Conformity In Social Psychology
The subject of conformity is considered a primary point of research in social psychology. Many
social psychologists throughout history have experimented and evaluated the attributes of
conformity, concluding key factors that contribute to conformity. With consideration, it is arguable
that culture and group size are two of the most accountable factors in social conformity. Evidently,
research in these areas are both highly notable and in abundance; with respect to studies such as the
Asch Line Experiment (Asch, 1951) and the Stanford Prison Experiment (Zimbardo, 1971). Social
psychological theories such as The Chameleon Effect (Chartrand Bragh, 1999) also suggest
evidence of conformism in society. Furthermore, the power and influence of minority groups
(Minority Influence Theory; Charlan Jeanne Nemeth, 2009; Moscovivi and Lage, 1976) can
importantly provide insight into not only how a minority can influence a majority in society but
also show an alternative argument to the Asch paradigm. Fundamentally, all three factors that
contribute to conformity are in attempt to describe human behaviour.
Held in common belief, conformity has been long considered to an extent a product of cultural
conditions in social psychology. Popular assumption regarded conformity of a society, singular and
belonging of individual cultures globally and with respect to each, evidence was apparent of
different types of conformity depending on the cultures characteristics (Peabody, 1985).

Starbucks Final Case Study
CASE STUDY: STARBUCKS CORPORATION (SBUX)
Frank Mabson
BUS 411: Strategic Planning
Professor Oma Lopes
Midway College Online
Historical Background
The name Starbucks came from a character that was chief mate aboard the Pequod in the novel
Moby Dick by Herman Melville (Rolph, 2012). Originally, the name for the company was Pequod
until one of the original co owners vetoed it and agreed on the name Starbucks instead. Now, we
associate the name Starbucks with the company logo, which features a two tailed Greek mythology
figure called siren.
The Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) is an American, multinational coffee chain formed in 1985.

These are just some of what gives Starbucks the competitive advantage. By staying ahead of the
competition, Starbucks is not only able to set industry trends but also satisfy its customers,
employees and shareholders.
The basis of the competitive advantage Starbucks has on the coffee shop industry stems from its
ability to market its brand and live up to its mission statement. In addition, Starbucks doesn t rely
solely on its products for obtaining and sustaining the upper hand. According to MarketRealist.com,
when customers enter a Starbucks establishment they are taking on an entire process and
experience (Krikorian, 2014). By choosing Starbucks, customers can customize their drinks to
perfection by selecting one of its 30 different options of premier coffee blends. Following the order
process, customers can enjoy the great atmosphere by listening to music or perhaps enjoy taking
part in friendly conversations with pleasant workers and patrons. Simply put, Starbucks thrives on a
connected customer experience that differentiates them from the rest of the industry. Also, retail

morning rituals. As a result, they have the opportunity not only to serve loyal customers, but also
essentially to become part of their lives (Krikorian, 2014).

The Role Of Women In Raisin In The Sun And Trifles
Men and women are constantly debating what their true role in life is. In a family, the women
were expected to do the laundry, cook, and clean, while the men went to work and made money
for their family. This idea has changed drastically over the years. Women are now able to get an
education and work if they d like. Sixty years ago, this would not have been possible. Most men
and women now share the housework, and both have full time jobs. In Raisin in the Sun by
Lorraine Hansberry and Trifles by Susan Glaspellthe women struggle with being unheard by their
husbands. In Raisin in the Sun, Ruth Younger struggles with her husband, Walter Lee, when he
does not listen to her when they discuss their money problems. Walter strives to have more
money, so he can provide his family with nice things. He is tired of being overlooked by the
white men that he works for and wants to be more like them. Walter hates the job that he has
because he must obey a white man. He constantly feels like the women in his life do not listen to
his struggles and confides in alcohol instead of speaking with his family about his emotions. Walter
Lee constantly belittles his wife saying, that just goes to show you what women understand about
the world...nothing will happen for you in this world less you pay somebody off! (Hansberry 81).
Again, the women s opinions and thoughts are overlooked by the men in the play. In the end,
Walter Lee chooses to do the right thing and becomes the hero. When

The Relevance Of Photosynthesis And Nature
The Relevance Of Photosynthesis To Nature
The natural light that shines onto the Earth is said to be the driving force behind all life. It s
fascinating to find out that the green matter around us that we tend to take for granted is mankind
s source of energy which is a necessity for every living being even in its lowest form. We can
literally define photosynthesis as synthesis with the help of light . It is also defined as the basic
process of life whereby plants absorb energy from sunlight and through a series of processes
convert that energy to chemical energy that is later consumed by other living entities. As Julius
Robert Mayer asserts, Nature has put itself the problem how to catch in flight light streaming to
the earth and to store the most elusive of all powers in rigid form. This turns out to be an
economic provision to which the existence of mankind is inexorably bound. (Rabinowitch and
Govindjee, 9). We will examine how this process keeps our planet alive and will also demonstrate
how plants distribute energy to all members of the ecosystem through a series of chain reactions.
The following chemical equation gives us a general overview of the entire process:
CO2 + H2O + ENERGY (PHOTONS) CX (H2 O) y + O2
This means carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) from the atmosphere together with kinetic
energy from the sun that results in the variable carbohydrate group (CX (H2 O) y) and oxygen (O2
). We observe that the resulting expression on the right

Methamphetamine Addiction Research Paper
Abstract
Methamphetamine addiction is a serious public health problem with many consequences and
complications. Significant illness, including cardiovascular, infectious, pulmonary, dental diseases
and other systems complications are associated with methamphetamine acute or chronic use.
Methamphetamine dependence also causes serious cognitive impairments that can persist during
abstinence and negatively affect recovery outcomes. There are no approved medications for the
treatment of methamphetamine dependence. Efficient treatments include behavioral and
psychological approaches of contingency management, cognitive behavioral therapy, and
motivational enhancement strategies.

Don t You Accuse Me
Don t you accuse me of that! You know it isn t true! Stop lying to me, to the team and to
yourself. The door slams, leaving the rest of us in a tense silence. Outside, the sun dims, casting
shadows on the tear stricken face of my friends. Through the thin, lifeless walls, we all hear the
continued argument. You know I was right. Stop defending her! Kendall screams at Stella and
Erica. I can imagine her face; the way her cheeks redden and her jaw clenches; the way her fists
clench together and her toes curl in her white converse. If you aren t going to take my side, then
get out. I don t want to hear it. I lean my head against the wall, my eyes puffy and red, thankful
for the soft light. Again, the door is forced open, and heavy steps echo through the room. The day
started normally. We woke up, had breakfast, went out and explored Gothenburg, Sweden, and just
hung out. My soccer team and I decided to start up a scrimmage with another team that was
attending the Youth World Cup; they agreed. We started the game, but then I left because it
started raining. My feet, soaked by rain, slosh up the stairs, leaving glistening footprints in their
wake. The thundering rain pounds against the thin windows, as if threatening to shatter them at
any moment. The burning sensation in my knees becomes more prominent as the weight of my
bags seem to increase. I force my head up and see the room I m staying in; a smile spreads across
my face and a groan escapes someone s lips

The Theme of “The Alchemist,” by Paulo Coelho Essay
The Theme of The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho is, always follow your dreams and listen to your
heart. At the start of the novel Santiago does not know what he should do when he is confronted by
his dream. But by the end of the novel Santiago completely trusts his heart to guide him though life.
Santiago s story shows him learning and living out the theme of the novel.
I think Paulo passed on his message about following your heart quite well. Through Santiago he
showed that you must endure some hardship before you are rewarded for your efforts. I think I
will always remember Santiago s journey and the lessons he learned along the way. I enjoyed
watching Santiago grow and learn from the experiences he gained through his journey to find ...

