is in the midst, of making statewide education systems that include college (Kingsley
and Vance). Not only is college becoming more common, but it would make sense that with more
students coming into college that the rates would be lower. However, colleges are not decreasing
costs, but instead increasing them, making tuition costs harder on students. The job market is
evolving, causing college to be essential to anyone that wants to pursue a job. In a 2012 speech,
President Barack Obama said that right now, the unemployment rate for Americans with a college
degree or more is about half the national average (Lemann). This shows that even with a college
degree, the job market is changing, causing many students to be unemployed.Yet at the same time,
people that have a college education are better off than those without one. Moreover, the current job
market is becoming more information based, which requires more literacy, math skills and critical
thinking. Since the United States is not fully prepared with an education system that only requires
kindergarten through 12th grade, the United States must outsource jobs overseas to have necessary
tasks be completed. This not only takes

Rough Draft Vasco Da Gama, a little known Portuguese man, discovered a trade route to India on
behalf of the Portuguese government. A feat Christopher Columbus was unable to accomplish.
Vasco Da Gama was a boy born in Sines, Portugal, sometime between 1460 and 1469. The actual
date of his birth is unclear. As a child Da Gama dreamed of becoming a pirate (World Book
Online). He began sailing after studying astronomy, navigation and mathematics in high school.

For example, when he was mad, da Gama killed several people and took 3 prisoners. He caused
this tragedy because the king scammed him. The king scammed him by trading two bells and
two gold lumps for one navigator instead of three. You can see why da Gama was mad, right
(Larkin, 14)? Vasco da Gama thought he could trade caps and bells for emeralds and diamonds
(Larkin, 9). He did not realize that he was insulting the Zamorin, Indian ruler, and that would
usually cost da Gama his life, but he was smart and brought more expensive goods just in case.
Vasco da Gama had accomplishments that helped him in very many ways. One was to travel to
India. Da Gama s plan was to travel to Calicut, India. This would be his greatest achievement.

The fact that companies who carry out these processes do not contain tanks where the water store

My breathing slowed and shortly was accompanied by my low moans as I tried to squeeze little

At some point on that rainy day, I found myself consumed in complete and utter denial. It must

Martin Van Buchanan Analysis
I wanted to examine President Martin Van Buren and President James Buchanan, who were both
Democrats or of the Democratic Party.
These are the key similarities between President Martin Van Buren and President James Buchanan.
First is the offices they held. Both Presidents were in the United States Senate and were appointed
Ministers to foreign countries. Another key similarity is that they both only served one term.
Another one is that neither one of them oversaw a major war.

These are not perfect similarities or differences. At least in the way that someone could say that
Abraham Lincoln freed slaves or Thomas Jefferson owned them. There are two similarities with
the preceding statement. First, both of the Presidents tried to maintain the integrity of the union.
The faster your state expands the harder it is to maintain control and placing a nation under the
support of those who would advocate it be left intact is the lesser of two evils. The second way is
that both of their policies would have been in opposition to Southern Democrats. This is because
Texas would have entered the union a slave state and Southerners would have been opposed to anti
slavery Northerners holding office.
A few other thoughts I had about these men and their party was. This party iteration of the
Democrat seems to have more in common with the Democratic Republicans of the Jeffersonian era
rather than the Democrats around the time President Abraham Lincoln was elected. I reached this
conclusion because the Democrats of the time had a platform of free market economics ie. the use
of gold as currency, solvency and the opposition to state chartered federal

How to Patent a Website Idea: Everything You Need to Know
If you want to learn how to patent a website idea, it is important that you understand the steps
necessary to protect your website idea from others that may try to profit from your idea. For
example, a utility patent is the most common type of patent. It covers the functional aspects of an
invention. In order for an invention to qualify for patent protection, it must be useful, new, and non
obvious. This means that it must be have some sort of purpose, or otherwise, be useful to potential
consumers. It must be new, which means that the invention cannot be similar to another invention
already patented. Lastly, it must be non obvious, meaning that it cannot be an obvious combination

