Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

HCL Notes und Domino Lizenzkostenreduzierung in der Welt von DLAUpanagenda
Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/hcl-notes-und-domino-lizenzkostenreduzierung-in-der-welt-von-dlau/

CAKE: Sharing Slices of Confidential Data on BlockchainClaudio Di Ciccio
Presented at the CAiSE 2024 Forum, Intelligent Information Systems, June 6th, Limassol, Cyprus.
Synopsis: Cooperative information systems typically involve various entities in a collaborative process within a distributed environment. Blockchain technology offers a mechanism for automating such processes, even when only partial trust exists among participants. The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains. After outlining its core components and functionalities, we showcase the application of CAKE in the context of a real-world cyber-security project within the logistics domain.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

ENMAT (Energy Monitoring & Targeting) is a web based Energy Monitoring and Targeting system. It presents energy management data in a way that is relevant, meaningful and useful to users. The purpose of Monitoring and Targeting is to relate your energy consumption data to the appropriate energy drivers, such as weather and production, so that you get a better understanding of how energy is being used. In particular, it will identify if there are signs of avoidable waste or other opportunities to reduce consumption.Envantage offer a Monitoring and Targeting (M&T) service to enable organisations to save energy and cut costs. The use of this platform means that we can deliver a bespoke solutions to meet your needs.Aimed at industrial/commercial SMEs and multi-site retailers, the Envantage ENMAT service utilises the latest software technologies to obtain a full picture of customer energy usage across single or multiple sites.
Our partners work in the same industry as us, so you can say we are very familiar with the services our Partners offer Our primary business focus is Energy and Carbon Management Consultancy www.envantage.co.uk We work with a number of bodies/organisationsMany Energy Management solutions have been developed by software companies, not Energy/Carbon Management Consultancies.
Since 2009 ENMAT has grown its customer base directly, and through its worldwide partner network to become one of the most powerful and flexible Monitoring Solutions on the market.
Energy monitoring and targeting (M&T) is an energy efficiency technique based on the standard management axiom stating that “you cannot manage what you cannot measure”. M&T techniques provide energy managers with feedback on operating practices, results of energy management projects, and guidance on the level of energy use that is expected in a certain period. Importantly, they also give early warning of unexpected excess consumption caused by malfunctions, operator error, unwanted user behaviours, maintenance errors etc.
The foundation of M&T lies in determining the normal relationships of energy consumptions to relevant driving factors (production throughputs, weather, available daylight, etc.) and the goal is to help business managers:Identify and explain excessive energy useDetect instances when consumption is unexpectedly lower than would usually have been the caseDraw energy consumption trends (weekly, seasonal, operational…)Determine future energy use when planning changes in the businessDiagnose specific areas of wasted energyObserve how the business reacted to changes in the pastDevelop performance targets for energy management programsManage their energy consumption, rather than accept it as a fixed cost that they have no control over. The ultimate goal is to reduce energy costs through improved energy efficiency and energy management control. Other benefits generally include increased resource efficiency, improved production budgeting and reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Throughout the numerous M&T projects implemented since the 1980s, a certain number of benefits have proved to be recurrent:Energy cost savings: generally 5% of the original energy expenses, according to The Carbon Trust. Carbon Trust has conducted a study over 1000 small businesses and has concluded that on average an organisation could save between 5% - 7%.Reduction in GHG emissions: lower energy consumption helps reduce emissionsFinancing: measured energy reductions help obtain grants for energy efficiency projectsImproved product and service costing: sub-metering allows the division of the energy bill between the different processes of an industry, and can be calculated as a production costImproved budgeting: M&T techniques can help forecast energy expenses in the case of changes in the business, for exampleWaste avoidance: helps diagnose energy waste in any process.
Quick overview of ENMAT Cloud Software
ENMAT cloud services is the simple, cheaper way to manage your Energy related data. Offers significant opportunities to reduce the impact of computing on the environment, Reduces Co2 emissions of computing undertaken using the cloud
Users can manually enter Actual, Customer or Estimated meter readings for electricity or gas supplies. The kWh usage is then reported on with Enmat Energy dashboards, charts and graphs allowing the user to see energy usage in a similar way to an Automatic Meter Read (AMR) in ENMAT from a smart meter. ENMAT uses the same dashboard interfaces for manual meter reads as with AMR’s for simplicity. Energy related data can also be accessed through a number of ENMAT Apps including Android and IOSThe ENMAT Meter Reading Entry Service is an affordable way to manage periodic meter readings and energy billing.
Increasing energy costs are frequently the largest variable expense for commercial, industrial, institutional and multi-family facilities. The installation of submeters provides a variety of benefits to the building owner as well as the tenants:- Record actual energy usage (no estimation)- Analytical tool for allocating costs to tenants, departments- Analytical tool for energy management- Compliance with green building initiatives- Measurement & verification of energy conservation programs
Supports 8 Pulse Inputs and 8 Analogue CT Inputs. 128 Modbus RTU and TCP/IP communications.Built in SMTP Email Server to send a daily report of 30 minute readings to ENMAT Cloud based software via a CSV file which is emailed once daily. Time Synchronisation with a built in battery which allows the data logger to synchronise via SNTP to a time server to keep it in sync.
ENMAT records data onsite using a data logger attached to the Smart Meters. The data logger then emails or sends via FTP the consumption data to the ENMAT Cloud servers. Typically this data is sent once daily in 30 min data sets.