Several years later, Santiago had enough money to journey back home but he decided he should
continue on his journey despite his past experiences. I m not sure I could do the same thing as
Santiago.
I believe that this novel was meant to be read by people who are old enough to understand different
struggles people sometimes need to endure to achieve goal. If someone were not to understand this
concept then the novel would be empty, for them.
The most interesting thing I found about the novel was the way Paulo build up Santiago s hopes
and then destroyed them. Paulo not only did this several times but he also chose to do it right
after Santiago thought he had learned a lesson about life. Most books I have read don t build up
and destroy the main characters hopes so perniciously.
I find that Santiago s journey is fairly unlikely to ever occur in real life. At the end of the novel,
Santiago digs for his treasure but finds nothing, however the one man in the world that would tell
him another place so search just so happens to be right there waiting. The odds of this happening
are very low at best. Another thing that is impossible to occur in real life is someone turning lead
into gold. This is not something that could be done.
I would defiantly recommend this book to a friend or a family member. I fervently enjoyed The
Alchemist, and I think that most people would enjoy reading about Santiago. The novel is
universal in its ability to tell a story and

I m Vietnamese American. I came to America twelve years ago. I d say I am equally influenced by
both Vietnamese and American culture. Growing up as a Catholic, I learned that happiness is the
life that we receive when we are in union with God in heaven. How do we get there is something I
had to learn from both textbooks and experiences. My parents would often talk about growing up,
getting a job, starting a family, and live happily. They also talk about how religionleads you to
happiness when you values love and kindness. Religion specifically taught me values such as
persistence, perseverance, humility, forgiveness, and charity. These values is reflected in the way I

Conflict Management Styles Among Corporate Executives
Choosing a topic and problem for a signature assignment which is very close to a research topic
could be a hurdle. It requires good literature review which is derived by tapping and evaluating

when there is disagreement and misunderstanding which stands as major key characteristics of
human relationships. The relationship could be domestic, national, or international (Spiroska,

conflict could arise due to failure of the employer, not honoring certain agreed bargaining. Henry

Isolation in Winesburg Ohio and Death in The Woods
In 1919, Sherwood Anderson composed his work Winesburg Ohio, which depicts the inner lives
of small town America. Anderson s fascination to explore what s beneath the surface of human
lives results in another story in 1933 called Death In The Woods . These two works, incidentally,
share a common theme of isolation. The characters in these works, are portrayed as grotesques or
people who live their lives by one truth, thus living a life of falsehood and isolation from the rest
of the world. This essay will examine the theme of isolation in the two works described, and will
also relate it to Anderson s idea of the grotesque .
In Winesburg Ohio, the reader is first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These short stories are linked through the character of George Willard, who is essentially the main
character. Because of this, Winesburg is considered a Bildungsroman, the character development of
George the artist to George the man . His development occurs through his contact and dealing with
the characters in the stories. Each character offers something new in his development, as in advice
or wisdom. These grotesques rely on George to take notice of their isolation and falsehood, in
hopes of George publishing their truths : Each in turn comes forward to offer his secret (the
material of art)
And to give up whatever fragmentary wisdom he may possess Toward the development of the artist
who will be the spokesman. For everyone. (Fussell, p.111). So, it is through these encounters with
George that the reader is introduced to the strong sense of isolation and underdevelopment the
characters possess.
The first example, is in the story Hands . Here, the character of Wing Biddlbaum is introduced,
and right from the start, appears to have isolated himself from the rest of society. Among all the
people of Winesburg but one had come close to him. (p.27). This one person, is of course
George Willard, who is portrayed in this first story as a friend of Wing Biddlbaum. George is
someone he can talk to, break free temporarily of his isolation. In addition to talking openly with
George enthusiastically, he also was very expressive and active

The Role Of Sexuality In African American Literature
Last semester s Honors English lecture was on Sexual Identities in African American Literature.
However, the topics often broadened to other areas, one of the most recurring being that of female
sexuality and whether literature depicted it as pure and nearly asexual or tainted and virulent. I
think this topic is a pressing issue in today s culture; many states are fine tuning abortion, rape, and
gender identification laws as I write this. I also saw much attention being paid to this topic in two
of the novels we read this semester: Mary Wollstonecrafts The Wrongs of Woman, or Maria, and
Mary Robinson s The Natural Daughter. However, I found the relationship between female
sexuality and its relation to the concepts of sensibility or rationality... Show more content on

He tried many times to persuade her to stay and be financially cared for by him, but Martha
refused to give any credit to the reputation that followed her everywhere; she would never
pretend to be anyone but whom she actually was and therefore put her sexuality on hold. She
loved Lord Francis, but Mr. Morley was her husband (268). Even when her sister Julia becomes
Mr. Morley s mistress, Martha will not, in the smallest instance, violate the proprieties of
wedded life (278). It is not until two events occurred that Martha was willing to allow her
sexuality to become primary: one, her husband dies with full knowledge that he was wrong
about Martha and had ruined her for nothing, and two, Martha learns that Lord Francis is not
Fanny s deceiving father, but the child s uncle, brother to Fanny s biological mother (293 5). As
speedily as the decencies of life would permit, Lord Francis solicited and received the hand of
Mrs. Morley (296). For the character of Martha, rationality and forthrightness far outweigh the
sensibility of and desire to act on her sexuality. She denies herself a relationship with the man she
loves for years because of the vows she made to her husband. She would rather experience the
pain of loneliness and self denial than be left with personal guilt and shame for breaking the vows

The Effects Of Fairy Tales
When thinking about fairy tales many of us, if not all of us, revert back to childhood. When we
were children some of the best memories are those of the movies we used to watch; Cinderella,
Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, The Frog Prince, things of those sorts. What many of us do not
know is that fairy tales go back farther than that of Disney s productions. In this course, we have
been learning about different views of fairy tales. One of the views that we have focused a lot on
is told by Bruno Bettelheim in his book, The Uses of Enchantment. In his eyes fairy tales have the
most effect on children and the way children grow up. The second view that we have learned
about is J.R.R Tolkien s in his essay, On Fairy Stories . Tolkien claims that

Tolkien first states that recovery includes return and renewal of health. [Recovery] is a re
gaining regaining of a clear view. (Tolkien, J.R.R (1947 ed.) p.19) By this Tolkien means that
recovery is not seeing the world for what it is but rediscovery of the banal, of the day to day
world. Recovery is seeing things in a different light, and that is what fairy tales help to do. Fairy
tales take the everyday world that we live and paint them in a light that allows us to offset what
is going on in our world today, or to restore the visions that we have of our lives. He even relates
this theory of recovery to himself in the quote For the story maker who allows himself to be free
with Nature can be her lover not her slave. It was in fairy stories that I first divined the potency
of the words, and the wonder of the things, such as stone, and wood, and iron; tree and grass;
house and fire; bread and wine. (Tolkien, J.R.R (1947 ed.) p.20). I agree strongly with this in the
sense that without these stories of fantasy how are we ever going to recover and see our world as
great again with all the bad that happens. Children are not to be concerned with the horrors of the
world as adults

Essay on Why William Won the Battle of Hastings
Why William Won the Battle of Hastings
The Battle of Hastings in 1066 saw Harold the king of England defeated by William, Duke of
Normandy. It was a great victory for William, he became King of England and was called William
the Conqueror. There were many reasons for William s victory such as religious support, a well
prepared army, weather, more effective weapons and most importantly superior tactics. Another
important factor, which occurs in most battles in history, is that of luck. Throughout the battle it
seemed that William was more fortunate than Harold. As much as William earned victory, Harold
made some bad judgments and serious tactical mistakes.