Provisional Patents for Websites
A provisional patent application is filed with the USPTO and establishes an early filing date, but
doesn t amount to a formal patent application unless and until the applicant files a non provisional
patent application within the 12 months subsequent to filing the non provisional patent. A
provisional patent application is both less detailed and less costly. Immediately after you file your
provisional patent application, you can indicate that your website idea is patent pending. During this
time period, you can develop your website idea even further and turn your provisional patent
application into a formal non provisional patent application.
With a provisional application, you ll want to prepare diagrams and drawings of your website when
filing the application. When drafting the diagrams, consider the user interface itself, the software
generated process, and the administrative screens/cods/software used to maintain the website. Since
there are many unique business processes involved in your website, you want to keep each one
distinct, showcasing the unique methods and processes utilized, and how your website came
together. The more specific and detailed you can be, the higher your chance of patent protection.
Always be mindful that you can hire a qualified patent attorney to assist you with preparing your
application. You can even hire a professional to assist in the drawings,

I Heard A Fly Buzz-When I Died By Emily Dickinson
Emily Dickinson s carefully thought out poem, I heard a Fly buzz when I died, discusses how
death is an inevitable experience that everyone faces. Dickinson is a well known poet for writing
about death and topics relating to death. The set up of the poem conveys an atmosphere in which
someone dies. A simple fly s buzzdisrupts this quiet and heavy atmosphere surrounding the person s
deathbed which causes the reader to focus more on the buzzof the fly than the person who is dying.
The speaker is coming to terms with the fact that she is dying and tells of how she is giving
away her keepsakes and belongings. Her giving away her belongings conveys that she is ready to
die, however, just as she is about to pass, the fly interrupts again. The fly is a seemingly small,
irrelevant bug, but in this poem, it becomes the focal point to show that deathcan be
inconsequential. The speaker of this poem recounts her last moments before death experiencing
many emotions such as loneliness, calmness, and stress. These emotions make the speaker
notice the insignificant aspects surrounding her in the room causing her to realize that death is
not an extraordinary experience. Dickinson s effective use of symbolism helps create an
atmosphere in which the speaker is able to perceive her death in different ways. The Stillness in
the Room was like the Stillness in the Air between the Heaves of Storm, is symbolism for how
the atmosphere in the room was so still when the speaker died (2 4). The moments before death
are like the calm between a storm, and even though there is no rain in between a storm, the
atmosphere is still heavy just as how the room is when the speaker died. Once the speaker died,
she was able to notice how quiet the room was, and she perceived how different the atmosphere
was from before she died too after her death. As the poem starts to build up, Dickinson mentions
that a King is coming to the speaker s death, which is either death itself or in reference to a
religious figure. In line seven, For that last Onset when the King Be witnessed in the Room, the
King seems to be approaching her as she dies, and if the King is God, then God could be coming
to take the speaker into the afterlife(7 8).

They make honey from nectar. When they fly to get nectar from a flower, they get pollen on their
bodies, so when they fly to another flower they pollinate! пЃЉ Some people keep bees as pets!
(Not actually, they keep them to make honey!) Bees are soaring insects. Bees have six legs and
four wings. Bees make honey and beeswax. There is a great deal of bees that are found in most of
the world.
Flower Color
Bees love flowers that are white, yellow, orange, blue, pink, and all the colors in between. Bees
cannot make out the color red though! Bees only fly to flowers that are red if they smell beautiful.
The flower color depends on the pollinator. Bees attracted to blur and violet colors. Hummingbirds

Some flowers have obvious Nectar guides. For some flowers only bees and certain insects can
spot the nectar guides. They can study them through ultraviolet vision. Some flowers have patterns

