The use of Eportfolio for clinical 
competency and reflective practice: 
Tips and tricks from a user’s perspective

Background 
 Designed and implemented an Eportfolio in 2013 to: 
 Create a flexible and timely platform to facilitate reflective 
practice and 
 Help students work towards professional competency. 
 This process was trailed in the first year clinical 
placement subject and has been extended to 4 
other subjecting in the Nutrition and Dietetics 
course. 
 Today- Pros and Cons and Tips and Tricks for users

Background  Designed and implemented an Eportfolio in 2013 to:  Create a flexible and timely platform to facilitate reflective practice and  Help students work towards professional competency.  This process was trailed in the first year clinical placement subject and has been extended to 4 other subjecting in the Nutrition and Dietetics course.  Today- Pros and Cons and Tips and Tricks for users 2
  • 3. 3 PRO 1- Always there
  • 4. 4 CON 1- But…only there if have computer and internet access
  • 5. 5 PRO 2- Personalisable
  • 6. 6 CON 2- No entry from student= no entry from supervisor
  • 7. 7 PRO 3- Can be changed/developed as you go
  • 8. 8 CON 3- Limited functionality
  • 9. 9 PRO 4- Saves Trees
  • 10. 10 CON 4- Can’t print empty portfolio if needed
  • 11. 11 PRO 5- Real-time feedback to students
  • 12. 12 PRO 6- Easy ID of any students not progressing in a timely fashion via reports
  • 13. 13 Tips and Tricks  Include a personalised page for students
  • 14. 14 Tips and Tricks  Make sure only 1 submission is available per student reflective blog/portfolio
  • 15. 15 Tips and Tricks  Allow adequate training time for both students and supervisors to be ready to use the system- and be prepared for teething problems
  • 16. 16 Tips and Tricks  Troubleshoot the eporfolio before launching it
  • 17. 17 Tips and Tricks  Talk to your IT support person or Pebblepad advisor and discuss if options that will make system more user friendly are available