This meant they were organized and knew what to do when the time came to set sail for
England. Everything was perfect for William except for the strong winds from the north meant
it was not possible for his fleet to cross the Channel. He and his men were so desperate that they
even prayed for a south wind. God or luck was on their side as after a thunderstorm the winds
changed to a more favourable southerly direction and they seized the opportunity and set sail.
Whilst sailing to England William s fleet got caught in a storm and they had to stop at the
Somme estuary. This should have a disaster for William but luck was on his side, as this way the
crossing to England was shorter and when he was finally able to cross, Harold was in the north of
England.
William s landing was well planned and helped by intelligence gathered in the previous months by
Normans living in England. He had studied Caesar s invasion in 55 BC and was not going to
make the same mistakes that he did. For example Caesar did not take the weather over the Channel
into consideration and beached his boats in the wrong place, getting them damaged. Williams s
decision to land at Pevensey, a lagoon west of Hastings with very few people there, was important.
The lagoon provided shelter from the weather and when the

The number of burns that require medical attention in the United States are 1.1 million every year.
Burns are injuries caused either by heat, chemicals, sunlight, radiation, or electricity (Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, (n.d.). Statistics show most burn injuries for women and children
occur in the home and for men they typically occur at the workplace. They are classified as first,
second, or third degree, usually by how deep and severely they breach the skins surface (World
Health Organization, (2017, January). It s important to know the signs and symptoms of a burn
injury to ensure the right kind of medical treatment is provided.
Classifications
First degree burns only cause damage to the outer layer of the skin also known as the epidermis.
Second degree burn damage extends as far as the dermis layer, which is the layer beneath the
epidermis (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (n.d.). These burns sometimes will need a
skin graft to enclose the area and protect it while in the healing process. After having damaged or
completely destroyed both the top two layers of the skin, a third degree burn extends past the hair
follicles and sweat glands causing damage to the underlying tissue. These kinds of burns will
almost always require the use of a skin graft (John Hopkins Health Medicine ... Show more content

Second degree burns will have a deep reddening of the skin, blisters, and may include loss of
some of the skin. They sometimes tend to have a glossy appearance from leaking fluid (World
Health Organization, (2017, January). Third degree burns will appear white, brown, black, or even
charred with the skin having a tendency to appear leathery and dry. Unfortunately there is no
feeling in these areas because the nerve endings are damaged (National Institute of General Medical
Sciences, (2016,

Support Group Support Groups
We will be leading a support group for women residents of the Stearns County jail. We will have
adult coloring books for the women, if they wish to color during our group time. Additionally, we
hope to have conversations about self esteem, healthy relationships, addictions, and any other
topics that the women would like to discuss. Purpose The purpose of our group is to provide
overall support for the women and boost the self confidence of the women residents. We recognize
that these women often have a low self esteem; therefore, we hope our meetings will increase self
confidence in the women. We will conduct the group by first letting the residents know that there
are boundaries and rules; no interrupting others, no judgement of others,... Show more content on

Cloud, MN 56303. Due to Stearns County being a public entity, their financial resources come
from the government and property taxes. Staffing at the Stearns County Jail consists of program
directors, correctional officers, and volunteers. The demographics within the jail are always
changing and it houses both males and females; however, our group will only be open to the
female residents. Membership Women residents of the Stearns County Jail can be members of
our group. This population was chosen because we both thought it would be a new learning
experience to work within the jail system; in addition, our supervisor at the jail suggested that he
needed an all female group. Furthermore, we liked the idea of stepping outside of our comfort
zones. We also though this group would be a little more challenging, yet we have high hopes
that this will be a great learning experience for the both of us. Recruitment We have created a
poster that our supervisor will hang up in the jail. The poster will include our group name, the
day and times we will meet as a group, and some topics we can discuss. We also made note that
we will be supplying adult coloring books. There will be a signup sheet provided by the jail staff
and women will sign up for our group prior to us meeting. The poster will hopefully interest the
women residents and get them to attend. Composition Members must be female. Members also
must be residents at the Stearns County Jail.

The Pros And Cons Of GPS Tracking
GPS Tracking Stands on One Level with Data Privacy and Security: Fact or Myth
The term Global Positioning System conjures up images of GPS devices being used in space
age technology and vehicle navigation systems. GPS tracking devices have also become a part of
our daily lives today. However, many people are sceptical about the use of these handy devices.
Many people claim that they will face data privacy and security issues on using it. But, how much
of this statement is true? Do others have access to your information unless and until you share
them? It is true that the person having access to the GPS tracker will know the exact location of the
concerned individual.
With the advancement of technology and GPS manufacturers striving to strengthen security
aspects, the chances of data being leaked have become negligible. Many families and business
owners have started to trust the system and are applying it in different ways. In fact, these
applications have made its way into animal tracking, farming and even gaming technology. Animal
tracking helps in monitoring endangered species and their behaviour in such way, so they and their
habitat can be better protected. GPS system is being used in games to make them more attractive ...

Medical Practice Initiative
Medical Practice Initiative. One of the main drivers of the Medical Practice Initiative (MPI),
aside from patient safety, is the acquisition, maintenance, and minimization of cognitive and
psychomotor skill decay of healthcare personnel. A primary focus is maintenance of military
and medical skills throughout a caregiver s career (7). There is some crossover between the
CCTI and the MPI as both apply to healthcare providers, but the MPI is more closely tied to Role
3 through Role 5 skills and procedures as well as common skills and procedures performed by non
military healthcare providers during routine care delivery. Capability gaps addressed and identified
as subsets of MPI are: Fostering Clinical Excellence Competency and Certification; Patient
Variation (Anatomical) and Pathology Scenarios; Training Measurements Metrics and Evaluation
Criteria; and Patient Safety. Fostering Clinical Excellence Competency and Certification There
remain many questions regarding how and why individuals learn. The optimal methods to train and
educate an individual need to be studied, as well as team training for optimal outcomes. Inserting
multiple variables into individual training further complicates the issue. The See One, Do One,
Teach One method has been used in the past, however, with simulation systems, the model should
move toward See Many, Do Many, Teach Many as it is understood that simulation systems are
relevant for novices as well as for experts providing

Love s Path- Personal Narrative Essay
Love s Path Personal Narrative
They say it is better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all. Those words are not
comforting to me. But, I love you Deborah, he says as we sit on the couch in my basement, his
voice shaky, and uncertain. He looks into my eyes as if pleading, no, begging for forgiveness. I
don t recognize these eyes that once provided me with happiness, security, and comfort. These eyes
used to reassure me that indeed he did used to love me. It hurts to look into them; I turn away.
His face was just a blur, as tears collected, clouded my eyes and trailed down my cheeks until I
could taste them. My mind has conflicting thoughts. Forgive him. Don t forgive him. Say I love

We had been going out for nine months and five days (not that I had been counting). It doesn t
seem long, but it felt like an eternity. I had never been so happy. The day he kissed the other
girl, he threw that all away. Thinking of everything that he told me, he said he would never
leave or deceive me. Our love was gone . That returns me from the distant memory to the present
like a slap in the face. Please, I m sorry he says begging. I ask him to leave. He gets up from the
couch to leave. Am I making a mistake? Maybe it can work out? I think and imagine his arms
around me, hugging me, holding me tight. I couldn t bear. The pain in my heart feels too strong to
endure. I have to stop myself from calling, running after him.
My cries turn into hysterics. I am angry. I feel so much pain, like I just got shot down, the bullets
piercing through my soul. I feel so alone. For days I cried myself to sleep; in the morning when I
woke up people asked me how I felt, but I lied convincingly because I did not want to reveal the
fact that I was suffering.
Even weeks after the breakup, I would jump up when I heard the phone ringing, thinking it was

Essay On Chlamydia
There are about 19 million new cases of Sexually Transmitted Infections in the United States each
year. There are more than 700, 000 cases of gonorrhea each year and incidents of chlamydia have
steadily increased within the past two decades. STI s are on the rise among the young adults in the
United States and evidence suggests that young adults are most at risk due to an increase in sexual
activities. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are the most common curable diseases reported in the US.
These widespread incidents have made STI s an epidemic in the United States. An estimated 2.9
million new cases of chlamydia infections occur in the US each year. Chlamydia is a bacterial
infection, more common than gonorrhea and syphilis; according to STI surveillance in 2010.

Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame Essay
Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame
To some, including myself, baseball is the greatest sport that has ever been played. It is a game
played by two opposing teams made of multiple players, but only nine players per team play at the
same time. To be part of one of the thirty teams that get to play professional baseball, a player has to
play the game extremely well (www.baseballhalloffame.com). When a player plays the game
better than most have played he gets rewarded, usually with lots of money in a big contract. Then
there are those rare players, the 244 elite players of the game that have already been inducted into
the Hall of Fame. Being inducted in the Hall of Fame is the utmost of baseball fame. The players

He did not report cash money he accepted for signing baseballs and photographs at baseball card
shows (Reston 1997). It is still to this day not proven that Rose did bet on the baseball team that he
was managing. Rose himself still holds true to his statement that he never bet on the game of
baseball. Evidence is minimal and it has been over ten years, yet he is still ineligible to be voted
into the Hall of Fame. If it was left up to his statistics, he should have been inducted years ago.
There are a handful of the 244 elites that are in the Hall of Fame that did far worse things than
gamble on the game of baseball or evade paying their taxes. For instance, the beloved Ty Cobb
was a horrible racist and once admitted killing a man. One day while walking in Detroit, he
stepped in freshly poured asphalt. Then a construction worker, named Fred Collins, who just
happened to be black, yelled at him. Cobb responded by slapping Collins to the ground. Cobb
was found guilty by the courts, and received a suspended sentence. Collins filed a civil suit, but
settled out of court for $75. Ty Cobb had to deal with the law in one form or another many different
times for striking black men (www.totalbaseball.com). The powers that run the baseball
organization seem to turn their eyes, quite conveniently, away from any number of wife beaters,
and drug addict s everyday. They let known, proven criminals

Introduction. The Forward Premium Puzzle Can Be Referred
Introduction The forward premium puzzle can be referred to as the forward premium anomaly in
the capital markets. A forward premium can be described as a situation where the future exchange
or the spot future exchange trades at higher spot exchange rate compared to the domestic currency.
Using descriptive measures, the forward premium can be measured as the difference between the
forward rates. The prevailing spot rate and which also includes the domestic currency is expected to
increase when the domestic interest rates (nominal) surpasses foreign interest rates (Lane, and
Milesi‐Ferretti, 2011). The premium puzzle can be well seen because the theory explains that if

Individuals with relatively selective information about the quality of a product will selectively
participate in trades which benefit them the most, at the expense of the other trader. Forward
contracts cannot be traded in the exchange markets. Therefore, standard amounts of currency are
not traded in these forms of agreements. The only way they can be cancelled is when both
parties collectively agree. These parties involved in the contract are mostly interested in hedging
a foreign exchange position or even taking a speculative position. The parties with little the
information are worried about rigged trades, which occur when the party who has all the
information uses it to their advantage. This diminishes the volume of trade in the market. In this
case, the person who is subjected to adverse selection can protect himself by screening customers
or by identifying credible signals of appetite. For example, where the buyer is adversely selected

privately know that the current stock price exceeds the fundamental value of the firm. The
premium puzzle can be well seen because the economic theory states that if all currencies are
equally risky, all investors would ask for interest rates which are high on currencies which are
expected to reduce in value in the short run. Mostly, logical assumptions are made stating that future
spot rate is equal to the current

Paracetamol Research Paper
Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) hepatotoxicity is the classical example of direct liver injury.
Paracetamol is generally safe at recommended doses, but its intrinsic toxicity at higher doses
represents the most important cause of acute liver failure and transplantation. Paracetomol is
rapidly metabolized in the liver at therapeutic doses principally through sulfation and
glucuronidation, and only very small portion is oxidized by cytochrome P450 2E1 to generate a
highly reactive and cytotoxic intermediate N acetyl p benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), which yields
a harmless water soluble product, mercapturic acid on conjugation by hepatic glutathione.
However, the capacity for glucuronidation and sulfation is exceeded after acetaminophen overdose
and a large amount of NAPQI is formed via cytochrome P450 2E1 [26, 27]. After a toxic dose of
acetaminophen, total hepatic GSH (Glutathione) is depleted by as much as 90%, and as a result,
the metabolite covalently binds to cysteine groups on protein, forming acetaminophen protein
adducts .This mechanism is shown in figure 2. After administration of paracetomol, heptotoxicity
was noted at 500 mg/kg, orally when administered for 2 weeks in rats [28, 29]. 2.3. Azathioprine

such actions from the court have the intent on slowing down the progress of the New Deal.
(Court Packing) It was very unexpected and the courts eventually take action to prevent the

We do not need to look any further than the Book of Mormon to find historical examples of

stories filled with contentions and wars. These stories are predominantly between people of

firmly rooted in pride. The feelings of being better than, was prevalent.
More recently, we have the question of discrimination in relation to a policy that Brigham Young

This announcement also disallowed black men and women from participating in temple

UNEQUAL DIALOUGE IS PARAMOUNT The relationship between political leaders and

looking back at U.S. military operations, it the pendulum on military vs political control has
swung between the theory of Objective Control which was developed by Samuel Huntington and
the theory of Unequal Dialogue from Eliot Cohen. Huntington s objective control breaks the two
entities up as essentially two equal parties in charge of their own discipline. In WWII, the
Department of Defense was in charge of all warfare issues, with General Eisenhower running the
war, while Roosevelt and Truman handled domestic affairs, along with building support for
overseas operations. While this proved to be successful, we later saw the exact opposite affect
with operations in Vietnam while as political figures took back the power and civilians defined key
objectives. This method proved to be ineffective due to either party not receiving the full picture.

hearing loss is due to problems of the inner ear, also known as nerve related hearing loss (ASHA,

The cochlea contains thousands of outer and inner hair cells that transduce the mechanical energy
of sound into electrical energy and then deliver that electrical energy to the auditory nerve. The
hair cells provide information about the frequency and intensity of the sound. The auditory nerve
then transmits sound information to the brain, where a variety of complex pathways help us
decipher what was actually heard (Jacob, n.d.). Therefore, much of hearing as we perceive it is
under the control of the brain rather than the ear. Most commonly, sensorineural hearing loss is
caused by hair cell damage in the cochlea, but it can also be caused by damage to the auditory
nerve. Like it was described above, sensorineural hearing loss can have a variety of causes (Jacob,
n.d.). A lot of different causes will lead to different symptoms.
These symptoms include trouble following group conversations, muffled conversation sounds, and
dizziness. Also, inability to hear well when there s a lot of background noise, difficulty hearing
high pitched sounds, balance problems, and tinnitus (Falck, 2017). Moreover, some symptoms are

Servant Leadership By James C. Hunter s The Servant
Servant Leadership and its Application to Nursing Practice
The basis of the servant leadership theory is that in order to be a good leader; one must be a
servant, first (Hunter, 1998). Although, the concept of servant leadership can be applied to any
field, many nurses identify with the servant leadership style the most. James C. Hunter s book,
The Servant, portrays a difficult journey of understanding this concept, while also addressing many
of the main components of servant leadership. In this paper, I will discuss the concept of servant
leadership and how reading about this concept has helped me reach my goals to become a
knowledgeable and professional nurse.
Definitions and Background
The term, servant leadership was first coined in 1970 by Robert K. Greenleaf (Marquis Huston,
2015). The concept was introduced in Greenleaf s essay, The Servant as Leader (Greenleaf,
1991). In Greenleaf s essay he mentions that a servant leader focuses on the growth, as well as the
wellbeing of the people and the communities that they belong in (Greenleaf, 1991). A servant
leader helps others work at their best, which I believe results in authority for the servant leader.
Hunter s book mentions this when a student discovers that the right to be called a leader starts out
with having the proper will. With the proper will, comes the decision to love others (Hunter, 1998).
He defines loving others as the ability to meeting the needs of the subordinate, this leads to

Prejudice And Racism Exposed In The Bible
Generalities and blanket statements can be refuted because of the all or nothing aspect, and this
certainly is the case with the statement that everyone is a little bit racist. Racism does exist; that is
without question. However, I am not willing to say that every human has racist tendencies within
his/her heart.
In the beginning of time, God created man in his image (Genesis 1:29, New King James Version).
In both the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 10:17, New King James Version) and the New
Testament (Romans 2:11, New King James Version), we read that God does not show respect or
partiality to any person. Therefore, if man is created in God s image, and God does not show
partiality to any person, then the possibility exists that not everyone is a little bit racist. To say
otherwise is equivalent to saying that God is racist.
Another reason for my belief is my niece. Her dearest friend, Stina, had different color skin. The
two befriended each other in kindergarten and spent many nights together until Stina passed away

One reason for this belief is found in Proverbs 28:21. The Bible teaches that showing respect of
persons is not good (New King James Version). This demonstrates that showing partiality, or

here and other places in the Bible. Another reason for the belief can be seen within my school s
walls. Lunch tables filled with various nationalities and kids getting along with other kids
regardless of skin color are common. This type of behavior often stops as the kids age and are
influenced by some source. As a middle school teacher in a K 8 school, I have witnessed shifts in
some students behaviors, and racist tendencies appear out of the blue. Because of the Bible s
teachings and my personal observations, I believe that racism is a learned

