Environmentalism And Environmentalism
As technology continues to advance, so does one's level of research. The internet provides a
plethora of information to those seeking answers to pertinent questions–questions specifically
regarding health and environmentalism. Before the internet, people typically relied on advice from
friends, doctors, or sayings. We've all heard "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." But now that
the times are changing and more information is readily available at the click of our smart phone, is it
time to question information that has been engrained in us since childhood. Veganism, a plant–based
diet that has become increasingly more popular in the past few years, arguably is a not a "trend,"
and perhaps adopting this way of living could in fact save the planet. In his article, "Go Vegan, save
the planet," Wang acknowledges that going Vegan is not an easy transition. "It requires overcoming
our habits and our tastes, learning new ways to cook, planning during travel, and navigating the
social aspects of eating and meal sharing" (Wang, George C). Environmentalism and humanity have
a direct correlation when it comes to the consumption of animals. To eat or not to eat? Ethical or not
ethical? Is one following their moral compass before devouring beef? However, author of "Being
vegan isn't as good for humanity as you think," Chase Purdy suggest the only way to reach
environmental efficiency is by "throwing vegans a bone." When applied to an entire global
population, the vegan diet wastes

It Has Been Argued That Canadian Environmentalism Occurred
It has been argued that Canadian environmentalism occurred in a series of waves throughout the
countries growth and development. Upon colonization the Canadian landscape was abundant in
resources, the opportunities limitless. Over the course of a century industrialization had swept the
nation. The rapid depletion of resources initiated the development of numerous private organizations
that sought to control, maintain, and ensure longevity of such resources. This force would continue
to reshape along with the industrial demands and ever–changing landscape. It is imperative to
provide context regarding the evolution of the environmental movement that took place in Canada,
in order to comprehend the role non–governmental organizations played ... Show more content on

Gradually conservationist efforts of resource preservation developed, characterizing North
America's first wave of environmentalism.
Individuals involved within Canada's forestry industry developed many of the earliest conservation
efforts. The rapid depletion of Canadian forests forced many to advocate for the development of
controlled harvesting and reserved areas. By 1900, the Canadian Forestry Association was
established. Despite Canada's earliest efforts, their neighbours to the south were generally further
advanced with their efforts. Such gap in national efforts can be viewed as a matter of population
differences, industrial expansion, and economic circumstances. The American settlements were
much further developed in many respects than their counterparts, and had demonstrated
anthropogenic harm throughout their growth. In 1909, American President Theodore Roosevelt,
invited both Mexico and Canada to join the United States at the North American Conservation
Conference. This conference would lead to the establishment of Canada's Commission of
Conservation.
Canada's Commission of Conservation developed recommendations and environmental ethics that
can be viewed as the seeds of modern environmentalism. The development of national parks also
illustrates the difference between American and Canadian conservation. In 1885, Banff became
Canada's first national park, while their neighbours had established their first national park,

Mental Environmentalism Summary
In Micah White's "Mental Environmentalism", the author emphasizes the detrimental effects
imprudent and pervasive commercial advertising has on society and compares it to a dystopia where
we are captivated by consumerism. White explains that we must maintain a healthy mental
environment because our external reality is essentially a reflection of our internal world and with the
way advertisements have plagued our minds, it has resulted in devastating global issues like climate
change. With constant exposure to advertisements daily, our ability and potential to be imaginative
and think freely is limited, both traits that are vital for a society to thrive and flourish. White starts
the abstract off with an epiphany of how he feels he is in

Radical Environmentalism Research Paper
As environmental issues continually enter into our view through the news and our own personal
research and interests we hear many stories about the good and bad that is happening to our
environment. The stories tell us about the efforts made to clean up our rivers oceans and lake and
maybe the problems that morally impact us to clean them. There are many different responses to the
negative, or what one would perceive as negative, effects of our human impact on our environment.
One such response and environmental view is that of Radical Environmentalism which can be
associated with Eco–terrorism. Even though Radical Environmentalism is a valid view of the
environment to hold, are the actions associated with the view necessary to get their ... Show more

Radical Environmentalism is a branch of Grassroots that come from an ecocentric view that is
frustrated with modern environmentalism. They have the base view that, human society , as it is
now constituted, is utterly unsustainable and must be reconstructed according to an entirely different
socioeconomic logic and that a sustainable society must be small in scale and modest and
technology (Lewis 2). Eco–Terrorism is defined as acts of violence that are committed in support of
ecological and or environmental interests, against persons or property. Those individuals and
organizations that take part in eco–terrorism reject the label eco–terrorist as a descriptive label for
their tactics and prefer economic sabotage or ecotage (Vanderheiden 426). Ecotage mentioned
previously, are the acts that radical environmentalist groups take against those things which don't
comply with their environmental views. These actions are sometime destructive to private property
and although not always directed to other people specifically, can be dangerous to those
participating and others. Activists viewed ecotage as economic warfare against those who would
destroy wilderness areas. By vandalizing equipment; pulling up survey stakes; driving metal,
ceramic or quartz spikes into trees, and so on, practitioners hoped to halt the destruction by making
it unprofitable (Taylor 14). Groups known as the Earth Liberation Front or ELF and activists of
Earth First! are such organizations. We will go into detail about ELF and Earth First! in a later

American Environmentalism Essay
The status of nature and the environment in American society had not been given much priority in
the political sphere due to it being deeming trivial, and its proponents basing their argument on
moral and aesthetic grounds, yet the surge of scientific data and new information through the birth
of the field of ecology, would prioritize the status of America's natural environment in the political
process, and lashed back against the increasingly polluted world Americans lived in, on a legal
level. Rather than a spiritual belief in the divinity of nature's beauty, environmentalists drew upon a
new rationale, being the new science of ecology, that grew through the support and funding of
government agencies, educational institutions as well as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It came to the point where ecology was ushered in due to the great wave of scientific data and
findings, along with the other traditional fields of science such as physics or chemistry, and where
the work of ecologists would continue to fuel the environmentalist movement, promoting public
action, and establishing credibility for the movement. The concept of environmentalism had been
revitalized in the midst of scientific advancement, where environmental organizations such as the
Wilderness Society and the Sierra Club entered the social justice movements of the 20th century
reenergized, with a commitment that was stronger than ever to environmental efforts. A new
generation of professional activists for the environmentalist movement emerged, ready to further the
cause in both the legal and political sectors, where scientists provided irrefutable evidence, that
backed up lawyers, who in turn fought legal battles with government agencies and in the

1970s Environmentalism Conspiracy
Our planet faces a lot of problems such as resources, energy supply, waste and pollution, habitats
and species becoming endangered. These problems lead to environmentalism conspiracy. There are
many different ideas or understandings of environmentalism. In a recent address to the CATO
Institute in Washington, President Klaus declared "environmentalism" is a religion, but
environmentalism conspiracy is a different way of thinking in which people attempt to care about
the planet more and the long–term survival of life on earth these idea created by primarily middle–
class lobbying groups became a political movement in the late 19th to the mid–20th century these

and the health consequences of pollution during the Industrial Revolution. Most early
environmentalist believed that market shouldn't have been charged with protecting the environment;
they believed that the government should. In the 1970s environmentalist tried to develop strategies
for limiting environmental decline through recycling. There are two different understanding of
environmentalism conspiracy. Emancipatory environmentalism is human–welfare ecology
understanding that aims to enhance life by creating a safe and clean environment, is a part of wide
concern with even justice and reflected tendency, later industrial societies to place more importance
on "quality–of–life" issues than on traditional economic concerns. The other understanding is
anthropocentric this approaches the negative effects of environmental degradation has on humans
and their interest, health, recreation, and quality of life. The features of anthropocentric are that it
considers the moral liability that humans have to each other. Environmentalist point out the need for
government to regulate market, they also do not ignore the destitute problems that are being

Environmentalism and Other Isms (and Ists)
Part A: Define the following terms:
1. Preservationism or Preservationist
Preservationism is an attempt that seeks to preserve, conserve, and protect landscapes and certain
biodiversity hot spots. An example of preservationism would be setting aside a large piece of land as
a "preservation" area that does not have human access. Preserving something means to protect it and
save it. A preservationist is someone is supports the preservation of something, like historic
buildings and artifacts.
2. Environmentalism or Environmentalist
Environmentalism is the theory that the environment is an important factor for an individual or
groups in their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Conservationism or Conservationist
Conservationism is believing that something, like the environment, needs careful preservation and
protection. Wanting to prevent exploitation, neglect, or destruction of a natural place.
Conservationist is a person who supports or acts on the protection and preservation of the
environment and wildlife. They want to conserve or save what is in the environment, especially the
wildlife, plants, and other natural resources.
4. Wise Use Movement
After the environmental movement the wise use movement appeared. Critics see it as more of an
anti–environmentalist than anything. It is a bunch of groups promoting the expansion of private
property rights and reduction of government regulation of publicly held property. Some organized
opposition efforts have included environmental legislation such as wetland protection, and the
Endangered Species Act.
5. Conflict Industry
Conflict Industry is when there is conflict in an industry involving welfare, benefits, layoffs,
benefits and wages, unionization, and work hours. It is a situation where disputes arise between
employees and employers over matters related to the working conditions. Industrial conflict is
defined as "any disagreement or dispute between workers and workers or between workers and
employers regarding the condition of employments of workers and the general conditions relating to
their employment."