Management Reflection
Management skills play an imperative role in our lives and can be cultivated for a successful
career ahead in life. This program provided me an opportunity to work in a team and to overcome
the obstacles faced to produce deliverables. Through this course I have learnt how to resolve
conflicts with your colleagues and how tackle or avoid unforeseen problems while working in a
group environment.
I would like to focus more on my ability to adapt quickly to the diversity in a team as,
miscommunication hinders the growth of the team.
The team was formed using Tuckman s Team Model which has four following stages, Forming,
Storming, Norming and Performing. I have enlisted my views on how we formed the team and
the struggles we had to overcome. The team which was initially formed comprised of four
people, later we had two more addition to the team. The team members had a lot of anxiety in the
beginning as we were unknown to each other. To break the ice, I came up with an idea to plan an
informal meet, to make sure everyone was on the same page. Clear objectives were set and
expectations from the members were laid down.
During Week 1, we had the first team activity called Airplane Exercise . The appointed manager
and the designer for this task came up with a very different idea on the design of the aircraft.
Eventually we realized that the design was not feasible and the exercise was misinterpreted by us
as a team, but we were effective in changing the design quickly after our discussion with the
professor. By this activity I learned that how important it is to understand the requirement of the
activity instead of jumping to the solution. The other thing that I gathered from the group activity
was not to panic when you are on a strict timeline because it kills a lot of time.
As a team with diverse personalities and background, we had our inhibitions to express ourselves
freely to each other. Since everyone had a different approach to the problem at hand, we could not
reach to any consensus. To avoid problems, everyone was expected to stick to the agenda shared in
the course outline.
In the week 3, the personality test helped me to understand my team and their thoughts better. I
personally feel this was the time,

Stamp Out Smoking Ad Campaign Analysis
Like many states, the Arkansas Department of Health is thoroughly engaged in attempting to
improve the wellbeing of its citizens. In Arkansas, there are free tobacco quitline referral
programs. Once a referral is submitted, the tobacco or nicotine user will receive a call from a Quit
Counselor within 24 hours. Anyone who is referred should be planning a quit date within the next
30 days. Quit Counselors work with tobaccoand nicotineusers to create a customized, individual
quit plan, which includes free counseling services by phone, online, or both. Although the ADH
focuses on all aspects of smokers, the Arkansas Department of health has a strong passion to help
those who suffer from second hand smoke. Plastered throughout Arkansas cities and on nearly
every television, the ADH runs ads of children both young and old that suffer from second hand
smoke. Perhaps one of the strongest ads is the one that has a picture of a hand grenade and a

Assignment On Ways Of Knowing
Ways of Knowing Assignment Purdue Calumet Ways of Knowing Emily is an 83 year old
mother of three who was admitted to the ICU for sepsis from a UTI. She has been in the ICU for
two days. She has not been intubated during her stay, however her lactate level is rising. She is
awake, alert and oriented. Daughter is at bedside. During catheter care using chlorhexedine
wipes, she experienced increasing discomfort and complained of a strong burning sensation in
between her legs and vaginal area. She was becoming distraught. The Empirical Way of
Knowing provided the knowledge that would be relevant for teaching about the use of
chlorhexedine glucose products. This teaching was particularly useful because prior research
studies have found that CHG may cause skin irritation and anaphyllaxis reactions. The US FDA
in 1998 issued a Public Health Notice warning about the potential side effects to health care
professionals ( FDA Drug Safety Communication: FDA warns about rare but serious allergic
reactions with the skin antiseptic chlorhexidine gluconate, 2017) . The irritation was calmed
with the liberal use of cool water and a wash cloth, soothing the irritation. Patient and daughter
relaxed, both appreciated the simple solution. Daniel is a 39 year old male, admitted to the ICU
with end stage renal disease and above the knee amputation from an arterial line that went bad.
During his stay his bowels shut down, requiring emergency surgery. They removed all but 83 cm
of large bowel. He is septic and now intubated, lethargic, yet follows simple commands. There are
multiple areas of of drainage from pulled lines, amputation and surgery. End stage renal disease
requires him to be on CRRT, as hemodialysisis no longer an option. Physician s informed the
family after the emergency surgery that what the patient had left of his bowels was not sustainable
to life. It was explained to the patient as well. The family wants him to be comfortable, but do not
want to be the ones to decide on withdrawing care because they do not understand what it means.

Advantages Of Self-Service Technologies
Self Service Technologies are the technologies which make customers operate the service by
themselves without the helping of employees (Meuter et al. 2000). Currently, SST has already
been used in online operation which is familiar to customers, they always shopping(Childers et
al. 2001), buy tickets or reserve a service by using company s official websites. It is more
convenient because it is not limited by the location and time, consumers could operate at any
time. Moreover, SST is also adapted in the offline procedures. For example, the Automatic Teller
Machine when people withdraw the money, the self service machine in the kiosk when people
buy the goods, and also the stores for the customers to purchase in the offline store, etc. The
advantage of SST is that it could recognize customers preferences and provide the customized
services for them in the next time. Therefore, SST is a new way which replaces the traditional
method to serve customers, it not only benefits customers but also the corporate. In some way, the
easy process of service could reduce the cost for the company(Carline,... Show more content on