Using Plastic Bag Levies On Plastic Bags Essay
In recent time green taxes have been implemented by many governments throughout the world in an
attempt to change consumers behaviour in order to achieve environmental sustainability s. One of
the most successful implementations of a green tax in recent times would be the levies on plastic
bags throughout European in the last decade. This paper will analyse why certain green taxes such
as plastic bag levies are successful compare to other measures such as fuel duties and to what effect
factors such the price elasticityof demand has on consumer behaviour and thus the effectiveness of
such taxes.
Word count 1890
According to the Green Fiscal Commission, green taxes are levies imposed on certain processes
or goods which produce significant amounts of pollution, in order to change the way, the public
consumes these goods. Ever since the introduction of the first green taxes, such as the fuel duty
escalator in the UK right up until the introduction of plastic bag levy, the success of such taxes
in changing behaviour has been debated. (Green Fiscal Commission, 2009). In essence the
success of such taxes in changing consumer behaviour depends on the price elasticity of the good
and the consumers willingness to pay for a good. For a tax to be successful demand must fall by a
lower proportion than the rise in price, which means the tax induced price will increase tax revenue
as well as lessen the environmental impact of the good. (Green Fiscal Commission, 2009).

The War On Drugs Should Be Discontinued
The united states spends a lot of money keeping dangerous criminals in prisons and off of the
streets. The phrase a lot hardly does justice describing a figure like 70 billion dollars.
Unfortunately, almost 50 percent of these criminals America spends that wad of cash on were
arrested for non violent drug charges, and are not a danger to America s safety at all. Drugs are
no good, but do not cause harm to anyone but the user. That is, until these drugs are made illegal
and drug cartels see huge profits in the illegal trade that they are willing to kill for. In 1971
President Nixon waged, quite dramatically, a full blown war against drugs abuse, claiming that
addiction is directly related to crime. Instead of offering therapy for addicts, the plan from 1971
and on was to incarcerate them, and ruin their lives far more so than the drugs ever had. The war
on drugs should be discontinued to cease wasteful spending, end the incarceration of peaceful
peoples, and prevent the deaths of officers and citizens alike. Already a trillion dollar failure thus
far, the war on drugs adds 51 billion dollars to that tab every year. An effort of these proportions
should have some accomplishments to boast, right? Sadly, it does not. The current United States
drug czar, Gil Kerlikowske, who directs the drug control policies in America, is quoted talking
about the war on drugs, saying, Forty years later, the concern about drugs and drug problems is, if
anything, magnified, intensified. In

Unpaid Child Support
Every child has a right to child support. Child support helps a parent provide for their child s
basic needs. Unfortunately, child support all too often goes unpaid. Unpaid support affects not
only the child but the parent receiving the child support as well. Parents owed child support can
take legal action to enforce their support order. You can do so at any time, even if your child has
turned 18. Enforcing an order can be a difficult process. You may need the help of an experienced
Florida child support enforcement attorney to do so successfully.
Unpaid child support is called child support arrears. The Court Clerk will enter a judgment for
this amount once your payment is 15 days delinquent. The balance will accumulate interest once
this is done. The owing parent will be responsible for the interest as well as the support amount
owed. There are several ways you can enforce a child support order and have your arrears paid.
To enforce a child support ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You can ask the Department of Revenue s Child Support Program for enforcement help. It is
important to keep in mind, however, that this agency has a backlog of enforcement cases. You
may have to wait some time for your case to be heard and for you to see a payment. In the
meantime, you may have little to no contact with the attorney assigned to your case. This help may
be free of charge, but it may not be the fastest route to getting your support paid. You may want to
consider working with an experienced Florida child support enforcement attorney if you are
concerned about getting results as soon as possible. An experienced family law attorney can help
you navigate the enforcement process, helping you get results quicker than you may through the
Department of Revenue. The Court has the power to order the owing parent to pay your attorneys
fees and court costs associated with the enforcement action as

My Life In New York City
I was born and raised in New York. I lived most of my life on Long Island in a town called North
Bellmore. North Bellmore is about fifty minutes from Manhattan and you can take the Long
Island Railroad straight to the city, if you like. I did that often. New York City was second
nature to me for 27 years of my life. I worked in the city often and took the train back and forth.
Everyone did. You were lucky to find a seat. Getting back to suburbia was nice and peaceful after
a long day in downtown near wall street with the skyscrapers and rush of people. Long Island is
a suburban area a bit like Salem. It has lines of houses and towns next to each other like we do
with Keizer and Silverton. I am sure you could already imagine that there is not even as close to
as many trees as there are here and there are no farms. Trees are planted sparsely down the streets
so that each block may have four or five constructed by the town in designated spots. We did
have lawns. Moving from Queens, NY when I was six, I remember how strange I thought a
lawn was. There are no lawns in Queens. I lived in Queens until my Mother got remarried. We
have four seasons in New York. They are very defined. You also have hurricanes and they can be
very serious. Blizzards are a big thing with sometimes many feet of snow. I can remember having
a blizzard with 4 1/2 feet of snow once when I was young. There is no rainy season, so it rains
here and there all year long. The summers are very hot and humid. It

The Death Of Robert F. Kennedy
The American Dream: success, happiness, riches, stability; all of these went out the window
after the stock market crash in 1929. As we ve all read about in history books and listened to the
monotonous lectures in high school, America was a place of promise and full of revolutionary
new ideas. Men were investing, women were working, and kids could play in the streets with a
twinkle in their eye. Arthur Miller was the prodigal son of hard working American immigrants who
struggled through the depression. Married three times, once to the famous Marilyn Monroe, Miller
was a critic at heart; chasing the American Dream in the 1940 s until the sole wore out of his shoes.
Because America has been bigger on promises than any other country, she... Show more content on

Backing down or slowing up was never an option because the kids needed clothes, the
refrigerator needed a new belt, the old Chevrolet needed a new carburetor, or the life insurance
was due. Drive and ambition was never lacking in the heart of Willy Loman. Whether it was
driving 4oo miles a day to pitch a sale in a place where no one knew him, or put new plaster on the
ceiling of his worn and dilapidated home, Mr. Loman could support his family and keep them off
the bottom. Well, until he aged. Pride can build a man into a great hero or it can tear a man apart; as
was the case for old Willy Loman. He compares his sons to the Greek God s, Adonis in particular,
when he talks about their physical appearance. He also calls his eldest son, Biff, Hercules, as he
is walking onto the football field (Rosinger, Web). Biff was the promise child, the goose that laid
the golden eggs. He had good looks that aroused the girls in high school and football skills that
attracted three different college scouts. What Biff lacked was brains and dedication, and Willy
knew it. Through a family friend Bernard, Willy found out that Biff was on the verge of flunking
his final math class and losing all scholarship offers and any chance of a successful future. Here
comes the pride though that let it go. The end of the year came and Biff failed his senior year,
and that is when a lot more things ended between Biff and Willy. After failing, Biff races to Boston
to beg his dad,

Nobody Liked Scrooge Analysis
Nobody liked Scrooge. According to the text, he was a wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching,
covetous, old sinner. On page 4 of Stave 4, the text tells us no one cared, they let him die alone.
The quotes are proof of what the townspeople thought of him. According to the text in Stave 4 page
4 it says, If he wanted to keep them after he was dead a wicked old screw. This is what the laundry
lady referred to his clothes and his personal belongings. Another example is in Stave 4 page 5 it
says, He frightened everybody away from him when he was alive, to profit us when he was dead.
This scary attitude he displayed was a reason why nobody liked him. The last example is in Stave 4