The Importance Of Environmentalism In Buddhism
Currently in the world there has been a lack of ways to rationalize protecting the environment
leading to the use of religion as the background for justification. Buddhism is positively seen as an
economic friendly religion by most people are wound the world, although some concepts are not
clear in this sense. Buddhism, especially engaged Buddhism, is congruous with environmental
advocacy because of different Buddhism doctrines and a Buddhists' compassion for all sentient
beings.
The origin of Buddhism does not say a lot about the ethics of the environment, but understanding
the religion it is clear that it is compatible greatly with environmental views. For example,
Stephanie Kaza in here Buddhist environmental activist piece said "Though the history of Buddhist
environmentalism is short, it has as its substance bright minds suggesting new ways to look at
things, teachers and writers inspiring others to address the challenges, and fledgling attempts to
practice Eco spiritual activism based in Buddhist principles". (Kaza 164) Many of these
interpretations of the environment came from modern western Buddhism as a reaction to the
environmental crisis currently. It was the Bodhisattva vow (which is a vow to liberate all sentient
beings) which have encouraged people to take action and protect the environment to liberate all
beings under leaders like Thich Nhat Hanh. Many ancient traditions of monks within Thailand,
where Theravada is mainly practiced, took ordination of trees

The Impact Of Environmentalism
Environmentalism and the impact of environmental issues on the domestic and foreign policy of the
United States Environmentalism impacts many different aspects of life. There are many different
ways to look at environmentalism, as the planet faces many different issues revolving around nature
and how it can impact human life in a certain way. Humans can impact environmentalism in a heavy
aspect, which is why there needs to be a domestic and foreign policy surrounding such a matter.
Environmentalism is a different way of thinking in which people try to care more about the planet
and the long term survival of earth. It means recognizing the planet's environmental problems and
coming up with solutions. (Woodford 2017) The environment is ... Show more content on

People should realize that the environment has its own value that needs to be protected, because
after all humans rely greatly on the environment for many things. The more people change the way
they look at the environment and try and increase the environment in many ways, the better life will
be for people, and also the environment can also start healing a lot sooner than it was doing before.
If people don't start taking action, the environment will not start be healed as soon as it should be
and the environment could in result decline. There are two main ways of environmental thought.
The first type is anthropocentric which means human centered. The second type is biocentric, which
means life centered. Anthropocentric essentially focuses on the negative effects that environmental
degradation has on human beings and their interests, including their interests in health, recreation,
and quality of life. (Elliott 2017) It mainly wants to explain the moral obligations that humans
should have towards nature, and that it should somewhat relate to relations humans between
humans, because the environment needs to be preserved for the future. If the environment is
mistreated now, then in the future the environment could decline drastically. If humans don't start
taking action now from a moral standpoint, then maybe twenty or thirty years down the road, there
are going to be certain environmental consequences. On

"Preserving nature, the deep ecologists say, has an intrinsic worth quite apart from any benefits

Environmentalism And Sustainable Development
Introduction/Background Information
Sustainable development, throughout time, has evolved various forms of definitions. However, this
term is used in reference to environmental, ecological, social, and economical development and in
terms of the dictionary reference, the term could be used in terms of trying to uphold, or the long
term effect of actions for a desired result (Naz, 2009, p.187). The dictionary definition is somewhat
parallel to the definition provided in the Brundtland Report "Our Common Future" (Naz, 2009, p.
187). In this report, the definition of sustainable development was thoroughly investigated. The
definition was as follows: sustainable development is fulfilling the needs in the present without

187). It started in the aftermath of the industrial revolution however, was revealed in Islam 1400
years ago. This now leads to Islamic environmentalism. Islam, the second largest religion in the
world, has teachings that provide a framework for every possible element in life. Islam is not just a
religion, it is a way of life and it's roots are in the Quran, the last holy book after Bible and Torah,
Sharia, Islamic law, and Hadeeth, sayings of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). To further
understand Islamic environmentalism, one needs to understand the relationship between sustainable
development and Islamic teachings. Muslims believe in God, also known as Allah (SWT) and they
appreciate the fact that Allah has created everything including the universe and have kept all of
nature in perfect harmony. Due to this blessing of his, Muslims are required to obey and uphold his
teachings. There is a verse from the Quran where Allah describes his infinite power: "And the
heaven He has raised high, and He has set up the balance. In order that you may not transgress the
balance and observe the weight with equity and do not make the balance deficient (7)" (Naz, 2009,
p. 188). This is just one of the verses from the holy Quran where Allah has described his majestic
power and due to his power, Muslims follow his every command as his commands define way of
life and give order to life. Now, in terms of the environment, there are over 500 verses in the

Introduction to Environmentalism
At this point many in the industry operators around the world are being squeezed by the global
economic crisis is a bit painful. This put pressure on operating costs involving wages, energy
consumption and costs related to environmental management in the industry. As a result, many in
the industry operators to take shortcuts to stop working as well as reduce the size of the production.
There are also among the industry players seeking to reduce the environmental monitoring report for
their premises in an effort to reduce the economic burden incurred. Some industry players spent
nearly 20 to 30 percent of the total cost of operations on the aspects of environmental management.

It involves increasing the capacity of workers at all skill levels. With the skilled workers in the
industrial maintenance costs of pollution control equipment can be reduced. It thus reduce
environmental pollution through continuous monitoring of performance (performance monitoring)
are carried out by environmental skilled workers.
The fifth strategy, refers to the recycling of waste generated in industrial operations. This can be
accomplished with the use of waste as raw material again, power generation, recovery (recovery)
and also use it for purposes other products. For example, the rice industry waste can be used as
feedstock for the production of compost. It can solve the problem of environmental pollution
through open burning which is always practiced. Besides the installation of a wastewater recycling
system used to help reduce water use in the food industry and cost of production.
In the global context of many industries have come into practice the concept of Cleaner Production,
and managed to reduce their operating costs. Among the industries that have successfully
implemented this concept is the food industry, electronic industry and the pharmaceutical industry.
For example, companies in Sandgate Castle Chemical Australia has successfully implemented the
concept of cleaner production to energy conservation through the conversion process flow and waste
recycling program to generate annual

Journal's Review: On Working–class Environmentalism: A Historical and Transnational Overview
Written by Stefania Barca in 2012
Abstract
This paper reviews from the article written by Stefania Barca, with the title of class
environmentalism: a historical and transnational overview. I will elaborate the problem of
environmental Justice in US and Brazil, in regards to the problem of the working class struggle in
promoting Environmental Justice. In here, I believe that the Environmental Justice will be achieved
if the government concern more into the welfare of the society, especially the working class. The
actions should be taken to ensure that the interest of several stakeholders will not disadvantage the
environment and the life of other people (working class). The problem of Environmental Justice
itself appears because of the policies of the government which are not well analyzed in regards to
the affect to both environment and communities.

exact sciences. Because the environmental issue itself affect not only the Mother Nature but also
human as the social creature that lives within the earth. In the globalization era, there appear many
environmental issues, such as the water scarcity, natural disaster, the rising of sea level, and the
climate change itself. As we all know that to counter these environmental issues, we can do several
actions, such as protecting the

In my opinion 'Environmentalism' in many ways is equivalent to 'Feminism'. Both the subjects have
been overlooked in the past by policy makers and corporations, have suffered injustice and are
fighting for their rights. Just as the world cannot progress entirely and achieve its true potential by
leaving one gender behind, in the same way we cannot achieve sustainable development by ignoring
our environment. As a young kid I didn't know what I and billion other Indians were missing in life
until I visited Singapore. I was awe–struck by the efficient public transport, less reliance on private
cars for movement, vertical development, cleanliness and high quality of life. One of the starkest
differences that I noticed was how I could not tell the rich from the poor which is so evident in
India. Other thing that I observed was how the entire city was connected seamlessly. Print media

American Environmentalism Essay
"The modern form of the word environment comes from an older word that we hardly use anymore:
environ, to surround, to form a ring around, to encircle" (Stoll 3). The meaning of the word
environment did not become a major factor in the lives of humanity until 1945. The tragic events
that led to the end of World War II sparked a chief movement in history: American
Environmentalism. Global decision–making changed as well as human unity due to the mere
purpose that fate of all people and the environment became intertwined (Stoll 1). I will further
discuss the dramatic attempts made by some Americans to bring the importance of preserving our
environment to the surface to show if and how we have evolved.