Therefore, the method to attract customers to keep interest in using SST is the most important
stage of the application of SST. Some authors focus more on how customers use and adapt the SST
by studying the factors of habit, self Efficacy, and satisfaction(Wang, C., Harris, J., Patterson, P.,
2013). It could be better for the company to know customers acceptance of SST in terms of
consumers point of view. Moreover, some other researchers identified the approaches of adoptionof
SST from the sight of the company. Stockdale, R. (2007) focus more on how to manage the
customer relationship in the self service environment of e tourism. It is important to keep a good
relationship with the customers, in that case, customers would keep a good mouth to the company

Analysis Of Cooley s The Looking Glass Self
According to Cooley s The Looking Glass Self , the degree of personal insecurity one displays in
social situations is determined by how they believe others think of them. In other words, how
we see ourselves, according to Cooley, does not come from who we really are but rather how we
believe other people see us. There are three steps to Cooley s claim: first, we imagine how others
see us. Second, we imagine how others are judging us. Lastly, we react accordingly. The
gendered commodification of children toys sets the stage by giving children at a very young age
preset judgements of how their supposed to act in society. While toys aimed at little boys mostly

Food dyes and prenatal stress given to rats does in fact influence behavior. An experiment
conducted on the rats confirmed that the stressed rats during the last days of pregnancy were more
hormonal than the unstressed rats during pregnancy. However, hormonal differences did not vary
between the two groups during non stress days. The amount of liquid consumed by the rats and the
rats body weight showed no signs of being affected by whether or not the rats consumed dye or tap
water. Scientists found that even though one group of rats were given both stress and food dye,
both variables did not affect one another. The rats that were given dye ingested an average of 1.71
milligrams of each dye per day. During the open field task, scientists observed that both age and
amount of stress of the rats affected the distance travelled. However, stress, age, and amount of dye
consumed did not interact with each other. At the ages of 1.5 months and 13 months, stress on the

Nuclear Power And The Atomic Bomb
One of the major technological break though in the late 19th and early 20th century was the birth

Bariatric Surgery
Bariatric Surgery
Indication:
No studies evaluate the commonly used indications for bariatric surgery. Consensus guidelines
suggest that the surgical treatment of obesity should be reserved for patients with a body mass
index (BMI) gt;40 kg/m(2) or with BMI gt;35 kg/m(2) and 1 or more significant co morbid
conditions, when less invasive methods of weight loss have failed and the patient is at high risk for
obesity associated morbidity and mortality (strength of recommendation: C, based on consensus
guidelines).
Types:
There are two basic types of weight loss surgery restrictive surgeries and malabsorptive/restrictive
surgeries. They help with weight loss in different ways.
Restrictive surgeries: work by physically restricting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It may continue for up to two years after the operation. Because of the rapid weight loss, health
conditions affected by obesity such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, sleep
apnea, heartburn, and other conditions often improve quickly. You ll probably also feel a dramatic
improvement in your quality of life.
Gastric bypass also has good long term results; studies have found that many people keep most of
the weight off for 10 years or longer.
The Cons. By design, surgeries like this impair the body s ability to absorb food. While that can
cause rapid weight loss, it also puts you at risk of serious nutritional deficiencies. The loss of
calcium and iron could lead to osteoporosis and anemia. You ll have to be very careful with your
diet and take supplements for the rest of your life.
Another risk of gastric bypass is dumping syndrome, in which food is dumped from the stomach
into the intestines too quickly, before it s been properly digested. About 85% of people who get a
gastric bypass have some dumping. Symptoms include nausea, bloating, pain, sweating, weakness,
and diarrhea. Dumping is often triggered by sugary or high carbohydrate foods, and adjusting the
diet helps. However, some experts actually see dumping syndrome as beneficial, in that it
encourages people to avoid foods that could lead to weight gain.
Unlike adjustable gastric banding, gastric bypass is generally