  • 2. Conformity In Social Psychology The subject of conformity is considered a primary point of research in social psychology. Many social psychologists throughout history have experimented and evaluated the attributes of conformity, concluding key factors that contribute to conformity. With consideration, it is arguable that culture and group size are two of the most accountable factors in social conformity. Evidently, research in these areas are both highly notable and in abundance; with respect to studies such as the Asch Line Experiment (Asch, 1951) and the Stanford Prison Experiment (Zimbardo, 1971). Social psychological theories such as The Chameleon Effect (Chartrand Bragh, 1999) also suggest evidence of conformism in society. Furthermore, the power and influence of minority groups (Minority Influence Theory; Charlan Jeanne Nemeth, 2009; Moscovivi and Lage, 1976) can importantly provide insight into not only how a minority can influence a majority in society but also show an alternative argument to the Asch paradigm. Fundamentally, all three factors that contribute to conformity are in attempt to describe human behaviour. Held in common belief, conformity has been long considered to an extent a product of cultural conditions in social psychology. Popular assumption regarded conformity of a society, singular and belonging of individual cultures globally and with respect to each, evidence was apparent of different types of conformity depending on the cultures characteristics (Peabody, 1985). ... Starbucks Final Case Study CASE STUDY: STARBUCKS CORPORATION (SBUX) Frank Mabson BUS 411: Strategic Planning Professor Oma Lopes Midway College Online Historical Background The name Starbucks came from a character that was chief mate aboard the Pequod in the novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville (Rolph, 2012). Originally, the name for the company was Pequod until one of the original co owners vetoed it and agreed on the name Starbucks instead. Now, we associate the name Starbucks with the company logo, which features a two tailed Greek mythology figure called siren. The Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) is an American, multinational coffee chain formed in 1985. The idea was sculpted and brought into reality by writer Gordon Bowker, history ... By staying ahead of the competition, Starbucks is not only able to set industry trends but also satisfy its customers, employees and shareholders. The basis of the competitive advantage Starbucks has on the coffee shop industry stems from its ability to market its brand and live up to its mission statement. In addition, Starbucks doesn t rely solely on its products for obtaining and sustaining the upper hand. According to MarketRealist.com, when customers enter a Starbucks establishment they are taking on an entire process and experience (Krikorian, 2014). By choosing Starbucks, customers can customize their drinks to perfection by selecting one of its 30 different options of premier coffee blends. Following the order process, customers can enjoy the great atmosphere by listening to music or perhaps enjoy taking part in friendly conversations with pleasant workers and patrons. Simply put, Starbucks thrives on a connected customer experience that differentiates them from the rest of the industry. Also, retail storefronts. In the U.S., Starbucks kindly takes advantages of the fact Americans tend to have morning rituals. As a result, they have the opportunity not only to serve loyal customers, but also essentially to become part of their lives (Krikorian, 2014). • 4. The Role Of Women In Raisin In The Sun And Trifles Men and women are constantly debating what their true role in life is. In a family, the women were expected to do the laundry, cook, and clean, while the men went to work and made money for their family. This idea has changed drastically over the years. Women are now able to get an education and work if they d like. Sixty years ago, this would not have been possible. Most men and women now share the housework, and both have full time jobs. In Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and Trifles by Susan Glaspellthe women struggle with being unheard by their husbands. In Raisin in the Sun, Ruth Younger struggles with her husband, Walter Lee, when he does not listen to her when they discuss their money problems. Walter strives to have more money, so he can provide his family with nice things. He is tired of being overlooked by the white men that he works for and wants to be more like them. Walter hates the job that he has because he must obey a white man. He constantly feels like the women in his life do not listen to his struggles and confides in alcohol instead of speaking with his family about his emotions. Walter Lee constantly belittles his wife saying, that just goes to show you what women understand about the world...nothing will happen for you in this world less you pay somebody off! (Hansberry 81). Again, the women s opinions and thoughts are overlooked by the men in the play. In the end, Walter Lee chooses to do the right thing and becomes the hero. When ... • 6. The Relevance Of Photosynthesis And Nature The Relevance Of Photosynthesis To Nature The natural light that shines onto the Earth is said to be the driving force behind all life. It s fascinating to find out that the green matter around us that we tend to take for granted is mankind s source of energy which is a necessity for every living being even in its lowest form. We can literally define photosynthesis as synthesis with the help of light . It is also defined as the basic process of life whereby plants absorb energy from sunlight and through a series of processes convert that energy to chemical energy that is later consumed by other living entities. As Julius Robert Mayer asserts, Nature has put itself the problem how to catch in flight light streaming to the earth and to store the most elusive of all powers in rigid form. This turns out to be an economic provision to which the existence of mankind is inexorably bound. (Rabinowitch and Govindjee, 9). We will examine how this process keeps our planet alive and will also demonstrate how plants distribute energy to all members of the ecosystem through a series of chain reactions. The following chemical equation gives us a general overview of the entire process: CO2 + H2O + ENERGY (PHOTONS) CX (H2 O) y + O2 This means carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) from the atmosphere together with kinetic energy from the sun that results in the variable carbohydrate group (CX (H2 O) y) and oxygen (O2 ). Outside, the sun dims, casting shadows on the tear stricken face of my friends. Through the thin, lifeless walls, we all hear the continued argument. You know I was right. Stop defending her! Kendall screams at Stella and Erica. I can imagine her face; the way her cheeks redden and her jaw clenches; the way her fists clench together and her toes curl in her white converse. If you aren t going to take my side, then get out. I don t want to hear it. I lean my head against the wall, my eyes puffy and red, thankful for the soft light. Again, the door is forced open, and heavy steps echo through the room. The day started normally. We woke up, had breakfast, went out and explored Gothenburg, Sweden, and just hung out. My soccer team and I decided to start up a scrimmage with another team that was attending the Youth World Cup; they agreed. We started the game, but then I left because it started raining. My feet, soaked by rain, slosh up the stairs, leaving glistening footprints in their wake. The thundering rain pounds against the thin windows, as if threatening to shatter them at any moment. The burning sensation in my knees becomes more prominent as the weight of my bags seem to increase. At the start of the novel Santiago does not know what he should do when he is confronted by his dream. But by the end of the novel Santiago completely trusts his heart to guide him though life. Santiago s story shows him learning and living out the theme of the novel. I think Paulo passed on his message about following your heart quite well. Through Santiago he showed that you must endure some hardship before you are rewarded for your efforts. I think I will always remember Santiago s journey and the lessons he learned along the way. Several years later, Santiago had enough money to journey back home but he decided he should continue on his journey despite his past experiences. I m not sure I could do the same thing as Santiago. I believe that this novel was meant to be read by people who are old enough to understand different struggles people sometimes need to endure to achieve goal. If someone were not to understand this concept then the novel would be empty, for them. The most interesting thing I found about the novel was the way Paulo build up Santiago s hopes and then destroyed them. Paulo not only did this several times but he also chose to do it right after Santiago thought he had learned a lesson about life. Most books I have read don t build up and destroy the main characters hopes so perniciously. I find that Santiago s journey is fairly unlikely to ever occur in real life. At the end of the novel, Santiago digs for his treasure but finds nothing, however the one man in the world that would tell him another place so search just so happens to be right there waiting. The odds of this happening are very low at best. Another thing that is impossible to occur in real life is someone turning lead into gold. This is not something that could be done. I would defiantly recommend this book to a friend or a family member. I fervently enjoyed The Alchemist, and I think that most people would enjoy reading about Santiago. How do we get there is something I had to learn from both textbooks and experiences. My parents would often talk about growing up, getting a job, starting a family, and live happily. They also talk about how religionleads you to happiness when you values love and kindness. It requires good literature review which is derived by tapping and evaluating previous researchers efforts and expertise. A potential research study on Conflict Management Styles among Corporate Executives in Developing Countries Nigeria a Case Study is considered for a signature assignment. Conflictis inevitable and exists everywhere. In organizational system, conflict and methods of conflict managementinfluences different groups (employees, management team and executives). Conflicts are realities of life and can be defined as a situation of competition in which the parties involved are quite aware of the incompatibility of future condition whereby each party wishes to occupy a position that is incompatible with the wishes of the other (Olu Adesubomi, 2013, p. 2). They have no boundaries. They occur whether we like it or not, especially when there is disagreement and misunderstanding which stands