The Criminalization of HIV Non-Disclosure & Exposure: Legal Violence and Expe...
This presentation elaborates initial findings from an ongoing qualitative research project examining the lived experiences of people who have been criminally charged in relation to HIV non-disclosure and/or exposure in Canada, a country well known for its high rates of criminalization towards HIV. This project examines the material outcomes of being institutionally marked as a 'criminal' and a 'risk to public safety' through mobilizing a critically engaged ethnography approach that is grounded in the experiences of people directly targeted by the application of the law. This study elaborates the increasing precarity facing HIV-positive people who must live their lives in a negative relation to the law and who can be subject to a range of forms of legal violence as a result. This presentation provides unique and critical insight into formal and informal forms of punishment and legal violence enacted onto people by centering the voices of people who have faced these circumstances first-hand. Findings from this study outline the experiences of people who have faced the most punitive aspects of the state punishment apparatus first-hand, including those who have faced aggravated charges, long sentences, incarceration in segregation units, and ongoing life-long surveillance via sex offender registration. People in this study also described a range of informal forms of violence that threaten their daily security, including sensationalistic media coverage labeling people as violent predators; as well as the inability of current social services to meet the complex mental health needs required to address the trauma resulting from being accused. Finally, this project asks what harshly punishing people living with HIV with sanctions that are vastly disproportionate to the supposed committed 'crime' through the practice of criminalizing HIV non-disclosure and/or exposure says about the role of law and contemporary practices of punishment in Canadian society.

Capstone Studio: Gender-Inclusive Planning | Final Report
As part of Hunter College’s Master of Urban Planning program capstone, the Gender-Inclusive Planning studio (GenderInc) has produced a report describing planning interventions and policy recommendations to elevate LGBTQ safety and equity in the urban public realm. We used the Jackson Heights neighborhood in Queens as a focus area for our efforts, as it is home to a large LGBTQ population and has been the site of several recent instances of gender-based violence. Jackson Heights also contains varied land uses, transportation options, and a richly diverse populous, enough so to capture the wide range of planning issues that one could encounter in the rest of the city at large. Our initiatives and recommendations are aimed at reducing harassment and violence against LGBTQ people in public spaces, with a particular focus on public transit as well as on transit’s street-level access points. These recommendations and initiatives are specifically designed to be executed on a broader level across the five boroughs of New York City. Such a citywide application of the report’s findings would position New York City as a national leader in addressing gender-based violence and harassment. Deviance is socially constructed and dependent on factors like culture, history, and location. Not all crime is deviant and not all deviance is illegal. Crime statistics come from official police records and victim/self-report surveys. Younger males from working-class backgrounds and certain ethnic groups are overrepresented in crime statistics, though sociological factors like biased policing may influence these disparities. The impacts of crime can be physical, financial, social, and psychological on individuals and communities.

Crime is defined as deviant behavior that violates accepted laws or rules. Sociologists study crime using theories like differential association theory, control theory, and routine activities theory. Differential association theory suggests people are more likely to commit crimes if they associate with groups that view crime positively. Control theory proposes people refrain from crime if they feel bound to their society. Routine activities theory states crime depends on opportunities that bring offenders, targets, and lack of guardians together. Capstone Studio: Gender-Inclusive Planning | Final Report
As part of Hunter College’s Master of Urban Planning program capstone, the Gender-Inclusive Planning studio (GenderInc) has produced a report describing planning interventions and policy recommendations to elevate LGBTQ safety and equity in the urban public realm. We used the Jackson Heights neighborhood in Queens as a focus area for our efforts, as it is home to a large LGBTQ population and has been the site of several recent instances of gender-based violence. Jackson Heights also contains varied land uses, transportation options, and a richly diverse populous, enough so to capture the wide range of planning issues that one could encounter in the rest of the city at large. Our initiatives and recommendations are aimed at reducing harassment and violence against LGBTQ people in public spaces, with a particular focus on public transit as well as on transit’s street-level access points. These recommendations and initiatives are specifically designed to be executed on a broader level across the five boroughs of New York City. Such a citywide application of the report’s findings would position New York City as a national leader in addressing gender-based violence and harassment. Deviance is socially constructed and dependent on factors like culture, history, and location. Not all crime is deviant and not all deviance is illegal. Crime statistics come from official police records and victim/self-report surveys. Younger males from working-class backgrounds and certain ethnic groups are overrepresented in crime statistics, though sociological factors like biased policing may influence these disparities. The impacts of crime can be physical, financial, social, and psychological on individuals and communities.
Crime
Crime is defined as deviant behavior that violates accepted laws or rules. Sociologists study crime using theories like differential association theory, control theory, and routine activities theory. Differential association theory suggests people are more likely to commit crimes if they associate with groups that view crime positively. Control theory proposes people refrain from crime if they feel bound to their society. Routine activities theory states crime depends on opportunities that bring offenders, targets, and lack of guardians together. Sociologists examine crime patterns among age, gender, race, social class, and ethnicity groups to better understand who commits crimes and why. Understanding the sociology of crime allows societies to develop solutions that prevent criminal behavior and recidivism.