Bye Bye Birdie Analysis
The Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie premiered in 1960 and continues to enjoy popularity
among various audiences. Written and composed by Lee Adams and Charles Strouse, the
musical fictionalizes the real life induction of rock and roll idol Elvis Presley through the
character of Conrad Birdie into the United States Army. One important element of the musical s
plot is the excitement of a group of teenagers in a small Ohio town when they learn of the arrival of
a rock star and the prospect of one lucky girl getting a final good bye kiss. The version of Bye Bye
Birdiethat was reviewed for this analysis was an August 2017 stage production by Gulfport Little
Theatre. Like the original production of the musical, the Gulfport Little Theater production stayed
truthful to biographical details of Elvis s life and all actors were highly professional in their
representation of individual characters; however, unlike the original production, the set was
reduced to an absolute minimum which was clearly noticeable to the audience. Both productions
of the musical have identical plots and scene sequences. These may seem self explanatory;
however, it is noteworthy that directors often take artistic liberties in interpreting plays or
musicals, especially when they may appear dated to contemporary audiences. This, however, was
not the case in the 2017 production of Bye Bye Birdie because it stuck strictly to script; so much
so, that actors could have been exchanged across plays without any

Why Do White People Come Out Of Slavery
Firstly, i believe that it was very hard on native americans that were coming out of slavery
because they could not be around white or do many things white people could do therefore it
was like the white people had more expensive thing for example clean water and blacks had to
drink out of filthy water fountains. Also, blacks could not be in the same stores and things as
white people and blacks and whites were not able to talk without being made fun of or even be
investigated or even spied on because many and most people thought that whites should stay to their
own racejust as blacks meaning many people thought it was in the wrong for a white person and
a black person to be together or have any type of relationship. And, it was hard on blacks because
they could not have the same things and supplies in as great condition as whites and if they did
they were very lucky. Next, i think that if we would have accepted people and ourselves for who
we are and we would not have have this problem for example if people would see that we are all
humans and all should be treated the same we would all be better citizens in the world and things
around would... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The blacks couldn t really do anything when they became free because a lot of blacks were
slaves and didn t have jobs and businesses therefore the supply of food medicine and products we
need to be healthy to help us live longer they didn t have because they were slaves and didn t
make money to buy it and they couldn t go to a store because most stores were only for whites
and those were the stores that had the supplies they did need and so they really didn t have no
way of getting the materials needed to survive until people found jobs and not many could do that
because people were slaves and blacks had to have money to create businesses therefore it was very,
very, very hard on blacks coming out of

Examples Of Identity Ethics In A Cyborg Manifesto
Identity Ethics in a Cyborg Manifesto A Cyborg Manifesto is a ВґblasphemousВґ critique of
feminism written by Haraway at a time when unfettered patriarchal capitalism was taking new
forms enabled by emerged technological developments during the 1980s. She warns of scary new
networks (Haraway 1990, p.203) that are emerging; new systems of domination that will replace
traditional hegemonic structures of power. She foresees aВґВґsystem of world order analogous in
its novelty and scope to that created by industrial capitalism, (Ibid) that will emerge through
technological progress. She terms these new systems ВґВґthe informatics of dominationВґВґ(Ibid)
However, Haraway offers cause for hope; within the new technologies feminists can find potential...

The emphasis on identity politics, she argues, reproduces the dualisms and creates fragmented
subjectivities. These maintain the boundaries, creating factional politics as opposed to affinity and
solidarity between feminist activists. Thus the transgressory potential of the cyborg form is
proposed to create unity within feminist movements, transgressing the dualisms that identity
politics themselves create. Haraway writes an imaginative resource suggesting some very fruitful
couplings. (Haraway 1990, p.191) The cyborg emerges within her text as both a metaphor for a
postmodern identity, but also a lived reality that is the product of the new technological forms. It
embodies an oppositional consciousness that is exempt from dualisms, capable of confrontation
with the new forms of