as major key characteristics of human relationships. The relationship could be domestic, national, or international (Spiroska, 2014). Furthermore, conflicts happen when people are incompatible. In the organizational setting, conflict could arise due to failure of the employer, not honoring certain agreed bargaining. Isolation in Winesburg Ohio and Death in The Woods In 1919, Sherwood Anderson composed his work Winesburg Ohio, which depicts the inner lives of small town America. Anderson s fascination to explore what s beneath the surface of human lives results in another story in 1933 called Death In The Woods . These two works, incidentally, share a common theme of isolation. The characters in these works, are portrayed as grotesques or people who live their lives by one truth, thus living a life of falsehood and isolation from the rest of the world. This essay will examine the theme of isolation in the two works described, and will also relate it to Anderson s idea of the grotesque . In Winesburg Ohio, the reader is first ... Because of this, Winesburg is considered a Bildungsroman, the character development of George the artist to George the man . His development occurs through his contact and dealing with the characters in the stories. Each character offers something new in his development, as in advice or wisdom. These grotesques rely on George to take notice of their isolation and falsehood, in hopes of George publishing their truths : Each in turn comes forward to offer his secret (the material of art) And to give up whatever fragmentary wisdom he may possess Toward the development of the artist who will be the spokesman. For everyone. (Fussell, p.111). So, it is through these encounters with George that the reader is introduced to the strong sense of isolation and underdevelopment the characters possess. The first example, is in the story Hands . Here, the character of Wing Biddlbaum is introduced, and right from the start, appears to have isolated himself from the rest of society. Among all the people of Winesburg but one had come close to him. (p.27). This one person, is of course George Willard, who is portrayed in this first story as a friend of Wing Biddlbaum. However, the topics often broadened to other areas, one of the most recurring being that of female sexuality and whether literature depicted it as pure and nearly asexual or tainted and virulent. I think this topic is a pressing issue in today s culture; many states are fine tuning abortion, rape, and gender identification laws as I write this. I also saw much attention being paid to this topic in two of the novels we read this semester: Mary Wollstonecrafts The Wrongs of Woman, or Maria, and Mary Robinson s The Natural Daughter. Even when her sister Julia becomes Mr. Morley s mistress, Martha will not, in the smallest instance, violate the proprieties of wedded life (278). It is not until two events occurred that Martha was willing to allow her sexuality to become primary: one, her husband dies with full knowledge that he was wrong about Martha and had ruined her for nothing, and two, Martha learns that Lord Francis is not Fanny s deceiving father, but the child s uncle, brother to Fanny s biological mother (293 5). As speedily as the decencies of life would permit, Lord Francis solicited and received the hand of Mrs. Morley (296). For the character of Martha, rationality and forthrightness far outweigh the sensibility of and desire to act on her sexuality. When we were children some of the best memories are those of the movies we used to watch; Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, The Frog Prince, things of those sorts. What many of us do not know is that fairy tales go back farther than that of Disney s productions. In this course, we have been learning about different views of fairy tales. One of the views that we have focused a lot on is told by Bruno Bettelheim in his book, The Uses of Enchantment. In his eyes fairy tales have the most effect on children and the way children grow up. The second view that we have learned about is J.R.R Tolkien s in his essay, On Fairy Stories . Tolkien claims that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tolkien first states that recovery includes return and renewal of health. [Recovery] is a re gaining regaining of a clear view. (Tolkien, J.R.R (1947 ed.) p.19) By this Tolkien means that recovery is not seeing the world for what it is but rediscovery of the banal, of the day to day world. Recovery is seeing things in a different light, and that is what fairy tales help to do. Fairy tales take the everyday world that we live and paint them in a light that allows us to offset what is going on in our world today, or to restore the visions that we have of our lives. He even relates this theory of recovery to himself in the quote For the story maker who allows himself to be free with Nature can be her lover not her slave. It was in fairy stories that I first divined the potency of the words, and the wonder of the things, such as stone, and wood, and iron; tree and grass; house and fire; bread and wine. (Tolkien, J.R.R (1947 ed.) p.20). I agree strongly with this in the sense that without these stories of fantasy how are we ever going to recover and see our world as great again with all the bad that happens. It was a great victory for William, he became King of England and was called William the Conqueror. There were many reasons for William s victory such as religious support, a well prepared army, weather, more effective weapons and most importantly superior tactics. Another important factor, which occurs in most battles in history, is that of luck. Throughout the battle it seemed that William was more fortunate than Harold. This meant they were organized and knew what to do when the time came to set sail for England. Everything was perfect for William except for the strong winds from the north meant it was not possible for his fleet to cross the Channel. He and his men were so desperate that they even prayed for a south wind. God or luck was on their side as after a thunderstorm the winds changed to a more favourable southerly direction and they seized the opportunity and set sail. Whilst sailing to England William s fleet got caught in a storm and they had to stop at the Somme estuary. This should have a disaster for William but luck was on his side, as this way the crossing to England was shorter and when he was finally able to cross, Harold was in the north of England. William s landing was well planned and helped by intelligence gathered in the previous months by Normans living in England. He had studied Caesar s invasion in 55 BC and was not going to make the same mistakes that he did. For example Caesar did not take the weather over the Channel into consideration and beached his boats in the wrong place, getting them damaged. Burns are injuries caused either by heat, chemicals, sunlight, radiation, or electricity (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (n.d.). Statistics show most burn injuries for women and children occur in the home and for men they typically occur at the workplace. They are classified as first, second, or third degree, usually by how deep and severely they breach the skins surface (World Health Organization, (2017, January). It s important to know the signs and symptoms of a burn injury to ensure the right kind of medical treatment is provided. Second degree burn damage extends as far as the dermis layer, which is the layer beneath the epidermis (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (n.d.). These burns sometimes will need a skin graft to enclose the area and protect it while in the healing process. A forward premium can be described as a situation where the future exchange or the spot future exchange trades at higher spot exchange rate compared to the domestic currency. Using descriptive measures, the forward premium can be measured as the difference between the forward rates. The prevailing spot rate and which also includes the domestic currency is expected to increase when the domestic interest rates (nominal) surpasses foreign interest rates (Lane, and Milesi‐Ferretti, 2011). Individuals with relatively selective information about the quality of a product will selectively participate in trades which benefit them the most, at the expense of the other trader. Forward contracts cannot be traded in the exchange markets. Therefore, standard amounts of currency are not traded in these forms of agreements. The only way they can be cancelled is when both parties collectively agree. These parties involved in the contract are mostly interested in hedging a foreign exchange position or even taking a speculative position. The parties with little the information are worried about rigged trades, which occur when the party who has all the information uses it to their advantage. • 27. Paracetamol Research Paper Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) hepatotoxicity is the classical example of direct liver injury. Paracetamol is generally safe at recommended doses, but its intrinsic toxicity at higher doses represents the most important cause of acute liver failure and transplantation. Paracetomol is rapidly metabolized in the liver at therapeutic doses principally through sulfation and glucuronidation, and only very small portion is oxidized by cytochrome P450 2E1 to generate a highly reactive and cytotoxic intermediate N acetyl p benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), which yields a harmless water soluble product, mercapturic acid on conjugation by hepatic glutathione. However, the capacity for glucuronidation and sulfation is exceeded after acetaminophen overdose and a large amount of NAPQI is formed via cytochrome P450 2E1 [26, 27]. After a toxic dose of acetaminophen, total hepatic GSH (Glutathione) is depleted by as much as 90%, and as a result, the metabolite covalently binds to cysteine groups on protein, forming acetaminophen protein adducts .This mechanism is shown in figure 2. Sensorioneural hearing loss is when hearing loss is due to problems of the inner ear, also known as nerve related hearing loss (ASHA, 2015). There are two types of sensorineural hearing loss: congenital and acquired sensorineural hearing loss. Congenital sensorineural hearing loss happens during pregnancy. Some causes include prematurity, maternal diabetes, lack of oxygen during birth, genetics, and diseases passed from the mother to the child in the womb, such as rubella. Acquired sensorineural hearing loss occurs after birth (Clason, 2015). Causes can include, aging, noise, disease and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The cochlea contains thousands of outer and inner hair cells that transduce the mechanical energy of sound into electrical energy and then deliver that electrical energy to the auditory nerve. The hair cells provide information about the frequency and intensity