4. ENOVA’s Case for Fleet Electrification
There were more than 16 million public and private fleet vehicles on the
road in the US in 2009. The concentration of buying power represents a
significant opportunity to assist the early development of the electric drive
vehicle industry.
o Today, 94 % of the delivered energy that powers the
U.S. transportation system is petroleum based
o Petroleum accounts for 40% of the US Energy needs
o Transportation accounts for 70% of the oil used in the
US at 14 Mio barrels per day and 55% worldwide
o Today the US is hostage to a global Oil Market that is
likely to become increasingly more volatile. In July of
2008 we hit $147 per barrel triggering the most severe
recession since WW2.
o The most significant risk to global economic recovery is
increased economic activity is propelling oil prices back
toward these 2008 levels
o Ave from 2005-2010, the US spent about 5% of its GDP
or >900 billion on petroleum based fuels.

5. Advantages of fleet electrification
The electrification of our fleets has clear advantages:
o Electricity represents a diverse, domestic, stable and scalable energy
source whose inputs are almost free of oil.
o High Penetration of grid enabled Electric and Hybrid Fleets will minimize
the dependence of oil of the US, strengthen our economy, improve
national security and provide more flexibility in our foreign policies.
o Simultaneously this change will allow to reduce emission of GHG.
5
6. The ENOVA case for Fleet electrification
Fleets tend to possess a handful of important characteristics that
make them more likely to take on the potential risks of electric drive
ownership in anticipation of reaping financial benefits down the road.
Fleets have:
o Total Cost of Ownership Approach to Acquisition
o Route Predictability & lower Range → right size battery, ↓ waste
o High Vehicle Utilization Rates
o Use of Centralized Parking, less dependent on public charging
o Are likely to already have the heavy-duty electric grid connections
needed for rapid charging
o Increased Importance of Maint. & Service Costs (longer life/miles)
o Access to Lower Electricity Rates
o Access to Alternative Business Models such as leasing etc.
o Corporate Sustainability Initiatives & access to government funding
6
7. Challenges of Fleet Electrification
Fleet operators also face challenges. Some of the basic cost and
technology hurdles for individual consumers will also be
problematic for fleets, but fleets are typically better equipped to
deal with them.
Fleet electrification can come with its own set of unique challenges
that can be addressed through a combination of careful planning
and selection of components and public policy support:
o Technology Costs, mostly battery cost
o Capital Expense vs. Operating Expense
o Questions regarding Residual Value of the Battery
o Fleet Infrastructure Issues (cost of chargers ↓ v.s. charge time)
o Utility Impact of Dense Charge Networks
o Market Perception, need for confidence that technology/vehicle
can deliver

16. Social cost of lack of electrification
The total cost to public health and society of the existing motor vehicle
fleet (fleet average) is more than $10 billion in 2010 for California alone.
An American Lung Association’s/ TIAX LLC study from 2008 (Road to
a cleaner future) finds that if California implemented converting the
automobile fleet from gasoline to completely zero emission
technologies would:
o Save $142 billion in the 2010 – 2030 timeframe, or $96 billion more
than relying on the cleanest gasoline technologies and
o Avoid at least $2.2 billion per year in health costs from exposure to
directly emitted fine particulate matter (PM 2.5)
o Avoid total of 6,000 premature deaths could be avoided by 2030
o Avoid >260 cases of chronic bronchitis, >7,000 asthma attacks
o Avoid >18,000 cases of upper & lower respiratory symptoms each
year
16
