Idioms in Use Set Five
Read this short passage aloud. Think about the meanings of the idioms as
you read. This will train your brain to master these idioms.
Situation: A victim is talking about how her car was stolen and the
response of the police.
Last week, just a stone’s throw away from here, my car was stolen from
the supermarket car park. The thieves got into the car just as I was coming
out of the supermarket. The brave supermarket security guard tried to stop
them, but they got away by the skin of their teeth. Thankfully, we saw the
two culprits very clearly, and passed on their descriptions to the police,
who have promised to leave no stone unturned in finding both the thieves
and my car. The police have provided me with a temporary car until they
find my one. The kind response of the police and their huge effort has
really blown me away. I can’t thank them enough.

Situation: A victim is talking about how her car was stolen and the response of the police. Last week, just a stone’s throw away from here, my car was stolen from the supermarket car park. The thieves got into the car just as I was coming out of the supermarket. The brave supermarket security guard tried to stop them, but they got away by the skin of their teeth. Thankfully, we saw the two culprits very clearly, and passed on their descriptions to the police, who have promised to leave no stone unturned in finding both the thieves and my car. The police have provided me with a temporary car until they find my one. The kind response of the police and their huge effort has really blown me away. I can’t thank them enough.