Not enough of humanity took an interest in what environed them. The interest was not sparked until
it threatened the life of humanity.
There were many sources that lead to environmentalism. Preserving the wilderness was just one
aspect of the progress made since 1945. Post WWII, Americans view on the resources used as well
as the way they treated their environment changed. Americans protested the abuse of the
environment (Stoll 11), and politically there were statements made against air and water pollution
(Stoll 11) by the president as well as women's organizations. "Novelist Earnest Callenbach imagined
a transformation in the entire political and material basis of American Society in the form of a new
nation...(Callenbach 111)." "Through this fictional device, Callenbach creates a world of complete
equality, but also one in which a nationally unifying solution to the problem of the environment
proved to be impossible" (Callenbach111).
We are steadily building and creating new devices and products that contribute to the pollution of
the atmosphere. For instance, there are far more cars on the road then there are people, and I see no
real progress in the actions taken in attempt to save the environment. The number of people
contributing to the harm of the environment is far greater then the number trying to preserve it. In

Market based environmentalism Essay examples
Market based environmentalism is a term which concentrates on the attainment of protection of the
environment by means of freely operating markets (Bruekner 2010, 61). Market based
environmental policy approaches help promote both environmentalism and competitiveness by
putting emphasis on the positive results rather than on the technologies (Bruekner 2010, 62). This
essay shall explain the advantages and weaknesses of natural step and natural capitalism and why
they are considered as market–based environmentalism.
The natural step framework is an approach for tackling environmental problems built on agreement

Also, there is not the issue where the society needs to be subject to conditions that challenge their
capacity to meet their needs (Bruekner 2010, 65).
However, the main problem with natural step framework is that there is an increase on the reliance
and consumption of supporting resources and the life supporting resources that are available are
declining (Bruekner 2010, 65).
On the other hand, natural capitalism refers to the natural resources and the environmental systems
that offer life support services to all living things. These services are of highly significant economic
value to the extent of being precious and beyond price. However, business practices and public
policies do not take into consideration the value attached to them. Therefore, natural capital is being
lost and ruined by the careless and inefficient use of natural resources. Natural capitalism sticks to
the promise of improved profitability and competitive advantages taking place because of the
implementation of this approach (Bruekner 2010, 67).
The natural capitalism approach also has various strengths. Organizations implementing the natural
capitalism approach will have the advantage of the decrease in operational costs, capital and time

Contemporary Environmentalism
Contemporary environmentalism and wilderness culture are often fraught with controversy, saddled
with remnants of obsolete ideas which continue to hinder their effectiveness and reception. Firstly,
the dominant environmental paradigm is fashioned in part from a mechanistic worldview, a relic of
Enlightenment thinking that espouses scientific objectivity. It relies on an underlying dichotomy of
wilderness and civilization, and implies superior significance of humans over Nature. Furthermore,
it preserves the racist tone of early conservationism.
Much of contemporary environmentalism stems from a mechanistic worldview. Characterized by
scientific objectivity, it regards the claims, methods and results of science as undisputable, thus
giving rise to the notion of scientific knowledge as power. This is best typified by the mind–body
dualism of Descartes which distinguishes the scientific, rational mind as on a higher realm than the
natural body. Similarly, Haraway defines Absolute Objectivity as "an external, disembodied point of
view" that provides an absolute – and hence, irrefutable – perspective on a given issue. It regards the
scientific gaze as an omniscient observer, while "the object of inquiry is passive and stable". This
has staggering consequences for environmentalism. Firstly, it implies a calculability of the world.
Adorno and Horkheimer lament that "Mythology has entered the profane", symbolizing the disdain
the mechanistic mind possesses for mystical

Princess Mononoke Environmentalism
In Michelle Smith and Elizabeth Parsons' article Animating child activism: Environmentalism and
Class Politics in Ghibli's Princess Mononoke (1997) and Fox's Fern Gully (1992), the argument is
made that the film Princess Mononoke, takes an anti–ethical approach to environmentalism. I do not
believe that the approach to environmentalism is anti–ethical. I believe that it is the typical ethical
response to those who wish to destroy the environment. Smith and Parsons also have very weak
evidence to support this argument of Princess Mononoke being anti–ethical.
Michelle Smith an Elizabeth Parsons make the argument in their article that in the film Princess
Mononoke, the humans are not held accountable for what they do, instead the forest spirits are.
While the forest spirits are blamed partially for the collapse of the forest, the humans are also
equally, if not greater, held accountable for their actions. About an hour into the movie, Ashitaka is

subsided several environmental struggles were weakening, possibly due to less sociological interest
seen in the 1960s and early 1970s. Environmental efforts in the 1980s experienced a surprising
resurgence and became a strong global social undertaking. Many people did not understand some
aspects of the environmental movement. One of the reasons for this lack of comprehension may
have been diversity. The terms race, gender, and class were not associated with environmentalism as
late as 1993. Gottlieb attempts to bring these terms into the environmental movement in Forcing the
Spring. Race, gender and class became more important in the environmental movement in the
1990s. Gottlieb attempts to show this new diversity and by doing this he suggest a revised view of
the environmental movement. This new view shows environmentalism as a group of "social

Environmentalism In Pope Francis
Pope Francis describes a relentless exploitation and destruction towards environmental discomfort,
for which he blamed apathy from the pursuit of profitable faith in political as well as technological
injustice. The Laudato Si' unambiguously accepts scientific causes that impacts the climate that
were beneficially man–made, stating "climate change is a global problem with grave implications:
environmental, social, economic, political and for the distribution of goods". Representing one of
the principals that challenges humanity. After great anticipation, Pope Francis determined and faced
the difficulties of climate change and pleaded for justice, to "enter into dialogue with all people
about our common home." The Pope reaches for new conclusions and is calling for a spiritual
transformation and a solid connection to Earth's ecosystems. The Laudato Si' is different, as it is not
addressed specifically to the one beliefs with additional groups added. Pope Francis invites the
people of the world to a dialogue on the subject of environmentalism. Pope Francis has written
Laudato Si' as caring for creation is something that is close to his heart. More fundamentally, Pope
Francis believes that there are substantial ecological complications today that must be addressed.
They include not only problems in the natural environment but also in the human sphere,
particularly among the disadvantaged. Pope Francis wrote the encyclical, dated 24 May 2015 and

Environmentalism Is Not A New Concept Essay
Environmentalism is not a new concept. It is a social movement that aims to protect and improve the
health of the environment. While humans have accepted this view of environmentalism for the
Holocene epoch, political environmentalist Paul Wapner proposes a renewed definition of
environmentalism that has emerged in the Anthropocene epoch. Wapner sees the Anthropocene as
an epoch of human geological influence, where humans have inflicted a signature on the earth,
leaving it "independent of human experience" (37). That is to say, humans have embedded
themselves into the earth systems, resulting in a new form of nature that is not autonomous, but
rather defined by a hybrid human–nature relationship. This concept of a human–nature hybridity is
the foundation for Wapner's argument of an environmentalism that embraces the post–nature age
and calls for a "more sustainable, just and ecologically healthy" (50) future.
Although Wapner emphasises an environmentalism that requires human action in the form of
sustainable development, his argument falls short by failing to define both sustainability and
sustainable development in the Anthropocene. Society defines sustainability as the ability to
maintain the health and balance of nature which directly contradicts Wapner's proposal for a
hybridized world. This contradiction poses the question of how Wapner's renewed environmentalism
affects sustainability. Or more specifically, how does the hybrid–nature relationship affect

Environmentalism Personal Statement
I doubt anyone will contest that environmentalism is an elitist field. There are many reasons for this.
To be honest, I am a big ole city slicker. But in field research is necessary and I know it won't
always be comfortable; I assume Georgia in the middle of the summer will be uncomfortable. I also
have yet to do hardcore aquatic bio research. I did take a full year in General Chemistry, and I have
done environmental lab work, but in neither class did I ever feel a hundred percent comfortable. I
think this program can provide something my classes could not: comfort in a scientific environment.
I have only made it this far in my environmental studies, because of my department head: Marc Los