  • 2. Institutional Slavery And The Slave System Institutional Slavery Vijay Balusu 0 Period To regulate the relationship between the owner and the slave, and to institutionalize slavery, the Slave Codes were established. These codes were laws in colonies which defined the rights of the masters and slaves, along with the legal sanctions over the black population; they generally placed harsh restrictions on a slave s freedom and gave the owner absolute power over him/her. Asiento System The Indians were dying of disease and overwork under the Spanish rule. So they introduced the Asiento System to make up the labor shortage. Under this system, the Spanish and any other country could carry African slaves to the Americas but had to pay a tax to the Spanish crown for every slave imported. It lasted from 1543 to 1834. Spain The Spanish had a Slave Code before they acquired colonies in the New World, the same code which applied to their colonies. Las Siete Partidas was what the slave code was called and it was written in the 13th Century. The Spanish Slave Code was special because it acknowledged the fact that slavery was contrary to natural justice and that it was an evil act. But they thought it was a necessary evil, necessary for the economic development of the colonies. This caused many problems for the Spanish because the slaves naturally revolted because it was implied that the natural state of a man was freedom, this reasoning gave them justification to revolt. The first slave revolt in the Spanish colonies was in 1522 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Pros And Cons Of Bilinguals Language is an important way to communicate with people around us in the world, but many people around us speak more than one language. Bilinguals are people who can speak at least two languages. There is a lot of debating on whether monolinguals have better memory or bilinguals. Many research has shown similar results with similar experiments. It is true that monolinguals do know more words in a language, but when it comes to memory, bilinguals have a better memory (Kudo Swanson, 2014). Bilinguals do make grammar mistakes a lot and mix up the languages to get their point across but they are able to deliver their point across. Overall, they are better able to focus on what to remember. In all of the studies, I have reviewed bilinguals have outperformed monolinguals. Bilinguals are able to focus more on the task that is assigned to them as well as eliminate the distraction around them. Bilinguals have learned how to balance two languages in their life, they speak a different language at home and a different language at school. Bilinguals are able to pick up cues in their everyday life to deal with any type of situation. Bilinguals are able to attack the situation quickly and accurately than monolinguals Bilinguals do have outperform monolinguals in all tasks except in vocabulary. Body We always hear that knowing two languages is better than one, it will take you farther in future. So, the people who speak two languages are bilinguals. A study conducted by Blom et. al ... • 4. Self-Reliance Vs Transcendentalism Autonomy Being able to rely on one s own capabilities and judgements or resources is called self reliance. Self reliance was a key attribute to obtain during the Transcendentalism time period. This period was a direct reaction of the Age of Reason. The Transcendentalist era lasted from about 1826 to 1860 and also ran as a part of the Age of Romance. During this time, the primary beliefs were that people understood that God and everything going on was in direct correlation with nature. Another popular belief was that everything was connected by an oversoul. Both authors contributed a huge amount to the Transcendentalist era, even though one actually lived out what the other one preached. Although inferior to Walden, or Life in the Woods, Self Reliance is still a strong transcendental piece about being able to fully rely on yourself, it is just not as in depth and detailed about the true transcendental life. Both Walden, or Life in the Woods, and Self Reliance, show examples of independence, reliance on one s abilities, and having the ability to make a life on your own. The Transcendentalist time period was truly one for the history books. An immense character that fills the room with his split purple lips, and lumbed ears, and yellow eyes, like a wolf: he wasn t listening to anyone but himself. Until one time, he was taken for good, and he never returned; at least as the mean nigger he used to be. Now, Hard Rock was a tame man. More of a joker if we re really describing him in full: with his silly grin that s forever plastered on his face. The doctors fried him with electricity until he might as well have been the key on the end of Ben Franklin s kite. The combine as Chief Bromden likes to call it. This theme of conformity and the use of nigh deadly force to get rebels to conform is also seen in this poem: the doctors...bore a hole through his head, and shot electricity through the rest . Visual imagery here is shocking in more ways than one. Cutting a hole through someone s head is cruel, vicious, and animalistic, but it seems to be a perfectly normal thing to do in the eyes of the combine. And as if that is not enough, after evoking the horrible image of Hard Rock s brain being torn out of his head, whatever is left is put through shock therapy. Not even Hard Rock could endure that without taking a visual toll. And that toll turns out to be his conformity to society. He now is as docile as an everyday toddler with the IQ similar to a vegetable. What