Under Principle 10, public participation is a creature of three distinct requirements Firstly, there is a
recognition that participation does not occur in a vacuum; rather, it is facilitated by a healthy
understanding of the current state of the environment. The Rio Declaration recognized that "at the
national level, each individual shall have appropriate access to information concerning the
environment that is held by public authorities, including information on hazardous materials and
activities in their communities ."
As such, there is a responsibility on governments to make available information on the environment
and the current risks faced to the citizens. The Rio Declaration states that "states shall facilitate and

Environmental Sustainability
Environmental sustainability is the process of making sure current processes of interaction with the
environment are pursued with the idea of keeping the environment as pristine as naturally possible
based on ideal–seeking behavior (Wikipedia, 2010). What makes environmental sustainability so
important is that it demands that society designs activities to meet human needs while indefinitely
preserving the life support systems of the planet (Wikipedia, 2010). Human consumption can only
use the nature's resources at a rate that can be replenished naturally.

The most devastating environmental change of all is the loss of biodiversity. The rate of species
extinction has remained at one species per million per year, furthermore, the accelerating destruction
of habitats throughout the world leads to projections of the loss of two–thirds of all species on earth
by the end of this century, and millions of years to recover from the Cretaceous period

agency and they deal with keeping the environment clean and they enforce the laws to keep it clean.
The agency was put together by President Richard Nixon on December 2, 1970. He put them
together to enforce the fines, sanctions and other measures. Their headquarters is in Washington
D.C.The Environmental Protection Agency always has people wondering where they get the money,
what they will change, and how they help the world. Bill Clinton elected the head of the
environmental protection agency when he was elected and he chose Florida's secretary of
environmental regulations. To start off, President Bill Clinton elected Carol Browner to run the
environmental protection agency (Carol M. Browner 50). Carol Browner sticks up to what she
feels is important for today's society. To continue, Browner won her role by getting her respect
gained in 2 cases as Florida's secretary of environmental regulations (Carol M. Browner 50).
Browner was standing her ground when the federal government went after Florida to restore the
everglades. Lastly, Roosevelt and Pinchot were focused on the wise and efficient use of natural
resources (Geary 226). Roosevelt and Pinchot did whatever they needed to get more information on
natural resources. Bill Clinton chose Carol M. Browner because he knew that she would do her
best in this position and with all of her experience for this position and also Roosevelt wanted to
make the environment better for today's society and also for all of the societies to still come. The
Environmental Protective Agency works hard to make the environment better and they also work
hard to get enough money to fund it. According to multiple reports President Lyndon Johnson, "took
an interest in preservationist issues" (Girard 100). President Johnson was interested in the

During and since World War II the United States has produced millions of tons of toxic wastes during
the manufacturing and processing of products. These hazards were often left abandoned and no one
really paid attention to their effect on our environment. In the 1980s Congress established a
Superfund Program. It was left for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to administer the
superfund program, to find these hazardous sites, investigate and determine the worst ones, and
then clean up those sites across the United States. Over 15,000 sites were identified and 1,400
were named to the National Priorities List (NPL). One of the towns was Picher Oklahoma named

permanent sovereignty over natural resources has come to entail duties as well as rights. There has
been an evolution of permanent sovereignty from a political claim to a principle of international law.
