Agenda
 Please place homework on front desk.
 Literature Circle 6
 Choose a passage (2+sentences) from the book that stood
out to you. Why did this passage stand out?
 Determine who will speak for the group – put your name
and role on the board.
 Author’s Tone, Irony, and Satire
Author’s Tone
 Can you figure out what
the tone of the speaker
is? Is there really a
language barrier?
 The woman is actually
being sarcastic, right? A
language barrier usually
means that two different
languages are involved.
How is the woman
feeling?
What is this person’s tone?
I just love going to college. I have
some really great teachers, and I am
learning a lot.
I don’t love going to college but I know that in order to
achieve my dreams, it is important to have an education.
Tone Words
 Let’s take a few minutes to look at some tone words
 We are going to work in pairs.
 Look up the tone word you have been assigned and write it on the
board.
Obamacare
 Now let’s practice. Have you been keeping up with the news in
regards to the new health care program?
 Let’s look at some quotes from various politicians and others
involved and determine the author’s tone.
 Keep in mind that there can be more than one answer.
 When you are done with your flash card, pass it to the pair on
your right. Continue doing this until everyone has completed
the “Tone” chart.
What is President Obama’s tone?
"There will be no negotiations over this. The
American people are not pawns in some political
game. You don't get to demand ransom in
exchange for keeping the government running"
or keeping the economy running.”
What is Senator Cruz’ tone?
 "One of the things we accomplished in the
fight over Obamacare is we elevated the
national debate over what a disaster, what a
train wreck, how much Obamacare is hurting
millions of Americans across this country."
Jon Stewart’s Tone??
 “The whole point of web sites is to design them
so that it is nearly impossible to not sign up for
something. Every time I go on Amazon there‟s a
40 percent chance I‟ll mistakenly overnight
myself six seasons of „Night Court.‟ It‟s just the
way it‟s designed. „Are you sure you want to
leave this page?‟ Yes I am — oops, turns out I
ordered something. So how are the Democrats
going to spin this turd?”
Human Services Secretary Kathleen
Sebelious – What’s her tone?
 The majority of people calling for me to resign I would
say are people who I don't work for, and who do not
want this program to work in the first place,” she said. “I
have had frequent conversations with the president and
I've committed to him that my role is to get the program
up and running and we will do just that.”
Jay Leno’s Tone??
 Here‟s a very disturbing story. You may have
heard about this. A 25-year-old man in New York
was arrested for trying to join al Qaeda. Well, here
is the amazing part. He said it was still easier to
join al Qaeda using their website than it was to
sign up for ObamaCare. And he was in! He was
in, in like, two minutes!
Inferences and Tone
 In reading the quotes, did you “read between the lines” in
order to infer what each person was trying to get across to
his/her audience?
 In order to feel the author’s attitude and identify the tone, it
is necessary to really think about what the author is stating.
 The next time you read a
passage, try to identify
the author’s tone.
 It will help you “get the
message” of the text.
Let’s Talk More About Irony
 The use of words to express something different from
and often opposite to their literal meaning.
 An expression or utterance marked by a deliberate
contrast between apparent and intended meaning.
 A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous
or rhetorical effect.
Verbal Irony
 When there is a contrast between what people say and
what they actually mean, they are using verbal irony.
 Since the meaning is usually expressed indirectly, you
must use inference--there‟s that “inference” word again-
- to understand this reversed meaning, or you will
misinterpret the author.
Verbal Irony
 Verbal irony is also known as sarcasm.
 Sarcasm is the use of words that mean the opposite of
what you really want to say especially in order to insult
someone, to show irritation, or to be funny.
 Let’s check out this video from “The Big Bang Theory.” In
the middle of the night Leonard and Sheldon clean
Penny’s apartment.
Situational Irony
 Another form of irony is situational. In this form, there is
a contrast between what is expected to occur and what
actually does happen. Many stories or poems that end
with an unexpected twist are based on this type of irony.
Situation Irony – More “Big Bang
Theory”
 In this scene, Howard finally believes that he has been
accepted by the others astronauts on the space station.
 What is the situational irony?
 The situational irony in this case is that he is unaware
that the other astronauts have drawn on his face. His
wife and the audience are in on the joke because they
can see what Howard cannot.
Satire
 Satire is a kind of writing that uses ridicule to create
awareness of flaws and to bring about change.
 Almost anything can be satirized, including people,
institutions, and ideas.
 Because it relies on exaggeration and distortion, satire
often has a humorous effect.
 Caricature is a form of satire in which certain characteristics, such as physical
features, are exaggerated.
 In hyperbole, language is used to exaggerate a situation.
 Another word for hyperbole is overstatement.
 In overstatement, the subject is magnified beyond reality by using adjectives
(big, longer, best) and sweeping generalizations (every, always, never).
 The satirist may also use understatement, which is saying less about
something than is expected.
