“Elements of a Short Story”
I. Objectives
At the end of the 30 minutes discussion the learners should be able:
-to identify the elements of short story
-to perform a role playing out from the story
-to value the lesson from the story
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic: Elements of a short story
B. Materials: laptop, LCD projector, speaker
III. Procedure
A. Daily Routine
-Greet the students and ask one student to lead the prayer.
-Check the attendance.
B. Review
-Show pictures and then ask what stories/movies thus they represent.
-Ask: What was our topic yesterday?
C. Motivation
- Watch a video about the “Elements of a Short Story”
-Ask the students what was the video all about.
D. Presentation
-Use the review and motivation as springboard for the new lesson.
-Ask the following question to arose interest and participation
-What is your favorite short story?
-Why did you like it?
-Which part made you interested or get attracted?
-From the video can you tell me the common elements of a story and their meaning?
E. Activity
Divide into 2 groups. Each group should find short stories and role play the chosen story.
Give some values that you get in your chosen short story.
F. Generalization
1. What were the elements of the story that contributed a good feedback when you perform the character of the
said role play?
2. What is the importance of elements of short story?
IV. Evaluation
In a ¼ sheet of paper, write your answer using different elements of a short story.
1. The series of related events that together form a story?
2. Who takes part in the action of a short story?
3. Struggle between opposing forces.
4. The place and time where the story happens. It sets the scene.
5. This is the main idea, central belief or topic which can be abstract like sacrifice, isolation and resurrection.
V. Assignment
Read the selection “The Scarlet of Ibis” by James Hurst.
Determine its character, setting, conflict, plot and theme