Environmental Impact Of Environmentalism
As people grew more environmentally conscious conflict about the protection of the environment
and its ecosystem arose, so environmentalists and organizations such as the Department of Interior's
U.S Fish and Wildlife Service fought for greater protection of endangered species and the
Endangered Species Act of 1973 was passed. However, the passing of this act caused a greater
conflict as its economic role was not clear, and some argued that it would become an economic
burden. Starting in the 1970s, people of the United States began to fight for the protection of all
living things and their habitats, as they saw the damage that the rapidly growing economy was
having on the environment. This is shown through various events and acts ... Show more content on

The ESA provided the establishment of state programs, and "the conservation of ecosystems upon
which threatened and endangered species of fish, wildlife, and plants depend" (Digest of Federal
Resource Laws). To conserve the ecosystem, the ESA first listed the species they decided were
endangered, and then they enforced the prohibition of the taking, selling, and transportation of those
endangered species (Digest of Federal Resource Laws). However, not everything about the
Endangered Species Act of 1973 was clear as boundaries of how far the act could go economically
to protect the endangered species were not defined. In fact, it did not have much of a boundary when
it came to the economic cost of achieving its purpose, and this would later become a huge problem
because it would cause a greater divide between those who supported the act and those who did not.
This divide would cause conflict about the protection of endangered species once again. Even
though in its future years the Endangered Species Act of 1973 would have to be revised, when it
first came out it was a great solution to the environmental problem at hand. It helped preserve the
ecosystem by providing the necessary resources required to create a safe environment for species in
need. (INSERT SOMETHING ABOUT SECTION 7 IN THIS PARAGRAPH) There were no set
economic boundaries when it came to the Endangered Species Act of 1973, so a conflict arose in

The Idea Of Evangelical Environmentalism In The United States
"You shall not pollute the land in which you live, for blood pollutes the land, and no atonement can
be made for the land for the blood that is shed in it, except by the blood of the one who shed it. You
shall not defile the land in which you live, in the midst of which I dwell, for I the Lord dwell in the
midst of the people of Israel." Numbers 35: 33–34
Historically, Christians primary focus has been on heaven and the afterlife and little focus has been
placed on the health of the environment. In recent years, there has been a new movement surface
called Creation Care or Evangelical Environmentalism. This movement stems from scriptures in the
Bible saying that man is to keep and maintain creation. "The Lord God took the man and put him in

Multiple religious groups in the 1980's organized anti–nuclear protests which included hundreds of
thousands of people. Some of the groups involved in this protest include the Southern Baptist
convention and the Episcopal Church. The Evangelical Climate Initiative is another accomplishment
of Creation Care. This Initiative was launched in February of 2006 by a group of 85 Christians. This
group's main goals are environmental reform and ending global warming by reducing carbon
dioxide emissions. This group plans to accomplish these goals through federal legislator, discussions
regarding global warming and climate change in church, and media advertisements showing the
links between global warming and natural disasters. The president of the National Association of
Evangelicals spoke for himself saying, ""There is no doubt about it in my mind that climate change
is happening, and there is no doubt about it that it would be wise for us to stop doing the foolish
things we're doing that could potentially be causing this. In my mind there is no downside to being
cautious."– Reverend Ted Haggard. While many Christian's may be under the impression that global
warming is a myth created by the government to help them gain more control, Evangelical

Radicalism And Radical Environmentalism
Environmental writers have always written radically about the environment because that is what is
necessary. The difference between the radical ecologists of today is radical theory becoming radical
action. Henry David Thoreau wrote plenty of radical ideas, though his most often radical thought
comes from "On the Duty of Civil Disobedience". Civil Disobedience provides modern day activists
and ecologists with the foundation of why it is important think critically about government actions,
as well as showing readers direct action against the government. Thoreau contributes partially to the
eventual formation of the radical ecology movement in this sense. The other half of the ideology of
radical environmentalists was popularized by Aldo Leopold in Sand County Almanac. Leopold's
idea of a land ethic and biocentrism is the main ideology that drives radical environmentalists. Only
when Leopold and Thoreau are put together does a full picture begin to form of what it takes to
understand radical ecologists. Thoreau and Leopold lay the groundwork for creating the perfect
radical environmental movement; where Thoreau gives instruction on action against the government
and the majority, Leopold gives the radical movement the idea to act on, biocentrism. To understand
the conversation of radicalism as informed by Thoreau and Leopold, there are some ideas that need
to be defined. What does it mean for an environmentalist to be radical? Is radicalism the same as
terrorism? Radicalism is an umbrella term, often used in a myriad of ways. Analyzing the
environmental movement, radical ideology is the concept that the world is unsustainable, and the
ideas put forth to make the world sustainable require a massive shift in collective societal thought as
well as a massive shift in the way most communities, cities, states, etc. live (Sessions, 1995). The
shift in collective thought would be away from anthropomorphism, the idea that humans are the
most important thing in the world, towards biocentrism, the idea that all things in nature matter
equally. An idea, or action, can be radical without being violent towards living things. This is the
important distinction between radicalism and terrorism. For an action to be terrorism, it

The Intellectual Roots Of Modern Day Environmentalism
Many people today do not understand or appreciate the lasting effects that the environmental
movement of the 1960s brought to our world. The things that most people immediately associate
with the 1960s usually include the Civil Rights movement, Vietnam, the space race, student protests
and the hippie generation, underscoring the fact that the environmental movement is often put aside
relative these seemingly more iconic symbols of this decade. The 1960s certainly did not mark the
first time that efforts were made in the United States to change attitudes, policies, and views
regarding the environment. Many trace the intellectual roots of modern–day environmentalism all
the way back to the 19th century American writers and philosophers Ralph Waldo Emerson and
Henry David Thoreau, most notably the latter's 1854 work, Walden. President Theodore Roosevelt
set aside more public land for national parks than all of his predecessors combined. His policies and
views about conservation remained dominate for decades (nps.org). The efforts made by these
figures in the mid–1800s through the early part of the 20th century were crucial for paving the way
for what would come in later years. The main reason for such progress in the environmental
movement in the 1960s is because of influential leaders, the prominent role of media, and a
generation of people who were not afraid to initiate change.
Influential figures in the 1960s were the first ones to bring to light the urgency of the

Environmentalism In The 20th Century: Social Media Analysis
Environmentalism in the 20th century largely materialized from NGOs and activists that bypassed
mainstream news and communicate with the public dangers and threats to the environment via
alternative media (Anderson, 1997; Corbett, 2006; DeLuca & Delicath, 2003; Lester, 2010). This
was in response to traditional news that overlooked or sensationalized much of what they did so
environmental groups became more political savvy and sophisticated using media. Despite anti–
environmental policy, public awareness grew, as did membership in environmental groups. By the
1990s, however, the news turned hostile toward these groups as a result public interest waned and
many groups faced a decline in donations from large corporations. As we saw in Chapter ... Show

People's Climate March in New York City on September 21, 2014, which was part of a coordinated
global event before the United Nations Climate Summit that demanded real action to fight climate
change. Additionally, WWF rallied supporters via the web and social media to participate in Earth

Environmentalism In Princess Mononoke
Hayao Miyazaki is an ingenious Japanese animator and film director, and has created many beloved
masterpieces that are both visually enchanting and rich in meaning. Also known as the 'Japanese
Walt Disney', Miyazaki has won numerous awards, for films including Spirited Away, Laputa:
Castle In The Sky and My Neighbour Totoro. Each of his movies have messages integrated into the
storyline that delve into deeper issues relating to the current world and society. Princess Mononoke
is no exception and the intentions, choices and influences of Miyazaki are instrumental to
understanding his creation.
Unlike Miyazaki's usual 'entertainment first, lessons second' approach, Princess Mononoke was
produced to inspire people to think about the issues within the film. In Princess Mononoke,
Miyazaki explores themes such as the environment and the conflict between humans and nature, and
pacifism.
Environmentalism is often depicted in Miyazaki's films, due to his belief that people are intended to
live amongst nature. The basis of Princess Mononoke is centered around the forest, which is alive
and thriving despite the growing threat of industrilisation. Throughout the movie, beautiful and
enchanting Japanese landscapes are shown, with clear signs of life (such as the Kodama spirits) in
the forest. Kodama spirits are known in Japanese folklore to inhabit the trees, and if one were to cut
down the tree, they would be cursed. The Kodama spirits are also representative of guardians of the