was once a towering man that intimidates yet commands the respect of the entire prison, is now reduced to a peaceful giant who takes exactly 3 minutes to tell you his name . This change from menacing criminal to being harmless as a housefly, is further seen ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The outer orbits have more energy than the inner orbits. Atoms do not emit radiation, such as light, when the electrons are in the fixed orbit, but an electron can move to a different orbit. If an electron moves down to an orbit with less energy, energy is released in the form of radiation a light quantum. If the electron moves from an orbit closer to the nucleus to one farther from the nucleus, energy is absorbed. The frequencies and wavelengths of the light quanta are unique for each atom. Accordingly, lately, researchers gave a special attention to subjects regarding Police, and implicitly to the public image of the institution. Generally, the police image is conceptualized based on three main categories: overall image, outcomes and process (Mastrofski, 1998). The overall image of police reflects perceptions, feelings and evaluations about the police in general. As Gallagher, Maguire, Mastrofski, Reisig (2001) stated, this area includes various general descriptions and analysis of the confidence and trust in the police (e.g., Hough, Jackson Bradford, 2013; Stanko, Jackson, Bradford Kohl, 2012), satisfaction with ... Evaluation relates to goodness or badness, morality, utility, etc., Potency to magnitude, social power, strength, expansiveness, etc., whereas Activity relates to speed, animation, spontaneity, etc. (Heise, 2010). Faith played a very important role throughout the book, from normal practices of faith in the beginning of the book to Corrie using faith to keep strong in the labor camps. One quote that I feel describes this is, But if God has shown us bad times ahead it s enough for that he knows about them. The faster your state expands the harder it is to maintain control and placing a nation under the support of those who would advocate it be left intact is the lesser of two evils. The second way is that both of their policies would have been in opposition to Southern Democrats. This is because Texas would have entered the union a slave state and Southerners would have been opposed to anti slavery Northerners holding office. This party iteration of the Democrat seems to have more in common with the Democratic Republicans of the Jeffersonian era rather than the Democrats around the time President Abraham Lincoln was elected. • 30. I Heard A Fly Buzz-When I Died By Emily Dickinson Emily Dickinson s carefully thought out poem, I heard a Fly buzz when I died, discusses how death is an inevitable experience that everyone faces. Dickinson is a well known poet for writing about death and topics relating to death. The set up of the poem conveys an atmosphere in which someone dies. A simple fly s buzzdisrupts this quiet and heavy atmosphere surrounding the person s deathbed which causes the reader to focus more on the buzzof the fly than the person who is dying. The speaker is coming to terms with the fact that she is dying and tells of how she is giving away her keepsakes and belongings. Her giving away her belongings conveys that she is ready to die, however, just as she is about to pass, the fly interrupts again. The fly is a seemingly small, irrelevant bug, but in this poem, it becomes the focal point to show that deathcan be inconsequential. The speaker of this poem recounts her last moments before death experiencing many emotions such as loneliness, calmness, and stress. These emotions make the speaker notice the insignificant aspects surrounding her in the room causing her to realize that death is not an extraordinary experience. Dickinson s effective use of symbolism helps create an atmosphere in which the speaker is able to perceive her death in different ways. The Stillness in the Room was like the Stillness in the Air between the Heaves of Storm, is symbolism for how the atmosphere in the room was so still when the speaker died (2 4). The moments before death are like the calm between a storm, and even though there is no rain in between a storm, the atmosphere is still heavy just as how the room is when the speaker died. Once the speaker died, she was able to notice how quiet the room was, and she perceived how different the atmosphere was from before she died too after her death. As the poem starts to build up, Dickinson mentions that a King is coming to the speaker s death, which is either death itself or in reference to a religious figure. In line seven, For that last Onset when the King Be witnessed in the Room, the King seems to be approaching her as she dies, and if the King is God, then God could be coming to take the speaker into the afterlife(7 8). ... I have enlisted my views on how we formed the team and the struggles we had to overcome. The team which was initially formed comprised of four people, later we had two more addition to the team. The team members had a lot of anxiety in the beginning as we were unknown to each other. To break the ice, I came up with an idea to plan an informal meet, to make sure everyone was on the same page. Clear objectives were set and expectations from the members were laid down. During Week 1, we had the first team activity called Airplane Exercise . The appointed manager and the designer for this task came up with a very different idea on the design of the aircraft. Eventually we realized that the design was not feasible and the exercise was misinterpreted by us as a team, but we were