E-LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES AND HUMAN LEARNING PROCESSijejournal
Learning has been a recurrent and inseparable activity of human being since ever. People have been
inventing and discovering various methods and techniques to improve its acquisition process and ways.
One’s progress and development has always been evolutionary as regards to learning versatility. One has
come to know various tactics, techniques and technologies according to the developing circumstances. But
now, in the 21st century, it may be said that this process cannot be termed as evolutionary as it was in its
place a revolutionary phenomenon. Science and technology changes the whole internal mindset as well as
external perspective. Computer changes the whole scenario. With its introduction, the conception of
electronic era emerged. Electronic learning opened a new chapter in the history of human education and
knowledge. Virtual classroom concept came into being. Interactive means changed altogether. All these
means prove to be effective in the human learning process.

1.Introduction
Learning e-volution…! Will you be part of it?
The aim of this booklet compilation is to offer ESL teachers some insight
into a variety of available online resources they can visit for input. We are
lucky to have an endless ‘library’ of data that can offer the information we
occasionally look for in order to enhance our personal development as
teachers at any time we feel like it! So easy, so fast, so effective. However
we might feel overwhelmed by the countless sites out there…therefore, an
effort is made here to present a limited number that have been tried out and
work miracles for us.
It is all a matter of perspective and need one has at the time of interaction
with the resource. The way the new input will be used to promote our
understanding of an issue or to enhance our teaching is directly proportional
to the personality and needs of each teacher at a specific moment and
therefore the learning outcome may generate innumerable representations
and applications. Our utmost concern remains to improve our students’
engagement and performance in a pleasant learning environment for all
parties involved; an environment close or even within the reality of our
students, which today is the web as well. Many teachers have already given
into this new digital world and the vast options it offers for communication,
learning, teaching, doing business, conducting research etc. Why not use it to
both enjoy teaching and excel professionally?!
Through your active online involvement you will definitely gain insight into the
learning habits of modern students, better restructure your lesson planning
to engage and advance students and integrate social media and other e-
learning tools in your teaching.
6. Elen Soti, English Language Teacher (EFL/ESL) 2013
P6
e-Professional Development Booklet, 2013
It is advisable to visit the links below for hands-on experience in order to
explore and exploit the options offered. Some links may provide you with info
or ideas to incorporate in your teaching (e.g. develop activities for one or
more of the 4 learning skills) that will benefit your students, while others
might enhance your understanding of issues or lead to further research and
promote new learning experiences and even create opportunities for live
interaction or cooperation with other participants in activities globally!
Through your network ‘journey’, media literacy skills will gradually advance
and you will become a confidently expert net-surfer who will be able to
integrate digital tools in your teaching practice and your personal lifestyle as
well…
The following are just a stepping stone to the broad galaxy of learning
opportunities on the web!
2. Suggestions for Professional Development through
the web
Just a few years ago, teachers seeking ideas and resources for professional
development had to resort to related publications (books, journals, articles
etc.), or In Service sessions, Conferences, Seminars, Teacher Trainers or
older experienced colleagues! Most of these required payment and were
limited. Nowadays, however, teachers interested in upgrading their
pedagogical approaches to teaching and wishing to implement innovative
methodologies in their class to motivate and promote their students’ learning,
thanks to the internet, can do so easily. Access is unrestricted and free
while resources are innumerable on a variety of sites. All that teachers need
is time, access to internet and an inner drive to advance in their profession.

e-Professional Development Booklet, 2013
Professional development is – and should be - an ongoing process that keeps
us up to date with all possible advancements in our area of expertise, which
give us incentives and ideas in order to become more effective in our
profession and benefit both our students and ourselves.
Ideas on what professional development entails and its significance can be
found in many sites,
e.g. http://www.edutopia.org/teacher-development-introduction
The way we learn, combined with the support of technology, is well depicted
in the following chart:

3. Getting started with the digital world.
It is pretty easy to start. Make sure you login or to put it simply, you are in
the internet. Then select, install and visit a browser like Google, Yahoo or
others and type the key words for your search in the blank box where the
cursor appears. Hundreds of options will appear with resources you need, to
look through and choose from what you feel better meets your requirements
on each occasion.
An easy way to learn how to do almost anything is to watch a relevant video
tutorial on You Tube. In case you wonder what You Tube or Google are and
how they can be used, then you need to visit some sites that will help you get
started with the basics:
e.g.
o http://www.learnthenet.com/how-to/get-started/
- http://netforbeginners.about.com/od/internet101/u/inetbasics.htm

iv. Web 2.0 tools
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
i. Browsers
A browser allows you to type the title or key words of what you are looking
for and acts as a search engine, finding and showing lists of possible
references you might consider relevant to your search and wish to visit and
explore. Simply look through the lists and click on what you like. You may
always go back to your list and check out more references.

ii. Websites
A website is a collection of web pages on a relevant theme, which is run by
a web domain. One could characterise a website like a large encyclopaedia of
endless pages on any possible topic, all open and available to be explored.
o Google
o Yahoo
o Facebook
o You Tube
o Wikipedia
o Amazon.com
o Ebay
o msn
o twitter

iii. Training courses on web 2.0 tools and teaching
Currently, in Greece, an introduction to e-tools and their use is offered
by the Ministry of Education, as in many other countries. However it is
aimed at people who apply for a course and are lucky enough to be
selected to join. People who complete the course are offered a
certificate. If one cannot join in but wishes to learn about e-tools, it is
possible through workshops organised by our District School Advisor or
various free courses and tutorials on the internet.
In our modern world of technology our teaching is closely intertwined
with the use of web 2.0 tools we need to become familiar with so as to be
able to communicate and cooperate with colleagues as well as our digitally
literate students!

iv. Web 2.0 tools
The Web 2.0 tools are applications designed to be used online for various
purposes and can reinforce the teaching and learning of all language skills:
reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The options are endless, depending on
teachers’ creativity and imagination and the e-tools are countless, with new
ones appearing daily! Don’t get frustrated trying to learn about them all and
how they are used… whichever tool you manage to learn, it will do the job. Your
students can always benefit from limited e-tools, provided they are used
effectively to enhance learning. Flipped classrooms and Blended learning are
modern ways of teaching with the assistance of technology at present.
Below are some examples of e-tools that can be used by students (and
teachers) in the learning process. Use some of these e-tools to support your
students while practising the 4 language skills and assist them when
presenting their work digitally.

v. Internet Safety
It is good for teachers, parents and students to learn to ‘surf’ the net
safely and make the learning experience exciting but not hazardous.
There are many risks one needs to be aware of and know how to avoid and
be protected.
So make sure you read carefully all the precautions described in sites like
the following:

vi. Plagiarism checker - handy tools for project work
You just received your student’s work. How sure are you it is his/her
work? To what extent has the student paraphrased or used original ideas
and expressions? You can easily find out and assess your student’s work in
a fair way while teaching students to be fair themselves! You could use
for example:
http://smallseotools.com/plagiarism-checker/
http://paperrater.com
There are many more e-tools to find and explore. So just ‘Google’ what
you are looking for!
Finally, however, try not to procrastinate a lot, as the internet is a big
temptation and distraction when not handled with care….
Procrastinators…!