The Rise of Environmentalism in the United States Essay
The Rise of Environmentalism in the United States Eden; it is a word that, for most, inspires
thoughts of lush green trees, untarnished fruit, soft green grass, perfect blue skies, and harmony
within nature. According to Judeo–Christian teachings, this is similar to the state in which the world
began. It was an environment unspoiled by humans, unblemished by their pollution. Such a pristine
utopia is often hard for a person to imagine today amongst the industrial smokestacks and their
billowing gray clouds, between the rancid landfill mounds, and surrounded by stagnant pools of oil–
slicked water. The environment in America today is far from Eden, but there is a valiant battle being

However, until around 1920 nature was little more than the supplier of life sustaining necessities3.
From nature Americans obtained wood for their homes, fuel for their fires, and plants and game for
their meals. At this time the concern for nature was not for it's innate beauty or pure state, but rather
for it's productivity. If nature was providing ample food and shelter is was serving its necessitated
purpose. As the American economy grew in the 1920's so too did peoples personal finances. With a
booming economy people had larger spending, or discretionary funds. This brought upon the shift
from a market of necessities to a market of convenience goods. At this point there is still very little
mention of the environment. One could argue that the Soil Conservation Act of 1933 showed
concern for the environment, but the real motive behind the Act was a concern for crop productivity.
With a passing of the Soil Conservation and the similar Taylor Grazing Act, the idea of "natural
resources" is popularized. The idea of natural resources, however, still portrays the idea that people
saw nature as a service to humans. It isn't until the F. D. Roosevelt administration that nature is
preserved simply for being natural. The era of FDR was one of secure economy and growing
incomes. With the popularization of the automobile, people began urbanizing around cities and
living further from their work places, many gained leisure and vacation time, and for the first time

Environmentalism: A Global History Summary
INTRODUCTION
Ramachandra Guha (2000) wrote in his book Environmentalism: A Global History that "The
environmental movement has refused to go away and, some would say, refused to grow up,
retaining the vigor and intensity but also the impatience and intolerance of an ever–youthful social
movement." His words are praising the success of environmentalism as a worldwide, far–reaching
movement across decades. As was explained in his book, the global history of environmentalism
showed an evolution, which took this movement step by step into successful episodes in different
domains including law, global market, and the influence of Non–Governmental Organizations.
However, some environmentalists, including Peter Dauvergne (2016) in his book ... Show more

Garrett Hardin (1968) gave a typical example of the tragedy of the commons. Herdsmen all put as
many cattle to a field as possible to make more profit, leading to the destruction of the common
field, which could no longer support the livestock anymore. He pointed out that every action to
maximize the interests of an individual would add up and destroy the whole in the end, and the
freedom of breeding and using the commons would lead to a depletion of natural resources, loss of
biodiversity, and a severe pollution of the environment. This tragedy of the was already seen in 1968
when the world population was 3.5 billion. This number is less than half of the population now in
2017, and it is estimated that the global population will rise to 11.2 billion by the year 2100 (United
Nations, 2017). However, the Earth cannot expand its volume accordingly. Human overpopulation
has already exceeded the carrying capacity of the Earth, but this issue is not something that can be
controlled immediately. There is always time lag before seeing the effect of laws to control
population and the rational usage of the commons. As a result, the work of environmentalists is
continuous and persistent.
Speaking of industrialization, people cannot deny its positive influence on driving global
economies, promoting infrastructure development, creating jobs, and boosting the Gross Domestic
Production. According to the 2016 Global Manufacturing Competitiveness Index,

Environmentalism And Poverty
Market Liberals focus on economic growth and believe in an unregulated free market system with
the ability to self regulate through consumer demand. They believe that environmental damages that
may stem from economic growth will be corrected once a society is economically satisfied
(wealthy) and shift their focus away from financial need. In my opinion, the problem with this
philosophy is that in a society that uses overconsumption as a way of comparing wealth and
sometimes self worth, the planet would likely be completely depleted of all resources before this
group is satisfied. Additionally they don't really have a clear plan for how to alleviate poverty
because they blame the existence of poverty on political failures and over regulation. Market
liberals tend to minimize environmental impact and claim poverty is the main contributor to
environmental degradation.
Institutionalists have similar beliefs to market liberals; however, they focus on the need for
institutions to regulate economies and the environment to ensure resources are managed in a way
that does not compromise the needs of future generations. They believe we still have time to address
our environmental problems. Institutionalists focus on improving living standards while improving
the environment (for humans).
Bioenvironmentalists focus on environmental health, believe the earth has a limited carrying
capacity and that humans are near or already exceeding it. Overconsumption and population are

Environmentalism And Environment
In the wake of nuclear threats, and ever–industrializing world, environmentalism was conceived.
People began to finally consider how the actions and needs of humanity were negatively impacting
the physical world around us, and began to become a voice in opposition to environmental
degradation on many different levels. While environmentalism in the past has often been pure in
intent, many of the goals involve governmental change, and forgo focus on the individual. While
regulations and laws in favor of the environment are obviously positive, they are worthless if they
are not implemented on an individual level. Individual and local efforts, in terms of
environmentalism, are often the most impactful and effective, eventually leading to change on a
larger scale. With this idea in mind, environmentalism cannot just be something that occurs in wake
of a threat or focuses on large–scale rules and regulations; it must work on shifting the perspective
of individuals on a personal level. During the 19th and 20th century, both rapid industrialism and
nuclear threats caused a new perspective on the role of the environment to humanity. Nuclear
weapons allowed many to realize that the fate of humanity and the environment were linked up with
one another. If the environment is destroyed, humanity will ultimately perish too. Industrial
practices, specifically the ways in which wasted resources, chemical emissions, landscape
degradation, increased population, and garbage impacted human

Environmentalism In The United States
The newer wave of environmentalism has set out in several different, yet efficient ways in the
United States. Back in 1970, the United States introduced the Environmental Protection Agency.
Since then, people have created efficient and simple ways to reduce plastic waste, to help prevent
the Earth from becoming a landfill. A few Americans, in the 1960's, sorted their waste, and few
could have answered the question that asked if they were an "environmentalist" (Patterson, 510).
The 1960's were pivotal to the federal government's realization of the harmful effects of air, water,
and ground pollutants (Patterson, 513). On December 2, 1970, the United States Environmental
Protection Agency, also known as EPA, was created. The United States EPA was created in the wake
of elevated concern of environmental pollution. It was established to consolidate a variety of
research, monitoring, standard–setting and enforcement activities to ensure environmental
protection, all in one agency (United States Environmental Protection Agency). The average
American creates about one hundred–thirty pounds of trash a month, and an article in the journal
Nature estimates that global solid–waste generation will triple, to eleven million tons a day, by the
year 2100 (Semuels). Plastic does not break down; it's not biodegradable nor does it ... Show more

Lessons from a Third World Perspective on Environmentalism
Possibly more than any of the other articles we have read so far,
Ramachandra Guha's article "Radical Environmentalism and Wilderness
Preservation: A Third World Critique" made me think. In analyzing the
Western deep ecology movement, he criticized its focus on preservation of
wild areas. By doing this, he was directly criticizing what I have long
thought of as my main goal as an "environmentalist." One of the first
things that turned me on to environmental issues when I was younger was my
horror at the soaring rate of rainforest destruction so dramatically
portrayed to us in 9th grade biology class. Since then, by following a
biology track ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But reading the article, I was struck by
what we can learn from each other and from where we overlap.
Guha's article critiqued the four main tenants of deep ecology
(which are, as he sees them,: a shift from anthropocentric to biocentric
ethics, a focus on preservation of wilderness, an invocation of Eastern
spiritual traditions, and a perception of being the vanguard of current
environmentalism) in order to show that, as is, deep ecology would only
meet its goals at the expense of the Third World. He gave the example of
"Project Tiger" in India, in which Western preservationists organizations
encouraged the designation of a network of parks to preserve the tiger's
habitat but only by moving whole villages of people and prohibiting them
from using the land (272). Of course, this type of conflict between
protecting the habitat of an endangered species and letting the land be
used by locals does not only occur in Third World contexts – it is a common
debate, including of course the famous Spotted Owl example within our own
country.
Although it seems clear that a conflict between anthropocentric and
biocentric world views is at work here, Guha claims that the dichotomy is
useless (271). I have also seen it as somewhat problematic, even from my
own biological