effective in changing the design quickly after our discussion with the professor. By this activity I learned that how important it is to understand the requirement of the activity instead of jumping to the solution. The other thing that I gathered from the group activity was not to panic when you are on a strict timeline because it kills a lot of time. As a team with diverse personalities and background, we had our inhibitions to express ourselves freely to each other. Since everyone had a different approach to the problem at hand, we could not reach to any consensus. To avoid problems, everyone was expected to stick to the agenda shared in the course outline. The Empirical Way of Knowing provided the knowledge that would be relevant for teaching about the use of chlorhexedine glucose products. The US FDA in 1998 issued a Public Health Notice warning about the potential side effects to health care professionals ( FDA Drug Safety Communication: FDA warns about rare but serious allergic reactions with the skin antiseptic chlorhexidine gluconate, 2017) . The irritation was calmed with the liberal use of cool water and a wash cloth, soothing the irritation. Patient and daughter relaxed, both appreciated the simple solution. Daniel is a 39 year old male, admitted to the ICU with end stage renal disease and above the knee amputation from an arterial line that went bad. During his stay his bowels shut down, requiring emergency surgery. They removed all but 83 cm of large bowel. He is septic and now intubated, lethargic, yet follows simple commands. One important element of the musical s plot is the excitement of a group of teenagers in a small Ohio town when they learn of the arrival of a rock star and the prospect of one lucky girl getting a final good bye kiss. The version of Bye Bye Birdiethat was reviewed for this analysis was an August 2017 stage production by Gulfport Little Theatre. Like the original production of the musical, the Gulfport Little Theater production stayed truthful to biographical details of Elvis s life and all actors were highly professional in their representation of individual characters; however, unlike the original production, the set was reduced to an absolute minimum which was clearly noticeable to the audience. Both productions of the musical have identical plots and scene sequences. These may seem self explanatory; however, it is noteworthy that directors often take artistic liberties in interpreting plays or musicals, especially when they may appear dated to contemporary audiences. This, however, was not the case in the 2017 production of Bye Bye Birdie because it stuck strictly to script; so much so, that actors could have been exchanged across plays without any ... • 43. Why Do White People Come Out Of Slavery Firstly, i believe that it was very hard on native americans that were coming out of slavery because they could not be around white or do many things white people could do therefore it was like the white people had more expensive thing for example clean water and blacks had to drink out of filthy water fountains. Also, blacks could not be in the same stores and things as white people and blacks and whites were not able to talk without being made fun of or even be investigated or even spied on because many and most people thought that whites should stay to their own racejust as blacks meaning many people thought it was in the wrong for a white person and a black person to be together or have any type of relationship. And, it was hard on blacks because they could not have the same things and supplies in as great condition as whites and if they did they were very lucky. Next, i think that if we would have accepted people and ourselves for who we are and we would not have have this problem for example if people would see that we are all humans and all should be treated the same we would all be better citizens in the world and things around would... • 44. Examples Of Identity Ethics In A Cyborg Manifesto Identity Ethics in a Cyborg Manifesto A Cyborg Manifesto is a ВґblasphemousВґ critique of feminism written by Haraway at a time when unfettered patriarchal capitalism was taking new forms enabled by emerged technological developments during the 1980s. She warns of scary new networks (Haraway 1990, p.203) that are emerging; new systems of domination that will replace traditional hegemonic structures of power. She foresees aВґВґsystem of world order analogous in its novelty and scope to that created by industrial capitalism, (Ibid) that will emerge through technological progress. She terms these new systems ВґВґthe informatics of dominationВґВґ(Ibid) However, Haraway offers cause for hope; within the new technologies feminists can find potential... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The emphasis on identity politics, she argues, reproduces the dualisms and creates fragmented subjectivities. These maintain the boundaries, creating factional politics as opposed to affinity and solidarity between feminist activists. Thus the transgressory potential of the cyborg form is proposed to create unity within feminist movements, transgressing the dualisms that identity politics themselves create. Haraway writes an imaginative resource suggesting some very fruitful couplings. (Haraway 1990, p.191) The cyborg emerges within her text as both a metaphor for a postmodern identity, but also a lived reality that is the product of the new technological forms. It embodies an oppositional consciousness that is exempt from dualisms, capable of confrontation with the new forms of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