Satire
 Thinking back to the quotes we read, who used satire?
 The comedians…Jan Leno and Jon Stewart

  • 7.
  • 8.  Can you figure out what the tone of the speaker is? Is there really a language barrier?  The woman is actually being sarcastic, right? A language barrier usually means that two different languages are involved. How is the woman feeling?
  • 9. What is this person’s tone?
  • 10. I just love going to college. I have some really great teachers, and I am learning a lot.
  • 11. I don’t love going to college but I know that in order to achieve my dreams, it is important to have an education.
  • 12. Tone Words  Let’s take a few minutes to look at some tone words  We are going to work in pairs.  Look up the tone word you have been assigned and write it on the board.
  • 13. Obamacare  Now let’s practice. Have you been keeping up with the news in regards to the new health care program?  Let’s look at some quotes from various politicians and others involved and determine the author’s tone.  Keep in mind that there can be more than one answer.  When you are done with your flash card, pass it to the pair on your right. Continue doing this until everyone has completed the “Tone” chart.
  • 14. What is President Obama’s tone? "There will be no negotiations over this. The American people are not pawns in some political game. You don't get to demand ransom in exchange for keeping the government running" or keeping the economy running.”
  • 15. What is Senator Cruz’ tone?  "One of the things we accomplished in the fight over Obamacare is we elevated the national debate over what a disaster, what a train wreck, how much Obamacare is hurting millions of Americans across this country."
  • 16. Jon Stewart’s Tone??  “The whole point of web sites is to design them so that it is nearly impossible to not sign up for something. Every time I go on Amazon there‟s a 40 percent chance I‟ll mistakenly overnight myself six seasons of „Night Court.‟ It‟s just the way it‟s designed. „Are you sure you want to leave this page?‟ Yes I am — oops, turns out I ordered something. So how are the Democrats going to spin this turd?”
  • 17. Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelious – What’s her tone?  The majority of people calling for me to resign I would say are people who I don't work for, and who do not want this program to work in the first place,” she said. “I have had frequent conversations with the president and I've committed to him that my role is to get the program up and running and we will do just that.”
  • 18. Jay Leno’s Tone??  Here‟s a very disturbing story. You may have heard about this. A 25-year-old man in New York was arrested for trying to join al Qaeda. Well, here is the amazing part. He said it was still easier to join al Qaeda using their website than it was to sign up for ObamaCare. And he was in! He was in, in like, two minutes!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RILydIeyO8w
  • 19. Inferences and Tone  In reading the quotes, did you “read between the lines” in order to infer what each person was trying to get across to his/her audience?  In order to feel the author’s attitude and identify the tone, it is necessary to really think about what the author is stating.
  • 20.  The next time you read a passage, try to identify the author’s tone.  It will help you “get the message” of the text.
  • 21. Let’s Talk More About Irony  The use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning.  An expression or utterance marked by a deliberate contrast between apparent and intended meaning.  A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect.
  • 22. Verbal Irony  When there is a contrast between what people say and what they actually mean, they are using verbal irony.  Since the meaning is usually expressed indirectly, you must use inference--there‟s that “inference” word again- - to understand this reversed meaning, or you will misinterpret the author.
  • 23. Verbal Irony  Verbal irony is also known as sarcasm.  Sarcasm is the use of words that mean the opposite of what you really want to say especially in order to insult someone, to show irritation, or to be funny.  Let’s check out this video from “The Big Bang Theory.” In the middle of the night Leonard and Sheldon clean Penny’s apartment.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raVqiQhU-Fw
  • 24. Situational Irony  Another form of irony is situational. In this form, there is a contrast between what is expected to occur and what actually does happen. Many stories or poems that end with an unexpected twist are based on this type of irony.
  • 25. Situation Irony – More “Big Bang Theory”  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEnk_bsRoKE  In this scene, Howard finally believes that he has been accepted by the others astronauts on the space station.  What is the situational irony?  The situational irony in this case is that he is unaware that the other astronauts have drawn on his face. His wife and the audience are in on the joke because they can see what Howard cannot.
  • 26. Satire  Satire is a kind of writing that uses ridicule to create awareness of flaws and to bring about change.  Almost anything can be satirized, including people, institutions, and ideas.  Because it relies on exaggeration and distortion, satire often has a humorous effect.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OLL90cxxXQ
  • 27.  Caricature is a form of satire in which certain characteristics, such as physical features, are exaggerated.  In hyperbole, language is used to exaggerate a situation.  Another word for hyperbole is overstatement.  In overstatement, the subject is magnified beyond reality by using adjectives (big, longer, best) and sweeping generalizations (every, always, never).  The satirist may also use understatement, which is saying less about something than is expected.
  • 28. Satire  Thinking back to the quotes we read, who used satire?  The comedians…Jan Leno and Jon Stewart