Environmentalism In The Lorax
Dr. Seuss did not only use his stories to influence and teach children to read, but he used them to
encourage children to think critically about serious issues happening in the world around us. In
hopes that the adults of the future become aware of their surroundings and correct the mistakes of
today's society. In Dr.Seussʻs children story, The Lorax displays events of greed, industrialization,
and the desperate need to protect and care for our environment. The series of greedy events begins
when the Onceler comes across a land filled with truffle trees, which he finds as an area to build his
business and use the trees as a source of money to transform into a clothing item he created,
Thneads. Through the events that occur within the story of The Lorax, Dr.Seuss attempts to inform
children reading that if we continue to put our wants before the needs of our environment, our
ecosystem in result will slowly begin to lose its meaning. Dr.Seuss uses the curious boy who comes
across the dead land, which the Lorax and all his friends once lived, as the children who read the
story in hopes to gain more insight of the events that occurred during this time of despair along with
a solution. The Onceler takes advantage of the truffula trees to make Threads, which is a clothing
item that can transform into anything that you desire. The greediness of the Onceler shows that if
society continues to disrespect the land, the resources it provides for us will begin to decrease. In

The problem with some environmentalist is putting nature before God. Rich Deem stated that,
"Many Christians have reacted against the environmental movement, probably because of the
tendency by many environmentalists not only to protect the earth and its creatures, but to actually
worship the creation instead of the creator" (2009). In the Bible, Exodus 20:3–4 say, "You must not
have any other god but me. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of
anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea" (NLT). Anything or anybody that is worship or