This document summarizes research on political and civic education in Chile and Latin America. It discusses two major studies - the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement's Civic Education Study, and two studies sponsored by the Organization of American States. The Civic Education Study surveyed over 14,000 Chilean students in 1999-2000. It assessed their civic knowledge, beliefs, and expectations for participation. Chilean students performed well but were less aware of potential threats to democracy than international students. The OAS studies analyzed these results and surveyed countries' national policies on education for democratic citizenship.

CHANGE Philanthropy (formerly known as Joint Affinity Groups) was founded in 1993 to unify identity-focused philanthropic affinity groups into an empowered coalition between our seven core partners. Collectively, we are working to integrate diversity, inclusion, and social justice into philanthropic practice. As the work of our individual partners organizations developed and deepened, so did our need to strategically address equity. Racial justice and the climate movement
A challenge as complex as climate change demands approaches that link its social and ecological dimensions. Importantly, the destructive effects of our fossilfuelbased way of life are uneven, harming some people more than others. The impacts of climate change are also uneven. For example, coastal storms, sea level rise, and drought disproportionately affect certain populations. Real solutions to the climate crisis will require a significant level of socioeconomic change, as we decarbonize many sectors of society including energy, agriculture, and transportation, to name a few. Socioeconomic restructuring on this scale raises the critical issue of equity: solutions must work for everyone.
To best create climate solutions that meet the needs of everyone, we must create space for historically less privileged populations to lead. A more inclusive and intersectional movement will allow all groups to learn how patterns of oppression and privilege operate in our society, as well as, understand how they intersect with environmental justice and the ability to influence public policy. It will also build trusting relationships that leverage the power of diverse alliances and intersections, broadening our work beyond the confines of singleissue environmental organizing.
To that end, this webinar will answer the following: “How can we honor the intersectionality of climate change in a way that invites historically excluded populations to lead us toward an unstoppable climate movement?” Participants will walk away with guidance and lessons learned from philanthropists and practitioners who are applying an inclusive and intersectional approach to strengthen their work.

This session will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
Abstract:
Let’s talk about powerful conversations! We all know how to lead a constructive conversation, right? Then why is it so difficult to have those conversations with people at work, especially those in powerful positions that show resistance to change?
Learning to control and direct conversations takes understanding and practice.
We can combine our innate empathy with our analytical skills to gain a deeper understanding of complex situations at work. Join this session to learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and how to improve our agile conversations in order to be more influential without power. We will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
In the session you will experience how preparing and reflecting on your conversation can help you be more influential at work. Psychological safety in teams is important; team members must feel safe and able to communicate and collaborate effectively to deliver value. It’s also necessary to build long-lasting teams since things will happen and relationships will be strained.
But, how safe is a team? How can we determine if there are any factors that make the team unsafe or have an impact on the team’s culture?
In this mini-workshop, we’ll play games for psychological safety and team culture utilizing a deck of coaching cards, The Psychological Safety Cards. We will learn how to use gamification to gain a better understanding of what’s going on in teams. Individuals share what they have learned from working in teams, what has impacted the team’s safety and culture, and what has led to positive change.
Different game formats will be played in groups in parallel. Examples are an ice-breaker to get people talking about psychological safety, a constellation where people take positions about aspects of psychological safety in their team or organization, and collaborative card games where people work together to create an environment that fosters psychological safety.
