Erik Erikson's first stage of psychosocial development focuses on trust versus mistrust in infants from birth to 1 year old. During this stage, infants develop a sense of trust in caregivers if their needs are consistently met, which leads to healthy development. However, if caregivers are unreliable or rejecting, infants may develop mistrust which can cause issues like depression or psychosis later in life. The optimal outcome occurs when caregivers balance being responsive to needs with allowing mistakes without harming the child's sense of security.