Environmentalism And Environmentalism

  • 1. Environmentalism And Environmentalism As technology continues to advance, so does one's level of research. The internet provides a plethora of information to those seeking answers to pertinent questions–questions specifically regarding health and environmentalism. Before the internet, people typically relied on advice from friends, doctors, or sayings. We've all heard "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." But now that the times are changing and more information is readily available at the click of our smart phone, is it time to question information that has been engrained in us since childhood. Veganism, a plant–based diet that has become increasingly more popular in the past few years, arguably is a not a "trend," and perhaps adopting this way of living could in fact save the planet. In his article, "Go Vegan, save the planet," Wang acknowledges that going Vegan is not an easy transition. "It requires overcoming our habits and our tastes, learning new ways to cook, planning during travel, and navigating the social aspects of eating and meal sharing" (Wang, George C). Environmentalism and humanity have a direct correlation when it comes to the consumption of animals. To eat or not to eat? Ethical or not ethical? Is one following their moral compass before devouring beef? However, author of "Being vegan isn't as good for humanity as you think," Chase Purdy suggest the only way to reach environmental efficiency is by "throwing vegans a bone." When applied to an entire global population, the vegan diet wastes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. It Has Been Argued That Canadian Environmentalism Occurred It has been argued that Canadian environmentalism occurred in a series of waves throughout the countries growth and development. Upon colonization the Canadian landscape was abundant in resources, the opportunities limitless. Over the course of a century industrialization had swept the nation. The rapid depletion of resources initiated the development of numerous private organizations that sought to control, maintain, and ensure longevity of such resources. This force would continue to reshape along with the industrial demands and ever–changing landscape. It is imperative to provide context regarding the evolution of the environmental movement that took place in Canada, in order to comprehend the role non–governmental organizations played ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gradually conservationist efforts of resource preservation developed, characterizing North America's first wave of environmentalism. Individuals involved within Canada's forestry industry developed many of the earliest conservation efforts. The rapid depletion of Canadian forests forced many to advocate for the development of controlled harvesting and reserved areas. By 1900, the Canadian Forestry Association was established. Despite Canada's earliest efforts, their neighbours to the south were generally further advanced with their efforts. Such gap in national efforts can be viewed as a matter of population differences, industrial expansion, and economic circumstances. The American settlements were much further developed in many respects than their counterparts, and had demonstrated anthropogenic harm throughout their growth. In 1909, American President Theodore Roosevelt, invited both Mexico and Canada to join the United States at the North American Conservation Conference. This conference would lead to the establishment of Canada's Commission of Conservation. Canada's Commission of Conservation developed recommendations and environmental ethics that can be viewed as the seeds of modern environmentalism. The development of national parks also illustrates the difference between American and Canadian conservation. In 1885, Banff became Canada's first national park, while their neighbours had established their first national park, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Mental Environmentalism Summary In Micah White's "Mental Environmentalism", the author emphasizes the detrimental effects imprudent and pervasive commercial advertising has on society and compares it to a dystopia where we are captivated by consumerism. White explains that we must maintain a healthy mental environment because our external reality is essentially a reflection of our internal world and with the way advertisements have plagued our minds, it has resulted in devastating global issues like climate change. With constant exposure to advertisements daily, our ability and potential to be imaginative and think freely is limited, both traits that are vital for a society to thrive and flourish. • 4. Radical Environmentalism Research Paper As environmental issues continually enter into our view through the news and our own personal research and interests we hear many stories about the good and bad that is happening to our environment. The stories tell us about the efforts made to clean up our rivers oceans and lake and maybe the problems that morally impact us to clean them. There are many different responses to the negative, or what one would perceive as negative, effects of our human impact on our environment. One such response and environmental view is that of Radical Environmentalism which can be associated with Eco–terrorism. Radical Environmentalism is a branch of Grassroots that come from an ecocentric view that is frustrated with modern environmentalism. They have the base view that, human society , as it is now constituted, is utterly unsustainable and must be reconstructed according to an entirely different socioeconomic logic and that a sustainable society must be small in scale and modest and technology (Lewis 2). Eco–Terrorism is defined as acts of violence that are committed in support of ecological and or environmental interests, against persons or property. Those individuals and organizations that take part in eco–terrorism reject the label eco–terrorist as a descriptive label for their tactics and prefer economic sabotage or ecotage (Vanderheiden 426). Ecotage mentioned previously, are the acts that radical environmentalist groups take against those things which don't comply with their environmental views. These actions are sometime destructive to private property and although not always directed to other people specifically, can be dangerous to those participating and others. Activists viewed ecotage as economic warfare against those who would destroy wilderness areas. By vandalizing equipment; pulling up survey stakes; driving metal, ceramic or quartz spikes into trees, and so on, practitioners hoped to halt the destruction by making it unprofitable (Taylor 14). Groups known as the Earth Liberation Front or ELF and activists of Earth First! are such organizations. We will go into detail about ELF and Earth First! in a later ... • 5. American Environmentalism Essay The status of nature and the environment in American society had not been given much priority in the political sphere due to it being deeming trivial, and its proponents basing their argument on moral and aesthetic grounds, yet the surge of scientific data and new information through the birth of the field of ecology, would prioritize the status of America's natural environment in the political process, and lashed back against the increasingly polluted world Americans lived in, on a legal level. The concept of environmentalism had been revitalized in the midst of scientific advancement, where environmental organizations such as the Wilderness Society and the Sierra Club entered the social justice movements of the 20th century reenergized, with a commitment that was stronger than ever to environmental efforts. Emancipatory environmentalism is human–welfare ecology understanding that aims to enhance life by creating a safe and clean environment, is a part of wide concern with even justice and reflected tendency, later industrial societies to place more importance on "quality–of–life" issues than on traditional economic concerns. The other understanding is anthropocentric this approaches the negative effects of environmental degradation has on humans and their interest, health, recreation, and quality of life. The Importance Of Environmentalism In Buddhism Currently in the world there has been a lack of ways to rationalize protecting the environment leading to the use of religion as the background for justification. Buddhism is positively seen as an economic friendly religion by most people are wound the world, although some concepts are not clear in this sense. Buddhism, especially engaged Buddhism, is congruous with environmental advocacy because of different Buddhism doctrines and a Buddhists' compassion for all sentient beings. The origin of Buddhism does not say a lot about the ethics of the environment, but understanding the religion it is clear that it is compatible greatly with environmental views. For example, Stephanie Kaza in here Buddhist environmental activist piece said "Though the history of Buddhist environmentalism is short, it has as its substance bright minds suggesting new ways to look at things, teachers and writers inspiring others to address the challenges, and fledgling attempts to practice Eco spiritual activism based in Buddhist principles". (Kaza 164) Many of these interpretations of the environment came from modern western Buddhism as a reaction to the environmental crisis currently. People should realize that the environment has its own value that needs to be protected, because after all humans rely greatly on the environment for many things. The more people change the way they look at the environment and try and increase the environment in many ways, the better life will be for people, and also the environment can also start healing a lot sooner than it was doing before. If people don't start taking action, the environment will not start be healed as soon as it should be and the environment could in result decline. There are two main ways of environmental thought. The first type is anthropocentric which means human centered. The second type is biocentric, which means life centered. Anthropocentric essentially focuses on the negative effects that environmental degradation has on human beings and their interests, including their interests in health, recreation, and quality of life. (Elliott 2017) It mainly wants to explain the moral obligations that humans should have towards nature, and that it should somewhat relate to relations humans between humans, because the environment needs to be preserved for the future. The dictionary definition is somewhat parallel to the definition provided in the Brundtland Report "Our Common Future" (Naz, 2009, p. 187). Islam is not just a religion, it is a way of life and it's roots are in the Quran, the last holy book after Bible and Torah, Sharia, Islamic law, and Hadeeth, sayings of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). To further understand Islamic environmentalism, one needs to understand the relationship between sustainable development and Islamic teachings. Muslims believe in God, also known as Allah (SWT) and they appreciate the fact that Allah has created everything including the universe and have kept all of nature in perfect harmony. Due to this blessing of his, Muslims are required to obey and uphold his teachings. There is a verse from the Quran where Allah describes his infinite power: "And the heaven He has raised high, and He has set up the balance. In order that you may not transgress the balance and observe the weight with equity and do not make the balance deficient (7)" (Naz, 2009, p. 188). In here, I believe that the Environmental Justice will be achieved if the government concern more into the welfare of the society, especially the working class. Both the subjects have been overlooked in the past by policy makers and corporations, have suffered injustice and are fighting for their rights. Just as the world cannot progress entirely and achieve its true potential by leaving one gender behind, in the same way we cannot achieve sustainable development by ignoring our environment. As a young kid I didn't know what I and billion other Indians were missing in life until I visited Singapore. I was awe–struck by the efficient public transport, less reliance on private cars for movement, vertical development, cleanliness and high quality of life. One of the starkest differences that I noticed was how I could not tell the rich from the poor which is so evident in India. Other thing that I observed was how the entire city was connected seamlessly. Print media and internet have been a great influence in my life since my childhood. • 16. American Environmentalism Essay "The modern form of the word environment comes from an older word that we hardly use anymore: environ, to surround, to form a ring around, to encircle" (Stoll 3). The meaning of the word environment did not become a major factor in the lives of humanity until 1945. The tragic events that led to the end of World War II sparked a chief movement in history: American Environmentalism. Global decision–making changed as well as human unity due to the mere purpose that fate of all people and the environment became intertwined (Stoll 1). I will further discuss the dramatic attempts made by some Americans to bring the importance of preserving our environment to the surface to show if and how we have evolved. We are steadily building and creating new devices and products that contribute to the pollution of the atmosphere. Market based environmentalism Essay examples Market based environmentalism is a term which concentrates on the attainment of protection of the environment by means of freely operating markets (Bruekner 2010, 61). Market based environmental policy approaches help promote both environmentalism and competitiveness by putting emphasis on the positive results rather than on the technologies (Bruekner 2010, 62). This essay shall explain the advantages and weaknesses of natural step and natural capitalism and why they are considered as market–based environmentalism. On the other hand, natural capitalism refers to the natural resources and the environmental systems that offer life support services to all living things. These services are of highly significant economic value to the extent of being precious and beyond price. However, business practices and public policies do not take into consideration the value attached to them. Therefore, natural capital is being lost and ruined by the careless and inefficient use of natural resources. Natural capitalism sticks to the promise of improved profitability and competitive advantages taking place because of the implementation of this approach (Bruekner 2010, 67). • 19. Contemporary Environmentalism Contemporary environmentalism and wilderness culture are often fraught with controversy, saddled with remnants of obsolete ideas which continue to hinder their effectiveness and reception. Firstly, the dominant environmental paradigm is fashioned in part from a mechanistic worldview, a relic of Enlightenment thinking that espouses scientific objectivity. It relies on an underlying dichotomy of wilderness and civilization, and implies superior significance of humans over Nature. Furthermore, it preserves the racist tone of early conservationism. Much of contemporary environmentalism stems from a mechanistic worldview. Characterized by scientific objectivity, it regards the claims, methods and results of science as undisputable, thus giving rise to the notion of scientific knowledge as power. This is best typified by the mind–body dualism of Descartes which distinguishes the scientific, rational mind as on a higher realm than the natural body. Similarly, Haraway defines Absolute Objectivity as "an external, disembodied point of view" that provides an absolute – and hence, irrefutable – perspective on a given issue. It regards the scientific gaze as an omniscient observer, while "the object of inquiry is passive and stable". This has staggering consequences for environmentalism. Firstly, it implies a calculability of the world. Adorno and Horkheimer lament that "Mythology has entered the profane", symbolizing the disdain the mechanistic mind possesses for mystical ... I do not believe that the approach to environmentalism is anti–ethical. I believe that it is the typical ethical response to those who wish to destroy the environment. Smith and Parsons also have very weak evidence to support this argument of Princess Mononoke being anti–ethical. Michelle Smith an Elizabeth Parsons make the argument in their article that in the film Princess Mononoke, the humans are not held accountable for what they do, instead the forest spirits are. By the late 