of the sound. The auditory nerve then transmits sound information to the brain, where a variety of complex pathways help us decipher what was actually heard (Jacob, n.d.). Therefore, much of hearing as we perceive it is under the control of the brain rather than the ear. Most commonly, sensorineural hearing loss is caused by hair cell damage in the cochlea, but it can also be caused by damage to the auditory nerve. Like it was described above, sensorineural hearing loss can have a variety of causes (Jacob, n.d.). A lot of different causes will lead to different symptoms. These symptoms include trouble following group conversations, muffled conversation sounds, and dizziness. Also, inability to hear well when there s a lot of background noise, difficulty hearing high pitched sounds, balance problems, and tinnitus (Falck, 2017). Moreover, some symptoms are not distinct enough. Some of the symptoms to watch for are listed below by Hearing Aid HealthCare ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Servant Leadership By James C. Hunter s The Servant Servant Leadership and its Application to Nursing Practice The basis of the servant leadership theory is that in order to be a good leader; one must be a servant, first (Hunter, 1998). Although, the concept of servant leadership can be applied to any field, many nurses identify with the servant leadership style the most. James C. Hunter s book, The Servant, portrays a difficult journey of understanding this concept, while also addressing many of the main components of servant leadership. In this paper, I will discuss the concept of servant leadership and how reading about this concept has helped me reach my goals to become a knowledgeable and professional nurse. Definitions and Background The term, servant leadership was first coined in 1970 by Robert K. Greenleaf (Marquis Huston, 2015). The concept was introduced in Greenleaf s essay, The Servant as Leader (Greenleaf, 1991). In Greenleaf s essay he mentions that a servant leader focuses on the growth, as well as the wellbeing of the people and the communities that they belong in (Greenleaf, 1991). A servant leader helps others work at their best, which I believe results in authority for the servant leader. Hunter s book mentions this when a student discovers that the right to be called a leader starts out with having the proper will. With the proper will, comes the decision to love others (Hunter, 1998). He defines loving others as the ability to meeting the needs of the subordinate, this leads to ... • 36. Prejudice And Racism Exposed In The Bible Generalities and blanket statements can be refuted because of the all or nothing aspect, and this certainly is the case with the statement that everyone is a little bit racist. Racism does exist; that is without question. However, I am not willing to say that every human has racist tendencies within his/her heart. In the beginning of time, God created man in his image (Genesis 1:29, New King James Version). In both the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 10:17, New King James Version) and the New Testament (Romans 2:11, New King James Version), we read that God does not show respect or partiality to any person. Therefore, if man is created in God s image, and God does not show partiality to any person, then the possibility exists that not everyone is a little bit racist. To say otherwise is equivalent to saying that God is racist. Another reason for my belief is my niece. Her dearest friend, Stina, had different color skin. The two befriended each other in kindergarten and spent many nights together until Stina passed away seven years ago. To this day, my niece grieves the loss and has a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One reason for this belief is found in Proverbs 28:21. The Bible teaches that showing respect of persons is not good (New King James Version). This demonstrates that showing partiality, or superiority as some view racism, came into play because teaching against the behavior is found here and other places in the Bible. Another reason for the belief can be seen within my school s walls. Lunch tables filled with various nationalities and kids getting along with other kids regardless of skin color are common. This type of behavior often stops as the kids age and are influenced by some source. As a middle school teacher in a K 8 school, I have witnessed shifts in some students behaviors, and racist tendencies appear out of the blue. Because of the Bible s teachings and my personal observations, I believe that racism is a learned ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Using Plastic Bag Levies On Plastic Bags Essay In recent time green taxes have been implemented by many governments throughout the world in an attempt to change consumers behaviour in order to achieve environmental sustainability s. One of the most successful implementations of a green tax in recent times would be the levies on plastic bags throughout European in the last decade. This paper will analyse why certain green taxes such as plastic bag levies are successful compare to other measures such as fuel duties and to what effect factors such the price elasticityof demand has on consumer behaviour and thus the effectiveness of such taxes. Word count 1890 According to the Green Fiscal Commission, green taxes are levies imposed on certain processes or goods which produce significant amounts of pollution, in order to change the way, the public consumes these goods. Ever since the introduction of the first green taxes, such as the fuel duty escalator in the UK right up until the introduction of plastic bag levy, the success of such taxes in changing behaviour has been debated. (Green Fiscal Commission, 2009). In essence the success of such taxes in changing consumer behaviour depends on the price elasticity of the good and the consumers willingness to pay for a good. For a tax to be successful demand must fall by a lower proportion than the rise in price, which means the tax induced price will increase tax revenue as well as lessen the environmental impact of the good. (Green Fiscal Commission, 2009). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The War On Drugs Should Be Discontinued The united states spends a lot of money keeping dangerous criminals in prisons and off of the streets. The phrase a lot hardly does justice describing a figure like 70 billion dollars. Unfortunately, almost 50 percent of these criminals America spends that wad of cash on were arrested for non violent drug charges, and are not a danger to America s safety at all. Drugs are no good, but do not cause harm to anyone but the user. That is, until these drugs are made illegal and drug cartels see huge profits in the illegal trade that they are willing to kill for. In 1971 President Nixon waged, quite dramatically, a full blown war against drugs abuse, claiming that addiction is directly related to crime. Instead of offering therapy for addicts, the plan from 1971 and on was to incarcerate them, and ruin their lives far more so than the drugs ever had. The war on drugs should be discontinued to cease wasteful spending, end the incarceration of peaceful peoples, and prevent the deaths of officers and citizens alike. Already a trillion dollar failure thus far, the war on drugs adds 51 billion dollars to that tab every year. An effort of these proportions should have some accomplishments to boast, right? Sadly, it does not. The current United States drug czar, Gil Kerlikowske, who directs the drug control policies in America, is quoted talking about the war on drugs, saying, Forty years later, the concern about drugs and drug problems is, if anything, magnified, intensified. • 43. My Life In New York City I was born and raised in New York. I lived most of my life on Long Island in a town called North Bellmore. North Bellmore is about fifty minutes from Manhattan and you can take the Long Island Railroad straight to the city, if you like. I did that often. New York City was second nature to me for 27 years of my life. I worked in the city often and took the train back and forth. Everyone did. You were lucky to find a seat. Getting back to suburbia was nice and peaceful after a long day in downtown near wall street with the skyscrapers and rush of people. Long Island is a suburban area a bit like Salem. It has lines of houses and towns next to each other like we do with Keizer and Silverton. I am sure you could already imagine that there is not even as close to as many trees as there are here and there are no farms. Trees are planted sparsely down the streets so that each block may have four or five constructed by the town in designated spots. We did have lawns. Moving from Queens, NY when I was six, I remember how strange I thought a lawn was. There are no lawns in Queens. I lived in Queens until my Mother got remarried. We have four seasons in New York. They are very defined. You also have hurricanes and they can be very serious. Blizzards are a big thing with sometimes many feet of snow. I can remember having a blizzard with 4 1/2 feet of snow once when I was young. There is no rainy season, so it rains here and there all year long. The summers are very hot and humid. It ... As we ve all read about in history books and listened to the monotonous lectures in high school, America was a place of promise and full of revolutionary new ideas. Men were investing, women were working, and kids could play in the streets with a twinkle in their eye. Arthur Miller was the prodigal son of hard working American immigrants who struggled through the depression. Married three times, once to the famous Marilyn Monroe, Miller was a critic at heart; chasing the American Dream in the 1940 s until the sole wore out of his shoes. Whether it was driving 4oo miles a day to pitch a sale in a place where no one knew him, or put new plaster on the ceiling of his worn and dilapidated home, Mr. Loman could support his family and keep them off the bottom. Well, until he aged. Pride can build a man into a great hero or it can tear a man apart; as was the case for old Willy Loman. He compares his sons to the Greek God s, Adonis in particular, when he talks about their physical appearance. He also calls his eldest son, Biff, Hercules, as he is walking onto the football field (Rosinger, Web). Biff was the promise child, the goose that laid the golden eggs. He had good looks that aroused the girls in high school and football skills that attracted three different college scouts. What Biff lacked was brains and dedication, and Willy knew it. Through a family friend Bernard, Willy found out that Biff was on the verge of flunking his final math class and losing all scholarship offers and any chance of a successful future. Here comes the pride though that let it go. The end of the year came and Biff failed his senior year, and that is when a lot more things ended between Biff and Willy.