1970s, after the Vietnam War was over and many of the sociological and political issues had subsided several environmental struggles were weakening, possibly due to less sociological interest seen in the 1960s and early 1970s. Environmental efforts in the 1980s experienced a surprising resurgence and became a strong global social undertaking. Many people did not understand some aspects of the environmental movement. One of the reasons for this lack of comprehension may have been diversity. The terms race, gender, and class were not associated with environmentalism as late as 1993. Gottlieb attempts to bring these terms into the environmental movement in Forcing the Spring. Race, gender and class became more important in the environmental movement in the 1990s. Environmentalism In Pope Francis Pope Francis describes a relentless exploitation and destruction towards environmental discomfort, for which he blamed apathy from the pursuit of profitable faith in political as well as technological injustice. The Laudato Si' unambiguously accepts scientific causes that impacts the climate that were beneficially man–made, stating "climate change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic, political and for the distribution of goods". • 24. Environmentalism Is Not A New Concept Essay Environmentalism is not a new concept. It is a social movement that aims to protect and improve the health of the environment. While humans have accepted this view of environmentalism for the Holocene epoch, political environmentalist Paul Wapner proposes a renewed definition of environmentalism that has emerged in the Anthropocene epoch. Wapner sees the Anthropocene as an epoch of human geological influence, where humans have inflicted a signature on the earth, leaving it "independent of human experience" (37). That is to say, humans have embedded themselves into the earth systems, resulting in a new form of nature that is not autonomous, but rather defined by a hybrid human–nature relationship. This concept of a human–nature hybridity is the foundation for Wapner's argument of an environmentalism that embraces the post–nature age and calls for a "more sustainable, just and ecologically healthy" (50) future. Although Wapner emphasises an environmentalism that requires human action in the form of sustainable development, his argument falls short by failing to define both sustainability and sustainable development in the Anthropocene. Society defines sustainability as the ability to maintain the health and balance of nature which directly contradicts Wapner's proposal for a hybridized world. This contradiction poses the question of how Wapner's renewed environmentalism affects sustainability. Or more specifically, how does the hybrid–nature relationship affect sustainable ... However, not everything about the Endangered Species Act of 1973 was clear as boundaries of how far the act could go economically to protect the endangered species were not defined. In fact, it did not have much of a boundary when it came to the economic cost of achieving its purpose, and this would later become a huge problem because it would cause a greater divide between those who supported the act and those who did not. This divide would cause conflict about the protection of endangered species once again. • 28. Radicalism And Radical Environmentalism Environmental writers have always written radically about the environment because that is what is necessary. The difference between the radical ecologists of today is radical theory becoming radical action. Henry David Thoreau wrote plenty of radical ideas, though his most often radical thought comes from "On the Duty of Civil Disobedience". Civil Disobedience provides modern day activists and ecologists with the foundation of why it is important think critically about government actions, as well as showing readers direct action against the government. Thoreau contributes partially to the eventual formation of the radical ecology movement in this sense. The other half of the ideology of radical environmentalists was popularized by Aldo Leopold in Sand County Almanac. Leopold's idea of a land ethic and biocentrism is the main ideology that drives radical environmentalists. Only when Leopold and Thoreau are put together does a full picture begin to form of what it takes to understand radical ecologists. Thoreau and Leopold lay the groundwork for creating the perfect radical environmental movement; where Thoreau gives instruction on action against the government and the majority, Leopold gives the radical movement the idea to act on, biocentrism. To understand the conversation of radicalism as informed by Thoreau and Leopold, there are some ideas that need to be defined. What does it mean for an environmentalist to be radical? Is radicalism the same as terrorism? Radicalism is an umbrella term, often used in a myriad of ways. Analyzing the environmental movement, radical ideology is the concept that the world is unsustainable, and the ideas put forth to make the world sustainable require a massive shift in collective societal thought as well as a massive shift in the way most communities, cities, states, etc. live (Sessions, 1995). The shift in collective thought would be away from anthropomorphism, the idea that humans are the most important thing in the world, towards biocentrism, the idea that all things in nature matter equally. An idea, or action, can be radical without being violent towards living things. This is the important distinction between radicalism and terrorism. For an action to be terrorism, it ... The things that most people immediately associate with the 1960s usually include the Civil Rights movement, Vietnam, the space race, student protests and the hippie generation, underscoring the fact that the environmental movement is often put aside relative these seemingly more iconic symbols of this decade. The 1960s certainly did not mark the first time that efforts were made in the United States to change attitudes, policies, and views regarding the environment. Many trace the intellectual roots of modern–day environmentalism all the way back to the 19th century American writers and philosophers Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, most notably the latter's 1854 work, Walden. President Theodore Roosevelt set aside more public land for national parks than all of his predecessors combined. His policies and views about conservation remained dominate for decades (nps.org). The efforts made by these figures in the mid–1800s through the early part of the 20th century were crucial for paving the way for what would come in later years. The main reason for such progress in the environmental movement in the 1960s is because of influential leaders, the prominent role of media, and a generation of people who were not afraid to initiate change. From nature Americans obtained wood for their homes, fuel for their fires, and plants and game for their meals. If nature was providing ample food and shelter is was serving its necessitated purpose. As the American economy grew in the 1920's so too did peoples personal finances. With a booming economy people had larger spending, or discretionary funds. This brought upon the shift from a market of necessities to a market of convenience goods. At this point there is still very little mention of the environment. One could argue that the Soil Conservation Act of 1933 showed concern for the environment, but the real motive behind the Act was a concern for crop productivity. With a passing of the Soil Conservation and the similar Taylor Grazing Act, the idea of "natural resources" is popularized. They believe that environmental damages that may stem from economic growth will be corrected once a society is economically satisfied (wealthy) and shift their focus away from financial need. In my opinion, the problem with this philosophy is that in a society that uses overconsumption as a way of comparing wealth and sometimes self worth, the planet would likely be completely depleted of all resources before this group is satisfied. Additionally they don't really have a clear plan for how to alleviate poverty because they blame the existence of poverty on political failures and over regulation. Market liberals tend to minimize environmental impact and claim poverty is the main contributor to environmental degradation. Institutionalists have similar beliefs to market liberals; however, they focus on the need for institutions to regulate economies and the environment to ensure resources are managed in a way that does not compromise the needs of future generations. People began to finally consider how the actions and needs of humanity were negatively impacting the physical world around us, and began to become a voice in opposition to environmental degradation on many different levels. While environmentalism in the past has often been pure in intent, many of the goals involve governmental change, and forgo focus on the individual. While regulations and laws in favor of the environment are obviously positive, they are worthless if they are not implemented on an individual level. Individual and local efforts, in terms of environmentalism, are often the most impactful and effective, eventually leading to change on a larger scale. With this idea in mind, environmentalism cannot just be something that occurs in wake of a threat or focuses on large–scale rules and regulations; it must work on shifting the perspective of individuals on a personal level. During the 19th and 20th century, both rapid industrialism and nuclear threats caused a new perspective on the role of the environment to humanity. Since then, people have created efficient and simple ways to reduce plastic waste, to help prevent the Earth from becoming a landfill. A few Americans, in the 1960's, sorted their waste, and few could have answered the question that asked if they were an "environmentalist" (Patterson, 510). The 1960's were pivotal to the federal government's realization of the harmful effects of air, water, and ground pollutants (Patterson, 513). On December 2, 1970, the United States Environmental Protection Agency, also known as EPA, was created. The United States EPA was created in the wake of elevated concern of environmental pollution. It was established to consolidate a variety of research, monitoring, standard–setting and enforcement activities to ensure environmental protection, all in one agency (United States Environmental Protection Agency). The average American creates about one hundred–thirty pounds of trash a month, and an article in the journal Nature estimates that global solid–waste generation will triple, to eleven million tons a day, by the year 2100 (Semuels). Plastic does not break down; it's not biodegradable nor does it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My trash for the past three years can fit into one Mason jar. Everything in the jar is plastic that is not recyclable by New York City's recycling infrastructure, like pieces of clothing that have price tags, or clothing stickers. I hold onto it for two reasons: One day I hope to recycle it, but also because it shines a light on trash issues that might not be top of mind, like straws or price tags–think of how many there are in the world, and they all go to landfill! That's trash that exists as a problem (Singer, Teen ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Lessons from a Third World Perspective on... Lessons from a Third World Perspective on Environmentalism Possibly more than any of the other articles we have read so far, Ramachandra Guha's article "Radical Environmentalism and Wilderness Preservation: A Third World Critique" made me think. In analyzing the Western deep ecology movement, he criticized its focus on preservation of wild areas. By doing this, he was directly criticizing what I have long thought of as my main goal as an "environmentalist." One of the first things that turned me on to environmental issues when I was younger was my horror at the soaring rate of rainforest destruction so dramatically portrayed to us in 9th grade biology class. Since then, by following a biology track ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But reading the article, I was struck by what we can learn from each other and from where we overlap. Guha's article critiqued the four main tenants of deep ecology (which are, as he sees them,: a shift from anthropocentric to biocentric ethics, a focus on preservation of wilderness, an invocation of Eastern spiritual traditions, and a perception of being the vanguard of current environmentalism) in order to show that, as is, deep ecology would only
  • 38. meet its goals at the expense of the Third World. He gave the example of "Project Tiger" in India, in which Western preservationists organizations encouraged the designation of a network of parks to preserve the tiger's habitat but only by moving whole villages of people and prohibiting them from using the land (272). Of course, this type of conflict between protecting the habitat of an endangered species and letting the land be used by locals does not only occur in Third World contexts – it is a common debate, including of course the famous Spotted Owl example within our own country. Although it seems clear that a conflict between anthropocentric and biocentric world views is at work here, Guha claims that the dichotomy is useless (271). I have also seen it as somewhat problematic, even from my own biological ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Environmentalism In The Lorax Dr. Seuss did not only use his stories to influence and teach children to read, but he used them to encourage children to think critically about serious issues happening in the world around us. In hopes that the adults of the future become aware of their surroundings and correct the mistakes of today's society. In Dr.Seussʻs children story, The Lorax displays events of greed, industrialization, and the desperate need to protect and care for our environment. The series of greedy events begins when the Onceler comes across a land filled with truffle trees, which he finds as an area to build his business and use the trees as a source of money to transform into a clothing item he created, Thneads. Through the events that occur within the story of The Lorax, Dr.Seuss attempts to inform children reading that if we continue to put our wants before the needs of our environment, our ecosystem in result will slowly begin to lose its meaning. Dr.Seuss uses the curious boy who comes across the dead land, which the Lorax and all his friends once lived, as the children who read the story in hopes to gain more insight of the events that occurred during this time of despair along with a solution. The Onceler takes advantage of the truffula trees to make Threads, which is a clothing item that can transform into anything that you desire. The greediness of the Onceler shows that if society continues to disrespect the land, the resources it provides for us will begin to decrease. In reaction ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Environmentalism And Religion The problem with some environmentalist is putting nature before God. Rich Deem stated that, "Many Christians have reacted against the environmental movement, probably because of the tendency by many environmentalists not only to protect the earth and its creatures, but to actually worship the creation instead of the creator" (2009). In the Bible, Exodus 20:3–4 say, "You must not have any other god but me. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea" (NLT). Anything or anybody that is worship or placed before God is considered an idol. True believing Christians has a problem with environmentalists that believe the environment is the reason why we have life. The world ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Environmentalism Was Once A Social Justice Movement Analysis Druyor, Kyle Environmentalism Was Once a Social–Justice Movement Summary: Environmentalism has been difficult for us to keep control of and the use of the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act explain how we are supposed to keep our air and water clear for our own use. During the 1970s most of these laws were passed and hopefully during Presidents Trump's campaign will have a better idea of our environment and how we can change America to becoming a better country environmentally. America is one of the countries that need to be changed environmentally for us to have a better living place for us now, instead of for works working in mines and gaining bad lungs from breathing in the wrong type of air. If we change these laws to fit our environment ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
